The key issue at this stage is how to mine the large amount of valuable user sentiment information from the massive amount of web text and create a suitable dynamic user text sentiment analysis technique. Hence, this study offers a writing feature abstraction process based on ON-LSTM and attention mechanism to address the problem that syntactic information is ignored in emotional text feature extraction. The study found that the Att-ON-LSTM improved the micro-average F1 value by 2.27% and the macro-average F value by 1.7% compared to the Bi-LSTM model with the added attentivity mechanisms. It is demonstrated that it can perform better extraction of semantic information and hierarchical structure information in emotional text and obtain more comprehensive emotional text features. In addition, the ON-LSTM-LS, a sentiment analysis model based on ON-LSTM and tag semantics, is planned to address the problem that tag semantics is ignored in the process of text sentiment analysis. The experimental consequences exposed that the accuracy of the ON-LSTM and labeled semantic sentiment analysis model on the test set is improved by 0.78% with the addition of labeled word directions compared to the model Att-ON-LSTM without the addition of labeled semantic information. The macro-averaged F1 value improved by 1.04%, which indicates that the sentiment analysis process based on ON-LSTM and tag semantics can effectively perform the text sentiment analysis task and improve the sentiment classification effect to some extent. In conclusion, deep learning models for dynamic user sentiment analysis possess high application capabilities.

Allium is a common functional vegetable with edible and medicinal value. Allium plants have a special spicy taste, so they are often used as food and seasoning in people’s diets. As a functional food, Allium also has abundant biological activities, some of which are used as drugs to treat diseases. By consuming Allium on a daily basis, people can receive active compounds of natural origin, thereby improving their health status and reducing the likelihood of disease. Steroidal saponins are important secondary metabolites of Allium, which are formed by the steroidal aglycone group and sugar. Steroidal saponins have various physiological activities, such as hypoglycemic, antiplatelet aggregation, anti-inflammatory, antitumor, antimicrobial, and enzyme activity inhibition, which is one of the key reasons why Allium has such significant health benefits. The structural diversity and rich biological activities of steroidal saponins make Allium important plants for both food and medicine. In this paper, the chemical structures, biological activities, and structure–activity relationships of steroidal saponins isolated from Allium are reviewed, and the biosynthetic pathways of some key compounds are proposed as well, to provide a molecular reference basis based on secondary metabolites for the health value of Allium.

Abstract Background The purpose of this study was to explore the efficacy and safety of high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) in gastric cancer with liver metastasis (GCLM) patients who were contraindicated for either hepatectomy or radiofrequency ablation (RFA). Methods This is a prospective, observational study on GCLM patients with 1–3 liver metastases. The primary gastric lesions were thoroughly resected and any case that exhibited extra-hepatic metastasis was excluded. A 1:2:2 propensity score-matching analysis was performed using a logistic regression model on the HIFU group, best supportive care (BSC) group, and palliative chemotherapy (PC) group. The primary endpoints include progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS). Results Forty patients were finally included, there were 8 cases in HIFU group, 16 cases in BSC group, and 16 cases in PC group. The median follow-up time for the entire cohort was 10 months. The median PFS was 16.5 months in HIFU group, 2 months in BSC group, and 5 months in PC group. The median OS was 27.5 months in the HIFU group, 7 months in the BSC group, and 11.5 months in the PC group. Additionally, no grade 3 or higher adverse events occurred in the HIFU group. Conclusion The results of this study showed that HIFU treatment could improve the long-term prognosis of GCLM patients without a significant increase in the occurrence of adverse events. Compared with PC and BSC, HIFU is the preferred treatment option when GCLM patients without extra-hepatic metastasis are unable to undergo either surgery or RFA.

Abstract Background miRNA is one of the crucial roles in the complex and dynamic network that regulates the development of skeletal muscle. The landscape of skeletal muscle miRNAs from fetus to adult in New Zealand rabbits has not been revealed yet. Results In this study, nine RNA-seq libraries of fetus, child and adult rabbits’ leg muscles were constructed. A total of 278 differentially expressed miRNAs (DEmiRNAs) were identified. In the fetus vs. child group, the main functional enrichments were involved in membrane and transport. Pathway enriched terms of up-regulated DEmiRNAs were connected with the differentiation and hypertrophy of skeletal muscle, and down-regulated ones were related to muscle structure and metabolic capacity. In the child vs. adult group, functions were associated to positioning and transportation, and pathways were relevant to ECM, muscle structure and hypertrophy. Finally, ocu-miR-185-3p and ocu-miR-370-3p, which had the most target genes, were identified as hub-miRNAs in these two groups. Conclusions In short, we summarized the highly expressed and uniquely expressed DEmiRNAs of fetus, child and adult rabbits’ leg muscles. Besides, the potential functional changes of miRNAs in two consecutive stages have been explored. Among them, the ocu-miR-185-3p and ocu-miR-370-3p with the most target genes were selected as hub-miRNAs. These data improved the understanding of the regulatory molecules of meat rabbit development, and provided a novel perspective for molecular breeding of meat rabbits.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) play a significant role in animal reproduction by regulating the expression of protein-coding genes. The hypothalamus regulates the pregnancy cycle changes in goats; however, the action mechanism of miRNAs in this regulation remains to be investigated. In this study, we performed RNA sequencing of hypothalamus samples to establish a comprehensive miRNA profiling of pregnant and non-pregnant goats. A total of 384 miRNAs were identified in the hypothalamus of pregnant goats, of which 239 were newly discovered, and 390 miRNAs were detected in the hypothalamus of non-pregnant goats of which 192 were novel miRNAs. In addition, a total of 280 differentially expressed miRNAs are characterized, of which 171 were known miRNAs and 109 were novel miRNAs. Functional enrichment suggests that the predicted target genes of differentially expressed miRNAs may be involved in the reproductive process. This preliminary study revealed that let-7f-5p, miR-99a-5p and miR-100-5p may be involved in the hypothalamic regulation of pregnancy cycle changes in goats. These data provide a basic reference for subsequent studies on the regulatory role of miRNAs in mammalian pregnancy.

A novel method of pellet calcification roasting-H2SO4 leaching was proposed to efficiently separate and extract vanadium (V) from vanadium-titanium (V-Ti) magnetite concentrates. The leaching rate of V is as high as 88.98%, while the leaching rate of impurity iron is only 1.79%. Moreover, the leached pellets can be used as raw materials for blast furnace ironmaking after secondary roasting. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (SEM-EDS) analyses showed that V3+ was oxidized to V5+ after roasting at 1200 °C, and V5+ was then leached by H2SO4. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses and single factor experiment revealed a minimal amount of dissolved Fe2O3 during H2SO4 leaching. Therefore, a high separation degree of V and iron (Fe) from V-Ti magnetite concentrate was achieved through H2SO4 leaching. Compared with the traditional roasting-leaching process, this process can achieve a high selectivity of V and Fe, and has excellent prospects for industrial production.

Background: Increased iron deposition in nigrosome as assessed by susceptibility-weighted imaging (SWI) is involved in the pathogenesis of Parkinson’s disease (PD). This study investigated the effects of antiparkinson drugs on iron deposition in the nigrosome of PD patients.Methods: Based on the retrospective analysis of clinical data, alterations in iron deposition in the substantia nigra were investigated in 51 PD patients across different types of therapies and in nine Parkinson-plus syndrome patients. The Movement Disorder Society revision of the Unified Parkinson’s Disease Rating Scale (MDS-UPDRS) Part Ⅲ/Ⅳ (UPDRS Ⅲ/Ⅳ) was utilized to evaluate motor function and complications. SWI (slice = 0.6 mm) was used to detect iron deposition in the nigrosome and substantia nigra. Nigrosome loss was scored on a 1-point nigrosome visibility scale. Visual assessment of dorsolateral nigral hyperintensity (DNH) was separately performed for each side of the nigrosome with SWI.Results: Increased UPDRS Ⅲ scores were correlated with low nigrosome scores based on correlation analysis at a disease duration of 6–12 months (r = −0.8420). The loss of the nigrosome on SWI was clearly inhibited in PD patients with a 3–5-year duration of administration of antiparkinson medications compared with no treatment. Decreased UPDRS Ⅲ scores and increased nigrosome scores were observed in the regular treatment of PD patients with a 6–7-year disease duration. For patients with Parkinson-plus syndromes, such as multiple system atrophy, iron accumulation was apparent in the corpus striatum and substantia nigra compared with that for patients with progressive supranuclear palsy.Conclusions: Early and regular treatment with antiparkinson drugs not only alleviates the chance of PD disability but also prevents the loss of DNH, namely, iron accumulation in the nigrosome.

Cyst nematodes are considered a dominant threat to yield for a wide range of major food crops. Current control strategies are mainly dependent on crop rotation and the use of resistant cultivars. Various crops exhibit single dominant resistance (R) genes that are able to activate effective host-specific resistance to certain cyst nematode species and/or populations. An example is the potato R gene Gpa2, which confers resistance against the potato cyst nematode (PCN), Globodera pallida population D383. Activation of Gpa2 results in a delayed resistance response, which is characterized by a layer of necrotic cells formed around the developing nematode feeding structure. However, knowledge about the Gpa2-induced defense pathways is still lacking. Here, we uncover the transcriptional changes and gene expression network induced upon Gpa2 activation in potato roots infected with G. pallida. To this end, in vitro-grown Gpa2-resistant potato roots were infected with the avirulent population D383 and virulent population Rookmaker. Infected root segments were harvested at 3 and 6 dpi and sent for RNA sequencing. Comparative transcriptomics revealed a total of 1,743 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) upon nematode infection, of which 559 DEGs were specifically regulated in response to D383 infection. D383-specific DEGs associated with Gpa2-mediated defense mainly relates to calcium-binding activity, salicylic acid (SA) biosynthesis, and systemic acquired resistance (SAR). These data reveal that cyst nematode resistance in potato roots depends on conserved downstream signaling pathways involved in plant immunity, which are also known to contribute to R genes-mediated resistance against other pathogens with different lifestyles.

Abstract Background Previous neuroimaging studies have extensively demonstrated many signs of functionally spontaneous local neural activity abnormalities in bipolar disorder (BD) patients using resting‐state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs‐fMRI). However, how to identify the changes of voxel‐wise whole‐brain functional connectivity pattern and its corresponding functional connectivity changes remain largely unclear in BD patients. The current study aimed to investigate the voxel‐wise changes of functional connectivity patterns in BD patients using publicly available data from the UCLA CNP LA5c Study. Methods A total of 45 BD patients and 115 healthy control subjects were finally included and whole‐brain functional connectivity homogeneity (FcHo) was calculated from their rs‐fMRI. Moreover, the alterations of corresponding functional connectivity were subsequently identified using seed‐based resting‐state functional connectivity analysis. Results Individuals with BD exhibited significantly lower FcHo values in the left middle temporal gyrus (MTG) when compared with controls. Functional connectivity findings further indicated decreased functional connectivities between left MTG and cluster 1 (left superior temporal gyrus, extend to middle temporal gyrus, rolandic operculum), cluster 2 (right postcentral, extend to right precentral) in BD patients. The mean FcHo values of left MTG were positively correlated with insomnia, middle scores and appetite increase scores. The mean functional connectivities of left MTG to cluster 1 were negatively correlated with grandiose delusions scores. While the functional connections between left MTG with cluster 2 were negatively correlated with delusions of reference and positively correlated with insomnia, middle scores in BD patients. Conclusions Our findings suggested that abnormal FcHo and functional connections in those areas of the brain involving DMN and SMN networks might play a crucial role in the neuropathology of BD.

The era of information and communication technology (ICT) has popularized adolescents' digital reading activities in their daily lives. Most prior studies focused on identifying significant factors that foster digital reading performance. Although educational quality is of great concern, it is crucial to consider the issue of educational equity in the digital world. Our study aims to unfold the mediating roles of ICT-related psychological needs between economic, social, and cultural status (ESCS) and digital reading performance. A multilevel mediation analysis was adopted for 36,490 students from six high-performing Asian regions participating in the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA). The results indicated that perceived ICT autonomy significantly mediated the relationship in most Asian regions, while perceived ICT competence yielded mixed roles. Interestingly, the suppression effects were detected between ESCS, ICT in social interaction, and digital reading. Our research findings offer fresh insights into narrowing the digital divide in the online reading environment for adolescents.

Abstract Background MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are involved in the oncogenesis, development and transformation of lung squamous cell carcinoma (LUSC). miR-665 is clinically significant and acts as a pivotal function in some cancers. Nevertheless, the effects and the potential mechanisms of miR-665 in human LUSC are still unknown. Methods To analyse the clinical significant of miR-665 in human LUSC, quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR) was use to measure miR-665 expression in LUSC specimen tissues and cell lines. Tripartite motif 8 (TRIM8) was verified a target of miR-665 by performing bioinformatic prediction and luciferase reporter assay. The expression levels of TRIM8 were examined through qRT-PCR and Western blotting in LUSC specimen tissues. CCK8 assay was fulfilled for analyzing the function in LUSC cell proliferation. Flow cytometry was used to detect cell and apoptosis. TRIM8 silencing and overexpression further verified the biological effects as those caused by miR-665. Results Here we reported that miR-665 expression was upregulated in LUSC specimen tissues and cell lines. High miR-665 levels were related to differentiation, tumor size and TNM stage. miR-665 mimics facilitated LUSC cell growth and cell cycle G1-S transition and repressed apoptosis. miR-665 inhibitor suppressed cell proliferation and G1-S transition and promoted apoptosis. miR-665 expression was negatively correlated with TRIM8 mRNA expression in LUSC. Luciferase reporter assay confirmed that TRIM8 was a direct target gene of miR-665. miR-665 mimics downregulated the TRIM8 levels, and miR-665 inhibitor upregulated the TRIM8 levels in LUSC cells. Particularly, silencing TRIM8 led to the similar effects of miR-665 mimics in LUSC cells. Overexpression of TRIM8 inhibited LUSC cell proliferation in vitro and in vivo. Furthermore, miR-665 promoted LUSC cell proliferation through facilitating the Wnt5a/β-catenin signaling pathway and restrained apoptosis via inhibiting Caspase-3 signaling pathway, whereas TRIM8 suppressed cell growth by repressing the Wnt5a/β-catenin signaling pathway and induced apoptosis through activating Caspase-3 signaling pathway. Conclusions The current study demonstrates that miR-665 facilitates LUSC cell proliferation and cell cycle transition by regulation of the Wnt5a/β-Catenin signaling pathway and represses cell apoptosis via modulation of Caspase-3 signaling pathway by directly targeting TRIM8. These findings suggest that miR-665 might be a potential new target for LUSC therapy.

Abstract Schizotypy, a subclinical group at risk for schizophrenia, has been found to show impairments in response inhibition. However, it remains unclear whether this impairment is accompanied by outright stopping (reactive inhibition) or preparation for stopping (proactive inhibition). We recruited 20 schizotypy and 24 non-schizotypy individuals to perform a modified stop-signal task with electroencephalographic (EEG) data recorded. This task consists of three conditions based on the probability of stop signal: 0% (no stop trials, only go trials), 17% (17% stop trials), and 33% (33% stop trials), the conditions were indicated by the colour of go stimuli. For proactive inhibition (go trials), individuals with schizotypy exhibited significantly lesser increase in go response time (RT) as the stop signal probability increasing compared to non-schizotypy individuals. Individuals with schizotypy also exhibited significantly increased N1 amplitude on all levels of stop signal probability and increased P3 amplitude in the 17% stop condition compared with non-schizotypy individuals. For reactive inhibition (stop trials), individuals with schizotypy exhibited significantly longer stop signal reaction time (SSRT) in both 17% and 33% stop conditions and smaller N2 amplitude on stop trials in the 17% stop condition than non-schizotypy individuals. These findings suggest that individuals with schizotypy were impaired in both proactive and reactive response inhibition at behavioural and neural levels.

Natural killer (NK) cells play key roles in eliminating pathogen-infected cells. Verbena officinalis (V. officinalis) has been used as a medical plant in traditional and modern medicine for its anti-tumor and anti-inflammatory activities, but its effects on immune responses remain largely elusive. This study aimed to investigate the potential of V. officinalis extract (VO extract) to regulate inflammation and NK cell functions. We examined the effects of VO extract on lung injury in a mouse model of influenza virus infection. We also investigated the impact of five bioactive components of VO extract on NK killing functions using primary human NK cells. Our results showed that oral administration of VO extract reduced lung injury, promoted the maturation and activation of NK cells in the lung, and decreased the levels of inflammatory cytokines (IL-6, TNF-α and IL-1β) in the serum. Among five bioactive components of VO extract, Verbenalin significantly enhanced NK killing efficiency in vitro, as determined by real-time killing assays based on plate-reader or high-content live-cell imaging in 3D using primary human NK cells. Further investigation showed that treatment of Verbenalin accelerated the killing process by reducing the contact time of NK cells with their target cells without affecting NK cell proliferation, expression of cytotoxic proteins, or lytic granule degranulation. Together, our findings suggest that VO extract has a satisfactory anti-inflammatory effect against viral infection in vivo, and regulates the activation, maturation, and killing functions of NK cells. Verbenalin from V. officinalis enhances NK killing efficiency, suggesting its potential as a promising therapeutic to fight viral infection.

Abstract Background Soil salinization is a major threat to wheat production. It is essential to understand the genetic basis of salt tolerance for breeding and selecting new salt-tolerant cultivars that have the potential to increase wheat yield. Result In this study, a panel of 191 wheat accessions was subjected to genome wide association study (GWAS) to identify SNP markers linked with adult-stage characters. The population was genotyped by Wheat660K SNP array and eight phenotype traits were investigated under low and high salinity environments for three consecutive years. A total of 389 SNPs representing 11 QTLs were significantly associated with plant height, spike number, spike length, grain number, thousand kernels weight, yield and biological mass under different salt treatments, with the phenotypic explanation rate (R 2) ranging from 9.14 to 50.45%. Of these, repetitive and pleiotropic loci on chromosomes 4A, 5A, 5B and 7A were significantly linked to yield and yield related traits such as thousand kernels weight, spike number, spike length, grain number and so on under low salinity conditions. Spike length-related loci were mainly located on chromosomes 1B, 3B, 5B and 7A under different salt treatments. Two loci on chromosome 4D and 5A were related with plant height in low and high salinity environment, respectively. Three salt-tolerant related loci were confirmed to be important in two bi-parental populations. Distribution of favorable haplotypes indicated that superior haplotypes of pleiotropic loci on group-5 chromosomes were strongly selected and had potential for increasing wheat salt tolerance. A total of 14 KASP markers were developed for nine loci associating with yield and related traits to improve the selection efficiency of wheat salt-tolerance breeding. Conclusion Utilizing a Wheat660K SNPs chip, QTLs for yield and its related traits were detected under salt treatment in a natural wheat population. Important salt-tolerant related loci were validated in RIL and DH populations. This study provided reliable molecular markers that could be crucial for marker-assisted selection in wheat salt tolerance breeding programs.

Skeletal muscle accounts for about 40% of mammalian body weight, the development of which is a dynamic, complex and precisely regulated process that is critical for meat production. We here described the transcriptome expression profile in 21 goat samples collected at 7 growth stages from fetus to kid, including fetal 45 (F45), 65 (F65), 90 (F90), 120 (F120), and 135 (F135) days, and birth 1 (B1) day and 90 (B90) days kids. Paraffin sections combined with RNA-seq data of the 7 stages divided the transcriptomic functions of skeletal muscle into 4 states: before F90, F120, F135 and B1, and B90. And the dynamic expression of all 4 793 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) was identified. Furthermore, DEGs were clustered by weighted gene correlation network analysis into 4 modules (turquoise, grey, blue and brown) that corresponded to these 4 states. Functional and pathway analysis indicated that the active genes in the stages before F90 (turquoise) were closely related to skeletal muscle proliferation. The DEGs in the F120-related module (grey) were found to participate in the regulation of skeletal muscle structure and skeletal muscle development by regulating tRNA. The brown module (F135 and B1) regulated fatty acid biological processes to maintain the normal development of muscle cells. The DEGs of B90 high correlation module (blue) were involved the strengthening and power of skeletal muscle through the regulation of actin filaments and tropomyosin. Our current data thus revealed the internal functional conversion of the goat skeletal muscle in the growth from fetus to kid. The results provided a theoretical basis for analyzing the involvement of mRNA in skeletal muscle development.

BackgroundFacial seborrheic dermatitis (FSD), also called facial seborrheic eczema, is a common disease affecting both male and female patients worldwide. Tanshinone is the main bioactive component extracted from the Traditional Chinese Medicine Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge, which is widely used in treating skin inflammatory diseases. It is necessary to evaluate the clinical evidence for tanshinone capsule treatment of FSD. This study aimed to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of tanshinone capsules combined with prednisone in the treatment of facial seborrheic dermatitis and to provide evidence for clinical practice.MethodsStudies were searched in PubMed, the Cochrane Library, the Chinese Biomedical Literature Database, the China National Knowledge Infrastructure, the Chinese Scientific Journal Database, and WanFang Database before October 2021. We also searched for randomized controlled clinical trials (RCT) of tanshinone capsules combined with prednisone on facial seborrheic dermatitis. The meta-analysis was conducted according to the guidelines of the Cochrane Handbook. Two reviewers regulated the research selection, data extraction, and risk of bias assessment, respectively, and a third reviewer was used for consulting when necessary. Review Manager Software 5.3 was used for meta-analysis.ResultsA total of 10 RCTs with 916 participants were included. Nine studies reported total effectiveness, five studies reported symptom score, seven studies reported adverse events, and four studies reported recurrence rate. The duration of treatment was 4 to 8 weeks. Combination therapy showed better clinical effects compared to the prednisone (OR: 5.82; 95% CI: 3.53, 9.59; p < 0.00001). Combination therapy could repair skin lesions (MD: −0.40; 95% CI: −0.51, −0.30; p < 0.00001), reduce skin erythema (MD: −0.58, 95% CI: −0.67, −0.49; p < 0.00001), relieve skin itch (MD: −0.70; 95% CI −0.77, −0.63; p < 0.00001), and desquamation score (MD: −0.64; 95% CI: −0.71, −0.56; p < 0.00001). Furthermore, combination therapy could reduce adverse events (OR: 0.46; 95% CI: 0.26, 0.84; p = 0.01) and control recurrence rate (OR: 0.22; 95% CI: 0.13, 0.36; p < 0.00001).ConclusionsCompared with prednisone, tanshinone capsules combined with prednisone may be effective in the treatment of facial seborrheic dermatitis. However, due to the high risk and ambiguity of bias in the included trials, the conclusion of this study must be interpreted carefully.

BackgroundTricuspid regurgitation after left-sided valve surgery was associated with terrible outcomes and high perioperative mortality for surgical treatment. In current years, minimally invasive isolated tricuspid valve repair is increasingly performed in our institution to address tricuspid regurgitation.MethodsThirty-seven consecutive patients with previous left-sided valve surgery underwent minimally invasive isolated tricuspid valve repair in our institution between November 2017 and December 2020. Twenty-nine patients(78.4%) were women and the mean age of patients was 58.4 ± 8.5 years. Follow-up was 100% complete with a mean follow-up time of 17.2 ± 9.5 months.ResultsBoth the in-hospital and 30-day mortalities were 2.7%. The overall NYHA class had improved significantly during the follow-up (p < 0.001). The grade of TR had decreased before discharge (p < 0.001) and during the follow-up (p < 0.001) compared with the preoperative level although severe TR was recurrent in one patient.ConclusionsMinimally invasive isolated tricuspid valve repair has acceptable early and midterm outcomes, may be the preferred surgical option to address tricuspid regurgitation after previous left-sided valve surgery when it is feasible.

Singapore grouper iridovirus (SGIV), a member of the Iridoviridae family, is an important marine cultured fish pathogen worldwide. Our previous studies have demonstrated that lipid metabolism was essential for SGIV entry and replication, but the roles of glucose metabolism during SGIV infection still remains largely unknown. In this study, we found that the transcription levels of key enzymes involved in glycolysis were regulated in varying degrees during SGIV infection based on the transcriptomic analysis. Quantitative PCR and western blot analysis also indicated that the expression of both glucose transporters (GLUT1 and GLUT2) and the enzymes of glucose metabolism (hexokinase 2, HK2 and pyruvate dehydrogenase complex, PDHX) were upregulated during SGIV infection in vivo or in vitro, suggesting that glycolysis might be involved in SGIV infection. Exogenous glucose supplementation promoted the expression of viral genes and infectious virion production, while glutamine had no effect on SGIV infection, indicating that glucose was required for SGIV replication. Consistently, pharmacological inhibition of glycolysis dramatically reduced the protein synthesis of SGIV major capsid protein (MCP) and infectious virion production, and promotion of glycolysis significantly increased SGIV infection. Furthermore, knockdown of HK2, PDHX, or GLUT1 by siRNA decreased the transcription and protein synthesis of SGIV MCP and suppressed viral replication, indicating that those enzymes exerted essential roles in SGIV replication. In addition, inhibition of mTOR activity in SGIV-infected cells effectively reduced the expression of glycolysis key enzymes, including HK2, PDHX, GLUT1, and GLUT2, and finally inhibited SGIV replication, suggesting that mTOR was involved in SGIV-induced glycolysis. Thus, our results not only provided new insights into the mechanism of how SGIV infection affects host cell glycolysis, but also contributed to further understanding of the iridovirus pathogenesis.

To accelerate the exploitation and use of marginal soils and develop salt-tolerant forage germplasm suitable for the coastal regions of China, seven lines of decaploid tall wheatgrass [Thinopyrum ponticum (Podp.) Barkworth and D. R. Dewey, 2n = 10x = 70] were transplanted under low (.3%) and high (.5%) salt conditions for a comprehensive analysis at the adult-plant stage. Differences were observed among these materials, especially in terms of grass yield, agronomic characteristics, and physiological and biochemical indices. Line C2 grew best with the highest shoot total fresh and dry weights under all conditions except for the milk-ripe stage in Dongying in 2019. The total membership value of C2 also reflected its excellent performance after transplanting. As superior germplasm, its relatively high antioxidant enzyme activities and chlorophyll a/b ratio suggested C2 may maintain normal metabolic and physiological functions under saline conditions. Furthermore, decaploid tall wheatgrass as a forage grass species has a high nutritive value beneficial for animal husbandry. Accordingly, line C2 may be used as excellent germplasm to develop salt-tolerant cultivars in the Circum-Bohai sea.

Weak layer interface is a non-negligible issue in the domain of cement additive manufacturing, which results in lacking integrity, mechanical inferiority and deteriorated durability. In order to overcome these disadvantages, a silicate-based interface strengthening agent (ISA) is herein designed to penetrate into layer interface and generate a dense precipitation phase (hydrated calcium silicate gel) from the reaction with portlandite, a weak phase with lower mechanical properties. Through this enhancing strategy, both horizontal and vertical layer interface exhibit remarkable bonding strength higher than that of matrix material, turning the intrinsic weak interface to a “robust interface”. The strengthening mechanism is attributed to the modification of interfacial hydration products and the densification of multi-scaled pore structure at interface region, which is demonstrated via synthetical characterizations along with molecular dynamics simulations. This interface strengthening method based on silicate penetration and precipitation provides a convenient and effective approach to preparing robust layer interface stronger than its cement matrix.

Herpes simplex keratitis (HSK) is the most common cause of corneal blindness in developed nations, caused by primary or recurrent herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1) infection of the cornea. Latent infection of HSV-1, especially in the trigeminal ganglion (TG), causes recurrence of HSV-1 infection. As antiviral treatment is not effective on latent HSV-1, to test the possibility of inhibiting HSV-1 by SpCas9 (Streptococcus pyogenes Cas9) or SaCas9 (Staphylococcus aureus Cas9), ICP0 and ICP4, two important genes required for HSV-1 replication and reactivation, were chosen as targets. In Vero cells, SpCas9 and SaCas9 targeting ICP0 or ICP4 can effectively inhibit the proliferation of HSV-1 without affecting cell viability. No significant guide RNA (gRNA)-dependent off-targets were observed in the human genome by digenome sequencing and deep sequencing verification. Adeno-associated virus 1 (AAV1)-mediated delivery of SaCas9 inhibits HSV-1 replication by targeting ICP4 in mouse primary TG neuronal cells. SpCas9 and SaCas9 are able to inhibit HSV-1 infection in Vero cells and mouse TG neuronal cultures with high efficiency and good biosafety. AAV1-mediated delivery of SaCas9 shows great potential in treating HSK and inhibiting HSV-1 in TG neurons. Further investigations may be needed to test the inhibition of latent infections, which may result in the development of novel methods for treating viral diseases.

Abstract Background Circular RNA (circRNA) is produced during the splicing of mRNA (in addition to linear splicing) and is part of the gene regulatory network. The temporal expression patterns the different developmental stages were inseparable from these molecules’ function. Results Skeletal muscles of Anhui white goat (AWG) across seven fetal to postnatal development stages were sequenced and 21 RNA sequencing libraries were constructed. We thereby identified 9090 circRNAs and analyzed their molecular properties, temporal expression patterns, and potential functions at the different stages. CircRNAs showed complexities and diversity of formation as the same host gene produces multiple isoforms of these nucleic acids with different expression profiles. Biostatistics is an integral part of any public health studentʼs curriculum. Most master-level public health students, lacking undergraduate training in calculus-centered mathematics, are often regarded as unprepared for conceptual knowledge, and hence their biostatistics education is dominated by procedural skills. Quoting classroom-tested examples, this article argues for the feasibility of teaching conceptual knowledge using a first principle-guided, computation-driven hands-on approach. Examples are drawn from an online course in categorical data analysis, and it is shown that making the likelihood function comprehensible is key to imparting successfully a majority of the important abstract concepts encountered in an introductory course in categorical data analysis. Data from end-of-semester course surveys were found to support the proposition that master-level public health students are receptive to conceptual knowledge of biostatistics and are able to appreciate the beauty of statistical reasoning.

Diabetes mellituse has been one of the major diseases in the world due to the high percentage of diabetics in the global population and the increasing growth rate of its onset. Identifying individual physiological characteristics, e.g., insulin sensitivity and glucose effectiveness and others, is extremely important in developing effective drugs and investigating genetic pathways causing the defects in these physiological responses. Intravenous glucose tolerance test (IVGTT) is such a protocol to determine an individual insulin sensitivity and glucose effectiveness indices. In this paper, we propose a stochastic delay differential equation model for the IVGTT protocol attempting to develop a method to increase the accuracy of parameter estimation. We first study the existence and uniqueness of the global positive solution and its asymptotic behavior of the stochastic path close to the steady state of the corresponding deterministic model. Then we develop a maximum likelihood estimation method to estimate the parameters involved in the proposed model. Our simulation studies numerically confirm our theoretical findings and demonstrate that the proposed model with estimated parameters can improve the fitness of clinical data.

In order to determine the effect of graphene oxide (GO) on the physical property and microstructure of the asphalt binder, GO material was selected to prepare GO-modified asphalt for analysis. Firstly, the surface/interface characterization and chemical analysis were performed on GO and GO-modified asphalt. The physical properties of GO-modified asphalt were investigated through softening point, ductility, and penetration tests. The impact of GO material on the rheological behavior of asphalt was characterized by Brookfield viscosity and dynamic shear rheological tests (DSR). Furthermore, the typical microstructure of GO inside asphalt material was also identified and analyzed through a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM). The results showed that the modifying effect of GO materials could promote the fusion between asphalt and GO. A modified GO could improve the high temperature of asphalt, but it would degrade the low temperature property of the asphalt binder. A modified GO could be integrated with asphalt and achieve a modifying effect on the asphalt material. This study would provide references for the application of graphene oxide in asphalt pavement materials.

This paper presents the detection of a significant velocity offset between the emission and absorption lines of a dual core system in SDSS J155708.82+273518.74 (=SDSS J1557). The photometric image of SDSS J1557 exhibits two clear cores with a projected separation of ∼2.″2 (4.9 kpc) determined by GALFIT. Based on the applications of the commonly accepted pPXF code with 636 theoretical SSP templates, the host galaxy contribution can be well determined. Then, the emission-line features of SDSS J1557 can be well measured after subtraction of the host starlight. It is found that the velocity offset of emission lines with respect to absorption lines reaches 458 ± 13 km s ^−1 . According to a Baldwin–Phillips–Terlevich diagram, SDSS J1557 is a composite galaxy. In addition, SDSS J1557 can well fit the M _BH − σ _* relation of bulges, and a galaxy merger would not change this relation. Two reasonable models (an AGN-driven outflow versus a dual core system) are discussed to explain this velocity offset. The model of an AGN-driven outflow fails to interpret the systematic redshift of the emission lines and similar velocity offsets for the various emission lines of SDSS J1557. Instead, the significant velocity offset between the emission and absorption lines might be an effective indicator of a dual core system.

Tall wheatgrass (Elytrigia elongata) has the potential to be utilized on marginal land, such as coastal saline-alkaline soils, to meet rising ruminant feed demand. However, the salinity threshold for cultivation of tall wheatgrass remains unclear, which restricts its extensive application. Here, a tall wheatgrass line, Zhongyan 1, was grown in saline-alkaline soils in the Yellow River Delta region to determine its salinity threshold. The results showed that the soil salinity of AM = 1.23, measured with a PNT3000 activity meter, led to only 5% dead plants of tall wheatgrass. Four grades of seedling plants were classified according to the morphological response of Zhongyan 1 to saline soils. The soil salinity declined while the survival rate and forage yield increased from grade 1 to grade 4 plants. Plant height and dry matter yield were negatively related to soil salinity. When the salinity in the soil depth of 0–10 cm was over 1%, the survival rate of tall wheatgrass declined dramatically with the increase in soil salinity. Under saline-alkaline stress, the plant height during 12–31 May was positively related to forage yield, which can be used as an indicator of productivity. The tall type (70–120 cm) produced 5627.2 kg ha−1 of dry matter, which was 3.32 times that of the dwarf type (20–69 cm). The forage yield of tall wheatgrass in saline-alkaline land was largely affected by the proportion of highly saline soil. Collectively, the soil salinity of 1% at a depth of 0–10 cm and the AM values of 1.23 measured with a PNT3000 activity meter can be used as the salinity threshold for cultivation of tall wheatgrass in coastal saline-alkaline land.

Abstract Background Osteoarthritis (OA) is a degenerative joint disease characterized by articular cartilage degradation and joint inflammation, in which growth factors are significantly involved. The extracellular signal-regulated p38 MAPK pathways play important roles in the regulation of osteogenic and chondrogenic differentiation in bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs). However, the exact mechanism remains unclear. Methods In this study, the chondrogenic differentiation of human BMSCs was initiated in micromass culture in the presence of TGF-β1 for 14 days. Quantitative RT-PCR and Western blot were performed to detect the transfection effect of shRNA-p38 interfering plasmid in BMSCs. The protein expressions of p/t-p38, SOX9, collagen II, Aggrecan, p/t-Smad1, and p/t-Smad4, as well as the kinase activities of p38/ERK/JNK pathway, were investigated using Western blot analysis. Additionally, the level of chondroitin sulfate and glycosaminoglycans (GAG) expression were measured by Alcian blue staining and GAG assay kit via qualitative and quantitative methods, respectively. Results The results demonstrated that p38 pathway was activated in the chondrogenic differentiation of BMSCs induced by TGF-β1. Cartilage-specific genes and chondrogenic regulators, such as SOX9, collagen II, Aggrecan, and GAG, were upregulated by TGF-β1, which could be reversed by predisposed with shRNA-p38 interfering plasmid and p38-MAPK inhibitors (SB203580). Moreover, the activation of p38/ERK/JNK pathways in the presence of TGF-β1 was suppressed by shRNA-p38 and SB203580 treatment. Conclusion Collectively, the activation of p38/ERK/JNK/Smad pathways plays a facilitated role in the chondrogenic differentiation induced by TGF-β1. After suppressing the p38 pathway, the chondrogenesis can be inhibited, which can be used to guide the treatment of osteoarthritis.

Halobenzoquinones (HBQs) are emerging and widespread disinfection byproducts (DBPs), but their toxicological mechanisms to aquatic organisms remain elusive. Herein, we evaluated oxidative stress, cardiac toxicity, and cerebral toxicity after 2, 6-dichloro-1, 4-benzoquinone (2,6-DCBQ) exposure in zebrafish. Adult zebrafish were respectively exposed to 0.25, 0.5, and 1 μM 2,6-DCBQ for 96 h. The mortality rate of 2,6-DCBQ (1 μM) was 10%, while the LC50 value was 1.532 μM. Besides, 2,6-DCBQ exposure caused irregularity and elimination of myocardial fiber in the heart, and the pyknosis of nuclears and the agglutination of chromatin in the brain. We measured the 2,6-DCBQ-induced oxidative stresses in the heart and brain. Additionally, the glutathione (GSH) content, superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, catalase (CAT) activity, and total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC) were significantly inhibited. To better understand the potential toxicity of 2,6-DCBQ, transcriptomic analysis was performed in the control and 1 μM group after 96 h exposure. As a result, 545 and 1228 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were detected in the heart and brain, respectively. GO analysis revealed that these DEGs were primarily enriched in blood vessel development, vasculature development, and oxidoreductase activity in the heart; response to stimulus, nervous system development, and oxidoreductase activity in the brain. KEGG enrichment analysis indicated that the DEGs were mainly enriched in VEGF signaling pathway and vascular smooth muscle contraction pathway in the heart; neuroactive ligand-receptor interaction, and NOD-like receptor signaling pathway in the brain. These findings exposed the underlying toxicity mechanism of 2,6-DCBQ exposure on zebrafish cardiovascular and brain systems.

Background: There is a large amount of evidence that anti-angiogenic drugs are effective safe. However, few studies have evaluated the specific effects of anti-angiogenic drugs on myocardial enzyme injury biomarkers: aspartate aminotransferase (AST), lactic dehydrogenase (LDH), creatine kinase (CK) and creatine kinase isoenzyme (CK-MB). The purpose of our study was to determine whether anti-angiogenic drugs serum AST, LDH, CK, and CK-MB activities of cancer patients treated with anti-angiogenic drugs.Methods: This study retrospectively analyzed 81 cancer patients. Patients who had used anti-angiogenic drugs were selected. Serum AST, LDH, CK, and CK-MB activities were measured before and after treatment with anti-angiogenic drugs for 3 weeks.Results: A total of 16 cancer types were analyzed. The distribution of the cancer types in the patients was mainly concentrated in lung, gastric, and colorectal cancers. The anti-angiogenic treatment markedly increased AST, LDH, CK, and CK-MB activities by 32.51, 7.29, 31.25, and 55.56%, respectively in serum.Conclusions: Our findings suggest that patients, who had used anti-angiogenic drugs were likely to have elevated AST, LDH, and CK, indicators of myocardial muscle injury. Use of anti-angiogenic drugs should not be assumed to be completely safe and without any cardiovascular risks.

The mutant distribution that accommodates both fitness and plating efficiency is an important class of the Luria–Delbrück distribution. Practical algorithms for computing this distribution do not coincide with the theoretically most elegant ones, as existing generic methods often either produce unreliable results or freeze the computational process altogether when employed to solve real-world research problems. Exploiting properties of the hypergeometric function, this paper offers an algorithm that considerably expands the scope of application of this important class of the Luria–Delbrück distribution. An integration method is also devised to complement the novel algorithm. Asymptotic properties of the mutant probability are derived to help gauge the new algorithm. An illustrative example and simulation results provide further guidelines on the use of the new algorithm.

Functional aerogels composed of regenerated cellulose and tungsten oxide were fabricated by implanting tungsten-oxide nanodots into regenerated cellulose fiber. This superfast photochromic property benefitted from the small size and even distribution of tungsten oxide, which was caused by the confinement effect of the regenerated cellulose fiber. The composite was characterized using XRD and TEM to illustrate the successful loading of tungsten oxide. The composite turned from pale white to bright blue under ambient solar irradiation in five seconds. The evidence of solar absorption and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) demonstrated the fast photochromic nature of the composite and its mechanism. Furthermore, carbon fiber filled with preferential growth tungsten-oxide nanorods was obtained by annealing the photochromic composite in a N2 atmosphere. This annealed product exhibited good absorption across the whole solar spectrum and revealed an excellent photothermal conversion performance. The water evaporation rate reached 1.75 kg m−2 h−1 under one sun illumination, which is 4.4 times higher than that of pure water. The photothermal conversion efficiency was 85%, which shows its potential application prospects in seawater desalination.

Electronic properties of superatomic crystals have not been sufficiently explored due to the versatility of their building units; moreover, their interunit couplings are even poorly understood. Here, we present a joint experiment-theory investigation of a rationally designed layered superatomic crystal of Au_{6}Te_{12}Se_{8} (ATS) cubes stacked by noncovalent intercube quasibonds. We find a sequential-emerged anisotropic triple-cube charge density wave (TCCDW) and polarized metallic states below 120 K, as revealed via scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, transport measurement, Raman spectra, and density-functional theory. The polarized states are locked in an antiparallel configuration, which is required for maintaining the inversion symmetry of the center cube in the TCCDW. The antipolar metallic states are thus interweaved by the CDW and the polarized metallic states, and primarily ascribed to electronic effects via theoretical calculations. This work not only demonstrates a microscopic picture of the interweaved CDW and polarized charge orders in the superatomic crystal of ATS, but also sheds light on expanding the existing category of quantum materials to noncovalent solids.

BackgroundWe aimed at determining the influence of old age on lymph node metastasis (LNM) and prognosis in T1 colorectal cancer (CRC).MethodsWe collected data from eligible patients in Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database between 2004 and 2015. Independent predictors of LNM were identified by logistic regression analysis. Cox regression analysis, propensity score-matched analysis, and competing risks analysis were used to analyze the associations between old age and lymph node (LN) status and to validate the prognostic value of old age on cancer-specific survival (CSS).ResultsIn total, 10,092 patients were identified. Among them, 6,423 patients (63.6%) had greater than or equal to 12 examined lymph nodes (LNE ≥12), and 5,777 patients (57.7%) were 65 years or older. BackgroundAlmost 50% of the adults in the United States have hypertension. Although clinical trials indicate that home blood pressure monitoring can be effective in managing hypertension, the reported results might not materialize in practice because of patient adherence problems. ObjectiveThe aims of this study are to characterize the adherence of Medicaid patients with hypertension to daily telemonitoring, identify the impacts of adherence reminder calls, and investigate associations with blood pressure control. MethodsThis study targeted Medicaid patients with hypertension from the state of Texas. A total of 180 days of blood pressure and pulse data in 2016-2018 from a telemonitoring company were analyzed for mean transmission rate and mean blood pressure change. The first 30 days of data were excluded because of startup effects. The protocols required the patients to transmit readings by a specified time daily. Patients not transmitting their readings received an adherence reminder call to troubleshoot problems and encourage transmission. The patients were classified into adherent and nonadherent cohorts; adherent patients were those who transmitted data on at least 80% of the days. ResultsThe mean patient age was 73.2 (SD 11.7) years. Of the 823 patients, 536 (65.1%) were women, and 660 (80.2%) were urban residents. The adherent cohort (475/823, 57.7%) had mean transmission rates of 74.9% before the adherence reminder call and 91.3% after the call, whereas the nonadherent cohort (348/823, 42.3%) had mean transmission rates of 39% and 58% before and after the call, respectively. From month 1 to month 5, the transmission rates dropped by 1.9% and 10.2% for the adherent and nonadherent cohorts, respectively. Chronic inflammation in response to persistent exogenous stimuli or damage results in liver fibrosis, which subsequently progresses into malignant liver diseases with high morbidity and mortality. Ferulic acid (FA) is a phenolic acid widely isolated from abundant plants and exhibits multiple biological activities including anti-oxidant, anti-inflammation and enhancement of immune responses. Adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK) functions as a critical energy sensor and is regulated through the phosphorylation of liver kinases like LKB1 or dephosphorylation by protein tyrosine phosphatases (PTPs). However, the role of FA in carbon tetrachloride (CCl4)-induced chronic inflammation and liver fibrosis and AMPK activation has not been elucidated. Here we reported that FA ameliorated CCl4-induced inflammation and fibrotic liver damage in mice as indicated by reduced levels of serum liver function enzyme activities and decreased expression of genes and proteins associated with fibrogenesis. Additionally, FA inhibited hepatic oxidative stress, macrophage activation and HSC activation via AMPK phosphorylation in different liver cells. Mechanically, without the participation of LKB1, FA-induced anti-inflammatory and anti-fibrotic effects were abrogated by a specific AMPK inhibitor, compound C. Combining with the results of molecular docking, surface plasmon resonance and co-immunoprecipitation assays, we further demonstrated that FA directly bound to and inhibited PTP1B, an enzyme responsible for dephosphorylating key protein kinases, and eventually leading to the phosphorylation of AMPK. In summary, our results indicated that FA alleviated oxidative stress, hepatic inflammation and fibrotic response in livers through PTP1B-AMPK signaling pathways. Taken together, we provide novel insights into the potential of FA as a natural product-derived therapeutic agent for the treatment of fibrotic liver injury.

Despite encouraging progresses in the development of novel therapies, cancer remains the dominant cause of disease-related mortality and has become a leading economic and healthcare burden worldwide. Scutellariae radix (SR, Huangqin in Chinese) is a common herb used in traditional Chinese medicine, with a long history in treating a series of symptoms resulting from cancer, like dysregulated immune response and metabolic abnormalities. As major bioactive ingredients extracted from SR, flavonoids, including baicalein, wogonin, along with their glycosides (baicalin and wogonoside), represent promising pharmacological and anti-tumor activities and deserve extensive research attention. Emerging evidence has made great strides in elucidating the multi-targeting therapeutic mechanisms and key signaling pathways underlying the efficacious potential of flavonoids derived from SR in the field of cancer treatment. In this current review, we aim to summarize the pharmacological actions of flavonoids against various cancers in vivo and in vitro. Moreover, we also make a brief summarization of the endeavor in developing a drug delivery system or structural modification to enhance the bioavailability and biological activities of flavonoid monomers. Taken together, flavonoid components in SR have great potential to be developed as adjuvant or even primary therapies for the clinical management of cancers and have a promising prospect.

BackgroundReaping the benefits from massive volumes of data collected in all sectors to improve population health, inform personalized medicine, and transform biomedical research requires the delicate balance between the benefits and risks of using individual-level data. There is a patchwork of US data protection laws that vary depending on the type of data, who is using it, and their intended purpose. Differences in these laws challenge big data projects using data from different sources. The decisions to permit or restrict data uses are determined by elected officials; therefore, constituent input is critical to finding the right balance between individual privacy and public benefits. ObjectiveThis study explores the US public’s preferences for using identifiable data for different purposes without their consent. MethodsWe measured data use preferences of a nationally representative sample of 504 US adults by conducting a web-based survey in February 2020. The survey used a choice-based conjoint analysis. We selected choice-based conjoint attributes and levels based on 5 US data protection laws (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, Privacy Act of 1974, Federal Trade Commission Act, and the Common Rule). There were 72 different combinations of attribute levels, representing different data use scenarios. Participants were given 12 pairs of data use scenarios and were asked to choose the scenario they were the most comfortable with. We then simulated the population preferences by using the hierarchical Bayes regression model using the ChoiceModelR package in R. ResultsParticipants strongly preferred data reuse for public health and research than for profit-driven, marketing, or crime-detection activities. Participants also strongly preferred data use by universities or nonprofit organizations over data use by businesses and governments. Participants were fairly indifferent about the different types of data used (health, education, government, or economic data). ConclusionsOur results show a notable incongruence between public preferences and current US data protection laws. Our findings appear to show that the US public favors data uses promoting social benefits over those promoting individual or organizational interests. This study provides strong support for continued efforts to provide safe access to useful data sets for research and public health. Policy makers should consider more robust public health and research data use exceptions to align laws with public preferences. In addition, policy makers who revise laws to enable data use for research and public health should consider more comprehensive protection mechanisms, including transparent use of data and accountability.

A sequence of (La1-xHox)3NbO7 solid solutions were fabricated in this work, which were studied as candidate for thermal insulation materials. The lattices were identified via XRD, when SEM and EDS were used to characterize the microstructures and element distributions. The results showed that the highest modulus, hardness, and toughness of (La1-xHox)3NbO7 were 196 GPa, 9.2 GPa, and 1.6 MPa m1/2, respectively, and they accorded with the mechanical property requirements. Also, a low thermal conductivity (1.06 W m−1 K−1) and high thermal expansion coefficients (TECs: 11.3 × 10−6 K−1) were simultaneously realized in (La3/6Ho3/6)3NbO7, at high temperatures. No phase transition was detected up to 1,200°C, which proved their good high-temperature lattice stability. The intense anharmonic lattice vibrations might contribute to the outstanding thermal properties of (La1-xHox)3NbO7 ceramics. The suitable modulus, high hardness, low thermal conductivity, and high TECs of (La1-xHox)3NbO7 solid solutions proclaimed that they were exceptional thermal insulation ceramics.

Strong links between hearing and cognitive function have been confirmed by a growing number of cross-sectional and longitudinal studies. Seniors with age-related hearing loss (ARHL) have a significantly higher cognitive impairment incidence than those with normal hearing. The correlation mechanism between ARHL and cognitive decline is not fully elucidated to date. However, auditory intervention for patients with ARHL may reduce the risk of cognitive decline, as early cognitive screening may improve related treatment strategies. Currently, clinical audiology examinations rarely include cognitive screening tests, partly due to the lack of objective quantitative indicators with high sensitivity and specificity. Questionnaires are currently widely used as a cognitive screening tool, but the subject’s performance may be negatively affected by hearing loss. Numerous electroencephalogram (EEG) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies analyzed brain structure and function changes in patients with ARHL. These objective electrophysiological tools can be employed to reveal the association mechanism between auditory and cognitive functions, which may also find biological markers to be more extensively applied in assessing the progression towards cognitive decline and observing the effects of rehabilitation training for patients with ARHL. In this study, we reviewed clinical manifestations, pathological changes, and causes of ARHL and discussed their cognitive function effects. Specifically, we focused on current cognitive screening tools and assessment methods and analyzed their limitations and potential integration.

Pregnancy is strictly regulated by neuronal and hormonal factors with an essential role being played by the pituitary gland. We screened for differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in the pituitary that function in goat gestational development. Pregnant (AWGp) and non-pregnant Anhui white goats (AWGn) were analysed by deep-sequencing technology. A total of 12 774 092 and 13 872 327 clear reads were obtained in the AWGp and AWGn libraries, respectively. A total of 2593 genes were labelled as significantly differentially expressed in AWGp compared to AWGn, including 2158 upregulated genes and 435 downregulated genes. These genes included follicle stimulating hormone beta (FSHB) and luteinizing hormone beta (LHB), which showed an involvement in reproductive regulation and downregulation (AWGp vs AWGn). Quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR) results validated the DEG data. Subsequent gene ontology analysis indicated that a large number of these DEGs function in cellular processes, cell structures, and cell binding. The DEGs were also found by Kyoto Gene and Genomic Encyclopaedia analysis to be significantly enriched in 54 pathways, including the GnRH and TGF-beta signalling pathways that affect cell proliferation and hormone secretion. These data also identify genes that may play a role in pregnancy and reproduction in the goat and thus provide avenues for future research.

Xiaoyan 60 (XY60) is a new wheat variety bred in the laboratory of Zhensheng Li. After salt treatment, seedlings of XY60 maintain green leaves and produce longer roots than the high yielding cultivar Zhongmai 175 (ZM175). To explain these different phenotypes we carried out an RNA-Seq analysis using 12 samples from three tissues of both varieties subjected to salt and control treatments. By comparing data from the salt treated plants with the control, 703, 979, and 1197 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were detected in new leaves, old leaves, and roots of XY60, respectively. The corresponding numbers for ZM175 were 613, 1401, and 1301. The most significantly enriched Gene Ontology (GO) terms and KEGG pathways were associated with polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) metabolism in both new and old leaves from XY60. They were associated with photosynthesis and energy metabolism in ZM175. The most significantly enriched KEGG pathway in roots of both varieties was “glucosinolate biosynthesis”. In addition, jasmonic acid (JA) concentration in XY60 was higher than in ZM175, although it increased significantly in both varieties following salt treatment. Trends in relative expression levels of AOS, MYC2, and JAZ revealed by qRT-PCR were concordant with those from RNA-Seq. Our results suggest that PUFAs may contribute to salt tolerance in common wheat by enhancing the photosynthetic system and JA-related pathways. Abstract. The cochlea plays an important role in the mammalian auditory system. Sound-induced cell motion in the cochlea is transformed into electrical signals that are then sent to primary auditory neurons. The most significant feature of the cochlea is the active and nonlinear amplification of faint sounds. This active process cannot be explained via a simple hydromechanical representation of the cochlea, that is, a macromechanic explanation. Although the mechanisms of this amplification are not well understood, cochlear micromechanical behavior is thought to play a significant role. The measurement of in vivo cochlea micromechanical responses is challenging and restricted by technical limitations. Modeling the micromechanics of the cochlea, however, can facilitate the interpretation of experimental observations. In this paper, we reviewed studies in which researchers modeled the cochlear micromechanics, and we discussed various modeling hypotheses, outcomes, and expectations.
