The synthesis and properties are reported of a rare example of a Mn(12) single-molecule magnet (SMM) in truly axial symmetry (tetragonal, I4). [Mn(12)O(12)(O(2)CCH(2)Bu(t))(16)(MeOH)(4)]·MeOH (3·MeOH) was synthesized by carboxylate substitution on [Mn(12)O(12)(O(2)CMe)(16)(H(2)O)(4)]·2MeCO(2)H·4H(2)O (1). The complex was found to possess an S = 10 ground state, as is typical for the Mn(12) family, and displayed both frequency-dependent out-of-phase AC susceptibility signals and hysteresis loops in single-crystal magnetization vs DC field sweeps. The loops also exhibited quantum tunneling of magnetization steps at periodic field values. Single-crystal, high-frequency electron paramagnetic resonance spectra on 3·MeOH using frequencies up to 360 GHz revealed perceptibly sharper signals than for 1. Moreover, careful studies as a function of the magnetic field orientation did not reveal any satellite peaks, as observed for 1, suggesting that the crystals of 3 are homogeneous and do not contain multiple Mn(12) environments. In the single-crystal (55)Mn NMR spectrum in zero applied field, three well-resolved peaks were observed, which yielded hyperfine and quadrupole splitting at three distinct sites. However, observation of a slight asymmetry in the Mn(4+) peak was detectable, suggesting a possible decrease in the local symmetry of the Mn(4+) site. Spin-lattice (T(1)) relaxation studies were performed on single crystals of 3·MeOH down to 400 mK in an effort to approach the quantum tunneling regime, and fitting of the data using multiple functions was employed. The present work and other recent studies continue to emphasize that the new generation of truly high-symmetry Mn(12) complexes are better models for thorough investigation of the physical properties of SMMs than their predecessors such as 1.

Assisted colonization-the deliberate translocation of species from unsuitable to suitable regions-is a controversial management tool that aims to prevent the extinction of populations that are unable to migrate in response to climate change or to survive in situ. The identification of suitable translocation sites is therefore a pressing issue. Correlative species distribution models, which are based on occurrence data, are of limited use for site selection for species with historically restricted distributions. In contrast, mechanistic species distribution models hold considerable promise in selecting translocation sites. Here we integrate ecoenergetic and hydrological models to assess the longer-term suitability of the current habitat of one of the world's rarest chelonians, the Critically Endangered Western Swamp Tortoise (Psuedemydura umbrina). Our coupled model allows us to understand the interaction between thermal and hydric constraints on the foraging window of tortoises, based on hydrological projections of its current habitat. The process can then be repeated across a range of future climates to identify regions that would fall within the tortoise's thermodynamic niche. The predictions indicate that climate change will result in reduced hydroperiods for the tortoises. However, under some climate change scenarios, habitat suitability may remain stable or even improve due to increases in the heat budget. We discuss how our predictions can be integrated with energy budget models that can capture the consequences of these biophysical constraints on growth, reproduction and body condition.

Magnetic nanoparticles have been developed in recent years with applications in unique and crucial areas such as biomedicine, data storage, environmental remediation, catalysis, and so forth. NaYF4 nanoparticles were synthesized and isolated with lanthanide dopant percentages, confirmed by ICP-OES measurements, of Er, Yb, Tb, Gd, and Dy that were in agreement with the targeted ratios. SEM images showed a distinct variation in particle size and shape with dopant type and percentage. HRTEM and XRD studies confirmed the particles to be crystalline, possessing both α and β phases. Magnetic measurements determined that all of the nanoparticles were paramagnetic and did not exhibit a blocking temperature from 2 to 300 K. The multifunctional properties of these nanoparticles make them suitable for many applications, such as multimodal imaging probes, up-conversion fluorescent markers, as well as MRI contrast agents.

A mononuclear as well as dinuclear Dy(III) complexes of general formula [Dy(hmb)(NO(3))(2)(DMF)(2)] (1) and [Dy(2)(hmt)(NO(3))(4)(DMF)(4)]·DMF (2), where Hhmb: (N'-(2-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzylidene)benzohydrazide and H(2)hmt: (N(1),N(4))-N'(1),N'(4)-bis(2-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzylidene)terephthalohydrazide were obtained using a synthetic strategy involving a polytopic Schiff base ligand. Single-crystal X-ray analysis reveals the Dy(III) ion is in a distorted pentagonal interpenetrating tetrahedral arrangement. The two symmetrical Dy(III) ions in complex 2 exhibit the same geometry and are well-isolated in the molecule by an hmt(2-) ligand. The direct current (dc) and alternating current (ac) magnetic measurements of the compounds were investigated. Complex 1 did not exhibit any ac signal whereas a frequency dependant signal was observed for 2 under zero dc field. When an optimum dc field was applied, clear frequency dependant signals were obtained for both complexes indicative of Single-Ion Magnet behaviour with relaxation barriers of U(eff) = 34 and 42 K for 1 and 2, respectively.

Reduction of the dinuclear Co(II) nindigo complex dmp(2)Nin[Co(N{SiMe(3)}(2))](2), with 1 or 2 equiv. of K(0) (or KC(8)), affords the reduced complexes [dmp(2)Nin{Co(N{SiMe(3)}(2))}(2)](-) and [dmp(2)Nin{Co(N{SiMe(3)}(2))}(2)](2-), respectively. Inspection of these reduced species reveals ligand-centered reduction, with each cobalt ion retaining a formal 2+ oxidation state.

An unusual dinuclear Yb(2) complex isolated using a mixed ligand strategy leads to field-induced SMM behaviour. Low magnetic axiality and a large tunnelling gap lead to significant quantum tunnelling of the magnetisation, which was reduced under an applied static optimum field of 1600 Oe.

A tetralithio salt (1) derived by treating 1,4-bis(trimethylsilyl)-cyclooctatriene with (n)BuLi serves as the first structural evidence for a multi-alkali metallocene. Single-crystal XRD confirms two Li(+) each asymmetrically bind to η(3) and η(4) between two COT'' rings and two Li(+) terminally bind to η(3). Solid-state NMR studies confirm the presence of two distinct lithium ion sites while the solution NMR studies suggest the formation of an (COT'' dianion) ion-pair in solution. Further treating of the tetralithio salt with NaCl leads to linear sodium polymeric chains. Therefore, simply changing the ionic radius changes the molecular structure.

The ditopic carbohydrazone ligand (L1) produces the square, self-assembled [2×2] grids [Dy(4)(L1)(4)(OH)(4)]Cl(2) (1) and [Ln(4)(L1)(4)(μ(4)-O)(μ(2)-1,1-N(3))(4)] (Ln = Dy (2), Tb (3)), with 2 exhibiting SMM behaviour. Ammonia-borane (NH(3)BH(3), AB) has garnered interest as a hydrogen storage material due to its high weight percent hydrogen content and ease of H(2) release relative to metal hydrides. As a consequence of dehydrogenation, B-N-containing oligomeric/polymeric materials are formed. The ability to control this process and dictate the identity of the generated polymer opens up the possibility of the targeted synthesis of new materials. While precious metals have been used in this regard, the ability to construct such materials using earth-abundant metals such as Fe presents a more economical approach. Four Fe complexes containing amido and phosphine supporting ligands were synthesized, and their reactivity with AB was examined. Three-coordinate Fe(PCy(3))[N(SiMe(3))(2)](2) (1) and four-coordinate Fe(DEPE)[N(SiMe(3))(2)](2) (2) yield a mixture of (NH(2)BH(2))(n) and (NHBH)(n) products with up to 1.7 equiv of H(2) released per AB but cannot be recycled (DEPE = 1,2-bis(diethylphosphino)ethane). In contrast, Fe supported by a bidentate P-N ligand (4) can be used in a second cycle to afford a similar product mixture. Intriguingly, the symmetric analogue of 4 (Fe(N-N)(P-P), 3), only generates (NH(2)BH(2))(n) and does so in minutes at room temperature. This marked difference in reactivity may be the result of the chemistry of Fe(II) vs Fe(0).

A high-spin tridecanuclear Ni(II) cluster, [Ni(II)(13)(N(3))(18)(dpo)(4)(Hdpo)(2)(H(2)hpo)(4)(H(2)O)(MeOH)] [Ni(II)(13)(N(3))(18)(dpo)(4)(Hdpo)(2)(H(2)hpo)(4)(H(2)O)(2)] (1) (Hdpo = 1-(dimethylamino)propan-2-one oxime and H(2)hpo = 1-(hydroxyamino)propan-2-one oxime) with a purely azido-bridged core, is reported with dominant ferromagnetic coupling between Ni(II) ions. The latter molecule exhibits a unique planar core topology with the largest N(3)(-):Ni(II) ratio reported to date.

Tritopic pyridinebis(hydrazone)-based ligands typically produce square M(9) [3 × 3] grid complexes with first-row transition-metal ions (e.g., M = Mn, Fe, Co, Cu, Zn), but with larger lanthanide ions, such coordination motifs are not produced, and instead linear trinuclear complexes appear to be a preferred option. The reaction of 2pomp [derived from pyridine-2,6-bis(hydrazone) and 2-acetylpyridine] with La(III), Gd(III), and Dy(III) salts produces helical linear trinuclear [Ln(3)(2pomp)(2)]-based complexes, where each metal ion occupies one of the three tridentate ligand pockets. Two ligands encompass the three metal ions, and internal connections between metal ions occur through μ-O(hydrazone) bridges. Coligands include benzoate, nitrate, and N,N-dimethylformamide. The linear Dy(III)(3) complex exhibits single-molecule magnet behavior, demonstrated through alternating-current susceptibility measurements. Slow thermal magnetic relaxation was detected in an external field of 1800 Oe, where quantum-tunneling effects were suppressed (U(eff) = 14 K).

A dysprosium(III) sandwich complex, [Dy(III)(COT″)(2)Li(THF)(DME)], was synthesized using 1,4-bis(trimethylsilyl)cyclooctatetraenyl dianion (COT″). The complex behaves as a single-ion magnet and demonstrates unusual multiple relaxation modes. A Dy(2) single-molecule magnet was isolated using a mixed ligand strategy in which the Dy(III) ions adopt distinct coordination environments. This leads to two unique relaxation modes due to a single-ion type relaxation mechanism. Energy barriers were obtained from individually fitting the overlapping peaks.

Two mononuclear high-spin Fe(II) complexes with trigonal planar ([Fe(II)(N(TMS)(2))(2)(PCy(3))] (1) and distorted tetrahedral ([Fe(II)(N(TMS)(2))(2)(depe)] (2) geometries are reported (TMS = SiMe(3), Cy = cyclohexyl, depe = 1,2-bis(diethylphosphino)ethane). The magnetic properties of 1 and 2 reveal the profound effect of out-of-state spin-orbit coupling (SOC) on slow magnetic relaxation. Complex 1 exhibits slow relaxation of the magnetization under an applied optimal dc field of 600 Oe due to the presence of low-lying electronic excited states that mix with the ground electronic state. This mixing re-introduces orbital angular momentum into the electronic ground state via SOC, and 1 thus behaves as a field-induced single-molecule magnet. In complex 2, the lowest-energy excited states have higher energy due to the ligand field of the distorted tetrahedral geometry. This higher energy gap minimizes out-of-state SOC mixing and zero-field splitting, thus precluding slow relaxation of the magnetization for 2.

Bis(imino)pyridine pincer ligands in conjunction with two isothiocyanate ligands have been used to prepare two mononuclear Co(II) complexes. Both complexes have a distorted square-pyramidal geometry with the Co(II) centers lying above the basal plane. This leads to significant spin-orbit coupling for the d(7) Co(II) ions and consequently to slow relaxation of the magnetization that is characteristic of Single-Molecule Magnet (SMM) behavior.

The syntheses, structures, and magnetic properties are reported for four new lanthanide clusters [Sm(4)(μ(3)-OH)(2)L(2)(acac)(6)]·4H(2)O (1), [Gd(4)(μ(3)-OH)(2)L(2)(acac)(6)]·4CH(3)CN (2), and [Ln(4)(μ(3)-OH)(2)L(2)(acac)(6)]·2H(2)L·2CH(3)CN (3, Ln = Tb; 4, Ln = Dy) supported by salen-type (H(2)L = N,N'-bis(salicylidene)-1,2-cyclohexanediamine) and β-diketonate (acac = acetylacetonate) ligands. The four clusters were confirmed to be essentially isomorphous by infrared spectroscopy and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Their crystal structures reveal that the salen-type ligand provides a suitable tetradentate coordination pocket (N(2)O(2)) to encapsulate lanthanide(III) ions. Moreover, the planar Ln(4) core is bridged by two μ(3)-hydroxide, four phenoxide, and two ketonate oxygen atoms. Magnetic properties of all four compounds have been investigated using dc and ac susceptibility measurements. The reaction of nitrosobenzene with copper(I) complexes of a tetradentate ligand led to two novel species that are best described as copper(II) complexes of an O-bonded nitrosobenzyl radical anion, in either the singlet or the triplet spin-state. Both states were characterized by crystal structures, magnetic measurements and DFT calculations.

The magnetic dilution method was employed in order to elucidate the origin of the slow relaxation of the magnetization in a Dy(2) single-molecule magnet (SMM). The doping effect was studied using SQUID and micro-SQUID measurements on a Dy(2) SMM diluted in a diamagnetic Y(2) matrix. The quantum tunneling of the magnetization that can occur was suppressed by applying optimum dc fields. The dominant single-ion relaxation was found to be entangled with the neighboring Dy(III) ion relaxation within the molecule, greatly influencing the quantum tunneling of the magnetization in this complex., (© 2011 American Chemical Society)

Btzn (1), an amine-functionalized bi(1,3,5-triazine) 4,4'-(NH(2))(2)-6,6'-(NHC(6)H(5))(2)-2,2'-(1,3,5-C(3)N(3))(2), is reported, and its coordination with Co, Ni and Cu is explored. Reactions of metal salts (2 equiv) with Btzn (1 equiv) result in dimeric species [(Btzn)Co(2)(NCS)(4)(EtOH)(2)(DMF)(2)], (2), [(Btzn)Ni(2)(η(1)-ONO(2))(2)(MeOH)(4)(DMF)(2)]·2[NO(3)], (3), [(Btzn)Cu(2)Cl(4)(DMF)(2)], (4), and [(Btzn)Cu(2)(η(2)-O(2)NO)(2)(OH(2))(2)(DMF)(2)]·2[NO(3)], (5). These complexes are the first examples of the coordination of transition metals with bi(1,3,5-triazine) ligands. Their structures display a bridging bis-bidentate coordination mode for Btzn. Variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility of the complexes reveals antiferromagnetic exchange between the spin carriers, with calculated exchange coupling values (J) of -4.7 cm(-1) for 3, -18.2 cm(-1) for 4, and -5.5 cm(-1) for 5. An in-depth evaluation of the metal geometry highlights the inefficient overlap of the magnetic d-orbitals through the bridging ligand, most likely leading to reduced delocalization and coupling.

Reaction of the divalent [(t-Bu)NP(Ph)(2)N(t-Bu)]CrCl(2)Li(THF)(2) (1) with 1 equiv of vinyl Grignard (CH(2)=CH)MgCl reproducibly afforded the triangulo {π-[(t-Bu)N-P(Ph)(2)-N(t-Bu)]Cr}(2)(μ,μ',η(4),η(4)'-C(4)H(4)){σ-[(t-Bu)N-P(Ph)(2)-N(t-Bu)]Cr} (2) containing a σ-/π-bonded butadiene-diyl unit. The diene-diyl moiety was generated by an oxidative coupling and deprotonation of two vinyl anions. The crystal structure revealed that of the three chromium atoms, each bearing one NPN ligand, two are perpendicularly bonded to the two sides of the π-system of the butadiene-diyl residue in a sort of inverted sandwich type of structure. The third is instead coplanar with the doubly deprotonated C(4) unit and σ-bonded to the two terminal carbon atoms. Despite the appearance as a Cr(II)/Cr(I) mixed valence species, DFT calculations have revealed that the structure of 2 consists of three divalent chromium atoms, while the additional electron resides on the π-system of the bridging organic residue. Complex 2 behaves as a single component selective catalyst for ethylene trimerization.

A family of five dinuclear lanthanide complexes has been synthesized with general formula [Ln(III)(2)(valdien)(2)(NO(3))(2)] where (H(2)valdien = N1,N3-bis(3-methoxysalicylidene)diethylenetriamine) and Ln(III) = Eu(III)1, Gd(III)2, Tb(III)3, Dy(III)4, and Ho(III)5. The magnetic investigations reveal that 4 exhibits single-molecule magnet (SMM) behavior with an anisotropic barrier U(eff) = 76 K. The step-like features in the hysteresis loops observed for 4 reveal an antiferromagnetic exchange coupling between the two dysprosium ions. Ab initio calculations confirm the weak antiferromagnetic interaction with an exchange constant J(Dy-Dy) = -0.21 cm(-1). The observed steps in the hysteresis loops correspond to a weakly coupled system similar to exchange-biased SMMs. The Dy(2) complex is an ideal candidate for the elucidation of slow relaxation of the magnetization mechanism seen in lanthanide systems., (© 2011 American Chemical Society)

The syntheses, structures and magnetic properties are reported for three new manganese complexes containing the Schiff-base ((2-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl)methylene)isonicotinohydrazine (H(2)hmi) ligand. Complex [Mn(II)(H(2)hmi)(2)(MeOH)(2)Cl(2)] (1) was obtained from the reaction of H(2)hmi with MnCl(2) in a MeOH-MeCN mixture. Addition of triethylamine to the previous reaction mixture followed by diethyl ether diffusion yielded a dinuclear manganese [Mn(III)(2)(hmi)(2)(OMe)(2)](infinity).2MeCN.2OEt(2) (2) compound. Upon increasing the MnCl(2)/H(2)hmi ratio, the mixed valence complex [Mn(III)(2)Mn(II)(hmi)(2)(OMe)(2)Cl(2)](infinity).MeOH (3) was obtained. Dc and ac magnetic measurements were carried out on all three samples. The ac susceptibility and field dependence of the magnetisation measurements confirmed that complex 3 exhibits a single-molecule magnet behaviour with an effective energy barrier of 8.1 K and an Arrhenius pre-exponential factor of 3 x 10(-9) s.

Five dinuclear lanthanide complexes [Ln(III)(2)(hpd)(6)].solvent, Ln(III) = Eu(III) (1.2MeCN), Gd(III) (2.2MeCN), Tb(III) (3.MeCN.MeOH), Dy(III) (4.2MeCN), Ho(III) (5.2MeCN) and Hhpd (2-Hydroxyisophthaldehyde) were synthesised and structurally and magnetically characterised. X-Ray structural analysis shows all complexes are isostructural and crystallise in the triclinic P1 space group. The dinuclear complexes are composed of eight-coordinate lanthanide ions linked by two phenoxide bridges from two hpd(-) ligands. Complex 1 exhibits characteristic fluorescence in the visible region.

The timing and magnitude of rainfall events are known to be dominant controls on pesticide migration into streams and groundwater, by triggering rapid flow processes, such as preferential flow and surface runoff. A better understanding of how regional differences in rainfall impact rapid leaching risk is required in order to match the scale at which water regulation occurs. We estimated the potential amount of rapid leaching, and the frequencies of these events in a case study of the southwest of Western Australia, for one soil type and a range of linearly sorbing, first order degrading chemicals. At the regional scale, those chemicals with moderate sorption and long half lives were the most susceptible to rapid transport within a year of application. Within the region, this susceptibility varied depending upon application time and seasonality in storm patterns. Those chemicals and areas with a high potential for rapid transport on average, also experience the greatest inter-annual variability in rapid leaching, as measured by the coefficient of variation. The timing and frequencies of rapid leaching events appeared to strongly relate to an area's relative susceptibility to rapid leaching. In the study region the results also suggested that frontal rainfall dominates rapid leaching along the western and southern coasts while convective thunderstorms play a greater role in the arid east., (2009 Elsevier B.V. The synthesis and structure of a novel complex with the formula [NaCo(III)(2)(dmo)(2)(mu-N(3))(3)(N(3))(2)](infinity), , are reported. Complex was synthesized from the reaction of 1-(dimethylamino)propan-2-one oxime (Hdmo), CoCl(2).6H(2)O, and NaN(3) in MeOH. It crystallizes in the monoclinic space group C2/c. The molecular structure consists of one Na(I) and two Co(III) ions bridged by two oxime ligands, two end-to-end azide and three end-on azide anions. The units are linked, forming a 1-D chain. This complex was characterized by UV-Vis spectroscopy where the data confirm the presence of low-spin Co(III) ions. Solid-state (23)Na NMR experiments indicate the presence of one magnetically unique site in the repeating unit, that sample purity in the bulk powdered form is high, and that it possesses microcrystalline order. Solid-state (59)Co NMR experiments at ultra-high field (B(0) = 21.1 T) are in agreement with the structure obtained through X-ray crystallography where the Co(III) ions are coordinated to five nitrogen atoms as well as an oxygen atom.

The syntheses, structures, and magnetic properties are reported for three new lanthanide complexes, [Ln(III)(4)(mu(3)-OH)(2)(mu(3)-O)(2)(cpt)(6)(MeOH)(6)(H(2)O)](2) (Ln = Dy (1.15MeOH), Ho (2.14MeOH), and Tb (3.18MeOH)), based on 4-(4-carboxyphenyl)-1,2,4-triazole ligand (Hcpt). The three complexes were confirmed to be isomorphous by infrared spectroscopy and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The crystal structure of 1 reveals that the eight-coordinate metal centers are organized in two cubane-shaped moieties composed of four Dy(III) ions each. All metal centers in the cubane core are bridged by two mu(3)-oxide and two mu(3)-hydroxide asymmetrical units. Moreover, each cubane is linked to its neighbor by two externally coordinating ligands, forming the dumbbell {Dy(III)(4)}(2) moiety. Electrostatic interactions between the ligands of the triazole-bridged dimers form an extended supramolecular two-dimensional arrangement analogous to a metal-organic framework with quadrilateral spaces occupied by ligands from axial sheets and by four solvent molecules. The magnetic properties of the three compounds have been investigated using dc and ac susceptibility measurements. For 1, the static and dynamic data corroborate the fact that the {Dy(III)(4)} cubane-shaped core exhibits slow relaxation of its magnetization below 5 K associated with a single-molecule magnet behavior.

A family of four isostructural complexes with a V-shaped pentanuclear [Zn(2)Ln(3)] core of general formula [Zn(2)Ln(3)(m-salen)(3)(N(3))(5)(OH)(2)] [Ln(III) = Tb(III) (1), Eu(III) (2), Ho(III) (3), Dy(III) (4); m-salen = N,N'-ethylenebis(3-methoxysalicylideneamine)] were isolated and structurally characterized. The fluorescence and magnetic measurements of the four compounds were investigated. Complex 1 exhibits strong fluorescence properties, while single-molecule-magnet behavior is seen in complex 4.

Prions are composed solely of an alternatively folded isoform of the prion protein (PrP), designated PrP(Sc). N-terminally truncated PrP(Sc), denoted PrP 27-30, retains infectivity and polymerizes into rods with the ultrastructural and tinctorial properties of amyloid. We report here that some polyoxometalates (POMs) favor polymerization of PrP 27-30 into prion rods, whereas other POMs promote assembly of the protein into 2D crystals. Antibodies reacting with epitopes in denatured PrP 27-30 also bound to 2D crystals treated with 3 M urea. These same antibodies did not bind to either native PrP(Sc) or untreated 2D crystals. By using small, spherical POMs with Keggin-type structures, the central heteroatom was found to determine whether prion rods or 2D crystals were preferentially formed. An example of a Keggin-type POM with a phosphorous heteroatom is the phosphotungstate anion (PTA). Both PTA and a Keggin-type POM with a silicon heteratom have low-charge densities and favor formation of prion rods. In contrast, POMs with boron or hydrogen heteroatoms exhibiting higher negative charges encouraged 2D crystal formation. The 2D crystals of PrP 27-30 produced by selective precipitation with POMs were larger and more well ordered than those obtained by sucrose gradient centrifugation. Our findings argue that the negative charge of Keggin-type POMs determines the quaternary structure adopted by PrP 27-30. The mechanism by which POMs function in competing prion polymerization pathways--one favoring 2D crystals and the other, amyloid fibrils--remains to be established.

A unique Dy(III)(6) complex is created by linking of two Dy(III)(3) triangles, in which intramolecular ferromagnetic interactions and single-molecule magnetic behaviour have been observed.

The synthesis and structural, spectroscopic, and magnetic characterization of a Mn25 coordination cluster with a large ground-state spin of S = 51/2 are reported. Reaction of MnCl2 with pyridine-2,6-dimethanol (pdmH2) and NaN3 in MeCN/MeOH gives the mixed valence cluster [Mn25O18(OH)2(N3)12(pdm)6(pdmH)6]Cl2 (1; 6Mn(II), 18Mn(III), Mn(IV)), which has a barrel-like cage structure. Variable temperature direct current (dc) magnetic susceptibility data were collected in the 1.8-300 K temperature range in a 0.1 T field. Variable-temperature and -field magnetization (M) data were collected in the 1.8-4.0 K and 0.1-7 T ranges and fit by matrix diagonalization assuming only the ground state is occupied at these temperatures. The fit parameters were S = 51/2, D = -0.020(2) cm(-1), and g = 1.87(3), where D is the axial zero-field splitting parameter. Alternating current (ac) susceptibility measurements in the 1.8-8.0 K range and a 3.5 G ac field oscillating at frequencies in the 50-1500 Hz range revealed a frequency-dependent out-of-phase (chi(M)'') signal below 3 K, suggesting 1 to be a single-molecule magnet (SMM). This was confirmed by magnetization vs dc field sweeps, which exhibited hysteresis loops but with no clear steps characteristic of resonant quantum tunneling of magnetization (QTM). However, magnetization decay data below 1 K were collected and used to construct an Arrhenius plot, and the fit of the thermally activated region above approximately 0.5 K gave U(eff)/k = 12 K, where U(eff) is the effective relaxation barrier. The g value and the magnitude and sign of the D value were independently confirmed by detailed high-frequency electron paramagnetic resonance (HFEPR) spectroscopy on polycrystalline samples. The combined studies confirm both the high ground-state spin S = 51/2 of complex 1 and that it is a SMM that, in addition, exhibits QTM.

An exclusively chelating ligand bridged high-valent [MnIV3] complex has been synthesized, in which all Mn(IV) ions are ferromagnetically-coupled to exhibit an S(T) = 9/2 spin ground state.

Common empirical models of stomatal conductivity often incorporate a sensitivity of stomata to the rate of leaf photosynthesis. Such a sensitivity has been predicted on theoretical terms by Cowan and Farquhar, who postulated that stomata should adjust dynamically to maximize photosynthesis for a given water loss. In this study, we implemented the Cowan and Farquhar hypothesis of optimal stomatal conductivity into a canopy gas exchange model, and predicted the diurnal and daily variability of transpiration for a savanna site in the wet-dry tropics of northern Australia. The predicted transpiration dynamics were then compared with observations at the site using the eddy covariance technique. The observations were also used to evaluate two alternative approaches: constant conductivity and a tuned empirical model. The model based on the optimal water-use hypothesis performed better than the one based on constant stomatal conductivity, and at least as well as the tuned empirical model. This suggests that the optimal water-use hypothesis is useful for modelling canopy gas exchange, and that it can reduce the need for model parameterization.

Reaction of the dinuclear complex [Mn2O2(bpy)4](ClO4)3 with H3cht (cis,cis-l,3,5-cyclohexanetriol) in MeCN produces the complex [Mn3(Hcht)2(bpy)4](ClO4)3.Et2O.2MeCN (1.Et2O.2MeCN). Dc magnetic susceptibility measurements reveal the existence of weak ferromagnetic exchange between the three Mn ions, leading to a spin ground state of S = 7, with D = -0.23 cm(-1). W-Band (94 GHz) EPR measurements on restrained powdered crystalline samples confirm the S = 7 ground state and determine the ground state zero-field splitting (ZFS) parameters of D = -0.14 cm(-1) and B4(0)= +1.5 x 10(-5) cm(-1). The apparent 4th order behaviour is due to a breakdown of the strong exchange limit approximation (J approximately d, the single-ion ZFS). Single crystal dc relaxation decay and hysteresis loop measurements reveal the molecule to have an appreciable energy barrier to magnetization relaxation, displaying low temperature sweep rate and temperature-dependent hysteresis loops. Density functional studies confirm the ferromagnetic exchange coupling between the Mn ions.

Photosynthesis provides plants with their main building material, carbohydrates, and with the energy necessary to thrive and prosper in their environment. We expect, therefore, that natural vegetation would evolve optimally to maximize its net carbon profit (NCP), the difference between carbon acquired by photosynthesis and carbon spent on maintenance of the organs involved in its uptake. We modelled N(CP) for an optimal vegetation for a site in the wet-dry tropics of north Australia based on this hypothesis and on an ecophysiological gas exchange and photosynthesis model, and compared the modelled CO2 fluxes and canopy properties with observations from the site. The comparison gives insights into theoretical and real controls on gas exchange and canopy structure, and supports the optimality approach for the modelling of gas exchange of natural vegetation. The main advantage of the optimality approach we adopt is that no assumptions about the particular vegetation of a site are required, making it a very powerful tool for predicting vegetation response to long-term climate or land use change.

The syntheses, structures, and magnetic properties of the complexes [MnIV4MnIII10MnII2O2(OCH3)12(tmp)8(O2CCH3)10].3Et2O (1.3Et2O), [MnIV2MnIII18MnII2O6(OCH3)14(O2CCH3)16(tmp)8(HIm)2].2CH3OH (2.2CH3OH), and [MnIV2MnIII18MnII2O6(OCH3)14(O2CCH3)16(Br-mp)8(HIm)2].2C6H14.5CH3OH (3.2C6H14.5CH3OH) are reported. The unusual wheel-like complexes were prepared by the treatment of [Mn3O(O2CCH3)6(HIm)3](O2CCH3) (HIm = imidazole) with 1,1,1-tris-(hydroxymethyl)propane (H3tmp) (1 and 2) or 2-(bromomethyl)-2-(hydroxymethyl)-1,3-propanediol (Br-mpH3) (3) in the presence of sodium methoxide (NaOCH3, 2, and 3) in CH3OH. Complex 1.3Et2O crystallizes in the triclinic space group P, while complexes 2.2CH3OH and 3.2C6H14.5CH3OH crystallize in the orthorhombic space group Pbca. Direct current magnetic susceptibility data, collected for 1-3 in the respective 1.8-300 K and 0.1-7 T temperature and magnetic-field ranges, afford spin ground-state values of S = 14 +/- 1 for complex 1 and S = 9 +/- 1 for complexes 2 and 3. Alternating current susceptibility measurements performed on all three complexes in the 1.8-10 K temperature range in a 3.5 G oscillating field at frequencies between 50 and 1000 Hz reveal out-of-phase chi"M signals below approximately 3 K. Single-crystal hysteresis loop and relaxation measurements confirm single-molecule magnetism behavior.

Dodecanuclear Mn clusters based on edge-sharing bioctahedra display the scan-rate- and temperature-dependent hysteresis loops that are indicative of single-molecule magnetism behaviour.

The reaction between MnBr(2).4H(2)O with H(3)tmp (1,1,1-tris(hydroxymethyl)propane) in MeCN in the presence of Na(O(2)CCMe(3)) and NBu(4)Br produces the complex [Mn(8)(O(2)CCMe(3))(2)(tmp)(2)(Htmp)(4)Br(4)(H(2)O)(2)].2MeCN (1.2MeCN) in good yield. The centrosymmetric octanuclear molecule consists of four Mn(III) and four Mn(II) ions assembled together by fourteen alkoxo bridges to give a [Mn(III)(4)Mn(II)(4)(mu(3)-OR)(6)(mu(2)-OR)(8)](6+) rod-like core in which the metal centres are arranged in a planar zigzag fashion. Peripheral ligation is provided by a combination of bridging pivalate ions, terminal bromides and water molecules. Dc magnetic susceptibility measurements reveal the presence of dominant antiferromagnetic interactions leading to a spin ground state of S = 0. A rationalization of this result is attempted by structural comparison with previously reported tetranuclear manganese complexes containing the [Mn(III)(2)Mn(II)(2)(mu(3)-OR)(2)(mu(2)-OR)(4)] core in which the magnetic interactions are ferromagnetic.

Ferromagnetic exchange between the three Mn ions in the complex [Mn3(Hcht)2(bpy)4](ClO4)3 leads to a spin ground state of S = 7; single crystal studies reveal the temperature and sweep rate dependent hysteresis loops expected for a single-molecule magnet.

The reaction of the mixed-valent metal triangles [Mn(3)O(O(2)CR)(6)(py)(3)] (R = CH(3), Ph, C(CH(3))(3)) with the tripodal ligands H(3)thme (1,1,1-tris(hydroxymethyl)ethane) and H(3)tmp (1,1,1-tris(hydroxymethyl)propane) in MeCN, produces a family of manganese rodlike complexes whose structures are all derived from a series of edge-sharing triangles. Variable temperature direct current (dc) magnetic susceptibility data were collected for all complexes in the 1.8-300 K temperature range in fields up to 7.0 T. Complex 1, [Mn(12)O(4)(OH)(2)(PhCOO)(12)(thme)(4)(py)(2)], has an S = 7 ground state with the parameters g = 1.98 and D = -0.13 K. Complex 2, [Mn(8)O(4)((CH(3))(3)CCO(2))(10)(thme)(2)(py)(2)] has a ground state of S = 6, with g = 1.81 and D = -0.36 K. Complex 3, [Mn(7)O(2)(PhCO(2))(9)(thme)(2)(py)(3)], has a spin ground states of S = 7 with the parameters g = 1.78 and D = -0.20 K. The best fit for complex 4, [Mn(6)((CH(3))(3)CCO(2))(8)(tmp)(2)(py)(2)], gave a spin ground state of S = 3 with the parameters g = 1.73 and D = -0.75 K, but was of poorer quality than that normally obtained. The presence of multiple Mn(2+) ions in the structure of 4 leads to the presence of low-lying excited states with energy levels very close to the ground state, and in the case of complex 5, [Mn(6)(CH(3)CO(2))(6)(thme)(2)(H(2)tea)(2)], no satisfactory fit of the data was obtained. DFT calculations on 4 and 5 indicate complexes with spin ground states of S = 4 and S = 0 respectively, despite their topological similarities. Single-crystal hysteresis loop and relaxation measurements show complex 1 to be a SMM.

Reaction of Cu(II) and the aminopolycarboxylate nitrilotripropionic acid (H(3)ntp) in water leads to the formation of [Cu(44)(mu(8)-Br)(2)(mu(3)-OH)(36)(mu-OH)(4)(ntp)(12)Br(8)(OH(2))(28)]Br(2).81H(2)O. The Cu(44) aggregates have a central inorganic core corresponding to [Cu(24)(mu(8)-Br)(2)(mu(3)-OH)(24)(mu-OH)(8)](14+) anchored on two bromide anions, and this is encased in a shell of Cu(II)/ligand units. The aggregates pack into a distorted tetragonal array with a very open structure containing large amounts of water of crystallization. The magnetic properties have been studied and, while complicated by the presence of low-lying excited states, indicate that the individual clusters have nonzero spin ground states.

The syntheses, structures and magnetic properties of three new MnIII clusters, [Mn26O17(OH)8(OMe)4F10(bta)22(MeOH)14(H2O)2] (1), [Mn(0O6(OH)2(bta)8(py)8F8] (2) and [NHEt3]2[Mn3O(bta)6F3] (3), are reported (bta=anion of benzotriazole), thereby demonstrating the utility of MnF3 as a new synthon in Mn cluster chemistry. The "melt" reaction (100 degrees C) between MnF(3) and benzotriazole (btaH, C6H5N3) under an inert atmosphere, followed by dissolution in MeOH produces the cluster [Mn26O17(OH)8(OMe)4F10(bta)22(MeOH)14(H2O)2] (1) after two weeks. Complex 1 crystallizes in the triclinic space group P1, and consists of a complicated array of metal tetrahedra linked by mu3-O2- ions, mu3- and mu2-OH- ions, mu2-MeO- ions and mu2-bta- ligands. The "simpler" reaction between MnF3 and btaH in boiling MeOH (50 degrees C) also produces complex 1. If this reaction is repeated in the presence of pyridine, the decametallic complex [Mn10O6(OH)2(bta)8(py)8F8] (2) is produced. Complex 2 crystallizes in the triclinic space group P1 and consists of a "supertetrahedral" [Mn(III)10] core bridged by six mu3-O2- ions, two mu3-OH- ions, four mu2-F- ions and eight mu2-bta- ions. The replacement of pyridine by triethylamine in the same reaction scheme produces the trimetallic species [NHEt3]2[Mn3O(bta)6F3] (3). Complex 3 crystallises in the monoclinic space group P2(1)/c and has a structure analogous to that of the basic metal carboxylates of general formula [M3O(RCO2)6L3]0/+, which consists of an oxo-centred metal triangle with mu2-bta- ligands bridging each edge of the triangle and the fluoride ions acting as the terminal ligands. DC magnetic susceptibility measurements in the 300-1.8 K and 0.1-7 T ranges were investigated for all three complexes. For each, the value of chi(M)T decreases with decreasing temperatures; this indicates the presence of dominant antiferromagnetic exchange interactions in 1-3. For complex 1, the low-temperature value of chi(M)T is 10 cm(3) K mol(-1) and fitting of the magnetisation data gives S=4, g=2.0 and D=-0.90 cm(-1). For complex 2, the value of chi(M)T falls to a value of approximately 5.0 cm(3) K mol(-1) at 1.8 K, which is consistent with a small spin ground state. For the triangular complex 3, the best fit to the experimental chi(M)T versus T data was obtained for the following parameters: Ja = -5.01 cm(-1), Jb = +9.16 cm(-1) and g=2.00, resulting in an S=2 spin ground state. DFT calculations on 3, however, suggest an S=1 or S=0 ground state with J(a)=-2.95 cm(-1) and J(b)=-2.12 cm(-1). AC susceptibility measurements performed on 1 in the 1.8-4.00 K range show the presence of out-of-phase AC susceptibility signals, but no peaks. Low-temperature single-crystal studies performed on 1 on an array of micro-SQUIDS show the time- and temperature-dependent hysteresis loops indicative of single-molecule magnetism behaviour.

A magnetically coupled Cu(II)36 aggregate forms around a potassium chloride unit.

The synthesis and magnetic properties of the compound [Mn(22)O(6)(OMe)(14)(O(2)CMe)(16)(tmp)(8)(HIm)(2)] 1 are reported. Complex 1 was prepared by treatment of [Mn(3)O(MeCO(2))(6)(HIm)(3)](MeCO(2)) (HIm = imidazole) with 1,1,1-tris(hydroxymethyl)propane (H(3)tmp) in MeOH. Complex 1.2MeOH crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group Pbca. The molecule consists of a metallic core of 2 Mn(IV), 18 Mn(III), and 2 Mn(II) ions linked by a combination of 6 micro(3)-bridging O(2)(-) ions, 14 micro(3)- and micro(2)-bridging MeO(-) ions, 16 micro-MeCO(2)(-) ligands, and 8 tmp(3)(-) ligands, which use their alkoxide arms to bridge in a variety of ways. The metal-oxygen core is best described as a wheel made from [Mn(3)O(4)] partial cubes and [Mn(3)O] triangles. Variable-temperature direct current (dc) magnetic susceptibility data were collected for complex 1 in the 1.8-300 K temperature range in a 1 T applied field. The chi(M)T value steadily decreases from 56 cm(3) K mol(-)(1) at 300 K to 48.3 cm(3) K mol(-)(1) at 30 K and then increases slightly to reach a maximum value of 48.6 cm(3) K mol(-)(1) at 15 K before dropping rapidly to 40.3 cm(3) K mol(-)(1) at 5 K. The ground-state spin of complex 1 was established by magnetization measurements in the 0.1-2.0 T and 1.80-4.00 K ranges. Fitting of the data by a matrix-diagonalization method to a model that assumes only the ground state is populated and incorporating only axial zero-field splitting (DS(z)()(2)), gave a best fit of S = 10, g = 1.96 and D = -0.10 cm(-)(1). The ac magnetization measurements performed on complex 1 in the 1.8-8 K range in a 3.5 G ac field oscillating at 50-1000 Hz showed frequency-dependent ac susceptibility signals below 3 K. Single-crystal hysteresis loop and relaxation measurements indicate loops whose coercivities are strongly temperature and time dependent, increasing with decreasing temperature and increasing field sweep rate, as expected for the superparamagnetic-like behavior of a single-molecule magnet, with a blocking temperature (T(B)) of approximately 1.3 K.

The reaction of MnCl2.4H2O (3 equiv), pyridine-2,6-dimethanol (pdmH2) (10 equiv), and NaN3 (10 equiv) in MeOH/MeCN (1:2 v/v) with NMe4OH (1 equiv) gave [Mn25O18(OH)2(N3)12(pdm)6(pdmH)6](Cl)2.12MeCN (1.12MeCN) in approximately 30% yield. The cation of complex 1 comprises five Mnx layers of three types in an ABCBA arrangement. Fitting of variable-temperature and -field magnetization data establishes that 1 has an S = 51/2 ground state, the largest value for a molecular species. The complex also displays hysteresis loops below 0.6 K in magnetization vs applied field sweeps, establishing it as the largest spin single-molecule magnet to date.
