- Abstract
The goal of the present paper is to observe the beginning of the Theological Seminary of the Union of Latvian Baptist Churches in 1922 and its work up to 1940. Attention is paid to the historical context, in which Theological Seminary was established. The Idea about the establishing of a theological institution for Latvian Baptist Churches emerged in the beginning of 20th century. Both Latvian Baptists in Latvia and in the United States of America and Brazil supported this intention. But due to financial and political reasons it was not possible. First World War delayed the realization of this goal even more until with the help of British, Canadian, and American Baptists it became possible as early as 1922. Crucial role in establishing of Theological Seminary played its first director John Alexander Frey who led Seminary work from 1922 to 1930. J.A. Frey was succeeded by John Riss who led Seminary work until 1940. In the paper attention is also paid to the Academic Staff, students, study content, publishing work, partnerships with supporting organizations in Latvia and abroad, and the role and importance of Theological Seminary in the life and ministry of Latvian Baptist churches before and after 1940. The history of American philosophy and religion from 1775 to 1850 largely centers around the reactions to Old Light Calvinism and the variations of it introduced by Hopkins and Emmons. During this period, Princeton Theological Seminary and Western Reserve College at Hudson, Ohio, remained the bastions of Calvinism. The actual orthodoxy of the day were the faculty at Princeton Seminary and Western Reserve College. The Oberlin philosophers are prime examples of thinkers united in a thorough critique of Calvinistic determinism, while at the same time vigorously disagreeing among themselves. The idea of human agency involved makes sense of “could have done otherwise” and so provides the framework for accountability. Mahan’s arguments that the determinist cannot make sense of accountability or God’s fairness are standard arguments and have carried great weight.

In 2016, the Block Museum, Northwestern University, was planning an exhibit “Paint the Eyes Softer” on portraits attached to mummies from Roman-era Egypt. These portraits are especially important because few other paintings have survived from the Greco-Roman tradition. Perhaps only 100 portraits remain attached to their mummies, serendipity provided an example amidst Northwestern’s campus, at Garrett Evangelical Theological Seminary and this mummy became the exhibit’s centerpiece. The mummy required conservation, and Computed Tomography (CT) was used to investigate subsurface deterioration and to reveal details of the encased person and items within the wrappings. CT provides a 3D map of how absorbing each reconstructed volume element is but not the identity of the material(s) producing the contrast, and in situ position-resolved x-ray diffraction at the Advanced Photon Source identified different objects within the mummy. This talk covers the provenance of Hawara Portrait Mummy Four, what CT tells us about the person and object enclosed and what secrets x-ray diffraction reveals.

After Poland regained its independence in 1918, the Polish Roman Catholic Church needed to be reunited, so that thoroughly educated priests could be deployed to work in the newly established dioceses. The system of teaching had to be reorganized and this issue was finally regulated by the 1925 Concordat which guaranteed the possibility of creating a seminary in each diocese. A special situation took place in Krakow, where in the 1920s, in addition to the existing diocesan seminary, the Częstochowa Seminary and the Silesian Seminary were located. The article outlines the circumstances in which the seats of these institutions were established outside home dioceses and draws attention to the cultural context of the events of that time, whose material reflection remains as the two modernist buildings preserved in the center of Krakow., Po odzyskaniu przez Polskę niepodległości w 1918 r. Kościół katolicki wymagał zespolenia, a w nowo powołanych diecezjach mieli pracować gruntownie wykształceni duchowni.

The article discusses one of the peculiarities of the Russian seminary versifying – the practice of borrowing from other poems. Based on the materials of printed editions and manuscripts of the Tver Theological Seminary, the author of the article shows that in the second half of the 18th century, when composing occasional poetry, seminarians regularly turned to borrowing from earlier school essays and gives examples of various borrowing methods.

A deep and detailed investigation of biographies of historical figures is facilitated by a special historical discipline - prosopography, which is also one of the methods of historical and biographical research. Today, stating the need to study and informing the public about the lives of the prominent figures of the Church of Christ restore the historical memory of our people, we have to remember those who, in the various historical periods of development of our Church and state, have remained the light of true Christianity and science. Archimandrite Ambrose (Lototsky) is an outstanding beacon of the Church of Christ. He started the thorny path of a scientist and a clergyman in an ancient unit of spiritual education in Volyn – the Volyn Theological Seminary, which at the time of his studies functioned in Ostroh. After completing his studies and receiving his Master of Divinity degree from the Kyiv Theological Academy, he returns to teaching at his native seminary, where he receives teaching, inspector and librarian positions. Through his successful scientific, ecclesiastical and administrative activities, he has been included in the cohort of prominent alumni of the Volyn Theological Seminary. Continuing a series of studies of biographical data of prominent graduates of the ancient Volyn Theological Seminary, this article attempts to reconstruct, on the basis of sources, fragments of the biography of Archimandrite Ambrose (Lototsky), a prominent graduate of Volyn Theological Seminary. The source of the research is the memoirs of his contemporaries, as well as articles published on the pages of Volyn Diocesan News. The analysis of these sources makes it possible to compile as much as possible the prosopographic portrait of Archimandrite Ambrose (Lototsky). The facts of the biography characterize Archimandrite Ambrose as a brilliant scholar who made a significant contribution to the development of church history and local history.

In the concluding chapter of 100 Years of Happiness: Insights and Findings from the Experts, a book that considers what constitutes a happy life from perspectives of distinguished philosophers, economists, psychologists, and others who wrote on the nature of happiness over the course of the past century, pastoral theologians Donald Capps and Nathan Carlin (Carlin and Capps 2012) venture to offer their own reflections on the keys to a happy life. Don’s list initially features the biblically perfect number of seven keys to happiness. On further reflection, however, he finds himself drawn to adding two more, hinting perhaps that he is an especially happy person, for a grand total of nine, in his words, “Things That MakeMe Happy” (pp. 186–187). In this memorial essay, we draw on Don’s keys to happiness to frame a narrative of his life and his impact on countless other lives, including our own. Though Don would not have assumed that others’ lists of key factors for happiness would mirror in any way his own, he likely would hope that in considering his keys others might be inspired to articulate theirs. Adoniram Judson’s life and work have long been the subject of popular and scholarly interest, but the intellectual and exegetical background for his Burmese Bible translation has not been closely studied. This background was the biblical studies movement in New England, which began in the early nineteenth century and flourished before declining and eventually disappearing by about 1870. The opposing New England orthodox Calvinist and liberal Unitarian schools were equally involved in the movement. Judson was an early product of Andover Theological Seminary, the center for orthodox Calvinism in New England. From 1816 to 1840 Judson translated the Bible into Burmese and his references to the scholarly works he used, along with the text-critical and interpretive decisions in his Bible translation, identify him as an ongoing participant in the New England biblical studies movement. This scholarly background helps us understand interpretive decisions in the Judson Bible, which is still the main Burmese version used by Protestants in Myanmar.

Alexander Crummell's application to enter the General Theological Seminary in 1839 was problematic for the Episcopal Church. Admitting the African American abolitionist would have exacerbated divisions over slavery within a denomination still recovering from the American Revolution and the Second Great Awakening. The Church's increasing financial dependence on its upper-class members was a further complication. In Northern states the social elite supported anti-abolitionist violence, whilst in the South support for the Church came predominantly from slaveholders, who opposed any form of abolitionism. In order to safeguard the Episcopal Church's future, the denomination had to reject Crummell's application.

The article focuses on the pedagogical component in the content of Pastoral Theology in the Ukrainian educational institutions of the Orthodox Church, which were included in the system of religious education of the Russian Empire at the beginning of the nineteenth century – at the end of the 1860's. Basing on the studied works “On Positions of Parish Presbyters” by the bishop of the Smolensk Parfenii and the Archbishop of Mogilev, Georgii (Konyskyi), “Letters on Positions of Sacred Rank” by Olexandr Sturdza, “Pastoral Theology” by Archimandrite Anthonii (Amfiteatrov), as well as programs, lecture notes and lecture reviews of lecturers of theological seminaries and the Kiev Theological Academy it has been established that much attention at classes on Pastoral Theology was paid to the preparation of future priests for the religious and moral upbringing of parishioners. The main forms and methods of teaching Pastoral Theology have been presented on the basis of the analysis of archival materials, historical, pedagogical literature. Attention is drawn to the widespread dissemination in the seminaries of rote learning and text dictating, despite the prohibition of such methods by the 1814 Statute. The quality of teaching and staffing of this subject in the secondary and higher Ukrainian educational institutions of the Orthodox Church in the period under research. It has been proved that Pastoral Theology in seminaries was on an equal footing with other branches of theology: teachers understood its great importance for future presbyters and paid much attention to the subject as distinct from the Kiev Theological Academy.

Over the past couple of decades, the media and popular culture have been increasingly interested in members of the LDS Church, its leadership, and its practices. With all of this recent interest, it is possible that a religious studies librarian at an institution of higher education or at a theological seminary could conceivably receive an occasional query regarding Mormonism, either out of popular culture curiosity or for academic investigation. This essay will review major sources in this growing field for any who wish to either assist patrons in comparative religion projects related to Mormonism, develop a working collection in Mormon studies, or both.

During Princeton Theological Seminary’s 2018 conference on currents, perspectives, and methodologies in world Christianity, organizers invited doctoral students to present short abstracts on their dissertation projects. Their research offers us a window into the future of world Christianity as an academic field. This article reviews a sample of the presented projects, exploring what new questions, methods, and patterns of thought are animating the next generation of world Christianity scholars, including (1) a new sensitivity to the bricolaged nature of culture in a globalized and postmodern era, (2) an orientation toward contemporary concerns in the humanities and social sciences, and (3) increased experimentation with multiple methods and disciplinary perspectives.

Almost everyone has heard of the deadly terror group Boko Haram, which began to gain world attention in 2009. Their impact on northeastern Nigeria has been devastating: lives lost and disrupted, properties destroyed, culture and history eradicated by violence. Though they no longer hold territory, in 2014-15 Boko Haram controlled an area the size of Belgium, and also carried out multiple violent attacks in surrounding areas. The Northeastern Nigeria Baptist Digital History Project was begun to help affected Baptist churches in three northeastern states which suffered invasion, many of them with devastated and scattered congregations and damaged or destroyed buildings, recover the dignity of their history through researching, locating, digitizing, and indexing historical documents related to their founding and growth. Original impetus for the project, headquartered in the Ibrahim Danin Library of Baptist Theological Seminary, Kaduna (located outside the Boko Haram sphere of influence) was the discovery of a trove of forty-year-old, handwritten working files created by missionaries present at the founding of many of the earliest Baptist churches in the area. Other primary materials already held by the Library contain clues to interpreting these records, and are also being digitized for access by scholars and researchers.

This research discusses the pastoral leadership of Jesus Christ as written in the Bible to be applied in the Pelita Dunia Theological Seminary. So that every graduate produced can understand and practice correct pastoral leadership in accordance with the teachings and actions of Jesus Christ. This study uses a qualitative approach that combines a literature review with the results of interviews with several alumni. Through this research, information was obtained that Jesus' pastoral leadership based on the explanations in the Gospels is clearly visible in three ways, as Jesus' pastoral leadership carries out God's vision and that means that every pastor also carries out God's vision, Jesus' pastoral leadership reaches out to the lost and improves relationships and that means every pastor also reaches out to the lost congregation and mends broken relationship with God, and pastoral leadership Jesus disciplines and sends and that means every pastor disciplines and sends the congregation to preach the gospel. In addition, this study also concluded that Pelita Dunia Theological Seminary should include and teach Pastoral Leadership to every student in order to produce graduates who can serve like Jesus.

This forum presents the written text (with added introduction) of remarks given at the installation of Mai-Anh Le Tran as academic dean at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary. Naming the “colonial design” (Jennings) buttressing contemporary theological education, Tran wonders how the cultivation of educational imagination might invigorate a vibrant and vital place-based curriculum for theological discovery and formation that does not anesthetize, but rather awakens our full, unfinished selves for sense-filled meaning-making and “utopian social dreaming” for the transformative art of religious leadership in changing and challenging times.

The article characterizes the sources for studying the history of the Orthodox Church and theological education. Particular attention is paid to the analysis of written sources reflecting the development of the Kostroma Theological Seminary over a long historical period. The main attention is paid to the study of the Orthodox periodicals, reflecting the charitable activities of the KTS in the late XIX – early. XX centuries. The research was carried out on the basis of the analysis of the content of the most famous periodical of that time — "Kostroma Diocesan Gazette", which came out in 1885–1917. A qualitative description of the activities of the charitable "Society for Aid to Needy Students in the Kostroma Theological Seminary" (1899–1917) has been carried out. The reports of the Society, published on the pages of this periodical, have been subjected to a thorough comparative analysis. They contain valuable factual and statistical data characterizing the peculiarities of the charitable activities of the theological seminary, the largest educational institution at that time. This article is one of the last scientific works of the author.

It is no doubt that the spread of good news about the human’s savior Lord — Jesus Christ is the most important mission for all of the Christians in the World. However, the old model of planting another church from the mother one tends to be phased out. There is a need to set up a novel evangelism model for our Hong Kong local churches in the 21st century. At the same time, as the old pastors of local churches gradually retired, there is also a need to cultivate our next young and energetic church leadership. This author proposes that through the research of the model for Christian/non-Christian Israel visiting and the associated spiritual revival courses, new church leadership can be found and established. Indeed, the aim of these spiritual revival courses may lead some of the Christian Israel visitors willing to apply for the theological seminary and hence become future church leaders. Actually, this author also discovers that the novel evangelism model should program for the minority population groups in Hong Kong. Thus, there will be a request to extend the cultural and literature course (both in Taiwan Chinese and English) for our seminary colleges. Then these theological courses will become even complete for the preparation of the Hong Kong local churches’ role in the evangelism of after the pasted 20th century.

Jeff Grant is a convicted white-collar offender who abused his position as an attorney in New York. After his release from prison, he founded a white-collar community called Progressive Prison Ministries. One of the convicts who joined the community was Jacqueline Polverari who had committed mortgage fraud as described earlier in this book. The disbarred attorney Grant earned the master of divinity degree from Union Theological Seminary in the City of New York, with a focus on Christian social ethics before he founded the community. Progressive Prison Ministries in Greenwich, Connecticut offer an online white-collar, non-violent support group. They hold their meetings on Monday evenings, 7:00 pm to 8:15 pm Eastern time, where white-collar offenders talk about life, forgiveness, coping with the consequences, and moving beyond the experience.

The impact of the theology of Dirk Postma on Reformed Hermeneutics: At the 150th commemoration of the founding of the Theological Seminary of the Reformed Churches of South-Africa, this article explores the specific historical origins and characteristics of Reformed Hermeneutics. By determining the rules of exegesis, Reformed Hermeneutics indeed has a fundamental influence on the development of Reformed Theology. The research indicates that the theological views of Dirk Postma lay at the heart of Reformed Hermeneutics. His views can further be traced to those of Aegidius Francken, a product of the Nadere Reformatie . An analysis of two recent publications outlining Reformed Hermeneutics indicates that the same hermeneutical principles that Dirk Postma upheld, still hold sway in Reformed Theology today. These principles are outlined and are put forward as standard for the future development of Reformed Theology.

AN ANALYSIS AND RESPONSE TO THE FEAR OF EVIL SPIRITUAL FORCES AMONG KAMBA CHRISTIANS IN THE LIGHT OF BIBLICAL AND ELLEN G. WHITE TEACHINGS by Joseph Mutune Ndisya Adviser: Bruce L. Bauer ABSTRACT OF GRADUATE STUDENT RESEARCH DissertationOF GRADUATE STUDENT RESEARCH Dissertation Andrews University Seventh-day Adventist Theological Seminary Title: AN ANALYSIS AND RESPONSE TO THE FEAR OF EVIL SPIRITUAL FORCES AMONG KAMBA CHRISTIANS IN THE LIGHT OF BIBLICAL AND ELLEN G. WHITE TEACHINGS Name of researcher: Joseph Mutune Ndisya Name and degree of faculty adviser: Bruce L. Bauer, D.Miss. Date completed: April 2015 This research aimed to discover whether there are any reasons from the Scriptures and writings of Ellen G. White regarding fear of evil spiritual forces. Thus research aims to understand the historical, cultural and religious reasons Kamba Christians frequently live in fear and dual allegiance. Biblical solutions will be suggested to permanently eliminate that fear. Fear is often so great that born-again Christians carry protective devices and practices which they believe will ward off the invading evil spiritual forces. The Old Testament writings were examined to see how God wanted His people to relate to any evil power. The Old Testament teachings on such powers were examined, as were God’s attitudes towards the people who used evil spiritual powers. Selected New Testament writings were examined to see how Jesus, the disciples, and Paul dealt with evil spiritual powers. The writings of Ellen G. White were also examined to note how her writings explain the workings of evil spiritual powers. The Kamba worldview was also examined to note its contribution. It was found that there were no biblical or Ellen G. White writings that justify the fear of evil spiritual powers. According to the Kamba worldview, however, it was found that a Christian must replace his or her worldview with a Bible-based worldview. One has to glean critically whether there is justification for any Christian to carry in his/her pocket a device from satanic powers to ward off evil spiritual powers sent to the Christian by an evil satanic person and after that make a concluding determination on whether there is any reason to fear evil spiritual powers. Taking into account the actual problems of time, the article presents materials related to the history of the architectural complex of the Greek Catholic theological seminary in Lviv. The research is based on the works of famous Ukrainian and Polish scholars, archival documents, maps of Lviv and graphic works of graphic artists of the nineteenth century which are stored primarily in the funds of the Lviv National Scientific Library of Ukraine named after V. Stefanyk. The plans of the side building of the Greek Catholic Seminary in Lviv is introduced in a scientific revolution with rooms for the economist, cook and services, which was prepared by a well-known in Galicia builder of the first half of the nineteenth century — Yuriy Glogovsky in 1826 and 1828. Today they is located in the Central State Historical Archives of Lviv city. The plans best reflects the part of the interior of a seminar house which today has very little information. Being the only known source of this kind, the documents is analyzed in details. The article separately gives the reason for their appearance. In addition, all the premises that underwent reorganization over a period of two years were examined in detail. This made it possible to show the needs of those for whom they were intended, the general direction and nature of the work of the Construction Directorate. It was emphasized that the legacy of Y. Glogovsky is a powerful base for studying the architecture of Lviv in the first half of the nineteenth century, her history. Theological seminary ,Philosophy ,Theology - Abstract
Theological educational institutions appeared in Russia in the reign of Peter I. In the second half of the 19th century, these were already established schools of theological education and upbringing. In 20 years of reforming theological schools in Tambov department, authoritative bishops arrived, having a great influence on church life not only in Tambov Governorate, but also in Russian state. The first in this series is Saint Theophan the Recluse. During this period the archpastors of Tambov Land created the conditions for the seminary development. This concerned the educational process and spiritual and moral education. Their care was manifested in the construction of theological school and new knowledge. Sufficient attention was also paid to economic issues. Concern for seminarians was not fake, expressed in the daily relentless care for their organization. For its turn, the Tambov eparchy showed concern for the organization of male and female monasteries, the parochial gymnasium, and other issues of the eparchy’s life.

This article presents editions of two massartu lists from the Eanna-temple in Uruk now housed in the Yale Babylonian Collection and in the Princeton Theological Seminary. Not only are NCBT 660 and PTS 2232 among the very few completely preserved examples of such lists, they also belong to the earliest known specimens of their genre, dating to the third (602/1 BCE) and first (604/3 BCE) year of Nebuchadnezzar II. These texts are valuable additions to the rather sparse dossier containing information on the Eanna cult during the formative phase of the Neo-Babylonian Empire; moreover, they are related to a text that concerns Nabonidus’s cultic reforms in the Eanna.
