Biochar application has widely been used to improve crop yield, but its effectiveness is uncertain. Soil microbial communities may play critical roles, but we lack experimental evidences on the relationships between these communities and crop yield following biochar application. Here, we used cooccurrence networks to demonstrate the importance of ecological clusters (cooccurring taxa of soil microbes including bacteria and fungi) and to identify specific keystone species that were closely connected with the variations in crop yield in a pot experiment. The experiment included two soils (i.e., red soil and yellow-cinnamon soil) for wheat growth, with each soil receiving three biochar application rate. The grain yield in the red soil significantly increased while that in the yellow-cinnamon soil significantly decreased with the biochar application rate. Generally, the grain yield from the two soils showed close correlations with the relative abundance as well as with the diversity of keystone species within major clusters rather than with the soil properties and enzyme activities. This contrasting effectiveness was mainly associated with the enrichment of beneficial and suppression of detrimental keystone species in the red soil and the suppression of beneficial and enrichment of detrimental keystone species in the yellow-cinnamon soil. These species together mainly accounted for the variation in the relative abundance of keystone species within major clusters of each soil, suggesting their potential to affect crop yield following biochar application.

SnSe is a promising anode material in sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) due to its high theoretical capacity (780 mA h g−1) and natural abundance. Herein, we report SnSe nanoplates vertically grown on nitrogen-doped carbon (SnSe/NC) with strong Sn-C bonding for high-performance anode in SIBs, which are synthesized by a facial cation-exchange strategy. The vertically grown SnSe nanoplates with large interplanar spacing (0.58 nm), strong electronic coupling of Sn-C bonding between SnSe and NC facilitate the fast electron/ion transfer, enabling high pseudocapacitive Na-ion storage and enhanced power capability. Density functional theory calculations demonstrate that the presence of N heteroatoms in NC matrix has a pivotal influence on the formation of Sn-C bonding to stabilize the SnSe/NC structure. Moreover, the SnSe nanoplates of SnSe/NC exhibits low interlayer Na+ diffusion barrier (0.1 eV) and low energy barrier (0.14 eV/uc) from discharged product to pristine SnSe/NC, implying the fast Na+ diffusion capability and good reversibility. Consequently, the SnSe/NC exhibits large capacities of 723 and 88 mA h g−1 at 0.025 and 20 A g−1, respectively, and 82% capacity retention for over 200 cycles at 2 A g−1, boosting promising applications in high-performance SIBs.

Many works have been performed to understand the mechanisms of the formation and persistence of memory. However, it is not fully understood whether the decay of long-term memory can be modulated by the activation of dopamine D1 receptor. A Barnes maze task was employed to measure long-term spatial memory. We observed that the spatial memory acquired through 3 trials per session for 4 days had begun to fade out by the 14th day and had completely disappeared by 21 days after the first probe test. The intraperitoneal administration of SKF 38393 (a dopamine D1 receptor agonist) for 7 days beginning on the 14th day after the first probe test prevented natural memory forgetting, and the intraperitoneal administration of SCH 23390 (a dopamine D1 receptor antagonist) prevented this memory persistence. In the Western blotting, the administration of SKF 38393 increased the phosphorylation levels of PKA, ERK1/2, CaMKII, and CREB in the hippocampus. In addition, such increased levels were decreased by the corresponding antagonist (SCH 23390). Moreover, the inhibition of PKA could completely reverse the preservation of spatial memory induced by dopamine D1 receptor activation. These results suggest that the activation of the dopamine D1 receptor plays a critical role in the persistence of long-term spatial memory through the PKA signaling pathway.

Money laundering (ML) is the behavior to conceal the source of money achieved by illegitimate activities, and always be a fast process involving frequent and chained transactions. How can we detect ML and fraudulent activity in large scale attributed transaction data (i.e. tensors)? Most existing methods detect dense blocks in a graph or a tensor, which do not consider the fact that money are frequently transferred through middle accounts. CubeFlow proposed in this paper is a scalable, flow-based approach to spot fraud from a mass of transactions by modeling them as two coupled tensors and applying a novel multi-attribute metric which can reveal the transfer chains accurately. Extensive experiments show CubeFlow outperforms state-of-the-art baselines in ML behavior detection in both synthetic and real data.

Dielectric techniques are fundamental methods for measuring soil water content, and they commonly rely on the conventional laboratory calibration of the dielectric permittivity models between a dielectric constant and water content. As a non‐negligible factor, porosity has been constructed differently in some models as a calibration constant, but the systematic porosity variations during the laboratory model calibration and field applications are not yet well addressed. Based on time‐domain reflectometer laboratory calibration experiments, this study investigated this issue using three preestablished dielectric permittivity models: the Purdue calibration equation (American Society for Testing and Materials model [ASTM]), the complex refractive index model (CRIM), and a piecewise CRIM model (CRIMP). Results demonstrate that a generalized porosity constant used in the calibration would bring in additional structural bias compared with the calibration using variable porosities, and its magnitude varies with the model structure. The deviation of the generalized porosity constant can further amplify the structural bias of ASTM and CRIM for soils with low clay content, but it is insensitive for the soils with high clay content due to the overwhelming role of model structure error. Only the model CRIMP with a “perfect” model structure can effectively cope with the systematic porosity variation and keep a stable built‐in capability for estimating calibration constants from readily available soil data. These findings highlight ignoring porosity variation should not be taken for granted for calibrating and applying the preestablished models.

A sensitive fluorescence strategy was constructed for the detection of α-glucosidase activity based on AgInZnS QDs. The AIZS QDs which were synthesized by hydrothermal method have a fluorescence emission wavelength of 554 nm. Ce4+ was able to oxidize p-phenylenediamine (PPD) to generate oxPPD, which can quench the fluorescence of AIZS QDs through dynamic quenching. When α-glucosidase was introduced into the system, L-ascorbic acid-2-O-α-D-glucopyranosyl (AAG) could be hydrolyzed to form ascorbic acid (AA), which can reduce Ce4+ and prevent the oxidation of PPD. Thus, the dynamic quenching process was blocked accompanying with the fluorescence recovery of AIZS QDs. The developed detection system for α-glucosidase displayed a good linear relationship between 0.01 and 0.16 U·mL−1 with a detection limit of 0.0073 U·mL−1. The sensing platform with high feasibility and anti-interference is a competitive alternative applied to α-glucosidase-related diagnostics.

Long-term nitrogen field fertilization often results in significant changes in nitrifying communities that catalyze a key step in the global N cycle. However, whether microcosm studies are able to inform the dynamic changes in communities of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) and archaea (AOA) under field conditions remains poorly understood. This study aimed to evaluate the transcriptional activities of nitrifying communities under in situ conditions, and we found that they were largely similar to those of 13C-labeled nitrifying communities in the urea-amended microcosms of soils that had received different N fertilization regimens for 22 years. High-throughput sequencing of 16S rRNA genes and transcripts suggested that Nitrosospira cluster 3-like AOB and Nitrososphaera viennensis-like AOA were significantly stimulated in N-fertilized fresh soils. Real-time quantitative PCR demonstrated that the significant increase of AOA and AOB in fresh soils upon nitrogen fertilization could be preserved in the air-dried soils. DNA-based stable-isotope probing (SIP) further revealed the greatest labeling of Nitrosospira cluster 3-like AOB and Nitrosospira viennensis-like AOA, despite the strong advantage of AOB over AOA in the N-fertilized soils. Nitrobacter-like nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB) played more important roles than Nitrospira-like NOB in urea-amended SIP microcosms, while the situation was the opposite under field conditions. Our results suggest that long-term fertilization selected for physiologically versatile AOB and AOA that could have been adapted to a wide range of substrate ammonium concentrations. It also provides compelling evidence that the dominant communities of transcriptionally active nitrifiers under field conditions were largely similar to those revealed in 13C-labeled microcosms. IMPORTANCE The role of manipulated microcosms in microbial ecology has been much debated, because they cannot entirely represent the in situ situation. We collected soil samples from 20 field plots, including 5 different treatments with and without nitrogen fertilizers for 22 years, in order to assess active nitrifying communities by in situ transcriptomics and microcosm-based stable-isotope probing. The results showed that chronic N enrichment led to competitive advantages of Nitrosospira cluster 3-like AOB over N. viennensis-like AOA in soils under field conditions. Microcosm labeling revealed similar results for active AOA and AOB, although an apparent discrepancy was observed for nitrite-oxidizing bacteria. This study suggests that the soil microbiome represents a relatively stable community resulting from complex evolutionary processes over a large time scale, and microcosms can serve as powerful tools to test the theory of environmental filtering on the key functional microbial guilds.

As one of primary biomarkers of ovarian cancer in early stages, β-galactosidase (β-Gal) is significant in the discovery and diagnosis of the disease. In this work, we constructed a multi-signal sensing platform based on silicon nanoparticles (Si NPs) for β-Gal activity determination. When β-Gal was introduced to the sensing system, 2-Nitrophenyl β-D-galactopyranoside (ONPG) could be converted to o-Nitrophenol (o-NP), which had a characteristic absorption peak at 416 nm and the colorless solution turned yellow. The fluorescence emission of Si NPs at 450 nm can be greatly quenched by o-NP as a consequence of inner filter effect (IFE). This dual-signal fluorometric and colorimetric determination approach could be utilized to detect β-Gal in the range of 2-120 U/L and 6-120 U/L. The limits of detection were 1.36 U/L and 1.07 U/L, respectively. This sensing platform could be successfully utilized to detect β-Gal in real samples. Additionally, a visual detection method was designed to achieve quantitative analysis of β-Gal with the assistance of the smartphone.

It is a challenging problem that develops a low-cost, efficient and sustainable technology in order to remove heavy metals and organic contaminants in the practical wastewater. Herein, a novel recyclable Fe3O4/BiVO4/CuS (FBCu) heterojunction photocatalyst was facilely fabricated by a method, coating CuS nanoparticles on the surface of Fe3O4 and BiVO4 simultaneously. FBCu composite not only has the ability to degrade Cr(VI) or methylene blue (MB) alone under visible light irradiation, but also exhibits higher photocatalytic ability in simultaneously removing Cr(VI) and MB mixed pollutants. The superior photocatalytic performance of FBCu is related to the formation of p-n heterojunction, which extends the spectral response and facilitates the efficiency of charge carriers separation and utilization. Moreover, FBCu exhibits satisfactory properties of reusability and stability after five cycling experiments in the Cr(VI)-MB coexistence system. Furthermore, the detailed mechanism for simultaneous removal of mixed pollutants was proposed and verified by DRS results, photoelectrochemical analysis, scavenger experiments and electron spin resonance determination. This work provides a recyclable photocatalyst with eco-friendliness and multifunctional applications in water pollution.

A design method of superconducting synchronous generator for wave energy conversion is proposed to obtain better output performance than the traditional permanent magnet synchronous generator. The generator has a strong magnetic field by the strong magnetic field capture ability of the superconducting bulk magnets. The output performance of superconducting synchronous generator, such as induced voltage, power density and efficiency, is superior to the permanent magnet synchronous generator. The generator model is analyzed by the finite element method to verify the correctness and rationality of the generator design.

In order to realize laser additive manufacturing and damage repair of complex parts with different sizes, an adjustable variable spot size laser cladding optical system is proposed. The system is an off-axis three-mirror optical system, which is composed of three aspherical reflectors. It can adjust the spot size by moving an asperical mirror with an step motor. It can eliminatesolves the problem of light energy loss fixed spot size of traditional refractive optical systems. The proposed solution is high efficient in complex parts clading process and cost effective. and lift the application limitation of high-power lasers in laser cladding. In this paper, the physical model of off-axis three-mirror optical system is established by means of Zemax software. A 4000 W fiber laser in non-sequence mode was used to simulate the intensity distribution of the spot cross-section. By defocusing, the spot diameter at the working face can change continuously from 6mm to 12mm.

Vehicles are developing in the direction of energy-saving and electrification. suspension has been widely developed in the field of vehicles as a key component. Traditional hydraulic energy-supply suspensions dissipate vibration energy as waste heat to suppress vibration. This part of the energy is mainly generated by the vehicle engine. In order to effectively utilize the energy of this part, the energy-regenerative suspension with energy recovery converts the vibrational energy into electrical energy as the vehicle’s energy supply equipment. This article reviews the hydraulically powered suspension of vehicles with energy recovery. The importance of such suspension in vehicle energy recovery is analyzed. The main categories of energy-regenerative suspension are illustrated from different energy recovery methods, and the research status of hydraulic energy-regenerative suspension is comprehensively analyzed. Important factors that affect the shock-absorbing and regenerative characteristics of the suspension system are studied. In addition, some unresolved challenges are also proposed, which provides a reference value for the development of energy-regenerative suspension systems for hybrid new energy vehicles

In this work, we study the lepton-number-violating processes of $K^\pm$ and $D^\pm$ mesons. Two quasi-degenerate sterile neutrinos are assumed to induce such processes. Different with the case where only one sterile neutrino involves, here, the CP phases of the mixing parameters could give sizable contribution. This, in turn, would affect the absolute values of the mixing parameters determined by the experimental upper limits of the branching fractions. A general function which express the difference of the mixing parameters for two-generation and one-generation is presented. Special cases with specific relations of the parameters are discussed. Besides, we also thoroughly investigate the CP violation effect of such processes. Although straw decomposition is important for ecosystem fertility and carbon balance, influence of ultraviolet-B (UV-B) radiation and nitrogen (N) deposition on this process is unclear. In this study, UV-B-exposed rice straw was decomposed under different N addition treatments for 15 months to investigate the indirect effects of UV-B radiation on straw chemistry and direct effects of N deposition on decomposition. UV-B exposure during rice plant growth changed the rice straw chemical composition, increasing the concentrations of acid-insoluble fraction (AIF), acid-soluble fraction, and UV-B-absorbing compounds. High N content had a negative effect on decomposition of rice straw exposed to enhanced and ambient UV-B radiation. Both AIF concentration and FTIR peak intensities indicated that lignin in rice straw was selectively preserved following N addition and UV-B radiation, reducing straw decomposition rate, which corresponded to lower activities of lignin-degrading enzymes in the later stage of decomposition. Thus, enhanced UV-B radiation during rice plant growth produced more recalcitrant substrates (lignin) and N reacted with lignin to produce more resistant compounds, further decreasing straw decomposition rate. UV-B radiation during plant growth and N deposition inhibit litter decomposition in agroecosystem, and their effects should be considered when establishing biogeochemical models in response to global changes.

Elevated CO2 and nitrogen addition can increase rice yield and stimulate rice to absorb more nutrients from the soil. The aim of this study was to investigate how soil organic carbon and aggregates change under such high-output conditions. Rice cultivars IIY 084 and WYJ 21 (strong and weak response to elevated CO2, respectively) were planted in free-air CO2 enrichment (FACE) platforms. Treatments included: 1) elevated CO2 without nitrogen addition (EC); 2) nitrogen addition and ambient CO2 (EN); 3) combined elevated CO2 and nitrogen addition (ECEN); and 4): ambient CO2 without N addition (CK). Soil organic carbon (SOC), readily-oxidizable organic carbon (ROC) and soil aggregate components were measured. Treatment EC increased SOC and ROC, while EN decreased SOC and ROC compared to CK in soil under either rice cultivar. EC and EN decreased the percentage of large macroaggregates (LM) and the mean weight diameter (MWD) of aggregates compared to CK in ‘WYJ 21’ soil, while they increased LM and MWD in ‘IIY 084’ soil. ECEN increased LM and MWD compared to CK in soil under either rice cultivar. High productivity of ‘IIY 084’ through long-term cultivation under current N fertilization in future climatic conditions of elevated CO2 could be achieved due to increased soil aggregate stability and SOC.

A 2-year field experiment was conducted on the North China Plain to assess the effects of two straw management practices and different nitrogen fertilizer addition levels on soil organic matter (SOM) fractions and microbial properties under a winter wheat-summer maize cropping system. Eight treatments (two straw management practices and four nitrogen fertilizer input levels) were established using a randomized complete block design. The straw management practices were no straw return and straw return. Each straw management practice received nitrogen fertilizer rates at 0 (N0), 270 (N270), 360 (N360), or 450 (N450) kg N ha−1 year−1. The soil properties measured included SOM fractionation, enzyme activities, community level physiology profile (CLPP), and microbial community abundance and composition, which were represented by phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA). Compared to no straw return, the addition of straw significantly increased soil total organic carbon and nitrogen, particulate organic carbon and nitrogen, and occluded particulate organic carbon and hot water extractable organic carbon by 7–29%. Invertase, protease, urease, and dehydrogenase activities increased by 22–40%. The biomasses of Gram-positive bacteria and fungi also increased. The increase in SOM fractions may be attributed to the decomposition of the added straw by more active enzymes, which may result from the shift of microbial community composition. In addition, hot-water extractable organic carbon, NO3-N, urease activity, and fungal biomass in the N270, N360, and N450 treatments significantly increased, independent of the nitrogen application rate, which indicated that N input level had a non-linear effect on soil properties in this area. Short-term straw return combined with a modest nitrogen fertilizer input (270 kg N ha−1 year−1) can increase SOM contents and microbial activity, which may help improve soil fertility in this region.

In situ vapour grown carbon fibres (VGCFs) were fabricated on carbon felt by chemical vapour infiltration. In this work, the different conditions of the preparation process were determined to obtain VGCFs in large quantities, namely pressure in the reactor and concentration of the aqueous catalyst precursor solution. Observations regarding the growth process of the VGCFs reveal that the catalyst particles with a round shape and diameters of 1 μm or above are most likely to produce VGCFs. The final results indicate that the diameters of VGCFs range from 80 to 150 nm and that their lengths range from 5 to 30 μm. Furthermore, the lengthening and thickening processes of VGCFs were proved to occur simultaneously in the experiment.

Structural changes in fulvic acid (FA) in response to fertilization strategies, especially P-deficiency fertilization, have critical implications for soil carbon dynamics. This study examined how long-term fertilization influenced chemical compositions of soil FA and its humification degree. Advanced solid-state 13C nuclear magnetic resonance techniques were used to evaluate structural changes of FAs from two soils (a Fluvisol and an Anthrosol) under four fertilizer treatments: organic fertilizer combined with or without NPK fertilizer (OF and NPKOF), deficient in phosphorus only (NK) and Control. The greater aromaticity, hydrophobicity and alkyl/O-alkyl (A/O-A) ratios of FAs were observed in the Anthrosol than in the Fluvisol. The Anthrosol FAs contained more alkyl and aromatic C but fewer O-alkyls (mostly being protonated) than did the Fluvisol FAs. Both FAs comprised some nonprotonated aromatics, which decreased with applications of organic and NK fertilizers. This trend was less obvious for the Anthrosol than for the Fluvisol. Organic fertilizer treatments (OF and NPKOF) in the Fluvisol increased the A/O-A ratio and aromaticity compared with P-deficient soils (NK and Control), indicating organic fertilization promoted the humification degree of its FA. The NK treatment in the Fluvisol increased H/C ratio of FA. Compared with the Fluvisol FAs, the Anthrosol FAs displayed similar chemical natures, implying their formation followed similar processes with a similar humification degree. The findings suggest that long-term fertilization differently influenced the FAs from the Fluvisol and Anthrosol. Clearly, the Anthrosol FAs shared more common features among the treatments compared with the Fluvisol FAs, whereas P-deficiency rendered the Fluvisol FAs simpler.

Soil microorganisms are considered the most effective decomposers of applied crop residues, but it is poorly understood which communities are primarily responsible for decomposition under different conditions. A pot experiment was conducted in a greenhouse to follow the cycling of C and N derived from maize (Zea mays L.) residues labeled with both 13C and 15N to a subsequent winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) crop and to soil pools under planting with winter wheat (+P) or an unplanted control (–P), both in soil maintained at field moisture capacities of 40% and 80%. Soil microbes involved in residue decomposition were investigated by 13C phospholipid fatty acid (13C-PLFA) analysis technique. At wheat maturity, a total of 68% of residue N was recovered in the +P treatments, in which 26% was recovered from wheat plants and another 42% from soil total N (TN), independent of the water regimes, while only 50% was recovered from TN in the –P treatments. More residue C was recovered as soil organic carbon in +P than –P treatments (33% vs. 27%), and the trend became more significant with soil moisture. In addition, the +P soil had 35–48% larger microbial biomass carbon (MBC) than the –P soil, and more residue C was recovered as MBC in +P than –P treatments (7% vs. 4%), suggesting the induced microbial utilization of the applied residues. The distribution of the residue-derived PLFA-C showed that only 16:1ω7c and 18:1ω7c had larger relative abundances in the +P than the –P soils, suggesting that they were mainly stimulated by the presence of wheat and that they may be the most important fatty acids to define the different recoveries of residue N and C between the planted and unplanted conditions. Our results demonstrate that the enhanced recovery of residue-C and -N by the presence of wheat plants was mainly from the induced microbial utilization of applied residues by altering the activities of specific microorganisms.

Conservation tillage has been gaining increasing recognition for its role in improving soil quality and maintaining agricultural sustainability. This is the first in a series of papers describing the impacts of reduced/no-tillage with and without residue based on the field experiment in the North China Plain. The experiment was established in 2006 on a sandy loam soil and involved a winter wheat-summer maize rotation system per year. The objective of this study was to investigate the impacts of different conservation tillage systems on crop yield and soil fertility that was quantified by a minimum data set and integrated index. Soil samples were collected since 2011, and the stocks of soil organic matter (SOM), total nitrogen (TN), alkali-hydrolyzale nitrogen (AN), total phosphorus (TP), available phosphorus (AP), total potassium (TK) and available potassium (AK) were measured for each year as well as soil aggregates were fractionated for 2016. Compared to continuous tillage, the reduced/no-tillage, regardless of residue, significantly increased the macroaggregate mass and soil nutrient stocks at the 0–10 cm depth, while further improvements in these soil attributes apart from TK were observed at the 0–10 and 10–20 cm depths for residue returning relative to residue removing. The accumulations of soil nutrients were closely related to soil macroaggregation. The path analysis revealed that TN was the most important soil attribute to directly determine wheat and maize yields while other soil attributes apart for TK primarily made indirect contributions to the yields. The first two factors extracted using 8 soil attributes through factor analysis were selected as the integrated indicators for the minimum data set, and their integrated score was calculated to quantify soil fertility. It was found that reduced/no-tillage did not improved soil fertility at the 0–20 cm depth. Consequently, an average 6.9% decrease in wheat yield across all years was observed under no-tillage while reduced tillage only increased the yield in the first two years in a periodic reduced tillage event. No significant difference was observed for the mean maize yield among the three tillage regimes averaged across all years and residue managements. Wheat and maize yields were significantly correlated with the integrated score for soil fertility, and thus significant increases in grain yields of wheat and maize were observed for residue returning. It can be concluded that grain yields of wheat and maize within a given residue management practice were not significantly higher for reduced/no-tillage than continuous tillage, regardless of the effects of tillage on aggregates and soil nutrients.

The formation of aggregates plays a key role in shaping soil microenvironment, which in turn influences microbial community structure and organic carbon (C) dynamics in soil. The objective of this study was to identify the linkages between soil macroaggregation and microbial community as well as organic C accumulation using field samples following 9 years of conservation tillage. A wet-sieving method was used to fractionate soil aggregates and soil microbial abundance and community composition were determined using phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) analysis. Compared to continuous tillage, reduced/no-tillage and straw returning significantly promoted soil macroaggregation and consequently increased organic C, C/N ratio and soil moisture but decreased the porosity and computed effective oxygen diffusion coefficients. The changes in these soil characteristics were closely related to the abundance and composition of microbial community. The abundance of microbial PLFAs in reduced/no-tillage soils was 30.0% higher in Gram-positive bacteria, 11.6% higher in Gram-negative bacteria, 71.7% higher in fungi and 45.4% lower in actinobacteria, whereas straw returning significantly increased all microbial PLFA abundances relative to straw removing. The ratios of bacteria/fungi (B/F) and monounsaturated/branched (M/B) PLFAs were significantly correlated with the volumetric soil water content, porosity, or computed effective oxygen diffusion coefficients. Soil macroaggregation and microbial community composition collectively explained 82.4% variation in organic C accumulation and their interaction made the largest contribution. Overall, soil macroaggregation under conservation tillage might cause a shift in microbial community to more fungi and anaerobes through primarily influencing soil moisture and aeration, which could effectively promote organic C accumulation in soil.

MoS2 is promising anode material in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) because of its layered structure analogous to that of graphite and high lithium storage capacity of 670 mAh g-1. However, practical implementation in LIBs is hindered by the poor conductivity, large volume change, and possible polysulfide shuttling during cycling. In this work, oriented MoS2 nanoflakes grown on N-doped carbon nanosheets (MoS2/NC) are investigated as high-performance anodes in LIBs. The materials are prepared by annealing dodecylamine intercalated MoO3 nanosheets under Ar at 400 oC followed by a hydrothermal treatment in the thiourea (CH4N2S) solution at 220 oC for 30 h. In the MoS2/NC structure, the NC nanosheets constitute the long-range conductive network for fast electron transfer, whereas the oriented MoS2 nanoflakes provide sufficient active sites for Li+ storage and fast Li+ diffusion along a-b plane. Consequently, the MoS2/NC electrode shows a remarkable capacity of 803 mAh g-1 at a current density of 100 mA g-1, a high rate capability of 554 mAh g-1 at 2000 mA g-1 and excellent cycle stability. Our results reveal a facile and general method to produce high-performance heterostructured MoS2/NC anodes and the process can be extended to other metal dichalcogenides for future high-performance LIBs.

Microorganisms mobilize phosphorus (P) from soil and make it available for plants. However, the role of microbial activity in soil P dynamics especially among different P pools is poorly understood largely due to methodological limitations. In this study, we analyzed the oxygen isotope ratios in phosphate (δ18OP) of sequentially extracted inorganic P (Pi) pools (H2O-Pi, NaHCO3-Pi, NaOH-Pi, and HCl-Pi) in a long-term agricultural research field in Henan, China with different fertilization histories and coupled with soil enzyme activity and P-cycling bacteria gene abundance studies. Results showed the dominant enzymes were alkaline phosphatase (APase) and phosphodiesterase (PDE), and the functional genes for P-cycling were bpp, cphy, phoX and pqqC. After long-term P fertilization, the δ18OP values of H2O-Pi, NaHCO3-Pi and NaOH-Pi pools approached to or achieved equilibrium, suggesting that the externally applied P was actively mobilized and cycled by soil microorganisms and speciated into different P pools. Based on the extent of isotope excursion among different Pi pools, the equilibrium fractionation oriented the source signature in the NaHCO3-Pi and NaOH-Pi pools, and HCl-Pi pool could be derived from P fertilizer but through multistep reactions, and mixed with the HCl-Pi from rock weathering product, which constituted HCl-Pi pool in the non-P treatments. Overall, the long-term P fertilization especially the balanced fertilization with nitrogen (N), P and potassium (K) was found to be beneficial for extensive utilization of soil P with abundant biological uptake and cell-internal Pi cycling. Variation partitioning analysis (VPA) indicated that the expression of functional genes may be stimulated to mobilize soil P under specific P pools distribution in this alkaline environment. Overall, our findings provide new insights to understand the roles of microbial activities in soil P biogeochemistry that are useful for agricultural P sustainability.

Spatial variability and influential factors are important to evaluate soil organic C (SOC) and the C pool in large areas. In the present study, sampling was conducted from May to November 2011 in Henan Province, a typical agricultural region of Central China, to study the effects of soil properties and anthropogenic factors on SOC variability in cropland. Physicochemical properties of soil samples collected at 280 sites from the surface layer (at a depth of 0–20 cm) were analyzed, and related data about the sampling sites were also collected from the Second State Soil Survey of China, conducted in 1981. Firstly, we found increasing trends in SOC density (SOCD) and SOC pool (SOCP) were obvious from 1981 to 2011, and we concluded that cropland presents great C sequestration potential for the future. Carbon pool ability varied with soil properties: the order of fixed Camount in different soil types was found to be Inceptisols > Luvisols > semihydromorphic soil > Anthrosols, and the average SOCP increased significantly from 1981 to 2011. Secondly, soil bulk density, pH, and returning straw were the key influential factors for SOCD in the past 30 yr. Thirdly, although random factors (returning straw) only explain 29.1% of SOCD variability, more attention should be paid to the factors, because application of returning straw was the most dominant anthropogenic factor, which can be used to improve cropland productivity and C sink capacity within a short period if they are properly managed in the future.

Ethnopharmacological relevance The seeds of Ziziphus jujuba var. spinosa (Bunge) Hu ex H.F Chow (Rhamnaceae) and the roots of Codonopsis lanceolata (Siedbold & Zucc.) Benth. & Hook. f ex Trautv. (Campanulaceae), contained in the DHP1402, have long been used for treating dementia or hypomnesia as folk medicine. Aim of the study It has been reported that Z. jujuba var. spinosa and C. lanceolata are effective in improving cognitive function, but via different mechanisms. Therefore, in the present study, we evaluated the synergistic effects of Z. jujuba var. spinosa and C. lanceolata on scopolamine-induced memory impairment. Materials and methods Scopolamine, a cholinergic muscarinic receptor antagonist, was used to induce cognitive dysfunction. We employed several behavioral tasks to estimate the synergistic effect of the seeds of Z. jujuba var. spinosa and the roots of C. lanceolata . In addition, we introduced the Western blotting, the antagonism passive avoidance task to investigate a synergistic effect of an herbal formulation. Results Synergistic effects of a combination of Z. jujuba var. spinosa and C. lanceolata at a 5:1 ratio [(w/w), DHP1402] were observed against cognitive dysfunction in the passive avoidance and Y-maze tasks. DHP1402 also ameliorated memory deficits in a dose-dependent manner in these behavioral tasks, as well as in the Morris water maze task. According to the Western blot results, the phosphorylation levels of protein kinase A (PKA), extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) and cAMP response element-binding protein (CREB) in the hippocampus were also increased in a synergistic manner after the administration of DHP1402. In addition, we found that the effects of DHP1402 on cognitive function were mediated by N -methyl- D -aspartate (NMDA) receptor signalling, based on the antagonism studies. Furthermore, we found that DHP1402 has inhibitory activity against acetylcholinesterase (AChE). Conclusion DHP1402 attenuates cholinergic blockade-induced cognitive dysfunction through NMDA receptor modulation, PKA-ERK-CREB pathway activation, and AChE inhibition. Therefore, DHP1402 could be a candidate for alleviating cognitive dysfunction.

Irrigation and nitrogen (N) fertilization in excess of crop requirements are responsible for substantial nitrate accumulation in the soil profile and contamination of groundwater by nitrate leaching during intensive agricultural production. In this on-farm field trial, we compared 16 different water and N treatments on nitrate accumulation and its distribution in the soil profile (0-180cm), nitrate leaching potential, and groundwater nitrate concentration within a summer-maize (Zea mays L.) and winter-wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) rotation system in the Huang-Huai-Hai Plain over five cropping cycles (2006-2010). The results indicated that nitrate remaining in the soil profile after crop harvest and nitrate concentration of soil solutions at two depths (80cm and 180cm) declined with increasing irrigation amounts and increased greatly with increasing N application rates, especially for seasonal N application rates higher than 190kgNha-1. During the experimental period, continuous torrential rainfall was the main cause for nitrate leaching beyond the root zone (180cm), which could pose potential risks for contamination of groundwater. Nitrate concentration of groundwater varied from 0.2 to 2.9mgL-1, which was lower than the limit of 10mgL-1 as the maximum safe level for drinking water. In view of the balance between grain production and environmental consequences, seasonal N application rates of 190kgNha-1 and 150kgNha-1 were recommended for winter wheat and summer maize, respectively. Irrigation to the field capacity of 0-40cm and 0-60cm soil depth could be appropriate for maize and wheat, respectively. Therefore, taking grain yields, mineral N accumulation in the soil profile, nitrate leaching potential, and groundwater quality into account, coupled water and N management could provide an opportunity to promote grain production while reducing negative environmental impacts in this region.

Hybrid lithium-ion capacitors (LICs) are promising energy storage systems which could deliver higher energy density without compromising the high power and cycle life of supercapacitors. WO3 is an appealing anode material for LICs due to its high theoretical capacity of 696 mA h g−1 for Li+ storage. However, the practical implementation of WO3 in LICs is limited by its low conductivity, sluggish kinetics and large volume changes during cycles. Herein, we report a “hitting three birds with one stone” strategy for the synthesis of heterogeneous phosphorus-doped WO3−x/N-doped carbon (P-WO3−x/NC) nanowires, which are prepared via the calcination of organic–inorganic hybrid WO3/ethylenediamine(EDA) nanowires in Ar and subsequent thermal phosphorization. The EDA molecules are carbonized into a 1D NC matrix and WO3 layers are converted into P-WO3−x nanocrystals which are in situ embedded in the continuous 1D NC matrix forming a well-defined 0D-in-1D hybrid structure. The small P-WO3−x nanocrystals offer short paths for Li+ diffusion and the continuous NC matrix facilitates electron transport and buffers the volume change of P-WO3−x during discharging/charging. The oxygen vacancies and P heteroatoms with smaller electronegativity result in enhanced electrochemical activity due to the higher degree of covalent bonding and sharing electrons. The P-WO3−x/NC nanowires are expected to act as high-performance anodes for LICs with high capacity, high rate and long life via the synergistic effect of P dopants and oxygen vacancies as well as the in situ formed conductive carbon matrix. Our results show that the P-WO3−x/NC nanowire electrode delivers a high capacity of 490 mA h g−1 at 1 A g−1 and a high rate capacity of 230 mA h g−1 at 3.2 A g−1. Moreover, the P-WO3−x/NC nanowires exhibit excellent cycle reversibility with 96.2% capacity retention over 2000 cycles at 1 A g−1. A 4.3 V LIC prototype composed of the P-WO3−x/NC anode with a commercial activated carbon cathode shows an ultra-high energy density of 195.58 W h kg−1 at 597.2 W kg−1 with 90.7% retention over 6000 cycles. These promising results provide fundamental insight into the synthesis of high-performance electrode materials for advanced electrochemical energy storage.

Soil organic carbon (SOC) is the key to soil fertility and quality. However, SOC has severely declined in the past several decades due in part to inappropriate nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) input levels. Thus far, the influences of N and P input levels on the accrual of different SOC fractions and relevant microbial traits at aggregate scales remain uncertain. Here, a 3-year field experiment was used to reveal the effects of N and P input levels on SOC fractions in a Mollisol. Treatments included straw return (SR) and combinations of high nitrogen (N) and high phosphorus (P) inputs (N + P + SR), high N and low P inputs (N + P1/2 + SR), and low N and high P inputs (N1/2 + P + SR). The dynamic architecture of the human brain has been consistently observed. However, there is still limited modeling work to elucidate how neuronal circuits are hierarchically and flexibly organized in functional systems. Here we proposed a reachable probability approach based on non-homogeneous Markov chains, to characterize all possible connectivity flows and the hierarchical structure of brain functional systems at the dynamic level. We proved at the theoretical level the convergence of the functional brain network system, and demonstrated that this approach is able to detect network steady states across connectivity structure, particularly in areas of the default mode network. We further explored the dynamically hierarchical functional organization centered at the primary sensory cortices. We observed smaller optimal reachable steps to their local functional regions, and differentiated patterns in larger optimal reachable steps for primary perceptual modalities. The reachable paths with the largest and second largest transition probabilities between primary sensory seeds via multisensory integration regions were also tracked to explore the flexibility and plasticity of the multisensory integration. The present work provides a novel approach to depict both the stable and flexible hierarchical connectivity organization of the human brain.

Artificial intelligence (AI) coupled with promising machine learning (ML) techniques well known from computer science is broadly affecting many aspects of various fields including science and technology, industry, and even our day-to-day life. The ML techniques have been developed to analyze high-throughput data with a view to obtaining useful insights, categorizing, predicting, and making evidence-based decisions in novel ways, which will promote the growth of novel applications and fuel the sustainable booming of AI. This paper undertakes a comprehensive survey on the development and application of AI in different aspects of fundamental sciences, including information science, mathematics, medical science, materials science, geoscience, life science, physics, and chemistry. The challenges that each discipline of science meets, and the potentials of AI techniques to handle these challenges, are discussed in detail. Moreover, we shed light on new research trends entailing the integration of AI into each scientific discipline. Schizophrenia is a chronic psychotic disorder characterized by positive, negative, and cognitive symptoms. Primary treatments for schizophrenia relieve the positive symptoms but are less effective against the negative and cognitive symptoms. In the present study, we investigated whether maslinic acid, isolated from Syzygium aromaticum (clove), can ameliorate schizophrenia-like behaviors in mice induced by MK-801, an N-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonist. After maslinic acid treatment in the MK-801 model, we examined the behavioral alteration and signaling pathways in the prefrontal cortex. Mice were treated with maslinic acid (30 mg/kg), and their behaviors were evaluated through an array of behavioral tests. The effects of maslinic acid were also examined in the signaling pathways in the prefrontal cortex. A single administration of maslinic acid blocked the MK-801-induced hyperlocomotion and reversed the MK-801-induced sensorimotor gating deficit in the acoustic startle response test. In the social novelty preference test, maslinic acid ameliorated the social behavior deficits induced by MK-801. The MK-801-induced attention and recognition memory impairments were also alleviated by a single administration of maslinic acid. Furthermore, maslinic acid normalized the phosphorylation levels of Akt-GSK-3β and ERK-CREB in the prefrontal cortex. Overall, maslinic acid ameliorated the schizophrenia-like symptoms induced by MK-801, and these effects may be partly mediated through Akt-GSK-3β and ERK-CREB activation. These findings suggest that maslinic acid could be a candidate for the treatment of several symptoms of schizophrenia, including positive symptoms, sensorimotor gating disruption, social interaction deficits, and cognitive impairments.

Recently, niobium-carbide (Nb2C) nanosheets, a member of MXene family, have gained significant attention because of their unique physical and chemical properties. Here, the few-layer Nb2C nanosheets were synthesized by a combination of selective etching and liquid cascade centrifugation. The broadband absorption properties of the few-layer Nb2C nanosheets were systematically investigated by the open-aperture Z-scan technique. The results indicate the excellent saturable absorption responses of Nb2C nanosheets, revealing the promising optical modulate application of Nb2C in solid-state lasers. Using the Nb2C saturable absorber (SA), passively Q-switched solid-state lasers from visible to near-infrared range were realized, which presented a promising alternative for a broadband optical modulator. Furthermore, a passively mode-locked laser at 1.06 μm was successfully achieved based on the Nb2C SA. A pulse duration of 13.5 ps was produced with the maximum average output power of 426 mW and a repetition rate of 99.1 MHz. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time to use Nb2C nanosheets as a broadband SA for the solid-state lasers. The results may promote further applications of 2D optoelectronic materials from visible to near-infrared range.

Fertilization-induced changes in soil properties from the paddy soil and upland soil may directly regulate bacterial community composition, which usually coincide with shifts in molecular composition of soil organic carbon (SOC) in the upland soil. However, systematical comparisons lack on how regulators vary with cropping systems under the same weather conditions and soil parent materials. Here, we simultaneously investigated the changes of soil physicochemical parameters and shifts in the bacterial community and SOC molecular composition in two adjacent rice and maize fields that have received five fertilization regimes for more than 30 years. The separation of the bacterial community composition among the treatments from the paddy soil was mainly determined by soil nitrate-N, and that from the upland soil was mainly determined by soil available P (AP) and pH. The SOC molecular composition from the paddy soil was separated by the treatments with N application or not, with those treatments with N application being enriched with CCH3 and aromatic C C, and those without N application being enriched with aromatic C H. These changed C functional groups showed close association with amorphous Fe2O3. For the upland soil, the SOC molecular composition was separated by the treatments with P application or not, with those treatments with P application being enriched with OCH, and those without P application being enriched with CH/CH2. These changed C functional groups had close association with AP and total P. Our results indicated inconsistent separation patterns and regulators of the bacterial community and SOC molecular composition among the treatments of the paddy soil and upland soil, and suggested that the relatively dominant role of the fertilization-induced changes in soil properties or other soil microbes that controlled the SOC molecular composition over the bacteria measured in the present study.

Ablation behavior of C/C-ZrC-SiC composites was investigated using a plasma flame. The composites exhibited excellent ablation performance. After ablation for 180 s, three kinds of ablation behavior appeared from the border to the center on the surface, which were closely related to the temperature and denudation force. Additionally, the ablation behavior in the cross-sectional direction of the composites was mainly controlled by the temperature. During the ablation, ZrC and SiC were oxidized into ZrO 2 and SiO 2 , respectively, resulting in the formation of a ZrO 2 -SiO 2 binary eutectic system. The ablation mechanism was also discussed, which could provide strong illustration of the evolution processes of the eutectic system at different temperatures.

This paper was primarily devoted to reveal the stock of soil organic carbon (C) as well as its lability and to compare their differences existing among tillage and residue practices, aiming to identify the effects on the accumulation process of organic C and its association with macroaggregation. Arable soils following 8-year contrasting managements were collected to determine aggregate size distribution, organic C content and its lability. A wet-sieving method was used to fractionate aggregate fractions including > 2000 μm large macroaggregates, 2000–250 μm small macroaggregates, 250–53 μm microaggregates, and

Humic substances are recalcitrant and might act as persistent binding agents to form macroaggregates. The focus of this study is in investigating the contribution of humic carbon (HC) to soil aggregation in response to various tillage and residue managements. Arable soils following 8-year contrasting managements were collected to determine aggregate size distribution and stability and HC fractions including humic acid (HA) and fulvic acid (FA). The contribution of HC to aggregation was divided into three special effects including positive effect (PE), negative effect (NE), and combined effect (CE), and these effects were measured using aggregate fractionation techniques. As well as to promote structural stability, HC bounds predominantly with the silt + clay fraction and secondarily with microaggregates to form larger aggregates. The PE increased with increasing aggregate size, whereas the NE followed the opposite pattern. A positive CE was observed for large and small macroaggregates, whereas the CE for microaggregates and the silt + clay fraction was negative. Compared to continuous tillage, reduced- and no-tillage decreased the PE for large and small macroaggregates by 1.58–30.98% at the 0–20 cm depth, and straw returning also slightly decreased the corresponding PE relative to straw removing. By contrast, a significantly higher NE for small macroaggregates at the 0–10 cm depth while 6.33–81.11% decreases in CE for large and small macroaggregates at the 0–10 cm depth as well as for large macroaggregates at the 10–20 cm depth, were observed under reduced- and no-tillage. The extraction of HC significantly reduced the aggregate stability and reduced- and no-tillage effectively limited its decrease magnitude. Small macroaggregates and microaggregates made larger contributions to soil HC accumulation than did other fractions. An averagely increased contribution from large or small macroaggregates was observed under both reduced-/no-tillage and straw returning at the 0–20 cm depth. A significant and positive relationship was found between the mass proportion of macroaggregates and the HC accumulation in 0–20 cm soil. Large macroaggregates had significantly higher HA/FA ratios than small macroaggregates, and reduced- and no-tillage significantly increased these ratios both in large and in small macroaggregates. The CE for large or small macroaggregates was also significantly negatively correlated with their HA/FA ratios. Overall, the HC accumulation in soil is likely to play a key role in macroaggregation, but conservation tillage might decrease the contribution magnitude of HC to large or small macroaggregation through increasing the corresponding HA/FA ratios.

Freestanding film electrode comprising face-to-face alternately stacked 2D TiO2 nanosheets and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) is designed and fabricated as binder-free anode for lithium-ion batteries. The ultrathin TiO2 nanosheets with (001) facet exposed having the lowest Li+ diffusion barrier face-to-face hetero-assembled onto the conductive rGO, the Li+ can swiftly diffuse into the TiO2 nanosheets across the (001) facets with the lowest barrier and short transfer distance. The spectacular configuration of this planary-aligned electrode leads to superior performances than other composite electrodes previously reported, which delivers a large capacity of 132.3 mA h g-1 with capacity retention of 89 % over 1,000 cycles at a high rate of 20 C (1 C = 168 mA g-1). This work proved that controlling the arrangement orientation of electrode materials with anisotropy Li+ diffusion barrier could remarkably improve the electrochemical properties, boosting promising application in high-power energy storage devices.

Nonlinear least squares algorithm is commonly used to fit the evaporation experiment data and to obtain the ‘optimal’ soil hydraulic model parameters. But the major defects of nonlinear least squares algorithm include non-uniqueness of the solution to inverse problems and its inability to quantify uncertainties associated with the simulation model. In this study, it is clarified by applying retention curve and a modified generalised likelihood uncertainty estimation method to model calibration. Results show that nonlinear least squares gives good fits to soil water retention curve and unsaturated water conductivity based on data observed by Wind method. And meanwhile, the application of generalised likelihood uncertainty estimation clearly demonstrates that a much wider range of parameters can fit the observations well. Using the ‘optimal’ solution to predict soil water content and conductivity is very risky. Whereas, 95% confidence interval generated by generalised likelihood uncertainty estimation quantifies well the uncertainty of the observed data. With a decrease of water content, the maximum of nash and sutcliffe value generated by generalised likelihood uncertainty estimation performs better and better than the counterpart of nonlinear least squares. 95% confidence interval quantifies well the uncertainties and provides preliminary sensitivities of parameters.

In the present study, we investigated whether 1-palmitoyl-2-linoleoyl-3-acetylglycerol (PLAG), a component of antlers of Cervus nippon Temminck, would have memory-ameliorating properties against cholinergic blockade-induced memory impairment in mice. In the passive avoidance task to investigate the effects of PLAG on long-term memory, PLAG (10 mg/kg, p.o.) administration ameliorated scopolamine-induced memory impairment. PLAG also reversed the impairments of working memory in the Y-maze task and spatial memory as shown in the Morris water maze. To identify the mechanism of the memory-ameliorating effect of PLAG, acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibition assay and the Western blot analysis were conducted. In the AChE inhibition assay, PLAG inhibited the AChE activity in mice and PLAG increased the expression levels of phosphorylated CaMKII, ERK, and CREB in the hippocampus. Additionally, long-term potentiation (LTP) of synaptic strength occurred by PLAG treatment in the hippocampal cultures. Overall, the present study suggests that PLAG reversed memory deficits in an animal model and that it affects biochemical pathways related to learning and memory.

The rate of ammonia emissions from a small circular plot of maize was estimated by three procedures: (i) by inverse dispersion (based on upwind and downwind laser concentration-detectors interpreted using a backward Lagrangian stochastic model); (ii) by the height-integrated horizontal flux measured by point flux-detectors arrayed along the axis of the plot (i.e., the integrated horizontal flux method, IHF); and (iii) by extrapolation from static flux chambers (SC). The results indicated that the estimates made by the open-path tunable diode laser (OPTDL) system combined with the backward Lagrangian stochastic (BLS) model were statistically equivalent to those made by the IHF method. The ammonia fluxes estimated by the OPTDL-BLS technique were only 2.3% higher than those from the IHF method. Although the OPTDL technique failed to monitor concentration differences at low ammonia fluxes due to its detection limit, the OPTDL-BLS technique estimated the total ammonia loss to be only 10.9% less than the IHF results. The SC method was found to underestimate ammonia emissions and cumulative ammonia loss significantly compared with both the OPTDL-BLS and IHF methods Although the ammonia emissions estimated by the OPTDL-BLS technique showed a similar emission pattern to those estimated by the IHF method, the former provided an opportunity to estimate the diurnal pattern of ammonia emissions and to understanding the primary driving factors. A clear diurnal cycle and a dominant net solar radiation dependence in ammonia emissions were found.
