Abstract

Light emission from color centers in diamond is being extensively investigated for developing, among other quantum devices, single-photon sources operating at room temperature. By doping diamond with phosphorus, one obtains an n-type semiconductor, which can be exploited for the electrical excitation of color centers. Here, we discuss the optical properties of color centers in phosphorus-doped diamond, especially the silicon-vacancy center, presenting the single-photon emission characteristics and the temperature dependence aiming for electroluminescent single-photon emitting devices.

Abstract

Fabrication, packaging and experimental results on the calibration of metal-semiconductor-metal (MSM) photodetectors made on diamond are reported. LYRA (Lyman-α RAdiometer onboard PROBA-2) will use diamond detectors for the first time in space for a solar physics instrument. A set of measurement campaigns was designed to obtain the XUV-to-VIS responsivity of the devices and other characterizations. The measurements of responsivity in EUV and VUV spectral ranges (40–240 nm) have been carried out by the Physkalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) in Germany at the electron storage ring BESSY II. The longer wavelength range from 210 to 1127 nm was measured with monochromatic light by using a Xe-lamp at IMO-IMOMEC. The diamond detectors exhibit a photoresponse which lie in the 35–65 mA/W range at 200 nm (corresponding to an external quantum efficiency of 20–40%) and indicate a visible rejection ratio (200–500 nm) higher than four orders of magnitude. 188. Metal–insulator transition and superconductivity in highly borondoped nanocrystalline diamond films

Abstract

The low temperature electronic transport of highly borondoped nanocrystalline diamond films is studied down to 300 mK. The films show superconducting properties with critical temperatures Tcup to 2.1 K. The metal–insulator and superconducting transitions are driven by the dopant concentration and greatly influenced by the granularity in this system, as compared to highly borondoped single crystal diamond. The critical boron concentration for the metal–insulator transition lies in the range from 2.3 × 1020up to 2.9 × 1020 cm−3, as determined from transport measurements at low temperatures. Insulating nanocrystalline samples follow an Efros–Shklovskii ES type of temperature dependence for the conductivity up to room temperature, in contrast to Mott variable range hopping VRH in the case of insulating single crystal diamond close to the metal–insulator transition. The electronic transport in the metallic samples not only depends on the properties of the grains highly borondoped single crystal diamond, but also on the intergranular coupling between the grains. The Josephson coupling between the grains plays an important role for the superconductivity in this system, leading to a superconducting transition with global phase coherence at sufficiently low temperatures. Metallic nanocrystalline samples show similarities to highly borondoped single crystal diamond. However, metallic samples close to the metal–insulator transition show a richer behavior. In particular, a peak was observed in the lowtemperature magnetoresistance measurements for samples close to the transition, which can be explained by corrections to the conductance arising from superconducting fluctuations.

Abstract

Synthetic diamond is regarded as a promising material for biosensors: it forms a stable platform for genetic assays and its biocompatibility opens the possibility for in vivo sensing. In this study the use of a thymidine linker for covalent DNA attachment was evaluated. Contact angle measurements provided a qualitative test of the initially oxidized surface. X-ray photoemission spectroscopy was used for further analysis of the oxides and for monitoring the effect of subsequent chemical treatments. The presence of FITC-labelled DNA was confirmed by confocal fluorescence microscopy. Enzyme linked immunosorbent assays indicated that this DNA was merely adsorbed on the diamond surface instead of covalently bound.

Abstract

The near-optical absorption edge photoresponse in CVD diamond thin films, prepared by the CVD method, and the photoresponse in thin boron carbo-nitride (BCN) films, prepared by the rf-inductively coupled plasma CVD technique, have been studied. In case of diamond, the subgap photoresponse is strongly influenced by surface treatments such as plasma hydrogenation or annealing. It is shown that, in case of BCN films, the gap Eg and the slope of the fundamental absorption edge depend on deposition parameters. The energy slope E0 of the Urbach tail is typically 300 meV for the nanocrystalline h-BCN films, and a typical value for Eg is about 6 eV.

Abstract

Nanocrystalline diamond films have generated substantial interest in recent years due to their low cost, extreme properties and wide application arena. Diamond is chemically inert, has a wide electrochemical window and is stable in numerous harsh environments. Nanocrystalline diamond has the advantage of being readily grown on a variety of substrates at very low thickness, resulting in smooth conformal coatings with high transparency. These films can be doped from highly insulating to metallically conductive and at very high concentrations become superconducting.
