In this work, the capability of computing adjoint-weighted kinetic parameters, including effective delayed neutron fraction and neutron generation time, was implemented in the Reactor Monte Carlo (RMC) code based on the iterated fission probability (IFP) method. Three algorithms, namely, the Non-Overlapping Blocks (NOB) algorithm, the Multiple Overlapping Blocks (MOB) algorithm and the superhistory algorithm, were implemented in RMC to investigate their accuracy, computational efficiency and estimation of variance. The algorithms and capability of computing kinetic parameters in RMC were verified and validated by comparison with MCNP6 as well as experimental results through a set of multi-group problems and continuous-energy problems.

Prostate cancer incidence is 1.6-fold higher in African Americans than in other populations. The risk factors that drive this disparity are unknown and potentially consist of social, environmental, and genetic influences. To investigate the genetic basis of prostate cancer in men of African ancestry, we performed a genome-wide association meta-analysis using two-sided statistical tests in 10 202 case subjects and 10 810 control subjects. We identified novel signals on chromosomes 13q34 and 22q12, with the risk-associated alleles found only in men of African ancestry (13q34: rs75823044, risk allele frequency = 2.2%, odds ratio [OR] = 1.55, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.37 to 1.76, P = 6.10 × 10-12; 22q12.1: rs78554043, risk allele frequency = 1.5%, OR = 1.62, 95% CI = 1.39 to 1.89, P = 7.50 × 10-10). At 13q34, the signal is located 5' of the gene IRS2 and 3' of a long noncoding RNA, while at 22q12 the candidate functional allele is a missense variant in the CHEK2 gene. These findings provide further support for the role of ancestry-specific germline variation in contributing to population differences in prostate cancer risk.

CRISPR/Cas9 is a powerful genome editing tool in many organisms, including a number of monocots and dicots. Although the design and application of CRISPR/Cas9 is simpler compared to other nuclease-based genome editing tools, optimization requires the consideration of the DNA delivery and tissue regeneration methods for a particular species to achieve accuracy and efficiency. Here, we describe a public sector system, ISU Maize CRISPR, utilizing Agrobacterium-delivered CRISPR/Cas9 for high-frequency targeted mutagenesis in maize. This system consists of an Escherichia coli cloning vector and an Agrobacterium binary vector. It can be used to clone up to four guide RNAs for single or multiplex gene targeting. We evaluated this system for its mutagenesis frequency and heritability using four maize genes in two duplicated pairs: Argonaute 18 (ZmAgo18a and ZmAgo18b) and dihydroflavonol 4-reductase or anthocyaninless genes (a1 and a4). T0 transgenic events carrying mono- or diallelic mutations of one locus and various combinations of allelic mutations of two loci occurred at rates over 70% mutants per transgenic events in both Hi-II and B104 genotypes. Through genetic segregation, null segregants carrying only the desired mutant alleles without the CRISPR transgene could be generated in T1 progeny. Inheritance of an active CRISPR/Cas9 transgene leads to additional target-specific mutations in subsequent generations. Duplex infection of immature embryos by mixing two individual Agrobacterium strains harbouring different Cas9/gRNA modules can be performed for improved cost efficiency. Together, the findings demonstrate that the ISU Maize CRISPR platform is an effective and robust tool to targeted mutagenesis in maize.

This paper introduces a novel, small-sized, highly integrated, circularly polarized wide-angle scanning antenna using substrate-integrated waveguide (SIW) technology at millimeter-wave frequencies. The antenna unit addresses requirements for high data transmission rates, wide spatial coverage, and strong interference resistance in communication systems. By integrating radiating square waveguides, circular polarizers, filters, and matching loads, the antenna enhances out-of-band suppression, eliminates cross-polarization, and reduces manufacturing complexity and costs. Utilizing this antenna unit as a component, a 4 × 4 phased array antenna with a two-dimensional ±60° scanning capability is designed and simulated. The simulation and measurement results confirm that the phased array antenna achieves the desired scan range with a gain reduction of less than 3.9 dB. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Medical procedures, such as radiation therapy, are a vital element in treating many cancers, significantly contributing to improved survival rates. However, a common long-term complication of such exposure is radiation-induced skin fibrosis (RISF), a complex condition that poses substantial physical and psychological challenges. Notably, about 50% of patients undergoing radiation therapy may achieve long-term remission, resulting in a significant number of survivors managing the aftereffects of their treatment. This article delves into the intricate relationship between RISF, reactive oxygen species (ROS), and angiotensin II (Ang II) signaling. It proposes the underlying mechanisms and examines potential treatments for mitigating skin fibrosis. Much progress has been made in the determination of As (III), while numerous electrochemical sensors based on metal nanomaterials with significant sensitivity and precision have been developed. However, further research is still required to achieve rapid detection and avoid interference from other metal ions (especially copper ions). In this study, bimetallic AuPt nanoparticles are electrochemically modified with screen printing electrodes. What's more, L-cysteine also self-assembles with AuNPs through Au-S bond to enhance the electrochemical performance. To overcome the interference of Cu (II) in the sensing process, the reduced iron powder was chosen to remove Cu (II) and other oxidizing organics in aqueous solutions. The lowest detectable amount is 0.139 ppb, a linear range of 1~50 ppb with superlative stability by differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry. Gastrointestinal bleeding (GIB) after heart transplantation (HT) remains a significant clinical issue. This study aimed to explore the incidence, trends, outcomes, and clinical predictors of GIB in HT patients. Adult patients who underwent HT between 2015 and 2021 at Union Hospital were recruited and divided into two groups based on the presence or absence of postoperative GIB. The primary outcomes were evaluated at follow-up. Independent predictors of GIB after HT were identified using a logistic regression analysis. A nomogram prediction model was constructed according to these independent variables, and the accuracy of the model was assessed using the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve and the calibration curve. Among the 461 patients, 40 (8.7%) developed GIB post-HT. HT patients with postoperative GIB exhibited higher in-hospital, 30-day, 90-day, and 1-year mortality (all p < 0.05). A multivariate analysis was used to identify age, preoperative warfarin, postoperative continuous renal replacement therapy, and postoperative nasogastric tubes as independent risk factors for GIB following HT. A nomogram prediction model was applied using the four variables. The area under the curve (AUC) of this model was 0.852 (95% CI: 0.787–0.917, p < 0.001), and the calibration curve was close to the ideal diagonal line. The ischemia–reperfusion process of a donor heart during heart transplantation leads to severe mitochondrial dysfunction, which may be the main cause of donor heart dysfunction after heart transplantation. Pyruvate carboxylase (PC), an enzyme found in mitochondria, is said to play a role in the control of oxidative stress and the function of mitochondria. This research examined the function of PC and discovered the signaling pathways controlled by PC in myocardial IRI. We induced IRI using a murine heterotopic heart transplantation model in vivo and a hypoxia–reoxygenation cell model in vitro and evaluated inflammatory responses, oxidative stress levels, mitochondrial function, and cardiomyocyte apoptosis. In both in vivo and in vitro settings, we observed a significant decrease in PC expression during myocardial IRI. PC knockdown aggravated IRI by increasing MDA content, LDH activity, TUNEL-positive cells, serum cTnI level, Bax protein expression, and the level of inflammatory cytokines and decreasing SOD activity, GPX activity, and Bcl-2 protein expression. PC overexpression yielded the opposite findings. Additional research indicated that reducing PC levels could block the Wnt/β-catenin pathway and glutamine metabolism by hindering the movement of β-catenin to the nucleus and reducing the activity of complex I and complex II, as well as ATP levels, while elevating the ratios of NADP+/NADPH and GSSG/GSH. Overall, the findings indicated that PC therapy can shield the heart from IRI during heart transplantation by regulating glutamine metabolism through the Wnt/β-catenin pathway. Isolated attosecond pulses (IAPs) can be readily generated via high-order harmonic generation driven by an ultrashort laser pulse. Here, it is shown that the best way to obtain the ultrashort waveform for producing a short and intense IAP in the soft x rays is to optimize the three-color (TC) laser pulse consisting of the fundamental field and its second and third harmonic fields. To calibrate it, another way of constructing the ultrashort waveform directly in time using a truncated basis set of B-spline functions is first proposed. The calibration waveform (CW) contains more frequency components up to the eighth harmonic order. It is found that the IAP by the TC waveform has a shorter duration after macroscopic propagation in a nonlinear gas medium compared to that by the CW field. It is uncovered that the CW field is additionally modified by the higher-order frequency components during propagation, dominated by the neutral atom dispersion. The effect of phase jitter in the TC waveform and the extension of the TC scheme into higher photon energies are also discussed. Currently, precise control of TC laser waveform synthesis is already achievable in the labs, thus paving an effective way for generating a useful attosecond light source in the soft x rays.
