151. Measurement of the Γγ/Γtot of the Ex=2.646 MeV state in 20Na

Abstract

In energetic nova events, breakout of the hot CNO cycle may proceed via the reaction chain 15O(α,γ)19Ne(p,γ)20Na. This triggers a sequence of rapid proton captures and beta decays which can process CNO nuclei to heavier elements (rp‐process). The rate of the 19Ne(p,γ)20Na reaction is sensitive to resonances in the 19Ne+p system. The first excited state above the proton threshold of 2.199 MeV in 20Na (at Ex=2.646 MeV) is expected to be the most important in determining the reaction rate. The gamma width (Γγ) of this state is still unknown and the Jπ assignment of this state is currently the subject of debate (1). We have performed 20Ne(3He,tγ) experiments to determine the branching ratio Γγ/Γ of the Ex=2.646 MeV excited state in 20Na. Some preliminary results of these experiments will be presented.

Abstract

A 60 μCi radioactive 22 Na target has been produced to study the reaction 22 Na(p, γ) 23 Mg. The diffusion of NaCl-target material into various backings has been studied via the 23 Na(p, γ) 24 Mg reaction. The stability, homogeneity and impurities of the target were studied. The results of these studies are discussed.

Abstract

The reaction 22Na(p,γ)23Mg has been investigated in the energy range Ep=0.4–1.27 MeV using a radioactive 22Na target. Upper limits for the γ yield have been determined for transitions to states in 23Mg up to Ex=4.4 MeV. The upper limits for the expected resonances in this energy range are more than an order of magnitude weaker than previously predicted. These upper limits are compared with shell model calculations.

Abstract

A series of experiments has been performed to determine whether nuclear fusion processes occur in palladium rods that have been electrochemically charged with deuterium. With a variety of metallurgical pretreatment procedures and different electrolytes, no evidence has been obtained for any excess enthalpy, neutron, gamma ray, tritium or helium production during electrolysis of D_20 with palladium cathodes.

Abstract

Currently several institutes worldwide are working on the development of a new generation of ultracold neutron (UCN) sources. In parallel with source development, new materials for guiding and storage of UCN are developed. Currently the best results have been achieved using (58)Ni, Be, solid O2 and low temperature Fomblin oil (LTF). All of these materials have their shortcomings like cost, toxicity or difficulty of use. A novel very promising material is diamond like carbon (DLC). Several techniques exist to coat surfaces, and industrial applications (e.g., for extremely hard surfaces) are already wide spread. Preliminary investigations using neutron reflectometry at PSI and Los Alamos yielded a critical velocity for DLC of about 7 m/s thus comparable to Beryllium. A low upper limit of depolarization probability for stored polarized UCN has been measured at the PF2 facility of the Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL) by North Carolina State University (NCSU), Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), and Petersburg Nuclear Physics Institute (PNPI), thus making it also a good material for storage and guidance of polarized UCN. Still missing is the loss probability per bounce. We will be able to extract this number and a more stringent value for the depolarization from our experiment thus proving the suitability of DLC as a wall material for a wide range of UCN applications.

Abstract

Hyper-Kamiokande consists of two identical water-Cherenkov detectors of total 520~kt with the first one in Japan at 295~km from the J-PARC neutrino beam with 2.5$^{\textrm{o}}$ Off-Axis Angles (OAAs), and the second one possibly in Korea in a later stage. Having the second detector in Korea would benefit almost all areas of neutrino oscillation physics mainly due to longer baselines. There are several candidate sites in Korea with baselines of 1,000$\sim$1,300~km and OAAs of 1$^{\textrm{o}}$$\sim$3$^{\textrm{o}}$. We conducted sensitivity studies on neutrino oscillation physics for a second detector, either in Japan (JD $\times$ 2) or Korea (JD + KD) and compared the results with a single detector in Japan. Leptonic CP violation sensitivity is improved especially when the CP is non-maximally violated. The larger matter effect at Korean candidate sites significantly enhances sensitivities to non-standard interactions of neutrinos and mass ordering determination. Current studies indicate the best sensitivity is obtained at Mt. Bisul (1,088~km baseline, $1.3^\circ$ OAA). Thanks to a larger (1,000~m) overburden than the first detector site, clear improvements to sensitivities for solar and supernova relic neutrino searches are expected., Comment: 102 pages, 49 figures. Abstract

We present a review of the motivation and results of recent experiments which utilize ultracold neutrons for measurements of neutron beta decay. Because these experiments hinge critically on the available ultracold neutron source technology, we also review the status of ultracold neutron source development, emphasizing the Los Alamos ultracold neutron facility and the ongoing beta decay research program sited there.
