Recently, the claim of "near-ambient superconductivity" in a N-doped lutetium hydride attracted enormous following-up investigations in the community of condensed matter physics and material sciences. But quite soon, the experimental results from different groups indicate consistently that no evidence of near-ambient superconductivity is found in the samples synthesized by the same method as the reported one, or by the other alternative methods. From our extended high-pressure heat capacity and magnetic susceptibility measurements on the samples prepared with the lutetium foil and H2/N2 gas mixture, we report the finding of a magnetic transition at the temperature about 56 K. Our results show that this magnetic phase is robust against pressure up to 4.3 GPa, which covers the critical pressure of boosting the claimed near room temperature superconductivity., Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures

Monocular Re-Localization (MRL) is a critical component in autonomous applications, estimating 6 degree-of-freedom ego poses w.r.t. the scene map based on monocular images. In recent decades, significant progress has been made in the development of MRL techniques. Numerous algorithms have accomplished extraordinary success in terms of localization accuracy and robustness. In MRL, scene maps are represented in various forms, and they determine how MRL methods work and how MRL methods perform. However, to the best of our knowledge, existing surveys do not provide systematic reviews about the relationship between MRL solutions and their used scene map representation. This survey fills the gap by comprehensively reviewing MRL methods from such a perspective, promoting further research. 1) We commence by delving into the problem definition of MRL, exploring current challenges, and comparing ours with existing surveys. 2) Many well-known MRL methods are categorized and reviewed into five classes according to the representation forms of utilized map, i.e., geo-tagged frames, visual landmarks, point clouds, vectorized semantic map, and neural network-based map. 3) To quantitatively and fairly compare MRL methods with various map, we introduce some public datasets and provide the performances of some state-of-the-art MRL methods. The strengths and weakness of MRL methods with different map are analyzed. 4) We finally introduce some topics of interest in this field and give personal opinions. In this paper, we propose a new definition of stable $(r+1)$-th capillary hypersurfaces from variational perspective for any $1\leq r\leq n-1$. More precisely, we define stable $(r+1)$-th capillary hypersurfaces to be smooth local minimizers of a new energy functional under volume-preserving and contact angle-preserving variations. PatchMatch Multi-View Stereo (PatchMatch MVS) is one of the popular MVS approaches, owing to its balanced accuracy and efficiency. In this paper, we propose Polarimetric PatchMatch multi-view Stereo (PolarPMS), which is the first method exploiting polarization cues to PatchMatch MVS. The key of PatchMatch MVS is to generate depth and normal hypotheses, which form local 3D planes and slanted stereo matching windows, and efficiently search for the best hypothesis based on the consistency among multi-view images. In addition to standard photometric consistency, our PolarPMS evaluates polarimetric consistency to assess the validness of a depth and normal hypothesis, motivated by the physical property that the polarimetric information is related to the object's surface normal. Experimental results demonstrate that our PolarPMS can improve the accuracy and the completeness of reconstructed 3D models, especially for texture-less surfaces, compared with state-of-the-art PatchMatch MVS methods.

The proposed Circular Electron Positron Collider (CEPC) imposes new challenges for the vertex detector in terms of pixel size and material budget. A Monolithic Active Pixel Sensor (MAPS) prototype called TaichuPix, based on a column drain readout architecture, has been developed to address the need for high spatial resolution. In order to evaluate the performance of the TaichuPix-3 chips, a beam test was carried out at DESY II TB21 in December 2022. Meanwhile, the Data Acquisition (DAQ) for a muti-plane configuration was tested during the beam test. This work presents the characterization of the TaichuPix-3 chips with two different processes, including cluster size, spatial resolution, and detection efficiency. The analysis results indicate the spatial resolution better than 5 $\mu m$ and the detection efficiency exceeds 99.5 % for both TaichuPix-3 chips with the two different processes.

IMPORTANCE The response effectiveness of different large language models (LLMs) and various individuals, including medical students, graduate students, and practicing physicians, in pediatric ophthalmology consultations, has not been clearly established yet. OBJECTIVE Design a 100-question exam based on pediatric ophthalmology to evaluate the performance of LLMs in highly specialized scenarios and compare them with the performance of medical students and physicians at different levels. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS This survey study assessed three LLMs, namely ChatGPT (GPT-3.5), GPT-4, and PaLM2, were assessed alongside three human cohorts: medical students, postgraduate students, and attending physicians, in their ability to answer questions related to pediatric ophthalmology. It was conducted by administering questionnaires in the form of test papers through the LLM network interface, with the valuable participation of volunteers. MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES Mean scores of LLM and humans on 100 multiple-choice questions, as well as the answer stability, correlation, and response confidence of each LLM. RESULTS GPT-4 performed comparably to attending physicians, while ChatGPT (GPT-3.5) and PaLM2 outperformed medical students but slightly trailed behind postgraduate students. Furthermore, GPT-4 exhibited greater stability and confidence when responding to inquiries compared to ChatGPT (GPT-3.5) and PaLM2. CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE Our results underscore the potential for LLMs to provide medical assistance in pediatric ophthalmology and suggest significant capacity to guide the education of medical students., Comment: 6 figures, 1 table

Purpose: The performance of three different large language models (LLMS) (GPT-3.5, GPT-4, and PaLM2) in answering ophthalmology professional questions was evaluated and compared with that of three different professional populations (medical undergraduates, medical masters, and attending physicians). Methods: A 100-item ophthalmology single-choice test was administered to three different LLMs (GPT-3.5, GPT-4, and PaLM2) and three different professional levels (medical undergraduates, medical masters, and attending physicians), respectively. The performance of LLM was comprehensively evaluated and compared with the human group in terms of average score, stability, and confidence. Results: Each LLM outperformed undergraduates in general, with GPT-3.5 and PaLM2 being slightly below the master's level, while GPT-4 showed a level comparable to that of attending physicians. In addition, GPT-4 showed significantly higher answer stability and confidence than GPT-3.5 and PaLM2. Conclusion: Our study shows that LLM represented by GPT-4 performs better in the field of ophthalmology. With further improvements, LLM will bring unexpected benefits in medical education and clinical decision making in the near future.

With the growing penetration of renewable energy resource, electricity market prices have exhibited greater volatility. Therefore, it is important for Energy Storage Systems(ESSs) to leverage the multidimensional nature of energy market bids to maximize profitability. However, current learning methods cannot fully utilize the high-dimensional price-quantity bids in the energy markets. To address this challenge, we modify the common reinforcement learning(RL) process by proposing a new bid representation method called Neural Network Embedded Bids (NNEBs). NNEBs refer to market bids that are represented by monotonic neural networks with discrete outputs. To achieve effective learning of NNEBs, we first learn a neural network as a strategic mapping from the market price to ESS power output with RL. Then, we re-train the network with two training modifications to make the network output monotonic and discrete. Finally, the neural network is equivalently converted into a high-dimensional bid for bidding. We conducted experiments over real-world market datasets. We present a cost-effective method to integrate speech into a large language model (LLM), resulting in a Contextual Speech Model with Instruction-following/in-context-learning Capabilities (COSMIC) multi-modal LLM. Using GPT-3.5, we generate Speech Comprehension Test Question-Answer (SQA) pairs from speech transcriptions for supervised instruction tuning. With under 30 million trainable parameters and only 450 hours of English speech data, COSMIC demonstrates emerging capabilities in instruction-following and in-context learning. Equipped with such capabilities, COSMIC achieves a maximum 33.18 BLEU score in 0-shot EN-to-X speech to text translation (S2TT) and a significant boost in the 1-shot setting. Additionally, there is an average 25.8\% relative Word Error Rate (WER) reduction for 1-shot cross-domain adaptation. COSMIC exhibits a significant automatic speech recognition (ASR) accuracy gain in contextual biasing tasks due to its instruction-following capability.

The growing need for instant spoken language transcription and translation is driven by increased global communication and cross-lingual interactions. This has made offering translations in multiple languages essential for user applications. Traditional approaches to automatic speech recognition (ASR) and speech translation (ST) have often relied on separate systems, leading to inefficiencies in computational resources, and increased synchronization complexity in real time. In this paper, we propose a streaming Transformer-Transducer (T-T) model able to jointly produce many-to-one and one-to-many transcription and translation using a single decoder. We introduce a novel method for joint token-level serialized output training based on timestamp information to effectively produce ASR and ST outputs in the streaming setting. It is typically challenging for visual or visual-inertial odometry systems to handle the problems of dynamic scenes and pure rotation. In this work, we design a novel visual-inertial odometry (VIO) system called RD-VIO to handle both of these two problems. Firstly, we propose an IMU-PARSAC algorithm which can robustly detect and match keypoints in a two-stage process. In the first state, landmarks are matched with new keypoints using visual and IMU measurements. We collect statistical information from the matching and then guide the intra-keypoint matching in the second stage. Secondly, to handle the problem of pure rotation, we detect the motion type and adapt the deferred-triangulation technique during the data-association process. We make the pure-rotational frames into the special subframes. When solving the visual-inertial bundle adjustment, they provide additional constraints to the pure-rotational motion. We evaluate the proposed VIO system on public datasets and online comparison. Experiments show the proposed RD-VIO has obvious advantages over other methods in dynamic environments. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy serves as an important tool to analyze chemicals and proteins in bioengineering. However, NMR signals are easily contaminated by noise during the data acquisition, which can affect subsequent quantitative analysis. Therefore, denoising NMR signals has been a long-time concern. In this work, we propose an optimization model-based iterative denoising method, CHORD-V, by treating the time-domain NMR signal as damped exponentials and maintaining the exponential signal form with a Vandermonde factorization. Results on both synthetic and realistic NMR data show that CHORD-V has a superior denoising performance over typical Cadzow and rQRd methods, and the state-of-the-art CHORD method. Online Social Networks (OSNs) have blossomed into prevailing transmission channels for images in the modern era. Adversarial examples (AEs) deliberately designed to mislead deep neural networks (DNNs) are found to be fragile against the inevitable lossy operations conducted by OSNs. As a result, the AEs would lose their attack capabilities after being transmitted over OSNs. In this work, we aim to design a new framework for generating robust AEs that can survive the OSN transmission; namely, the AEs before and after the OSN transmission both possess strong attack capabilities. To this end, we first propose a differentiable network termed SImulated OSN (SIO) to simulate the various operations conducted by an OSN. Specifically, the SIO network consists of two modules: 1) a differentiable JPEG layer for approximating the ubiquitous JPEG compression and 2) an encoder-decoder subnetwork for mimicking the remaining operations. Based upon the SIO network, we then formulate an optimization framework to generate robust AEs by enforcing model outputs with and without passing through the SIO to be both misled. Extensive experiments conducted over Facebook, WeChat and QQ demonstrate that our attack methods produce more robust AEs than existing approaches, especially under small distortion constraints; the performance gain in terms of Attack Success Rate (ASR) could be more than 60%. Furthermore, we build a public dataset containing more than 10,000 pairs of AEs processed by Facebook, WeChat or QQ, facilitating future research in the robust AEs generation. With the increasing prevalence of cloud computing platforms, ensuring data privacy during the cloud-based image related services such as classification has become crucial. In this study, we propose a novel privacypreserving image classification scheme that enables the direct application of classifiers trained in the plaintext domain to classify encrypted images, without the need of retraining a dedicated classifier. Moreover, encrypted images can be decrypted back into their original form with high fidelity (recoverable) using a secret key. Specifically, our proposed scheme involves utilizing a feature extractor and an encoder to mask the plaintext image through a newly designed Noise-like Adversarial Example (NAE). Such an NAE not only introduces a noise-like visual appearance to the encrypted image but also compels the target classifier to predict the ciphertext as the same label as the original plaintext image. At the decoding phase, we adopt a Symmetric Residual Learning (SRL) framework for restoring the plaintext image with minimal degradation. Extensive experiments demonstrate that 1) the classification accuracy of the classifier trained in the plaintext domain remains the same in both the ciphertext and plaintext domains; 2) the encrypted images can be recovered into their original form with an average PSNR of up to 51+ dB for the SVHN dataset and 48+ dB for the VGGFace2 dataset; 3) our system exhibits satisfactory generalization capability on the encryption, decryption and classification tasks across datasets that are different from the training one; and 4) a high-level of security is achieved against three potential threat models. Due to the powerful edge-preserving ability and low computational complexity, Guided image filter (GIF) and its improved versions has been widely applied in computer vision and image processing. However, all of them are suffered halo artifacts to some degree, as the regularization parameter increase. In the case of inconsistent structure of guidance image and input image, edge-preserving ability degradation will also happen. In this paper, a novel guided image filter is proposed by integrating an explicit first-order edge-protect constraint and an explicit residual constraint which will improve the edge-preserving ability in both cases. To illustrate the efficiency of the proposed filter, the performances are shown in some typical applications, which are single image detail enhancement, multi-scale exposure fusion, hyper spectral images classification. Both theoretical analysis and experimental results prove that the powerful edge-preserving ability of the proposed filter.

This paper studies the problem of detecting anomalous graphs using a machine learning model trained on only normal graphs, which has many applications in molecule, biology, and social network data analysis. We present a self-discriminative modeling framework for anomalous graph detection. The key idea, mathematically and numerically illustrated, is to learn a discriminator (classifier) from the given normal graphs together with pseudo-anomalous graphs generated by a model jointly trained, where we never use any true anomalous graphs and we hope that the generated pseudo-anomalous graphs interpolate between normal ones and (real) anomalous ones. Under the framework, we provide three algorithms with different computational efficiencies and stabilities for anomalous graph detection. The three algorithms are compared with several state-of-the-art graph-level anomaly detection baselines on nine popular graph datasets (four with small size and five with moderate size) and show significant improvement in terms of AUC. The success of our algorithms stems from the integration of the discriminative classifier and the well-posed pseudo-anomalous graphs, which provide new insights for anomaly detection. Moreover, we investigate our algorithms for large-scale imbalanced graph datasets. Surprisingly, our algorithms, though fully unsupervised, are able to significantly outperform supervised learning algorithms of anomalous graph detection. Cross-domain sequential recommenders (CSRs) are gaining considerable research attention as they can capture user sequential preference by leveraging side information from multiple domains. However, these works typically follow an ideal setup, i.e., different domains obey similar data distribution, which ignores the bias brought by asymmetric interaction densities (a.k.a. the inter-domain density bias). Besides, the frequently adopted mechanism (e.g., the self-attention network) in sequence encoder only focuses on the interactions within a local view, which overlooks the global correlations between different training batches. To this end, we propose an External Attention-enhanced Graph Contrastive Learning framework, namely EA-GCL. Specifically, to remove the impact of the inter-domain density bias, an auxiliary Self-Supervised Learning (SSL) task is attached to the traditional graph encoder under a multi-task learning manner. To robustly capture users' behavioral patterns, we develop an external attention-based sequence encoder that contains an MLP-based memory-sharing structure. Unlike the self-attention mechanism, such a structure can effectively alleviate the bias interference from the batch-based training scheme. Extensive experiments on two real-world datasets demonstrate that EA-GCL outperforms several state-of-the-art baselines on CSR tasks. Simultaneous Speech-to-Text translation serves a critical role in real-time crosslingual communication. Despite the advancements in recent years, challenges remain in achieving stability in the translation process, a concern primarily manifested in the flickering of partial results. In this paper, we propose a novel revision-controllable method designed to address this issue. Our method introduces an allowed revision window within the beam search pruning process to screen out candidate translations likely to cause extensive revisions, leading to a substantial reduction in flickering and, crucially, providing the capability to completely eliminate flickering. Memory constraint of always-on devices is one of the major concerns when deploying speech processing models on these devices. While larger models trained with sufficiently large amount of data generally perform better, making them fit in the device memory is a demanding challenge. In this paper, we aim to reduce model size by reparameterizing model weights across Transformer encoder layers and assuming a special weight composition and structure. More specifically, inspired by ResNet and the more recent LoRA work, we propose an approach named ResidualTransformer, where each weight matrix in a Transformer layer comprises 1) a shared full-rank component with its adjacent layers, and 2) a unique low-rank component to itself. The low-rank matrices only account for a small amount of model size increase. In addition, we add diagonal weight matrices to improve modeling capacity of the low-rank matrices. This work investigates efficient score-based black-box adversarial attacks with a high Attack Success Rate (ASR) and good generalizability. We design a novel attack method based on a Disentangled Feature space, called DifAttack, which differs significantly from the existing ones operating over the entire feature space. Specifically, DifAttack firstly disentangles an image's latent feature into an adversarial feature and a visual feature, where the former dominates the adversarial capability of an image, while the latter largely determines its visual appearance. We train an autoencoder for the disentanglement by using pairs of clean images and their Adversarial Examples (AEs) generated from available surrogate models via white-box attack methods. Eventually, DifAttack iteratively optimizes the adversarial feature according to the query feedback from the victim model until a successful AE is generated, while keeping the visual feature unaltered. In addition, due to the avoidance of using surrogate models' gradient information when optimizing AEs for black-box models, our proposed DifAttack inherently possesses better attack capability in the open-set scenario, where the training dataset of the victim model is unknown. Extensive experimental results demonstrate that our method achieves significant improvements in ASR and query efficiency simultaneously, especially in the targeted attack and open-set scenarios. Token-level serialized output training (t-SOT) was recently proposed to address the challenge of streaming multi-talker automatic speech recognition (ASR). T-SOT effectively handles overlapped speech by representing multi-talker transcriptions as a single token stream with $\langle \text{cc}\rangle$ symbols interspersed. However, the use of a naive neural transducer architecture significantly constrained its applicability for text-only adaptation. To overcome this limitation, we propose a novel t-SOT model structure that incorporates the idea of factorized neural transducers (FNT). The proposed method separates a language model (LM) from the transducer's predictor and handles the unnatural token order resulting from the use of $\langle \text{cc}\rangle$ symbols in t-SOT. We achieve this by maintaining multiple hidden states and introducing special handling of the $\langle \text{cc}\rangle$ tokens within the LM. The proposed t-SOT FNT model achieves comparable performance to the original t-SOT model while retaining the ability to reduce word error rate (WER) on both single and multi-talker datasets through text-only adaptation., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, submitted to ICASSP2024

End-to-end speech translation (ST) for conversation recordings involves several under-explored challenges such as speaker diarization (SD) without accurate word time stamps and handling of overlapping speech in a streaming fashion. In this work, we propose DiariST, the first streaming ST and SD solution. It is built upon a neural transducer-based streaming ST system and integrates token-level serialized output training and t-vector, which were originally developed for multi-talker speech recognition. Due to the absence of evaluation benchmarks in this area, we develop a new evaluation dataset, DiariST-AliMeeting, by translating the reference Chinese transcriptions of the AliMeeting corpus into English. We also propose new metrics, called speaker-agnostic BLEU and speaker-attributed BLEU, to measure the ST quality while taking SD accuracy into account. Our system achieves a strong ST and SD capability compared to offline systems based on Whisper, while performing streaming inference for overlapping speech. Searching for a universal trend by the same tuning method in different high-temperature superconductors with a similar crystal structure is a common strategy to find clues for a better understanding of the superconducting mechanism in a unified way. It is known that the hole-doped bismuth-oxide Ba1-xKxBiO3 possesses a similar perovskite structure to that of the hole-doped copper-oxide (cuprate) superconductors but also holds a comparatively high superconducting transition temperature. In this study, we report the first observation of the pressure-induced quantum phase transition (QPT) from superconducting to insulating states in a series of Ba1-xKxBiO3 single-crystal samples. A similar QPT has also been observed recently in the compressed cuprate superconductors1. Significantly, we found that the QPT observed in Ba1-xKxBiO3 is intriguingly associated with the valence change of the Bi ions in the material. These results lead us to propose that the pressure-induced valence change from Bi3+ to Bi5+ destroys the hole-doping effect on stabilizing the conductivity and corresponding superconductivity. By comparing the high-pressure behaviors observed in these two kinds of oxides, we identified another prominent feature shared by them - the more the hole-doping concentration, the higher the critical pressure required for driving the QPT., Comment: 20 pages and 4 figures

A material described as lutetium-hydrogen-nitrogen (Lu-H-N in short) was recently claimed to have near-ambient superconductivity[Gammon et al, Nature 615, 244, 2023]. If the results could be reproduced by other teams, it would be a major scientific breakthrough. Here, we report our results of transport and structure measurements on a material prepared using the same method as that reported by Gammon et al. Our X-ray diffraction measurements indicated that the obtained sample contained three substances: the FCC-1 phase (Fm-3m) with a lattice parameter a=5.03 {\AA}, the FCC-2 phase (Fm-3m) with a lattice parameter a= 4.755 {\AA} and Lu metal. These two FCC phases are identical to the those reported in the so-called near-ambient superconductor. However, we found that the samples had no evidence of superconductivity, through our resistance measurements in the temperature range of 300 - 4 K and pressure range of 0.9 - 3.4 GPa, and our magnetic susceptibility measurements in the pressure range of 0.8-3.3 GPa and temperature down to 100 K. We also used a laser heating technique to heat the sample to 1800{\deg}C and found no superconductivity in the produced dark blue samples below 6.5 GPa.
