Preface and table of contents of a forthcoming book published by World Scientific

The aim of the thesis is the determination of the galactic escape velocity in the solar neightbourhood. A sample of very high-velocity stars (V tot ≥ 250 km -1), was built, first from Hipparcos catalogue and then form several trigonometric parallaxes catalogues (USNO, YPC and CNS3). In order to increase our sample, we have undertaken new distance determinations for Carney et al. (1994) high-proper motion stars, using the best available Hipparcos data and VandenBerg et al (1999). Isochrones. Then, for the 80 stars kept, from velocities and their errors, we have used the statistical method developed by Leonard & Tremaine (1990) and obtained a value of 500 =+ 40 km s-1 for the escape velocity in the solar neighbourhood. This determination, with the use of a logarithmic galactic potential, allows us to compute a galactic mass interval from 3 10 11 to 7 10 11 solar masses. Finally, the galactic orbits for these stars have been calculated with the help of the galactic potential model developed by Allen & Satillan (1991). The results show very large galactocentric distances (> 50 kpc) reached by the fastest few stars (V tot km -1). Numerical simulations point out the important contribution of velocity errors for orbital parameters determinations., L’objet principal de cette thèse est la détermination de la vitesse d'évasion de la galaxie au voisinage solaire. Pour ce faire, nous avons construit un échantillon d’étoiles à très grande vitesse (V tot ≥ 250 km -1), d'abord à partir des résultats précis du satellite Hipparcos (ESA 1997) puis des différents catalogues de parallaxes trigonométriques (USNO, YPC et CNS3). Afin d'élargir la taille de notre échantillon, nous avons entrepris une révision des distances pour les étoiles à grands mouvements propres de Carney et al. (1994) en nous appuyant sur les meilleures données disponibles d'Hipparcos et les isochrones de Vandenberg et al. (1999). Ainsi à partir des vitesses des 80 étoiles retenues et en tenant compte de leurs erreurs, la méthode statistique développée par Léonard & Tremaine (1990) a été appliquée et une valeur de 500 =+ 40 km s -1 pour la vitesse d'évasion au voisinage solaire a été obtenue. Cette détermination nous permet, moyennant l'utilisation d'un potentiel galactique logarithmique, de donner un intervalle de masse galactique compris entre 3 10 1 1 et 7 10 1 1 masses solaires. Enfin, l'intégration des orbites galactiques de ces étoiles à l'aide du modèle de potentiel galactique d'Allen & Santillan (1991) a mis en évidence les grandes distances galactocentriques atteintes (> 50 kpc) pour les plus rapides d'entre elles (V to t 400 km -1). Les simulations entreprises ont montré l'influence des erreurs des vitesses sur la détermination des paramètres orbitaux.

We have divided this thesis in four parts:a) PART I: Exact symplectic geometry (introduction of the problems). This part contains the basic tools of symplectic geometry and outlines the four subjects that we have study along the thesis: the determination problem, the interpolation problem, the variational problem and the breakdown problem.b) PART II: On the standard symplectic manifold (analytical part). We recall the necessary tools to work on R(d) x R(d). That is we perform a coordinate treatment of the results. First of all we relate different kinds of generating functions to the primitive function and later we solve formally the determination problem. Then we introduce different variational principles: for fixed points, periodic orbits and orbital segments. Their invariance under certain kind of transformations of phase space is proved, and we interpret physically such results. Finally we give the basic properties of invariant exact Lagrangian graphs obtaining at last that if our graph is minimizing then its orbits are minimizing.c) PART III: On the cotangent bundle (geometrical part). The first three chapters are similar to the three previous ones with the difference that we do an intrinsic treatment of the results by considering any cotangent bundle. The fourth chapter in this part deals with the solution of the interpolation problem given in analytic set up. d) PART IV: Converse KAM theory (numerical part). The last part deals with the applications to converse Kolmogorv-Arnold-Moser (KAM) theory. First of all we give a small list of different examples that we shall study later. Then we generalize converse KAM theory and we related it to the Lipschitz theory by Birkhoff and Herman. Then we perform our variational Greene method and apply it to different examples. Also we study numerically the Aubry-Mather sets in higher dimensions. After this we apply our methods to the rotational standard map that is a symplectic skew product. Then we give some ideas about the geometrical obstructions for existence of invariant tori showing them with a simple example. We also find some known Birkhoff normal forms using our methods. Finally we explain briefly how our theory can be used for arbitrary Lagrangian foliations., La present memòria es troba dividida en quatre parts ben diferenciades. La primera conté les eines bàsiques de la geometria simplèctica i planteja els quatre problemes que tractarem al llarg de la memòria: el problema de determinació, el problema d'interpolació, el problema variacional i el problema del trencament de tors invariants. La segona part tracta sobre la varietat simpléctica estàndard, i vindria a ser la part analítica. Aquí hem treballat a R(d) x R(d), és a dir hem fet un tractament coordenat dels resultats. Primer relacionem les funcions generatrius amb la funció primitiva i després resolem formalment el problema de determinación. Tot seguit tractem diferents principis variacionals per als punts fixos per a les òrbites periòdiques i per als segments orbitals. La seva invariància respecte a certs tipus de transformacions de l'espai de fase és demostrada donant una interpretació física. Finalment donem les propietats bàsiques dels grafs Lagrangians invariants, especialment aquella que diu que les òrbites sobre un graf minimitzant són minimitzants.La tercera part abraça el tema del fibrat cotangent, la part geométrica de l'obra. Els tres primers capítols segueixen més o menys la línia dels tres precedents amb la diferéncia fonamental que aquí considerem qualsevol fibrat cotangent. Fem llavors un tractament intrínsec. El quart capítol d'aquesta part està dedicat a resoldre el problema d'interpolació en el cas analític.La quarta i darrera part (que vindria a ser la secció numèrica de la tesi), tracta de les aplicacions a la teoria Kolmogorv, Arnold i Moser (KAM) inversa o del trencament dels tors invariants. Primer donem una llista d'exemples que utilitzarem més endavant. Després generalitzem la teoria KAM inversa i la relacionem amb la teoria Lipschitziana de Birkhoff i Herman. Llavors implementem el nostre criteri de Greene variacional i l'apliquem a diferents exemples. També estudiem els equivalents dels conjunts d'Aubry-Mather en dimensió alta (bé = 4). Després apliquem aquesta metodologia a l'aplicació estàndard rotacional (3D), indicant abans la teoria necessària. Llavors donem algunes idees de com generalitzar els criteris obstruccionals a dimensions altes hi ho mostrem amb un petit exemple. Finalment retrobem algunes formes normals de Birkhoff utilitzant la nostra metodologia basada en la funcióprimitiva i expliquem una mica com es podria considerar la nostra teoria tenint en compte foliacions Lagrangianes arbitràries.

The study of the origin and evolution of the currently know short-period comets is a complex issue. Nevertheless, it is based on a simple idea : the comets would reach their current orbit after deep encounters and perturbations due to the jovian planets. Since about four centuries, a lot of scientists have treated this problem with theoretical methods or, recently, by numerical integration of the comets motion. The objective of my work was to evolve a theoretical model of encounter comet-planet, to apply it to the 155 known short-period comets and to compare the achieved results to those provided by numerical integration. In fact, the scenario of encounter I considered is associated to a shock defined by Poincaré, consequently to a quasi-collision of two bodies occurring through a tiny lapse of time. A comet with a conic orbit O1 meets close to one of its vertices a planet, breaks up if it crosses the Roche limit and generates one or several comets with an orbit O2. The initial vertex becomes one of the vertices of the final orbit. Moreover, I assumed that the orbital plane of the comet was unchanged by the encounter. The numerical results have shown that some comets have had a near-parabolic initial orbit, and initial orbit beyond the Neptune’s one, have been under the successive influence of several planets or have seemed to remain in the neighborhood of the same planet. The comparisons with the numerical integration agreed with a such sample of orbits., L'étude de l'origine et de l'évolution des comètes à courte période connues actuellement est un sujet ambitieux reposant pourtant sur un principe simple : les comètes auraient atteint leur orbite actuelle à la suite de rencontres proches puis de perturbations occasionnées par les planètes joviennes. Depuis quatre siècles environ, de nombreux scientifiques ont traite ce problème à l'aide de méthodes théoriques ou en intégrant numériquement le mouvement des comètes. L'objectif de mon travail était de développer un modèle théorique de rencontre comète-planète, de l'appliquer aux 155 comètes à courte période connues et de comparer les résultats obtenus à ceux fournis par l'intégration numérique. Le scénario de rencontre que j'ai considère correspond en fait un choc défini au sens de Poincaré, c'est-à-dire à une quasi-collision de deux corps pendant un temps infiniment court. Une comète d'orbite initiale conique rencontre à l'un de ses sommets une planète et engendre une comète d'orbite elliptique admettant ce sommet initial pour l'un des siens. J'ai de plus admis que le plan orbital de la comète restait inchangé au cours de la rencontre. Les résultats numériques ont montré que certaines comètes avaient eu une orbite initiale quasi-parabolique, ou située au-delà de l'orbite de Neptune, avaient subi l'influence successive de plusieurs planètes ou semblaient rester dans le voisinage d'une même planète. Les comparaisons avec l'intégration numérique n'ont pas contredit l'obtention d'un tel échantillon d'orbites.

Let D be the connected, simply connected Lie group with Lie algebra d. One has the following results : the maximal d-invariant ideals in the convolution alegbra of integrable functions on g (resp. in the Schwartz algebra of g) coincide with the kernels of the closed d-orbits of the dual of g (resp. with the restrictions of these kernels to the Schwartz algebra). The proper closed d-prime ideals in the convolution algebra of integrable functions (resp. the proper d-prime ideals in the Schwartz algebra which are closed in the topology induced by an arbitrary Schwartz norm) coincide with the kernels of not necessarily closed d-orbits (resp. with the restrictions of these kernels to the Schwartz algebra). One has the equivalent of the Wiener property for D-invariant ideals. For a closed d-orbit, the kernel of the orbit modulo the closed minimal ideal associated to it (in the convolution algebra of integrable functions) is a nilpotent algebra. For a closed d-orbit the restriction of the kernel to the Schwartz algebra is dense in the kernal itself. Moreover, the closure of every d-orbit contains a closed d-orbit. These results generalize well known properties of nilpotent Lie groups, Soit g un groupe de Lie nilpotent, connexe, simplement connexe tel que son algèbre de Lie g soit un d-module exponentiel, d étant une algèbre exponentielle de dérivations de g. Soit d le groupe de Lie connexe, simplement connexe d'algèbre de Lie d. On montre les résultats suivants: les idéaux d-invariants maximaux de l'algèbre de convolution des fonctions intégrables sur g (resp. de l'algèbre de schwartz de g) coïncident avec les noyaux des d-orbites fermées du dual de g (resp. avec les restrictions de ces noyaux à l'algèbre de schwartz). Les idéaux d-premiers fermés propres de l'algèbre de convolution des fonctions intégrables (resp. les idéaux d-premiers propres de l'algèbre de Schwartz, fermés dans la topologie induite par une norme de Schwartz quelconque) coïncident avec les noyaux des d-orbites, non nécessairement fermées (resp. avec les restrictions de ces noyaux à l'algèbre de Schwartz). On a l'équivalent de la propriété de Wiener pour les idéaux d-invariants. Pour une d-orbite fermée, le noyau de l'orbite modulo l'idéal minimal fermé associé à cette orbite (dans l'algèbre de convolution des fonctions intégrables) est une algèbre nilpotente. Pour une d-orbite fermée, la restriction du noyau de l'orbite à l'algèbre de Schwartz est dense dans le noyau. De plus, l'adhérence de toute d-orbite contient une d-orbite fermée. Ces résultats généralisent des propriétés bien connues pour les groupes de Lie nilpotents

Study of a Moon's artificial satellite dynamics using an averaging method; Le but de cette thèse est l'étude des trajectoires des satellites artificiels sélénocentriques situés à une distance inférieure à 13 000 km du centre de la Lune. Dans la première partie, le développement de la fonction perturbatrice est effectuée en fonction des petits paramètres utilisés. En particulier, on introduit des théories semi-analytiques du mouvement de la Lune autour de la Terre et la libration du plan de l'équateur lunaire. La deuxième partie de cette thèse montre que le choix des variables canoniques de Poincaré va permettre d'obtenir des équations sans singularités. Il a été nécessaire d'introduire des expressions nouvelles qui soient suffisamment compactes pour être exploitables. La longitude du satellite est éliminée à l'aide de l'algorithme de déprit utilisant les transformées de Lie. Les parties séculaires et fonctions génératrices non développées en excentricité y sont aussi exprimées. L’élimination des angles à moyenne période se fait ensuite pour obtenir un système deux fois moyenne dont les périodes sont à priori supérieures à 28 jours. Le dernier chapitre décrit les algorithmes de calculs numériques engendrés par le travail analytique. Ils sont appliqués à quelques exemples caractéristiques qui permettent de valider la méthode employée.

Radio observations of small meteoric bodies, Une liaison radioélectrique à trente MHz, d'environ mille kilomètres, et munie d'un goniomètre précis à la réception, est utilisée pour observer les trainées ionisées créées par les petits corps météoriques qui pénètrent dans l'atmosphère supérieure. En tirant parti d'un modèle d'ionisation de la trainée météorique et des propriétés spécifiques de la prodiffusion électromagnétique, ces observations ont permis d'obtenir les distributions statistiques des éléments orbitaux et des masses d'environ 1500 petits corps météoriques. On retrouve sur les distributions orbitales les tendances qui apparaissent dans les résultats antérieurs obtenus exclusivement avec les radars russes et australiens : en allant des grandes vers les petites masses, il y a un nombre croissant d'orbites de petites dimensions, de plus grandes inclinaisons par rapport à l'écliptique et d'excentricités réduites. La deuxième partie est consacrée à l'étude du mouvement héliocentrique d'un corps de très faible masse dont l'orbite d'excentricité et d'inclinaison quelconques est perturbée par Jupiter et par la force de Poynting-Robertson. L'étude permet de traiter les perturbations d'une orbite météorique dont le rapport du grand axe à celui de Jupiter atteint ou dépassé 1/2. Il existe un couplage entre la perturbation gravitationnelle à longue période et la perturbation séculaire électromagnétique. Les résultats montrent que l'excentricité et l'inclinaison peuvent subir de fortes variations sur des durées bien inferieures à la durée de vie orbitale qui serait due au seul effet Poynting-Robertson.

NAVSTAR/GPS is a satellite positioning system with various precisions according to the type of receiver, to the method of observation and to the method of processing. During this thesis on the precise relative positioning, three themes were studied : - a new study on the receivers combination justified by the recent use of different receivers and antennas in the same campaign, - the ionospheric correction by dual-frequency model, - the improvement of broadcast orbits in regional networks like EUREF89. The application of corrections models developed, has permitted to reach a relative accuracy of 0.4 ppm on a 500 km baseline and an absolute accuracy, useful for differential navigation, of 0.700 m on 1000 km. The current performance of GPS method in geodesy (a few ppm on less than 100 km) has been so improved., NAVSTAR/GPS est un système de localisation par satellites qui permet d'obtenir des précisions très variées suivant le type de récepteur utilisé, le mode d'observation et le mode de calcul. Au cours de cette thèse portée sur la localisation relative de précision, trois études ont été menées : une étude nouvelle sur la combinaison des récepteurs rendue nécessaire par l'utilisation récente de récepteurs et antennes de caractéristiques différentes au cours d'une même campagne, la correction ionosphérique par modèle bi-fréquence, l'amélioration des orbites radiodiffusées dans le cadre de réseaux régionaux tels que EUREF89. L’application des modèles de corrections qui ont été développés, a permis d'atteindre une exactitude relative de 0,4 ppm sur une ligne de base de 500 km et une exactitude absolue, utile en navigation différentielle, de 0,700 m sur 1 000 km. Les performances courantes de la méthode GPS en géodésie (quelques ppm sur moins de 100 km) sont ainsi améliorées.

Cap a mitjans de l'any 1995 l'Agència Espacial Europea (ESA), dins el seu programa científic, té previst el llançament de satèl·lit SOHO (Solar and Heliopheric Observatory) en un projecte conjunt amb l'Agència Espacial nordamericana NASA. Entre les tasques que el satèl·lit SOHO ha de dur a terme destaquen: l'observació de les capes més superficials del Sol, la mesura de la seva velocitat i les oscil·lacions de lluminositat i la mesura in situ del vent solar. Totes aquestes observacions i mesures les ha de fer durant el període de temps gran, aproximadament sis anys, malgrat que el desitjable fora de 13 anys per tal de cobrir un cicle solar complet. Una missió semblant ja va ser duta a terme per satèl·lit americà ISSE-C entre els anys 1978 i 1982.

In the present paper we give some numerical results about natural families of periodic orbits, which emanate from limiting orbits around equilateral equilibrium points of the Restricted Three Body Problem, when the mass ratio is grater than Routh's critical one. En aquest article es presenten els resultats numèrics obtinguts sobre les famílies naturals d'òrbites periòdiques al voltant del punt L4 del problema restringit circular i la de tres cossos, per a valors del paràmetre de massa superiors a la massa crítica de Routh

This thesis presents a study of the motion of the Galilean satellites by analytical method. The solution gives the inequalities of the motion in the form of quasi-periodic of time. In chapter 1, we introduce the adopted method. The non-singular variables used in this work are simple expressions of the orbital elements. They facilitate the study of the long period evolution of the orbits of the system. The method gives, in the first stage, an intermediary solution supplied by the integration of all the terms which depend on time explicitly, and in the second stage, a variational solution which takes into account the free eccentricities and the free inclinations of the orbits. In chapter 2, we develop the perturbation function and the second member of the motion’s equations. The considered perturbation function arises from three actions : the interaction between the satellites, the action of the equatorial bulge of Jupiter and the Sun’s action. In chapter 3, we expose the different treatments used in the resolution of the equations and give some extracts from the most significant results ; in particular, the contributions to the high orders of the intermediary solution, a new solution of the libration’s equation, the first approximation of the variational solution and the terms of high degrees of eccentricities and inclinations, among which de Haerdtl’s inequalities are given with supplementary terms. In chapter 4, we present the calculation of the inequalities due to solar perturbations. This chapter contains, in the first part, a comparison of the results obtained with those of known theories, and in the second part the development of a new theory of the four great planets. The theory of Jupiter will be used as a jovicentric solar theory for the calculation of the perturbation of the Sun upon the Galilean satellites.; Le présent travail étudie le mouvement des satellites galiléens par voie analytique et donne la solution sous la forme des inégalités du mouvement exprimé en séries quasi-périodiques du temps. Il contient quatre chapitres : le premier chapitre présente la méthode adoptée. Les variables non singulières utilisées sont des expressions simples des éléments d'orbite. Elles facilitent l'étude du mouvement à très longue période du système. [spa] La mayor parte de los problemas de la Mecánica Celeste pueden reducirse a un problema perturbado de dos cuerpos. Esta memoria es una contribución a la comprensión y resolución de dichos problemas. En primer lugar se aborda la estructura del conjunto de órbitas del problema de dos cuerpos sin perturbar. Una adecuada definición de distancia entre órbitas permite, entre otros resultados, explicar las dificultades y singularidades que aparecen en los problemas perturbados en cuanto a las variables escogidas. Se demuestra a continuación la equivalencia formal de los métodos empleados en la teoría general de perturbaciones de la Mecánica Celeste (válidos en realidad para ecuaciones diferenciales ordinarias). Se explicitan los algoritmos que permiten el cálculo efectivo (mediante recurrencia) para todos los órdenes. En el caso del método clásico de Lagrange, Laplace y Poisson se obtienen las perturbaciones de orden cualquiera en forma explícita de manera directa. Se generaliza el teorema de Lagrange para la inversión de funciones. Su utilización es la base de diversas transformaciones. Otros conceptos introducidos en el último capítulo parecen tener interés en el estudio de la optimización y en el problema de los denominadores pequeños debidos a la dependencia de las frecuencias sobre el cuerpo racional. El detalle del contenido de los diversos capítulos se halla en la introducción que precede a cada uno de ellos. Como norma general se indica cuándo un resultado es conocido, omitiendo la demostración. Los conceptos de distancia entre órbitas, variedad de Kepler, elementos topológicos, operador de iteración, derivada contractiva, conjunto localmente accesible, desbloqueo de orden “k” y condición geométrica de desbloqueo, entre otros, se introducen en esta memoria. Si de un mismo concepto se citan varias referencias se debe a que en ellas se abordan distintos aspectos del mismo.

This paper is devoted to the analysis of an extended neighborhood of the collinear equilibrium points of the Restricted Three Body Problem. The analysis is done using numerical tools for the determination of periodic orbits and invariant 2D tori. All the relevant information of the neutrally stable behavior of the dynamics in the vicinity of the three libration points is given. The results in this paper extend those given in \cite{jm-rtbp}, since they avoid the convergence restrictions of the semi--analytical approach used in this reference.

The objective of the present study is to hold a preliminary analysis and design of a lunar global satellite navigation system able to provide accurate positional information to operators on the surface or in low lunar orbits. The outcome is a set of indications concerning the implications inherent in such a system. This set of indications consists in the main objectives, requirements and constraints needed during the definition and implementation of an infrastructure for global precise positioning on the lunar surface. In any preliminary mission analysis it is important to determine the design drivers. In our case, the main drivers are the orbital height, the number of satellites in the constellation, the orbital inclination and the number of orbital planes. These four parameters are the main characteristics that define the constellation performance, therefore their final selection is crucial for the mission success. In our case, two constraints have been applied in order to determine the constellation: (1) no more than three orbital planes and (2) no more than 18 satellites. The constellation selection process has been carried out with the help of computer simulation. Thanks to it, we were able to choose the constellation whose parameters combination resulted in the best performance. The final constellation has a height of 6500 km, three orbital planes, 15 satellites and an inclination of 90°. In order to maintain the correct performance of the constellation, a station-keeping strategy has been developed. Computer simulation of the chosen constellation allowed us to quantify the perturbation effects on the satellites and to identify which perturbation is the primary source of orbital deviations. Central body gravitation, third body-perturbations and solar radiation pressure have been computed for a period of one year with the result of a propellant (also known as Δv) budget of 1 km/s. Payload selection is an important step in the design process. The characterization of its mass, power and thermal requirements, and components influences the design of all the other subsystems. Relativistic effects on time are taken into account because the accuracy of the system depends on clock errors. The study concludes that, although relativistic effects on time are less significant on the constellation than on the terrestrial GPS system, they still need to be corrected. This study also undertakes a preliminary design of the satellite subsystems. Power and mass budget are made and a preliminary analysis of the propulsion, thermal and communications subsystems are also carried out. The proposed preliminary satellite design consists in a 1000kg-1600W class platform which will transmit in the L-band (to the lunar surface) and in the X-band (to the Earth). If the station-keeping is carried out by a bipropellant thruster, the propellant budget needed is 225 kg. However, some indications for electrical propulsion for the station-keeping maneuvers are also provided. The thermal environment is the biggest challenge of the mission because of the Earth eclipses1. They can last more than 5 hours which leads to the temperature getting as low as -35°C. During lunar2 eclipses, secondary batteries can produce around 1300 W which will probably not be sufficient to maintain the spacecraft temperature within operational limits during Earth eclipses, so an extra set of batteries will be needed.

In this paper, we consider a new dynamical scenario in which a constantly charged spacecraft (follower) moves near a leader spacecraft, which follows a circular Keplerian orbit around the Earth and generates a rotating artificial magnetic dipole. Considering three general orientations of the dipole: normal, radial and tangential, we study the dynamics of the system and its application potential in formation flying. For this purpose, the critical points of the system and their stabilities are explored, the different families of periodic orbits around each equilibrium point are computed, as well as the stability, possible bifurcations and terminations(if exist). By selecting suitable periodic orbits, two formation flying configurations are briefly explored, in which satellites are placed at the periodic orbits around two or four symmetric equilibrium points of the system

The aim of this work is to look for rescue trajectories that leave the surface of the Moon, belonging to the hyperbolic manifolds associated with the central manifold of the Lagrangian points L1 and L2 of the Earth–Moon system. The model used for the Earth–Moon system is the Circular Restricted Three-Body Problem. We consider as nominal arrival orbits halo orbits and square Lissajous orbits around L1 and L2 and we show, for a given Dv, the regions of the Moon’s surface from which we can reach them. The key point of this work is the geometry of the hyperbolic manifolds associated with libration point orbits. Both periodic/ quasi-periodic orbits and their corresponding stable invariant manifold are approximated by means of the Lindstedt–Poincaré semi-analytical approach.

In this paper we present a tool to study the non-linear propagation of uncertainties for orbits around the Earth. The tool we introduce is known as Jet Transport and allows to propagate full neighborhoods of initial states instead of a single initial state by means of usual numerical integrators. The description of the transported neighborhood is ob- tained in a semi-analytical way by means of polynomials in 6 variables. These variables correspond to displacements in the phase space from the reference point selected in an orbit as initial condition. The basis of the procedure is a standard numerical integrator of ordinary differential equations (such as a Runge-Kutta or a Taylor method) where the usual arithmetic is replaced by a polynomial arithmetic. In this way, the solution of the variational equations is also obtained up to high order. This methodology is applied to the propagation of satellite trajectories and to the computation of images of uncertainty ellipsoids including high order nonlinear descriptions. The procedure can be specially adapted to the determination of collision probabilities with catalogued space debris or for the end of life analysis of spacecraft in Medium Earth Orbits

We present lower bounds for the orbit length of reduction modulo primes of parametric polynomial dynamical systems defined over the integers, under a suitable hypothesis on its set of preperiodic points over C \mathbb {C} . Applying recent results of Baker and DeMarco (2011) and of Ghioca, Krieger, Nguyen and Ye (2017), we obtain explicit families of parametric polynomials and initial points such that the reductions modulo primes have long orbits, for all but a finite number of values of the parameters. This generalizes a previous lower bound due to Chang (2015). As a by-product, we also slightly improve a result of Silverman (2008) and recover a result of Akbary and Ghioca (2009) as special extreme cases of our estimates.

We study dynamics and bifurcations of two-dimensional reversible maps having non-transversal heteroclinic cycles containing symmetric saddle periodic points. We consider one-parameter families of reversible maps unfolding generally the initial heteroclinic tangency and prove that there are infinitely sequences (cascades) of bifurcations of birth of asymptotically stable and unstable as well as elliptic periodic orbits.

© 2016 European Union Consider the three-body problem, in the regime where one body revolves far away around the other two, in space, the masses of the bodies being arbitrary but fixed; in this regime, there are no resonances in mean motions. The so-called secular dynamics governs the slow evolution of the Keplerian ellipses. We show that it contains a horseshoe and all the chaotic dynamics which goes along with it, corresponding to motions along which the eccentricity of the inner ellipse undergoes large, random excursions. The proof goes through the surprisingly explicit computation of the homoclinic solution of the first order secular system, its complex singularities and the Melnikov potential.

We consider the dynamics of coorbital motion of two small moons about a large planet which have nearly circular orbits with almost equal radii. These moons avoid collision because they switch orbits during each close encounter. We approach the problem as a perturbation of decoupled Kepler problems as in Poincar ́ e’s periodic orbits of the first kind. The perturbation is large but only in a small region in the phase space. We discuss the relationship required among the small quantities (radial separation, mass, and minimum angular separation). Persistence of the orbits is discussed.

The term Space Manifold Dynamics (SMD) has been proposed for encompassing the various applications of Dynamical Systems methods to spacecraft mission analysis and design, ranging from the exploitation of libration orbits around the collinear Lagrangian points to the design of optimal station-keeping and eclipse avoidance manoeuvres or the determination of low energy lunar and interplanetary transfers

La géographie est historiquement liée à l’exploration. Les premières cartes à réaliser, les « nouvelles » terres à explorer, ont souvent été le fait de géographes. Dans la deuxième moitié du XXème siècle, une nouvelle phase d’exploration s’est ouverte pour les humains, avec l’exploration du milieu spatial. Rapidement suivie par son exploitation, l’exploration de ce nouveau territoire où s’active l’humanité reste peu étudiée par la géographie. Notre propos cherche, dans une certaine mesure, à combler ce manque, en proposant une étude générale sur le milieu spatial, plus précisément sur la composante aujourd’hui matériellement et physiquement explorable : le système solaire. La partie I définit et structure ce champs d’étude, à l’aide notamment des différents types d’orbites, de la Lune, de Mars et des astéroïdes. La partie II étudie l’apport actuel de l’utilisation du milieu spatial, afin de déterminer dans quelles mesures elle influe et influera sur les activités humaines. Avec la partie III entrent en jeu les acteurs principaux de l’accès à l’espace. Une analyse de la situation des politiques spatiales est menée, moyen retenu pour cerner les enjeux de cet accès et de l’utilisation que l’on peut en faire. Un chapitre est également consacré au secteur privé, dont le poids dans les différentes activités liées au milieu spatial augmente régulièrement. Description du nouveau champs d’étude, analyse de son potentiel et mise en perspective avec les principaux acteurs de notre planète (interprétée comme un système global) caractérise ainsi la démarche choisie. Cette méthodologie a permis de construire une connaissance, s’exprimant parfois par des découvertes intéressantes, notamment l’hypothèse d’une nouvelle phase forte d’exploration et d’utilisation du système solaire, au début de laquelle nous nous trouvons actuellement.
