Abstract

To reasonably characterize the features of underwater wet welding, especially the bubble effect engendered from a high concentration of heat, a three-dimensional (3D) numerical model considering the interaction of bubble dynamics with the boundary layer was developed. A semiempirical method assessing the bubble growth process was incorporated into the model as boundary conditions to account for the heat loss mechanism. It was proven that consideration of the bubble configuration can improve prediction accuracy, and the predicted weld profile was in good agreement with the experimental results. To reveal the contribution of the bubble configuration while maintaining processing variables consistency, the influences of the equivalent contact radius of the bubble and its floating frequency on the temperature field evolution were evaluated. The results showed that low floating frequency and/ or a high equivalent contact radius tend to depress the heat losses to a water environment, prolong the t8/5 time, and enhance the weld width and joint penetration, which render the role of optimized bubble dynamics beneficial. Under otherwise identical conditions, the equivalent contact radius of the bubble plays a much better role than the bubble floating frequency in promoting weld pool dimensions. Based on the quantified data, suggestions concerning the matching strategy of bubble configuration and heat input for underwater wet welding may be provided. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

In this article, we investigate extensively the bipolar-switching properties of Al2O3- and HfO2- based resistive-switching memory cells operated at low current down to <1 μA. We show that the switching characteristics differ considerably from those typically reported for larger current range (>15 μA), which we relate as intrinsic to soft-breakdown (SBD) regime. We evidence a larger impact of the used switching-oxide in this current range, due to lower density of oxygen-vacancy (Vo) defects in the SBD regime. In this respect, deep resetting and large memory window may be achieved using the stoichiometric Al2O3 material due to efficient Vo annihilation, although no complete erasure of the conductive-filament (CF) is obtained. We finally emphasize that the conduction may be described by a quantum point-contact (QPC) model down to very low current level where only a few Vo defects compose the QPC constriction. The large switching variability inherent to this latter aspect is mitigated by CF shape tuning through adequate engineering of an Al2O3\HfO2 bilayer. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Background In COPD, functional status is improved by pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) but requires specific facilities. Tai Chi, which combines psychological treatment and physical exercise and requires no special equipment, is widely practiced in China and is becoming increasingly popular in the rest of the world. We hypothesized that Tai Chi is equivalent (ie, difference less than ±4 St. George’s Respiratory Questionnaire [SGRQ] points) to PR. Methods A total of 120 patients (mean FEV1, 1.11 ± 0.42 L; 43.6% predicted) bronchodilator-naive patients were studied. Two weeks after starting indacaterol 150 μg once daily, they randomly received either standard PR thrice weekly or group Tai Chi five times weekly, for 12 weeks. The primary end point was change in SGRQ prior to and following the exercise intervention; measurements were also made 12 weeks after the end of the intervention. Results The between-group difference for SGRQ at the end of the exercise interventions was –0.48 (95% CI PR vs Tai Chi, –3.6 to 2.6; P = .76), excluding a difference exceeding the minimal clinically important difference. Twelve weeks later, the between-group difference for SGRQ was 4.5 (95% CI, 1.9 to 7.0; P < .001), favoring Tai Chi. Similar trends were observed for 6-min walk distance; no change in FEV1 was observed. Conclusions Tai Chi is equivalent to PR for improving SGRQ in COPD. Twelve weeks after exercise cessation, a clinically significant difference in SGRQ emerged favoring Tai Chi. Tai Chi is an appropriate substitute for PR.

Abstract

The objects of this study were (1) to determine the effects of risedronate (Ris) and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) alone and in combination, on tibial diaphyses of older intact female rats; and (2) to observe the fate of any extra bone if formed after withdrawal of the treatment. Nine-month-old female Sprague-Dawley rats were treated with 6 mg of PGE2/kg/day, 1 or 5 micrograms of Ris/kg twice a week, or 6 mg of PGE2/kg/day plus 1 or 5 micrograms of Ris/kg twice a week for the first 60 days and followed by vehicle injections for another 60 days. Cross-sections of double fluorescent labeled, undecalcified tibial diaphyses proximal to the tibiofibular junction were processed for histomorphometry. We found that: (1) neither the 1 microgram nor the 5 micrograms of Ris treatment in the 60-day on/60-day off group showed any histomorphometric differences from age-related controls; (2) while the 60 days of PGE2 treatment added extra cortical bone (6%) on the tibial shaft (due to stimulation of periosteal, endocortical, and marrow trabecular bone formation), the new endocortical and most of the new marrow trabecular bone were lost when treatment was withdrawn; however, the new periosteal bone remained; (3) PGE2 with Ris added the same amount of new bone to tibial diaphysis as did PGE2 alone and upon withdrawal, new marrow trabecular bone was lost but new periosteal and endocortical bones were preserved in PGE2 + 1 microgram of Ris on/off group. In contrast, all the new bone was maintained in the PGE2 + 5 micrograms of Ris on/off group; (4) PGE2 + Ris cotreatment failed to block the increase in cortical bone porosity induced by PGE2; and (5) in the PGE2 alone and PGE2 + 1 microgram of Ris on/off groups bone turnover was higher than that in the PGE2 + 5 micrograms of Ris on/off group. These results indicate that on/off treatment with PGE2 and Ris is superior to PGE2 alone in that it forms the same amount of new bone during treatment, but preserves more cortical bone during withdrawal. Depression of bone resorption and turnover were the tissue mechanisms responsible for this protection.

Abstract

Background: Breast cancer patients with estrogen receptor (ER)���positive disease have a continuous long-term risk for fatal Breast cancer, but the biological factors influencing this risk are unknown. We aimed to determine whether high intratumor heterogeneity of ER predicts an increased long-term risk (25 years) of fatal Breast cancer. Methods: The STO-3 trial enrolled 1780 postmenopausal lymph node���negative Breast cancer patients randomly assigned to receive adjuvant tamoxifen vs not. The fraction of cancer cells for each ER intensity level was scored by Breast cancer pathologists, and intratumor heterogeneity of ER was calculated using Rao���s quadratic entropy and categorized into high and low heterogeneity using a predefined cutoff at the second tertile (67%). Long-term Breast cancer-specific survival analyses by in-tra-tumor heterogeneity of ER were performed using Kaplan-Meier and multivariable Cox proportional hazard modeling adjusting for patient and tumor characteristics. Results: A statistically significant difference in long-term survival by high vs low intratumor heterogeneity of ER was seen for all ER-positive patients (P < .001) and for patients with luminal A subtype tumors (P �� .01). In multivariable analyses, patients with high intratumor heterogeneity of ER had a twofold increased long-term risk as compared with patients with low intratumor heterogeneity (ER-positive: hazard ratio [HR] �� 1.98, 95% confidence interval [CI] �� 1.31 to 3.00; luminal A subtype tumors: HR �� 2.43, 95% CI �� 1.18 to 4.99). Conclusions: Patients with high intratumor heterogeneity of ER had an increased long-term risk of fatal Breast cancer. Interestingly, a similar long-term risk increase was seen in patients with luminal A subtype tumors. Our findings suggest that intratumor heterogeneity of ER is an independent long-term prognosticator with potential to change clinical management, especially for patients with luminal A tumors.

Abstract

Applying a cost-effective process with a simple one-side-heating furnace, two layers of YBa2Cu3Ox (YBCO) bulks were successfully grown in one batch by using NdBa2Cu3Ox (NdBCO) thin-film-seeds deposited on MgO substrates. Due to the large temperature difference between the two layers, the seed-induced growth began at the bottom layer much later than that at the top layer. Remarkably, NdBCO films on the bottom layer samples survived a long time (over 15 h) above the growth temperature and effectively induced the YBCO growth. The significant thermal stability of the films, i.e., the tolerance for a long holding time on the surface of the molten pellet, is supposed to relate to a competition between the dissolution/diffusion of film materials into the liquid and NdBCO grain coarsening/Nd-YBCO crystallization. Abstract

A set of realizable second order models for boundary-free turbulent flows is presented. The constraints on second order models based on the realizability principle are re-examined. The rapid terms in the pressure correlations for both the Reynolds stress and the passive scalar flux equations are constructed to exactly satisfy the joint realizability. All other model terms (return-to-isotropy, third moments, and terms in the dissipation equations) already satisfy realizability. To correct the spreading rate of the axisymmetric jet, an extra term is added to the dissipation equation which accounts for the effect of mean vortex stretching on dissipation. The test flows used in this study are the mixing shear layer, plane jet, axisymmetric jet, and plane wake. The numerical solutions show that the unified model equations predict all these flows reasonably. It is expected that these models would be suitable for more complex and critical flows.

Abstract

It is highly significant to reduce the amount of chemical fertilizer application in mango orchards and substituting it with organic manure. The field location method was applied to examine the effects of substituting chemical fertilizer with organic manure on soil physical and chemical properties, leaf nutrients, fruit yield and quality in a mango orchard, it can provide a foundation for reducing chemical fertilizer application in mango orchards. Results indicated that, compared to conventional fertilization, treatments substituting chemical fertilizer with organic manure at different concentrations can reduce the volume weight of different levels of orchard soil and improve soil porosity. The decrease of volume weight and the increase of total porosity in the 0-20cm soil layer were greater than those in the 20-40cm soil layer. Substituting chemical fertilizer with organic manure can improve soil pH and organic matter content in the different soil layers. Although alkali-hydrolysable nitrogen declined compared with conventional fertilization, it did not attain a significant difference. The concentrations of available phosphorus, potassium calcium and magnesium in soils increased compared with the control. All the treatments improved mango yield, however, there was a non-significant effect on single fruit weight. Soluble solid, vitamin C and solidity-acid ratio in fruits all increased, and the titratable acid content decreased compared with the control. Comprehensive comparison indicated that a 30% substitution of organic manure is the most effective treatment to improve soil fertility and fruit quality. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This paper presents the design of a collimator lens for use with the Lightbrick that uses total internal reflection as well as convex and concave surfaces. The Lightbrick is a light collector for the Natural Light Illumination System. The collimator lens is constructed using freeform surfaces which can be calculated through geometric-optics. Verified by optical simulation, using the collimator lens can achieve 90.3% luminous flux within ±2°, and optical efficiency improves by 48% in the collimator lens output. The collimator lens converges the light distribution of the Lightbrick and enhances the transmission efficiency of the Natural Light Illumination System. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
