A case of a 37-year-old woman with radiation optic neuropathy was reported. She had undergone subtotal removal of the right orbital tumor (adenoid cystic carcinoma) by frontal craniotomy, followed by radiation therapy (64Gy). She had been quite well until she noticed a gradual loss of vision in her right eye 18 months later. Her visual acuity was 0.2 in the right eye and 1.5 in the left eye with right relative afferent pupillary defect and dense central scotoma. Funduscopy revealed optic disc swelling with surrounding retinal edema and small hemorrhage in the right eye. Fluorescein angiography revealed a hypoperfusion area and obstruction of the small retinal vessels in the posterior pole, but this was not large enough to explain the dense central scotoma. Although prednisolone therapy gave temporary improvement, the visual function gradually deteriorated.

Automatically driven video camera systems were developed and used for the observation of winter lightning. It was confirmed that the systems were very useful for the research of exceedingly accidental lightning phenomena. Until December 1988, 120 winter lightning flashes struck an isolated tower were taken pictures with the developed systems. The characteristics of winter lightning discharges to the tower were made clear.

We report a formation method and an electrical characterization of aligned arrays of Au nanoparticles (∼20–40 nm). We synthesized the structure by immersing a substrate vertically into a solvent with nanoparticle and letting the solvent evaporate. The periodicity of the arrays has been controlled in 10–40 μm range by tuning the evaporation rate of solvent. The resistivity shows a drastic decrease (∼10−4) when annealed at ∼170 °C. While it is considerably due to a breakdown of ligands surrounding the Au particles, the large change in conductivity should be used for sensors to examine the interface molecules between Au nanoparticles.

A 34-year-old female patient with breast cancer metastasizing to bone had a remission after a course of treatment with medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA) 1,200 mg/day, but again had a metastasis to the lungs. The patient was then instituted on a combination therapy with UFT 400 mg/day, and MPA 1,200 mg/day. As a result, the pulmonary metastasis disappeared, along with the consolidation of the bone involved.

Of 200 lung cancer lesions resected in our hospital, there were 15 cases (7.5%) with middle lobe origin. The histological types were adenocarcinoma in 13 patients (4 patients with alveolar cell carcinoma), squamous cell carcinoma in one and large cell carcinoma in one. These patients were classified into two groups according to the type of operation they received and each group was evaluated. Group I (resection of the middle lobe) included 8 patients. Each one of Stage IIIB and Stage IV received the operation to improve their symptoms. The six patients of Stage I received only middle lobectomy as absolute curable cases. Group II (resection of the middle and lower lobes) included 7 patients, who had preoperative diagnosis of stage III. Two of them were postoperatively found to be cases of Stage I and Stage II. Although it was still short-term, the follow-up evaluation proved that these patients survived without local recurrence and distant metastasis, except for two with pleural dissemination and one with cerebral metastasis, who had received lobectomy as palliative operation. No difference was observed between the two groups receiving different types of operation.

KNbGeO5 (i.e., 25K2O-25Nb2O5-50GeO2) glass with the glass transition 622 °C and crystallization onset 668 °C temperatures shows prominent nanocrystallization, giving K3.8Nb5Ge3O20.4 nanocrystals with the size of ∼30 nm. Dielectric, elastic and mechanical properties of transparent nanocrystallized KNbGeO5 glasses are examined using some techniques such as polarizability analysis, cube resonance spectra and Vickers nanoindentation. Electronic polarizability, shear modulus, bulk modulus, Young’s modulus (E), Debye temperature (θD), Vickers hardness, and deformation energies during nanoindentation increase largely due to the nanocrystallization, e.g., E=64.1 GPa and θD=500 K for the base glass and E=85.5 GPa and θD=575 K for a transparent nanocrystallized glass. The values of Poisson’s ratio and fractal bond connectivity of nanocrystallized glasses are the same as those of the base glass, suggesting that relative arrangements of constituent ions (K+, Nb5+, Ge4+) in nanocrystallized glasses are basically simil...

This case describes an intrauterine fetal death. A fetal ovarian cyst was diagnosed by ultrasound but the fetus died at 36 weeks gestation due to axial torsion of the cyst.

Influence of interference layer that is located between substrate and magnetic layer was studied in FAD structure. The Kerr ellipticity of reflection light could be decreased by using larger thickness than that of minimum reflectivity. This lead to crosstalk reduction in L&G recording that is strongly affected by the Kerr ellipticity. The crosstalk was decreased by 5dB on O.65μm effective track pitch, while CNR was not affected by the thickness.

Our recent research on the magnetic properties of certain soft magnetic ribbons formed by a splat cooling technique as well as studies by K. I. Arai on Si-Fe ribbons of very low losses are reviewed, covering (a) effects of third elements and crystallized conditions on the mechanical and magnetic properties of high silicon-iron ribbons, (b) magnetic properties of 70% Co-Fe, and 12%–14% Al-2% Co-Fe ribbons, and (c) mechanical and magnetic properties of Alfer ribbons.

The shaft furnace process provides the greatest energy efficiency and the highest productivity among all direct reduction processes. Most shaft furnaces producing sponge iron, however, have been designed empirically up to the present. In order to optimize operations a mathematical model has been developed to be applied to shaft furnace design. The model, whose reduction rate equations are derived from the three-interface model, involves both mass and heat balances. The model's rate parameters were determined according to the parameter fitting method, so that calculated values might agree, as closely as possible, with measured values in an experimental shaft furnace with an inside diameter of 0.25 m and a reduction zone height of 2.7 m. Commercial applicability of the mathematical model was also confirmed by simulations in an actual shaft furnace.

In our clinic, 38 patients were diagnosed as proctitis-type ulcerative colitis in these 15 years by the initial clinical assessments.Among the 38 patients, 21 were followed up over 1 year, i.e. over 1 year in 5 patients, over 2 years in 5, over 3 years in 4 and over 5 years in 7.The extent of the disease was determined by barium enema and colonofiberscopy, without using magnifying colonoscopy nor dye-spraying method. During the periods of the follow-up study, 2 patients developed total or left-sided colitis. In the other 19 patients (91%), the extents of the disease were almost unchanged. On the other hand, in 22 patients with total or left-sided colitis followed up over 2 years, 3 developed proctitis-type colitis.These studies indicate most patients with proctitis-type colitis are unchanged in the disease in the course. However, in a few patients there is possible risk to develop total colitis.

Eccentric growth spirals were observed on the (0001) face of SiC crystals synthesized by the Lely method at the Toshiba Central Research Laboratories. Originating from one screw dislocation, mono-molecular spiral layers (step height 15 A, 6H polytype), show increasingly wider step separation in the direction towards the inner portion of the furnance where temperature is lower, and hence supersaturation is higher. Contrary to this, step separations become increasingly narrower approaching the base of the crystal which is more close to the wall of the furnace. This eccentricity is interpreted as due to a supersaturation gradient over the surface. In addition, an observed eccentric growth spiral with a hollow core will be presented and interpreted.

The authors describe an open ended device with a non-planar magnetic axis of which the torsional angle can be changed easily. A wave-form analyzer using a micro-computer has been used to investigate an oscillation of the magnetic field produced by the longitudinal current. This oscillation has been estimated to be a standing Alfven wave. This wave may be partly reflected and partly transmitted through an inflection point of magnetic field lines depending on the torsional angle.

Low-noise InSb thin film Hall elements have been developed as magnetic sensors for audio tape playback. Approximately 1.4-μm thick Hall elements are fabricated by vacuum deposition followed by microzone melting, film thinning, and subsequent heat treatment. After film thinning, electron mobility at room temperature is 6 m2/V . s showing the 1-ppm level impurity concentration. After heat treatment, noise is at the 0.5-μV level for frequencies in the 102-104Hz range and signal-to-noise ratio of the Hall elements is 82 dB in a 1-mT (10-G) magnetic flux density. The device characteristics as functions of dc bias current is successfully computer-simulated, where element Joule heating is taken into account. The calculated results agree quantitatively with the experimental results. For this device modeling, electrical transport properties in InSb crystals are calculated and related to element temperature and ionized-impurity concentrations. In order to apply the Hall elements to audio magnetic heads for cassette tape playing, the head design principle and the head signal-to-noise ratio are clarified for the first time. The advantages of the Hall effect magnetic heads are also discussed.

With the help of UPS spectroscopy, it has been shown that N2O decomposes into N2 and surface Cu2O over copper catalysts in the temperature range −150, −100°C. The surface oxide oxygen dissolved into the bulk above 100°C to some extent.

The properties of phosphors under low voltage cathode ray excitation are investigated. High brightnesses and low threshold voltages have been obtained by the addition of non-luminescent conductive materials to various phosphors, and also by using photoconductive phosphors. It is shown that photoconductivity is also an important factor in addition to dark conductivity. Moreover it has been found that photoconductive Zn-gallate phosphors are effective for low voltage cathode ray excitation.

In this paper a sufficient condition is given for the existence of the global solution as is a sufficient condition for the non-existence of the global solution of the second-order stochastic differential equation with the random disturbance of the so-called white noise.

The long-time behavior of the interactive N-oscillator of the Lienard type with a small parameter $\varepsilon > 0$ is analyzed. The solution of the stochastic differential equation is taken as the response of the oscillator. On the time scale $1/varepsilon$ together with sufficiently large N, by the averaging method, a solution of a stochastic differential equation with mean-field of the McKean type is obtained. While the original system involves a double limit, such as $N \to \infty $, $\varepsilon \to 0$, the commutative role of convergences as $N \to \infty $ and $\varepsilon \to 0$ in the derivation and identification of the limit system can be shown.

Work hardening of long range character for materials with strong inclusions was considered for the case in which plastic relaxation occurs by means of prismatic punching around the inclusions. The model used was a modification of the punching mechanism proposed by Ashby. The stress at an inclusion and the elastic energy arising from the presence of dislocation loops were calculated by using continuum mechanics. The balance between the driving force forprismatic punching produced by a decrease of the elastic energy due to prismatic punching and the retarding force arising from the frictional stress led to a stress-strain relationship after punching. It was found that work hardening was appreciable after considerable punching, although the derivation from linear hardening was significant. The elastically stiffer the inclusion the smaller is the strain required to initiate prismatic punching, but the larger is the increment of flow stress with plastic strain.

It has already been reported that in case of welding by low hydrogen electrodes, the Hot-Start method is quite effective to prevent porosity in starting point of beads, which method is now being adopted for practical use.In order to find out the most effective condition in the current and the time of Hot-Start an experiment with short bead method has been carried out. As the result of X ray inspection for about 350 of the above short beads, time-porosity curves in each Hot-Start current drew our attention and interest. From these curves, we can find two important indices i.e. the severity of porosity elimininating time. By using these indices, we will be able to detect the best conditions of Hot-Start on each kind of the electrodes and furthermore, to make comparison of the prosity preventing caracteristics of two or more kinds of electrodes.

The CTS cracking test of 50kg/mm2 high tensile steel KT and 55kg/mm2 high tensile steel YC and the special cracking test of 60kg/mm2 high tensile steels YF and YG were performed. The results are as follows ;(1) The cooling of weld thermal cycles in the case of bithermal and trithermal of CTS cracking test, are generally slower than those in the case of bead on a large plate and T-butt weld joint, respectively.(2) In the case of deposition on a CTS specimen of the steels KT and YC with ilmenite Type electrodes, cracks tend to occur in the heat-affected zone, when the cooling times are shorter than about Cf' critical cooling time.(3) In the case that low hydrogen type electrodes are used, the cracking tendency is still small, even if the cooling times are shorter than about Cf'.(4) In the case of the special CTS tests in which the CTS specimens were quenched in water during natural cooling after welding, the cracking tendency was large, when the specimen was quenched in water from the temperature at the neighbourhood of fusion line at the center of bead-length, being higher than about 350°C.(5) The cracking tendency in the heat-affected zone may be predicted to some degree by the continuous cooling transformation diagram of the steel used, and the Cf' critical cooling time and the temperature-range of martensite transformation are especially concering to the cracking heat-affected zone.

The transient and steady‐state domain‐wall velocities are measured by a refined collapse method in a bubble garnet film. The usual average velocity as a function of pulse width shows very large velocity for short pulse width and relaxation to the steady state. The instantaneous velocity defined simply from the increments of wall displacement distance and pulse width shows that the velocity is nearly steady over about 10 ns. The steady‐state velocity below the drive field of 500 Oe includes both a velocity component independent of drive field and a component increasing linearly with field. The former mode is not operative above 900 Oe. These are discussed from the theoretical predictions, together with the wall velocity in hard bubbles.

The domain wall stabilization caused by anisotropy induced during annealing has been studied in amorphous ribbons. It was found from domain observation that the regions where there existed domain walls during annealing tend to become nuclei of reverse domains as well as pinning sites of domain walls. The increased wall coercive force in Fe-Co based alloys shows parabolic dependence as a function of Fe-concentration. The anisotropy induced within the domain walls during high temperature annealing is expected to be a source of high coercive force. It is also shown that the ribbon with the domain wall induced anisotropy has potential application as a Wiegand type pulse generator.

Discrimination of S=1 and 0 bubbles using dynamic bubble collapse and a state‐stability test under quasistatic translation were tried for a YY‐pattern racetrack on a 3‐μm bubble film with a YIG capping layer. The bias‐field margin for collapse discrimination was 5 Oe. These two states were stable for 140–160 Oe of bias field and for 25–50 Oe of rotating in‐plane field.

Effects of compressive stress perpendicular to the surface of 4 percent silicon-iron single crystals on their magnetic properties were investigated. Picture frame single crystal specimens which were used had [100] and [111] orientation, respectively. The hysteresis loops at low field (0 r /B m curves of the 4 percent Si-Fe [100] and [111] specimens were plotted to show the change of the induction under applied stress.

The microstructure of 44.7 Cu–20.6 Mn–34.7 Al (at.%) alloy, which exhibits a remarkable constricted hysteresis loop in the as‐cast state, has been investigated by transmission electron microscopy. It has been found that the constricted hysteresis loop is caused by the nonuniform precipitation of nonmagnetic Cu9Al4 particles in the ferromagnetic Cu2MnAl matrix.

The bubble state stability in 3 μm bubble YY-pattern chips of simple round racetrack and 78 kbit conventional major-minor loop was studied at 200 Hz and 100-300 kHz drive frequencies by using the collapse discrimination method. For low frequency drive, the S=1H+, 1H

Two stress-magnetization effects, which appear in non-oriented 3% silicon steel sheets, have been investigated, paying attention to the demagnetizing and magnetizing conditions. The two stress effects are proportional, partly due to the tension. The negative sign of the stress effects can be explained in terms of the demagnetizing field and domain structures.

The atomization technique, which is widely used for producing metallic powders in a large quantity, has been applied to the preparation of amorphous powder of Fe‐Si‐B alloys fairly successfully. The as‐quenched powder consists of noncrystalline and crystalline portions. The fractional volume of the noncrystalline portion increases with decreasing particle size and exceeds 80% for 20‐μ particles. The crystallization temperature of this powder is almost the same as that of the amorphous ribbon with similar composition.

Mischmetal-Cobalt sintered magnets(MMCo x ) without sintering additive were prepared under various conditions, and the optimum condition to obtain high coercive forces was examined. In powder compacts which were prepared after milling for 16 hr(16 hr-milled samples), maximum intrinsic coercive force of 3.5 kOe was obtained for samples with the nominal compositional ratio of x=4.6. In sintered magnets, higher coercive forces were obtained for MM-richer compositions than those of powder compacts. The maximum value was 9 kOe for 16 hr-milled samples with x=3.6 which were sintered at 1000°C. Optimum particle size to obtain high coercive forces was about 3μm for 16 hr-milled samples with x= 3.2\sim5.0 It was found from X-ray diffraction patterns that high coercive forces are due to the co-existence of a small amount of the MM 5 Co 19 phase with the main phase of MMCo 5 .
