Background: To use Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) to characterize the severity, location, prevalence, and demographics of shoulder injuries in athletes at the Rio de Janeiro 2016 Summer Olympic Games., Methods: This was a retrospective analysis of all routine shoulder MRIs obtained from the Olympic Village Polyclinic during the Rio 2016 Summer Olympics. Imaging was performed on 1.5 T and 3 T MRI, and interpretation was centrally performed by a board-certified musculoskeletal radiologist. Images were assessed for tendon, muscle, bone, bursal, joint capsule, labral, and chondral abnormality., Results: A total of 11,274 athletes participated in the Games, of which 55 (5%) were referred for a routine shoulder MRI. Fifty-three (96%) had at least two abnormal findings. Seven (13%) had evidence of an acute or chronic anterior shoulder dislocation. Forty-nine (89%) had a rotator cuff partial tear and / or tendinosis. Subacromial / subdeltoid bursitis was present in 29 (40%). Thirty (55%) had a tear of the superior labrum anterior posterior (SLAP)., Conclusion: Our study demonstrated a high prevalence of both acute and chronic shoulder injuries in the Olympic athletes receiving shoulder MRI. The high rates of bursal, rotator cuff, and labral pathology found in these patients implies that some degree of glenohumeral instability and impingement is occurring, likely due to fatigue and overuse of the dynamic stabilizers. Future studies are needed to better evaluate sport-specific trends of injury.

Objectives: Reinforcements for the pulmonary autograft (PA) in the Ross operation have been introduced to avoid the drawback of conduit expansion and failure. With the aid of an in silico simulation, the biomechanical boundaries applied to a healthy PA during the operation were studied to tailor the best implant technique to prevent reoperation., Methods: Follow-up echocardiograms of 66 Ross procedures were reviewed. Changes in the dimensions and geometry of reinforced and non-reinforced PAs were evaluated. Miniroot and subcoronary implantation techniques were used in this series. Mechanical stress tests were performed on 36 human pulmonary and aortic roots explanted from donor hearts. Finite element analysis was applied to obtain high-fidelity simulation under static and dynamic conditions of the biomechanical properties and applied stresses on the PA root and leaflet and the similar components of the native aorta., Results: The non-reinforced group showed increases in the percentages of the mean diameter that were significantly higher than those in the reinforced group at the level of the Valsalva sinuses (3.9%) and the annulus (12.1%). The mechanical simulation confirmed geometrical and dimensional changes detected by clinical imaging and demonstrated the non-linear biomechanical behaviour of the PA anastomosed to the aorta, a stiffer behaviour of the aortic root in relation to the PA and similar qualitative and quantitative behaviours of leaflets of the 2 tissues. The annulus was the most significant constraint to dilation and affected the distribution of stress and strain within the entire complex, with particular strain on the sutured regions. The PA was able to evenly absorb mechanical stresses but was less adaptable to circumferential stresses, potentially explaining its known dilatation tendency over time., Conclusions: The absence of reinforcement leads to a more marked increase in the diameter of the PA. Preservation of the native geometry of the PA root is crucial; the miniroot technique with external reinforcement is the most suitable strategy in this context.

Objective: To describe the prevalence, severity and location of pelvic injuries, including hip, muscle and tendon pathologies, as assessed on MRI in athletes participating in the Rio de Janeiro 2016 Summer Olympic Games., Methods: We analyzed all pelvic MRIs that were acquired for suspected injury as reported by the National Olympic Committee (NOC) medical teams and the Organizing Committee medical staff during the Rio 2016 Summer Olympics. Diagnostic imaging was performed through the Olympic Village Polyclinic, using 3 T and 1.5 T MR scanners. Images were interpreted retrospectively according to standardized criteria., Results: A total of 11,274 athletes participated in the Games, of which 40 (0,4%) were referred for a pelvic MRI. Thirty-seven of the 40 (92%) had at least one abnormal finding, and some had as many as 17, for an average of 4.1 pathologies per examination. Almost half of all abnormal findings were assessed as pre-existing (46%). The majority of acute/subacute injuries were observed in track and field athletes (44%), whereas the highest number of pre-existing findings was seen in ball-sports athletes (39%). Forty-seven per cent of all acute/subacute injuries were muscle injuries with the gluteus maximus muscle the most commonly affected. In contrast, most pre-existing findings were detected at the symphysis (59%)., Conclusion: Our study demonstrated a high prevalence of both acute/subacute injuries and chronic changes in Olympic athletes undergoing pelvic MRI. Muscle injuries were the most common acute injuries, found mainly in track and field athletes. Peripatellar fat pads are intracapsular extrasynovial adipose cushions that accommodate the changing shape and volume of articular spaces during movement. Variations in bone geometry, passive and active stabilization mechanisms and/or functional demands may lead to peripatellar fat pad abnormalities. While peripatellar fat pads may be affected a variety of conditions such as synovial inflammation, tumor and fibrosis, a mechanical origin should also be considered. Commonly, the clinical term "impingement" is used synonymously in the radiological literature to refer to three distinct entities of structural peripatellar fat pad abnormalities: superolateral the infrapatellar fat pad (Hoffa fat pad) edema, suprapatellar fat pad edema, and prepatellar fat pad edema, implying a mechanical origin of these conditions. The aim of this pictorial review is to describe the normal anatomy of the extensor mechanism of the knee, and discuss the relation of patellofemoral maltracking to the above-mentioned peripatellar fat pad conditions based on current evidence.

Objective: To determine the relationship of meniscal damage to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) features of compartment-specific patellofemoral joint (PFJ) osteoarthritis (OA) at baseline and 2 years later., Method: Individuals from a prospective cohort of individuals aged 50-79 with or at risk of knee OA were included. At the 60-month and 84-month study visit, Whole-Organ MRI Score (WORMS) was used to assess meniscal tears and extrusions as well as cartilage damage and bone marrow lesions (BMLs) in the medial and lateral patella and trochlea. Worsening of structural features was defined as any increase in WORMS score from 60 to 84 months. Logistic regression was used to determine the cross-sectional and longitudinal relation of meniscus damage to features of compartment-specific PFJ OA., Results: Relative to knees without lateral meniscal pathology at baseline, those with grades 3-4 lateral meniscal tear and extrusion had greater risk of worsening of cartilage damage in the lateral PFJ 2 years later (Risk ratio: 1.7 [95% CI: 1.1-2.7) and (1.7 [1.2-2.5]), respectively. Relative to those without medial meniscal pathology at baseline, those with grades 1-2 (0.6 [0.4-0.9]) and 3-4 (0.7 [0.5-1.0]) medial meniscal tears had lower risk of worsening of BMLs in the medial PFJ 2 years later., Conclusion: Meniscal tear and extrusion are associated with increased risk of medial and lateral PFJ OA and more severe meniscal pathology is associated with worsening of PFJ OA 2 years later. Purpose To describe the occurrence of imaging-depicted sports-related stress injuries, fractures, and muscle and tendon disorders during the 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Materials and Methods Data on radiologic examinations were collected and retrospectively analyzed centrally by two board-certified musculoskeletal radiologists (with a third musculoskeletal radiologist acting as an adjudicator in case of discrepancies). Descriptive data on all imaging examinations by using radiography, ultrasonography (US), and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging were collected and analyzed according to imaging modality, country of origin of the athletes, type of sport, and type and location of injury. Results There were 1101 injuries that occurred in 11 274 (9.8%) athletes. A total of 1015 radiologic examinations were performed, including 304 (30.0%) radiographic, 104 (10.2%) US, and 607 (59.8%) MR examinations. Excluding 10 athletes categorized as refugees, athletes from Africa had the highest utilization rate (14.8%, 148 of 1001). Athletes from Europe underwent the most examinations with 103 radiographic, 39 US, and 254 MR examinations. Gymnastics (artistic) had the highest percentage of athletes who underwent imaging (15.5%, 30 of 194). Athletics (track and field) had the most examinations (293, including 53 radiographic, 50 US, and 190 MR examinations). Conclusion The overall occurrence of imaging used to help diagnose sports-related injuries at the Rio de Janeiro 2016 Summer Olympics was 6.4% of athletes. Along the littoral, a growing number of anthropogenic structures have caused substantial habitat destruction. Despite their detrimental impact, these constructions could play a role in the functioning of coastal ecosystems. The objective of this work was to assess the distribution of juvenile coastal fish along a seascape composed of various natural and artificial habitats in order to determine the potential role of coastal infrastructures as juvenile habitat. We surveyed juvenile populations on various infrastructures and natural sites along a 100 km shoreline of the French Mediterranean coast. Juvenile densities varied according to the level of artificialization of the sites. Densities were the highest on coastal defense structures, intermediate in natural sites and lowest in harbors. Focusing inside harbors revealed highly variable densities depending on the type of habitat, with densities on ripraps or jetties that were equivalent to those of natural sites. Our results underline the importance of anthropogenic structures as potential juvenile habitats, which is too often not considered in management plans., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier Ltd. Degenerative changes in the spine have high medical and socioeconomic significance. Imaging of the degenerative spine is a frequent challenge in radiology. The pathogenesis of this degenerative process represents a biomechanically related continuum of alterations, which can be identified with different imaging modalities. The aim of this article is to review radiological findings involving the intervertebral discs, end plates, bone marrow changes, facet joints and the spinal canal in relation to the pathogenesis of degenerative changes in the spine. Findings are described in association with the clinical symptoms they may cause, with a brief review of the possible treatment options. The article provides an illustrated review on the topic for radiology residents., Teaching Points: • The adjacent vertebrae, intervertebral disc, ligaments and facet joints constitute a spinal unit. • Degenerative change is a response to insults, such as mechanical or metabolic injury. • Spine degeneration is a biomechanically related continuum of alterations evolving over time.

Image interpretation was performed centrally by board-certified musculoskeletal radiologists with expertise in sports injuries., Results: In total, 11 274 athletes (5089 women (45%), 6185 men (55%)) from 207 NOCs were included. NOC and Rio de Janeiro 2016 medical staff reported 1101 injuries. Central review of radiological images revealed 156 tendon abnormalities in 109 athletes (51.2% male, mean age: 26.8, range 18-39). The supraspinatus tendon was the most commonly involved tendon (31 cases, 19.9%), followed by the Achilles tendon (20 cases, 12.8%) and patellar and infraspinatus tendons (12 cases, 7.7%). Background: Bone stress injuries are common in high-level athletics., Aim: To describe the demographics, frequency and anatomical location of stress injuries (ie, stress reaction and stress fractures) in athletes at the Rio de Janeiro 2016 Summer Olympic Games., Methods: We recorded all sports injuries at the Rio de Janeiro 2016 Summer Olympics reported by the National Olympic Committee (NOC) medical teams and in the polyclinic and medical venues. Imaging was performed through the official IOC clinic within the Olympic Village, using digital X-ray cameras and 3T and 1.5T magnetic resonance (MR) scanners. Images were read centrally and retrospectively by musculoskeletal radiologists with expertise in sports injuries., Results: 11 274 athletes (5089 women (45%), 6185 men (55%)) from 207 NOCs participated in the study. 1101 injuries were reported. Imaging revealed 9 stress fractures (36%) and 16 stress reactions (64%) in 18 female and 7 male athletes (median age 25 years, age range 18-32). Stress injuries were mostly in the lower extremities (84%), particularly tibia (44%) and metatarsals (12%), with two in the lumbar spine (8%). Stress injuries were most common in track and field athletes (44%) followed by volleyball players (16%), gymnastics (artistic) (12%) and other type of sports., Conclusions: Twenty-five bone stress injuries were reported, more commonly in women, mostly in the lower extremities and most commonly in track and field athletes. Background: Acute muscle injuries in elite athletes are responsible for a large portion of time loss injuries., Aim: To describe the frequency, the anatomic distribution, and severity of imaging-detected acute muscle injuries among athletes who competed in the Rio de Janeiro 2016 Summer Olympics., Methods: We recorded all sports injuries reported by the National Olympic Committee medical teams and the Organising Committee medical staff during the 2016 Summer Olympics. Imaging of acute muscle injuries was performed at the IOC's polyclinic within the Olympic Village using ultrasound and 3.0 T and 1.5 T MRI scanners. The assessment of images was performed centrally by three musculoskeletal radiologists. The distribution of injuries by anatomic location and sports discipline and the severity of injuries were recorded., Results: In total, 11 274 athletes from 207 teams were included. A total of 1101 injuries were reported. Central review of radiological images revealed 81 acute muscle injuries in 77 athletes (66% male, mean age: 25.4 years, range 18-38 years). Athletics (track and field) athletes were the most commonly affected (n=39, 48%), followed by football players (n=9, 11%). The majority of injuries affected muscles from lower limbs (n=68, 84%), with the hamstring being the most commonly involved. Background/aim: In high-level Olympic athletes, many spinal pathologies arise from overuse, while others are the result of acute injury. Our aim is to analyse the epidemiology of spinal pathologies detected on MRI in athletes participating in the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Summer Olympics., Methods: In this retrospective study, all spine MRIs performed during the 2016 Rio Games were analysed. Descriptive data from the MRIs were tabulated and analysed for disc degeneration, spinal canal and/or neural foraminal narrowing, and acute/chronic fractures. Data were analysed by sport, continent of origin, age and sex., Results: Of 11 274 athletes participating in the Olympic games, 100 received spine MRI. Fifty-two of the 100 (52%) athletes who received cervical, thoracic and/or lumbar spine MRI showed moderate to severe spinal disease. The highest sport-specific incidence of moderate to severe spine disease was seen in aquatic diving athletes (67%, 3 per 100 divers). Weightlifting had the second highest sport-specific incidence of spine disease (67%, 1.5 per 100 weightlifters). Athletics used the most spine MRIs (31 of 107 MRIs, 29%). European athletes had more spine MRIs than all other continents combined (55 of 107 MRIs, 51%). The effect of stimuli size on the mental rotation of abstract objects has been extensively investigated, yet its effect on the mental rotation of bodily stimuli remains largely unexplored. Depending on the experimental design, mentally rotating bodily stimuli can elicit object-based transformations, relying mainly on visual processes, or egocentric transformations, which typically involve embodied motor processes. The present study included two mental body rotation tasks requiring either a same-different or a laterality judgment, designed to elicit object-based or egocentric transformations, respectively. Our findings revealed shorter response times for large-sized stimuli than for small-sized stimuli only for greater angular disparities, suggesting that the more unfamiliar the orientations of the bodily stimuli, the more stimuli size affected mental processing. Importantly, when comparing size transformation times, results revealed different patterns of size transformation times as a function of angular disparity between object-based and egocentric transformations. This indicates that mental size transformation and mental rotation proceed differently depending on the mental rotation strategy used. These findings are discussed with respect to the different spatial manipulations involved during object-based and egocentric transformations.

Replacing defective retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells with those derived from human embryonic stem cells (hESCs) or human-induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs) is a potential strategy for treating retinal degenerative diseases. Early clinical trials have demonstrated that hESC-derived or hiPSC-derived RPE cells can be delivered safely as a suspension to the human eye. The next step is transplantation of hESC/hiPSC-derived RPE cells as cell sheets that are more physiological. We have developed a tissue-engineered product consisting of hESC-derived RPE cells grown as sheets on human amniotic membrane as a biocompatible substrate. We established a surgical approach to engraft this tissue-engineered product into the subretinal space of the eyes of rats with photoreceptor cell loss. We show that transplantation of the hESC-RPE cell sheets grown on a human amniotic membrane scaffold resulted in rescue of photoreceptor cell death and improved visual acuity in rats with retinal degeneration compared to hESC-RPE cells injected as a cell suspension. These results suggest that tissue-engineered hESC-RPE cell sheets produced under good manufacturing practice conditions may be a useful approach for treating diseases of retinal degeneration., (Copyright © 2017 The Authors, some rights reserved; exclusive licensee American Association for the Advancement of Science. A total of 38 individuals of the heavily exploited little gulper shark Centrophorus uyato were collected from Lebanese coastal waters using bottom longlines and trammel nets of different meshes at depths ranging from 115 to 600 m between May 2013 and February 2014. Their total lengths were between 45 and 94 cm and their total mass was from 870 to 6700 g. The sex ratio was not significantly different from 1:1, with 20 males and 18 females, but bathymetric sexual segregation occurred. Catch per net setting (CNS) was used as a relative abundance index to detect spatial distribution; trammel nets showed largest CNS ranging from 4·9 to 5·45 kg per unit effort in the north and south, at depths from 120 to 200 m, during spring and summer. The mass-length relationships demonstrated negative allometric growth (b < 3) (males: M T  = 0.3585L T 2·071  = 0·94; females: M 2  = 0·94; females: M T  = 0.0239L T 2·735 , r 2  = 0·64). The condition factor as well as the gonado-somatic and hepato-somatic indices of C. uyato in the study area were also calculated. Objective: To evaluate the association between thoracic kyphosis and physical function., Design: Prospective cohort., Setting: Framingham, Massachusetts., Participants: Framingham Heart Study Offspring and Third Generation cohort members who had computed tomography (CT) performed between 2002 and 2005 and physical function assessed a mean 3.4 years later (N = 1,100; mean age 61 ± 8, range 50-85)., Measurements: Thoracic kyphosis (Cobb angle, T4-T12) was measured in degrees using supine CT scout images. Participants were categorized according to Cobb angle to compare those in the highest quartile (Q4, most-severe kyphosis) with those in the lowest quartiles (Q1-Q3). Quick walking speed (m/s), chair-stand time (seconds), grip strength (kg), and self-reported impairments were assessed using standardized procedures. Analyses were adjusted for age, height, weight, smoking, follow-up time, vertebral fractures, and prevalent spinal degeneration., Results: Thoracic kyphosis was not associated with physical function in women or men, and these results were consistent in those younger than 65 and those aged 65 and older. For example, walking speed was similar in adults younger than 65 with and without severe kyphosis (women, Q4: 1.38 m/s, Q1-Q3: 1.40 m/s, P = .69; men, Q4: 1.65 m/s, Q1-Q3: 1.60 m/s; P = .39)., Conclusion: In healthy relatively high-functioning women and men, kyphosis severity was not associated with subsequent physical function. Purpose: To determine the relation of superolateral Hoffa's fat pad (SHFP) hyperintensity to cartilage damage and bone marrow lesions (BMLs) in the patellofemoral joint (PFJ) and tibiofemoral joint (TFJ)., Methods: We used data from the 60 and 84-month study visits from the Multicenter Osteoarthritis (MOST) study. SHFP hyperintensity and Hoffa-synovitis were graded from 0 to 3. Cartilage damage and BMLs were scored in the PFJ and TFJ. Structural damage was defined as: any cartilage damage, full-thickness cartilage damage and any BML. Worsening structural damage was defined as any increase in cartilage and BML scores. Logistic regression was used to determine the relation of SHFP hyperintensity and Hoffa-synovitis (>0) to structural damage, adjusting for age, sex and body mass index (BMI)., Results: 1,094 knees were included in the study. Compared to knees without SHFP hyperintensity, those with SHFP hyperintensity had 1.2 (95% Confidence Interval (CI), 1.1-1.4), 1.7 (1.3-2.3) and 1.6 (1.3-1.9) times the prevalence of any cartilage damage, full-thickness cartilage damage, and BMLs in the lateral PFJ respectively, and 1.1 (1.0-1.2), 1.3 (1.0-1.8), and 1.2 (1.0-1.4) times the prevalence of any cartilage damage, full-thickness cartilage damage, and BMLs in the medial PFJ. SHFP hyperintensity was associated with worsening BMLs in the medial PFJ (RR: 1.4 (1.0-1.9)). In general, there was no relation between SHFP hyperintensity and TFJ outcomes. Hoffa-synovitis was associated both cross-sectionally and longitudinally with structural damage, regardless of definition, in all compartments., Conclusion: SHFP hyperintensity may be a local marker of PFJ structural damage., (Copyright © 2017. Purpose To determine the relationship of patellofemoral joint alignment and trochlear morphology to superolateral Hoffa fat pad (SHFP) edema on magnetic resonance (MR) images in older adults with or at risk for osteoarthritis of the knee. Materials and Methods Institutional review board approval and written informed consent were obtained from all subjects. The Multicenter Osteoarthritis Study is a prospective cohort study of older adults with or at risk for osteoarthritis of the knee. Subjects were recruited from Birmingham, Alabama, and Iowa City, Iowa. In this cross-sectional study, patellofemoral joint alignment (bisect offset, patellar tilt angle, and Insall-Salvati ratio), trochlear morphology (sulcus angle, lateral and medial trochlear inclination, and trochlear angle) and SHFP edema were assessed on MR images of the knee. Measures of alignment and morphology were divided into quartiles, and SHFP was determined to be present or absent. Separate logistic regression models were used to determine the relationship of each measure of alignment and morphology to the presence of SHFP edema, with adjustments for age, sex, and body mass index. Results SHFP edema was present in 152 (13.4%) of the 1134 knees that were included. When compared with knees with measurements in the lowest quartile, knees with measurements in the highest quartile for trochlear angle, bisect offset, and Insall-Salvati ratios were 1.6 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.0, 2.6), 2.3 (95% CI: 1.3, 4.0), and 8.9 (95% CI: 4.7, 16.9) times more likely to show SHFP edema, respectively. No relationship was found between other measures and SHFP edema. Conclusion A more anterior trochlear facet, a more laterally displaced patella, and knees with patella alta were significantly associated with SHFP edema on MR images in subjects with or at risk for osteoarthritis of the knee. © RSNA, 2017.

With technologic advances and the availability of sophisticated computer software and analytical strategies, imaging plays an increasingly important role in understanding the disease process of osteoarthritis (OA). Radiography has limitations in that it can visualize only limited features of OA, such as osteophytes and joint space narrowing, but remains the most commonly used modality for establishing an imaging-based diagnosis of OA. Objective: To give a narrative overview of meniscal tears with a radiologic emphasis on the morphologic type, technical considerations, and on the relevance of the type of meniscal tear in the context of osteoarthritis (OA) research., Design: Total 20 years of the PubMed database were searched for epidemiological, radiological, arthroscopic and biomechanical reports, and review articles focusing on meniscal tears in middle-aged and older individuals, in the setting of OA. Case reports, publications on meniscal tears in young active individuals, and publications not in English were excluded., Results: Meniscal intra-substance signal abnormalities are associated with an increased risk of a degenerative meniscal tear in the same segment. Posterior radial tears of the medial meniscus appear to be a highly relevant event in OA of the knee, with associated cartilage loss and meniscal extrusion. Radial tears are more commonly missed on MRI than other types, and should be carefully looked for on coronal and axial images. While medial meniscus posterior root tears are of "radial" morphology, there is growing interest in looking at them as a separate entity, mainly because they require a different therapeutic approach., Conclusion: There is a lack of data on the relevance of different morphologic types of meniscal tears to the natural history of knee OA, both cross-sectionally and-especially-longitudinally. Patellar fractures account for approximately 1% of all skeletal fractures and may result from direct, indirect, or combined trauma. Because of the importance of patellar integrity for knee extension and the risk of associated injury to the extensor mechanism, accurate reporting and description of fracture type is paramount for appropriate management. This pictorial essay aims to review the normal anatomy of the patella, the mechanisms of injury and different types of patellar fractures, with a brief introduction to therapeutic management. Teaching Points • Patellar fractures are classified according to their morphology and degree of displacement.• Direct trauma results in stellate fractures.• Indirect trauma results in transverse fractures.• Displacement should raise suspicion for retinacular injury.

Uncommon diseases of the popliteal artery include cystic adventitial disease, popliteal artery entrapment syndrome (PAES) and popliteal artery aneurysm (PAA). Because all of these conditions may present with pain or intermittent claudication, imaging is crucial for differentiating them and directing management. Delayed diagnosis can lead to major complications, including acute limb ischemia. Our aim is to provide an illustrative overview of these conditions in order to make radiologists aware of them and avoid misdiagnosis for timely appropriate management. Teaching Points • Cystic adventitial disease diagnosis is based on evidence of cysts within artery walls. • A variety of anatomic variations may result in PAES. • PAES may be bilateral. • PAA is most commonly encountered in men. • Acute complications of PAA include acute thrombosis and distal embolization.

Voluntary movement often causes postural perturbation that requires an anticipatory postural adjustment to minimize perturbation and increase the efficiency and coordination during execution. This systematic review focuses specifically on the relationship between the parameters of anticipatory muscular activities and movement finality in sitting position among adults, to study the adaptability and predictability of anticipatory muscular activities parameters to different movements and conditions in sitting position in adults. A systematic literature search was performed using PubMed, Science Direct, Web of Science, Springer-Link, Engineering Village, and EbscoHost. Inclusion and exclusion criteria were applied to retain the most rigorous and specific studies, yielding 76 articles, Seventeen articles were excluded at first reading, and after the application of inclusion and exclusion criteria, 23 were retained. In a sitting position, central nervous system activity precedes movement by diverse anticipatory muscular activities and shows the ability to adapt anticipatory muscular activity parameters to the movement direction, postural stability, or charge weight. In addition, these parameters could be adapted to the speed of execution, as found for the standing position. Parameters of anticipatory muscular activities (duration, order, and amplitude of muscle contractions constituting the anticipatory muscular activity) could be used as a predictive indicator of forthcoming movement. This study focuses on the population biology of the common guitarfish Rhinobatos rhinobatos, a cartilaginous fish listed as Endangered in the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List. Between December 2012 and January 2014, 67 individuals were collected by bottom longlining in coastal Lebanese marine waters at different ports at depths ranging from 10 to 110 m. The total length (L(T)) of the specimens ranged from 50 to 143 cm, and the mean ± s.d. was 76.2 ± 19.7 cm. The most common L(T) classes were between 60 and 70 cm. The total mass of the specimens ranged from 410 to 10,000 g, and the mean ± s.d. was 1841 ± 1987 g. A total of 34 males and 33 females were collected, and the sex ratio was not significantly different from 1:1. The mass and L(T) relationship showed positive allometric growth (b = 3.096 and r(2)  = 0.99), and the mean ± s.d. L(T) at which 50% of the individuals were sexually mature was 84.73 ± 5.81 cm for females and 78.57 ± 4.88 cm for males. The gonado-somatic and hepato-somatic indices were determined along with a condition factor, and parturition appeared to occur in winter. The primary prey items found in the fish stomachs during the autumn and winter seasons were Penaeidae. The results of this study will help to parameterize models of the population dynamics for this exploited fish stock to ensure the long-term sustainability of its fishery., (© 2016 The Fisheries Society of the British Isles.)

The combination of a large range of motion and insufficient bony stabilization makes the glenohumeral joint susceptible to injuries including dislocation in young athletes. Magnetic resonance arthrography (MR-arthrography) and computed tomography arthrography (CT-arthrography) play an important role in the preoperative workup of labroligametous injuries. This paper illustrates MR-arthrography and CT-arthrography findings acquired at the same time on the same subjects to illustrate common causes and sequelae of shoulder instability. Teaching Points • MR-arthrography and CT-arthrography are equivalent for SLAP and full-thickness rotator cuff tears.• CT-arthrography is superior in evaluating osseous defects and cartilage surface lesions.• MR-arthrography is superior in evaluating intrasubstance and extra-articular tendinous injuries.

The Saint Louis hospital tissue bank provides skin allografts to pediatric and adult burn units in the Paris area. The aim of this study was to analyze our activity during the last 11 years focusing on the reasons for skin discard. Skin is procured solely from the back of the body, which is divided into 10 zones that are harvested and processed separately. This retrospective study included all skin donors harvested between June 2002 and June 2013, representing a total of 336 donors and 2770 zones. The donors were multiorgan heart-beating donors in 91 % of cases (n = 307). The main reason for discarding harvested skin was microbial contamination, detected in 99 donors (29 %). Most contaminants were of low pathogenicity. Other reasons for discard included positive serologic tests for 2 donors [17 zones (0.61 %)], unsuitable physical skin characteristics for 3 zones (0.11 %), the donor's medical history for 53 zones (1.91 %), and technical issues with processing or distribution for 61 zones (2.2 %). In our experience, microbial contamination continues to be the main reason for discarding potential skin allografts. However, discards are limited by separate harvesting and processing of multiple zones in each donor.

Objective: To give an illustrative overview of Hoffa's fat pad pathology with a radiologic emphasis on the anatomy, on technical considerations, and on imaging differential diagnoses in the context of osteoarthritis (OA) imaging research., Design: A PubMed database search including only English literature and covering a 20 year period was performed. The search was based on but no limited to the query terms "Hoffa", "Hoffa's fat pad" or "infrapatellar fat pad (IPFP)" in combination with "synovitis", "OA", and "magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)". The literature search yielded 289 publications that were screened for relevance; additional references were included when these were considered of importance., Results: Several anatomic variants and pathologic conditions may be encountered when assessing Hoffa's fat pad including tumors and tumor-like lesions such as osteochondroma, tenosynovial giant cell tumor (TGCT) (and pigmented nodular synovitis) and arthrofibrosis, traumatic changes including contusions and anatomic variants such as recesses. The latter may be accountable for differences in cross-sectional area or volume changes over time. Signal changes are commonly used in OA research as surrogate markers for synovitis but are non-specific findings., Conclusions: Quantitative approaches to evaluate 3D parameters of Hoffa's fat pad are increasingly applied and their role in regard to structural progression and clinical manifestations of disease needs to be further elucidated. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-based semi-quantitative (SQ) methods applied to knee osteoarthritis (OA) have been introduced during the last decade and have fundamentally changed our understanding of knee OA pathology since then. Several epidemiological studies and clinical trials have used MRI-based SQ methods to evaluate different outcome measures. Interest in MRI-based SQ scoring system has led to continuous update and refinement. This article reviews the different SQ approaches for MRI-based whole organ assessment of knee OA and also discuss practical aspects of whole joint assessment.

Purpose: To validate a novel quantitative MRI method to measure osteophyte volume., Methods: 90 subjects were selected from the Progression Cohort of the Osteoarthritis Initiative (OAI) at baseline and 48 months, and analyzed using a semi-automated software tool. Marginal osteophyte volume was calculated for four compartments of the central weight-bearing region of the tibiofemoral joint. Standardized response mean (SRM) for change in volume was used to quantify responsiveness. Concurrent validity was assessed via a comparison with MRI Osteoarthritis Knee Score (MOAKS) using Kruskal-Wallis analysis and Spearman's correlation coefficient. Intra- and inter-reader reliability was assessed on a subset of 20 knees using intra-class correlation coefficients (ICCs) and the root mean square standard deviation (RMSSD)., Results: The average change in osteophyte volume (ΔV) was 196 mm(3) (SD = 272 mm(3)), and the baseline to 48-month SRM was 0.72. An increase in osteophyte volume was observed for 84% (76/90) of the subjects. Kruskal-Wallis analysis across the four MOAKS osteophyte categories was significant for medial and lateral compartments of both the tibia and femur (P < 0.001 for all). The intra-reader ICC was 0.98, and RMSSD was 82 mm(3), while inter-reader ICC was 0.97 and RMSSD was 91 mm(3). A statistically significant positive correlation was observed between osteophyte volume and several MOAKS cartilage and BML scores. The reader time was approximately 10 min per knee., Conclusions: The method is responsive, efficient, and precise, making it practical for use in large cohort studies and observational research., (Copyright © 2015. Objective: It has been shown that trabecular bone structure parameters extracted from radiographs known as fractal signature analysis (FSA) are able to predict structural outcomes such as radiographic osteoarthritis (OA) progression. Little is known about their involvement in early disease or about differences between subjects exposed to increased joint loading such as young active athletes compared to non-athletes. Aim was to compare horizontal and vertical dimensions of bone texture considering athlete status, gender, previous anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) surgery and age., Design: Included were 685 patients of which 135 consecutive athletes (82% soccer players) 18-36 years old and 550 non-athletes controls in the same age range had knee radiography for assessment of subacute or chronic knee complaints. Regions of interest (ROI) were placed in the subchondral medial and lateral tibial plateaus. Fractal signatures were calculated in the horizontal and vertical dimensions. Curve fitting algorithms were applied taking into account all four risk factors in the same model adjusting for each other., Results: For the horizontal dimensions significant differences were observed for gender (estimate (E) 0.098 (95% confidence interval(CI)) (-0.009, 0.008), P < .0001), previous ACL surgery (E -0.031, 95% CI (-0.043, -0.019), P < .0001) and highest age group (E -0.039, 95% CI (-0.048, -0.029), P < .0001). For vertical dimensions, significant differences were shown for athletes (E -0.012, 95% CI (-0.020, -0.004), P < .0001), gender (E 0.056, 95% CI (0.049, 0.062), P < .0001), and age range from 28 to 32 years (E -0.028, 95% CI (-0.037, -0.019), P < .0001)., Conclusions: Trabecular bone structure differs between athletes and non-athletes, in regard to previous ACL surgery, gender and higher age., (Copyright © 2015 Osteoarthritis Research Society International. The aim of this study has been to test reproducibility of fractal signature analysis (FSA) in a young, active patient population taking into account several parameters including intra- and inter-reader placement of regions of interest (ROIs) as well as various aspects of projection geometry. In total, 685 patients were included (135 athletes and 550 non-athletes, 18-36 years old). Regions of interest (ROI) were situated beneath the medial tibial plateau. The reproducibility of texture parameters was evaluated using intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC). Multi-dimensional assessment included: (1) anterior-posterior (A.P.) vs. posterior-anterior (P.A.) (Lyon-Schuss technique) views on 102 knees; (2) unilateral (single knee) vs. bilateral (both knees) acquisition on 27 knees (acquisition technique otherwise identical; same A.P. or P.A. view); (3) repetition of the same image acquisition on 46 knees (same A.P. or P.A. view, and same unitlateral or bilateral acquisition); and (4) intra- and inter-reader reliability with repeated placement of the ROIs in the subchondral bone area on 99 randomly chosen knees. ICC values on the reproducibility of texture parameters for A.P. vs. P.A. image acquisitions for horizontal and vertical dimensions combined were 0.72 (95% confidence interval (CI) 0.70-0.74) ranging from 0.47 to 0.81 for the different dimensions. For unilateral vs. bilateral image acquisitions, the ICCs were 0.79 (95% CI 0.76-0.82) ranging from 0.55 to 0.88. For the repetition of the identical view, the ICCs were 0.82 (95% CI 0.80-0.84) ranging from 0.67 to 0.85. Intra-reader reliability was 0.93 (95% CI 0.92-0.94) and inter-observer reliability was 0.96 (95% CI 0.88-0.99). A decrease in reliability was observed with increasing voxel sizes. Our study confirms excellent intra- and inter-reader reliability for FSA, however, results seem to be affected by acquisition technique, which has not been previously recognized., (Copyright © 2015. MTT assay is the gold standard for assessing skin sample viability but it is time-consuming. Here we compared the MTT test with two other assays for the assessment of skin viability. The MTT, PrestoBlue (colorimetric method) and LDH release assays were applied to fresh and cryopreserved skin. Skin viability was considered proportional to the optical density values of the relevant analytes. PrestoBlue did not reliably distinguish between fresh and cryopreserved skin. The LDH release assay did not allow us to establish a viability index. We recommend the MTT assay for assessing skin viability.

Objective: Most MRI-based osteoarthritis (OA) studies have focused on a single knee per person and thus, data on bilaterality is sparse. Study aim was to describe symmetricity of MRI-detected OA features in a cohort of subjects with knee pain., Design: Participants were 169 subjects with chronic knee pain who had 3 T MRI of both knees using the same protocol as in the Osteoarthritis Initiative. Knees were read for cartilage damage, bone marrow lesions (BMLs), and meniscal damage according to the Whole-Organ Magnetic Resonance Imaging Score (WORMS) system. Chi(2) tests were used to compare the proportion of knees with unilateral tissue pathology to the proportion what would be expected if both knees were independent. We further used percent agreement and linear weighted kappa statistics to describe agreement of cartilage damage and BMLs in the same articular plates., Results: 51.2% of participants were men, mean age was 52.1 (±6.2), mean BMI was 29.0 kg/m(2) (±4.1). All plates showed a significant higher degree of symmetricity for cartilage damage as evidenced by weighted kappas ranging from 0.32 to 0.59. For BMLs the degree of symmetricity was higher for the patella, trochlea, medial tibia, lateral femur, and medial femur; for meniscal damage the degree of unilaterality was lower for all medial meniscal subregions but not all lateral. Kappas ranged between 0.52 and 0.68 for cartilage and 0.30 and 0.55 for BMLs for the four subregions with highest agreement., Conclusion: A higher degree of symmetricity of tissue damage than expected by chance was observed in this cohort of subjects with knee pain., (Copyright © 2015. Objective: Prevalence data on radiographic osteoarthritis (ROA) in young active athletes is sparse. Aim was to assess in a matched case-control design the frequency of ROA in an athlete population and whether athlete status, gender, previous anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) surgery and age increase the odds for ROA., Design: 135 consecutive athletes (82% soccer players) 18-36 years old and 550 non-athletes aged-matched controls had knee radiography (Lyon-Schuss protocol) for assessment of subacute or chronic knee complaints. Patients with acute trauma or fractures were excluded. Radiographs were graded according to the Kellgren-Lawrence and OARSI grading schemes. In addition, medial and lateral intercondylar notch osteophytes were scored. We used logistic regression model to assess the association of ROA and specific radiographic OA features with athlete status, prior ACL surgery, gender and age, adjusting for each other., Results: 19.4% of patients were 18-22 years old, 26.4% were 23-27, 22.6% were 28-32, and 31.5% were 33-36 years old. 18.7% were female and 8.8% had previous ACL surgery. 8.5% had ROA and 6.0% had evidence of JSN. The adjusted odds ratios (aOR) for ROA were 2.8 (95% confidence interval 1.4, 5.5) for athletes, 7.0 (3.5, 13.9) for previous ACL surgery and 3.3 (1.2, 9.0) for age range 32-36. Athlete status significantly increased odds for tibiofemoral osteophytes [aOR 2.9 (1.6, 5.4)] and comparably for notch osteophytes [aOR 2.3 (1.1, 4.7)]., Conclusions: Athlete status, higher age and previous ACL surgery increase the risk of ROA with surgery being the strongest risk factor., (Copyright © 2014 Osteoarthritis Research Society International. Objective: The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy of HES 130/0.4 coloading compared to normal saline solution for prevention of hypotension during spinal anesthesia for elective caesarean section., Study Design: Prospective, randomized., Patients and Methods: One hundred and twenty ASA I and II patients scheduled for elective caesarean section were recruited. Patients were randomized to receive either 500mL of HES 130/0.4 (Voluven(®)) coloading (GroupV) or 500mL of normal saline solution coloading (GroupC). Spinal anesthesia technique and ephedrine administration were standardized in both groups. The primary endpoint was the incidence of maternal hypotension during spinal anesthesia for elective caesarean section., Results: Hypotension occurred in 43 patients in group C and 24 patients in group V (p=0.001). Ephedrine consumption was significantly lower in group V (P=0.005). Nausea, vomiting and headache incidence was higher in group C (p=0.006). Apgar scores and umbilical blood gazes were comparable between groups., Conclusion: HES 130/0.4 coload was more effective than normal saline solution to prevent hypotension following spinal anesthesia for elective cesarean section. Objective: To determine the prevalence of intraarticular susceptibility artifacts and to detect longitudinal changes in the artifacts, on 3T magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the knee in a cohort of patients with knee pain, and to assess the association of susceptibility artifacts with radiographic intraarticular calcifications., Design: Three hundred and forty-six knees of 177 subjects aged 35-65 were included. 3T MRI was performed at baseline and at 6 months. Baseline radiographs were assessed for presence/absence of linear/punctate calcifications within the tibiofemoral joint (TFJ) space. Corresponding MRIs were assessed for susceptibility artifacts (i.e., linear/punctate hypointensities) in the TFJ space on coronal dual-echo steady-state (DESS) sequences. Kappa statistics were applied to determine agreement between findings on baseline DESS and radiography. Changes in artifacts over time were recorded., Results: In the medial compartment, 13 (4%) of the knees showed susceptibility artifacts at baseline. Six knees had persistent artifacts and six knees had incident artifacts at follow-up. Agreement between DESS and radiography was κ = 0.18 (-0.15, 0.51) in the medial compartment. Frequency of artifacts in the lateral compartment was low (2%)., Conclusion: Susceptibility artifacts detected on knee MRI are not frequent, and likely correspond to vacuum phenomena as they commonly change over time and are not associated with intraarticular calcifications. Objectives: To compare axial T1weighted fat-saturated (T1w fs) and T1w non-fs sequences, and coronal T1w-fs and T2w-fs sequences, for evaluation of cartilage and labrum using CT arthrography (CTA) as the reference., Methods: Patients had MR arthrography (MRA) and CTA of the shoulder on the same day. Cartilage was assessed for superficial and full thickness focal and diffuse damage. Labral lesions were graded for Bankart variants and SLAP lesions. CTA images were read for the same features. The diagnostic performance of MRA including area under the curve (AUC) was evaluated against CTA., Results: When comparing axial sequences, the diagnostic performance for cartilage lesion detection on T1w non-fs was 61.9% (sensitivity) 93.6% (specificity) and 89.5% (accuracy) with AUC 0.782, while that for T1w fs was 61.9%, 94.0%, 89.8% and 0.783. For labral assessment, it was 89.1%, 93.0%, 91.4% and 0.919 for T1w non-fs, and 89.9%, 94.0%, 92.6% and 0.922 for T1w fs. Comparing coronal sequences, diagnostic performance for cartilage was 42.5%, 97.5%, 89.8% and 0.702 for T1w fs, and 38.4%, 98.7%, 90.2%, and 0.686 for T2w fs. For the labrum it was 85.1%, 87.5%, 86.2%, and 0.868 for T1w fs, and 75.7%, 97.5%, 80.8% and 0.816 for T2w fs., Conclusions: Axial T1w fs and T1w non-fs sequences are comparable in their ability to diagnose cartilage and labral lesions. Proliferative myositis (PM) along with proliferative fasciitis and nodular fasciitis are a group of pseudosarcomatous myofibroblastic proliferations. Although the histologic presentation of each is almost identical, the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) appearance of proliferative myositis is closer to that of inflammatory myopathies. We report a case of PM in which the imaging and histologic features combine typical findings of PM with unusual imaging features, suggesting of reactive (or nodular) fasciitis.

Background and Aims: The prevention of esophageal strictures following circumferential mucosal resection remains a major clinical challenge. Human amniotic membrane (AM) is an easily available material, which is widely used in ophthalmology due to its wound healing, anti-inflammatory and anti-fibrotic properties. We studied the effect of AM grafts in the prevention of esophageal stricture after endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) in a swine model., Animals and Methods: In this prospective, randomized controlled trial, 20 swine underwent a 5 cm-long circumferential ESD of the lower esophagus. In the AM Group (n = 10), amniotic membrane grafts were placed on esophageal stents; a subgroup of 5 swine (AM 1 group) was sacrificed on day 14, whereas the other 5 animals (AM 2 group) were kept alive. The esophageal stent (ES) group (n = 5) had ES placement alone after ESD. Another 5 animals served as a control group with only ESD., Results: The prevalence of symptomatic strictures at day 14 was significantly reduced in the AM group and ES groups vs. the control group (33%, 40% and 100%, respectively, p = 0.03); mean esophageal diameter was 5.8±3.6 mm, 6.8±3.3 mm, and 2.6±1.7 mm for AM, ES, and control groups, respectively. Median (range) esophageal fibrosis thickness was 0.87 mm (0.78-1.72), 1.19 mm (0.28-1.95), and 1.65 mm (0.7-1.79) for AM 1, ES, and control groups, respectively. All animals had developed esophageal strictures by day 35., Conclusions: The anti-fibrotic effect of AM on esophageal wound healing after ESD delayed the development of esophageal stricture in our model. However, this benefit was of limited duration in the conditions of our study.

Objective: The purpose of this article is to clarify the most relevant points in managing suspected foreign bodies of the musculoskeletal system on the basis of a literature review and published reports with cases to illustrate each type on different imaging modalities., Conclusion: Foreign bodies of the musculoskeletal system are a common problem in emergency departments, with more than a third missed in the initial clinical evaluation. These retained objects may result in various complications and also offer fertile ground for litigation.

Background: The mediopatellar plica is a synovial fold representing an embryonic remnant from the developmental process of the synovial cavity formation in the knee. We aimed to examine the frequency of MRI-detected mediopatellar plica and its cross-sectional association with MRI-detected cartilage damage and bone marrow lesions (BMLs) in the patellofemoral joint (PFJ) in a cohort of subjects with knee pain., Methods: 342 knees with chronic frequent knee pain were evaluated for MRI-detected mediopatellar plica (type A, B or C according to the modified Sakakibara classification). Cartilage damage (scored 0 to 6) and BMLs (scored 0 to 3) were semiquantitatively assessed in four subregions of the PFJ on MRI. Hoffa-synovitis and effusion-synovitis were graded 0 to 3. Patellar length ratio (PLR), lateral patellar tilt angle (LPTA), bisect offset (BO), and sulcus angle (SA) were measured on MRI. The presence of mediopatellar plica and its association with cartilage damage and BMLs in the PFJ was assessed using logistic regression after adjusting for age, gender, body mass index, PLR, LPTA, BO, SA, and Hoffa- and effusion-synovitis., Results: 163 (47.7%) knees exhibited mediopatellar plica (76 (22.2%) type A, 69 (20.2%) type B, and 18 (5.3%) type C) on MRI. Significant cross-sectional associations of MRI-detected mediopatellar plica and cartilage damage were observed for the medial patella (adjusted odds ratio (aOR) 2.12, 95% CI 1.23-3.64 for all types combined, and aOR 4.20, 95% CI 1.92-9.19 for type B lesion), but not for the anterior medial femur or the lateral PFJ. No associations were found between the presence of MRI-detected mediopatellar plica and BMLs in any patellofemoral subregion., Conclusion: On MRI, types A and B mediopatellar plicae were commonly observed in this cohort of subjects with knee pain. MRI-detected mediopatellar plica was cross-sectionally associated with higher likelihood of the presence of MRI-detected medial patellar cartilage damage after adjustment for confounders.

Introduction: Tissue engineering represents a promising approach for esophageal replacement, considering the complexity and drawbacks of conventional techniques., Aim: To create the components necessary to reconstruct in vitro or in vivo an esophageal wall, we analyzed the feasibility and the optimal conditions of human and pig skeletal myoblast (HSM and PSM) and porcine oral epithelial cell (OEC) culture on biologic scaffolds., Materials and Methods: PSM and HSM were isolated from striated muscle and porcine OECs were extracted from oral mucosa biopsies. Myoblasts were seeded on an acellular scaffold issue from porcine small intestinal submucosa (SIS) and OEC on decellularized human amniotic membrane (HAM). Seeding conditions (cell concentrations [0.5×10(6) versus 10(6) cells/cm(2)] and culture periods [7, 14 and 21 days]), were analyzed using the methyl thiazoltetrazolium assay, quantitative PCR, flow cytometry, and immunohistochemistry., Results: Phenotypic stability was observed after cellular expansion for PSM and HSM (85% and 97% CD56-positive cells, respectively), and OECs (90% AE1/AE3- positive cells). After PSM and HSM seeding, quantities of viable cells were similar whatever the initial cell concentration used and remained stable at all time points. During cell culture on SIS, a decrease of CD56-positive cells was observed (76% and 76% by D7, 56% and 70% by D14, 28% and 60% by D21, for PSM and HSM, respectively). Multilayered surface of α-actin smooth muscle and Desmine-positive cells organized in bundles was seen as soon as D7, with no evidence of cell within the SIS. Myoblasts fusion was observed at D21. Pax3 and Pax7 expression was downregulated and MyoD expression upregulated, at D14.OEC proliferation was observed on HAM with both cell concentrations from D7 to D21. The cell metabolism activity was more important on matrix seeded by 10(6) cells/cm(2). With 0.5×10(6) OEC/cm(2), a single layer of pancytokeratin-positive cells was seen at D7, which became pluristratified by D14, while when 10(6) OEC/cm(2) were used, a pluristratified epithelial structure was seen as soon as D7. Proliferative cells (Proliferating Cell Nuclear Antigen staining) were mainly located at the basal layer., Conclusion: In this model, the optimal conditions of cell seeding in terms of cell concentration and culture duration were 0.5×10(6) myoblasts/cm(2) and 10(6) OEC/cm(2), and 7 days.

Purpose: To assess the association of meniscal root tear with the development or worsening of tibiofemoral cartilage damage., Materials and Methods: Institutional review board approval and written informed consent from all subjects were obtained. A total of 596 knees with radiographically depicted osteoarthritis were randomly selected from the Multicenter Osteoarthritis study cohort. Cartilage damage was semiquantitatively assessed by using the Whole-Organ Magnetic Resonance Imaging Score (WORMS) system (grades 0-6). Subjects were separated into three groups: root tear only, meniscal tear without root tear, and neither meniscal nor root tear. A log-binomial regression model was used to calculate the relative risks for knees to develop incident or progressing cartilage damage in the root tear group and the meniscal tear group, with the no tear group serving as a reference., Results: In the medial tibiofemoral joint, there were 37 knees with isolated medial posterior root tear, 294 with meniscal tear without root tear, and 264 without meniscal or root tear. There were only two lateral posterior root tears, and no anterior root tears were found. Thus, the focus was on the medial posterior root tear. The frequency of severe cartilage damage (WORMS ≥ 5) was higher in the group with root tear than in the group without root or meniscal tear (76.7% vs 19.7%, P < .0001) but not in the group with meniscal but no root tear (76.7% vs 65.2%, P = .055). Longitudinal analyses included 33 knees with isolated medial posterior root tear, 270 with meniscal tear, and 245 with no tear. Adjusted relative risk of cartilage loss was 2.03 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.18, 3.48) for the root tear group and 1.84 (95% CI: 1.32, 2.58) for the meniscal tear group., Conclusion: Isolated medial posterior meniscal root tear is associated with incident and progressive medial tibiofemoral cartilage loss.

During the acute phase of a severe burn, surgery is an emergency. In this situation, human skin allografts constitute an effective temporary skin substitute. However, information about the use of human tissue can not be given to the patients because most of the allografted patients are unconscious due to their injury. This study explored the restitution of information on skin donation to patients who have been skin allografted and who have survived their injury. A qualitative study was conducted due to the limited number of patients in ability to be interviewed according to our medical and psychological criteria. 12 patients who had been treated between 2002 and 2008 were interviewed. Our results show that 10 of them ignored that they had received skin allografts. One of the two patients who knew that they had received allografts knew that skin had been harvested from deceased donor. All patients expressed that there is no information that should not be delivered. They also expressed their relief to have had the opportunity to discuss their case and at being informed during their interview. Their own experience impacted their view in favor of organ and tissue donation.

Fluid-fluid level in bone metastases is an extremely rare finding, with only five case reports published in the literature. Here we report a case of an atypical isolated bone metastasis presenting with a fluid-fluid level revealing lung cancer in a 47-year-old patient without history of cancer. The differential diagnosis and imaging features are discussed with reference to the relevant literature.

The goal was to explore the effect of a moderate-intensity exercise on egocentric distance estimates (the distance between the participant and an object in space) in physically trained and untrained participants (N = 54), divided into three groups of 18 national-level soccer players, 18 sedentary people, and 18 controls. Participants engaged in a distance estimation task at rest, and also while pedalling on an ergocycle for 10 min. at 60% of the maximal aerobic intensity. Estimates were recorded during pre-exercise, stability Phase 1 (between the 1st and the 2nd min. of exercise), Phase 2 (5th to 6th min.), Phase 3, (9th to 10th min.), and immediately after the exercise. Estimates of egocentric distance were more accurate in trained than untrained participants. Perception improved during and after the exercise in comparison with pre-exercise. In addition, the group x exercise interaction indi- cated estimation improved during and after exercise, with more accuracy in the trained than untrained participants. Fitness and moderate aerobic exercise improve the egocentric distance estimation in humans.

From January 2009 to January 2013, we treated 83 patients for aortoiliac infection by resection of all infected material and in situ revascularization with an arterial allograft. Thirteen patients (15.7 %) died during the first month or before discharge. Perioperative mortality was associated with the presence of a visceral fistula: five deaths (27.8%) occurred among the 18 patients with a visceral fistula, and8 (12.3 %) among the 65 without a visceral fistula (p = 0.11). These results confirm those of our previous studies regarding the severity of aortoiliac infection, especially in patients with a visceral fistula, and endorse our in situ allografting strategy.
