Zein, the prolamine fraction of maize, is localized in the endosperm in membrane-bound structures called protein bodies, which have polyribosomes on their surfaces. These polysomes or the mRNA fraction isolated from them will direct the synthesis of zein-like proteins in vitro. The in vitro products consist primarily of two molecular weight classes but show considerable charge heterogeneity when analyzed by isoelectric focusing. Although the molecular weight classes are very similar for different inbred lines, the isoelectric focusing patterns differ. Results given here suggest that the extensive charge heterogeneity of zein proteins does not result from the presence of a large number of totally distinct mRNAs. Zein proteins synthesized in vitro fall into several families related by sequence homologies in their mRNAs. In Illinois High Protein (IHP) the major zein mRNAs can be classified into three families based on their binding to cloned complimentary DNA copies of IHP zein mRNA. Each of three other lines we have studied (W22, Oh43, and W64A) has zein mRNAs that are related to those of IHP. Among these four lines the molecular weights of the members of a given family are generally similar, but the number of members in a family and their isoelectric points differ.

Summary Morphometric and relative growth analyses of Bathynectes superbus reveal simple allometric relationships between short carapace width, the reference measurement, and other carapace dimensions. There are apparently no puberty-related changes in growth of the carapace or chelipeds of B. superbus, but a change in growth rate of abdominal segment 6 width suggests a pubertal moult in females. Plots of abdominal segment 6 width on short carapace width of females reveal an inflection at approximately 30 mm short carapace width. This is the size at which sperm is first found in the seminal receptacle of females and increased pleopod setation occurs.

To improve accessibility and maintenance of art slides in the United States Military Academy Library at West Point, a model card with a graphic image of the slide was designed with pertinent identifying information displayed directly above a black‐and‐white opaque photo and also key‐punched into it. The card serves for ample comparison reference previous to handling the slides and can produce a subject‐arranged permuted index in book form. The latter permits access from the approach of form, geographic area, name, time of origin, artist, school, or style, etc. Some added advantages, common to other kinds of graphic collections, are detailed. Estimated costs of photo‐reproduction of original cards, various kinds of copies, and computer time and materials are listed. Future benefits from a consistent, unified cataloging system for graphic objects and the dissemination of this kind of information in a network structure are indicated as major goals.

The fasting plasma phenylalanine concentration of patients with untreated phenylketonuria was found to be highest in the first few months of life. Dietary studies indicated that this was largely due to the proportionately higher intake of phenylalanine at this age. The fasting plasma tyrosine level was found to be higher than normal in babies with phenylketonuria but the reasons for this were not clear. It is suggested that the rapid mental deterioration which occurs in the young baby with untreated phenylketonuria may be due to the degree of biochemical abnormality developed rather than to a special vulnerability of the growing brain.

A maize genome library was constructed using maize W22 DNA from leaf tissue nuclei and bacteriophage λCh4 as the vector. cDNA clones of zein mRNA were used to identify homologous genomic sequences in the Ch4 maize library. Each of the genomic clones identified has homology to a family of mRNAs in the zein mRNA population. This paper reports on the construction of the library, the isolation of the genomic clones and their partial characterization.

Unconventional agents and conventional viruses provide model systems to investigate the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease (AD). The essay which follows examines the hypothetical role of herpes simplex in AD and presents some generally applicable experimental approaches to detecting genes in brain tissues. The concluding section, on parallels between AD and diseases of the brain caused by unconventional viruses, defines strategies for isolating genes related to pathology.

Closed system respirometry was used to measure total and weight-specific oxygen consumption of female blue crabs, Callinectes sapidus, in their final premolt (D2-D4), molt (E) and postmolt (A1-B1) stages. 2. Total oxygen consumption increased with an increase in wet weight. Weight-specific oxygen consumption decreased as wet weight increased. 3. Premolt crabs had a greater oxygen consumption than molting or postmolt crabs. Weight-specific oxygen consumption was depressed in exuviating and early postmolt crabs (≤ 12 hr after withdrawal from exoskeleton). Crabs > 12 hr into the postmolt period showed an increased oxygen uptake.

SYNOPSIS 8 children with insidious onset of manifestations of stricture of the Aqueduct of Sylvius in later childhood are reported. These children present with raised intracranial pressure, without lateralising signs, thus mimicking tumours, and the radiological features are those of raised intracranial pressure. Stricture of the Aqueduct is one of the commoner causes of this “midline syndrome”, and compared with the other causes, its treatment is simple and the prognosis good.

Des specimens de Bathynectes superbus de l'est et de l'ouest de l'Atlantique ont ete examines en fonction de la presence ou de l'absence de pubescence. Deux types de pubescence ont ete observes parmi les populations allopatriques. Les crabes de l'Atlantique oriental etaient completement pubescents: chelipedes, pereiopodes, maxillipedes et surfaces ventrales de la carapace etaient couverts de soies, alors que celles-ci, sur les specimens ouest-atlantiques, etaient generalement confinees aux bords anterolateraux, sur le cote ventral de la carapace.

PONTIFÍCIA UNIVERSIDADE CATÓLICA DO RIO DE JANEIRO COORDENAÇÃO DE APERFEIÇOAMENTO DO PESSOAL DE ENSINO SUPERIOR PROGRAMA DE SUPORTE À PÓS-GRADUAÇÃO DE INSTITUIÇÕES COMUNITÁRIAS DE ENSINO PARTICULARES A presente pesquisa tem como objetivo principal contribuir com entendimentos sobre a prática da enfermagem durante o período reconhecido como o de pandemia da COVID-19 no município do Rio de Janeiro. Através da análise de narrativas emergentes na entrevista, objetivo elucubrar sobre as emoções que afloram no discurso (LE BRETON, 2009), as interações sócio discursivas nas quais identidades emergem e interagem entre si (MOITA LOPES, 2001; 2006) e evidências da ação de correntes hegemônicas (FAIRCLOUGH, 2001a; 2001b). A fim de subsidiar tal investigação, amparo-me no Sistema de Avaliatividade (MARTIN; ROSE, 2007) em diálogo com a Linguística Sistêmico-Funcional (HALLIDAY; MATHIESSEN, 2014) para augurar uma análise micro situada e na Linguística Aplicada Contemporânea (MOITA LOPES, 2006) e a Análise do Discurso Crítica (CHOULIARAKI; FAIRCLOUGH, 1999; VAN DJIK, 2005) para conjecturar uma análise macro. Assim, alinhando-me aos conceitos promulgados pela pesquisa qualitativa (DENZIN; LINCOLN, 2006), analiso as narrativas de sofrimento de enfermeiros e técnicos em enfermagem que vivenciaram a situação pandêmica desde o seu início, observando de que forma situam a si mesmos e os outros, se posicionam axiologicamente perante a sociedade e as correntes hegemônicas e os atravessamentos de suas experiências. Através das entrevistas, foram estruturados quatro blocos de análise sendo estes: O Início da Pandemia, Politica(gem), A Linha de Frente e O Pós (?) pandemia. Os resultados sugerem que estes profissionais suportaram uma fastidiosa carga emocional e física exigida no exercício da profissão no período em questão e evidenciam a interferência de interesses hegemônicos nas práticas discursivas e profissionais desses indivíduos. The main objective of this research is to contribute to understandings about nursing practice during the period recognized as the COVID-19 pandemic in the city of Rio de Janeiro. Through the analysis of emerging narratives in the nondirective interview, I aim to elucidate about what emotions emerge in discourse (LE BRETON, 2009), the socio-discursive interactions in which identities emerge and interact with each other (MOITA LOPES, 2001; 2006) and evidence of hegemonic currents in the action (FAIRCLOUGH, 2001a; 2001b). In order to support this investigation, I rely on the Evaluation System (MARTIN; ROSE, 2007) in dialogue with Systemic-Functional Linguistics (HALLIDAY; MATHIESSEN, 2014) to inaugurate a micro-situated analysis and on Contemporary Applied Linguistics (MOITA LOPES, 2006) and Critical Discourse Analysis (CHOULIARAKI; FAIRCLOUGH, 1999; VAN DJIK, 2005) to conjecture a macro analysis. Aligning myself with the concepts promulgated by qualitative research (DENZIN; LINCOLN, 2006), I analyze the suffering narratives of nurses and nursing technicians who have experienced the pandemic situation since its beginning. Thus, observing how they situate themselves and the others, position themselves axiologically before society and the hegemonic currents and the crossings of their experiences. Through the interviews, four blocks of analysis were structured: O Início da Pandemia, Politica(gem), A Linha de Frente and O Pós (?) Pandemia. Results suggest that these professionals bore a lumbering emotional and physical load required in the exercise of the profession at that time and evidence interference of hegemonic interests in the discursive and professional practices of these individuals.

PONTIFÍCIA UNIVERSIDADE CATÓLICA DO RIO DE JANEIRO COORDENAÇÃO DE APERFEIÇOAMENTO DO PESSOAL DE ENSINO SUPERIOR PROGRAMA DE SUPORTE À PÓS-GRADUAÇÃO DE INSTITUIÇÕES COMUNITÁRIAS DE ENSINO PARTICULARES Considerando os processos de normalização de performances de gênero e sexualidade no contexto familiar, o presente trabalho se debruça sobre as histórias de vida de pessoas que se identificam como LGBTQIA+ acerca de suas experiências com seus familiares. Inserido nas investigações atuais da Linguística Aplicada, a partir da Análise de Narrativa – a qual tem buscado compreender, dentre outras coisas, os processos de produção de vulnerabilidade e subalternidade em práticas sociais e discursivas – buscase compreender os processos de construção identitária, performances, bem como os respectivos discursos que lhes dão suporte. Em um viés metodológico de pesquisa qualitativa e interpretativa, foram gerados dados em situação de entrevista com homens e mulheres cujas performances correspondem ao espectro de sexualidades supracitado. Destas, optou-se por analisar as narrativas de três participantxs. Para isso, foram mobilizadas discussões e ferramental teórico-analítico próprio à Análise de Narrativa, às análises sobre estigma de Goffman (1963) e à Linguística Queer. A análise se dá a partir da divisão laminar em três partes. Na primeira lâmina, busca-se mostrar como identidades são indexadas em relações de sequencialidade na produção de causalidade e por avaliações de modo a produzir a família como uma instituição repressora. Na segunda, pautado no trabalho de face, busca-se mostrar como ocorre a negociação do estigma na interação. Por fim, busca-se mostrar quais sistemas de coerência atuam na construção dessas histórias. A partir disso foi possível compreender como performances identitárias não alinhadas a ideias cis-heteronormativas desencadeiam processos de controle, regulação e repressão. Taking into account the processes of normalization of experiences of gender and sexuality in the family context, the present work focuses on the life stories of people who identify themselves as LGBTQIA+ regarding their life experiences with their family. As part in the contemporary researches of Applied Linguistics – which has been intending to understand the processes of production of vulnerability and subalternity in discursive and social practices – the processes of identity construction (performance) in these narratives as well as the respective discourses that support it are investigated. In a qualitative and interpretative research methodological bias, data were generated through interview with men and women whose performances correspond to the above-mentioned spectrum of sexualities; for the analysis it was chosen the narratives of three participants. For this, it was mobilized discussions and tools proper to the Narrative Analysis, Intercultural Sociolinguistics and Queer Linguistics. The analysis follows the laminar division in three parts. In the first, it is intent to demonstrate how identities are indexed through sequential relations in the production of causality and through evaluations in order to produce the family as a repressive institution. In the second, based on the face work, we seek to show how a stigma negotiation occurs in the interaction. Finally, based on lexical choices and evaluative sequences, it is intent to show how the Discourse of Repression is indexed in the narratives. From this, it was possible to understand how identity performances not coherent with cis-heternormative values triggered process of control, regulation and repression.

PONTIFÍCIA UNIVERSIDADE CATÓLICA DO RIO DE JANEIRO CONSELHO NACIONAL DE DESENVOLVIMENTO CIENTÍFICO E TECNOLÓGICO FUNDAÇÃO DE APOIO À PESQUISA DO ESTADO DO RIO DE JANEIRO BOLSA NOTA 10 Nesta pesquisa, tenho por objetivo criar inteligibilidades acerca da prática do pole dance, a partir da investigação dos discursos narrativos produzidos por mulheres da comunidade desta dança-esporte. Situado na área da Linguística Aplicada Contemporânea (MOITA LOPES, 2006; FABRÍCIO 2006), o estudo dedica-se à interpretação dos sentidos criados em narrativas orais (LABOV, 1972; BASTOS, 2005) contadas por pole dancers, a fim de entender a emergência de estigmas (GOFFMAN, [1963] 2004) e a construção de identidades (MOITA LOPES, 2002, HALL, 2005) voltados às praticantes e à própria atividade. A arquitetura teórica fundamenta-se em uma visão socioconstrucionista de narrativas (BASTOS; BIAR, 2015) e de identidades (MOITA LOPES, 2001) para a análise da prática discursiva avaliativa (LINDE, 1997; THOMPSON; ALBA-JUEZ, 2014) que traz à tona estigmas e ressignificações sobre o pole dance. O estudo tem a sua metodologia alinhada ao paradigma qualitativo de pesquisa (DENZIN; LINCOLN, 2006), com o corpus gerado por meio de entrevistas realizadas com alunas e professoras do estúdio de pole dance do qual faço parte, na zona sul do Rio de Janeiro. A análise microdiscursiva é baseada no Sistema de Avaliatividade (MARTIN, 2001; MARTIN; WHITE, 2005), integrante da Linguística Sistêmico-Funcional (HALLIDAY, 1994; EGGINS, 2004), para a observação das instâncias léxicogramaticais avaliativas que contribuíram para construção discursiva de estigmas e de identidades nas narrativas compartilhadas. As análises sugerem que as participantes se (re)construíram identitariamente na relação com suas vivências no pole dance, refletindo sobre questões de preconceito e do fazer do pole dance em si. As pole dancers pareceram reconhecer e reprovar a estigmatização que as rotulam negativamente e que confere descrédito a elas e à atividade que praticam, gerando contradiscursos de resistência e de ressignificação do pole dance. Nesse sentido, em geral, as dançarinas-atletas construíram o pole dance positivamente enquanto prática transformadora que proporciona às suas praticantes autoconhecimento, libertação, superação, despertar de forças, empoderamento e muitos outros aprendizados. This research aims to create intelligibilities about the pole dancing pratice through the investigation of narrative discourses produced by women from this dance-sport community. Situated in the area of Contemporary Applied Linguistics (MOITA LOPES, 2006; FABRÍCIO 2006), the study is dedicated to the interpretation of meanings created in oral narratives (LABOV, 1972; BASTOS, 2005) told by pole dancers, in order to understand the emergence of stigmas (GOFFMAN, [1963] 2004) and the construction of identities (MOITA LOPES, 2002, HALL, 2005) related to the practitioners and the activity itself. The theoretical architecture is based on a socio-constructionist perspective of narratives (BASTOS; BIAR, 2015) and identities (MOITA LOPES, 2001) for the analysis of the evaluative discursive practice (LINDE, 1997; THOMPSON; ALBA-JUEZ, 2014) which brings up stigmas and resignifications of the pole dancing practice. The methodology is aligned with the qualitative research paradigm (DENZIN; LINCOLN, 2006) and the corpus was generated through interviews with learners and teachers from the pole dance studio where I practice pole dancing, located in the south zone of Rio de Janeiro. The microdiscursive analysis is based on the Appraisal System (MARTIN, 2001; MARTIN; WHITE, 2005), part of the Sistemic-Functional Linguistics theory (HALLIDAY, 1994; EGGINS, 2004), for the observation of evaluative lexicogrammatical instances which contributed to the discursive construction of stigmas and identities in the narratives shared. The analysis suggests that participants (re)constructed their identities in relation to their pole dancing experiences, reflecting upon prejudice issues and the pole dancing practice itself. The pole dancers seemed to recognize and disapprove the stigmatization that negatively labels them and discredits the activity they practice, generating counter-discourses of resistance and resignification of pole dancing. Thus, in general, the dancers-athletes constructed pole dancing positively as a transformative practice which provides them with self-awareness, liberation, resilience, awakening of strengths, empowerment and many other learnings.

PONTIFÍCIA UNIVERSIDADE CATÓLICA DO RIO DE JANEIRO CONSELHO NACIONAL DE DESENVOLVIMENTO CIENTÍFICO E TECNOLÓGICO A pesquisa intitulada Porque elas aparentam ser meninas ou agem como meninas: apagamento de identidades não-binárias em traduções do mangá Houseki no kuni analisa cinco traduções do referido mangá – duas traduções profissionais, uma para o inglês e uma para o francês; e três traduções amadoras, uma para o português, uma para o espanhol e uma para o inglês – e como essas lidaram com a não-binariedade dxs personagens. O objetivo foi examinar as maneiras nas quais ideologias hegemônicas de tradução e cis-heteronormativas podem levar ao apagamento de identidades LGBTQAI(mais). A análise dos dados demonstrou que todas as traduções para línguas neolatinas, assim como a tradução amadora para o inglês designaram um gênero axs personagens. No caso das línguas neolatinas, a análise dos meta e paratextos sugerem que o gênero gramatical dessas línguas desempenhou um papel importante no apagamento da não-binariedade de gênero. Contudo, também se verificou evidências da influência de ideologias cis-heteronormativas na escolha das estratégias tradutórias empregadas. Dentre as traduções analisadas, apenas a tradução profissional para o inglês não designou um gênero axs personagens. Contudo, a análise de fontes metatextuais revelou que ideologias de tradução relacionadas à ideia de fluência estavam por trás das estratégias tradutórias utilizadas, resultando em uma tradução que mantém a não-binariedade, porém, não a visibiliza. Ao estudar as ideologias cis-heteronormativas e de tradução que subjazem às estratégias tradutórias empregadas, a presente pesquisa contribui para entender como identidades LGBTQAI(mais) podem ser facilmente apagadas em traduções e propor formas de visibilizá-las a fim de combater a hegemonia cis-heteronormativa. The research entitled Because they look like girls or act like girls: erasure of non-binary identities in translations of the Houseki no kuni manga analyzes five translations of the referred manga - two professional translations, one into English and one into French ; and three amateur translations, one into Portuguese, one into Spanish and one into English - and how they dealt with the non-binary gender of the characters. The objective was to examine the ways in which cis-heteronormative ideologies and hegemonic translation ideologies can lead to the erasure of LGBTQAI (plus) identities. The analysis of the data showed that all the translations to Neo-Latin languages, as well as the amateur translation into English designated a gender to the characters. In the case of Neo-Latin languages, the analysis of meta and paratexts suggests that the grammatical gender of these languages played an important role in erasing the non-binary gender of the characters. However, there was also evidence of the influence of cis-heteronormative ideologies in the choice of translation strategies employed. Among the translations analyzed, only the professional translation into English did not designate a gender to the characters. However, the analysis of metatextual sources revealed that translation ideologies related to the idea of fluency were behind the translation strategies used, resulting in a translation that maintains the non-binary gender of the characters, but does not make it visible. By studying the cis-heteronormative and translation ideologies that underlie the translation strategies employed, this research contributes to understand how LGBTQAI (plus) identities can be easily erased in translations and propose ways to make them visible in order to fight cis-heteronormative hegemony.

Esta tendência suscita a questão de saber até que ponto sujeitos diversos encontram voz em meio a esses grupos e a alegada horizontalidade se concretiza. Visando lançar luz sobre esta questão, esta pesquisa qualitativa interpretativista debruça-se sobre as lutas urbanas contemporâneas, tomando as práticas discursivas de cicloativistas engajados em grupos de debate no Rio de Janeiro como seu objeto micro. A partir da compreensão de que suas reivindicações se encontram atravessadas pelas lutas de grupos minoritários na esfera pública, elege como norte analítico a noção de gênero enquanto performance. Embora diversas assimetrias possam manifestar-se nas interações, o enfoque aqui conferido decorre de observações proporcionadas pelo estudo de campo e pelo contato aproximado aos dados gravados. No intuito de ouvir vozes tradicionalmente marginalizadas, a pesquisa propõe uma escuta (auto)etnográfica, privilegiando narrativas contadas por protagonistas mulheres. A microanálise é dividida em duas lâminas: a primeira centrada na construção do mundo narrado e a segunda nas interações que se desenvolvem no mundo narrativo. Buscando compreender a articulação e a negociação dos significados emergentes, bem como os possíveis diálogos com as contingências macrossociais que posicionam os atores sociais de forma diferenciada nas interações, o estudo se baseia na concepção da prática narrativa enquanto modo de resistência, assim como terreno fértil para a negociação de performances identitárias e o acúmulo de poder simbólico. A partir dessa perspectiva, o percurso analítico busca mapear a navegação pelas dinâmicas de poder em jogo nas interações. As práticas discursivas identificadas indicam que as narradoras desestabilizam concepções essencialistas de gênero, contestando assimetrias convencionais e reivindicando a criação de relações mais simétricas ‒ tanto no nível micro, como na sociedade mais ampla em que buscam efetuar mudanças. Isso posto, a valorização de traços simbolicamente masculinos frisa a linha tênue trilhada pelas narradoras na busca por status, e na evitação de sanções sociais sutis, no contexto de uma cultura pós-feminista. O questionamento de suas performances, a partir da prática de conarração, sinaliza a emergência de disputas tácitas por aprovação, por reconhecimento e pela pauta, saldo do embate entre práticas de resistência e pressupostos generificados conflitantes. As interlocuções multifuncionais das quais seus pares lançam mão: práticas de higiene verbal, alternâncias de código e problematizações, representam eventuais obstáculos à participação significativa na construção de significados e na deliberação da agenda. Simultaneamente, a análise destaca a dinamicidade de valores socioculturais ‒ passíveis de renegociação a partir da prática intersubjetiva de segundas narrativas e a negociação de práticas identitárias atreladas a meios distintos de fazer política, entre as quais os participantes oscilam. Estes entendimentos indicam que a ação discursiva dos ativistas ora desafia noções binárias de gênero, se aproximando do ideal da horizontalidade, ora as reifica, tornando a criação de espaços discursivos mais igualitários objeto de contestação. Desse modo, a pesquisa salienta a urgência de um olhar mais crítico direcionado a interações localmente situadas a fim de fazer avançar uma compreensão mais nuançada da construção da horizontalidade. Assim, será possível identificar eventuais atropelamentos microdiscursivos, arena para resistência; bem como práticas discursivas, potencialmente, fomentadoras da participação ativa de vozes plurais, para que as próprias práticas transformacionais almejadas pelos movimentos sociais possam ser colocadas em ação. The notion of horizontal organization continues to hold resounding appeal for those in pursuit of fairer societies, disillusioned with archaic models of representation. To an extent, overriding enthusiasm for such a model has led to the concept becoming something of a rallying cry for contemporary activists. Yet further reflection on the role of their own discursive practices in its construction can be scarce on the ground. This qualitative interpretive case study therefore asks to what extent symmetrical relations may materialize discursively within an ostensibly horizontal group, by taking a critical look at the narrative and interactional practices of a group of bicycle advocates, guided by a view of gender as performance. This is based on the understanding that the group s claims over the use of public space are intertwined with the struggles of minority groups in civil society more generally. Though numerous social asymmetries may manifest themselves in such a group s discursive practices, the focus here lies on gendered asymmetries. This choice stems from observations gained during fieldwork, as well as those made possible by audio recordings of face to face debates held in Rio de Janeiro. With the aim of zooming in on these traditionally marginalized voices, data selection prioritized narratives told by women protagonists, as part of what is deemed an (auto)ethnographic listen. Microanalysis of these narratives is split into two layers: the first centered on the construction of the narrated world and the second on the interactions which unfold during the narrative world. In order to further comprehend this process, the analysis draws on constructs of narrative practice as a form of resistance, as well as identity as performance. Such practices are conceived of as fertile terrain for the negotiation of social roles and the accumulation of symbolic power. Such locally produced meaning is understood here as part of the geopolitics of gender on a macro scale, at once informed by and informing such structures. Based on this view, we seek to trace the navigation of power dynamics at play between those whose perceived social identities are understood to be organized hierarchically. The analysis indicates that essentialist notions of gender are destabilized by narrators who contest conventional social asymmetries and lay claim to the creation of more symmetrical relationships, both at the level of micro interaction as well as in wider society in which they seek to effect change. Having said that, the extolling of symbolically masculine traits highlights the fine line which must be negotiated in the quest for status while simultaneously avoiding tacit social sanctions in a postfeminist culture. The questioning of these performances, via conarration, suggests that discursive struggles arise over claims for approval and recognition, which may result from conflicting gendered assumptions brought to bear on the interactions. The deployment of multifunctional discursive phenomenon, such as practices of verbal hygiene, code switching and problematization appears to hinder more significant participation in the construction of meaning as well as agenda setting. At the same time, the analysis highlights the fluidity of sociocultural values, which may be subject to renegotiation via the intersubjective practice of second narratives and the (re)negotiation of identity claims bound up with distinct ways of doing politics, between which the participants oscillate. Such insights suggest the activists linguistic action at once reifies and challenges binary notions of gendered social roles, rendering the creation of fairer discursive spaces fraught with discursive contestation, albeit subtle. This study therefore highlights the need to critically examine locally situated interactions in order to obtain a more nuanced understanding of the construction of horizontality. As a result, it may be possible to identify discursive practices which potentially foster the active participation of less privileged groups. This might then enable the very transformative practice sought out by those engaged in social movements.

DE ENSINO PROGRAMA DE SUPORTE À PÓS-GRADUAÇÃO DE INSTITUIÇÕES COMUNITÁRIAS DE ENSINO PARTICULARES A presente dissertação investiga, por meio da Análise de Narrativa e do aporte teórico oferecido pela Sociolinguística Interacional, as narrativas vocacionais de futuros padres que ainda estão em processo formativo em instituições conhecidas como seminários. Os dados apresentados nesta pesquisa foram gerados em entrevistas qualitativas com seminaristas residentes no mesmo seminário que o pesquisador, que também é seminarista. A pesquisa reveste-se ainda de uma sensibilidade autoetnográfica, uma vez que o pesquisador é também parte integrante de um seminário católico e, portanto, membro ativo da mesma comunidade que serviu de campo de pesquisa. A análise, de natureza qualitativa e interpretativista, dá-se em perspectiva micro-interacional e a partir do arcabouço teórico da Análise de Narrativa (LABOV e WALETSKY, 1968; LABOV, 1972; BRUNER, 1997; LINDE, 1993; RIESSMAN, 2008, entre outros). Ainda, utilizamos a noção de Instituição Total (GOFFMAN, 1961; FOUCAULT, 2006) para entender questões acerca do contexto no qual essas narrativas são produzidas. Os resultados descrevem que essas narrativas estão fundamentadas em um sistema de coerência próprio, no qual se articulam os movimentos retóricos de orientação e avaliação, dentre os quais evidenciamos as avaliações de sucesso ou bem-sucedidas a respeito da escolha vocacional e a ideia de que o chamado divino é eterno e, portanto, inato. Também, é possível percebemos a complexa construção narrativa na qual a noção de agenciamento é por vezes atenuada pelo narrador em função da presença constante de dois agentes: eu e deus. Além disso, os dados informam que essas micronarrativas dialogam com grandes narrativas (BRUNER, 1997; SHOSHANA, 2013) entendidas por nós como canônicas e institucionalmente difundidas entre os seminaristas. The present dissertation investigates, through the Narrative Analysis and the theoretical contribution offered by Interational Sociolinguistics, the vocational narratives of future priests who are still in the formative process in institutions known as Seminary. The data presented in this research were generated in qualitative interviews with seminarians residing in the same Seminary as the researcher, who is also a seminarian. The research also has an auto-ethnographic sensitivity, since the researcher is also an integral part of a Catholic Seminary and, therefore, an active member of the same community that served as a research field. The analysis, of a qualitative and interpretative nature, takes place in a micro-interactional perspective and from the theoretical framework of Narrative Analysis (LABOV and WALETSKY, 1968; LABOV, 1972; BRUNER, 1997; LINDE, among others). Yet, we use the notion of Total Institution (GOFFMAN, 1961; FOUCAULT, 2006) to understand questions about the context in which these narratives are produced. The results describe that these narratives are based on a system of coherence of their own, in which rhetorical movements of orientation and evaluation are articulated, among which we highlight successful or successful evaluations of vocational choice and the idea of that the divine call is eternal and therefore innate. Also, it is possible to perceive the complex narrative construction in which the notion of agency is sometimes attenuated by the narrator due to the constant presence of two agents: I and God. In addition, the data indicate that these micronarratives dialogue with great narratives (BRUNER, 1997; SHOSHANA, 2013) understood by us as canonical and institutionally diffused among the seminarians.

DE ENSINO Esta pesquisa é resultado de um encontro misto (Goffman, 1988), proporcionado por entrevistas de pesquisa realizadas por mim com mulheres envolvidas no contexto prisional, especificamente na condição de parentes/visitantes de homens presos. O encontro se deu nas periferias de um presídio do Estado do Rio de Janeiro, em novembro de 2015, com o propósito aplicado de reverter a invisibilidade social dessas mulheres, em sua maioria negras, pobres, mães e moradoras de zonas periféricas do estado. Ao narrarem a causalidade da prisão de seus pares, narrativas de experiência vicária (Norrick, 2013) emergem na interação, com o propósito interacional de inocentá-los e construí-los favoravelmente. É objetivo do trabalho investigar, à luz do campo de Análise de Narrativa (Bastos e Biar, 2015), informado pela Sociolinguística Interacional (Gumperz, 1982; Goffman, 1974), como se constituem tais narrativas de inocentação produzidas pelas entrevistadas, e que tipos de sistemas de coerência emergem dessas histórias. A análise dos dados indica que as entrevistadas animam discursos que desvinculam a agência de seus pares dos respectivos crimes, construindo-os positivamente, e, ao fazerem isso, reivindicam para si mesmas selves favoráveis que funcionam como explicação para estarem ali. Além disso, predominantemente, as participantes costuram relações de causalidade para a prisão de seus pares a partir de frágeis relações silogísticas amparadas no senso comum. This research is the result of a mixed contact (Goffman, 1988), made possible through research interviews conducted by me with women involved in the prison context, with particular focus on relatives/visitors of incarcerated men. The encounters took place in the outskirts of a prison in the state of Rio de Janeiro in November 2015, with the applied purpose of reversing the social invisibility of these women, who were mostly black, poor, mothers and residents of peripheral areas of the state. Through building external causalities for the imprisonment, the women clear their peers and portray them favorably, in narratives of vicarious experience (Norrick, 2013), which emerge from the interactions. Rooted in the field of Narrative Analysis (Bastos and Biar, 2015) and informed by Interactional Sociolinguistics (Gumperz, 1982; Goffman, 1964), this work aims at investigating how these narratives of innocence are produced by the interviewees and what types of coherence systems emerge from the stories. The analysis of the data indicates that the women animate discourses which disassociate their peers from any agency in relation to their respective crimes, constructing them positively. In doing so, the women claim for themselves favorable selves that function as an explanation for being there as visitors. Furthermore, the participants predominantly set up causality relations to the imprisonment of their peers from fragile syllogistic relations supported by common sense.

International audience; This chapter uses John Gagnon and William Simon's sexual script theory in order to make sense of gay men's relation to barebacking fantasies. Bracketing moral panics, it proposes an interpretative sociology of how gay men who enjoy watching barebacking pornography account for the relation between their pornographic fantasies and their sexual realities. Barebacking pornography is a controversial entertainment that relies on an eroticized focus on condomless " raw " and " juicy " anal penetration. It emerged in the US in the late 1990s and mainstreamed over the decade of the 2000s in France, while HIV were remaining high among gay men. Based on the analysis of sixteen in-depth interviews, this chapter analyzes how the sexual subjectivities of HIV-positive and HIV-negative gay men have been differently fragmented by moral panics regarding the carnal appeal of barebacking fantasies.
