Abstract

Several studies are conducted to explain the synthesis, as well as the thermal properties of the disordered Nd-doped SrGd[Ga.sub.3][O.sub.7] laser crystal grown by the Czochralski method. The crystal is shown to demonstrate a glasslike behavior, as an increase in the temperature is shown to lead to a significant enhancement in its thermal conductivity.

A Czochralski method was used to fabricate and characterize Nd-doped calcium barium niobate (Nd:CBN-28) single crystal. The results obtained helped to calculate the thermal conductivity of the crystal and estimated the phonon mean free path along the a- and c-axes of Nd:CBN-28 crystal.

Abstract

Cubic potassium tantalite niobate [K[Ta.sub.1-x][Nb.sub.x][O.sub.3] (KTN)] crystals of large size, good quality and varying Nb concentration are grown by the Czochralski method and their thermal properties are studied. The results have shown that crystalline KTN is a very good material for optical applications.

Abstract

The synthesis, characterization, and the thermal properties of the mixed Nd:[Lu.sub.x][Gd.sub.1-x]V[O.sub.4] laser crystals are discussed. The observed mixed crystals are found to act as excellent laser materials and hence can be used in the Q-switched laser operation.

Abstract

The golden snub-nosed monkey (Rhinopithecus roxellana) is an endangered species endemic to China. Relatively little is known about the taxonomic status of soil-transmitted helminths (STH) in these monkeys. Trichuris spp. (syn. Trichocephalus) are among the most important STHs, causing significant socio-economic losses and public health concerns. To date, five Trichuris species have been reported in golden monkeys, including a novel species, T. rhinopiptheroxella, based on morphology. In the present study, molecular and morphological analysis was conducted on adult Trichuris worms obtained from a dead golden snub-nosed monkey, to better understand their taxonomic status. Morphology indicated that the adult Trichuris worms were similar to T. rhinopiptheroxella. To further ascertain their phylogenetic position, the complete mitochondrial (mt) genome of these worms was sequenced and characterized. The mt genome of T. rhinopiptheroxella is 14,186 bp, encoding 37 genes. Phylogenetic analysis based on the concatenated amino acids of 12 protein-coding genes (with the exception of atp 8) indicated that T. rhinopiptheroxella was genetically distinct and exhibited 27.5–27.8% genetic distance between T. rhinopiptheroxella and other Trichuris spp. Our results support T. rhinopiptheroxella as a valid Trichuris species and suggest that mt DNA could serve as a marker for future studies on the classification, evolution and molecular epidemiology of Trichuris spp. from golden snub-nosed monkeys. Abstract

The nanoparticulate reinforced metal matrix composites (nPRMMCs) can further improve the ductility and fracture toughness of conventional microscale PRMMCs. The uniform dispersion of nanosized hard particles in the matrix is vital due to their strong tendency to agglomerate. This paper summarizes the state-of-the-art fabrication process of nPRMMCs by laser cladding via both ex-situ route and in-situ route. Concerns have been focused on the uniform dispersion of nanoparticles and their interface bonding with the matrix. The current challenges and future developments are discussed. This summarization will be helpful for the further research on the fabrication and applications of nPRMMCs.

195. Removal of unburned carbon from fly ash using a cyclonic-static microbubble flotation column

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the flotation behaviour of unburned carbon in a cyclonic-static microbubble flotation column (FCSMC). The ash sample, collected from a power station in Guangdong province of China, was characterized by size analysis, X-ray diffraction, contact angle measurements, and X-ray fluorescence. The effect of the column flotation operating variables on the removal of unburned carbon from the fly ash was systematically studied. The feasibility of separating unburned carbon and ash was determined from the removal rate of unburned carbon (RUC) and loss on ignition (LOI). Within the range studied, the optimum diesel oil dosage was 1200 g/t, abies oil dosage was 600 g/t, pulp density was 20 per cent, superficial gas velocity was 1.4 cm/s, and circulating pressure was 0.20 MPa. The results indicate that the FCSMC technique is effective in removing the unburned carbon from the fly ash, which can be attributed to the generation of microbubbles and the continuous cyclonic circulation method. Under the optimized conditions, a cleaning ash with 2.13 per cent LOI and 94.21 per cent RUC was obtained.

Abstract

Herbicide dose optimisation, i.e. maximising weed control and crop yield with herbicide dose, is an important part of integrated weed management strategies. However, the adoption of optimised dose technology and variable rate application has been limited because of the relatively long period between herbicide treatment and the time when efficacy can be visually assessed. Herbicide dose optimisation could therefore benefit from simple methods that allow early prediction of plant mortality. Early prediction would allow better management decisions, e.g. timely retreatment in case of uncontrolled weeds. The focus of this study was the relationship between leaf photosynthesis soon after herbicide treatment and subsequent plant mortality, with the aim of determining whether the former could predict the latter. Data from 28 glasshouse experiments were analysed. In these experiments, herbicides from five modes of action groups were tested on five plant species. Leaf photosynthesis was measured with two mobile meters up to 1 week after herbicide treatment. Leaf photosynthesis was affected by plant species, leaf number, herbicide species, dose and time. Large changes in leaf photosynthesis were observed with photosynthesis-inhibiting herbicides, intermediate changes were noted with glyphosate, glufosinate-ammonium and sulcotrione, and no changes were detected with MCPA. Threshold values associated with plant mortality were then determined. These values can be used to assess the risk of uncontrolled weeds treated with variable herbicide doses.
