Sustaining a hip fracture is a life changing event for many elderlies. While doctors and researchers tend to be preoccupied with mortality and complication rates, patients are more concerned by other aspects e.g. loss of independence and ability to remain in their own home. This study aimed to i) determine age-stratified one-year event rates of admission to nursing home after discharge, and ii) identify risk factors associated with nursing home admission.Community dwelling patients aged 60-100 years undergoing their first hip fracture surgery in 2005 - 2015 were identified in nationwide administrative registries. Outcome was admission to nursing home within one year of discharge. To assess risk factors, we performed age-stratified cumulative incidence curves and multivariate cause specific cox regression models adjusted for age, sex, social factors, and comorbidities.A total of 53,157 patients were included. One-year risk increased with advancing age from 3.2% of patients aged 60 to 69, up to 22.4% in the eldest group aged 90-100 years. Living alone and dementia were strong risk factors HR 9.22 [95% CI 5.60-15.18, p =0.0001] and HR 6.73 [95% CI 4.80- 9.44, p = 0.0001] respectively for patients aged 60 to 69 years, the effect decreased with higher age down to HR 2.75 [95% CI 2.12- 3.57, p =0.0001] and HR 2.15 [95% CI 1.88- 2.46, p =0.0001] for patients ≥ 90 years. Other important risk factors were pre-injury home care, Parkinson's disease and depression. Surprisingly, physical comorbidities i.e. kidney disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, diabetes and cancer did not increase the risk of nursing home admission.Future initiatives aimed to reduce loss of independence and nursing home admission, among patients with first time hip fracture, should devote attention to living settings and cognitive impairment rather than physical comorbidity.

The goal of ecosystem-based management (EBM) is to support a sustainable and holistic multisectored management approach, and is recognized in a number of international policy frameworks. However, it remains unknown how these goals should be linked to assessments and management plans for marine fauna, such as mammals and fish stocks. It appears particularly challenging to carry out trade-off analyses of various ocean uses without a framework that integrates knowledge of environmental, social, and economic benefits derived from nonstationary marine fauna. We argue this gap can be filled by applying a version of the ecosystem-service approach at the population level of marine fauna. To advance this idea, we used marine mammals as a case study to demonstrate what indicators could operationalize relevant assessments and deliver an evidence base for the presence of ecosystem services and disservices derived from marine mammals. We found indicators covering common ecosystem service categories feasible to apply; examples of indicator data are already available in the literature for several populations. We encourage further exploration of this approach for application to marina fauna and biodiversity management, with the caveat that conceptual tensions related to the use of the ecosystem service concept itself needs to be addressed to ensure acceptance by relevant stakeholders.Uso de Evaluaciones de Servicios Ambientales para Determinar las Compensaciones en el Manejo de Mamíferos Marinos Basado en Ecosistemas Resumen El objetivo del manejo basado en ecosistemas (EBM) es respaldar una estrategia de manejo multisectorial sustentable y holística, objetivo que es reconocido dentro de varias políticas de marcos de trabajo internacional. Sin embargo, todavía desconocemos cómo deben vincularse este objetivo con las evaluaciones y los planes de manejo de la fauna marina, como los mamíferos y las poblaciones ícticas. Actualmente, parece un reto realizar los análisis de las compensaciones de varios usos oceánicos sin un marco de trabajo que integre el conocimiento sobre los beneficios ambientales, sociales y económicos derivados de la fauna marina no estacionaria. Discutimos que este vacío puede completarse con la aplicación de una versión de la estrategia de servicio ambiental a nivel poblacional para la fauna marina. Para impulsar esta idea usamos mamíferos marinos como estudio de caso para demostrar cuáles indicadores podrían poner en práctica evaluaciones relevantes y entregar una base de evidencias para la presencia de servicios y perjuicios ambientales derivados de los mamíferos marinos. Descubrimos indicadores que cubren las categorías de servicios ambientales comunes cuya aplicación es factible; los ejemplos de datos indicadores ya se encuentran disponibles en la literatura para varias de las poblaciones. Methyl vinyl glycolate (methyl 2-hydroxybut-3-enoate, MVG) has recently become obtainable from Sn catalysed cascade reactions of mono- and disaccharides. The chemical structure of MVG present several options for chemical transformations and has great potential as a renewable platform chemical for industrial added-value compounds within e.g. polymer chemistry. Herein, we report a catalytic benign transesterification method for the synthesis of MVG ester derivatives of trimethylolpropane (TMP) and pentaerythritol (PE). The secondary alcohol group of MVG greatly complicates the reaction and requires a highly selective catalyst to direct the reaction towards high conversion while avoiding polymerization. Thus, a range of different catalytic systems, e.g. Candida Antarctica Lipase B (CALB), Brønsted bases/acids, salicylic aldehyde as well as Lewis acids were evaluated for the reaction. Despite the challenges this leads to unique derivatives of TMP and PE with an additional chemical handle compared to classic derivatives like the methacrylate and mercaptopropionate. Process intensification is a cornerstone to achieve a significant reduction in energy consumption and CO2 emissions in the chemical industry. In this context, a monolithic membrane reactor combining homogeneous catalytic gas-phase hydroformylation of but-1-ene with in situ product removal is here presented. The homogeneous supported ionic liquid-phase (SILP) catalyst consists of a Rh-biphephos complex dissolved in 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide [C2C1Im][NTf2] and immobilized on a mesoporous silicon carbide monolith. The resulting monolith is catalytically active and selective towards linear aldehyde formation, but the accumulation of aldehyde products and high boilers in the ionic liquid leads to slow catalyst deactivation. This accumulation is suppressed when bis(2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-4-piperidyl)sebacate is used as alternative solvent, where only marginal aldehyde accumulation and aldol formation occur. A polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) membrane coating of the monolith increases the aldehyde-alkene ratio by an enrichment factor of 2.2 in the permeate gas compared to the retentate gas from the reactor simplifying further downstream processing. The monolithic membrane reactor loaded with SILP or SLP catalysts presents a scalable, versatile platform to achieve process intensification for diverse hydroformylation reactions as well as related gas-phase reactions.

Nitrogen-containing compounds are pivotal building blocks with extensive application in the manufacture of pharmaceuticals, polymer materials, agrochemicals and organic synthesis. The sustainable production of nitrogen-containing compounds from renewable biomass derivatives has attracted much attention with particular interest on the reductive amination of bio-based platform molecules. Herein, an overview on the latest advances in the reductive amination of bio-based platform molecules is provided. Emphasis is primarily concentrated upon several renowned bio-based platform molecules, such as furfural, 5-hydroxymethylfurfural, levulinic acid and lignin model monomers. In addition, progress with state-of-the-art catalysts of different catalytic systems based on different reductants including gaseous H2, formic acid, NaBH4 and hydrosilane is systematically summarized and discussed. Moreover, structure–reactivity relationships, reaction pathway/mechanism and durability as well as generality of catalysts are also highlighted.

In this study, the performance of an In2O3/ZrO2 catalyst for hydrogenation of CO2 to methanol is reported in the presence of typical impurities of industrial CO2 feed gas streams. Experiments were performed with defined amounts of SO2, H2S, NO2, NH3 and hydrocarbons purposely added to the reaction mixture under industrially relevant conditions (225–275 °C, 50 bar total pressure, H2 : CO2 = 3 : 1). Comparative studies – with and without added impurities – further relate the observed effects to the behaviour of the commercial Cu/ZnO/Al2O3 methanol catalyst under identical treatments. Elemental analysis was used to determine the amount of sulphur, nitrogen and carbon residing on the catalyst after poisoning and after methanol synthesis. Moreover, temperature programmed desorption (TPD), temperature programmed reduction (TPR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) allowed identifying potential catalyst poisons formed on the catalyst surface. This work discloses that H2S and SO2 impurities led to drastic deactivation of the In2O3/ZrO2 catalyst (due to indium sulfide and -sulphate formation), while NH3, NO2 and hydrocarbon impurities have no major effect on the methanol production.

The 3α decay of the 16.62 MeV (2−, T=1) resonance in $^{12}$C has been studied for nearly a century starting with one of the first nuclear reaction studies at the Cavendish Laboratory in the 1930s. In the hitherto latest study published a decade ago a model based on earlier work from the 1960s was found to give a good account of a set of inclusive data. This model describes the decay as an l=3 α-particle populating the 2+ state of $^{8}$Be. Here we provide new exclusive data on the 3α decay of the 16.62 MeV resonance, and demonstrate that the decay is best described by a model with predominantly l=1 emission with an admixture of l=3.

To write is, in a certain sense, to experience the immaterial thoughts of one’s mind materialize in the becoming of scripture. Nevertheless, since early modernism, the writing of poetry has rarely been perceived as an unmediated transition of language, from the interior of the self to the material surface of writing. Indeed, the tendency of modernist and subsequent postmodernist aesthetics to emphasize the density, opacity and autonomy of the poem, for example through various techniques of fragmentation, draws attention to the ways in which the materiality of writing is implicated in the production of meaning. The present thesis is a study of how meaning and materiality interrelate in two poetry collections, Skäran (2001) and Täthetsteoremet (2012), by the contemporary Swedish poet Helena Eriksson. The aim is to show that these relationships are important effects of the metapoetic discourse in Eriksson’s poetry, and how they produce a certain tension or ambiguity in the writing subject's relation to body and language, self and other. Through a reading of the diverse representation of the hand in Eriksson’s poetry as a metapoetic motif, the analysis combines a phenomenological view of embodied subjectivity, with a media theoretical conception of the writing hand, as well as a new materialist approach to agency and embodiment. The method of analysis that follows from these perspectives is a close, reparative reading, where the poetic text is seen as a situational discursive act that reaches out to the reader in a communicative gesture, offering its own body as meaning.

Sore throat (POST) and hoarseness (PH) are common complaints after endotracheal intubation (EI). The aim of this study was to investigate whether tube size impacts the experiences of POST and PH after EI in patients undergoing elective surgery, as well as to document a possible role of gender. This randomised, controlled, blinded study was conducted at Aalborg University Hospital, Thisted, Denmark or North Denmark Regional Hospital, Denmark. A total of 236 patients (53.4% female, mean age 50.9 years (SD 14.0)) were enrolled from the departments of gynaecology, parenchyma and orthopaedics. The patients were randomised to a tube size of 8.0 or 7.0 for males and 7.0 or 6.0 for females. Tube sizes were known to the anaesthesia staff but blinded for patients, researchers and staff at the postoperative care unit. POST and/or PH was reported 30–60 min before anaesthesia, at 30 min and at 2, 5, 12, 24, 48, 72 and 96 h after anaesthesia. Both female and male patients experienced significantly lower levels of POST and PH after intubation with the smallest tube size. This study demonstrates that a smaller size of tube results in a reduction in POST and PH after EI for both male and female patients.

Nature-Based Solutions (NbS), a concept introduced in the late 2000s, has developed rapidly during the last years and is now frequently appearing in a broad spectrum of policies developed within the European Union. Its role in marine policies and research programmes is however still limited, but is likely to increase as NbS are adopted as key terminology in both biodiversity strategies and the EU taxonomy for sustainable financing. This will enhance the need for scientific advisory institutions to provide evidence-based advice on potential impacts of various combinations of marine NbS. To facilitate a critical debate about the prospects and pitfalls related to the operationalisation of marine NbS in an EU context, this paper provides an analysis of core definitions, potential categories of marine NBS and a suite of case studies. Coastal waters, shelf and open oceans present multiple options for testing new and scaling up known NbS, which could support both environmental restoration simultaneously with addressing multiple societal challenges, paving the way for a new level of ecosystem-based management. However, as the acceptance of NbS types will depend on ecosystem state and thus history, it will be a significant task to consistently communicate why some solutions may count as a NbS in some areas, while not in others. To conclude, the paper therefore raises a set of research priorities and policy advice aimed at ensuring the successful advice and deployment of marine NBS in support of multiple societal goals.
