Cet article propose un bilan succinct des recherches effectuées sur le Mont Beuvray et à ses abords entre 2013 et 2016 dans le cadre du programme international de recherche consacré à l’oppidum de Bibracte. Les nouveaux acquis concernent le quartier du Champlain, l’îlot des Grandes Forges à la Pâture du Couvent, les domus PC1 et PC2, l’éminence du Theurot de la Roche (avec notamment la mise en évidence de tranchées minières et d’une énigmatique structure excavée maçonnée de 9,2 x 10,7 m) et, extra muros, le sanctuaire gallo-romain des Sources de l’Yonne… Mais on retiendra surtout les résultats obtenus sur le replat central du Parc aux Chevaux, où les enclos maçonnés tardifs de PC14 et PC15 s’avèrent hériter d’un espace public plus ancien constitué par un enclos carré de 45 m de côté reconstruit à plusieurs reprises sous la forme d’une architecture à ossature bois. Cet enclos est initialement ceinturé d’un murus gallicus qui fait office de mur-terrasse sur ses faces tournées vers l’aval et il comporte une cour entourée d’un quadriportique, qui est remplacée ultérieurement par une halle en position centrale. En place au plus tard à la veille de la Guerre des Gaules, il témoigne de l’urbanisme tout en contraste de Bibracte à partir du milieu du Ier s. av. notre ère, avec la cohabitation d’édifices publics totalement étrangers à la tradition gréco-romaine, comme celui-ci, et d’autres de style purement italien, comme le forum de la Pâture du Couvent. Une dernière avancée notable réside dans les progrès spectaculaires qu’ont connus les prospections géophysiques, notamment par la technique du géoradar, ce qui ouvre de nouvelles perspectives pour l’approche extensive et non-destructive de l’organisation spatiale du site.La seconde partie de l’article est consacrée à la présentation d’un tableau synoptique de l’évolution des quartiers de Bibracte, constitué à partir de la compilation des données des fouilles opérées depuis les années 1980. This article presents a brief summary of research carried out on Mont Beuvray and its surroundings from 2013 to 2016 as part of an international research program dedicated to the Bibracte oppidum. The new information concerns the Champlain, the island of the Grandes Forges à la Pâture du Couvent, the PC1 and PC2 domi, the Theurot de la Roche hill (with mining trenches and an enigmatic excavated walled structure measuring 9.2 x 10.7 m) and, extra muros, the Gallo-Roman sanctuary of the Sources de l’Yonne. But the most striking results were obtained on the central plateau of the Parc aux Chevaux, where the late walled enclosures of PC14 and PC15 were built on an earlier public space composed of a square enclosure (45 x 45 m) that was reconstructed several times in the form of a wood-framed architecture. This enclosure was initially surrounded by a murus gallicus that formed a wall-terrace on its sides turned in the downstream direction, and it has a courtyard surrounded by a quadriportico, which was later replaced by a centrally placed hall. In place at the latest just before the Gallic War, it attests to an urbanism in stark contrast to Bibracte starting in the middle of the 1st century BC, with the cohabitation of public buildings completely foreign to the Greco-Roman tradition, such as this one, and others of a purely Italian style, such as the Pâture du Couvent forum. The geophysical surveys yielded spectacular results, especially by the use of the georadar technique, which will enable us to proceed with an extensive and non-destructive approach to understanding the spatial organization of the site.The second part of the article is dedicated to the presentation of a datagrid of the evolution of the Bibracte quarters, compiled based on excavation data obtained since the 1980s. Der vorliegende Artikel gibt einen kurzen Überblick über die Forschungen, die im Rahmen des internationalen Forschungsprogramms zum Oppidum von Bibracte in den Jahren 2013 bis 2016 auf dem Mont Beuvray und in seiner Umgebung durchgeführt wurden. Die neu gewonnenen Erkenntnisse betreffen das Areal von Champlain, die îlot des Grandes Forges auf der Pâture du Couvent, die domus PC1 und PC2, die Anhöhe von Theurot de la Roche (und hier insbesondere die Identifizierung von bergbaulichen Gräben und einer rätselhaften eingetieften und gemauerten Struktur von 9,2 x 10,7 M.) sowie, extra-muros, das gallo-römische Heiligtum an den Yonne-Quellen. Vorwiegend werden jedoch neue Ergebnisse zur zentralen Terrasse von Parc aux Chevaux vorgestellt, denen zufolge die späteren gemauerten Einfriedungen von PC14 und PC15 einen älteren öffentlichen Platz bestehend aus einer quadratischen Einfriedung von 45 M. Seitenlänge ablösen. Die letztgenannte Einfriedung wurde mehrfach in Holzrahmenbauweise umgebaut : zu Beginn war sie von einem murus gallicus umgeben, der an den talabwärts gerichteten Seiten als Terrassenmauer diente. Ferner besaß sie einen Hof, der von einer Quadriportikus umgeben war. Zu einem späteren Zeitpunkt wurde der Hof durch eine zentral liegende Halle ersetzt. Die Einfriedung, an Ort und Stelle spätestens kurz vor Beginn des gallischen Krieges, bezeugt für Bibracte eine Urbanisierung der Kontraste ab der Mitte des 1. Jh. v. u. Z. und zwar in dem Sinne, dass öffentliche Gebäude, die in der griechisch-römischen Tradition vollkommen fremd sind, wie die genannte Einfriedung, neben solchen im rein italischen Stil auftreten, wie dem forum auf der Pâture du Couvent. Ein weiterer erwähnenswerter Erfolg betrifft die geophysikalische Prospektion, bei der insbesondere durch den Einsatz der Georadar-Technik spektakuläre Fortschritte erzielt wurden. Dies eröffnet neue Perspektiven für eine flächenhafte und zerstörungsfreie Erforschung der räumlichen Organisation des Fundortes.Im zweiten Teil des Artikels wird eine Übersichtstabelle zur Entwicklung der Areale von Bibracte präsentiert, die auf den gesammelten Grabungsdaten seit den 1980er Jahren basiert.(trad. This paper explores how the Roman empire was perceived and experienced in the Greek world from c. 200 BCE to the early Principate, with a special focus on the Romaia, a festival with athletic and other contests in honour of the goddess Thea Romē. The Romaia were a driving force that played a crucial and active role in the cultural and political transformations that connected the loosely integrated Greek world to the new global empire. They were collective rituals that captured audience attention through spectacle. At the Romaia the power of Rome was experienced en masse, making them exceptional coordinating mechanisms for the rapid transfer of ideas and information at a local level. Moreover, network theory helps us to understand how festivals contributed to the spread of Roman influence. The Romaia linked Rome to the Panhellenic festival network, which played a major role in the constitution of an imagined community of Greeks.

Robin G. Collingwood is considered the great researcher of RomanoBritish studies in the interbellum period. His contributions in this field, although less famous than his works in the Philosophy of History, succeeded in inserting Roman Britain into British history, and brought in tow a unique interpretative approach that weaves philosophical and historical concepts with his archaeological research on the phenomenon of the "Romanisation" of the Roman provinces. His belief in the inevitability of the scholar's prejudice in approaching his object and in his/her need and possibility to recreate the past in his/her own mind, in the present, has given Collingwood a kind of bibliographic renaissance in post-processual archaeological production. Somehow connected to this, his conception of "Romanisation," however rigid, is indelible to the epistemological critique of the term in British postcolonialism. Collingwood’s legacy usually oscillates between the reverential and the ridiculous, something that only reinforces the importance of such longlived movements.

This paper aims at the study of the Roman province of Cilicia, whose formation process was quite long (from the 1st century BC to 72 AD) and complicated by various events. Firstly, it will focus on a more precise determination of the geographic limits of the region, which are not clear and quite ambiguous in the ancient sources. Secondly, the author will thoroughly analyze the formation of the province itself and its progressive Romanization. Finally, political organization of Cilicia within the Roman empire in its different forms throughout time will be taken into account.

From the end of the third century BC on, the funerary culture of the Etruscan city of Chiusi saw the gradual disappearance of the most expensive containers and tombs. At the same time, there was first a dramatic increase in the number of such monuments, followed by an equally sharp decline in the first century BC. The qualitative development has traditionally been explained using sumptuary laws, which should have constrained funerary expenditure. However, a close examination of the local evidence reveals that this is not only unlikely, but also does not explain the quantitative development and why there was a social and cultural need to constrain these funerary objects in the first place. Using the concepts of distinction and habitus developed by Bourdieu, this paper analyses the developments in Chiusine funerary practice by focusing on social interactions within and between élites and non-élites. This gives both groups agency in a complex social, cultural and political process that caused the criteria for distinction to change, ultimately making funerary culture less important for status differentiation in the rapidly changing context of Hellenistic Italy.

L’oppidum de Sant Julià de Ramis se trouve à l’extrême nord de la Péninsule Ibérique. Cet oppidum était situé au sommet d’une colline, à 203 m au-dessus de la mer. Le fleuve Ter, en provenance des Pyrénées et délimitant la montagne, se dirige vers la mer où il débouche près du site grec d’Emporion. Les fouilles effectuées au cours des dernières années ont permis remonter la chronologie initiale jusqu’à arriver à la première moitié du VIe siècle av. J.-C. Au début du IVe siècle av. J.-C, le noyau réduit de la phase antérieure connut une croissance notable jusqu’à atteindre une surface d’environ 3/4 hectares. Les données apportées par les fouilles de ces dernières années nous permettent de constater qu’après la conquête romaine il y a non seulement la continuité de l’occupation du lieu mais aussi que le site occupe une situation privilégiée par rapport aux autres oppida. A partir de la troisième décennie du Ier siècle av. J.-C., on constate que Sant Julià n’a connu qu’une continuité d’habitat ponctuelle. The oppidum of Sant Julià de Ramis is at the northeast of the Iberian Peninsula. This oppidum was located atop a hill 203 m above the sea. The river Ter, from the Pyrenees, delimitates the mountain of Sant Julià de Ramis and towards to the sea, near to the Greek site of Emporion. Excavations carried out in recent year’s shows that the original chronology of Sant Julià is since first half of the sixth century BC. During the first half of fourth century BC the oppidum growth, reaching an area of about 3 / 4 acres. Also, the data from excavations carried out in recent years show that the place is privileged compared to other near oppida. Since the third decade of the first century BC, it is clear that Sant Julià was inhabited only sporadically.

Cette étude sur la cité celtibère Contrebia Belaisca est l'occasion d'une mise au point des connaissances tirées des nombreuses sources, littéraires, numismatiques et épigraphiques, et des résultats archéologiques concernant cette cité, qui composent un dossier exceptionnel pour la région, la moyenne vallée de l'Èbre, et la période, la fin de la République romaine. Cette cité se distingue, entre autres, par un édifice public remarquable du fait de son architecture, fruit de son dynamisme économique et commercial, par une maison aristocratique portant la marque des influences italiques, par plusieurs tables de bronze mentionnant des résultats judiciaires, témoignages du positionnement stratégique de la cité dans la province d'Hispanie Citérieure, et par une liste d'une partie de ses habitants permettant de mieux saisir sa composition sociale. L'ensemble permet de dresser un portrait partiel mais néanmoins unique d'une cité celtibère sous domination romaine entre la fin du IIe siècle et le début du Ier siècle av. J.-C. This study of the Celtiberian town Contrebia Belaisca is the occasion for setting the record straight of the data drawn from many sources, literary, numismatic and epigraphic and of the archeological results concerning the city. All constitute an exceptional dossier for the region, the median valley of the Ebro river, and the era, the end of the Roman Republic. The town is remarkable, among other things, for a noteworthy public edifice on account of its architecture, the outcome of its economic and commercial dynamism, for an aristocratic homestead bearing the mark of Italic influences, for several bronze tables mentioning judiciary results, testifying to the strategic position of the town in the province of Hispania Citerior, and for a list of part of its inhabitants enabling us to have a better view of its social components. All together these elements enable us to draw a partial yet unique picture of a Celtiberian town under Roman rule between the end of the IInd century and the beginning of the Ist century B.C.

L’étude du corpus épigraphique de la cité des Ausques révèle en premier lieu la part relativement importante occupée par les noms uniques ou surnoms à consonance grecque ou celto-gauloise, la présence de noms « aquitains » dans le chef-lieu et la prédominance des anthroponymes latins ou d’apparence latine. Cette enquête permet par ailleurs de souligner la porosité entre les types de noms, que traduit le passage, entre deux générations d’individus, d’une composante à une autre (avec cependant des retours en arrière), étant entendu que la présence de « noms de couverture » intégrés dans l’ensemble des noms latins ou apparemment latins reste difficilement observable. The study of the epigraphic corpus of the city of the Auscii reveals in the first place the relatively important part occupied by single names or seemingly Greek or Celto-Gallic nicknames, the presence of « Aquitanic » names in the county town and the prevalence of Latin or Latin-looking anthroponyms. This inquiry enables one on the other hand to underscore the porosity of the types of names betrayed by the passage, in between two generations of individuals, from one component to the other (with yet some retracings of steps), although the presence of « covering names » integrated into the ensemble of the Latin or seemingly Latin names remains barely observable.

International audience; In 2018, a stamped tile was discovered in the Italian-style domus of PC2, located in the oppidum of Bibracte. This mark, read as S. AV or S. AN, is printed on a fragment of tegula, apparently locally produced at the latest during the end of the 1st c. BC and on a close range from the mont Beuvray. Comparable to what can be noticed at the same time in the Italian peninsula, it seems that this short text can be read as the initials belonging to the owner of the workshop that produced this very tile. Such a discovery is the occasion to discuss the passing of the Roman know-how to the Aeduans and the identity of the craftsmen who produced those materials. These elements, deeply related to the integration of new Italian-style architectural norms in the constructions of the oppidum of Bibracte, can be considered as a clue indicating a fast and early Romanization process of the Aeduan elites close to the Roman world.; En 2018, une tuile estampillée est mise au jour dans la domus d’influence italienne PC2 au sein de l’oppidum de Bibracte.Cette marque, pouvant se lire S. AV. ou S. AN., est apposée sur un fragment de tegula qui semble produite localement, dans l’environnement proche du mont Beuvray, au plus tard à la fin du Ier s. av. J.-C. Similaire à ce qui peut être observé à la même époque dans la péninsule italienne, le texte très court semble pouvoir être lu comme les initiales identifiant le propriétaire de l’atelier de production de cette tuile. Cette découverte est de fait l’occasion de s’interroger sur la transmission des savoir-faire romains auprès des Éduens et sur l’identité des artisans qui produisent ces matériaux. Ces éléments, associés à l’intégration de nouvelles normes architecturales d’origine italique dans les constructions de l’oppidum de Bibracte, sont autant de témoignages d’une romanisation rapide et précoce des élites éduennes proches du monde romain.

Ten krótki szkic pokazuje jak złożone i trudne są badania nad przekształceniami etnicznymi, kulturowymi i cywilizacyjnymi na obszarach podporządkowanych Rzymowi. Wydaje się, że nie wystarczy już posługiwać się terminem romanizacja by wszystkie skomplikowane i różnorodne zjawiska adaptacji, akulturacji, czy też asymilacji etc. opisać. Jednocześnie pod wpływem nowych trendów i metod w naukach społecznych i humanistycznych, głównie szeroko rozumianych nauk kulturowych, opis zmian kulturowych jest równie trudny. Różnorodne ujęcia, terminy, metody, modele etc. wymagają odniesienia się do nich i nieodrzucania ich z gruntu. Docenić należy ich ważność choćby poprzez fakt dostrzeżenia, że również pokonani mieli swój dorobek kulturowy i tożsamość, a nie byli tylko pasywnymi odbiorcami wpływów cywilizacji przynoszonej przez zdobywców. Nie można jednak pominąć jej oddziaływania, choć nie jest bez znaczenia czy indywidualnie, czy grupowo mieszkańcy podporządkowywanych obszarów reagowali na wzory przynoszone im właśnie z Rzymu. This short essay presents how complex and difficult it is today to study the ethnic, cultural, and civilisational transformations on the areas subjected to Rome. It seems it is no longer enough to use the term ‘Romanisation’ to describe all the complicated and diversified phenomena of adaptation, acculturation, or assimilation, etc. The new trends and methods in the social sciences and humanities, particularly the cultural sciences in the broad sense, have contributed to the complexity of the problem. Various approaches, terms, methodologies, models, etc., require taking a stand, and must not be rejected by principle. It must certainly be acknowledged that those conquered also had their cultural heritage and identity, and were not just passive recipients of the influence from the civilisation brought by the conquerors. Nevertheless, the influence must not be neglected. Whether individually, or jointly, the inhabitants of the conquered areas referred to the changes brought about by Rome and responded to such changes.

This study focuses on the political and social course of Samnium and Campania's elite between the IVth and Ist c. BCE, and on the situation of Rome within this course. The question is studied from the basis of a prosopographic catalog, established with the Oscan epigraphical corpus, Roman litterary sources – especially Livy – and the inscriptions from Delos. This catalog suggest a restitution of c. twenty aristocratic families' course during the era studied. The political horizons of these families are then questionned, especially during the times of conflict with Rome (conquest of Italy, second punic war, Social War). It turns out that the Roman question is only one of the stakes in the political life of the Oscan elite, which maintain a constellation of interests linked to various regions of Italy. The relation to Roman domination isn't homogeneous, and the rulingclass of Oscan communities divide itself, in a legitimate and open political debate, even after the conquest. The social factor of these divisions is questionned, and its influence on the contestation of Rome's authority in Italy appears practicaly inexistent, contrary to the Ancients' and some Moderns' analysis. The practices of the Oscan elite as a social group are then analysed. It appears that their situation within their native societies is stable during all the period and is hardly impacted by a hypothetical Roman interference. The study of the ruling classes' mobility testifies of the survival of contacts between the different regions of Italy, in most cases based on private aristocratic relations. The situation of Rome within this system, which maintains itself despite the Romans taking over the peninsula, is once again sparsely significative, and its attraction on Oscan elite appears as very reduced. Finally, a case study on the Italian community of Delos shows that Italian aristocraties exploit the opportunities created by the Roman conquest in order to maintain their situation in Italy itself.; Cette étude s'intéresse au parcours politique et social des élites du Samnium et de la Campanie entre les IVe et Ier siècles avant notre ère, et à la place qu'y occupe Rome. La question est traitée à partir d'un catalogue prosopographique, établi en se fondant sur le corpus épigraphique en langue osque, les sources littéraires romaines - notamment Tite-Live - et les inscriptions de Délos. Il propose une restitution du parcours d'une vingtaine de familles aristocratiques sur la période concernée. Les horizons politiques de ces familles sont ensuite interrogés, spécifiquement sur les moments de conflit avec Rome (conquête de l'Italie, deuxième guerre punique, Guerre Sociale). Il s'avère que la question romaine n'est que l'un des enjeux de la vie politique des élites osques, qui entretiennent une constellation d'intérêts avec différentes régions d'Italie. Le rapport à la domination romaine ne fait pas l'unanimité et la classe dirigeante des communautés osques se divise, dans le cadre d'un débat ouvert et légitime, même après la conquête. Le facteur social de ces divisions est mis en question, et son influence dans la contestation de l'autorité romaine en Italie apparaît comme pratiquement nulle, contrairement à l'analyse des Anciens et d'une partie des Modernes. Les pratiques des élites osques en tant que groupe social sont ensuite analysées. Il apparaît que leur situation dans leurs sociétés d'origine est stable sur toute la période et n'est pratiquement pas impactée par une éventuelle ingérence romaine. L'étude de la mobilité des classes dirigeantes témoigne de la survivance de contacts entre les différentes régions d'Italie, en général sur fond de relations privées aristocratiques. La place de Rome dans ce système, qui se maintient malgré sa prise de contrôle de l'Italie, est là-encore peu significative, et son attraction sur les élites osques semble réduite. Enfin, une étude de cas sur la communauté italienne de Délos montre que les aristocraties italiennes profitent des opportunités offertes par la conquête romaine pour entretenir leur situation en Italie même.

Les écritures paléohispaniques sont ici présentées afin de préciser leur contexte de création et de diffusion. Plusieurs questions sont privilégiées, notamment la nature de la langue ibère transcrite par l’ibérique levantin et les systèmes d’écritures choisis par les Celtibères, afin de caractériser les mutations qui touchent les langues et écritures de la péninsule Ibérique du Ier millénaire av. J.-C. S’il n’y a pas eu de créole et si le concept de « créolisation » semble peu adapté aux situations décrites, celui de « métissage » est pertinent dans le cas du gréco-ibérique et pour certaines évolutions de l’écriture du celtibérique ; la plupart des autres mutations observées relèvent davantage de « transferts culturels ». Paleohispanic writings are presented here to shed light on the context of their creation and diffusion. Several questions are raised, including the nature of the Iberian language transcribed by the Levantine Iberic writing systems, and the writings systems selected by the Celtiberians, so as to characterize the transformations that affected the languages and scripts of the Iberian Peninsula in the first millennium BC. Although there was no Creole and if the concept of “creolization” thus seems ill-suited to the situations described, the notion of “métissage” is relevant in the case of Greco-Iberian and for some changes in the Celtiberic writing; most other transformations observed are rather related to a phenomenon of “Cultural Transfer”.

International audience; A preventive archaeological excavation realized in 2010 in Jaunay-Clan, near Poitiers (Vienne), revealed the existence of a large horticultural estate from the beginning of the 1st century AD, which surface is estimated at almost seven hectares. A ditches network, horticultural pots and chequered plantation pits are near a dug composition previously unseen in Gaule: the “sanctuaire” végétal. With a very elaborated plan, this composition hardly seems to find its place into a space whose vocation would be – or would only be – productive. On the contrary it has currently analogies only with spaces which use is clearly ostentatious and oriented toward owners’ pleasure: parks and gardens of luxurious italic villae.; Une fouille d’archéologie préventive réalisée en 2010 à Jaunay-Clan, près de Poitiers dans la Vienne, a révélé la présence d’un vaste domaine horticole du début du Ier s. apr. J.-C., dont la superficie est estimée à près de sept hectares. Un réseau de fossés, des pots horticoles et des damiers de fosses de plantation y côtoient une composition fossoyée jusqu’alors inédite en Gaule : le « sanctuaire » végétal. Adoptant un plan très élaboré, cette composition ne semble toutefois trouver que difficilement sa place au sein d’une parcelle dont la vocation serait – ou ne serait que – productive. Elle n’a au contraire à l’heure actuelle d’analogies qu’au sein d’espaces dont la destination est clairement ostentatoire et tournée vers l’agrément de leurs propriétaires : les parcs et jardins de quelques luxueuses villae italiques.
