Abstract

What does it mean to Indigenize and decolonize a Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) program? This paper outlines the process by which one Canadian MLIS program responded to the reports from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada and the Canadian Federation of Library Association Indigenous Matters Committee that specify the implications and provide guidelines for best practices for librarianship and the information professions across Canada. In outlining the challenges of re-engineering our standard procedures, practices, and pedagogies, this paper provides a path forward for other MLIS programs looking to critically evaluate and develop their own programs.

Abstract

This article investigates the accessibility of Ontario public libraries' social media feeds. Social media plays an important role in how public libraries engage with their communities. This patron engagement outside of library-maintained websites raises questions around accessibility for persons with disabilities. Given the increasing usage of social media as a communication mechanism, how accessible are Ontario public libraries' social media feeds? Of specific interest here is the use of alternative (alt) text to describe images in Ontario public libraries' social media posts. Findings indicate a dearth of alt text in social media feeds. Abstract

Given the importance of fabricating superconducting thin-film device heterostructures, studying material interfaces as a function of processing conditions is warranted. In this work, we assess the interfacial reactions and resulting microstructural evolution at the NbN/SiC interface after thermal annealing. Transmission electron microscopy revealed the diffusion of NbN into the SiC substrate and the formation of NbN nanocrystallites therein induced by the 1400°C treatment. Raman spectroscopy is also employed to gain an understanding of the interface lattices' optical responses. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Author(s): Dudzinski, Kathleen M; Hill, Heather M; Zaccaroni, Annalisa; Makecha, Radhika; Lilly, Malin; Almunia, Javier; Frick, Erin; Feucht, Todd; Stafford, Grey; Abramson, Charles I. | Abstract: We contest publication of Marino et al. regarding captive killer whale (Orcinus orca) welfare because of misrepresentations of available data and the use of citations that do not support assertions. Marino et al. misrepresent stress response concepts and erroneously cite studies, which appear to support Marino et al.’s philosophical beliefs regarding the cetacean hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal axis. To be clear, these misrepresentations are not differences of scientific opinion, as the authors’ conclusions lack any scientific basis. More extensive review of Marino et al.’s citations reveal a dearth of empirical evidence to support their assertions. Further, Marino et al.’s approach to animal welfare is not consistent with conventional veterinary approaches to animal welfare, including their apparent opposition to use of preventative and therapeutic veterinary interventions. While Marino et al. argue that killer whales’ cognitive and spatial needs preclude management of this species under human care, misrepresentation of the citations used to support this opinion invalidates their arguments. Misleading interpretations of data relative to killer whales’ cognitive and emotional needs and specious and unsubstantiated comparisons with states experienced by humans with posttraumatic stress disorder and other conditions, represent a number of strategies used to misrepresent knowledge regarding killer whale welfare. These misrepresentations and fallacies are inconsistent with scientific ethical standards for credible, peer-reviewed journals (ICMJE, 2018), and are barriers to rigorous discourse and identification of strategies for optimizing killer whale welfare. Assertions in the paper amount to nothing more than a compilation of conclusory, philosophical statements. We would also like to mention that manuscripts such as Marino et al.’s do great damage to the fields of comparative psychology and to behavioral science as a whole.

Abstract

Family- and neighborhood-level poverty are associated with youth violence. Economic policies may address this risk factor by reducing parental stress and increasing opportunities. The federal Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) is the largest cash transfer program in the US providing support to low-income working families. Many states have additional EITCs that vary in structure and generosity. To estimate the association between state EITC and youth violence, we conducted a repeated cross-sectional analysis using the variation in state EITC generosity over time by state and self-reported data in the Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System (YRBSS) from 2005 to 2019. We estimated the association for all youth and then stratified by sex and race and ethnicity. A 10-percentage point greater state EITC was significantly associated with 3.8% lower prevalence of physical fighting among youth, overall (PR: 0.96; 95% CI 0.94-0.99), and for male students, 149 fewer (95% CI: -243, -55) students per 10,000 experiencing physical fighting. A 10-percentage point greater state EITC was significantly associated with 118 fewer (95% CI: -184, -52) White students per 10,000 experiencing physical fighting in the past 12 months while reductions among Black students (75 fewer; 95% CI: -176, 26) and Hispanic/Latino students (14 fewer; 95% CI: -93, 65) were not statistically significant. State EITC generosity was not significantly associated with measures of violence at school. Economic policies that increase financial security and provide financial resources may reduce the burden of youth violence; further attention to their differential benefits among specific population subgroups is warranted. Abstract

Thinking flexibly is a skill that enables animals to adapt to changing environments, which enhances survival. Killer whales, Orcinus orca, as the ocean apex predator display a number of complex cognitive abilities, especially flexible thinking or creativity when it comes to foraging. In human care, smaller dolphins and other marine mammals have been trained to think creatively while under stimulus control. The results of these previous studies have demonstrated that bottlenose dolphins, Tursiops truncatus, can create original behaviors in response to an innovative cue. We trained and tested a total of nine killer whales from two different facilities on the innovate concept, using the same methodology. The killer whales ranged in age from 5 to 29 yrs with 4 females and 5 males. The results indicate that the killer whales demonstrated high fluency, originality, some elaboration, and flexibility in their behaviors. Individual variability was observed with younger animals demonstrating more variable behaviors as compared to the older animals. Males seemed to display less complex and lower energy behaviors as compared to females, but this impression may be driven by the age or size of the animal. Abstract

The growth of transition metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) alloys provides an opportunity to experimentally access information elucidating how optical properties change with gradual substitutions in the lattice compared with their pure compositions. In this work, we performed growths of alloyed crystals with stoichiometric compositions between pure forms of NbSe2 and WSe2, followed by an optical analysis of those alloys by utilizing Raman spectroscopy and spectroscopic ellipsometry.

Abstract

Monolayer epitaxial graphene is an appropriate candidate for a wide variety of electronic and optical applications. One advantage of growing graphene on the Si face of SiC is that it develops as a single crystal, as does the layer underneath, commonly referred to as the interfacial buffer layer. The properties of this supporting layer include a band gap, making it of interest to groups seeking to build devices with on-off capabilities. In this work, using density functional theory, we have calculated the bonding characteristics of the buffer layer to the SiC substrate beneath. These calculations were used to determine a periodic length between the covalent bonds acting as anchor points in this interface. Additionally, it is evident that the formation of these anchor points depends on the lattice mismatch between the graphene layer and SiC.

Abstract

Although many species of Cetacea play, few detailed studies of their play exist. The present thesis provides detailed descriptions of two types of social play (sexual play and mouth-to-mouth interaction play) and one type of non-social play (object play) in belugas (Delphinapterus leucas), an Artic dwelling species of toothed whale. The group studied contained animals of many ages of both sexes and was maintained under human care. Given the unique features of different types of play, a major conclusion of this thesis is that play is multi-functional. Indeed, even a single form of play (e.g., mouth-to-mouth interactions) may have more than one function. For example, while mouth-to-mouth interactions may help train motor coordination skills in immature animals, such play may be used to form and maintain social relationships in adults. For belugas, play is serving many functions, all depending on the type of play and the age of the animals.

343. A thematic analysis of library association policies on services to persons with disabilities

Abstract

Purpose Library association policies and guidelines are important to study because they reflect consensus values of the profession. As such, they can shape the association, itself, and set the tone for the values of its individual members in their professional practice. From the titles alone, these documents proclaim themselves to be guides for the development of individual library policy. Additionally, as library and information science (LIS) graduate education programs are accredited by national associations, LIS schools pay attention to association policies and guidelines to help shape professional and continuing education. In these ways, they have a role in shaping professional ideology around a topic. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach The services to persons with disabilities policies from three national-level LIS organizations were analyzed through a thematic analysis. Findings The guidelines speak to a shared understanding of disability and accessibility around the themes of library staff, library policies and library resources and services. While not surprising, additional themes around disability context and legislation show a shared understanding of accessibility that is much broader than what the legislation requires. Originality/value An analysis of guidelines on services to persons with disabilities from the American Library Association (ALA), Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA) and Canadian Federation of Library Associations (CFLA) is of interest because of the ways these organizations intersect. The ALA and ALIA have reciprocal agreements so that students in LIS education programs are recognized as equivalents. Second, the ALA accredits library education programs in Canada. Given these intersecting relationships, the guidelines-shared notions of accessibility become of high interest.

Abstract

In conversation, uptake happens when a speaker builds on the contribution of their interlocutor by, for example, acknowledging, repeating or reformulating what they have said. In education, teachers' uptake of student contributions has been linked to higher student achievement. Yet measuring and improving teachers' uptake at scale is challenging, as existing methods require expensive annotation by experts. We propose a framework for computationally measuring uptake, by (1) releasing a dataset of student-teacher exchanges extracted from US math classroom transcripts annotated for uptake by experts; (2) formalizing uptake as pointwise Jensen-Shannon Divergence (pJSD), estimated via next utterance classification; (3) conducting a linguistically-motivated comparison of different unsupervised measures and (4) correlating these measures with educational outcomes. We find that although repetition captures a significant part of uptake, pJSD outperforms repetition-based baselines, as it is capable of identifying a wider range of uptake phenomena like question answering and reformulation. We apply our uptake measure to three different educational datasets with outcome indicators. Unlike baseline measures, pJSD correlates significantly with instruction quality in all three, providing evidence for its generalizability and for its potential to serve as an automated professional development tool for teachers., Comment: ACL 2021

Abstract

Tantalum diselenide (TaSe$_{2}$) is a metallic transition metal dichalcogenide whose equilibrium structure and vibrational behavior strongly depends on temperature and thickness, including the emergence of charge density wave (CDW) states at very low T. In this work, observed modes for mono- and bi-layer are described across several spectral regions and com-pared to the bulk ones. Such modes, including an experimentally observed forbidden Raman mode and low frequency CDW modes, are then matched to corresponding density functional theory (DFT) predicted vibrations, to unveil their inner working. The excellent match between experimental and computational results justifies the presented vibrational visualizations of these modes. Additional support is provided by experimental phonons seen in Raman spectra as a function of temperature and thickness. 349. Validating the MKT Measures: Some Responses to the Commentaries

Abstract

The author offers some thoughts on commentator's reactions to the substance of the measures, particularly those about measuring teacher learning and change, based on the major uses of the measures, and because this is a significant challenge facing test development as an enterprise. If teacher learning results in more integrated knowledge or different forms of knowledge at different points along the growth trajectory, this must be understood and captured in any assessments. Besides mundane issues involving equating of tests, content comparability across parallel instruments, etc., Kulikowich's comments suggest that there remains important conceptual and statistical work to be done before currently available measurement instruments capture growth in knowledge.
