This study aims to determine the prevalence of fluoroquinolone resistance of Ureaplasma biovars and serovars isolated from urogenital clinical samples and determine the underlying molecular mechanism for quinolone resistance for all resistant isolates. Of 105 samples confirmed as positive for U . urealyticum / U . parvum , 85 were resistant to quinolones by the Mycoplasma–IST2 kit. However, only 43 out of 85 quinolone resistant isolates had amino acid substitutions in GyrA, GyrB, ParC and ParE proteins underlining that this assay have mis-identified as fluoroquinolone resistant 42 isolates. The known ParC E87K and ParC S83L mutations were found in 1 and 10 isolates, respectively. An original mutation of ureaplasmal ParC (E87Q, 1 isolate) was found. Furthermore, we found a ParE R448K mutation in one isolate, already described. Among the additional alterations detected, the most prevalent mutation found was L176F in GyrA protein in 18 isolates with single infection and in 3 isolates with mixed ureaplasma infections. Mutations in GyrB (E502Q, 4 isolates), ParE (Q412K, Q412P, Q412T, 3 independent isolates), whose role is unknown, were also found. Other sporadic mutations in the four genes were identified. This investigation is the result of monitoring the data for molecular fluoroquinone resistance in Ureaplasma spp. in Italy. Salmonellosis remains an important cause of diarrheal illness in humans in São Paulo State, Brazil. In this study were identified 3554 Salmonella isolates from human infections, during the period 1996-2003. Among 68 different serovars determined, S. Enteritidis was the most frequent one in gastrointestinal and extra-intestinal infections accounting for 67.4% of all isolates. S. Typhimurium and S. enterica subsp. enterica (4,5,12:i:-) were most frequently isolated from children aged < 1-4 year-old, in contrast, people with S. Enteritidis infections were most likely to be 20-50 year-old. In our geographic area the continued laboratorial surveillance of salmonellosis, including serotyping, has showed the trends in Salmonella serovars causing infections in humans throughout the time.A salmonelose permanece uma importante causa de doença diarréica em humanos no Estado de São Paulo, Brasil. Nesse estudo foram identificados 3554 isolados de Salmonella de infecções humanas, durante o período 1996-2003. Entre os 68 diferentes sorovares determinados, S. Enteritidis foi predominante em infecções gastrointestinais e extra-intestinais, responsável por 67.4% de todos os isolados. S. Typhimurium e S. enterica subsp. enterica (4,5,12:i:-) foram mais freqüentemente isolados de crianças com idade de < 1 a 4 anos, em contraste, infecções por S. Enteritidis foram predominantes em pessoas entre 20 e 50 anos. A contínua vigilância laboratorial das salmoneloses, incluindo a sorotipagem, tem evidenciado os sorovares de Salmonella causando infecções humanas em nossa área geográfica ao longo do tempo.

Most leptospiral infections in horses are asymptomatic; however, acute disease manifestations as well as reproductive failure and recurrent uveitis have been reported. In South Africa, the epidemiology of the disease in horses is not well documented. A serosurvey to determine what serovars were present in horses from Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal and Western Cape Provinces and to get an estimate of the seroprevalence of leptospirosis was carried out from January 2013 until April 2014 with the assistance of four large equine hospitals located in these provinces. Furthermore, associations between potential risk factors and both seropositive horses to the predominant serovar Bratislava and to Leptospira spp. were statistically evaluated using univariate analysis and multivariable logistic regression models. A total of 663 horse sera were collected and tested against a panel of 24 leptospiral serovars using the microscopic agglutination test. The most predominant serovars in Gauteng were Bratislava [32%, 95% CI: 29–35%]; Djasiman [10.4%, 95% CI: 8–12%] and Arborea [8.9%, 95% CI: 7–11%], in the Western Cape Province, Bratislava [27.35%, 95% CI: 23–32]; Djasiman [15.4%, 95% CI: 12–19%] and Arborea [14.5%, 95% CI: 11–18%] and in KwaZulu-Natal, Bratislava [39.4%, 95% CI: 34–44%]; Arborea [9.6%, 95% CI: 7–13%]; and Tarassovi [7.7%, 95% CI: 5–10%] respectively. Twenty one serovars representing 17 serogroups were detected with serovar Bratislava being the most serodominant. The apparent prevalence to one or more serovars of Leptospira spp. at a serum dilution of 1:100 in Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal and Western Cape Provinces were 49%; 37% and 32% respectively. The true prevalence was calculated for each province taking into account the clustering effect during the sampling and was found to be between 24 and 74% in Gauteng; 26–39% in the Western Cape and 20–54% in KwaZulu-Natal. Nooitgedacht (South African horse breed) horses were found to be at greater risk of being seropositive to both serovar Bratislava (OR = 5.08) and Leptospira spp. (OR = 6.3). Similarly, horses residing on properties with forestry in the vicinity were found to be at greater risk of being seropositive to both serovar Bratislava (OR = 9.3) and Leptospira spp. (OR = 5.2). This study has shown that a high proportion of horses in South Africa are exposed to a wide range of serovars, inferring a complex epidemiology. Increases in foodborne disease outbreaks associated with fresh produce have necessitated the need to identify potential sources of microbial contamination in produce and agricultural environments. The present study evaluated Salmonella prevalence and serovar diversity in fruit (225), water (140) and surface (126) samples, from three commercial farms and associated packhouses, located in different farming regions in South Africa. Fruit and water samples were collected from both orchards and packhouses, while surface samples were collected from conveyer belts and hands of packhouse employees. Salmonella was detected in 26 of the 491 (5.3%) samples. Environmental samples (water and surfaces) recorded a slightly higher proportion (3.1%; 15/491) of positive samples compared to fruit samples (2.2%; 11/491). Salmonella was not detected on employee hands and river water samples. A total of 263 Salmonella isolates were obtained from the 26 positive samples by standard culture methods, preliminarily identified through matrix-assisted laser desorption ionisation-time of flight mass spectroscopy (MALDI-TOF MS) and API 20E, and confirmed by invA gene. Of the 39 representative isolates serotyped the serovars Muenchen (33.3%), Typhimurium (30.8%), Heidelberg (20.5%), Bsilla (7.7%), Salmonella subspecies IIb: 17: r: z (5.1%) and one untypable strain were identified. Most samples had multiple serovars with orchard water form one site recording the highest serovar diversity (4 serovars). Salmonella is a Gram-negative bacterium responsible for salmonellosis, a disease transmitted by the consumption of contaminated poultry products such as eggs and raw chicken meat. The Salmonella serovars present on the surface of eggs marketed in Ibague city are currently unknown. To address this issue, an observational crosssectional study was designed to estimate Salmonella spp. prevalence on the surface of eggs sold in Ibague city from January - August 2014. A total of 1,705 eggs were collected from stores and supermarkets, and 341 samples (pools of five eggs each) were processed for Salmonella spp. isolation, followed by serotyping and typing by multiple PCR. Salmonella spp. prevalence in egg surface was 2.93%, and S. Enteritidis and S. Paratyphi B were the main serotypes present. S. Enteritidis and S. Paratyphi B were correctly identified by three multiplex PCR directed to amplifly the rfB and wzX, fliC and fljB genes for serogroup and serovar identification, respectively. The frequency of cleaning and disinfection (OR= 19,8), the presence of long nails (OR=5,46) and storage temperature (OR=10,05) were identified as potential risk factors for Salmonella spp. contamination at the market place. It is concluded that S. Enteritidis and S. Paratyphi B, two potential human pathogens, were isolated from the surface of eggs marketed in Ibague city, and multiplex PCR-based typing correlated well with the conventional serotyping in identifying those serovars. A total of 296 Shigella spp. were received from State Public Health Laboratories, during the period from 1999 to 2004, by National Reference Laboratory for Cholera and Enteric Diseases (NRLCED) - IOC/Fiocruz, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The frequency of Shigella spp. was: S. flexneri (52.7%), S. sonnei (44.2%), S. boydii (2.3%), and S. dysenteriae (0.6%). The most frequent S. flexneri serovars were 2a and 1b. The highest incidence rates of Shigella isolation were observed in the Southeast (39%) and Northeast (34%) regions and the lowest rate in the South (3%) of Brazil. Strains were further analyzed for antimicrobial susceptibility by disk diffusion method as part of a surveillance program on antimicrobial resistance. The highest rates of antimicrobial resistance were to trimethoprim-sulfamethozaxole (90%), tetracycline (88%), ampicillin (56%), and chloramphenicol (35%). The patterns of antimicrobial resistance among Shigella isolates pose a major difficulty in the determination of an appropriate drug for shigellosis treatment. Continuous monitoring of antimicrobial susceptibilities of Shigella spp. through a surveillance system is thus essential for effective therapy and control measures against shigellosis.

Avian salmonellosis is a worldwide problem to the poultry industry, from the point of view of animal health and public health as well. The aim of the present study was to survey the most common Salmonella serovars in commercial breeders or broiler flocks from several regions in Brazil. The results of the present study indicated a high incidence of S enterica subspecies enterica serovar Enteritidis in breeders (57.5%) and broilers flocks (84.0%). The importance of these findings lies in the fact that S. Enteritidis has become the most frequent serovar responsible for foodborne outbreaks and sporadic cases of salmonellosis in humans.

A análise fenotípica de 246 amostras do gênero Listeria isolados de animais portadores e doentes, provenientes de três regiões do país, colecionadas no período de 1971 a 2000, permitiu caracterizar as espécies e sorovares prevalentes. Dentre os animais predominaram os espécimes fecais de bovinos normais (217 amostras, 88,2%), em contraposição aos 29 isolados (11,7%) de Listeria de animais doentes, apresentando comprometimento do sistema nervoso central (15 amostras, 6,0%) e outras localizações sistêmicas (14 amostras, 5,6%). Quanto às espécies e sorovares, predominaram L. innocua 6a e não tipável (140 amsotras, 56,9%) e L.monocytogenes 4a (37 amostras, 15,0) e 4b (22 amostras, 8,9%) principalmente nas fezes de bovinos hígidos e nos animais doentes, L. monocytogenes sorovares 4b (14 amostras, 5,6%) com destaque nos ruminantes e 1a (8 amostras, 3,2%) incidindo nas outras espécies animais (roedores e canídeos) e tendo localizações prevalentes em áreas distintas ao sistema nervoso central.Two hundred fourty-six strains of the genus Listeria were isolated from sick and clinically healthy animals, collected in three different regions of Brazil during 1971-2000. About 88.2% (217 cultures) yielded Listeria species from faecal specimens of healthy cattle and 29 strains (11.7%) were isolated from sick animals: 15 (6.0%) from central nervous system (CNS) and 14(5.6%) were from otherwise sterile sites. Phenotyping techniques were used to characterize the Listeria isolates. The commonest were L. innocua 6a and non-typable (140/56.9%), L. monocytogenes 4a (37/15.0%) and 4b (22/8.9%), originated mainly from stools of healthy cattle. From sick animals the predominant species and serovars were L. monocytogenes 4b (14/5.6%), and the higher incidence was observed in ruminants (12/4.8%) and 8/3.2% of the serovar 1a from other animal species (rodents and canines) mainly isolated from CNS samples.

En Cali, y en Colombia en general, se desconoce la epidemiología de la leptospirosis en ambientes urbanos. Además, el papel del perro en el ciclo de transmisión en dichos ambientes no es claro. Para explorar esta situación, realizamos un estudio serológico en Cali a 197 sueros de perros callejeros durante el 2001 y el 2003, utilizando la prueba de microaglutinación (MAT). En la prueba se incluyeron 7 serovares: Icterohaemorrhagiae, Canicola, Gryppotyphosa, Hardjo cepa Hardjobovis, Pomona, Hardjo cepa Hardjoprajitno y Bratislava aportados por el Instituto Colombiano Agropecuario (ICA) de Tuluá. La prueba se interpretó como positiva por la presencia de una aglutinación ³50% de las leptospiras, con uno o más serovares, en una dilución del suero ³1:100. Encontramos evidencia de infección en el 41,1% de los perros con, al menos, uno de los serovares. La mayor reactividad fue a Icterohaemorrhagiae con 55,6% del total de los seropositivos. Se presentaron 48,1% de coaglutinaciones. No se registraron reacciones contra los serovares Pomona, Hardjo cepa Hardjoprajitno y Bratislava. Estos hallazgos sugieren que el perro callejero es un posible reservorio de leptospira en Cali y resaltan la necesidad de estudiar la epidemiología de la enfermedad en esta ciudad.

Using phenotype techniques, characterization was made to species and serovar of 3,112 strains of Listeria, isolated from different sources of infection such as human (247-7.9%) and animals (239-7.6%), as well as from various routes of infection, including food (2,330-74.8%) and environmental constituents (296-9.5%), all coming from different regions of the country and collected during the period 1971-1997. The following species were recovered in the cultures analysed: L. monocytogenes (774-24.8%), L. innocua (2,269-72.9%), L. seeligeri (37-1.1%), L. welshimeri (22-0.7%), L. grayi (9-0.2%), and L. ivanovii (1-0.03%). L. monocytogenes was represented by ten serovars, the most prevalent being 4b (352-11.3%), 1/2a (162-5.2%), and 1/2b (148-4.7%). The predominant serovar in L. innocua was 6a (2,093-67.2%). Considerations about laboratory methods for diagnosis and epidemiological aspects are presented on the basis of the results obtained.

Aquaculture products can become sources of Salmonella by exposure to contaminated water or through processing practices, thus representing a public health hazard. A study was conducted on Salmonella contamination in aquaculture products sampled from marketplaces and retailers in Shanghai, China. A total of 730 samples (including fish, shellfish, bullfrog, clam, shrimp and others) were obtained from 2006 to 2011. Among them, 217 (29.7%) were positive for Salmonella . Thirty-eight serovars were identified in the 217 Salmonella isolates. The most prevalent were Salmonella Aberdeen (18.4%), S. Wandsworth (12.0%), S . Thompson (9.2%), S . Singapore (5.5%), S . Stanley (4.6%), S . Schwarzengrund (4.6%), S . Hvittingfoss (4.1%) and S . Typhimurium (4.1%). Many resistant isolates were detected, with 69.6% resistant to at least one antimicrobial drug. We observed high resistance to sulfonamides (56.5%), tetracycline (34.1%), streptomycin (28.6%), ampicillin (23.5%) and nalidixic acid (21.2%). Lower levels of resistance were found for gentamicin (3.2%), ciprofloxacin (2.3%), ceftiofur (1.3%), cefotaxime (0.9%), ceftazidime (0.5%) and cefepime (0.5%). A total of 43.3% of the Salmonella isolates were multidrug-resistant and 44 different resistance patterns were found. This study provided data on the prevalence, serovars and antimicrobial resistance of Salmonella from retail aquaculture products in Shanghai, and indicated the need for monitoring programs for microbiologic safety in such projects and for more prudent drug use in aquaculture production in order to reduce the risk of development and spread of antimicrobial resistance. Objective. To evaluate if the use of the 19 Leptospira strains panel suggested by the International Leptospirosis Society of World Health Organization for microagglutination allows confirmation of more cases that the 12 strains panel used in Argentina. Materials and methods. Cross-sectional observational study. We studied 441 serum samples corresponding to Argentinean patients with suspected leptospirosis derived during from July to December, 2009 and from January to October, 2013. Results. The same number of positive samples was obtained using the MAT with the 19 or 12 strains. In six cases a serovar of the expanded collection was presumably infecting, but always coagglutinated with strains of the reduced panel. Conclusion. In Argentina, the diagnosis of leptospirosis by MAT could be made using the reduced 12 strains panel, obtaining the same result in case detection as using the 19 strains panel. Foram caracterizadas antigenicamente amostras de Salmonella isoladas de aves (portadoras e doentes) provenientes de diversas regiões do país durante o período de 1962 a 1991. Nas 2123 culturas analisadas foram reconhecidos 90 sorovares, distribuídos em 14 sorogrupos com predominância dos grupos O:9 (40,0%), O:4 (33,3%), O:7 (10,6%) e O: 3,10 (6,7%). A maior diversidade de sorovares foi reconhecida no sorogrupo O:7 com 22 tipos distintos, secundado por O:4, O:3,10 e O:9, constituídos de 19, 15 e 10 sorotipos, respectivamente. No computo geral, foi determinada a média de 10,8 sorovares isolados por ano. Os sorovares classificados como muito frequentes nos três decênios, representando 65 a 67%, dos isolamentos, foram S. Gallinarum, S. Pullorum, S. Typhimurium, S. Heidelberg, S. Enteritidis e S. Infantis. Considerações de natureza bacteriológica e epidemiológica foram discutidas em relação a alguns dos sorotipos prevalentes.Salmonella strains were isolated from ill and shedding birds in several regions of Brazil between 1962 and 1991. Serotyping of 2123 isolates showed 90 serovars pertaining to 14 serogroups. There was a predominance of groups O:9 (40.0%), O:4 (33.3%), O:7 (10.6%) and O:3,10 (6.7%). Major serovar diversity was found to serogroup O:7 that accounted for 22 different types, followed by serogroups O:4, O:3,10 and O:9 with 19, 15 and 10 serotypes respectively. An average of 10.8 serovars was isolated per year. S. Gallinarum, S. Pullorum, S. Typhimurium, S. Heidelberg, S. Enteritidis and S. Infantis were the most frequent serovars found over the 30 years, representing 65% to 67% of the total of isolates. Bacteriological and epidemiological aspects concerning a number of serotypes are discussed.

This study was aimed at determining virulence-associated genes among Haemophilus parasuis ( H. parasuis ) strains, and supplying for the Kielstein–Rapp–Gabrielson serotyping scheme. The subtractive fragments, obtained through suppression subtractive hybridization and reverse Southern blot hybridization, were found to encode genes representative of 7 different functions. PCR was used to investigate the distribution of these fragments in H. parasuis strains isolated from different infection sites in pigs. Mice challenge was then used to analyze the correlationship between subtractive fragments, infection sites and bacterial virulence. Eight weeks old female BALB/c mice (10 mice/group) were inoculated intraperitoneally with 3.0 × 10 9 CFU suspension (0.5 ml/mouse) of H. parasuis strains in PBS. Results indicated that H. parasuis possessed varied virulence even among the same serovar strains. Transcription units hsdR, hsdS, gpT and ompP2, identified from the subtractive fragments, were uniformly expressed in highly virulent strains, while absent in weakly virulent strains, and demonstrated variable degrees of expression in moderately virulent strains. Moreover, H. parasuis strains, isolated from pericardium and heart blood, were all highly virulent strains, while from nasal cavity and joint were moderately or weakly virulent strains. This study indicated that fragments hsdR, hsdS, gpT and ompP2 were associated with the virulence of H. parasuis . The virulence of H. parasuis strains isolated from different infection sites was different. Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica comprises a number of serovars, many of which pose an epidemiological threat to humans and are a worldwide cause of morbidity and mortality. Most reported food infection outbreaks involve the serovars Salmonella Enteritidis and Salmonella Typhimurium. Rapid identification to determine the primary sources of the bacterial contamination is important to the improvement of public health. In recent years, many DNA-based techniques have been applied to genotype Salmonella. Herein, we report the use of a manual TRS-PCR approach for the differentiation of the Salmonella enterica subspecies enterica serovars in a single-tube assay. One hundred seventy Salmonella strains were examined in this work. These consisted of serovars S. Enteritidis, S. Typhimurium, S. Infantis, S. Virchow, S. Hadar, S. Newport and S. Anatum. Five of the TRS-primers, N(GTG), N(CAC), N(CGG), N(CCG) and N(CTG), perfectly distinguished the S. Enteritidis and S. Typhimurium serovars, and the N(GTG) primer additionally grouped the other five frequently isolated serovars. In our opinion, the TRS-PCR methodology could be recommended for a quick and simple DNA-based test for inter-serovar discrimination of Salmonella strains. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Cloacal swabs from 62 green iguanas ( Iguana iguana), including 47 wild and 15 domestic ones from five parishes of Grenada, were sampled during a 4-month period of January to April 2013 and examined by enrichment and selective culture for the presence of Salmonella spp. Fifty-five per cent of the animals were positive, and eight serovars of Salmonella were isolated. The most common serovar was Rubislaw (58.8%), a serovar found recently in many cane toads in Grenada, followed by Oranienburg (14.7%), a serovar that has been causing serious human disease outbreaks in Japan. Serovar IV:48:g,z51:- (formerly, S. Marina) highly invasive and known for serious infections in children in the United States, constituted 11.8% of the isolates, all of them being from domestic green iguanas. Salmonella Newport, a serovar recently found in a blue land crab in Grenada, comprised 11.8% of the isolates from the green iguanas. The remaining four less frequent serovars included S. Javiana and S. Glostrup. Antimicrobial susceptibility tests conducted by a disc diffusion method against amoxicillin-clavulanic acid, ampicillin, cefotaxime, ceftazidime, ciprofloxacin, enrofloxacin, gentamicin, nalidixic acid, streptomycin, tetracycline and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole showed that drug resistance is minimal, with intermediate susceptibility, mainly to streptomycin, tetracycline and cefotaxime. This is the first report of isolation and antimicrobial susceptibilities of various Salmonella serovars from wild and domestic green iguanas in Grenada, West Indies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This supplement (no. 48) of the White–Kauffmann–Le Minor scheme reports on the characterization of 63 new Salmonella serovars and 25 new variants of previously described Salmonella serovars recognized by the WHO Collaborating Centre for Reference and Research on Salmonella between 2008 and 2010. Forty-four new serovars were assigned to Salmonella enterica subspecies enterica , 12 to subspecies salamae , two to subspecies arizonae , two to subspecies diarizonae and three to subspecies houtenae . Abstract: In this work the prevalence and serovar diversity of Salmonella in various food products including non-thermally processed food and ready-to-eat (RTE) food in Estonia in 2008–2012 are summarized. The findings demonstrate that the overall prevalence of Salmonella in these food categories was low. A total of 260 (0.54%) of 47,927 food samples were found to be positive for Salmonella, the overall prevalence in non-thermally processed food was 0.81% (256/31,576) and in RTE products only 0.02% (4/16,351). Salmonella was most often isolated from raw eggs and products thereof (2.17%, 5/230), followed by raw meat products (0.95%, 207/21,723), RTE mayonnaises (0.90%, 2/221) and raw meat (0.89%, 38/4252). In the raw meat category, Salmonella was most frequently isolated from turkey meat (6.96%, 11 positive samples out of 158), broiler chicken meat (4.00%, 7/175) and from layer hen meat (2.22%, 11/496). Salmonella was isolated in lesser extent from meat preparations (1.91%, 82/4292), minced meat and mechanically separated meat products (0.97%, 100/10,344) and from raw sausages (0.35%, 25/7087). Altogether 24 different serovars were identified among the 260 Salmonella positive samples. Salmonella Typhimurium was the most frequent serovar (26.90% of the positive samples) and it was isolated most commonly in raw food products. The next most frequent serovars were Salmonella Derby (17.50%), Salmonella Enteritidis (8.37%) and Salmonella Newport (7.57%). The only serovars isolated from the Salmonella positive RTE food samples were Salmonella Infantis (two isolates) and S. Enteritidis (two isolates). [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The article provides information on a study which examined the changes in the prevalence and titers of antibodies to Leptospira interrogans in manatees between dry and rainy seasons in a landlocked lake in Tabasco, Mexico. Topics covered include the effect of climate change and disturbance of aquatic ecosystems on fluvial systems in the southern Gulf of Mexico and the reasons environmental and nutrition stress favor pathogen development in host organisms.

Abstract: The aims of this study were to investigate the serotype distribution, genetic relationships and antibiotic resistance of Salmonella from food-producing animals in Shandong province of China in 2009 and 2012. A total of 362 out of 1825 samples from chickens, 53 out of 445 samples from ducks, and 50 out of 692 samples from pigs were positive for Salmonella. Isolates were subjected to serotyping, antibiotic susceptibility testing (15 antibiotics) and pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE). The most common serotypes recovered in the chicken samples were Enteritidis (n=294, 81.2%) and Indiana (n=45, 12.4%). For ducks, Cremieu (n=25, 47.2%), Indiana (n=13, 24.5%) and Typhimurium (n=9, 17%) were frequently isolated. In the pig samples, Derby (n=29, 58%), Typhimurium (n=9, 18%), and Enteritidis (n=6, 12%) were the most common serovars. PFGE results indicated that clonal dissemination of each serovar was prevalent, and that the Salmonella found on the poultry carcasses was caused by cross-contamination in the abattoirs. More than 99% of the Salmonella isolates collected were resistant to at least one antibiotic. The Salmonella resistance rates for 15 antibiotics in 2012 were significantly higher than those in 2009. In 2012, the highest resistance was to nalidixic acid (95.9%), followed by sulphafurazole (78.2%) and ampicillin (72.3%); the lowest levels of resistance were to kanamycin (40.1%) and amikacin (38.7%). Additionally, 41.5% and 42.2% of the Salmonella were resistant to ciprofloxacin and ceftiofur, respectively. Noticeably, 25% of the serovar Enteritidis and all of the serovar Indiana were resistant to at least 10 antibiotics in 2012. We conducted a retrospective study on non-typhoidal Salmonella isolates from patients with diarrhoea in Shanghai, China, 2006–2010. A total of 1484 isolates of 70 Salmonella serovars were recovered from about 18 000 stool specimens. Serovars Enteritidis and Typhimurium were the most prevalent with isolation rates of 27·6% and 25·5%, respectively. The majority (1151, 77·6%) of the isolates were resistant to at least one antimicrobial, and 598 (40·3%) to more than three antimicrobials. Approximately half (50·9%) of the isolates were resistant to nalidixic acid and other resistance rates were sulfisoxazole (47·9%), streptomycin (37·6%), ampicillin (31·3%) and tetracycline (30·5%). Background and objectives: Salmonella is one of the leading causes of food-borne diseases. Increasing occurrence of antimicrobial resistance, especially multidrug-resistance, in Salmonella serovars is a major public health problem worldwide. This study was carried out to detect class I integrons and antibiotic resistance profiles in clinical isolates of Salmonella serovars collected from seven hospitals in Tehran during November 2009 to June 2010. Materials and Methods: Antibiotic susceptibility profile of 19 antibiotics against 58 Salmonella isolates commonly used in humans was determined using disk diffusion assay. Minimum inhibitory concentration against ceftriaxone and ciprofloxacin was studied. PCR assays were used to detect class I integrons. Results: Among 58 Salmonella isolates, 72.4% were Salmonella enterica serovar Enteritidis, 8.7% were Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium and 18.9% were other serovars. Of the total 58 Salmonella serovars, 43 (74.1%) were multidrug- resistant and showed resistance to three or more antibiotic families. Class I integrons were identified in 38 (88.3%) MDR Salmonella isolates. Ciprofloxacin minimum inhibitory concentration ranged between 0.125-2 μg⁄ml for four isolates and other four isolates exhibited resistance to ceftriaxone (MIC 64-256 μg ⁄ml). Conclusion: The high prevalence of class I integrons was seen in our MDR Salmonella isolates and class I integrons might play an important role in the dissemination of antimicrobial resistance determinants.

Objetivo. Determinar la seroprevalencia de Leptospira spp. y los serovares dominantes, en caninos de tres municipios del departamento del Tolima, Colombia. Materiales y métodos. Se realizó un estudio epidemiológico trasversal con 900 caninos localizados en 62 barrios de los tres municipios, de los cuales se obtuvieron muestras de sangre durante los meses de junio, julio y agosto de 2007, que fueron procesadas utilizando la prueba de microaglutinación (MAT). En la prueba se incluyeron 5 serovares: hardjo, pomona, grippotyphosa, canicola, icterohaemorrhagiae y bratislava. La prueba se interpretó como positiva por la presencia de una aglutinación ≥50 % de las leptospiras con uno o más serovares, en una dilución del suero ≥100. Resultados. La seroprevalencia de leptospirosis en la población canina fue del 20.2%. La mayor dominancia fue para los serovares grippotyphosa (82.4%) y pomona (8.2%), observándose una baja reactividad ante canicola e icterohaemorrhagiae, 0.5 y 2.2% respectivamente. Se presentaron coaglutinaciones en el 4.3% de los sueros. La seropositividad presentó diferencias estadísticamente significativas cuando se compararon los resultados por sexo y edad (p=0.038). Conclusiones. Los resultados sugieren que los caninos pueden ser posibles reservorios de la leptospirosis en los tres municipios evaluados, siendo necesario realizar estudios que permitan el aislamiento y tipificación de los serovares prevalentes en las zonas endémicas para orientar las medidas de prevención que eviten el riesgo de transmisión de la enfermedad a la población humana.

Salmonella is an essential food-borne pathogenic microorganism. Humans could get infected by consuming of Salmonella -contaminated foods, especially contaminated meat. In this study, a total of 580 retail meat samples (280 pork, 240 chicken, and 60 goose) were collected from slaughterhouses in Hangzhou to determine the prevalence and antimicrobial susceptibility patterns of Salmonella. Isolates were characterized by serotyping, PFGE (Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis), Polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and antibiotic susceptibility testing. The rates of Salmonella -positive pork, chicken, and goose samples were 21.1% (n = 59), 10.4% (n = 25) and 10.0% (n = 6), respectively. The prevalence of Salmonella was 15.5% in slaughterhouses. Thirteen different Salmonella serovars were identified, and 6 isolates could not be identified. The most commonly prevalent serovars are Salmonella Rissen (S. Rissen) (n = 20, 22.2%), S. Derby (n = 16, 17.8%) and S. Typhimurium (n = 12, 13.3%). The detection rate of the remaining serovars ranged from 1.1%–11.11%. All Derby, Corvallis, and Kentucky strains were from pork. Seventy-two isolates (80.0%) showed drug resistance (DR) to at least one antibiotics, 19 (21.1%) were multi-drug resistant strains, 2 (2.2%) showed seven or more. The detection rate of Trimethoprim/Sulfamethoxazole-resistance (70.0%) was highest, followed by Ampicillin (55.6%). Salmonella resistance was found related to serovar and origin. The positive rates of DR gene sul1 , sul2, sul3, class I integrons and bla TEM were 92.2%, 95.6%, 86.7%, 83.3% and 62.2%, respectively. Fifty-seven different PFGE patterns and 7 main clusters were obtained. Purpose – The aim of this study was to serotype strains of Salmonella isolated from poultry and raw poultry meat from 2006 to 2010 and to correlate the results with data from the Health Department of Parana State. Design/methodology/approach – A total of 1.165 Salmonella spp. strains isolated from commercial broiler breeders and laying hens (cloacal swabs, dragging swabs and faeces) and from one-day-old chicks (liver, spleen and cecum) and 310 strains isolated from raw chicken meat were serotyped between 2006 and 2010. Findings – The results showed a decline in the isolation of S. Enteritidis (SE) of poultry and chicken meat in the studied period. The most prevalent serovar isolated from raw chicken meat was Minnesota (n=73; 23.02%), followed by Mbandaka (n=33; 10.41%) and Enteritidis (n=30; 9.46%). The decrease in frequency of isolation of SE may be related to the broiler breeder hens vaccination and to the National Program for the Reduction of Pathogens of the Brazilian Agriculture Ministry and Food Supply, established in 2003. Leptospirosis is a zoonotic disease with a worldwide distribution, and occurs in tropical, subtropical and temperate zones. Considered to be the most geographically widespred zoono- sis. Leptospirosis has been recognized as an emerging global public health problem because of its increasing incidence in both developing a developed countries. More than 500,000 cases of severe leptospirosis are reported each year, with fatality rates exceeding 10%. The genus Leptospira comprises saprophytic and pathogenic species, isolated from wide range of animal reservoir species. Laboratory diagnosis is complex and not widely available, Selection of the right specimens, tests and correct interpretation of test results are important parameters to provide better patient care. The Leptospira is detected by isolation of organism or demonstration by dark field, silver impregnation and immunodetection; microagglutination and immunofluorescence or amplification of specific fragment of Leptospiral DNA and indirect evidences by detection of antibodies to leptospires. The aim of this study was to give some insights into the prevalence, serovars, phage types, and antibiotic resistances of Salmonella from animal origin in the United Arab Emirates. Data on diagnostic samples from animals ( n = 20,871) examined for Salmonella between 1996 and 2009 were extracted from the databases of the Central Veterinary Research Laboratory in Dubai and from typed strains ( n = 1052) from the Robert Koch Institute, Wernigerode Branch in Germany and analyzed for general and animal-specific trends. Salmonella was isolated from 1,928 (9 %) of the 20,871 samples examined. Among the 1,052 typed strains, most were from camels ( n = 232), falcons ( n = 166), bustards ( n = 101), antelopes ( n = 66), and horses ( n = 63). The predominant serovars were Salmonella Typhimurium (25 %), Salmonella Kentucky (8 %), followed by Salmonella Frintrop (7 %), and Salmonella Hindmarsh (5 %). When analyzed by animal species, the most frequent serovars in camels were Salmonella Frintrop (28 %) and Salmonella Hindmarsh (21 %), in falcons Salmonella Typhimurium (32 %), in bustards Salmonella Kentucky (19 %), in antelopes Salmonella Typhimurium (9 %), and in horses Salmonella Typhimurium (17 %) and S. Kentucky (16 %). Resistance of all typed Salmonella strains ( n = 1052) was most often seen to tetracycline (23 %), streptomycin (22 %), nalidixic acid (18 %), and ampicillin (15 %). Novel Bacillus thuringiensis isolates GS4, GN24 and UP1 were isolated and characterized by determination of serotyping, insecticidal protein by SDS-PAGE, plasmid composition, cry gene content and insect toxicity. Serologically two isolates GS4 and UP1 were allocated to the H3abce which is a new serovar while isolate GN24 was of H3ab type. Isolate GS4 produced flat crystal inclusions while UP1 produced cuboidal crystals. PCR analysis found that both isolates contained cry1 and cry1Ac genes. The major protein bands found of isolate GS4 were of molecular weights 175, 135, 97, 88, 66, 54 and 27 kDa, isolate UP1 were of 85, 60 and 40 kDa and isolate GN24 were of 130, 90, 66 and 45 kDa. Though isolates GS4 and UP1 belonged to a new serovar H3abce, they showed different crystal inclusions and cry gene content. Isolate GS4 was toxic to lepidopteran insect larvae of Helicoverpa armigera but UP1 did not showed any toxicity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: A preliminary epidemiological study of Salmonella contamination in laying-hen flocks was carried out in the regions of Annaba and Eltarf, Algeria, from March to October 2008 and March to November 2009. Our objectives were (i) to estimate the prevalence of infection by Salmonella spp. in seven pooled samples during the hens'' laying period (ii) to identify the serotypes and antimicrobial resistance phenotypes of isolates, and (iii) to characterize the factors that may be related to Salmonella contamination in Algerian henhouses. For this purpose, 18 out of 22 operational laying-hen houses were sampled one to three times during these periods: once at the start of laying (pullets aged 22–31weeks), once in the middle of laying (47–60week) and once at the end of laying prior to depopulation (70–86week). The flocks''Salmonella status was assessed by collecting 2754 environmental samples that were analyzed according to the ISO 6579 method. The antibiotic resistance of Salmonella strains was tested as per the guidelines of the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI). The relationship between each potential risk factor and the Salmonella status of laying-hen flocks was evaluated by calculating the relative risk with 95% confidence intervals. Eight flocks tested positive for Salmonella spp., with a higher prevalence at the end of laying than at either the beginning or middle. Only 19 isolates were recovered from the 2754 samples analyzed and nine different serotypes identified. S. enteritidis (n=4) was the most prevalent serovar, along with S. Kentucky and S. Hadar (n=3), followed by S. Heidelberg, S. Manhattan and S. Virchow (n=2), whereas S. Dublin, S. Typhimurium and S. Albany were found only once. Thirteen isolates were resistant to at least one antimicrobial agent. Of these, six were resistant to at least three different antimicrobial classes. Salmonella serovar Kentucky isolates were resistant to fluoroquinolones with ciprofloxacin MIC≥8mg/L. Abstract: Salmonella is a leading cause of foodborne diseases and the role of ready-to-eat products including plant-derived food is increasingly recognized. The present survey reviewed recent literature on Salmonella-related outbreaks caused by spices and herbs and on the occurrence of Salmonella in these food matrices. Spices and herbs contaminated with Salmonella were responsible for a variety of foodborne outbreaks in Europe and North America. Identified serovars did often not belong to those predominating in human illness. Moreover, in different survey studies, Salmonella belonging to a broad diversity of serovars were found in a variety of spices and herbs. The proportion of Salmonella-positive samples ranged from 0% to 8.4%, albeit detection rates were rather low in most studies. Higher prevalence rates were often obtained with regard to a specific spice or herb type. Due to high desiccation tolerance, Salmonella can survive for an extended period of time in spices and dried herbs. Thus, by the use of untreated spices and herbs for production of foods not subjected to a heat treatment or for seasoning of ready-to-eat products, Salmonella might be introduced and in this way might pose a threat to consumers. A study was undertaken from October 2006 to March 2007 to determine the prevalence and antimicrobial resistance patterns of Salmonella serovars. Liver, mesenteric lymph nodes, intestinal content, and carcass swab samples (each n = 186) were collected from 186 apparently healthy slaughtered cattle at Bahir Dar abattoir. Bacteriological analysis was done according to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO 6579 ). Isolates were serotyped at Agence Française de Securite Sanitaire des Aliments, Cedex, France. Twenty-eight isolates consisting of Salmonella Typhimurium, Salmonella Newport, Salmonella Haifa, Salmonella Heidelberg, Salmonella Infantis, and Salmonella Mishmarhaemek were identified. Salmonella Typhimurium and Salmonella Newport were most frequently isolated while Salmonella Heidelberg and Salmonella Mishmarhaemek were isolated least. Eleven of the 28 (39.3%) were resistant to one or more of the antimicrobials tested. Resistance was shown to ampicillin, chloramphenicol, gentamycin, norfloxacin, polymyxin-B, streptomycin, tetracycline, and trimethoprim. Four of 11 (36.4%) were multiple antimicrobial resistant. All the isolates tested were susceptible to the antimicrobial effects of gentamycin, norfloxacin, and trimethoprim. Eleven, four, and two isolates of the 28 were resistant to streptomycin, tetracycline, and ampicillin, respectively. All isolates of Salmonella Infantis, Salmonella Typhimurium (except one), and Salmonella Mishmarhaemek were susceptible to the tested antimicrobials. One Typhimurium isolate was resistant to chloramphenicol, streptomycin, and tetracycline. Salmonella Haifa was multiply antimicrobial resistant to ampicillin, tetracycline, and streptomycin. All isolates of Salmonella Heidelberg were resistant to streptomycin. Results of this study indicated high level of carcass contamination with antimicrobial-resistant Salmonella serovars which could pose public health risk; suggests need for hygienic slaughtering operations and proper cooking of meat before consumption. Abstract: The presence of Listeria in three milk processing environments as a potential source of milk contamination was assessed. Swab samples (n = 210) taken from milk processing plants were examined. Sample sites included the milk processing equipment, besides areas handling raw and pasteurized milk. The USDA Listeria-selective enrichment procedure was used to process the samples. Forty one (19.52%) Listeria isolates were recovered. The isolates were further subjected to biochemical and genotypic characterization. Out of 41 isolates, 16 (7.62%) were confirmed as Listeria monocytogenes, 2 (0.95%) as L. ivanovii, 19 (9.05%) as L. innocua. 1 (0.48%) as L. seeligeri and 3 (1.43%) as L. grayi. All the L. monocytogenes isolates were positive for the hlyA gene. PCR based serotyping revealed all L. monocytogenes to be of 1/2a, 1/2c, 3a and 3c serovar group. AscI and ApaI restriction analysis yielded four PFGE clusters for 16 L. monocytogenes isolates obtained from raw milk collector, milk silos, buttermilk mixer, cheese and other milk product processor. No predominant PFGE cluster was observed among these L. monocytogenes isolates. The main sources of L. monocytogenes were found to be raw milk collector and milk silos. In the present study L. monocytogenes was isolated from milk and milk products processing plants which could cross-contaminate the processed products and may possess a potential threat to public health. The article presents a study on the prevalence of Salmonella spp. and serovars in the captive exotic species of reptile in New Zealand. The researchers calculated the prevalence of Salmonella spp. assuming that the Salmonella culture was 98 percent specific and 50 percent sensitive. They also compared the prevalence of Salmonella spp. between turtles or chelonians and lizards. They found that the prevalence of Salmonella spp. in exotic reptiles was lower than that reported overseas.

Abstract: Prevention of Salmonella contamination of poultry products requires detailed knowledge of the main sources associated with its presence in the production system. The aims of this study were to determine the main sources of Salmonella contamination in broiler production during growing, to assess the risk factors for Salmonella contamination at the end of the rearing period and to determine the main serovars involved in broiler production systems in Eastern Spain. A total of 65 different broiler houses from different farms were sampled. Each house was sampled at different times during the rearing period. First, when the previous flock was taken to the slaughterhouse, samples of dust, surfaces and previous flock faeces were collected. After cleaning and disinfection (C&D), samples of dust and surfaces were also taken. On the first day of rearing, samples of water, bedding, farming boots, meconiums, delivery-box liners and feed were collected. During rearing, feed samples were taken directly from the truck and from feeders. On slaughter day, samples of dust, surfaces, water, feed and faeces were also collected. Finally, two days after slaughter, carriers (rodents, flies and beetles) were trapped. All samples collected were analysed according to (Annex D) and positive samples were serotyped in accordance with Kauffman–White–Le–Minor technique. Our results showed that all different types of samples collected were contaminated with Salmonella (prevalence ranged between 1.5% and 38.6%). The most contaminated samples related with poultry production were: delivery-box liners (32.0%), faeces samples (31.2%), dust samples (25.0%), farming boots (19.7%) and feed from feeders (16.0%). However, the most important risk factors for Salmonella contamination of the flocks at the end of the rearing period were Salmonella status of the house after cleaning and disinfection, Salmonella status of day-old chick flocks and feed from feeders. Twenty-one different serovars were isolated from the samples analysed. The most prevalent were in decreasing order: Salmonella Enteritidis (52.9%), S. Hadar (17.8%), S. Virchow (8.9%) and S. Ohio (5.4%). The study suggested that there are many sources for Salmonella contamination and persistence in broiler production. Abstract: Leptospirosis is a re-emerging disease of dogs in the United States (U.S.). This paper reports the findings of a retrospective study conducted to determine if seroreactivity to Leptospira microscopic agglutination test (MAT) among dogs in the U.S. clustered in space and time. The study utilized canine sera submitted to a commercial laboratory for leptospiral MAT from January 2000 through December 2007. There were 31,869 serum samples submitted by veterinarians from 3156 zip code locations across the U.S. Results of MAT were considered positive at titers of ≥1:1600. Spatial and spatial-temporal scan statistics were used to identify statistically significant clusters of seroreactivity to Leptospira (overall and individual serovars) using recorded test request dates and locations of the centroid of the zip code reported for each serum sample. There were 2469 positive MAT results with a titer ≥1:1600 to at least one of seven Leptospira serovars. Two relevant spatial clusters of 26.3 and 246.5km radius were identified (P =0.001). The primary cluster was located in the northeastern part of Illinois including Chicago and surrounding areas (232 [14.4%] of 1612 MAT positive; RR=1.95). The secondary cluster covered the central part of Texas (292 [12.62%] of 2314 MAT positive; RR=1.71). Eight space-time clusters of overall MAT positivity were identified (29–335km radius; P =0.001–0.048 and RR=3.98–24.69) that covered different geographic locations for different time points. Spatial and space-time clusters for individual serovars were also identified for six serovars: eight each of Grippotyphosa and Pomona, seven of Bratislava, five of Autumnalis, and three each of Icterohaemorrhagiae and Canicola. In conclusion Leptospira seropositivity in dogs tended to have distinctive clusters in space and space-time. Most of the space-time clusters of overall Leptospira MAT seropositivity were associated with cluster events for individual serovars. Further investigation is warranted to explain individual serovar clusters detected in this study, as a complex interaction of incidental host, environment and reservoir host may be responsible for the occurrence of these serovar clusters. Objective Investigate the diversity of serovars of Haemophilus parasuis (Hps) present in Australian pig herds. Design Nasal swabs were used to obtain multiple isolates of Hps, which were grouped first by genotyping and then by serotyping representative isolates. Procedure Swabs were taken from the nasal cavity of just-weaned healthy pigs from multiparous sows on 12 farms and from post-weaned pigs of multiparous sows on 1 farm. On 5 of the 13 farms, nasal swabs were also obtained from pigs showing clinical signs suggestive of Glässer's disease. On a further 7 farms, nasal swabs were obtained only from pigs with clinical signs suggestive of Glässer's disease. Results A total of 556 Hps isolates were genotyped, and 150 isolates were serotyped. Hps was detected on 19 of the 20 farms, including 2 farms with a long history of freedom from Glässer's disease. Isolates of Hps belonging to serovars regarded as potentially pathogenic were obtained from healthy pigs at weaning on 8 of the 10 farms with a history of Glässer's disease outbreaks. Sampling 213 sick pigs yielded 115 isolates of Hps, 99 of which belonged to serovars that were either potentially pathogenic or of unknown pathogenicity. Only 16 isolates from these 213 sick pigs were of a serovar known to be non-pathogenic. Conclusion Healthy pigs contain a range of Hps serovars, even on farms free of Glässer's disease. We determined the frequency of isolation of Leptospira from dogs and rodents, the serovars of Leptospira, and the clinical, gross and histological manifestations in dogs with leptospirosis in Trinidad. From dogs, samples of urine, blood and kidney were collected while only kidney and blood samples of trapped rodents were used. Isolates were cultured and serotyped using a panel of 23 international serovars and monoclonal antibodies. The risk factors for leptospirosis were also determined in owned dogs using a standard questionnaire. Of a total of 468 animals investigated for Leptospira, 70 (15.0%) were positive, comprising nine (18.0%) of 50 suspected canine leptospirosis cases, seven (3.4%) of 207 stray dogs and 54 (25.6%) of 211 rodents. The observation that rodents have a statistically (P<0.05, χ²) higher frequency of isolation emphasizes the importance of rodents as reservoirs of leptospirosis in the country. Copenhageni was the predominant serovar found in 100.0% (7/7), 33.3% (2/6) and 68.5% (37/54) of isolates from suspected canine leptospirosis cases, stray dogs and rodents, respectively. Serovars Icterohaemorrhagiae and Canicola, the two serovars present in the commercial vaccines used locally, were detected in one (1.5%) and zero (0.0%) isolates respectively of the 67 tested. Data provided suggest that the apparent vaccine failure may be a consequence of the fact that the predominant serovar (Copenhageni) detected in sick, apparently healthy dogs and in rodents is not contained in the vaccines used locally to protect dogs against canine leptospirosis. We collected 330 serum samples from 55 dairy farms in the Basin of Caparaó, State of Espírito Santo, elaluated by microscopic agglutination (MAT) for eight serovars, found a frequency of 12.42% (41) of reactor animals for at least a serovar tested. Serovar hardjobovis presented himself as the most frequent among reactive sera with 41 (12.42%) samples, followed by Bolivia with 32 Hardjo sample (9.69%), sample Hardjo Lagoa 30 (9.09%) Hardjo Norma with 21 (6.36%), Hardjo WHO 20 (6.06%) and Wolffi with 8 (2.42%), with no positive reaction against serovars Pomona and Hebdomadis. Among the 41 samples reagents, 100% of them were reactive to serovar hardjobovis followed by serovar hardjobovis Bolivia with 32 samples (78.04%), sample Hardjobovis Lagoa 30 (73.17%), Hardjoprajitno Norma sample with 21 (51.21%), WHO Hardjoprajitno sample with 20 (48.78%) and serovar Wolfi with 8 (19.51%), with no front seropositivity to serovars Pomona and Hebdomadis. Abstract: The aim of the present study was to determine the antimicrobial susceptibility of Haemophilus parasuis in China and to investigate possible correlations between antimicrobial resistance and serovars or virulence. The susceptibility of 110 clinical isolates to 22 antimicrobial agents was determined by an agar dilution method. Except 28 isolates (25.5%) were non-typable, the isolates comprising thirteen serovars (1–5, 7–10, and 12–15), with the most prevalent were serovars 4 (14.5%), 5 (26.4%), 12 (9.1%) and 13 (10.9%). All isolates were susceptible to cefotaxime, ceftiofur, azithromycin, chloramphenicol, florfenicol and tilmicosin, and most of them were susceptible to penicillin, ampicillin, cefaclor, levofloxacin, ciprofloxacin, erythromycin, tetracycline, gentamicin, spectinomycin and tiamulin; however, a high level of resistance was encountered for enrofloxacin (70.9%) and trimethoprim/sulphamethoxazole (44.5%). There were 32 antimicrobial antibiograms observed, with 23.6% of the isolates resistant to more than 3 antimicrobial agents. Antimicrobial resistance was observed in every serovar included in this study, but no statistically significant association was observed between the antimicrobial resistance and the serovars or virulence of H. parasuis. Abstract: This supplement reports the characterization of 70 new Salmonella serovars recognized between 2003 and 2007 by the WHO Collaborating Center for Reference and Research on Salmonella: 44 were assigned to Salmonella enterica subspecies enterica, 11 to subspecies salamae, 5 to subspecies arizonae, 8 to subspecies diarizonae, one to subspecies houtenae and one to Salmonella bongori.
