This paper analyzes the events that originated an integrated water resources management (IWRM) model called Consorcio de Aguas de la Marina Baja (CAMB), in the province of Alicante (Spain), in 1978. The impact of tourism and population growth in the second half of the 20th century motivated the need for new management formulas seeking a balance between available resources and a greater need for water resources. The emergence of mass tourism in Benidorm at the end of the 1950s generated a great imbalance between the needs and availability of water resources. Also considering the effect of periods of severe drought, the solution to the deficit was found in the principles of institutional economics and circular water management. Water infrastructure and technology are elements of great importance in this model, allowing the exchange of natural water for reclaimed water, as a result of previous agreements between traditional irrigators and supply users of coastal populations. Its success has guaranteed the coexistence of traditional agriculture and the consolidated tourism activity, making possible the conservation of the cultural landscape. The sustainability of agricultural commodities produced in the Southern U.S. under irrigation is increasingly at risk due to erratic rainfall patterns, inadequate water supplies and compromised water quality. This study assessed the needs of crop growers in the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Southern Region. The purpose was to identify growers' critical water resource management concerns to identify research priorities from the perspective of growers in this region. To obtain this information, a questionnaire was developed and distributed to growers throughout the Southern Region in 2020. The final sample included 111 crop (row and specialty) production growers from the Southern Region. Overall, respondents named the water available to irrigate as the greatest water resource management priority. Within all the water availability priorities asked, respondents' first choice was declining water supply in the future. Declining water supply and the cost of irrigating presently were the next most frequently named water availability priorities. Growers named both increasing the efficiency of irrigation and development of farming practices to improve soil moisture retention as the primary and secondary focus of future irrigation research, respectively. Irrigation strongly influences land‐atmosphere processes from regional to global scale. Therefore, an accurate representation of irrigation is crucial to understand these interactions and address water resources issues. While irrigation schemes are increasingly integrated into land surface models, their evaluation and further development remains challenging due to data limitations. This study assessed the representation of field‐scale irrigation using the Community Land Model version 5 (CLM5) through comparison of observed and simulated soil moisture, transpiration and crop yield. Irrigation was simulated by (a) adjusting the current irrigation routine and (b) by implementing a novel irrigation data stream that allows to directly use observed irrigation amounts and schedules. In a following step, the effect of different irrigation scenarios at the regional scale was simulated by using this novel data stream. At the plot scale, the novel irrigation data stream performed better in representing observed SM dynamics compared to the current irrigation routine. Nonetheless, simplifications in crop and irrigation representation and uncertainty in the relation between water stress and yield currently limit the ability of CLM5 for field‐scale irrigation scheduling. Still, the simulations revealed valuable insights into model performance that can inform and improve the modeling beyond the field scale. At regional scale, the simulations identified irrigation priorities and potential water savings. Furthermore, application of LSMs such as CLM5 can help to study the effects of irrigation beyond water availability, for example, on energy fluxes and climate, thus providing a powerful tool to assess the broader implications of irrigation at larger scale. However, developing these models is difficult due to limited data. Two methods were used: an updated irrigation routine and a new data stream that uses actual irrigation amounts and schedules. The new data stream more accurately represented soil moisture. Incorporating water footprints and virtual water into crop redistribution provides a new approach for efficient water resources utilization and synergistic development of water surplus and scarce regions. In this work, the absolute and comparative advantage of the production‐based blue and gray water footprint (PWFblue and PWFgray), the calorie‐based blue water footprint (CWFblue) and the net benefit‐based blue water footprint (NBWFblue) were used as coefficients to establish a bi‐level crop redistribution model. The mode considers upper‐level decision makers interested in maximizing food security and ecological security and lower‐level decision makers interested in water use efficiency, water use benefits and net benefits. The model was applied in the Hetao Irrigation District (HID), China. The results showed that after optimization, the PWFblue, CWFblue, NBWFblue, and gray water footprint (GWF) of the HID were reduced by 23.32%, 5.60%, 17.40%, and 6.67%, respectively. National benefits were improved, especially when considering synergistic optimization, although the net benefits of HID was affected. The calorie supply increased by 9.6 × 109 kcal, the GWF decreased by 8.29 × 106 m3, and water use efficiency and benefits were improved in China. In contrast, the calorie supply and the net benefits of the HID decreased, while the GWF increased. Moreover, multiple stakeholders were involved in crop redistribution and required national synergies. The bi‐level model proved more suitable than the multi‐objective model. The model proposed in this work considers synergies outside the region in crop redistribution within the region, and can provide new insight for water and soil resources management in arid and semi‐arid regions. The study presents a bibliometric analysis of scientific literature on alternate wetting and drying (AWD) as a water-saving irrigation practice for rice cultivation. Data were collected from the Web of Science, resulting in a database of 439 articles written by 2574 authors in 167 journals. The study reveals the growing importance of AWD in publications from the 90s to mid-2022, with fast growth and reaching its peak in the last 5 years, suggesting that the full potential of AWD remains yet to be realised and explored. Most papers are produced in oriental countries, except the USA and Australia. The trend of keywords in the research on AWD reveals a persistence of certain themes throughout the years while simultaneously showcasing a clear evolution of the topics being addressed. In addition to optimising productivity and agricultural yields, research now encompasses environmental issues and human and crop health, reflecting a broader trend in agriculture and research towards sustainable and environmentally responsible practices. This analysis provides insights into the development and direction of research in AWD, emphasising the need for future research to address the emerging concerns of the impact of AWD on the environment, human and crop health, and economic profitability of AWD adoption. The National Water Model (NWM) provides critical analyses and projections of streamflow that support water management decisions. However, the NWM performs poorly in lower-elevation rivers of the western United States (US). The accuracy of the NWM depends on the fidelity of the model inputs and the representation and calibration of model processes and water sources. To evaluate the NWM performance in the western US, we compared observations of river water isotope ratios (18 O / 16 O and 2 H / 1 H expressed in δ notation) to NWM-flux-estimated (model) river reach isotope ratios. The modeled estimates were calculated from long-term (2000–2019) mean summer (June, July, and August) NWM hydrologic fluxes and gridded isotope ratios using a mass balance approach. The observational dataset comprised 4503 in-stream water isotope observations in 877 reaches across 5 basins. A simple regression between observed and modeled isotope ratios explained 57.9 % (δ18 O) and 67.1 % (δ2 H) of variance, although observations were 0.5 ‰ (δ18 O) and 4.8 ‰ (δ2 H) higher, on average, than mass balance estimates. The unexplained variance suggest that the NWM does not include all relevant water fluxes to rivers. To infer possible missing water fluxes, we evaluated patterns in observation–model differences using δ18Odiff (δ18Oobs-δ18Omod) and ddiff (δ2Hdiff-8⋅δ18Odiff). We detected evidence of evaporation in observations but not model estimates (negative ddiff and positive δ18Odiff) at lower-elevation, higher-stream-order, arid sites. The catchment actual-evaporation-to-precipitation ratio, the fraction of streamflow estimated to be derived from agricultural irrigation, and whether a site was reservoir-affected were all significant predictors of ddiff in a linear mixed-effects model, with up to 15.2 % of variance explained by fixed effects. This finding is supported by seasonal patterns, groundwater levels, and isotope ratios, and it suggests the importance of including irrigation return flows to rivers, especially in lower-elevation, higher-stream-order, arid rivers of the western US. Water management is critical in nations with water scarcity and it affects farming significantly. Farming plays a major role in human livelihood with the increase in population. Presently, automated greenhouses integrating IoT-sensor devices that track vital parameters for agricultural operations can be found. The several data gained from the field provides a solid basis for farmers to tailor their irrigation practices consistently. This study proposes a LoRa-based Internet of things smart irrigation control solution with a hybrid classifier CNN-SVM. The proposed LoRaWAN combines Ultra-low-power IoT sensors that are tactically set up over the plantation field to track the soil parameters. The solution is aimed at bypassing weekly irrigation demanded in farming operations, in conformity to soil states and climatic. The direct collection of a live report from the farm area is conceived to reinforce the irrigation activity and present the farmer with sufficient data, like timing for irrigations, and mitigate the overall costs of conservation and water. The tracked soil measurement is delivered to the IoT cloud server for storage and analysis with machine learning algorithms to take up the schedules to perform in the field. The experimental analysis confirms the sovereignty of the proposed solution in terms of precision, recall, accuracy, and validate the energy and delivery ratio capacity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

During the warm months of the year in Catalonia, the marine air overcomes the coastal mountain range and reaches the eastern Ebro sub-basin. This phenomenon is called marinada and has recently been thoroughly characterized for the first time by , based on surface climatological data. However, the main physical mechanisms involved in its arrival and propagation remain to be discovered. This study aims to understand how the marinada is formed and how it interacts with the already developed atmospheric boundary layer. Surface and atmospheric observations are used in combination with the coupled surface–atmosphere model Meso-NH to reveal the mechanisms at play. It is shown that the marinada is generated by the advection of a cool marine air mass over the Catalan Pre-coastal Range by the action of the sea breeze and the upslope wind. This marine air mass then flows into the Ebro basin, creating what is known as the marinada. The characteristics and dynamics of the marinada allow it to be classified as a fall wind. It is also shown that the arrival, propagation and decay of the marinada is strongly dependent on the larger-scale weather situation: westerlies or thermal low. The current study provides a consistent framework for understanding the marinada, paving the way for better modeling and prediction of the phenomenon. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A combination of accelerated population growth and severe droughts has created pressure on food security and driven the development of irrigation schemes across sub-Saharan Africa. Irrigation has been associated with increased malaria risk, but risk prediction remains difficult due to the heterogeneity of irrigation and the environment. While investigating transmission dynamics is helpful, malaria models cannot be applied directly in irrigated regions as they typically rely only on rainfall as a source of water to quantify larval habitats. By coupling a hydrologic model with an agent-based malaria model for a sugarcane plantation site in Arjo, Ethiopia, we demonstrated how incorporating hydrologic processes to estimate larval habitats can affect malaria transmission. Using the coupled model, we then examined the impact of an existing irrigation scheme on malaria transmission dynamics. The inclusion of hydrologic processes increased the variability of larval habitat area by around two-fold and resulted in reduction in malaria transmission by 60%. In addition, irrigation increased all habitat types in the dry season by up to 7.4 times. It converted temporary and semi-permanent habitats to permanent habitats during the rainy season, which grew by about 24%. Consequently, malaria transmission was sustained all-year round and intensified during the main transmission season, with the peak shifted forward by around 1 month. Lastly, we evaluated the spatiotemporal distribution of adult vectors under the effect of irrigation by resolving habitat heterogeneity. These findings could help larval source management by identifying transmission hotspots and prioritizing resources for malaria elimination planning.

BACKGROUND: Water resource development projects, such as dams and irrigation schemes, have a positive impact on food security and poverty reduction. However, such projects could increase prevalence of vector borne disease, such as malaria. This study investigate the impact of different agroecosystems and prevalence of malaria infection in Southwest Ethiopia. METHODS: Two cross-sectional surveys were conducted in the dry and wet seasons in irrigated and non-irrigated clusters of Arjo sugarcane and Gambella rice development areas of Ethiopia in 2019. A total of 4464 and 2176 study participants from 1449 households in Arjo and 546 households in Gambella enrolled in the study and blood samples were collected, respectively. All blood samples were microscopically examined and a subset of microscopy negative blood samples (n = 2244) were analysed by qPCR. Mixed effect logistic regression and generalized estimating equation were used to determine microscopic and submicroscopic malaria infection and the associated risk factors, respectively. RESULTS: Prevalence by microscopy was 2.0% (88/4464) in Arjo and 6.1% (133/2176) in Gambella. IntroductionUnder water stress conditions, intercropping can be used as a strategy for maximum use of sunlight and limited water resources. Due to the difference in morphological and physiological traits, the two plants corn and mung bean may be suitable for intercropping under drought stress; Therefore, this research was conducted with the aim of investigating the effects of drought stress on the physiological traits and yield of corn and mung beans in monocultures and intercropping in order to study the possibility of reducing water consumption in this production system.Materials and methodsAn experiment was carried out as a split plot based on randomized complete block design with three replications at Ilam University during 2019-2020 growing season. The main plot were four water regimes including (40, 60, 80, and 100% of the plant's water requirement) and the subplots were include the planting pattern at four levels (additive intercropping series 100% corn + 50% mung bean, replacement intercropping series 50% corn + 50% mung bean and monocultures of mung bean and corn). The application of drought stress started after the establishment stage of the plant and continued until the harvest. At the end of the growth period, some physiological traits of both plants were measured, including photosynthetic pigments, photosynthesis rate, transpiration rate, intercellular CO2 concentration, proline amount, leaf relative water content and grain yield. Finally, analysis of variance (ANOVA) was performed using Minitab 14 and SAS 9.1 softwares and the means compared by HSD test at 5% probability level (p≤0.05).Results and discussionThe results showed the highest rate of photosynthesis (25.4 µmol CO2.m-2.s-1) was obtained in the treatment of 100% water requirement and the lowest rate of photosynthesis was obtained in 40% water requirement, which showed a decrease of 68.5% compared to the well-watered conditions. The rate of photosynthesis of corn in the replacement intercropping of 50% corn + 50% mung bean was 18.3% higher compared to monocultures corn. The highest rate of mung bean photosynthesis was observed in replacement intercropping under conditions of 100% water requirement and additive intercropping series under 80% water requirement, and the lowest rate of mung bean photosynthesis was observed in intercropping under conditions of 60 and 40% water requirement. Dehydration stress decreased the amount of total chlorophyll in mung beans and corn. The highest intercellular CO2 concentration (475.5 mmol of CO2.m-2.s-1) and the temperature of the corn leaf (36.7 °C) belonged to the 40% water requirement treatment. The rate of transpiration of corn and mung bean decreased by 55.56 and 61.43% in the condition of 40% water requirement compared to well-watered conditions. Water stress reduced the relative water content of corn and mung bean. The highest proline in corn and mung leaves (46.3 and 45.23 µmol.g-1.FW-1, respectively) was obtained in the treatment of 40% water requirement, which had no significant difference with 60% water requirement. Corn grain yield in the treatment of 40% water requirement showed a decrease of 52.76% compared to 100% water requirement. Monocultures (3945.8 kg.ha-1) and intercropping (3875.1 kg.ha-1) had the highest corn grain yield, and the lowest corn grain yield in replacement intercropping was 2700 kg ha-1. At all irrigation levels, the highest grain yield of mung bean was obtained in monocultures, and the yield decreased in additive and replacement intercropping, and additive intercropping had the lowest grain yield. The values of land equality ratio of all intercropping patterns were greater than one, which indicates the advantage of corn and mung bean intercropping patterns to use land and increase yield.ConclusionConsidering the occurrence of recent droughts in arid and semi-arid regions of the country and the need for forage in these regions, the cultivation of forage plants, especially corn, is inevitable. Therefore, one of the appropriate strategies to protection in management and water consumption is the intercropping of this plant with plants of the legume such as mung bean. Intercropping can partially moderate the effects of drought stress on plant water conditions. The agricultural crop that is particularly important to the world is maize, and its development is frequently impacted by a crucial factor known as moisture stress. It is crucial to understand how maize reacts to different irrigation depths, especially in dry and semi-arid locations where it has high irrigation requirements and is sensitive to water stress. Using the furrow irrigation method, an experiment at Birr Farm in the irrigation seasons of 2022–2023 examined the effects of varying irrigation depths (from 50% ETc to 150% ETc) on maize yields and related components. The experiment is set as a randomized complete block design with three replications. The outcomes showed that different irrigation depths had a substantial (P < 0.001) impact on yield characteristics. The highest grain yield, reaching 6.08 t/ha and 5.83 t/ha, occurred at 100% ETc in the second and first seasons, respectively. Similarly, the peak above-biomass yield, at 14.28 and 14.94 t/ha, was observed at 100% ETc in the second and first seasons, respectively, diminishing with further deviations in irrigation depth. From an economic standpoint, applying 100% ETc proved financially viable for small-scale farmers. Notably, utilizing a 50% ETc irrigation depth allowed for water savings of 4345.95 m3/ha, subsequently enabling the irrigation of an additional 0.43 ha, demonstrating a practical water-saving approach for downstream users in irrigation schemes, even if it was 8.9 kg m−3 yield reductions.

Abstract Humans have greatly altered earth’s terrestrial water cycle with the majority of fresh water being used for agriculture. Irrigation changes spatial and temporal water availability and alters mosquito abundance and phenology. Previous studies evaluating the effect of irrigation on mosquito abundance and mosquito-borne disease have shown inconsistent results and little is known about the effect of irrigation on variability in mosquito abundance. We examined the effect of irrigation, climate and land cover on mosquito abundance and human West Nile virus (WNV) disease cases across California. Irrigation made up nearly a third of total water inputs, and exceeded precipitation in some regions. Abundance of two key vectors of several arboviruses, including WNV, Culex tarsalis and the Culex pipiens complex, increased 17–21-fold with irrigation. Irrigation reduced seasonal variability in C. tarsalis abundance by 36.1%. Human WNV incidence increased with irrigation, which explained more than a third (34.2%) of the variation in WNV incidence among California counties. These results suggest that irrigation can increase and decouple mosquito populations from natural precipitation variability, resulting in sustained and increased disease burdens. Shifts in precipitation due to climate change are likely to result in increased irrigation in many arid regions which could increase mosquito populations and disease.

Abstract This study focused on the effect of silicon nanoparticles (Si-Nps) use on growth and water use efficiency (WUE) of tomato in hydroponic cultivation under drought stress. Experimental treatments included full irrigation, supplying 85 and 70% of crop water requirement (I100, I85 and I70) and use of Si-Nps in three levels of 0, 50 and 100 ppm (N0, N50 and N100) which was performed in a completely randomized design with three replications. Si-Nps were applied in two ways: leaf feeding (L) and root feeding (R). Data analysis showed that different levels of irrigation, Si-Nps and the interaction effect of theirs had a significant effect on fruit weight, leaf fresh and dry weight, stem fresh weight and WUE at 1% level. Si-Nps had a significant effect on stem dry weight at 1% and fruit sugar at 5%. The interaction effect of irrigation and Si-Nps had a significant effect on stem dry weight and fruit sugar at 1%. The maximum fresh fruit weight was related to treatment I85LN100 and compared to the control treatment, it was 7.9% more. The maximum WUE was observed in I70RN50 treatment, which was 56.3% higher than control treatment. Generally, applying irrigation I70RN50 gives the best result for hydroponic tomato cultivation in greenhouse conditions.

Purpose: Sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) is commonly used to irrigate primary teeth during pulpectomy. Although high concentrations of NaOCl are effective, they pose a risk of toxic damage to periapical tissues if NaOCl penetrates through the apical foramen. Therefore, low concentrations of NaOCl are preferred to mitigate this risk. However, concerns persist regarding the antibacterial efficacy of low concentrations of NaOCl compared to high concentrations. The objective of this study was to assess and compare the efficacy of 1% and 3% NaOCl irrigation in reducing bacterial load within primary teeth root canals. Materials and methods: This clinical study involved forty participants divided into two groups. Group 1 (n = 20) received canal irrigation with 1 % NaOCl solution, while Group 2 (n = 20) received canal irrigation with 3 % NaOCl solution. Microbial samples were collected from the root canal using a paper point before and after irrigation. The samples were aseptically transferred to ultra-snap tubes and then analyzed using a Bioluminometer. The results were recorded. Results: Both groups exhibited a decrease in bacterial count after irrigation. The mean colony count post irrigation for 3 % NaOCl was 258.05 ± 28.61, and for 1 % NaOCl it was 267.60 ± 30.56. However, no statistically significant difference was observed upon intergroup comparison. Conclusion: This study shows that 1% NaOCl is equally effective as 3% NaOCl in reducing bacterial count in root canals. Thus, using 1% NaOCl as an irrigant is appropriate in clinical practice.

Abstract Tackling nutrition insecurity remains a critical challenge in developing countries. In the predominantly rain‐fed and smallholder‐based farming systems of Ethiopia, production diversity and livelihood strategies of the farm households vary across geographic areas. However, the effects of household socioeconomic characteristics, production diversity, and household incomes on nutrition profiles in distinct settings have been inadequately understood. Therefore, this study was undertaken to examine the association of farming system type, sources of income, and household wealth status with household nutrition profiles in three remote locations such as Mennisa, Welmel Tiqa, and Agam Wuha that represent root crops‐based farming, maize‐based semi‐pastoral farming, and teff‐based cereal farming systems, respectively. A combination of qualitative and quantitative data collection techniques was employed. A multistage sampling procedure was used to select a total of 265 smallholder households for the structured survey interviews. Standard statistical tests and Tobit regression analyses were performed after determining the wealth category of each household. Results revealed a diversity of income sources used by each of the farm households with average values of 9 in Mennisa, 10 in Agam Wuha, and 11 in Welmel Tiqa, with the contributions of each income source varying by household wealth category and location. As expected, expenditures on food significantly exceeded those on non‐food categories for poor households and vice versa for rich wealth households. The average total food variety score (FVS) for Welmel Tiqa was twice that for Agam Wuha, confirming the need for site‐specific nutrition profile assessments. Despite the observed differences in household nutrition profiles among wealth categories and locations, the apparent intakes of vitamin A, vitamin B12, vitamin D, and calcium were consistently below the population‐level estimated average requirements across all locations. The number of adequately consumed nutrients by farm households was negatively associated with family size, age of household heads, livestock holdings, wealth categories, and irrigation use, and positively associated with crop production diversity, income diversity, and FVS. The negative association between irrigation use and nutrition security was likely due to the focus on producing crops with a high market value on land under irrigation, coupled with ineffective allocation of generated income for enhancing household nutritional outcomes. Therefore, programs that include irrigated agriculture investments should consider adopting a more integrated nutrition‐sensitive interventions, including consideration of locally adapted nutritious crops, such as orange‐flesh sweet potato, to address critical deficiency of Vitamin A, nutrition training coupled with development of recipes and cooking demonstrations, and marketing and promotion for nutritious crops.

The study assessed static management, i.e., without planned periodic maintenance of the storage (no sediment dredging) denoted as SC1, or with maintenance denoted as SC2. The second approach was dynamic management based on applying Real-Time Control (RTC) techniques to scenario SC1 and scenario SC2 denoted as RTC-1 and RTC-2, respectively. The dynamic management of the UCT dam with RTC-1 and RTC-2 approaches increase yield by 2.1 and 1.1 ml, respectively. Additionally, RTC-1 and RTC-2 approaches increase volumetric reliability by 5.3 and 2.5%, respectively, while maintaining the required level of service of a stormwater harvesting system. SC1 and SC2 results in water savings of up to 21.15 and 21.45 ZAR/kl, respectively, while RTC-1 and RTC-2 could save up to 19.35 and 19.45 ZAR/kl. Thus, static configurations results in water savings approximately 9% in comparison to RTC. In addition, static configurations harvested stormwater at a relatively lowest unit cost in comparison to RTC configurations. Notwithstanding this finding, the RTC system exhibits a great potential in reshaping the stormwater harvesting system to simultaneously deliver water conservation and stormwater management. Climate change and rainfall variability are driving many farmers to adopt irrigation, who were historically within rain-dependent regions, to sustain crop productivity. In the Mid-Atlantic region, irrigation in agriculture has grown since the 1980s due to rising temperatures and changes in precipitation patterns. Dry summers and uneven seasonal rainfall have necessitated a shift toward irrigation, particularly in Maryland's Coastal Plain. However, high dependence on confined groundwater for irrigation around this area has strained aquifers. To mitigate this strain, exploring alternative water sources is now important. This study investigates the viability of utilizing treated wastewater from plants as an irrigation substitute in Maryland's Coastal Plain. Using the Soil and Water Assessment Tool, the research evaluates crop productivity and irrigation needs under various climate scenarios. Results indicate that recycled water from nearby treatment plants can meet crop water requirements during wet years and partially during moderate and dry years, reducing aquifer reliance by 56 and 30%, respectively. This framework aims to boost yields while conserving freshwater resources. By serving as a decision support tool, stakeholders can assess the feasibility of recycled water for irrigation, thereby potentially reducing strain on confined aquifers. Due to its geographical location in the arid and semi-arid zone, Algeria is suffering from water stress amplified by the effects of climate change. For these reasons this study was conducted to evaluate the suitability for agricultural reuse of treated wastewater of Baraki WWTP. The quality for agricultural reuse is related to the physicochemical parameters and indicators of water quality. The bacteriological characteristics including total and fecal coliforms, fecal enterococci, Salmonella spp. and Staphylococcus spp. were also considered. The results revealed that SAR and SSP values were excellent for irrigation. A Wilcox diagram showed that most of the samples fell in the field of C3-S1 indicating high salinity and low sodium water. The physicochemical results indicated that most of parameters are in conformity with standards except ammonia NH4+ and total nitrogen that are higher than the permissible limit of USEPA and FAO. The average concentrations of heavy metals are low compared with the FAO recommendations. However, the bacteriological analyses confirmed the existence of germs indicating a fecal contamination exceeding the WHO regulations but an absence of pathogenic germs. Hence, the disinfection of this water and an adequate treatment is needed before its use for agricultural purposes. The food processing industries produce large volumes of wastewaters but poor management has resulted to environmental problems. The reuse of such wastewaters as organic fertilizer containing essential plant nutrients for irrigational purposes is an attractive management strategy. The improper disposal and poor management of these wastewaters from some selected food industries within Makurdi, necessitated the assessment of the physicochemical characteristics, mineral constituents and water quality indices in comparison with FAO and WHO standard limits. Three (3) wastewater samples were collected from Seraph Oil Mill (SOWW), Miva Rice Nigeria Limited (MRWW), and Chile Fish Farm (CFWW). The wastewater samples were analyzed for the physicochemical properties and mineral elements using standard methods and micro-wave plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (MP-AES) respectively, and water quality indices calculated. The results of the physicochemical parameters revealed pH values ranging from 5.63 ± 0.57 to 7.60 ± 0.03, electric conductivity from 2.72 ± 0.01 to 206.5 ± 0.47 µScm−1, viscosity from 1.73 ± 0.01 to 93.3 ± 0.58 mPa.S, total solids (TS) ranged from 0.039 ± 0.001 to 3.02 ± 0.1 mgL−1, chemical oxygen demand (COD) ranged from 53.9 ± 4.7 26, 336.7 ± 398.0 mgL−1 while biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) ranged from 13.8 ± 0.92 to 23.3 ± 1.35 mgL−1. The mineral concentrations of P, K, Ca, Mg, Zn, Fe, Na, S, NO3, Cu, Pb, Cr ranged from below detection limit −280.13 ± 1.07 mgL−1 for SOWW wastewater, 0.04 ± 0.003-2344.02 ± 0.09 mgL−1 for MRWW wastewater and 0.017 ± 0.002–501.29 ± 0.09 mgL−1 in CFWW wastewater. All the heavy metals tested were within the permissible limits except for lead (Pb), with the value 0.103 ± 0.003 in SOWW sample. The microbial loads of the samples (total bacteria and total fungi) ranged from 0.72 x 106–13.0 x 106 and 0–14.0 x 104 respectively. The analysis revealed that there was no significance difference between the physicochemical properties and mineral compositions at p≤0.05. The water quality indices for the wastewaters irrigation suitability showed; 6.06–22.91% Sodium adsorption rate (SAR), 22.75–72.00% sodium (% Na), 9.66–31.89% soluble sodium (SSP), 7.91–29.50 magnesium absorption ratio (MR), 1.74–132.16 mg/L total dissolved solutes (TDS) and 0.11–0.46 Kelley’s ratio (KR). The findings indicated that the wastewaters were suitable for irrigation purposes except for the unsuitable values of Na % (72%) in SOWW. The overall water quality of the studied wastewaters is suitable for the growth of vegetables and other crops. This study will establish a baseline data for future research, because little/no information is available about the comparability and utilization of these wastewaters. If properly applied, these wastewaters can be used for the recycling of nutrients for vegetable irrigation, reduce pollution from indiscriminate disposal, and improve water quality.

ABSTRACTClimate and LULC changes have a great influence on the hydrological processes which include evapotranspiration, infiltration, surface runoff, groundwater flow, and stream discharge regime. This study aims to review the existing literature on the impacts of climate, and LULC changes on the sustainability of irrigation water in West Africa. The future of irrigation in West Africa will be driven by strong external factors, such as rapid population growth, climate change, and LULC change. The annual average temperature is between 25.9 and 34°C. Rising temperatures have affected all sectors, including water resources, increased irrigation demand, and the sustainability of agricultural production. Reduction in precipitation will reduce river flows and increase evaporation due to a drier atmosphere, thereby reducing the amount of water available in reservoirs for irrigation. The current demand for freshwater in West Africa for irrigation purposes is expected to triple by 2050. From 1997 to 2018, forest area decreased by 24.6%, while residential and agricultural land areas increased by 140% and 11.7%, respectively, in West Africa. Effective mitigation and adaptation measures are the policy issue for the observed adverse impacts of future climate and LULC changes on the sustainability of irrigation water availability in West Africa.

Morocco, like other arid and semi-arid countries, faces a growing water shortage, necessitating the exploration of alternative solutions. This study investigates the potential use of untreated urban wastewater for irrigation and environmental impact mitigation, focusing on El Jadida as a case study. Throughout the year 2023, from January to December, a comprehensive characterization of physico-chemical, heavy metal, and biological parameters of this unconventional water source was conducted to account for seasonal variations, particularly between rainy and sunny periods. Samples were collected at the inlet of the El Jadida wastewater pre-treatment plant (WWTP) to assess the city's net pollution levels. Results indicate high values for chemical oxygen demand (COD = 741 mg/L), biological oxygen demand (BOD5 = 344 mg/L), organic load (BOD5/COD ratio = 2.2), and biodegradability, suggesting a strong need for biological treatment. Despite compliance with discharge standards, concentrations of heavy metals such as mercury (Hg), cadmium (Cd), aluminum (Al), manganese (Mn), and fluoride ions (F-) exceed Moroccan irrigation water quality thresholds by 90%, 66.7%, 21.8%, 33.3%, and 86.1%, respectively. Therefore, advanced chemical treatment is highly recommended to mitigate environmental impact and ensure safe reuse for irrigation. The novelty of this study lies in evaluating the suitability of El Jadida's wastewater for irrigation and environmental impact mitigation, underscoring the critical need for effective treatment solutions to enhance water sustainability in Morocco. Future research will focus on optimizing water treatment processes.
