Electrical pulsed discharge plasma produces various powerful oxidizing agents, such as hydroxyl radicals and ozone, which have high oxidation potential. These species play an important role in the decomposition of persistent organic compounds in wastewater. Because highly concentrated oxidants are directly produced inside the plasma, plasma realizes high-speed wastewater treatment without pretreatment of samples, such as pH adjustment. The pulsed discharge plasma generated over the water surface and inside bubbles is highlighted as a highly efficient method for plasma generation and radical supply into wastewater. In this paper, the physical and chemical properties of the discharge plasma generated over a water surface are described. The decomposition of persistent organic compounds dissolved in wastewater, such as 1,4-dioxane, formic acid, and dichloromethane, by plasma discharge is demonstrated, and their mechanisms are discussed. These persistent compounds, which have strong toxicity and stability, can be efficiently decomposed and removed quickly from solutions by plasma treatment. Furthermore, the treatment of nutrient solutions used in hydroponic systems for plant cultivation is also introduced as a novel application of plasma, and the effects of bacterial inactivation, decomposition of allelochemicals, and improvement in plant growth by plasma are demonstrated.

A compact electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) ion source with all permanent magnet has been developed for basic experiments and ion implantation with various ion species at National Institute of Radiological Sciences (NIRS). Although the present Kei2-type ion sources are dedicated for the high-energy carbon-ion radiotherapy, a future ion source is expected: 1) production of carbon-ion for medical use, 2) production of various ions with a charge-to-mass ratio of 1/3 for the existed linac injector, and 3) low cost for modification from the Kei2-type. A prototype compact ECR ion source, named Kei3, based on Kei2 has been developed to correspond to produce various ions. Figure 1 shows schematic drawing of Kei3 source. The Kei3 has an outer diameter of 280 mm and a length of 1120 mm. Kei3 consists of upstream vacuum chamber, permanent magnets and plasma chamber, and downstream vacuum chamber with extraction system. The magnetic field was copied from Kei2. As a results of beam tests, we obtained maximum beam current of C4+, N5+, O6+ and Ne7+ were 565 μA, 185 μA, 99 μA and 50.5 μA, respectively. In order to increase a beam current of heavy ion such as argon, we modify the microwave injection. The waveguide was made 20 mm longer from original design and the tip of waveguide was set to the mirror peak of injection side. Figure 2 shows charge state distributions (CSD) of Argon. High-energy carbon-ion radiotherapy is being carried out at Heavy Ion Medical Accelerator in Chiba (HIMAC). Over 11000 cancer patients have been treated with carbon beams having energies of between 56-430 MeV/u since 1994. At present, multi ion irradiation method by various ion species is being studied for optimization of LET and dose distribution. An ion source has to produce the helium, carbon, oxygen and neon at pulse by pulse for this method. Requirement currents for He²+, C²+, O³+ and Ne⁴+ are 500, 150, 230 and 300 eµA, respectively. We obtained beam current of 482, 151, and 270 eµA for He²⁺, C²⁺ and O³⁺ with mixed helium and CO² gases under the extraction voltage of 27 kV. Beam current of 27 and 15 eµA for C⁵+ and O⁷+ ions were also obtained in this time. He²⁺ beam include full striped ion such as C⁶+, N⁷+ and O⁸+. We have to increase the purity of He²+ beam. The gas feed system was modified for making pulsed gas by using a solenoid valve for switching different gas.
