Long-term water mass changes during 1994-2012 are examined from nine repeat hydrographic sections in the Seasonal Ice Zone along 140 degrees E, off Antarctica. Significant freshening trends are detected within most of the water masses from the bottom to surface. Bottom Water freshened by 0.008-0.009 decade(-1) below isopycnal surfaces and its layer thickness decreased by 120-160 dbar decade(-1) throughout the study period. In addition to general thinning, the layer thickness was anomalously thin in 2012, suggesting a possible link with the sudden calving of the Mertz Glacier Tongue and subsequent reduction in sea-ice production. Winter Water freshened by 0.03 decade(-1) throughout the study period, with significant interannual variability. In the offshore region, a long-term increase in precipitation can explain a substantial portion of the freshening trend. The Lower Circumpolar Deep Water on the continental slope underwent freshening at the same rate as the Bottom Water during the last two decades. Modified Shelf Water also shows robust freshening at a rate of 0.03 decade(-1). Combined with the freshening of near-surface and Bottom Water masses in this region, these data indicate freshening of the entire water column over the continental slope. This widespread freshening is broadly consistent with the enhancement of the global hydrological cycle, together with a possible acceleration of land ice melting.

We developed a system to supply Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer-EOS (AMSR-E) sea ice concentration data to the Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition (JARE). Using this system, digital sea ice concentration data were provided to JARE-51 and -52 on the icebreaker Shirase, with a lag time of 1-2 days. The sea ice data were highly useful during the deployment of the moorings. The system was also utilized by other Japanese research vessels in the Southern Ocean, and the sea ice data were helpful for the operation of the vessels.

Although it is known that satellite data are useful for obtaining ice thickness distribution for perennial sea ice or in stable thin sea ice areas, it is still an unresolved issue for the seasonal sea ice zone (SIZ). In this study, we approach the problem of ice thickness retrieval by using L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR). In the SIZ, ice thickness growth is closely related to the ridging activity and therefore surface roughness is expected to be correlated with ice thickness. L-band SAR is suitable for detecting such surface roughness, and therefore is expected to be a good tool for obtaining thickness distribution. To verify this idea, we conducted ship-borne electromagnetic (EM) inductive sounding and supersonic profiling observations with an icebreaker, coordinated with airborne L-band SAR observations in the southern Sea of Okhotsk in February 2005. The surface elevation was estimated by representing the ship's motion with a low-pass filter. Backscattering coefficients correlated well with ice thickness and surface roughness, defined by standard deviation of surface elevation. This result sheds light on the possibility of determining ice thickness distribution in the SIZ.

Background: The International Peripheral T-cell Lymphoma Project was organized to better understand the T-cell and natural killer (NK) cell lymphomas, and our task is to present the clinicopathologic correlations and therapeutic results for adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATL). Patients and methods: Among 1153 patients with T-cell or NK cell lymphomas, 126 patients (9.6%) with ATL were represented in this project. All were categorized as aggressive ATL, i.e. acute or lymphoma type, and 87% fell into the lymphoma type. Results: The median age was 62 years and the male to female ratio was 1.2 : 1. Purpose Peripheral T-cell lymphoma (PTCL) and natural killer/T-cell lymphoma (NKTCL) are rare and heterogeneous forms of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) that, in general, are associated with a poor clinical outcome. Patients and Methods A cohort of 1,314 cases of PTCL and NKTCL was organized from 22 centers worldwide, consisting of patients with previously untreated PTCL or NKTCL who were diagnosed between 1990 and 2002. Tissue biopsies, immunophenotypic markers, molecular genetic studies, and clinical information from consecutive patients at each site were reviewed by panels of four expert hematopathologists and classified according to the WHO classification. Results A diagnosis of PTCL or NKTCL was confirmed in 1,153 (87.8%) of the cases. The most common subtypes were PTCL not otherwise specified (NOS; 25.9%), angioimmunoblastic type (18.5%), NKTCL (10.4%), and adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATLL; 9.6%). Misclassification occurred in 10.4% of the cases including Hodgkin's lymphoma (3%), B-cell lymphoma (1.4%), unclassifiable lymphoma (2.8%), or a diagnosis other than lymphoma (2.3%). We found marked variation in the frequency of the various subtypes by geographic region. The use of an anthracycline-containing regimen was not associated with an improved outcome in PTCL-NOS or angioimmunoblastic type, but was associated with an improved outcome in anaplastic large-cell lymphoma, ALK positive. Conclusion The WHO classification is useful for defining subtypes of PTCL and NKTCL. However, expert hematopathology review is important for accurate diagnosis. The clinical outcome for patients with most of these lymphoma subtypes is poor with standard therapies, and novel agents and new modalities are needed to improve survival.

Several novel (sub)families of SINEs were isolated from the genomes of cetaceans and artiodactyls, and their sequences were determined. From comparisons of diagnostic nucleotides among the short interspersed repetitive elements (SINEs) in these (sub)families, we were able to draw the following conclusions. (1) After the divergence of the suborder Tylopoda (camels), the CHRS family of SINEs was newly created from tRNA(Glu) in a common ancestor of the lineages of the Suina (pigs and peccaries), Ruminantia (cows and deer), and Cetacea (whales and dolphins). (2) After divergence of the Suina lineage, the CHR-1 SINE and the CHR-2 SINE were generated successively in a common ancestor of ruminants, hippopotamuses, and cetaceans. (3) In the Ruminantia lineage, the Bov-tA SINE was generated by recombination between the CHR-2 SINE and Bov-A. (4) In the Suina lineage, the CHRS-S SINE was generated from the CHRS SINE. (5) In this latter lineage, the PRE-1 family of SINEs was created by insertion of part of the gene for tRNA(Arg) into the 5' region of the CHRS-S family. The distribution of a particular family of SINEs among species of artiodactyls and cetaceans confirmed the most recent conclusion for paraphyly of the order Artiodactyla. The present study also revealed that a newly created tRNA(Glu)-derived family of SINEs was subjected both to recombination with different units and to duplication of an internal sequence within a SINE unit to generate, during evolution, a huge superfamily of tRNA(Glu)-related families of SINEs that are now found in the genomes of artiodactyls and cetaceans.
