105. Comparing connected structures in ensemble of random fields

Abstract

Very different connectivity patterns may arise from using different simulation methods or sets of pa-rameters, and therefore different flow properties. This paper proposes a systematic method to compare ensemble of categorical simulations from a static connectivity point of view. The differences of static con-nectivity cannot always be distinguished using two point statistics. In addition, multiple-point histograms only provide a statistical comparison of patterns regardless of the connectivity. Thus, we propose to char-acterize the static connectivity from a set of 12 indicators based on the connected components of the realizations. Some indicators describe the spatial repartition of the connected components, others their global shape or their topology through the component skeletons. We also gather all the indicators into dissimilarity values to easily compare hundreds of realizations. Heat maps and multidimensional scal-ing then facilitate the dissimilarity analysis. The application to a synthetic case highlights the impact of the grid size on the connectivity and the indicators. Such impact disappears when comparing samples of the realizations with the same sizes. The method is then able to rank realizations from a referring model based on their static connectivity. This application also gives rise to more practical advices. The multidimensional scaling appears as a powerful visualization tool, but it also induces dissimilarity mis-representations: it should always be interpreted cautiously with a look at the point position confidence. The heat map displays the real dissimilarities and is more appropriate for a detailed analysis. The com-parison with a multiple-point histogram method shows the benefit of the connected components: the large-scale connectivity seems better characterized by our indicators, especially the skeleton indicators.

Abstract

We have measured the ionization efficiency of silicon nuclear recoils with kinetic energy between 1.8 and 20 keV . We bombarded a silicon-drift diode with a neutron beam to perform an elastic-scattering experiment. A broad-energy neutron spectrum was used and the nuclear recoil energy was reconstructed using a measurement of the time of flight and scattering angle of the scattered neutron. The overall trend of the results of this work is well described by the theory of Lindhard et al. above 4 keV of recoil energy. Below this energy, the presented data shows a deviation from the model. The data indicates a faster drop than the theory prediction at low energies.

119. Scaphocapitate fusion for the treatment of Lichtman stage III Kienböck's disease. Results of a single center study with literature review

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to report the outcomes of scaphocapitate fusion without lunate excision for the treatment of stage III Kienböck's disease and to compare these results with historical results of limited wrist arthrodesis and proximal row carpectomy. Clinical and radiographic evaluations were performed preoperatively and at a mean of 5.8-years’ follow-up (range 1.5 to 10.5years) on 17 patients with advanced Kienböck's disease (Lichtman stages: IIIA n=4 and IIIB n=13) treated by scaphocapitate fusion without lunate excision between January 2000 and July 2015. The average DASH score was 19 points (range 2 to 61) and the PRWE score was 23 points (range 0 to 77). The average preoperative VAS for pain of 8 was significantly reduced to an average of 4 with activity (P=0.002) and 1 at rest (P=0.001). The flexion/extension arc was 91° and grip strength was 76% of the contralateral side. The preoperative mean modified carpal height ratio decreased significantly to an average of 1.14 at the latest follow-up (P=0.02). The average carpal-ulnar distance ratio was not altered (P=0.89). The radioscaphoid and scapholunate angles were restored to their normal range. Four scaphocapitate joints failed to fuse. No re-operations were performed. Scaphocapitate fusion for advanced Kienböck's disease maintains wrist motion and significantly relieves pain. Lunate excision is not necessary. Based on a literature review, our results were comparable to those of scaphotrapeziotrapezoid fusion. Proximal row carpectomy is still an option when the radius and capitate articular surfaces are free of significant chondral lesions.

Abstract

Radioisotopes, produced in stars and ejected into the Interstellar Medium, are important for constraining stellar and early Solar System (ESS) models. In particular, the half-life of the radioisotope, 60Fe, can have an impact on calculations for the timing for ESS events, the distance to nearby Supernovae, and the brightness of individual, non-steady-state 60Fe gamma ray sources in the Galaxy. A half-life measurement has been undertaken at the University of Notre Dame and measurements of the 60Fe/56Fe concentration of our samples using Accelerator Mass Spectrometry has begun. This result will be coupled with an activity measurement of the isomeric decay in 60Co, which is the decay product of 60Fe. Preliminary half-life estimates of (2.53±0.24)×106 years seem to confirm the recent measurement by Rugel et al. (2009).

Abstract

In this article we discuss two aspects related to the 12C + 12C fusion reaction at low energies for carbon burning in supermassive stars. First we present plausible arguments for the notion that the observed resonance structures at the lowest measured energies arise from the relatively large spacing and narrow width of 24Mg compound levels at the corresponding excitation energy region. We thus point out that the Incoming Wave Boundary Condition is inappropriate for calculating the fusion cross section under these situations. Secondly, we report on a particle-γ coincidence technique that has been used for the first time to measure the fusion cross section in the system 12C + 12C at low beam energies. Based on these results, it should be possible to measure this important fusion cross section down to the 10 pb level within a reasonable length of time.

Abstract

Fusion evaporation cross sections for the Al27+Sc45 (Q=9.63 MeV) system are measured down to about 300 nb. Deviations from standard coupled-channels calculations were observed in this system at the lowest energies. The steep fall-off of the fusion cross sections can be reproduced by calculations using a shallow potential model, which was originally developed to explain the hindrance behavior of heavy-ion fusion in medium-mass systems with negative Q values. Comparisons of the hindrance behavior between the present experiment and other systems, for example, Si28+Si30 (Q=14.3 MeV) and S36+Ca48 (Q=7.55 MeV) are presented. © 2010 The American Physical Society. Abstract

The DIANA project (Dakota Ion Accelerators for Nuclear Astrophysics) is a collaboration between the University of Notre Dame, Colorado School of Mines, Regis University, University of North Carolina, Western Michigan University, and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, to build a next generation nuclear astrophysics accelerator facility deep underground. The DIANA accelerator facility is being designed to achieve large laboratory reaction rates by delivering high ion beam currents (up to 100 mA) to a high density (up to 1018 atoms/cm2), super-sonic jet-gas target. The accelerator developments of the DIANA facility are presented here.
