An efficient and convenient uranyl-catalyzed reductive hydrosilylation reaction of para-quinone methides (p-QMs) was developed by employing silane as the reductant. The hydrosilylation procedure using the UO2(NO3)2·6H2O/Et3SiH catalytic system proceeded smoothly and provided an expedient method for the construction of various diarylmethane derivatives in one step with good to excellent yields.

Recently, the observation of the first axially chiral borospherenes (B39−) enriched the members of the boron cluster family, and opened the door to axially chiral boron cages. Herein, we theoretically predicted a series of chiral borospherenes by actinide metal (An) encapsulation, which are new chiral members of the borospherene family. Theoretical calculations demonstrate that the C2 neutral and charged Ac– and Th–B39 boron clusters (Ac@B39, [Ac@B39]2+, and Th@B39, [Th@B39]3+) are the most stable structures, and each borospherene possesses degenerate enantiomers, in accordance with the chiral borospherenes B39−. In contrast, the global minimum structures of Cf embedded borospherenes have no symmetry (C1). All the chiral actinoborospherenes [An@B39]n+ (An = Ac, n = 0, 2; An = Th, n = 0, 3) possess high formation energies, especially C2 [Th@B39]3+. Bonding analysis shows that each complex of [Ac@B39]n+ and [Th@B39]n+ has the characteristic of σ + π double delocalization, and the Th–B bonds possess relatively higher covalency than the Ac–B bonds, resulting in the higher formation energy of C2 [Th@B39]3+. Therefore, the covalent character of An–B bonding may be essential for the formation of these chiral actinoborospherenes. This work extends the chiral borospherenes to actinide metal-doped chiral borospherenes, and sheds light on the design of chiral metalloborospherenes.

Mutual separation of trivalent americium (Am3+) and curium (Cm3+) ions through liquid–liquid extraction is challenging due to the similarity in their chemical properties. Three N, O combined extractants 2,6-pyridinedicarboxylic acid di(N-ethyl-4-fluoroanilide) (Et(pFPh)DPA), diphenyl(2-pyridyl)phosphine oxide (Ph2PyPO), and alkyldiamide amine with 2-ethylhexylalkyl chains (ADAAM(EH)) have been identified to exhibit selectivity for Am3+ over Cm3+. In this work, the structures, bonding nature, and thermodynamic behaviors of a series of representative Am- and Cm-complexes with these ligands have been systematically investigated using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Based on our calculations, the ONO angle formed by three donor atoms of the ligand in the Am-complex is slightly larger than that in its Cm-analogue. The studied ligands show their preference toward Am3+ by opening their “mouths” slightly wider. According to the Mayer bond order and the quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM) analyses, the interactions between the O donor atoms of these ligands and Am3+ and Cm3+ ions show some weak partial covalent character, and compared to the Am–O bond, there is relatively more covalency in the Cm–O bond in the corresponding complex. However, opposite results can be found in the Am–N and Cm–N bonding for the first two ligands. Particularly, for the better separation ligand ADAAM(EH), the Am–N and Cm–N interactions are extremely weak and no covalent character exists in the bonding. Nevertheless, the difference between the very weak Am–N and Cm–N interactions still leads to a better performance of ADAAM(EH). Based on the comparison of these ligands, we can find that weakening the binding ability of N atoms in the ligand may increase the difference between the Am–N and Cm–N interactions, thus enhancing the Am3+/Cm3+ separation ability of the ligand. Our study might provide new insights into understanding the selectivity of these three N, O combined ligands toward minor actinides and pave the way for designing efficient Am3+/Cm3+ extraction and separation ligands.

Herein, we report a new uranyl–organic polyhedron U4L4 (L = BTPCA) assembled from uranyl and a semirigid tritopic ligand. By adjusting the carbon chain length of organic templates, two complexes can be obtained based on the diverse secondary assembly of U4L4 cages. The mechanism of different arrangements of U4L4 cages induced by organic templates was explored in detail.

A synergistic strategy for enhancing U(VI) capture under highly acidic conditions (2 M HNO3) by radiation resistant phosphonate-functionalized two-dimensional covalent organic frameworks with tailor-made binding sites bearing a strong affinity was described. The combination of the radiation resistant characteristic with a strong acid-resistant property endows COFs with practical capabilities for actinide capture from real radioactive liquid waste.

The exploration of metal-doped boron clusters has a great significance in the design of high coordination number (CN) compounds. Actinide-doped boron clusters are probable candidates for achieving high CNs. In this work, we systematically explored a series of actinide metal atom (U, Np, and Pu) doped B20 boron clusters An@B20 (An = U, Np, and Pu) by global minimum structural searches and density functional theory (DFT). Each An@B20 cluster is confirmed to be a twenty-coordinate complex, which is the highest CN obtained in the chemistry of actinide-doped boron clusters so far. The predicted global minima of An@B20 are tubular structures with actinide atoms as centers, which can be considered as boron molecular drums. In An@B20, U@B20 has a relatively high symmetry of C2, while both Np@B20 and Pu@B20 exhibit C1 symmetry. Extensive bonding analysis demonstrates that An@B20 has σ and π delocalized bonding, and the U-B bonds possess a relatively higher covalency than the Np-B and Pu-B bonds, resulting in the higher formation energy of U@B20. Therefore, the covalent character of An-B bonding may be crucial for the formation of these high CN actinide-centered boron clusters. These results deepen our understanding of actinide metal doped boron clusters and provide new clues for developing stable high CN boron-based nanomaterials.

Research on synthesizing new coordination-driven polyrotaxanes as well as regulating their structural diversity contributes to the success of macrocycle-based supramolecular materials. In this work, we describe the synthesis of a new kind of actinide-organic polyrotaxane involving crown ether macrocycles for the first time. Crystal structures of two uranyl polyrotaxane compounds, UCER-1 and UCER-2, as well as a third non-polyrotaxane compound UON-1, have been determined, and the formation mechanism of actinide-organic polyrotaxanes is discussed in terms of factors affecting the assembly process. A comparison of the reaction conditions and the corresponding outcomes suggests the necessity of a host–guest pseudorotaxane linker for the successful construction of targeted actinide-organic polyrotaxanes. The coordination of different coordination atoms, especially bromide ions and uranyl ions, is analyzed in detail through theoretical calculations. As an extension of cucurbituril-based uranyl-organic polyrotaxanes, the introduction of crown ether macrocycles as a new supramolecular element brings a different kind of actinide polyrotaxane with intriguing molecular structures and supramolecular assembly behaviours, and will, we believe, expand the research scope of actinide rotaxane coordination polymers.

The stability of many MOFs is not satisfactory, which severely limits the exploration of their potential applications. Given this, we have proposed a strategy to improve the stability of MOFs by introducing alkali metal K+ capable of coordinating with metal nodes, which finally induces the interpenetrating uranyl-porphyrin framework to connect as a whole (IHEP-9). The stability experiments reveal that the IHEP-9 has good thermal stability up to 400 °C and can maintain its crystalline state in the aqueous solution with pH ranging from 2 to 11. The catalytic activity of IHEP-9 as a heterogeneous photocatalyst for CO2 cycloaddition under the driving of visible light at room temperature is also demonstrated. This induced interpenetration and fixation method may be promising for the fabrication of more functional MOFs with improved structural stability.

The design and development of a water-soluble heterocyclic ligand are believed to be an alternative way for improving the separation efficiency of actinides from lanthanides. Herein, we designed and synthesized a novel hydrophilic multidentate ligand: disulfonated N,N'-diphenyl-2,9-diamide-1,10-phenanthroline (DS-Ph-DAPhen) with soft and hard donor atoms, as a masking agent in aqueous solutions for Am(III) separation. The combination of N,N,N',N'-tetraoctyldiglycolamide in kerosene and DS-Ph-DAPhen in aqueous phases could separate Am(III) from Eu(III) across a range of nitric acid concentrations with very high selectivity. The coordination behaviors of Eu(III) with DS-Ph-DAPhen in aqueous solutions were studied by UV-vis titration, electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, and Fourier transform infrared spectra. The results indicated that Eu(III) ions could form both 1:1 and 1:2 complexes with the DS-Ph-DAPhen ligand in aqueous solution. Density functional theory calculation suggests that there are more covalent characters for Am-N bonds than that for Eu-N bonds in the complexes, which supports the better selectivity of the DS-Ph-DAPhen ligand toward Am(III) over Eu(III). This work demonstrates a feasible alternative approach to separating trivalent actinides from lanthanides with high selectivity.

Uranium, as an important resource for the sustainable development of mankind in the future, is plentiful in reserves. With the deep understanding of the unique electronic structure and properties of uranium, the resourcing and potential applications of uranium have gained extensive attention. This review summarized the application of uranium in organic synthesis and its development tendency, which mainly includes the organic conversion catalyzed by uranium (valence +4 and +6).

The immune function of immune organs is extremely crucial for maintaining organism health status, which ultimately affects fish growth. Our previous study has found that dietary supplementation of (2-carboxyethyl)dimethylsulfonium Bromide (Br-DMPT) in non-fish meal (NFM) diet could promote the growth of grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella), whereas the underlying reason or mechanism for this results is largely unclear. Herein, we further explored whether dietary supplementation of Br-DMPT promoted fish growth is connected with the enhanced immune function in the immune organs (the head kidney, spleen and skin). In this study, 540 fish (216.49 ± 0.29 g) were irregularly distributed to six groups with three replicates (30 fish replicate−1) and fed corresponding diets group containing a fish meal (FM) diet group and five different NFM diets supplemented with gradational Br-DMPT (0–520.0 mg/kg level) group for 60 days. After the 60-days feeding trial, 8 fish from each replicate were selected and then conducted a challenge test with A. hydrophila for 14 days. Our results indicated that in the NFM diets, appropriate Br-DMPT: (1) significantly decreased the morbidity of skin haemorrhage and lesion after A. hydrophila infection (P 0.05). Taken together, in non-fish meal diet, appropriate supplementation of Br-DMPT could improve the disease resistance capacity, non-specific immunity and ameliorate inflammation, and simultaneously could mitigate these adverse effects induced by the non-fish meal diet in fish immune organs. Moreover, this study may be helpful to decipher the underlying mechanisms of how Br-DMPT promote fish growth by immune organs and also provide scientific theoretical evidence for the future application of Br-DMPT as a new immunopotentiator in aquaculture industry.

The development of the uranyl cation as a powerful photocatalyst is seriously delayed in comparison with the advances in its fundamental and structural chemistry. However, its characteristic high oxidative capability in the excited state ([UO2 ]2+ * (+2.6 V vs. SHE; SHE=standard hydrogen electrode) combined with blue-light absorption (hv=380-500 nm) and a long-lived fluorescence lifetime up to microseconds have reveals that the uranyl cation approaches an ideal photocatalyst for visible-light-driven organic transformations. Described herein is the successful use of uranyl nitrate as a photocatalyst to enable C(sp3 )-H activation and C-C bond formation through hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) under blue-light irradiation. In particular, this operationally simple strategy provides an appropriate approach to the synthesis of diverse and valuable diarylmethane motifs. Mechanistic studies and DFT calculations have provided insights into the detailed mechanism of the photoinduced HAT pathway. This research suggests a general platform that could popularize promising uranyl photocatalytic performance.

Summary Anion-scavenging materials tailored for 99TcO4− trapping are urgently needed for both nuclear-related environmental remediation and management of spent nuclear fuel. For the first time, we report here an ultra-robust imidazolium-decorated covalent organic framework (COF) conjugate fabricated by an ionizing radiation strategy, for efficient capture of 99TcO4−. The charged imidazolium moieties are controllably anchored into the channel of the COF by simply adjusting the γ-ray dose, thereby leading to tunable ReO4− uptake up to 952 mg g−1 with high selectivity and fast kinetics. More importantly, the high porosity and ultra-robust nanofiber structure of the COFs make them ideal packing materials for dynamic column experiments. >99.98% ReO4−/TcO4− can be efficiently separated and re-collected, even after four adsorption-desorption cycles, ranking a new record of the elimination rate for ReO4− adsorption. The performance of these materials suggests attractive opportunities in practical applications for TcO4− removal from the environment and nuclear waste.

Herein we present a new viologen-based radical-containing metal-organic framework (RMOF) Gd-IHEP-7, which upon heating in air undergoes a single-crystal-to-single-crystal transformation to generate Gd-IHEP-8. Both RMOFs exhibit excellent air and water stability as a result of favorable radical-radical interactions, and their long-lifetime radicals result in wide spectral absorption in the range 200-2500 nm. Gd-IHEP-7 and Gd-IHEP-8 show excellent activity toward solar-driven nitrogen fixation, with ammonia production rates of 128 and 220 μmol h-1 g-1 , respectively. Experiments and theoretical calculations indicate that both RMOFs have similar nitrogen fixation pathways. The enhanced catalytic efficiency of Gd-IHEP-8 versus Gd-IHEP-7 is attributed to intermediates stabilized by enhanced hydrogen bonding.

The separation of actinides has a vital place in nuclear fuel reprocessing, recovery of radionuclides, and remediation of environmental contamination. Here we propose a new paradigm of nanocluster-based actinide separation, namely, nanoextraction, that can achieve efficient sequestration of uranium in an unprecedented form of giant coordination nanocages using a cone-shaped macrocyclic pyrogallol[4]arene as the extractant. The U24-based hexameric pyrogallol[4]arene nanocages with distinctive [U2(PG)2] binuclear units (PG = pyrogallol) that rapidly assembled in situ in monophasic solvent were identified by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry, NMR spectroscopy, and small-angle X-ray and neutron scattering. Comprehensive biphasic extraction studies showed that this novel separation strategy has enticing advantages such as fast kinetics, high efficiency, and good selectivity over lanthanides, thereby demonstrating its potential for efficient separation of actinide ions.

Diglycolamide-based ligands have recently received increased attention due to their outstanding affinity for trivalent actinides and lanthanides. The structure optimization of the ligands, however, still remains a hot topic to achieve better extraction performance. In this work, we prepare and investigate three multidentate diglycolamide ligands for the selective separation of Eu(III) over Am(III) from a nitric acid solution to explore the effect on the extraction of alkyl groups on the nitrogen atoms in the center of the BisDGA ligands. The introduction of ethyl or isopropyl groups on the central nitrogen atoms greatly increased the distribution ratios of trivalent metal ions and enhanced the separation factor of Eu(III) over Am(III). The complexation behaviors of Eu(III) and Am(III) ions were studied by slope analyses, electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS), and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy. The results indicated that the trivalent metal ions were extracted as 1:2 and 1:3 complexes for all three BisDGA ligands during the extraction. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations verified the relevant experimental conclusion that the selectivity of THEE-BisDGA for Eu(III) is better than that for Am(III). The metal-DGA bonds in the ML3(NO3)3 complexes seem to be stronger than those in ML2(NO3)3 complexes.

Background No guideline recommends antiviral therapy for hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg)-positive chronic hepatitis B patients with persistently normal alanine aminotransferase levels and a high hepatitis B virus (HBV) DNA viral load. Aim To evaluate the feasibility and safety of a Chinese herbal formula as a therapeutic option for chronic HBV infection. Methods In total, 395 patients (30-65 years old) with confirmed HBeAg-positive chronic hepatitis B infection and persistently normal alanine aminotransferase were randomized to receive either Chinese herbal formula or placebo for 96 wk. Endpoints to evaluate therapeutic efficacy included: (1) HBV DNA levels decreased to less than 4 log10 IU/mL at weeks 48 and 96; and (2) HBeAg clearance and seroconversion rates at weeks 48 and 96. Results HBV DNA levels ≤ 4 log10 IU/mL were 10.05% at week 48 and 18.59% at week 96 in the treatment group. The HBeAg clearance and conversion rates were 8.54% and 8.04% at week 48 and 16.08% and 14.57% at week 96, respectively. However, HBV DNA levels ≤ 4 log10 IU/mL were 2.55% and 2.55% at weeks 48 and 96, respectively, and the HBeAg clearance rates were 3.06% and 5.61% at weeks 48 and 96, respectively, in the control group. The quantitative hepatitis B surface antigen and HBeAg levels at baseline and changes during the treatment period as well as the alanine aminotransferase elevation at weeks 12 and 24 were strong predictors of HBeAg clearance. Conclusion High rates of HBV DNA reduction, HBeAg clearance and seroconversion could be achieved with Chinese herbal formula treatments, and the treatments were relatively safe for HBeAg-positive chronic hepatitis B-infected patients with persistently normal alanine aminotransferase. The ability of the compound to modulate host immune function probably contributed to this effect.

Elastic metal-organic materials (MOMs) capable of multiple stimuli-responsiveness based on dual-stress and thermally responsive triple-helix coordination polymers are presented. The strong metal-coordination linkage and the flexibility of organic linkers in these MOMs, rather than the 4 Å stacking interactions observed in organic crystals, causes the helical chain to act like a molecular spring and thus accounts for their macroscopic elasticity. The thermosalient effect of elastic MOMs is reported for the first time. Crystal structure analyses at different temperatures reveal that this thermoresponsiveness is achieved by adaptive regulation of the triple-helix chains by fine-tuning the opening angle of flexible V-shaped organic linkers and rotation of its lateral conjugated groups to resist possible expansion, thus demonstrating the vital role of adaptive reorganization of triple-helix metal-organic chains as a molecular spring-like motif in crystal jumping.

Older individuals have an elevated risk for chronic pain as half of all individuals over 65 years old have at least one chronic pain condition. Unfortunately, relevant assessment tools and recommendations for chronic pain management targeting older adults are lacking. This study explores changes in response to pain between young (2–3 months old) and geriatric (20–24 months old) ages using mice. Although cutaneous thresholds to brisk stimuli (von Frey and radiant heat assays) were not affected, behavioral responses to tonic stimuli (acetone and capsaicin assays) were more pronounced in geriatric animals. After nerve injury, geriatric mice present an altered neuropathic pain profile with hypersensitivity to mechanical stimuli but not acetone and an impairment in conditioned noxious stimuli avoidance. This altered behavioral response pattern was associated with an abnormal monoaminergic signature in the medial prefrontal cortex, suggesting decreased COMT function. We conclude that young and geriatric mice exhibit different behavioral and physiological responses to the experience of pain, suggesting that knowledge and practices must be adjusted for geriatric populations.

Neuropathic pain is a complex, debilitating disease that results from injury to the somatosensory nervous system. The presence of systemic chronic inflammation has been observed in chronic pain patients, but whether it plays a causative role remains unclear. This study aims to determine the perturbation of systemic homeostasis by an injury to peripheral nerve and its involvement in neuropathic pain. We assessed the proteomic profile in the serum of mice at 1-day and 1-month following partial sciatic nerve injury (PSNL) or sham surgery. We also assessed mouse mechanical and cold sensitivity in naïve mice after receiving intravenous administration of serum from PSNL or sham mice. Mass spectrometry-based proteomic analysis revealed that PSNL resulted in a long-lasting alteration of serum proteome, where the majority of differentially expressed proteins were in inflammation related pathways, involving cytokines/chemokines, autoantibodies and complement factors. While transferring sham serum to naïve mice did not change their pain sensitivity, PSNL serum significantly lowered mechanical thresholds and induced cold hypersensitivity in naïve mice. With broad anti-inflammatory properties, bone marrow cell extracts (BMCE) not only partially restored serum proteomic homeostasis, but also significantly ameliorated PSNL-induced mechanical allodynia, and serum from BMCE-treated PSNL mice no longer induced hypersensitivity in naïve mice. These findings clearly demonstrate that nerve injury has a long-lasting impact on systemic homeostasis, and nerve injury associated systemic inflammation contributes to the development of neuropathic pain.

Comparing newly generated mouse models for Ube3a downregulation (models of Angelman syndrome) vs. Ube3a upregulation (models for autism), we find reciprocal effects of Ube3a gene dosage on phenotypes associated with circadian rhythmicity, including the amount of locomotor activity. Consistent with results from neurons in general, we find that Ube3a is imprinted in neurons of the suprachiasmatic nuclei (SCN), the pacemaking circadian brain locus, despite other claims that SCN neurons were somehow exceptional to these imprinting rules. In addition, Ube3a-deficient mice lack the typical drop in wake late in the dark period and have blunted responses to sleep deprivation. Suppression of physical activity by light in Ube3a-deficient mice is not due to anxiety as measured by behavioral tests and stress hormones; quantification of stress hormones may provide a mechanistic link to sleep alteration and memory deficits caused by Ube3a deficiency, and serve as an easily measurable biomarker for evaluating potential therapeutic treatments for Angelman syndrome. We conclude that reduced Ube3a gene dosage affects not only neurodevelopment but also sleep patterns and circadian rhythms.

In order to optimize the application of Al electrodes in pyrochemical reprocessing of spent nuclear fuel, the feasibility of porous Al electrodes to separate actinides-lanthanides (An-Ln) in LiCl-KCl eutectic melt was explored. The separation efficiencies and rates of U and lanthanides (La, Ce, Sm) on Al electrodes with regular and irregular and without pores were compared. U was selectively recovered in the form of U-Al alloys by controlling the potential (−1.2 V) on both Al rod and porous Al electrodes. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM)-energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) showed that the obtained granular alloys were mainly Al3U and Al4U, and inductive coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) indicated that there was almost no Ln in the electrolysis products. Positively, the required separation time was greatly shortened, and the separation rate was effectively improved when porous Al electrodes were used. In addition, the Al honeycomb electrode with regular pores has better kinetic performance compared with Al foam electrodes with irregular pores. The results indicate that the specially designed porous Al electrodes may have a good application prospect for the separation of An-Ln in the pyrochemical reprocessing of spent nuclear fuel.

In contrast to previous reports, we find that Ube3a is imprinted in neurons of the suprachiasmatic nuclei, the pacemaking circadian brain locus. In addition, Ube3a-deficient mice lack the typical drop in wake late in the dark period and have blunted responses to sleep deprivation. Suppression of physical activity by light in Ube3a-deficient mice is not due to anxiety as measured by behavioral tests and stress hormones; quantification of stress hormones may serve as an easily measurable biomarker for evaluating potential therapeutic treatments for Angelman syndrome. We conclude that reduced Ube3a gene dosage affects not only neurodevelopment but also sleep patterns and circadian rhythms.

Efficient separation of neptunium and plutonium from spent nuclear fuel is essential for advanced nuclear fuel cycles. At present, the development of effective actinide separation ligands has become a top priority. As common adsorbents for extracting uranium from seawater, amidoxime-based adsorbents may also be able to separate actinides from high-level liquid waste (HLLW). In this work, the complexation of Np(IV,V,VI) and Pu(IV) and alkyl chains (R = C13H26) modified with amidoximate (AO−) and carboxyl (Ac−) functional groups was systematically studied by quantum chemical calculations. For all the studied complexing species, the RAc− and RAO− ligands act as monodentate or bidentate ligands. Complexes with AO− groups show higher covalency of the metal–ligand bonding than the analogues with Ac− groups, in line with the binding energy analysis. Bonding analysis verifies that these amidoxime/carboxyl-based adsorbents possess higher coordination affinity toward Pu(IV) than toward Np(IV), and the Np(VI) complexes have stronger covalent interactions than Np(V). According to thermodynamic analysis, these adsorbents have the ability to separate Np(IV,V,VI) and Pu(IV), and also exhibit potential performance for partitioning Pu(IV) from Np(IV) under acidic conditions. This work can help to deeply understand the interaction between transuranium elements and amidoxime-based adsorbents, and provide a theoretical basis for the separation of actinides with amidoxime-based adsorbents.

In molten LiCl salt at 973 K, Nd-Si alloy was successfully prepared by direct electro reduction of a mixed oxide of Nd2O3-SiO2 or Nd2O3-Si at a constant potential. The reduction mechanism was studied by CV through metal cavity electrode in conjunction with XRD, SEM and EDS results of the electrolytic products under different conditions. It was found that the reduction process of Nd2O3-SiO2 was carried out in two steps. First, SiO2 was reduced to elemental silicon, and then Nd2O3 was deposited on silicon to form Nd-Si alloys. In addition, the effects of the electrolysis voltage have been investigated. As a result, it was found that the reduction rate increased with the increasing of the electrolysis voltage, and it was easy to prepare pure Nd-Si alloys when the atomic content of silicon was 50% in the mixed oxides. This work first reported the preparation of Nd-Si alloy by direct electroreduction of its oxides.

Nitrogen-donor ligands have been considered to be promising agents for separating trivalent actinides (An(III)) from lanthanides (Ln(III)). Thereinto, how to decorate these ligands for better extraction performance is urgent to design "perfect" separating extractants. In this work, we systematically explored a series of heterocyclic N-donor ligands (L1 = dipyridazino[4,3-c:3',4'-h]acridine, L2 = dipyridazino[3,4-a:4',3'-j]phenazine, L3 = 2,6-di(cinnolin-3-yl)pyridine)), as well as their substituted derivatives, and compared their extraction and complexation ability toward An(III) and Ln(III) ions by using quasi-relativistic density functional theory (DFT). We found that the pyridazine N atoms probably play a notable role in electron donation to metal cations by molecular orbital (MO) and bond order analyses. Besides, the calculated results clearly verified that these N-donor ligands possess higher coordination affinity toward Am(III) over Eu(III). The rigid ligands (L1 and L2) exhibit higher selective abilities for the Am(III)/Eu(III) separation compared with that of the flexible ligand (L3). For each ligand, the 1:2 (metal/ligand) extraction reaction is predicted to be most probable in the separation process. The introduction of an alkyl group on the lateral chain or an electron-donating group on the main chain gives rise to a better extraction performance of the ligands, and the CyMe4 or MeO substituted ligands show higher extraction and separation ability. Simultaneous introduction of CyMe4 and MeO groups can enhance the extraction ability of the ligand to metal ions, but the separating ability depends on the differences of the extraction capacity of An(III) and Ln(III). This work can help to gain a more in-depth understanding the selectivity differences of similar N-donor ligands and provide more theoretical insights into the design of novel extractants for An(III)/Ln(III) separation.
