Abstract

DEMON is a detector array for neutrons emitted in heavy ion induced reactions at low to intermediate energies. The neutron detection efficiency of some single DEMON modules has been measured in the energy range 8-21 MeV, with detection thresholds down to 0.1 MeV equivalent-electron (MeVee). The influence on the efficiency of cross talk, neutron-gamma and neutron-charged particle discrimination techniques was found to be negligibly small. Monte Carlo simulations have been performed and are compared with the experimental data. The relative weight of the interaction channel C-12(n,n'gamma) in the organic liquid scintillator was determined experimentally. Taking into account observed saturation effects in the detector output, a calibration method is proposed for high light outputs, based on the energy loss of cosmic ray muons.

212. Direct Bonding of Multiple Curved, Wedged and Structured Silicon Wafers as X-Ray Mirrors

Abstract

In this paper, we present the technological basis for the production of structured silicon X-ray mirrors using direct wafer bonding. We dice 12" silicon wafers into rectangular plates, which are then structured to have a thin membrane and several ribs. As a next step we wedge the plates on both sides. Using in-house developed stacking robots, we then elastically deform the plates into conical shapes and bond the plates into a stack, which finally consists of several tens of such plates in a stiff self-supporting structure. Throughout the production of the structured plates and their assembly into stacks, we focus on maintaining pristinely clean surfaces as this is a prerequisite for direct wafer bonding. Several metrology tools have been developed, operating in-line, to ensure precise plate to plate alignment, high cleanliness and an accurate figure. The process is adaptable to work with plates of various dimensions, with metal coatings and with different bend radii.

215. Inside-out method to develop volar arthroscopic portals of the wrist in cadaver specimens

Abstract

Three direct volar portals for wrist arthroscopy have been described previously: two radiocarpal and one midcarpal. The aim of this study was to systematically describe four volar arthroscopic portals through minimally invasive incisions using an inside-out approach from known dorsal portals. Four volar arthroscopic wrist portals were studied on six hand specimens using an inside-out technique: a radial radiocarpal approach (RRCA), an ulnar radiocarpal approach (URCA), a radial midcarpal approach (RMCA) and an ulnar midcarpal approach (UMCA). Each volar approach corresponded to a dorsal approach: the 3/4 portal for RRCA, 4/5 portal for URCA, dorsal radial midcarpal approach for RMCA, and dorsal ulnar midcarpal approach for UMCA. The average range of motion of the scope through the RRCA was 65° in radial deviation and 72° in ulnar deviation; through the URCA it was 62° in radial deviation and 64° in ulnar deviation; through the RMCA it was 62° in radial deviation and 60° in ulnar deviation, and through the UMCA it was 59° in radial deviation and 68° in radial deviation. No iatrogenic injuries to important anatomical structures were noted. Based on these results, it is possible to perform these four volar portals through an inside-out technique with incisions mirroring the dorsal portals. They were easy to perform, safe and should be useful in ligament or bony intracarpal repair indications.

Abstract

Abstract: Short-lived radionuclides (SLRs), with t 1/2 <∼5Ma, were extant in the Early Solar System (ESS). Their relatively short lifetimes and different chemical behavior make them useful for dating processes in the ESS. The existence of the SLR 36Cl (t 1/2 =3.01×105 a) has been determined from correlation between isotopic enrichment of its daughter isotope, 36S, and Cl abundance in meteorites. The relatively high inferred initial Solar System 36Cl/Cl ratio strongly suggests that 36Cl was produced in the ESS by bombardment of solar energetic particles on gas and dust in the protoplanetary disc. A major uncertainty in the irradiation models is the absence of experimental data. Experimental data on key 36Cl production reactions will help constrain the calculated yields. Of the reactions considered in the ESS models, the 33S(α,p)36Cl reaction is one of the most important. Here we report first results of a measurement of the averaged reaction cross section in the energy range 1.84–2.04MeV/A. Our result, 192±33mb (1σ), is significantly higher than results of previous calculations, 102 and 34mb. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract

Abstract: The first application of 39Ar Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS) at the ATLAS facility of Argonne National Laboratory was to date ocean water samples relevant to oceanographic studies using the gas-filled magnet technique to separate the 39K–39Ar isobars. In particular the use of a quartz liner in the plasma chamber of the electron cyclotron resonance ion source enabled a 39K reduction of a factor ∼130 compared to previous runs without liners, and allowed us to reach a detection sensitivity of 39Ar/Ar=4×10−17. In order to improve this sensitivity and allow the measurement of lower ratios, higher ion source currents and a lower overall 39K background are necessary. This paper summarizes our efforts to investigate new methods combining low level potassium cleaning techniques with the use of ultra-pure aluminum liners in the plasma chamber of the ion source. The aim of the study was to improve by 1–2 orders of magnitude the 39Ar detection sensitivity required in the selection of ultra-pure materials for detectors used in weakly interacting massive particle dark matter searches. 230. GETTING IT WRONG IN ASSYRIA: SOME BRACELETS FROM NIMRUD.

Abstract

The article examines the three pairs of bracelets from the second of four tombs in the harem section of the NorthWest Palace of King Ashurnasirpal II in Nimrud, Assyria. The tomb was discovered by Muzahem Mahmud Hussein during his excavation in 1989. The front of the bracelets features a design from a brown-and-white agate eyestone and each hinge of the jewelry consists of 18 cells arranged in six rows with semi-precious stones. One difference between the third bracelet and the others is a recessed and inlaid motif with gold background. The author concludes that the first two bracelets were not made by Assyrians.

Abstract

This paper is devoted to a specific LQ-type optimal control problem (OCP) in the presence of additional control constraints. We consider control processes governed by linear differential equations with a priori known control switchings. The piecewise constant structure of the admissible controls under consideration is motivated by variety of concrete engineering applications and moreover, can be interpreted as a result of a quantization procedure applied to the original dynamics. We propose an new implementable numeric algorithm that makes it possible to calculate a consistent approximating solution to the initial constrained LQ-type OCPs. The contribution discusses some theoretic aspects of the obtained computational scheme and also contains a numerical example.

Abstract

Due to the steady growth of decentralised distributed generation, the operational management of small, local electricity networks (microgrids) is becoming an increasing challenge to meet: How to provide an operational control for microgrids with a high share of renewable energy sources (RES) that is robust to perturbations? In this paper we address an optimal control problem (OCP) that maintains all of the stated properties in the presence of an uncertain load and RES infeed in islanded operation. Assuming that the uncertainty is within a bounded region along a given load and RES trajectory prediction, the problem is posed as a worst-case hybrid OCP, where the RES output can be curtailed. We propose a minimax (MM) model predictive control (MPC) scheme that adjusts according to the present uncertainty and can be formulated as a mixed-integer linear program (MILP) and solved numerically online.

We therefore analyzed renal cell carcinomas arising in renal allografts through a retrospective French renal transplant cohort. We performed a retrospective, multicentric survey by sending questionnaires to all French kidney transplantation centers. All graft tumors diagnosed after transplantation were considered as de novotumors. Thirty‐two centers participated in this study. Seventy‐nine tumors were identified among 41 806 recipients (Incidence 0.19%). Patients were 54 men and 25 women with a mean age of 47 years old at the time of diagnosis. Mean tumor size was 27.8 mm. Seventy‐four (93.6%), 53 (67%) and 44 tumors (55.6%) were organ confined (T1–2), low grade (G1–2) and papillary carcinomas, respectively. Four patients died of renal cell carcinomas (5%). The mean time lapse between transplantation and RCC diagnosis was 131.7 months. Thirty‐five patients underwent conservative surgery by partial nephrectomy (n = 35, 44.3%) or radiofrequency (n = 5; 6.3%). The estimated 5 years cancer specific survival rate was 94%. Most of these tumors were small and incidental. Most tumors were papillary carcinoma, low stage and low grade carcinomas. Conservative treatment has been preferred each time it was feasible in order to avoid a return to dialysis.

250. An algorithm for 3D simulation of branchwork karst networks using Horton parameters and ★ Application to a synthetic case

Abstract

This paper presents a method to stochastically simulate 3D karstic networks and more specifically branchwork pattern cave systems. Considering that they can be compared with 3D fluvial networks, the topological classification of Strahler and the corresponding ratios of Horton are used to define three morphometric parameters. These parameters are integrated in an algorithm that computes branches hierarchically to obtain a final network organized around the main observed inlet and outlet with a branching complexity controlled by the user. Each branch corresponds to a low-cost path between two points calculated with the ★ graph search algorithm. Speleogenetic information on inception horizons, palaeo-water tables and fractures is accounted for by adapted definitions of the searching functions of ★. The method is demonstrated on a 3D synthetic case with discrete fractures networks, inception horizons and a palaeo-water table. The simulated karsts have a realistic geometry and are geologically consistent.
