The article focuses on research on surgical procedures for the ophthalmic-maxillary nerve trunks in laboratory rats. It comments on a method of exposing the retroorbital and pterygopalatine fossae of rats for exposure of the major ophthalmic-maxillary nerve trunks using surgery. It mentions that associated peripheral and autonomic nerve branches are also exposed. It comments on anesthetic procedures, which includes utilizing a lidocaine solution mixed with epinephrine injected behind the eyeball to provide extra anesthesia, partially herniating the eyeball from its orbit, and helping in hemostasis. It talks about the surgical procedure to expose the nerve and mentions that the procedure results in few postoperative infections and can even be used on newborn rats.
