We select, collect and preserve different source of materials from the University itself and from the Hong Kong community. Whilst we have the same goal of service and are working under the same division ASC within the HKUL, we have different scopes of collecting. The University Archives is responsible for managing, collecting and preserve all the official records of the University of Hong Kong, organically produced and accumulated by all the functions (Facilities, Departments, Units and Alumni) in order to keep its accountability, responsibilities and memories of the institutional history of HKU, regardless of formats. Whereas the Special Collections is focusing on collecting materials relating to Hong Kong for its major Hong Kong Collections, including rare books, colonial publications of the Hong Kong Government, and other publications of Hong Kong relating to its social, political, cultural and economic aspects as well as some personal papers donated by Hong Kong personalities and corporate archives. This seminar will showcase some of the materials with research value relating to the University itself and Hong Kong.

Libraries have provided music electronic resources, but YouTube and Google provide extensive music resources too. What should we choose and How? This session aims to raise the awareness of using music online resources. We invite a HKU undergraduate to talk with the Music Librarian. This report describes the development of a master plan for identifying and accommodating disadvantaged and handicapped students within the vocational education programs of the Virginia Community College System. The general project objectives reported on were: (1) to determine the potential number of disadvantaged and handicapped students by college region; (2) to identify means for providing special programs serving these students; (3) to examine the number of these students now being served in different types of specialized instructional offerings; (4) to identify state, federal, and other programs that are potential sources of support; and (5) to make recommendations on a plan that would include referral of students, provision of instructional materials, and training of needed personnel. The project's work schedule consisted of reviewing pertinent literature, contacting appropriate state and federal agencies regarding legislation and programs, examining available statistical information collected by the 22 community college regions, and directly contacting and interviewing staff and clients of a 6-college sample. Twenty-three California school districts responded to a burglary and vandalism survey conducted by the Fresno Unified School District Burglary and Vandalism Prevention Project, which represents the first phase of a developing program to reduce vandalism occurrences and improve recovery of losses. This summary compiles survey data on 18,000 occurrences of damage or loss to buildings, glass, equipment, buses, and nonspecified areas amounting to $4,500,000 dollars. The total loss recovery by all techniques utilized in the 23 reporting districts amounted to $432,000, with an average recovery percentage of nine percent. Reported onsite anti-vandalism techniques include the use of fencing, floodlighting, lexan/plexiglass windows, protective screening, burglar alarm systems, security patrols, and guard dogs. Survey results also reflect administrative measures taken, such as community action committees, neighborhood school alert systems, publicity campaigns, telephone "hot lines," police cooperation, and court cooperation. However, from the evidence reported, it appears that no effective means of preventing burglary and vandalism occurrences has been developed, and several suggestions are made for improving preventative measures. Attention has been drawn to the lack of standards for evaluating the degree of goodness of fit of patterns resulting from a principal components analysis of two data sets. An empirical sampling distribution of the statistic average trace (E'E) as E is obtained in the orthogonal procrustes problem, for various orders of A matrices was developed through a Monte Carlo approach. A method is presented which can be used as a guideline in determining whether factor structures obtained from two data sets are congruent. (Author)

This compendium of Title I E.S.E.A. program results for 1969-70 includes Language Development, Mathematics, Auxiliary Services, Intergroup Relations, Parent Involvement, Staff Development, Preschool, and Follow Through. The Language Arts Component was basically an individualized approach to reading instruction within each classroom in the Title I schools. A general trend in pupil performance favored Title I schools. Results from the standardized instruments used to evaluate the Mathematics Component indicated that the Title I program produced superior results in grades one, three, and four. Based on opinions expressed in principal and teacher questionnaires, the quality of guidance services improved during the year but still was not optimal. Approximately 200 paraprofessional aides were employed. Inservice programs varied from good to weak depending on the school. Twenty-one interns served in four schools. The question is posed as to which is better, an intern or a student teacher. Augmented library services were offered in thre schools. The Nutritional Break program is in effect at all but one school. During the the school year 1969-1970, approximately 690 study trips were taken by students at the eight compensatory schools and one parochial school. Approximately 20 percent of the study trips were out of town. Although this was generally a smoothly running program, data showed that some teachers needed to be encouraged to take more advantage of this program. (JM)

Speech and hearing therapists investigated the effectiveness of video taping as a multisensory approach to therapeutic procedures aimed at developing adequate communication skills for students with speech or hearing difficulties. They also studied the usefulness of such taping for parent counseling and inservice training of therapists and teachers. A van was used to provide a mobile classroom, thus allowing several schools to participate in the program. Over three years a total of 2366 students received services from a staff of 12 therapists who developed video tapes to assist in the identification, treatment, and evaluation of speech and hearing problems. Comparison of the results obtained from pre- and post-testing indicated that students receiving therapy utilizing video tapes did not improve significantly more than those receiving the traditional therapy. However, the parents of these students, their classroom teachers, and the speech therapists did profit from introduction of the video taping approach, largely due to the in-service training which was an integral part of the project. Designed to measure the normal development of several of the elemental skills which children must acquire if they are to become skilled readers, this study involved the design and testing of batteries of tests to measure the various reading subskills identified. The battery consists of the following tests: visual, auditory, audiovisual, visual-motor, language background factors, test behavior and attitude, instructional exposure, and mastery. [This document is one of those reviewed in The Research Instruments Project (TRIP) monograph, "Measures for Research and Evaluation in the English Language Arts" to be published by the Committee on Research of the National Council of Teachers of English in cooperation with the ERIC Clearinghouse on Reading and Communication Skills. This report evaluates Project Mission which offered graduate and undergraduate students from three of Maryland's State Colleges special training for teaching in Baltimore's inner-city schools. Partially supported by Elementary and Secondary Education Act Title I money, the program provided each student with a year's supervised experience teaching in an inner-city school, along with academic study. Evaluations of the characteristics of the students in the program, and of the program itself are included, with tables and charts in support. (KG)

This is a report of a pilot project directed toward planning an educational information network. The network will eventually connect the information processing capabilities of the New York City school system to information processing of the State Education Department in Albany. The study reported the fall enrollment and degrees conferred in higher educational institutions throughout New York State and studied how teacher personnel information was collected, processed, and then transmitted from the New York City school system to the State Education Department. The document contains samples of the various types of forms used in the reporting and also discusses the usefulness and the problems of each item of information. A chapter is devoted to the implications of the pilot project for building a State education information network that may also be coordinated with the U.S. Office of Education. A digest of the results of a sampling of higher educational institution data processing programs currently in use is provided in an appendix. (DE)

The proposed merger of the Rye City and Rye Neck school districts in Westchester County, New York, is described. An overview of the two school systems is presented, with a discussion of the principles and issues involved in the proposed merger. Based on hypothetical data for future years, an examination is made of enrollment expectations, facility requirements, and educational and financial implications of the merger. An assessment is made of alternative action which might be taken in consideration of the educational needs of the communities served, the unique requirements of the two districts, and the governmental structure within which such action might be taken.
