110. Effects of β-sitosterol on growth, development and midgut enzymes of Helicoverpa armigera Hübner

Abstract: Helicoverpa armigera is a global agricultural pest of serious concern. Continued use of chemical insecticides as control measures has raised grave health and environment concerns, necessitating a search for botanicals as safe alternatives. The current study investigates the effects of β-sitosterol, a bioactive phytocomponent in Thevetia neriifolia, on the growth and development, as well as on midgut enzymes of H. armigera. Dietary β-sitosterol produced dose-dependent systemic toxicity and growth inhibitory effects in H. armigera; the most significant effects were obtained with 10 μg/mL dietary β-sitosterol. Higher prepupal and pupal mortality in comparison to larval mortality and a comparatively greater reduction in average weight gained by later instars point to cumulative effects of β-sitosterol. The delayed effects were ascertained by the 82.05%-57.89% reduction in adult emergence in comparison to 95.02% emergence in controls. Dose-dependent effects of β-sitosterol were observed as significantly decreased enzyme activities of alanine aminotransaminase (ALT), aspartate aminotransaminase (AST) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) in the larval midgut. Suppression of enzyme activity was obtained in the order ALT>AST>ALP. Impaired activity of gut enzymes possibly lowered the energy reserves and affected nutrient transport through the gut epithelium, affecting the growth and development of H. armigera. Our study points to a promising use of β-sitosterol against H. armigera, although further examination and field studies are needed to ascertain its possible use in control programs.

Abstract: The present work describes the development of TiO2/SeO2 nanostructure as a potential candidate for visible light photocatalysis as well as selective fluorophore for the sensing of picric acid. The obtained nanostructure consists of uniform globular nanoparticles having approximate size of 170 nm and possess an optical band gap of 2.33 eV with absorption maxima at 473 nm. The photocatalyst was able to achieve 90.34% degradation efficiency for 2, 4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP) with rate constant of 0.0046 min−1 in the visible region. Further the nanostructure was able to serve as a selective fluorophore for sensing of Picric acid portraying more than 95% of fluorescence quenching when the concentration of PA is 10–4 M. Theoretical calculations indicate the interaction of organic pollutants with the nanostructure and reveal that both picric acid (− 66.21 kcal/mol) and 2,4-DCP (− 12.31 kcal/mol) possess more negative binding energy values demonstrating a strong interaction of both with the nanostructure, making it suitable for the degradation as well as sensing of organic pollutants. Abstract: The study comprehensively reviews previous research work in the domain of 'Organizational Virtuousness' (OV) using bibliometric and content analysis. It aims to provide insights into what is known about the field and where future research should be directed. As many as 193 published research articles during the last two decades (2004–2022) were retrieved from the Scopus database. These articles were thoroughly studied and then examined using VOSviewer and the Biblioshiny package of R software for bibliometric insights. The findings of the analysis have pinpointed the most influential journals, authors, and keywords and discovered seven research clusters. Abstract: Background: Since motherhood is one of the most important roles in the life of any women and needs utmost priority in dealing with the delivery time, so the study was conducted with the aim to explore data related to antenatal check-ups and associated barriers for not availing the services and the reasons for the health facility preferred (Govt. or Private). for which a semi structured, pretested interview schedule was administered to all the study subjects for obtaining the relevant details.Subjects and Method: The community based cross sectional study was carried out in Palam area of west Delhi from January to December 2016 with a sample size was of 250 and analysis was done using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS version 20). The independent variables under study were social demographic characteristics, while dependent variables were the different reasons cited for preferring home delivery by the study subjects.Results: Among the women interviewed, 60.8% women preferred a Govt. health care facility for antenatal services, 14.4% visited only private health care facility for complete antenatal services whereas 22.4% were those who availed antenatal service from both Government as well as Private health care. Nearly two-third (65.2%) of the deliveries took place in Government facility, whereas around 25% preferred private facility for the delivery and remaining 10% were home deliveries.Conclusion: The reasons need to be explored by systematic continuous monitoring and supervision of services including periodic beneficiaries view point on services being provided, re-orientation of service providers and counselling of pregnant women in order to achieve hundred percent institutional deliveries or by skilled birth attendant.Keywords: barriers, facilitators, institutional delivery.Correspondence: Devendra Kumar, Assistant Professor, Department of Community Medicine, Autonomous State Medical College, Firozabad, Uttar Pradesh, India.
