To facilitate mass transport and column efficiency, solutes must have free access to particle pores to facilitate interactions with the stationary phase. To ensure this feature, particles should be used for HPLC separations which have pores sufficiently large to accommodate the solute without restricted diffusion. This paper describes the design and properties of superficially porous (also called Fused-Core ® , core shell or porous shell) particles with very large (1000 A) pores specifically developed for separating very large biomolecules and polymers. Separations of DNA fragments, monoclonal antibodies, large proteins and large polystyrene standards are used to illustrate the utility of these particles for efficient, high-resolution applications.

AimsThe purpose of this article was to review the current literature pertaining to the use of mobile compression devices (MCDs) for venous thromboembolism (VTE) following total joint arthroplasty (TJA), and to discuss the results of data from our institution.Patients and MethodsPrevious studies have illustrated higher rates of post-operative wound complications, re-operation and re-admission with the use of more aggressive anticoagulation regimens, such as warfarin and factor Xa inhibitors. This highlights the importance of the safety, as well as efficacy, of the chemoprophylactic regimen.ResultsStudies have shown a symptomatic VTE rate of 0.92% with use of MCDs for prophylaxis, which is comparable with rates seen with more aggressive anticoagulation protocols. A prior prospective study found that use of a pre-operative risk stratification protocol based on personal history of deep vein thrombosis, family history of VTE, active cancer, or a hypercoaguable state allowed for the avoidance of aggressive prophylactic anticoagulation in over 70% of patients while maintaining a low incidence of symptomatic VTE.ConclusionFurther investigation is needed into the role of aspirin in VTE prophylaxis as well as the efficacy of MCDs as stand-alone prophylactic treatment. Aims The purpose of our study is to summarise the current scientific findings regarding the impact of obesity on total hip arthroplasty (THA); specifically the influence of obesity on the timing of THA, incidence of complications, and effect on clinical and functional outcomes. Materials and Methods We performed a systematic review that was compliant with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines to identify prospective studies from the PubMed/Medline, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases that evaluated primary THA in obese (body mass index (BMI) ≥ 30 kg/m2) patients. Results There were 17 articles included in the review, which encompassed 13 722 THA patients. Analysis of the included studies showed that, when compared with non-obese patients, obesity was associated with younger age at time of primary THA, and an increased incidence of complications (up to four-fold). Results were mixed on the influence of obesity on the outcomes of primary THA, with three studies showing a detrimental effect on outcomes of a BMI ≥ 30 kg/m2, while eight studies showed no effect. Conclusion Obesity is associated with significantly younger age at time of primary THA and obese patients are likely to experience a higher rate of peri-operative complications. More investigation is needed into the effect of obesity on clinical outcomes, as the current literature is mixed. Cite this article: Bone Joint J 2017;99-B(1 Supple A):31–6.

Sediment cores from southeastern Tanzania contain exceptionally well-preserved calcareous and organic-walled microfossils in numerous samples spanning from the Aptian to the Miocene. The unusually high quality of preservation is commonly attributed to shallow burial and high clay content of the host sediments. However, such attributes apply to many deposits that are not characterized by exceptional preservation, and, thus, invoking only grain size and burial depth is clearly an incomplete explanation for the exceptional microfossil preservation. In an attempt to better characterize additional factors that were important in creating the Tanzanian microfossil lagerstatte, we integrated a wide range of paleontological, geochemical, and sedimentological observations to constrain the paleoenvironmental and early diagenetic conditions of a Turonian interval where exceptional preservation is common. Planktic microfossil assemblages suggest that open-ocean surface-water conditions prevailed at the site, but, despite excellent organic matter preservation, marine biomarkers are rare. The sediments are dominantly composed of terrigenous silts and clays and terrestrially derived organic matter. Paleontological and geochemical observations record a remarkably stable interval dominated by excellent preservation through the Lower−Middle Turonian. During the Middle−Upper Turonian, though, the preservation quality declines, and this is associated with notable shifts in foraminiferal assemblages, palynological species diversity, carbon and sulfur isotope compositions, and biomarker distributions. The integrated data suggest that an increase in subsurface microbial activity and associated changes in pore-water chemistry were important proximate variables that led to the decline in the quality of microfossil preservation up section within these shallowly buried, Turonian silty claystones from Tanzania.

Though a number of effects of artificial light pollution on behavior and physiology have been described, there is little understanding of their consequences for the growth and distribution of populations. Here, we document impacts of light pollution on aspects of firefly population ecology and underlying mating behaviors. Many firefly species have a unique communication system whereby bioluminescent flashes are used in courtship displays to find and attract mates. We performed a series of manipulative field experiments in which we quantified the effects of adding artificial nighttime lighting on abundances and total flashing activity of fireflies, courtship behaviors and mating between tethered females and free-flying males, and dispersal distances of marked individuals. We show that light pollution reduces flashing activities in a dark-active firefly species (Photuris versicolor) by 69.69 % and courtship behavior and mating success in a twilight-active species (Photinus pyralis). Though courtship behavior and mating success of Photinus pyralis was reduced by light pollution, we found no effects of light pollution on male dispersal in this species. Our findings suggest that light pollution is likely to adversely impact firefly populations, and contribute to wider discussions about the ecological consequences of sensory pollution.

This article updates and expands the literature on the impact of production quotas. Unlike many of the early studies, our focus is largely on the removal of production quota programs. We study cases wherein production quota programs have been eliminated and quota owners were compensated for their losses. Specifically, we examine (1) production quotas in both the absence and presence of trade, (2) production quota buyouts (three case studies), (3) sources of funding, and (4) general equilibrium considerations. A fifth section briefly discusses externalities, the interpretation of consumer surplus measures, and the nature of conducting economic analyses of addictive goods.

A Ni-based pyrochlore catalyst was synthesized using the modified Pechini method. In this method, 1 wt% Ni was doped into the La2Zr2O7 pyrochlore structure. The catalyst was characterized by H2-TPR, TPO, XRD, and EXAFS, and tested for its methane reforming activity under bi-reforming reaction conditions; i.e., in the presence of CO2 and steam: 3 C H 4 + C O 2 + 2 H 2 O ⇌ 4 CO + 8 H 2 Repeated TPR/TPO cycles showed that the two consecutive TPR spectra do not change, showing that the catalyst is stable at high temperatures, and that the nickel oxidation/reduction process is reversible. The catalyst showed constant activity with time at all temperatures in the range of 700–950 °C over a cumulative period of 170 h. After this series of bi-reforming tests, TPO of the spent catalyst was carried out, which showed detectable but unquantifiable carbon deposition. The presence of steam in bi-reforming greatly limits carbon deposition compared to directly related dry-reforming tests on this same catalyst.

The recent focus on preparing K–12 students to be college and career ready has increased the attention to college-level literacies but has almost ignored career and technical courses as part of the landscape of adolescent literacy. This article explores literacies embedded in career and technical education courses, provides examples from agricultural and business education, and offers ideas for professional development that target literacy in career and technical education.

A series of Rh-substituted lanthanum zirconate pyrochlores doped with different loadings of Y (A-site or B-site) were synthesized and studied for methane steam reforming (MSR) under low steam-to-carbon ratios (S/C = 1.0). This study mainly focuses on Y doping in the pyrochlore structure and its potential influence on the catalytic activity of Rh and carbon formation during reaction. XANES data showed that doping Y into the pyrochlore resulted in an occupancy that was predominately located in the B-site, but overall the distribution of Y in each site was similar in all catalysts despite the loadings of Y and stoichiometry of the constituent pyrochlore cations. Activity testing showed that 4 wt% Y doping at La-site led to higher activity at high flow rate and feed dilution, and high selectivity to synthesis gas. This catalyst showed strong resistance to coking under a long-term stability test (300 h) and a series of low S/C ratios MSR.

La2Zr1.44Ni0.56O7-d (LNZ6), La1.95Ca0.05Zr1.44Ni0.56O7-d (LCNZ6), La1.95Sr0.05Zr1.44Ni0.56O7-d (LSNZ6) catalysts were investigated for DRM reaction to determine the effect of Sr- and Ca- substitution at the La site in Ni substituted Lanthanum Zirconate pyrochlore. XRD confirmed the formation of the pyrochlore phase with Ni substitution. Additionally, NiO and perovskite phases of Ni were detected. XANES and XRD confirmed the reduction of Ni to active Ni0 phase in reduced and spent catalysts. LSNZ6 turned out to be the most active DRM catalyst because of the higher surface Ni content, smaller particle size and high dispersion achieved as observed from XPS, XRD, SEM-EDS elemental mapping and TPR. LSNZ6 exhibited better resistance to sintering with negligible Ni size growth compared to LCNZ6 and LNZ6. Coke formation was inevitable and LSNZ6 showed more carbon formation which suggests carbon deposition correlated directly with activity. However, it had negligible impact on the activity and stability of the catalysts.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a potentially blinding disorder affecting premature infants. Our Eye Unit supports two neonatal intensive care units (NICUs), one provides neonatal surgical and medical facilities and the other is exclusively medical. Our objectives were to (1) to identify the annual rate of ROP treatments during the period 2009-2015 and (2) to estimate the incidence of ROP treatment in babies born very prematurely (SUBJECTS/METHODS: Records for all infants treated for ROP by our unit during the period 2009-2015 were reviewed. We calculated numbers treated in each year. Records of babies born under 27 weeks of gestation and cared for in the non-surgical NICU were also reviewed. Their requirement for laser treatments for ROP was calculated by the week of gestation at birth.RESULTS: In the two NICUs combined, 95 infants were treated for ROP between 2009 and 2015. The numbers treated increased from 9/158 (5.7%) of babies screened in 2009 to 22/159 (13.8%) in 2015 (ptrend = 0.004). The rate of laser treatment for ROP increased as gestation at birth decreased: from 12/100 (12%) of babies born at 26 weeks to 17/29 (59%) of babies born at 23 weeks (ptrend = 0.001).CONCLUSION: The number of laser treatments for ROP carried out by this unit has increased steadily between 2009 and 2015 and this may in part be due to the increased need for ROP treatment in extremely preterm babies, whose survival has increased in the same period. These data may aid planning for ROP services.

A great deal of research has examined the antecedents and outcomes of work–nonwork conflict. However, less is known about how life or career stage may affect these relationships, or how employees’ life or career stage may impact the ability to balance demands from multiple life domains. The current chapter reviews the literature and sets a foundation for research on work–nonwork roles and conflict within the context of lifespan development. We review current theoretical frameworks of lifespan and career development, and integrate them into the study of work–nonwork roles and work–nonwork conflict. Additionally, we review the empirical studies that have examined the work–nonwork interface with the consideration of lifespan. We conclude by highlighting gaps in the literature and suggesting opportunities for future research. Overall, we argue that the integration of lifespan theories into the study of work–nonwork roles and conflict is an important avenue for future research, and that the stage of one’s life and career is an important factor to consider when studying how individuals balance their numerous life roles.

The effects of pH (5.0, 6.0 and 7.0) and reaction time (2 h–60 d) on sorption/desorption of Si by a Si-deficient soil were investigated. Sorption isotherms for Si were linear indicating that with increasing surface coverage precipitation reactions were occurring on the sorption surfaces. Sorption of Si was increased as pH was increased from 5.0 to 7.0. Increasing the pH also resulted in a decrease in the percentage of sorbed Si that was subsequently desorbed over 10 desorption cycles. Similarly, increasing the pH during desorption (from 5.0 to 7.0) decreased the percentage Si desorbed as well as the percentage of Si that was released during the first desorption cycle. Thus, increasing pH not only increased the magnitude of sorption but the Si that was sorbed was held more strongly than at lower pH values. Increasing the period of sorption (up to 60 d) resulted in increased Si sorption thus demonstrating the existence of slow reactions between added Si and soil surfaces. Increasing contact time also decreased the percentage sorbed Si that could be desorbed over 12 desorption cycles and the percentage of total Si that was desorbed during the first desorption cycle. As the period of contact during sorption is increased subsequent desorption involves reversal of slow reactions and it is apparent that these are not easily or rapidly reversible. After a 60 d sorption period, only 49% of sorbed Si was desorbed over 12 desorption cycles. It was concluded that over a period of several months sorption can become a process by which Si is sequestered into a non-mobile form so that it cannot be regarded as simply a retention mechanism.

Grazing cattle can both negatively and positively impact riparian zones, dependent on controlled grazing management. Virtual fencing technology, using collar devices that operate via GPS can provide audio cues and electrical stimuli to temporarily exclude cattle from specified areas as desired. An early experimental prototype automated virtual fencing system was tested in excluding ten cattle from a riparian zone in Australia. Animals were given free access to an 11.33-hectare area for three weeks, excluded from river access by a virtual fence for ten days (2.86-hectare inclusion zone), followed by free access again for six days. Animals were almost exclusively contained by the virtual fence. All animals received audio cues and electrical stimuli with daily fence interactions, but there was high individual variation with some animals first approaching the fence more often than others. Overall, there was an approximately 25% probability that animals would receive an electrical stimulus following an audio cue. Individual associative learning may have been socially-facilitated by the group&rsquo, s behaviour. Following fence deactivation, all animals re-entered the previously excluded area. Further research with more groups and longer periods of exclusion using updated collar devices would determine the scope of virtual fencing technology for cattle grazing control.

A 32-week leaching column study was carried out in the greenhouse to investigate the effects of incorporation of gypsum, cattle manure, biosolids, gypsum plus cattle manure and gypsum plus biosolids into the topsoil layer (0–10 cm) on growth of Rhodes grass, and on root distribution and chemical and microbial properties in the topsoil and subsoil (10–30 cm) layers of seawater neutralized bauxite residues. The columns were leached for a period of 8 weeks prior to sowing Rhodes grass and during that time the bulk of the salts accumulated during seawater neutralization were leached out. The main cation leached was Na and the main balancing anions were Cl and SO . During this period the pH of leachates rose from 7 to 8 up to 9–10. At the end of the study, exchangeable Na and pH were lowered in the surface horizon by all treatments with a combination of gypsum plus organic amendments having the greatest effect. The latter treatments also caused a significant decrease in pH, extractable Al and exchangeable Na in the subsoil. Rhodes grass dry matter production followed the order Control < gypsum < cattle manure = gypsum plus cattle manure < biosolids = gypsum plus biosolids. Growth of roots into the subsoil layer was inhibited in the Control and gypsum treatments but when organic amendments were applied, 50% or more of root dry matter was recovered in the subsoil layer. It was concluded that incorporating a combination of gypsum and organic matter into the surface soil is an effective strategy for revegetation of bauxite residue.

Defoliating insects are a major factor impacting tree growth in temperate and boreal forests, but the effects of climate change on the severity and frequency of outbreaks of these insects are not well understood. Dendrochronological reconstruction of forest tent caterpillar (Malacosoma disstria) outbreaks on trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides) in southwestern Manitoba, Canada, from 1851 to 2010 was used to examine the effects of changes in temperature, incident surface‐level solar radiation, and drought severity on the cyclicity, frequency, and severity of outbreaks. Outbreak severity was determined by comparing the tree‐ring widths of trembling aspen with those of white spruce (Picea glauca), which is not a forest tent caterpillar host. Wavelet analysis suggested the cyclicity of outbreaks increased after 1930. From 1930 to 2010, the dominant period length of outbreak cycles steadily increased over time from three to seven years, coinciding with long‐term declines in drought severity. The strength of forest tent caterpillar suppression of trembling aspen growth in a given year was inversely related to incident solar radiation and drought severity during late spring (the larval feeding period) of the same year. The effect of late spring drought on the impact of forest tent caterpillar on ring growth differed from that of summer drought. There was a nonlinear relationship between growth suppression in a given year and summer drought severity in the previous year; slightly above‐average drought severity was associated with reduced impacts of the defoliator, whereas severe drought was associated with intense growth suppression. Strong suppression of aspen growth observed during outbreaks from 1983 to 2010 may be partly explained by observed long‐term trends of decreasing atmospheric transmittance of solar radiation (a phenomenon termed “global dimming”) and increasing soil moisture availability during late spring. However, as the severity and frequency of summer droughts are expected to increase over the 21st century, the nonlinear relationship between summer drought severity and growth suppression the following year suggests a future in which summer droughts precede severe outbreaks that threaten the health of boreal forest hardwood trees.

Maraviroc is a C‐C chemokine receptor type‐5 antagonist approved for the treatment of HIV‐1. Previous studies show that cytochrome P450 3A5 (CYP3A5) plays a role in maraviroc metabolism. CYP3A5 is subject to a genetic polymorphism. The presence of 2 functional alleles (CYP3A5*1/*1) confers the extensive metabolism phenotype, which is rare in whites but common in blacks. The effect of CYP3A5 genotype on maraviroc and/or metabolite pharmacokinetics was evaluated in 2 clinical studies: a post hoc analysis from a phase 2b/3 study ({"type":"clinical-trial","attrs":{"text":"NCT00098293","term_id":"NCT00098293"}}NCT00098293) conducted in 494 HIV‐1–infected subjects (study 1) in which the impact on maraviroc efficacy in 303 subjects was also assessed, and a study conducted in 47 healthy volunteers (study 2). In study 2 ({"type":"clinical-trial","attrs":{"text":"NCT02625207","term_id":"NCT02625207"}}NCT02625207), extensive metabolizers had 26% to 37% lower mean area under the concentration‐time curve compared with poor metabolizers (no CYP3A5*1 alleles). This effect diminished to 17% in the presence of potent CYP3A inhibition. The effect of CYP3A5 genotype was greatest in the formation of the metabolite (1S,2S)‐2‐hydroxymaraviroc. In study 1, the CYP3A5*1/*1 genotype unexpectedly had higher maraviroc area under the curve predictions (20%) compared with those with no CYP3A5*1 alleles. Laboratory and greenhouse experiments were carried out to investigate the chemical, physical, and microbial properties of seawater-neutralized bauxite residues and the effects of additional leaching (1 pore volume of deionized water versus an additional 6 pore volumes) and amendment with gypsum (5%) and/or cattle manure (6%) on its properties and on the growth of Rhodes grass (Chloris gayana). Additional leaching resulted in a decrease in EC, exchangeable Na, SAR, and ESP. For unamended control treatments, additional leaching induced a rise in pHSE from 8.5 to 9.6 and pH1:5 from 9.1 to 10.1 due to dissolution of residual alkalinity. Addition of gypsum arrested this pH increase resulting in a final pHSE of 7.5 and pH1:5 of 8.8. In control treatments, additional leaching resulted in a pronounced decrease in Rhodes grass yields. However, in gypsum and cattle manure-amended treatments, it led to substantial yield increases and decreases in tissue Al and Na concentrations and increased K/Na ratios. Upon drying for the first time, bauxite residue was shown to contract and form a solid massive structure. The aggregates formed from crushing this material were water stable (as measured by wet sieving). Additions of cattle manure or gypsum to residue aggregates did not affect pore size distribution. Addition of cattle manure increased organic C and microbial biomass C content and basal respiration rate while additional leaching increased basal respiration and metabolic quotient. It was concluded that a combination of drying and crushing the residue, amending it with gypsum and organic manure followed by extensive leaching results in the formation of a medium that supports plant growth.

When low-cost adsorbents are being used to remove contaminant ions (e.g. arsenate, vanadate, and molybdate) from wastewater, competitive adsorption/desorption are central processes determining their removal efficiency. Competitive adsorption of As, V, and Mo was investigated using equimolar oxyanion concentrations in single, binary, and tertiary combinations in adsorption isotherm and pH envelope studies while desorption of previously adsorbed oxyanions was examined in solutions containing single and binary oxyanion combinations. The low-cost adsorbent materials used were alum water treatment sludge (amorphous hydroxy-Al) and bauxite ore (crystalline Al oxides). Adsorption isotherm and pH envelope studies showed that Mo had only a small effect in decreasing adsorption of As and V but V and As had substantial and similar effects in reducing adsorption of the other. As had a greater effect than V in reducing adsorption of Mo and it was concluded that the affinity of oxyanions for the surfaces of water treatment sludge and bauxite followed the order As > V >> Mo. In 0.3 M NaCl electrolyte, desorption of previously adsorbed oxyanions amounted to 0.3–3.4% for V and As, and 11–20% for Mo. As had approximately four times greater effect than Mo in increasing desorption of V while V had about three times the effect of Mo in increasing desorption of As. Thus, the order of oxyanions in inducing desorption of the other oxyanions (i.e. As on V and As) was the same as that for adsorption selectivity: As > V >> Mo. Water treatment sludge was a more effective adsorbent than bauxite because it had a greater adsorption capacity for all three anions and, in addition, they were held more strongly so desorption in the background electrolyte was proportionately less. It was concluded that at similar molar concentrations, arsenate would tend to reduce adsorption of vanadate as well as displace vanadate already held on adsorbent surfaces while both anions will compete effectively with molybdate. The limiting factor for simultaneous removal of As, V, and Mo from multielement solutions by adsorption will therefore be the removal of Mo.

The chemical, physical and microbial properties of thermophilic composts and vermicomposts were compared using the same municipal green waste-based feedstocks: (i) municipal green waste alone, (ii) 75 % municipal green waste/25 % green garden waste and (iii) 75 % municipal green waste/25 % cattle manure. Temperatures reached 37 °C during composting of municipal green waste alone but when garden waste or cattle manure were added, temperatures reached 47 and 52 °C, respectively. At the end of vermicomposting (using Eisenia fetida), the number of earthworms present was greater than that added for the cattle manure-amended feedstock but much less for both the garden waste and municipal green waste alone treatments. The products formed in all treatments generally fell within suggested maturity indices for composts. Greater organic matter decomposition occurred during composting than vermicomposting resulting in composts having a significantly lower organic C content and a greater content of total N, extractable Mg, K, Na, P, and mineral N, a higher EC and a lower C/N ratio than the vermicomposts. For all three feedstocks, vermicomposts had a lower bulk density and greater total porosity and macroporosity than composts. For the garden waste- and cattle manure-amended feedstocks, vermicomposts had a higher microbial biomass C than the composts and for all three feedstocks, basal respiration and metabolic quotient were greatest for vermicomposts. It was concluded that composting is a robust process suitable for treatment of a range of organic wastes but, because of the nutritional requirements of the earthworms, vermicomposting is a much less robust and was only suitable for the cattle manure-amended feedstock.

Background Pharmacotherapeutic agents that could facilitate extinction of cocaine cues would be useful in the treatment of cocaine addiction. We tested whether SR 21502, a selective dopamine (DA) D3 receptor antagonist, can facilitate extinction of cocaine conditioned place preference (CPP) in rats. Methods In experiment 1, cocaine (10 mg/kg) CPP was first established and then extinguished. During the extinction phase the rats were injected with SR 21502 and placed in the previously cocaine-paired compartment for four sessions and vehicle in the other compartment on four alternating sessions. The rats were then tested again for cocaine CPP. In experiment 2, different groups of rats were trained to associate SR 21502 with one compartment and saline with the other. Results In experiment 1, the animals spent significantly more time in the cocaine-paired compartment after cocaine conditioning than they did before conditioning. Subsequently, the animals treated with SR 21502 during the extinction phase spent significantly less time in the cocaine-paired compartment than the vehicle group. In experiment 2, animals conditioned with SR 21502 preferred neither side of the CPP apparatus, indicating that SR 21502 produced no effects of its own. Conclusions These findings suggest that treatment with SR 21502, a DA D3 receptor antagonist, in the presence of cocaine cues can facilitate extinction of cocaine CPP and further suggest that this compound might be an effective cocaine addiction treatment.

The effects of addition of acidifying agents (phosphogypsum, iron sulphate, elemental S, ammonium sulphate and biosolids) on pH of bauxite processing residue sand, and on subsequent leaching of Na and other ions was investigated in 6- and 10-week incubation/leaching experiments. Addition of phosphogypsum and iron sulphate caused a reduction in pH and ESP both before and after leaching. Addition of biosolids reduced pH prior to leaching and reduced ESP and increased ECEC before and after leaching. By contrast, addition of elemental S or ammonium sulphate had no effect on pH or ESP either before or after leaching. Addition of soil and/or biosolids to the residue sand did not significantly promote S oxidation or nitrification. In all treatments leaching caused a substantial reduction in pH as well as exchangeable Na, EC and ESP. In control treatments pH was reduced by about two units following leaching. Addition of gypsum and iron sulphate resulted in precipitation of alkalinity and leaching of Na+ with added SO42− as the major balancing anion. By contrast, where there was no initial decrease in pH (e.g. control), Na+ leached with HCO3−/CO32 (i.e. soluble alkalinity) as the main balancing anions and, as a result, residue pH was decreased. This occurred because the mobile Na+ ion was present in residue at concentrations greatly in excess of the CEC of the residue sand. It was concluded that leaving residue sand for a sufficient period of time under leaching conditions is a very important management strategy since it will result in a substantial reduction in pH, EC exchangeable Na and ESP making conditions much more conducive for revegetation.

When policies are changed, it is not uncommon for losers to be compensated. Economic theory and quantitative analysis are useful in determining the efficiency gains/losses associated with a policy change, but are little help in deciding what the approach to compensation should be. The amount of compensation varies, depending on, in part, the political clout of the parties being negatively affected by a policy change—compensation is what politicians and the sector demanding compensation can agree on. We formulate four approaches to producer compensation within the context of the Ontario Tobacco Transition Program, where producers would have suffered losses in the absence of compensation. The approaches range from providing zero compensation to providing compensation based on the entire value of the tobacco quota. The Canadian government chose the latter and compensated producers for the termination of the tobacco quota program based on an approach that far exceeded other possible compensation approaches. Rh-substituted pyrochlore catalysts were prepared and tested for the partial oxidation (POX) of n -tetradecane (TD), a diesel fuel surrogate. The catalysts were substituted lanthanum zirconates with the chemical formula La 1.89 Ca 0.11 Zr 1.75− x Rh x Y 0.25 O 7− y (with either 0, 1, 2, or 3 wt% of Rh loading). The catalysts underwent a variety of pre- and post-reaction characterization with a focus on deposited carbon, the primary cause of catalyst deactivation. To assess the nature of potential catalytic sites (typically attributed to Rh), each substituted catalyst produced three temperature programmed reduction peaks, with an increase in the most reducible sites at higher Rh loadings. In additions, the catalysts with 2 and 3 wt% Rh substitution displayed a secondary crystal phase in their XRD spectra; however, this phase disappeared when the sample was reduced up to 900 °C, representative of reaction conditions. To assess carbon deposition after reaction testing, a temperature programmed oxidation (TPO) was conducted on each sample from 250 to 750 °C. Each sample produced three CO 2 peaks between 250 and 550 °C, referred to as low temperature carbon (LTC) peaks, and two peaks at higher temperatures (>600 °C). The 2 wt% catalyst was run for different times under POX of TD, and the TPO results showed that the amount of LTC reached a steady state within 2 h and did not increase even up to 18 h under reaction conditions. This indicates that the LTC is not likely responsible for catalyst deactivation. In contrast, the quantity of carbon associated with the higher temperature peaks under TPO increased with reaction time. The carbon associated with the high temperature peaks was highly graphitic, and is typically attributed to deposits on the catalyst inert surfaces and/or inert bed material. After a partial burn-off of the LTC, Raman analysis showed no significant change in the surface carbon. These results suggest that improvement in catalyst performance may be accomplished by modification of the catalyst formulation to increase the resistance to carbon formation on the oxide surface. Such modifications include surface promoters, B-site dopant level, and addition of an oxygen-conducting support. Future work will explore these approaches.

Understanding how cycles of forest-defoliating insects are affected by forest destruction is of major importance for forest management. Achieving such an understanding with data alone is difficult, however, because population cycles are typically driven by species interactions that are highly nonlinear. We therefore constructed a mathematical model to investigate the effects of forest destruction on defoliator cycles, focusing on defoliator cycles driven by parasitoids. Our model shows that forest destruction can increase defoliator density when parasitoids disperse much farther than defoliators because the benefits of reduced defoliator mortality due to increased parasitoid dispersal mortality exceed the costs of increased defoliator dispersal mortality. This novel result can explain observations of increased outbreak duration with increasing forest fragmentation in forest tent caterpillar populations. Our model also shows that larger habitat patches can mitigate habitat loss, with clear implications for forest management. To better understand our results, we developed an approximate model that shows that defoliator spatial dynamics can be predicted from the proportion of dispersing animals that land in suitable habitat. This approximate model is practically useful because its parameters can be estimated from widely available data. Our model thus suggests that forest destruction may exacerbate defoliator outbreaks but that management practices could mitigate such effects.

The tectonic and paleoceanographic setting of the Great Australian Bight (GAB) and the Mentelle Basin (MB; adjacent to Naturaliste Plateau) offered an outstanding opportunity to investigate Cretaceous and Cenozoic climate change and ocean dynamics during the last phase of breakup among remnant Gondwana continents. Sediment recovered from sites in both regions during International Ocean Discovery Program Expedition 369 will provide a new perspective on Earth’s temperature variation at sub-polar latitudes (60°–62°S) across the extremes of the mid-Cretaceous hot greenhouse climate and the cooling that followed. The primary goals of the expedition were to Investigate the timing and causes for the rise and collapse of the Cretaceous hot greenhouse climate and how this climate mode affected the climate-ocean system and oceanic biota; Determine the relative roles of productivity, ocean temperature, and ocean circulation at high southern latitudes during Cretaceous oceanic anoxic events (OAEs); Identify the main source regions for deep-water and intermediate-water masses in the southeast Indian Ocean and how these changed during Gondwana breakup; Characterize how oceanographic conditions at the MB changed during the Cenozoic opening of the Tasman Passage and restriction of the Indonesian Gateway; Resolve questions on the volcanic and sedimentary origins of the Australo-Antarctic Gulf and Mentelle Basin and provide stratigraphic control on the age and nature of the prebreakup successions. Hole U1512A in the GAB recovered a 691 m thick sequence of black claystone ranging from the early Turonian to the early Campanian. Age control is primarily based on calcareous nannofossils, but the presence of other microfossil groups provided consistent but low-resolution control. Despite the lithologic uniformity, long- and short-term variations in natural gamma ray and magnetic susceptibility intensities show cyclic alternations that suggest an orbital control of sediment deposition that will be useful for developing an astrochronology for the sequence. Sites U1513–U1516 were drilled between 850 and 3900 m water depth in the MB and penetrated 774, 517, 517, and 542 meters below seafloor (mbsf), respectively. Under a thin layer of Pleistocene–upper Miocene sediment, Site U1513 cored a succession of Cretaceous units from the Campanian to the Valanginian. Site U1514 sampled an expanded Pleistocene–Eocene sequence and terminated in the upper Albian. The Cenomanian–Turonian interval at Site U1514 recovered deformed sedimentary rocks that probably represent a detachment zone. Site U1515 is located on the west Australian margin at 850 m water depth and was the most challenging site to core because much of the upper 350 m was either chert or poorly consolidated sand. However, the prebreakup Jurassic(?) sediments interpreted from the seismic profiles were successfully recovered. Site U1516 cored an expanded Pleistocene, Neogene, and Paleogene section and recovered a complete Cenomanian/Turonian boundary interval containing five layers with high total organic carbon content. Recovery of well-preserved calcareous microfossil assemblages from different paleodepths will enable generation of paleotemperature and biotic records that span the rise and collapse of the Cretaceous hot greenhouse (including OAEs 1d and 2), providing insight to resultant changes in deep-water and surface water circulation that can be used to test predictions from earth system models. Paleotemperature proxies and other data will reveal the timing, magnitude, and duration of peak hothouse temperatures and any cold snaps that could have allowed growth of a polar ice sheet. The sites will also record the mid-Eocene–early Oligocene opening of the Tasman Gateway and the Miocene–Pliocene restriction of the Indonesian Gateway; both passages have important effects on global oceanography and climate. Understanding the paleoceanographic changes in a regional context provides a global test on models of Cenomanian–Turonian oceanographic and climatic evolution related both to extreme Turonian warmth and the evolution of OAE 2. The Early Cretaceous volcanic rocks and underlying Jurassic(?) sediments cored in different parts of the MB provide information on the timing of different stages of the Gondwana breakup. The recovered cores provide sufficient new age constraints to underpin a reevaluation of the basin-wide seismic stratigraphy and tectonic models for the region.

The potential to use water treatment sludge and bauxite as active filter media in constructed wetlands to remove As, V and Mo from alkaline drainage originating from seawater-neutralized bauxite processing residue was evaluated in laboratory batch and column studies. Batch adsorption studies showed that increasing the electrolyte concentration from 0.01 to 0.30 M NaCl (the typical electrolyte strength of the drainage) increased adsorption of all three oxyanions onto both media while increasing initial pH from 6.7 to 8.3 (the typical pH of drainage) and using granules (1–2 mm dia.) rather than ground material ( V. In continuous flow column studies from single element solutions (1 mg L−1), breakthrough curves for Mo occurred first and greater than three times more eluent passed through the columns before breakthrough of V and then As occurred. When multi-element solutions were used, less volume of eluent was required for breakthrough of all three anions and the volume required before breakthrough of As was greatly reduced compared to that for V. The possibility that the strong ability of V to compete with As and particularly Mo could cause desorption of previously adsorbed Mo and As and their movement through a wetland filter needs to be further investigated. It was concluded that molybdate is the least strongly held oxyanion and that a decrease in solution pH within the wetland would greatly improve Mo removal efficiency.

Classical theories of biological invasions predict constant rates of spread that can be estimated from measurable life history parameters, but such outcomes depend strongly on assumptions that are often unmet in nature. Subsequent advances have demonstrated how relaxing assumptions of these foundational models results in other spread patterns seen in nature, including invasions that accelerate through time, or that alternate among periods of expansion, retraction, and stasis of range boundaries. In this paper, we examine how periodic population fluctuations affect temporal patterns of range expansion by coupling empirical data on the gypsy moth invasion in North America with insights from a model incorporating population cycles, Allee effects, and stratified diffusion. In an analysis of field data, we found that gypsy moth spread exhibits pulses with a period of 6 yr, which field data and model simulations suggest is the result of a 6-yr population cycle in established populations near the invasion front. Model simulations show that the development of periodic behavior in range expansion depends primarily on the period length of population cycles. The period length of invasion pulses corresponded to the population cycle length, and the regularity of invasion pulses tended to decline with increases in population cycle length. A key insight of this research is that dynamics of established populations, behind the invasion front, can have strong effects on spread. Our findings suggest that coordination between separate management programs targeting low-density spreading and established outbreaking populations, respectively, could increase the efficacy of efforts to mitigate gypsy moth impacts. Given the variety of species experiencing population fluctuations, Allee effects, and stratified diffusion, insights from this study are potentially important to understanding how the range boundaries of many species change.

Commonly used filter media such as sand and gravel have low capacities to adsorb phosphate and heavy metals so that constructed wetlands are often ineffective for their removal. Industrial wastes such as blast furnace slag, steel slag, and alum water treatment sludge, which have reactive Fe/Al hydrous oxide and CaCO3 adsorption surfaces, have been used successfully as active filter materials for P removal in pilot scale and/or full-scale wetlands/filters. Their use and effectiveness can, however, be affected by conditions in the wetland. The most important factors include changes from reducing to oxidizing conditions and vice versa, changes in pH, the presence of growing macrophytes and accumulation of soluble and solid-state organic matter in the filter material. The extent to which these factors interact with, and affect, P and metal adsorption by active filter materials still requires quantification. In this paper we critically examine the biostratigraphy and systematics of late Albian–Coniacian biserial planktic foraminifera using measurements and qualitative observations from SEM and X-radiograph images of exquisitely preserved specimens from hemipelagic sediments of southeast Tanzania, augmented by analogous observations of selected Ocean Drilling Program samples and holotypes and paratypes of nearly all species. We document interspecific differences and intraspecific variability, and propose a revised phylogeny for Cretaceous biserial planktic foraminifera placed within a refined biostratigraphic framework. Taxonomic emendations are proposed for the genera Protoheterohelix Georgescu & Huber, 2009, and Planoheterohelix Georgescu & Huber, 2009, and for the species Pr. washitensis (Tappan, 1940), Pr. obscura Georgescu & Huber, 2009, Pl. moremani (Cushman, 1938), Pl. reussi (Cushman, 1938), and Laeviheterohelix reniformis (Marie, 1941). In addition, a neotype is designated for Pl. globulosa (Ehrenberg, 1840), and Pl. praenuttalli n. sp. is described. Biserial speciation events are recognized in the planktic foraminiferal Rotalipora cushmani Zone (latest Cenomanian), Helvetoglobotruncana helvetica Zone (early Turonian), and at the Helvetoglobotruncana helvetica-Marginotruncana schneegansi zonal boundary (middle Turonian).

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a common disorder as currently defined. Patients with CKD face two major hazards: cardiovascular disease and—in a minority—progression to end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Advanced CKD also causes numerous metabolic and other complications. The management of CKD involves excluding acute kidney injury, diagnosing the cause of CKD, slowing progression, and detecting and treating complications. If patients do reach ESRD, then renal replacement therapy (RRT) options must be considered. These include haemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, or transplantation. Haemodialysis requires creation of an arteriovenous fistula or insertion of a prosthetic graft while peritoneal dialysis necessitates the insertion of a catheter into the abdominal cavity. All forms of dialysis access are associated with complications both in the short and long term. However, they remain vital and central to the life and the well-being of the end-stage renal patient on dialysis.

Simple Summary Physical fences are not always possible, thus automated technology called “virtual fencing” provides a potential solution. Virtual fencing uses Global Positioning System (GPS) technology and animals wear collar devices. As animals approach the virtual fence line, the collar emits an audio tone; if the animals walk further forward, they receive an electrical stimulus. If the animal turns around after the audio tone, they receive no electrical stimulus. However, no studies to date have looked at how animals respond when virtual fences have moved to different paddock locations. Virtual boundaries were set up to restrict six beef cattle wearing collars to different paddock areas. Within a few days, the animals were able to avoid the electrical stimulus by learning to turn away from the fence when they heard the audio tone. Over several weeks, the virtual fence was moved to three different locations within the paddock, and the animals rapidly learned it had moved, turning away at the audio tone the majority of the time. This shows that animals can learn the different collar signals and avoid moving virtual boundaries via the audio tone. The application of virtual fencing to farms enables improved animal management and animal exclusion from environmentally sensitive areas. Abstract Global Positioning System (GPS)-based virtual fences offer the potential to improve the management of grazing animals. Prototype collar devices utilising patented virtual fencing algorithms were placed on six Angus heifers in a 6.15 hectare paddock. After a “no fence” period, sequential, shifting virtual fences restricted the animals to 40%, 60%, and 80% of the paddock area widthways and 50% lengthways across 22 days. Audio cues signaled the virtual boundary, and were paired with electrical stimuli if the animals continued forward into the boundary. Within approximately 48 h, the cattle learned the 40% fence and were henceforth restricted to the subsequent inclusion zones a minimum of 96.70% (±standard error 0.01%) of the time. Over time, the animals increasingly stayed within the inclusion zones using audio cues alone, and on average, approached the new fence within 4.25 h. The animals were thus attentive to the audio cue, not the fence location. The time spent standing and lying and the number of steps were similar between inclusion zones (all p ≥ 0.42). More lying bouts occurred at the 80% and lengthways inclusion zones relative to “no fence” (p = 0.04). Further research should test different cattle groups in variable paddock settings and measure physiological welfare responses to the virtual fencing stimuli.

The effects of increasing pH on the adsorption and extractability of Si in two Si-deficient Australian sugarcane soils was investigated and the effects of increasing rates of fertilizer Si (as blast furnace slag) on pH and extractable Si were also examined. Equilibrium studies showed that maximum adsorption of Si by the two soils occurred in the pH range 9-10. When soil pH was increased from 5.0 to 6.5, subsequent adsorption of Si by the two soils, as measured by adsorption isotherms, increased. After incubation with progressive lime additions there was a decline in CaCl2- extractable Si due to its increased adsorption and an increase in acid (H2SO4- and acetic acid)-extractable (mainly adsorbed) Si. The increase in acid extractable Si was greater than the decrease in CaCl2- extractable Si suggesting a supply from an additional source. Alkali (Na2CO3 and Tiron)-extractable Si decreased greatly with increasing pH suggesting dissolution of the amorphous (mainly biogenic) pool of silica was occurring with increasing pH. When increasing rates of slag were incubated with the soils, pH, CaCl2- and acid- extractable Si were all increased because upon dissolution slags release both silicic acid and OH- ions. There was, therefore, a positive relationship between extractable Si and soil pH. However, Na2CO3-and Tiron-extractable Si decreased with increasing slag rates (and increasing soil pH) suggesting dissolution of the biogenic pool of soil Si. It was concluded that future research needs to examine the desorption potential of adsorbed Si and the effects of liming on dissolution of the biogenic pool of soil silica under field conditions.

Our current understanding of silicon (Si) availability in agricultural soils is reviewed and knowledge gaps are highlighted. Silicon is a beneficial rather than essential plant nutrient and yield responses to its application have been frequently demonstrated in Si-accumulator crops such as rice and sugarcane. These crops are typically grown on highly weathered (desilicated) soils where soil solution Si concentrations are low. Increased yields are the result of simultaneous increases in plant tolerance to a wide range of biotic (plant pathogens, insect pests) and abiotic (water shortage, excess salts, metal toxicities) stresses. Traditionally, soil solution Si is viewed as being supplied by dissolution of primary and secondary minerals and buffered by adsorption/desorption of silicate onto Al and Fe hydrous oxide surfaces. In recent years it has become recognized that phytogenic cycling of Si [uptake of Si by plants, formation of phytogenic silica (SiO · nHO) mainly in leaves and subsequent return of this silica to soils in plant litter] is the main determinant of soil solution Si concentrations in natural forests and grasslands. Considerable diminution of the phytogenic Si pool in agricultural soils is likely due to regular removal of Si in harvested products. A range of extractants (unbuffered salts, acetate-based solutions, and acids) can provide valuable information on the Si status of soils and the likelihood of a yield response in rice and sugarcane. The most common Si fertilizers used are industrial byproducts (e.g., blast furnace slag, steel slag, ferromanganous slag, Ca slag). Since agriculture promotes soil desilication and Si is presently being promoted as a broad spectrum plant prophylactic, the future use of Si in agriculture is likely to increase. Aspects that require future research include the role of specific adsorption of silicate onto hydrous oxides, the significance of phytogenic Si in agricultural soils, the extent of loss of phytogenic Si due to crop harvest, the role of hydroxyaluminosilicate formation in fertilized soils, and the effect of soil pH on Si availability.

The active sites and kinetics of dry reforming of methane (DRM) on lanthanum zirconate (LZ) pyrochlore catalysts are studied as a function of Rh substitution, temperature, and partial pressures of CH4 and CO2. In this work, we focus specifically on determining the catalytic active sites for CH4 and CO2 activation and their role in the DRM mechanism over the two Rh-substituted pyrochlores, i.e., 2 wt% Rh, designated L2RhZ and 5 wt% Rh, designated L5RhZ. Kinetic rate modeling suggests dual-site mechanism, where CH4 and CO2 are activated on different sites (dual-site mechanism). Eleven different rate models were tested against the kinetic rate data obtained over these two Rh pyrochlores. Statistical analysis shows valid and similar fits for only two of eleven models: one in which activation of CH4 is rate-determining and one in which CO2 activation is rate-determining. This dual-site mechanism is studied further in detail to test the validity of the intermediate steps predicted by the kinetic model. CH4/CD4 isotope switching shows a strong deuterium kinetic isotope effect on CH4 and CO2 conversion, suggesting that CH4 dissociation is the rate-determining step. Higher apparent activation energies of CH4 (Ea, CH4) versus CO2 (Ea, CO2) on both catalysts also confirm that CH4 activation is rate-determining. Basic nature of La–O sites activates mildly acidic CO2 to form La2O2CO3 complexes as confirmed by FTIR. From different polymorphs of La2O2CO3, the spectator and reactive species were distinguished by pulsing CH4 over La2O2CO3. Alternating pulses (CH4/Ar → CO2/Ar → CH4/Ar) at 550 °C showed simultaneous formation of CO and H2, suggesting that surface carbon, formed by CH4 decomposition, is oxidized by H2O; a crucial step in understanding the catalytic behavior of pyrochlores in the reaction mechanism. These experiments were used to identify the two types of sites taking part in the dual-site DRM mechanism. The work reported here helps in determining a single set of kinetically significant steps that most closely represent the mechanistic scheme of DRM over L2RhZ and L5RhZ.

Despite considerable interest in the impacts of forest-defoliating insects and pesticide-based suppression of defoliator outbreaks on non-target arthropods, studies have often been hampered by the unpredictability of outbreaks. We evaluated the long-term impacts of forest defoliation by gypsy moths, and the suppression of their outbreaks with Bacillus thuringiensis var. kurstaki (Btk), on native moths. Three years after a gypsy moth outbreak, moth diversity and abundance were compared among sites that were defoliated but not sprayed with Btk (defoliated sites), defoliated and sprayed (Btk sites) or neither (undisturbed sites). We conducted separate evaluations of the effects of disturbance history on the overall moth community, taxonomic subgroups (families) and moths differing in their dietary overlap with gypsy moths. Analyses of the full moth community revealed no effects of disturbance history on local (α) moth diversity or diversity of moths among sites (β-diversity). The α- or β-diversities of moths classified by their dietary overlap with gypsy moths (overlapping, partially overlapping, not overlapping) were also not affected by disturbance history. However, taxonomic affiliation was important. Geometridae α-diversity in late summer was significantly lower in defoliated sites than in Btk or undisturbed sites. No effects of disturbance history on moth abundances were found. We conclude gypsy moth defoliation had negative effects on a major moth family (Geometridae), although Btk application may have protected Geometridae from the adverse effects of gypsy moth defoliation. The results of the present study help to clarify the relative, and sometimes countervailing, effects of defoliators and microbial pesticides on forest communities.

To identify general patterns in the effects of climate change on the outbreak dynamics of forest-defoliating insect species, we examined a 212-year record (1800-2011) of outbreaks of five pine-defoliating species (Bupalus piniarius, Panolis flammea, Lymantria monacha, Dendrolimus pini, and Diprion pini) in Bavaria, Germany for the evidence of climate-driven changes in the severity, cyclicity, and frequency of outbreaks. We also accounted for historical changes in forestry practices and examined effects of past insecticide use to suppress outbreaks. Analysis of relationships between severity or occurrence of outbreaks and detrended measures of temperature and precipitation revealed a mixture of positive and negative relationships between temperature and outbreak activity. Two moth species (P. flammea and Dendrolimus pini) exhibited lower outbreak activity following years or decades of unusually warm temperatures, whereas a sawfly (Diprion pini), for which voltinism is influenced by temperature, displayed increased outbreak occurrence in years of high summer temperatures. We detected only one apparent effect of precipitation, which showed Dendrolimus pini outbreaks tending to follow drought. Wavelet analysis of outbreak time series suggested climate change may be associated with collapse of L. monacha and Dendrolimus pini outbreak cycles (loss of cyclicity and discontinuation of outbreaks, respectively), but high-frequency cycles for B. piniarius and P. flammea in the late 1900s. Regional outbreak severity was generally not related to past suppression efforts (area treated with insecticides). Recent shifts in forestry practices affecting tree species composition roughly coincided with high-frequency outbreak cycles in B. piniarius and P. flammea but are unlikely to explain the detected relationships between climate and outbreak severity or collapses of outbreak cycles. Our results highlight both individualistic responses of different pine-defoliating species to climate changes and some patterns that are consistent across defoliator species in this and other forest systems, including collapsing of population cycles.

We provide a theoretical and empirical comparison of two historic production quota buyouts: the 2002 US Peanut Quota Buyout and the 2004 US Tobacco Quota Buyout. Producer compensation under the US Peanut Quota Buyout came from the treasury while the US Tobacco Buyout was paid for by a consumer tax (i.e., tobacco tax). Given these two buyouts, an important question arises: How does the method of compensation affect distribution and efficiency? Producers, consumers, and society favor a treasury buyout (TB) for several reasons. Producers are compensated considerably more under a TB, consumers are not burdened with the charge of funding the buyout, and society does not face additional efficiency losses due to the buyout.

This article analyzes the impact of removing the U.S. tobacco program in both a partial and general welfare economics framework. In a partial-equilibrium framework, a consumer tax-funded quota buyout can result in producer gains, consumer losses, net losses resulting from higher prices, and deadweight losses. In a general-equilibrium framework, society can gain from the buyout resulting from considerable potential savings from reduced healthcare costs attributable to a reduction in smoking. Additionally, we present a model that addresses the addictive qualities of tobacco while considering the effects of the quota buyout. We also conclude that another possible effect of the buyout is an increase in worker productivity because employees who are able to quit smoking reduce the amount of smoking-related sick days taken.
