The interaction of stationary streaks undergoing nonmodal growth with modally unstable instability waves in a hypersonic boundary-layer flow is studied using numerical computations. The geometry and flow conditions are selected to match a relevant trajectory location from the ascent phase of the HIFiRE-1 flight experiment; namely, a 7 degree half-angle, circular cone with 2.5 mm nose radius, freestream Mach number equal to 5.30, unit Reynolds number equal to 13.42 m(−1), and wall-to-adiabatic temperature ratio of approximately 0.35 over most of the vehicle. This paper investigates the nonlinear evolution of initially linear optimal disturbances that evolve into finite-amplitude streaks, followed by an analysis of the modal instability characteristics of the perturbed, streaky boundary-layer flow. The investigation is performed with stationary direct numerical simulations (DNS) and plane-marching parabolized stability equations (PSE), in conjunction with partial-differential-equation-based planar eigenvalue analysis. The overall effect of streaks is to reduce the peak amplification factors of instability waves, indicating a possible downstream shift in the onset of laminar-turbulent transition. The present study confirms previous findings that the mean flow distorsion of the nonlinear streak perturbation reduces the amplification rates of the Mack-mode instability. More importantly, however, the present results demonstrate that the spanwise varying component of the streak can produce a larger effect on the Mack-mode amplification. The study with selected azimuthal wavenumbers for the stationary streaks reveals that a wavenumber of approximately 1.4 times larger than the optimal wavenumber is more effective in stabilizing the planar Mack-mode instabilities. In the absence of unstable first-mode waves for the present cold-wall condition, transition onset is expected to be delayed until the peak streak amplitude increases to nearly 35 percent of the freestream velocity, when intrinsic instabilities of the boundary-layer streaks begin to dominate the transition process. For streak amplitudes below that limit a significant net stabilization is achieved, yielding a potential transition delay that can exceed 100 percent of the length of the laminar region in the uncontrolled case.

Dissertação de mestrado em Geologia (área de especialização em Valorização de Recursos Geológicos), O Couto Mineiro do Bessa foi um dos principais complexos mineiros existentes no NW Transmontano. Localizado na Zona da Galiza Média e Trás-os-Montes, compreende uma faixa de metassedimentos do Silúrico e do Devónico, enquadrados pelos maciços graníticos de Montalegre e Chaves. Esta sequência está englobada no Domínio Parautóctone. Apesar da importância do couto mineiro referido, não existem muitas publicações de natureza técnico-científica relacionadas com este jazigo. Dessa forma, e reconhecendo à área envolvente ao Couto Mineiro do Bessa potencial para a existência de pegmatitos do tipo LCT (Lítio, Césio, Tântalo) com interesse económico, reveste-se de enorme importância, quer científica quer estratégica, um aprofundamento dos conhecimentos, tanto a nível estrutural como litológico. A prospecção realizada recorreu, numa primeira fase, à análise distanciada e detecção remota, que utilizou imagens obtidas através do satélite ASTER e de fotografia aérea (Google Earth Pro), associado a uma técnica de tratamento de imagem que permitiu um aumento da resolução espacial de sinais, índices e guias de prospecção. Deste modo, foram detectados uma série de alvos de prospecção, os quais foram confirmados e caracterizados, numa segunda fase, nos levantamentos de campo. As relações espaciais observadas entre os corpos filonianos (e a sua mineralogia) e as estruturas de deformação do encaixante permitiram estabelecer uma aproximação ao modelo genético de instalação do cortejo filoniano da área em estudo. Assim, verificou-se a existência de várias gerações de corpos filonianos, desde uma geração de instalação mais precoce (aplitos sem mineralização), até uma geração mais tardia de aplito-pegmatitos (com mineralização do tipo LCT), de fácies paroxismal e de instalação distal., The Bessa Mining Field was one of the most important mining complexes in the NW of Trás-os-Montes. Situated in Galiza Media and Tras-os-Montes tectonic zone, it comprises a strip of Silurian and Devonian metassediments, surrounded by the granitic massifs of Montalegre and Chaves. This sequence is included in the Parautochtonous Domain. Despite the importance of the mentioned mining field, there are no significant scientific or technical publications related to this deposit. It is due to the potential for the existence of LCT-type (Lithium, Cesium, Tantalum) pegmatites with economical interest that the increase in structural and lithological knowledge of the Bessa’s Mining Field surrounding area assumes great importance, both scientific and strategic. The performed prospection were made, initially, by distanced analysis and remote sensing, using ASTER satellite’s and air photo’s images (Google Earth Pro), associated to image’s processing techniques, which allowed an increase in the spatial resolution of signs, indexes and prospecting guides. On that way, it were detected a number of prospecting targets, which were later confirmed and characterized on field surveys. The existing spatial relationships between the filonian bodies (and their mineralogy) and the enclosing deformation structures allowed establishing an approximation to the filonian courtship’s installation genetic model of the studied area. Like this, it was found several generations of the aforementioned filonian bodies, one with an earlier installation generation (aplite without mineralization) to a later generation of aplite-pegmatites (with LCT mineralization), this one with paroxysmal facies and distal installation.

Relatório de Estágio apresentado para cumprimento dos requisitos necessários à obtenção do grau de Mestre em Ciência Política e Relações Internacionais – Especialização em Relações Internacionais Este relatório de estágio refere-­‐se à minha experiência enquanto Assistente de Projectos Nacionais, na Associação de Defesa dos Direitos Humanos, situada em Lisboa, no ano lectivo 2011/2012, no âmbito do Mestrado em Ciência Política e Relações Internacionais. Além de uma breve apresentação desta Associação e dos problemas identificados na mesma, é feita uma análise ao projecto Cidadãos do Mundo, que faz parte da vertente de Educação para o Desenvolvimento desta ONG, bem como às sessões realizadas no Lycèe français Charles Lepierre, em Lisboa, nas quais tive a oportunidade de participar.
