Abstract: International audience; Pluto’s landscape is shaped by the endless condensation and sublimation cycles of the volatile ices covering its surface. In particular, the Sputnik Planitia ice sheet, which is thought to be the main reservoir of nitrogen ice, displays a large diversity of terrains, with bright and dark plains, small pits and troughs, topographic depressions and evidences of recent and past glacial flows. Outside Sputnik Planitia, New Horizons also revealed numerous nitrogen ice deposits, in the eastern side of Tombaugh Regio and at mid-northern latitudes.These observations suggest a complex history involving volatile and glacial processes occurring on different timescales. We present numerical simulations of volatile transport on Pluto performed with a model designed to simulate the nitrogen cycle over millions of years, taking into account the changes of obliquity, solar longitude of perihelion and eccentricity as experienced by Pluto. Using this model, we first explore how the volatile and glacial activity of nitrogen within Sputnik Planitia has been impacted by the diurnal, seasonal and astronomical cycles of Pluto. Results show that the obliquity dominates the N 2 cycle and that over one obliquity cycle, the latitudes of Sputnik Planitia between 25 °S-30 °N are dom- inated by N 2 condensation, while the northern regions between 30 °N and -50 °N are dominated by N 2 sublimation. We find that a net amount of 1 km of ice has sublimed at the northern edge of Sputnik Planitia during the last 2 millions of years. It must have been compensated by a viscous flow of the thick ice sheet. By comparing these results with the observed geology of Sputnik Planitia, we can relate the formation of the small pits and the brightness of the ice at the center of Sputnik Planitia to the subli- mation and condensation of ice occurring at the annual timescale, while the glacial flows at its eastern edge and the erosion of the water ice mountains all around the ice sheet are instead related to the as- tronomical timescale. We also perform simulations including a glacial flow scheme which shows that the Sputnik Planitia ice sheet is currently at its minimum extent at the northern and southern edges. We also explore the stability of N 2 ice deposits outside the latitudes and longitudes of the Sputnik Planitia basin. Results show that N 2 ice is not stable at the poles but rather in the equatorial regions, in particu- lar in depressions, where thick deposits may persist over tens of millions of years, before being trapped in Sputnik Planitia. Finally, another key result is that the minimum and maximum surface pressures ob- tained over the simulated millions of years remain in the range of milli-Pascals and Pascals, respectively. This suggests that Pluto never encountered conditions allowing liquid nitrogen to flow directly on its sur- face. Instead, we suggest that the numerous geomorphological evidences of past liquid flow observed on Pluto’s surface are the result of liquid nitrogen that flowed at the base of thick ancient nitrogen glaciers, which have since disappeared.

Abstract: Temperature oscillations (pulsations) were detected in aqueous suspensions of silicon (Si) nanoparticles NPs under laser irradiation with highly absorbed light. The temperature pulsation frequency was found to depend on the NPs concentration in suspension and laser irradiation power. The observed phenomenon is assumed to be caused by the local overheating of Si NPs close to the boiling point of water, while the average heating of the surrounding liquid was insignificant. The observed phenomenon is discussed in view of potential applications in local photo-induced hyperthermia of cancer.

Abstract: International audience; The geology and stratigraphy of the feature on Pluto informally named Sputnik Planitia is documented through geologic mapping at 1:2,000,000 scale. All units that have been mapped are presently being affected to some degree by the action of flowing N2 ice. The N2 ice plains of Sputnik Planitia display no impact craters, and are undergoing constant resurfacing via convection, glacial flow and sublimation. Condensation of atmospheric N2 onto the surface to form a bright mantle has occurred across broad swathes of Sputnik Planitia, and appears to be partly controlled by Pluto's obliquity cycles. The action of N2 ice has been instrumental in affecting uplands terrain surrounding Sputnik Planitia, and has played a key role in the disruption of Sputnik Planitia's western margin to form chains of blocky mountain ranges, as well in the extensive erosion by glacial flow of the uplands to the east of Sputnik Planitia.

Abstract: We report on direct numerical simulation of quasi-one-dimensional bidirectional capillary-wave turbulence. Although nontrivial three-wave and four-wave resonant interactions are absent in this peculiar geometry, we show that an energy transfer between scales still occurs concentrated around the linear dispersion relation that is broadened by nonlinearity. The wave spectrum displays a clear wave number power-law scaling that is found to be in good agreement with the dimensionally prediction for capillary-wave turbulence involving four-wave interactions. The carried out high-order correlation analysis (bicoherence and tricoherence) confirms quantitatively the dominant role of four-wave quasi-resonant interactions. The Kolmogorov-Zakharov spectrum constant is also estimated numerically. Abstract: Frequency down-conversion (difference frequency generation) of a multiline Q-switched CO laser with a ZnGeP2 crystal was numerically studied. Two options of the CO laser spectrum were considered: “narrow” (44 lines) and “broad” (150 lines) ones. An influence of the ZnGeP2 crystal absorption on THz generation was taken into account and was shown to be significant. It affected optimal phase-matching angle, THz spectrum and frequency conversion efficiency, which were optimized by the crystal length. Maximal frequency conversion efficiency of 0.007% was numerically obtained for the “narrow” spectrum due to less influence of the crystal absorption.

Abstract: We are using the LOw-Frequency ARray (LOFAR) to perform the LOFAR Tied-Array All-Sky (LOTAAS) survey for pulsars and fast transients. Here, we present the astrometric and rotational parameters of 20 pulsars discovered as part of LOTAAS. These pulsars have regularly been observed with LOFAR at 149 MHz and the Lovell telescope at 1532 MHz, supplemented by some observations with the Lovell telescope at 334 MHz and the Nançay Radio Telescope at 1484 MHz. Timing models are calculated for the 20 pulsars, some of which are among the slowest spinning pulsars known. PSR J1236 − 0159 rotates with a period P ∼ 3.6 s, while five additional pulsars show P > 2 s. Also, the spin-down rates P˙P˙ are, on average, low, with PSR J0815 + 4611 showing P˙∼4×10−18. Some of the pulse profiles, generically single-peaked, present complex shapes evolving with frequency. Multifrequency flux measurements show that these pulsars have generically relatively steep spectra but exceptions are present, with values ranging between ∼−4 and −1. Among the pulsar sample, a large fraction shows large single-pulse variability, with four pulsars being undetectable more than 15 per cent15 per cent of the time and one tentatively classified as a Rotating Radio Transient. Two single-peaked pulsars show drifting sub-pulses.

Abstract: Measurements by the REMS/UV sensor onboard the MSL Curiosity rover constitute the first in situ dataset of UV radiation flux at the surface of Mars. Due to its position on the Curiosity deck, the UV sensor has been directly exposed to dust deposition. Inaccuracies in the original angular response calibration functions have led to discrepancies between measured and physically-expected UV fluxes when the solar zenith angle (θ) relative to the rover frame is between 20 and 55 . Here we present a methodology to correct UV fluxes when θ< 55 for both effects, and show results of the corrected data set for the first 2003 sols (∼3 Martian Years, MY) of the MSL mission, from L∼s151∘ in MY 31 to L∼s149∘ in MY 34. Close to noon, when θ values are typically < 30 , relative differences between corrected and original UV fluxes are ∼35 – 40% on average. Outside hours close to noon, when θ is typically > 30 , relative differences are greater than 100%. Measurements acquired when 20 < θ< 55 represent ∼45% of the whole dataset with θ< 90 . UV fluxes generated in this study are available in the NASA Planetary Data System (https://atmos.nmsu.edu/PDS/data/mslrem_1001/DATA_UV_CORRECTED/), and are important to study the effect of UV radiation on the variability of atmospheric constituents, to recreate accurate UV doses for biological laboratory experiments, to perform combined analyses of satellite and ground-based measurements, and to allow comparisons of the UV radiation environment at different locations with the upcoming ExoMars 2020 and Mars 2020 missions., With funding from the Spanish government through the "María de Maeztu Unit of Excellence" accreditation (MDM-2017-0737)

Abstract: International audience; Energy Trion Exciton The low-temperature emission spectrum of CdSe colloidal nanoplatelets (NPLs) consists of two narrow lines. The high-energy line stems from the recombination of neutral excitons. The origin of the low-energy line is currently debated. We experimentally study the spectral shift, emission dynamics, and spin polarization of both lines at low temperatures down to 1.5 K and in high magnetic fields up to 60 T, and show that the low energy line originates from the recombination of negatively charged excitons (trions). This assignment is confirmed by the NPL photocharging dynamics and associated variations in the spectrum. We show that the negatively charged excitons are considerably less sensitive to the presence of surface spins than the neutral excitons. The trion binding energy in 3-monolayer-thick NPLs is as large as 30 meV, which is four times larger than its value in two-dimensional limit of a conventional CdSe quantum well confined between semiconductor barriers. A considerable part of this enhancement is gained by the di-electric enhancement effect, that is due to the small dielectric constant of the environment surrounding the NPLs.

Abstract: Nuclear nanomedicine is an emerging field, which utilizes nanoformulations of nuclear agents to increase their local concentration at targeted sites for a more effective nuclear therapy at a considerably reduced radiation dosage. This field needs the development of methods for controlled fabrication of nuclear agents carrying nanoparticles with low polydispersity and with high colloidal stability in aqueous dispersions. In this paper, we apply methods of femtosecond (fs) laser ablation in deionized water to fabricate stable aqueous dispersion of 152Sm-enriched samarium oxide nanoparticles (NPs), which can capture neutrons to become 153Sm beta-emitters for nuclear therapy. We show that direct ablation of a 152Sm-enriched samarium oxide target leads to widely size- and shape-dispersed populations of NPs with low colloidal stability. However, by applying a second fs laser fragmentation step to the dispersion of initially formed colloids, we achieve full homogenization of NPs size characteristics, while keeping the same composition. We also demonstrate the possibility for wide-range tuning of the mean size of Sm-based NPs by varying laser energy during the ablation or fragmentation step. The final product presents dispersed solutions of samarium oxide NPs with relatively narrow size distribution, having spherical shape, a controlled mean size between 7 and 70 nm and high colloidal stability. The formed NPs can also be of importance for catalytic and biomedical applications.

Abstract: We present a framework based on the atomistic continuum model, combining the Molecular Dynamics (MD) and Two Temperature Model (TTM) approaches, to characterize the growth of metal nanoparticles (NPs) under ultrashort laser ablation from a solid target in water ambient. The model is capable of addressing the kinetics of fast non-equilibrium laser-induced phase transition processes at atomic resolution, while in continuum it accounts for the effect of free carriers, playing a determinant role during short laser pulse interaction processes with metals. The results of our simulations clarify possible mechanisms, which can be responsible for the observed experimental data, including the presence of two populations of NPs, having a small (5&ndash, 15 nm) and larger (tens of nm) mean size. The formed NPs are of importance for a variety of applications in energy, catalysis and healthcare.

Abstract: International audience; Surface-enhanced IR absorption (SEIRA) microscopy was used to reveal main chemical and physical interactions between Staphylococcus aureus bacteria and different laser-nanostructured bactericidal Si surfaces via simultaneous chemical enhancement of the corresponding IR-absorption in the intact functional chemical groups. A cleaner, less passivated surface of Si nanoripples, laser-patterned in water, exhibits much stronger enhancement of SEIRA signals compared to the bare Si wafer, the surface coating of oxidized Si nanoparticles and oxidized/carbonized Si (nano) ripples, laser-patterned in air and water. Additional very strong bands emerge in the SEIRA spectra on the clean Si nanoripples, indicating the potential chemical modifications in the bacterial membrane and nucleic acids during the bactericidal effect.

Abstract: Silicon-rich nitride nanocomposites with stable multicolour photoluminescence (PL) are developed in this work. Firstly, a single PL band can be adjusted in the visible spectral range. Secondly, simultaneous emission of an additional PL band is achieved due to boron-doping of the nanocomposites. Impact of thermal annealing of the silicon nitride films in different atmospheres at various temperatures on their PL spectra is studied. Processes responsible for multicolour emission in the boron-doped nanocomposites are discussed. The developed nanocomposites can be further applied for nanothermometry or biosensing applications. They can be also used for synthesis of silicon nanoparticles with multicolour PL. Intense violet-based multicolour photoluminescence of silicon nitride nanocomposite with tunable emission position is achieved.

Abstract: Nucleoside diphosphate kinases (Nmes or NDPKs) have been implicated in a multitude of cellular processes, including an important role in metastasis suppression, and several enzymatic activities have been assigned to the Nme family. Nevertheless, for many of these processes, it has not been possible to establish a strong connection between Nme enzymatic activity and the relevant biological function. We hypothesized that, in addition to its known enzymatic functions, members of the Nme family might also regulate signaling cascades by acting on key signal transducers. Accordingly, here we show that Nme1 directly interacts with the calcium/calmodulin-dependent kinase II (CaMKII). Using purified proteins, we monitored the phosphorylation of a number of CaMKII substrates and determined that at nanomolar levels Nme1 enhances the phosphorylation of T-type substrates; this modulation shifts to inhibition at low micromolar concentrations. Specifically, the autophosphorylation of CaMKII at Thr286 is completely inhibited by 2 μM Nme1, a feature that distinguishes Nme1 from other known endogenous CaMKII inhibitors. Importantly, CaMKII inhibition does not require phosphotransfer activity by Nme1 because the kinase-dead Nme1 H118F mutant is as effective as the wild-type form of the enzyme. Our results provide a novel molecular mechanism whereby Nme1 could modulate diverse cellular processes in a manner that is independent of its known enzymatic activities.

Abstract: We observe anomalous visible to near-infrared electromagnetic radiation emitted from electrically driven atomic-size point contacts. We show that the number of photons released strongly depends on the quantized conductance steps of the contact. Counter-intuitively, the light intensity features an exponential decay dependence with the injected electrical power. We propose an analytical model for the light emission considering an out-of-equilibrium electron distribution. Abstract: The evolution of the meteorite flux to Earth can be studied by determining the terrestrial ages of meteorites collected in hot deserts. We measured the terrestrial ages of 54 stony meteorites from the El Médano area, in the Atacama Desert, Chile, using the cosmogenic nuclide 36Cl. With an average age of 710 ka, this collection is the oldest collection of nonfossil meteorites at Earth's surface. This allows both determination of the average meteorite flux intensity over the past 2 m.y. (222 meteorites larger than 10 g per km2 per m.y.) and discussion of its possible compositional variability over the Quaternary Period. Abstract: International audience; Harmful algal blooms are a threat to aquatic organisms and coastal ecosystems. Among harmful species, the widespread distributed genus Alexandrium is of global importance. This genus is well-known for the synthesis of paralytic shellfish toxins which are toxic for humans through the consumption of contaminated shellfish. While the effects of Alexandrium species upon the physiology of bivalves are now well documented, consequences on reproduction remain poorly studied. In France, Alexandrium minutum blooms have been recurrent for the last decades, generally appearing during the reproduction season of most bivalves including the oyster Crassostrea gigas. These blooms could not only affect gametogenesis but also spawning, larval development or juvenile recruitment. This study assesses the effect of toxic A. minutum blooms on C gigas reproduction. Adult oysters were experimentally exposed to A. minutum, at environmentally realistic concentrations (10(2) to 10(3) cells mL(-1)) for two months during their gametogenesis and a control group, not exposed to A. minutum was fed with a non-toxic dinoflagellate. To determine both consequences to next generation and direct effects of A. minutum exposure on larvae, the embryo-larval development of subsequent offspring was conducted with and without A. minutum exposure at 10(2) cells mL(-1). Effects at each stage of the reproduction were investigated on ecophysiological parameters, cellular responses, and offspring development. Broodstock exposed to A. minutum produced spermatozoa with decreased motility and larvae of smaller size which showed higher mortalities during settlement. Embryo-larval exposure to A. minutum significantly reduced growth and settlement of larvae compared to non-exposed offspring. This detrimental consequence on larval growth was stronger in larvae derived from control parents compared to offspring from exposed parents. This study provides evidence that A. minutum blooms, whether they occur during gametogenesis, spawning or larval development, can either affect gamete quality and/or larval development of C gigas, thus potentially impacting oyster recruitment.

Abstract: International audience; Lanthanide complexes Ln(L1)(HL1) (Ln = Lu, Yb, Er, Gd, Eu, Sm) and Ln(L2)(HL2) (Ln = Lu, Yb, Gd, Eu) with 2-(tosylamino)-benzylidene-N-(aryloyl)hydrazones (H2L1, aryloyl = 2-hydroxybenzoyl; H2L2, aryloyl = isonicotinoyl) were obtained with the aim to explore them as new luminescent materials. They were found to form monomeric species independently on the aryloyl group, and their crystal structures were determined from single-crystal X-ray data (Yb(L2)(HL2)·0.5(C2H5OH)), as well as from powder X-ray data by Rietveld refinement (Eu(L1)(HL1)). Ytterbium complexes exhibited intense luminescence, which allowed using them in host-free organic light-emitting diodes, which demonstrated remarkable efficiency of near infrared electroluminescence (50 μW/W) at low voltage (5 V). The special mechanism of europium luminescence quenching allowed using europium complexes as luminescent thermometers, which demonstrated very high sensitivity up to 12%/K. The theory of luminescence thermometry based on a three-level system was proposed, which allowed predicting sensitivity with high accuracy (error within 20%).

Abstract: We study quantum information properties of a seven-level system realized by a particle in an one-dimensional square-well trap. Features of encodings of seven-level systems in a form of three-qubit or qubit-qutrit systems are discussed. We use the three-qubit encoding of the system in order to investigate subadditivity and strong subadditivity conditions for the thermal state of the particle. The qubit-qutrit encoding is employed to suggest a single qudit algorithm for calculation of parity of a bit string. Abstract: International audience; The interior structure of the Moon is constrained by its mass, moment of inertia, and k 2 and h 2 tidal Love numbers. We infer the likely radius, density, and (elastic limit) rigidity of all interior layers by solving the inverse problem using these observational constraints assuming spherical symmetry. Our results do not favor the presence of a low rigidity transition layer between a liquid outer core and mantle. If a transition layer exists, its rigidity is constrained to 43 +26 −9 GPa, with a preference for the high rigidity values. Therefore, if a transition layer exists, it is more likely to have a rigidity similar to that of the mantle (∼70 GPa). The total (solid and liquid) core mass fraction relative to the lunar mass is constrained to 0.0098 +0.0066 −0.0094 and 0.0198 +0.0026 −0.0049 for interior structures with and without a transition layer, respectively, narrowing the range of possible giant impact formation scenarios.

Abstract: The Apollo-derived tenet of an anhydrous Moon has been contested following measurement of water in several lunar samples that require water to be present in the lunar interior. However, significant uncertainties exist regarding the flux, sources and timing of water delivery to the Moon. Here we address those fundamental issues by constraining the mass of water accreted to the Moon and modelling the relative proportions of asteroidal and cometary sources for water that are consistent with measured isotopic compositions of lunar samples. We determine that a combination of carbonaceous chondrite-type materials were responsible for the majority of water (and nitrogen) delivered to the Earth–Moon system. Crucially, we conclude that comets containing water enriched in deuterium contributed significantly, Recent samples have shown that the Moon's interior, previously thought to be anhydrous, contains water, yet how this water was delivered is unclear. Here, using isotopic analyses and modelling, Barnes et al. show that carbonaceous chondrite-type objects delivered >80% of the Moon's bulk water.

Abstract: International audience; The Deepwater Horizon (DWH) oil spill in 2010 resulted in the release of millions of liters of oil into the Gulf of Mexico. Dispersants such as Corexit 9500A were used to disperse oil both at the well-head and at the surface. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and dispersants have been shown to deleteriously affect early life stages of organisms including oysters. This study examined the impacts of chemically enhanced water-accommodated fractions [CEWAF; 1.29–26.14 µg/l tPAH50 (a sum of 50 different polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons)], high-energy water-accommodated fractions (HEWAF; 16.53–248.89 µg/l tPAH50), and dispersants (0.625–10 mg/l) on the cellular functions (viability, mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP), reactive oxygen species production (ROS), and acrosomal integrity) and resulting fertilization success of eastern oyster Crassostrea virginica spermatozoa. While viability of spermatozoa was not affected by CEWAF and HEWAF at concentrations tested, dispersant exposure caused significant decrease in viability at the highest concentration tested. Fertilization success as well as MMP and ROS production were significantly decreased upon exposure to CEWAF, HEWAF, and dispersants. Also, although not affected by HEWAF exposure, acrosomal integrity decreased upon exposure to CEWAF and dispersants at concentrations tested. The results of this study suggest that impaired fertilization and reduced viability observed after exposure to DWH oil spill contaminants may result, at least partially, from alterations of cellular functions of spermatozoa and contribute to negative effects on oyster populations, and thus the ecology and economy of the Gulf of Mexico.

Abstract: International audience; We present a new Fe1–xRexGa3 solid solution, in which a 5d-metal––rhenium––partially substitutes for iron to the limiting composition of x = 0.10. The crystal structure refined for the composition Fe0.91Re0.09Ga3 shows the expected increase in the unit cell parameters compared to the parent FeGa3 compound, however the M–M (M = Fe, Re) distance decreases within the M–M dumbbell, indicating an increased M–M bonding density. Therein, investigation of the local structure by means of 69,71Ga NQR spectroscopy revealed the formation of homonuclear Fe–Fe and Re–Re dumbbells. Transport and thermoelectric properties have been investigated for the Re-substituted FeGa3. Electrical transport measurements showed preservation of the nonmetallic conductivity of Fe1–xRexGa3 despite the decrease of the valence electron concentration from 17 to 16.9 electrons per formula. At low temperatures, Fe1–xRexGa3 is a p-type semiconductor with the band gap of 0.4 eV, but with increasing temperature the sign of the dominant charge carriers changes. Owing to the alloying effect, Fe1–xRexGa3 displays 1.5 times lower thermal conductivity than FeGa3, which increases at high temperatures because of the growing contribution of the electronic term. © 2019

Abstract: Item does not contain fulltext Pitt-Hopkins syndrome (PTHS) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by intellectual disability, specific facial features, and marked autonomic nervous system dysfunction, especially with disturbances of regulating respiration and intestinal mobility. It is caused by variants in the transcription factor TCF4. Heterogeneity in the clinical and molecular diagnostic criteria and care practices have prompted a group of international experts to establish guidelines for diagnostics and care. For issues, for which there was limited information available in international literature, we collaborated with national support groups and the participants of a syndrome specific international conference to obtain further information. Here, we discuss the resultant consensus, including the clinical definition of PTHS and a molecular diagnostic pathway. Recommendations for managing particular health problems such as dysregulated respiration are provided. We emphasize the need for integration of care for physical and behavioral issues. The recommendations as presented here will need to be evaluated for improvements to allow for continued optimization of diagnostics and care. 17 p.

Abstract: The Sample Analysis at Mars (SAM) instrument onboard the Mars Science Laboratory Curiosity rover measures the chemical composition of major atmospheric species (CO2, N2, 40Ar, O2, and CO) through a dedicated atmospheric inlet. We report here measurements of volume mixing ratios in Gale Crater using the SAM quadrupole mass spectrometer, obtained over a period of nearly 5 years (3 Mars years) from landing. The observation period spans the northern summer of MY 31 and solar longitude (LS) of 175° through spring of MY 34, LS = 12°. This work expands upon prior reports of the mixing ratios measured by SAM QMS in the first 105 sols of the mission. The SAM QMS atmospheric measurements were taken periodically, with a cumulative coverage of four or five experiments per season on Mars. Major observations include the seasonal cycle of CO2, N2, and Ar, which lags approximately 20¿40° of LS behind the pressure cycle driven by CO2 condensation and sublimation from the winter poles. This seasonal cycle indicates that transport occurs on faster timescales than mixing. The mixing ratio of O2 shows significant seasonal and interannual variability, suggesting an unknown atmospheric or surface process at work. The O2 measurements are compared to several parameters, including dust optical depth and trace CH4 measurements by Curiosity. We derive annual mean volume mixing ratios for the atmosphere in Gale Crater: CO2 = 0.951 (±0.003), N2 = 0.0259 (±0.0006), 40Ar = 0.0194 (±0.0004), O2 = 1.61 (±0.09) x 10-3, and CO = 5.8 (±0.8) x 10-4. ©2019. Abstract: We propose an original concept for on-chip excitation and amplification of surface plasmon polaritons. Our approach, named nanoresotron, utilizes the collective effect of dissipative instability of a 2D direct current flowing in vicinity of a metal surface. The instability arises through the excitation of self-consistent plasma oscillations and results in the creation of a pair of collective surface electromagnetic modes in addition to conventional plasmon resonances. We derive the dispersion equations for these modes using self-consistent solutions of Maxwell’s and 2D hydrodynamics equations. We find that the phase velocities of these new collective modes are close to the drift velocity of 2D electrons. We demonstrate that the slow mode is amplified while the fast mode exhibits absorption. Estimates indicate that very high gain are attainable, which makes the nanoresotron a promising scheme to electrically excite and regenerate surface plasmon polaritons.

Prolongating our previous paper on the Einstein relation, we study the motion of a particle diffusing in a random reversible environment when subject to a small external forcing. In order to describe the long time behavior of the particle, we introduce the notions of steady state and weak steady state. We establish the continuity of weak steady states for an ergodic and uniformly elliptic environment. When the environment has finite range of dependence, we prove the existence of the steady state and weak steady state and compute its derivative at a vanishing force. Thus we obtain a complete ‘fluctuation–dissipation Theorem’ in this context as well as the continuity of the effective variance.

Abstract: Basaltic shield volcanoes most commonly form as intraplate volcanic ocean islands that arise fromthe ocean floor and continue to grow above the sea water level to formgigantic volcanic edifices. The volcanic edifice evolution and the internal stress distribution may be influenced by the water load of the surrounding ocean. We therefore investigate how the presence of an ocean affects the internal stress of a volcanic edifice and thus magma propagation by means of axisymmetric elastic models of a volcanic edifice overlying an elastic lithosphere. We designed a volcanic edifice featuring a height of ∼6,000m and a radius of ∼ 60 km which was build up either instantaneously or incrementally, i.e., by emplacing new layers of equal volumes on top of each other. The latter was done in a way that the resulting stress and edifice geometry from one step served as the initial condition of the subsequent step. Thus, each new deposit was emplaced on an already deformed and stressed model layer. The ocean load was simulated using a boundary condition at the surface of the model. For the instantaneous volcano growth scenario, different water levels were investigated, while for the incrementally growing volcano the water level was fixed to 4,000m. We employed both half-space and flexural models and compared the deformation of the volcanic edifice, as well as its internal stress orientation and magnitude with and without applying an ocean load. Our results show major differences in the resulting state of stress between an instantaneous and an incrementally built volcanic edifice. Further, our results imply that stress orientations and types of potential magma intrusions within the volcano as well are influenced by the loading effect of an ocean. Ocean loading reduces the effective load magnitude of an edifice via a buoyancy effect, reducing edifice stress magnitudes and substrate subsidence. Ocean loading also adds vertical compression to edifices; in half-space models, this addition reinforces the existing principal stress orientations and increases the differential stress, whereas in flexuralmodels, ocean loading reduces the differential stress and favors re-orientation of principal stresses within the edifices. Our results therefore provide new insights into the state of stress and deformation within the edifices of basaltic ocean island volcanoes with significant implications for magma ascent and eruption and edifice construction.

Abstract: Recent experiments on measuring time-delays during tunnelling of cold atoms through an optically created potential barrier are reinvigorating the controversial debate regarding possible time-delays during light-induced tunnelling of an electron from an atom. Compelling theoretical and experimental arguments have been put forward to advocate opposite views, confirming or refuting the existence of finite tunnelling time delays. Yet, such a delay, whether present or not, is but a single quantity characterizing the tunnelling wavepacket; the underlying dynamics are richer. Here we propose to augment photo-electron detection in laser-induced tunnelling with detection of light emitted by the tunnelling electron -- the so-called Brunel radiation. Using a combination of single-color and two-color driving fields, we identify the all-optical signatures of the re-shaping of the tunnelling wavepacket as it emerges from the tunnelling barrier and moves away from the core. This reshaping includes not only an effective time-delay but also time-reversal asymmetry of the ionization process, which we describe theoretically and observe experimentally. We show how both delay and reshaping are mapped on the polarization properties of the Brunel radiation, with different harmonics behaving as different hands of a clock moving at different speeds. The all-optical detection paves the way to time-resolving optical tunnelling in condensed matter systems, e.g. tunnelling across bandgaps in solids, on the attosecond time-scale.

Abstract: We study a mixed tensor product $\mathbf{3}^{\otimes m} \otimes \mathbf{\overline{3}}^{\otimes n}$ of the three-dimensional fundamental representations of the Hopf algebra $U_{q} s\ell(2|1)$, whenever $q$ is not a root of unity. Formulas for the decomposition of tensor products of any simple and projective $U_{q} s\ell(2|1)$-module with the generating modules $\mathbf{3}$ and $\mathbf{\overline{3}}$ are obtained. The centralizer of $U_{q} s\ell(2|1)$ on the chain is calculated. It is shown to be the quotient $\mathscr{X}_{m,n}$ of the quantum walled Brauer algebra. The structure of projective modules over $\mathscr{X}_{m,n}$ is written down explicitly. It is known that the walled Brauer algebras form an infinite tower. We have calculated the corresponding restriction functors on simple and projective modules over $\mathscr{X}_{m,n}$. This result forms a crucial step in decomposition of the mixed tensor product as a bimodule over $\mathscr{X}_{m,n}\boxtimes U_{q} s\ell(2|1)$. Abstract: This is the first study of the metabolic enzyme activity and energy state of the dwarf oysterOstrea stentina(Payraudeau, 1826) in Tunisia and in the Mediterranean region. The main purpose of this study was to examine the modulation of the physiological status of the oysterO. stentinadepending on the season and the presence of parasiteMarteilia refringens. The prevalence of bonamiosis and marteiliosis were established by PCR.Bonamia exitiosawas detected only in 2.91% of oysters while the prevalence ofM. refringenswas 100% (30 Ind./30) in February and 93.93% (28 Ind./30) in March. A 42–87% mortality rate was reported during the study period. Biochemical analyses were carried out to evaluate the management of the energy resources in regard to the biochemical changes of lipids and carbohydrates. The enzyme activity of pyruvate kinase (PK), citrate synthase (CS) and cytochrome c oxidase (CCO) were measured and the mean level of enzyme activity was respectively 20.31 mU mg−1protein; 12.06 mU mg−1protein and 3.59 mU mg−1protein. Carbohydrate contents ofO. stentinawere very low all year round with an average of 15.18% in dry weight, and lipid contents remain similar (11.77% in dry weight) compared with the values reported for most other temperate bivalves. Enzyme activity significantly decreased over time (P< 0.001). The energy resources of the oysterO. stentinawherein much of the energy was devoted to reproduction seem to affect the defence system.

Abstract: 13 pages; International audience; Expedition 364 was a joint IODP and ICDP mission-specific platform (MSP) expedition to explore the Chicxulub impact crater buried below the surface of the Yucatán continental shelf seafloor. In April and May 2016, this expedition drilled a single borehole at Site M0077 into the crater's peak ring. Excellent quality cores were recovered from ∼505 to ∼1335 m below seafloor (m b.s.f.), and high-resolution open hole logs were acquired between the surface and total drill depth. Downhole logs are used to image the borehole wall, measure the physical properties of rocks that surround the borehole, and assess borehole quality during drilling and coring operations. When making geological interpretations of downhole logs, it is essential to be able to distinguish between features that are geological and those that are operation-related. During Expedition 364 some drilling-induced and logging-related features were observed and include the following: effects caused by the presence of casing and metal debris in the hole, logging-tool eccentering, drilling-induced corkscrew shape of the hole, possible re-magnetization of low-coercivity grains within sedimentary rocks, markings on the borehole wall, and drilling-induced changes in the borehole diameter and trajectory.

Abstract: The fast marching method is widely employed in several fields of image processing. Some years ago a multi-stencil version (MSFM) was introduced to improve its accuracy by solving the equation for a set of stencils and choosing the best solution at each considered node. The following work proposes a modified numerical scheme for MSFM to take into account the variation of the local cost, which has proven to be second order. The influence of the stencil set choice on the algorithm outcome with respect to stencil orthogonality and axis swapping is also explored, where stencils are taken from neighborhoods of varying radius. The experimental results show that the proposed schemes improve the accuracy of their original counterparts, and that the use of permutation-invariant stencil sets provides robustness against shifted vector coordinates in the stencil set.

Abstract: We consider Cauchy problem for a divergence form second order parabolic operator with rapidly oscillating coefficients that are periodic in spatial variables and random stationary ergodic in time. As was proved in [24] and [12] in this case the homogenized operator is deterministic. The paper focuses on non-diffusive scaling, when the oscillation in spatial variables is faster than that in temporal variable. Our goal is to study the asymptotic behaviour of the normalized difference between solutions of the original and the homogenized problems.

Abstract: In this paper we show that integrable four dimensional linearly degenerate equations of second order possess infinitely many three dimensional hydrodynamic reductions. Furthermore, they are equipped infinitely many conservation laws and higher commuting flows. We show that the dispersionless limits of nonlocal KdV and nonlocal NLS equations (the so-called Breaking Soliton equations introduced by O.I. Bogoyavlenski) are one and two component reductions (respectively) of one of these four dimensional linearly degenerate equations.

The Chicxulub impact event, the environmental calamity it produced, and the paleobiological consequences are among the most captivating topics being discussed in the geologic community. Here we focus attention on the geological processes that shaped the ~200-km-wide impact crater responsible for that discussion and the expedition’s first year results.

Abstract: In spite of the fact that more than five decades have passed since the invention of laser, some topics of laser-matter interaction still remain incompletely studied. One of such topics is plasma impact on the overall phenomenon of the interaction and its particular features, including influence of the laser-excited plasma re-radiation, back flux of energetic plasma species, and massive material redeposition, on the surface quality and processing efficiency. In this paper, we analyze different plasma aspects, which go beyond a simple consideration of the well-known effect of plasma shielding of laser radiation. The following effects are considered: ambient gas ionization above the target on material processing with formation of a “plasma pipe”, back heating of the target by both laser-driven ambient and ablation plasmas through conductive and radiative heat transfer, plasma chemical effects on surface processing including microstructure growth on liquid metals, complicated dynamics of the ablation plasma flow interacting with an ambient gas that can result in substantial redeposition of material around the ablation spot. Together with a review summarizing our main to-date achievements and outlining research directions, we present new results underlining importance of laser plasma dynamics and photoionization of the gas environment upon laser processing of materials.

Abstract: During a series of experiments, bacteriological elements in scallop larval rearing were investigated: larvae susceptibility to pathogens as a function of their age, and the use of probiotic bacteria during larviculture. Younger larvae (d5 PF) were highly more susceptible to pathogenic-challenge than their older siblings, which were challenged at an older age (d15 PF). A challenge with 10 4 CFU mL −1 of V. pectenicida killed 100% of d5 PF larvae 7 days following challenge, yet killed only 9% of d15 PF larvae 9 days following challenge. Use of the probiotics Phaeobacter gallaeciensis, Alteromonas macleodii 0444 and Neptunomonas sp. 0536, provided for larger larvae, a high yield of competent larvae and, perhaps more importantly, protection against pathogen-challenge similar to levels achieved from antibiotic use. When challenged with V. pectenicida, d29 survivals were 20.3%, 85.1% and 75.0% respectively for control (no probiotic), antibiotic treated, and ‘probiotic mix’ administered larvae. Use of potential probiotic Pseudoalteromonas sp. D41 appeared to hinder scallop larvae. Future use of probiotics in scallop larval rearing would benefit from combined use of P. gallaeciensis, A. macleodii 0444 and Neptunomonas sp. 0536.

Abstract: International audience; We analyzed data from the Gravity Recovery and Interior Laboratory (GRAIL) mission using a localized admittance approach to map out spatial variations in the vertical density structure of the lunar crust. Mare regions are characterized by a distinct decrease in density with depth, while the farside is characterized by an increase in density with depth at an average gradient of ∼35 kg m −3 km −1 and typical surface porosities of at least 20%. The Apollo 12 and 14 landing site region has a similar density structure to the farside, permitting a comparison with seismic velocity profiles. The interior of the South Pole-Aitken (SP-A) impact basin appears distinct with a near-surface low-density (porous) layer 2-3 times thinner than the rest of the farside. This result suggests that redistribution of material during the large SPA impact likely played a major role in sculpting the lunar crust.

Abstract: This paper is devoted to the homogenization (or upscaling) of a system of partial differential equations describing the non-ideal transport of a N-component electrolyte in a dilute Newtonian solvent through a rigid porous medium. Realistic non-ideal effects are taken into account by an approach based on the mean spherical approximation (MSA) model which takes into account finite size ions and screening effects. We first consider equilibrium solutions in the absence of external forces. In such a case, the velocity and diffusive fluxes vanish and the equilibrium electrostatic potential is the solution of a variant of Poisson-Boltzmann equation coupled with algebraic equations. Contrary to the ideal case, this nonlinear equation has no monotone structure. However, based on invariant region estimates for Poisson-Boltzmann equation and for small characteristic value of the solute packing fraction, we prove existence of at least one solution. To our knowledge this existence result is new at this level of generality. When the motion is governed by a small static electric field and a small hydrodynamic force, we generalize O'Brien's argument to deduce a linearized model. Our second main result is the rigorous homogenization of these linearized equations and the proof that the effective tensor satisfies Onsager properties, namely is symmetric positive definite. We eventually make numerical comparisons with the ideal case. Our numerical results show that the MSA model confirms qualitatively the conclusions obtained using the ideal model but there are quantitative differences arising that can be important at high charge or high concentrations., Comment: 46 pages

Abstract: International audience; Effects of simultaneous exposure of Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas, to both a harmful dinoflagellate that produces Paralytic Shellfish Toxins (PST), Alexandrium minutum, and cadmium (Cd) and copper (Cu), were assessed. Oysters were exposed to a mix of Cd-Cu with two different diets (i.e. A. minutum or Tisochrysis lutea) and compared to control oysters fed A. minutum or T. lutea, respectively, without metal addition. Metals and PST accumulations, digestive gland lipid composition, and cellular and biochemical hemolymph variables were measured after 4 days of exposure. Oysters exposed to Cd-Cu accumulated about thirty-six times less PSTs than oysters exposed to A. minutum alone. Exposure to Cd-Cu induced significant changes in neutral lipids (increase in diacylglycerol - DAG - and decrease in sterols) and phospholipids (decreases in phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylethanolamine, cardiolipin and ceramide aminoethylphosphonate) of digestive gland suggesting that lipid metabolism disruptions and/or lipid peroxidation have occurred. Simultaneously, concentrations, percentages of dead cells and phenoloxidase activity of hemocytes increased in oysters exposed to metals while reactive oxygen species production of hemocytes decreased. Feeding on the harmful dinoflagellate A. minutum resulted in significant decreases in monoacylglycerol (MAG) and DAG and ether glycerides (EG), as well as significant increases in hemocyte concentration and phagocytic activity as compared to oysters fed T. lutea. Finally, the present study revealed that short-term, simultaneous exposure to Cd-Cu and A. minutum may induce antagonistic (i.e. hemocyte concentration and phagocytosis) or synergic (i.e. DAG content in digestive gland) effects upon cellular and tissular functions in oysters.

Abstract: Analyzing new experiments with ultracold neutrons (UCNs) we show that physical adsorption of nanoparticles/nano-droplets, levitating in high-excited states in a deep and broad potential well formed by van der Waals/Casimir-Polder (vdW/CP) forces results in new effects on a cross-road of fundamental interactions, neutron, surface and nanoparticle physics. Accounting for the interaction of UCNs with nanoparticles explains a recently discovered intriguing small heating of UCNs in traps. Abstract: International audience; To date no experiment has reached the level of sensitivity required to observe weak nuclear force induced parity violation (PV) energy differences in chiral molecules. In this paper, we present the approach, adopted at Laboratoire de Physique des Lasers (LPL), to measure frequency differences in the vibrational spectrum of enantiomers. We review different spectroscopic methods developed at LPL leading to the highest resolutions, as well as 20 years of CO2 laser stabilization work enabling such precise measurements. After a first attempt to observe PV vibrational frequency shifts using sub-Doppler saturated absorption spectroscopy in a cell, we are currently aiming at an experiment based on Doppler-free two-photon Ramsey interferometry on a supersonic beam. We report on our latest progress towards observing PV with chiral organo-metallic complexes containing a heavy rhenium atom.

Abstract: In a recent study we considered W3 Toda 4-point functions that involve matrix elements of a primary field with the highest-weight in the adjoint representation of sl3. We generalize this result by considering a semi-degenerate primary field, which has one null vector at level two. We obtain a sixth-order Fuchsian differential equation for the conformal blocks.
