Glasses obtained from quenching melts of superconducting bismuth cuprates of the formula Bi2(Ca,Sr)n+1CunO2n+4 with n=1 and 3 exhibit novel dielectric properties. They possess relatively high dielectric constants as well as high electrical conductivity. The novel dielectric properties of these cuprate glasses are likely to be of electronic origin. By roller quenching and water quenching melts of Bi2(Ca, Sr)3Cu2O8+δ, glasses have been obtained. These glasses exhibit two glass transitions as well as two crystallization transitions. Microwave absorption studies show the glass to be weakly superconducting at 77 K, probably due to the presence of ultramicrocrystallites. The glass on crystallization at 870 K gives the crystalline n=1 member of the homologous series Bi2(Ca, Sr)n+1CunO2n+4 and the n=2 member on annealing at 1100 K. The glass route provides a unique means of obtaining the n=2 member of the series. On prolonged annealing of the glass at 1120 K, the n=3 member seems to be formed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Lead-free perovskite materials with superior physical properties are currently explored for ferroelectric and optoelectronic applications. Ferroelectric materials that have large spontaneous polarization concomitantly possess large nonlinear optical response which is highly suitable for novel photonic applications. Ba0.85Ca0.15Zr0.1Ti0.9O3 (BCZT) is one such novel lead-free ferroelectric material with large piezoelectric response arising from existence of morphotropic phase boundary. Conventional sol-gel technique was adopted for synthesizing nanostructured BCZT (nano-BCZT) powder using citrate precursor route. X-ray powder diffraction confirmed the phase purity and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) proved that the as-synthesized BCZT was indeed nanostructured. Supportively, Raman vibrational analysis was employed to validate the site occupancies of dopants and structural correlations when compared to undoped and pristine barium titanate. Nanostructured barium titanate is extensively studied as biomarkers in second harmonic generation (SHG) microscopy for bio-medical applications. In our current work, we have explored both second- and third-order nonlinear optical response of nano-BCZT. These were found to exhibit stronger SHG signal than potassium di-hydrogen phosphate (KDP) which is a well-known SHG standard. Subsequently, we also have investigated their third-order nonlinear optical properties using open aperture Z-scan technique at 532-nm excitation wavelength in the nanosecond regime. Nano-BCZT was found to exhibit strong two-photon absorption behavior. Such materials with multiphoton absorption behavior are favorable for nonlinear photonics devices such as optical limiters and contrast agents in nonlinear optical microscopy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Stress is inevitable during thin film growth. It is demonstrated here that the growth stress has a significant effect on the dielectric constant of high-k thin films. ZrO2 thin films were deposited on Ge by reactive direct current sputtering. Stress in these films was measured using in-situ curvature measurement tool. The growth stress was tuned from –2.8 to 0.1 GPa by controlling deposition rate. Dielectric permittivity of ZrO2 depends on temperature, phase, and stress. The correct combination of parameters—phase, texture, and stress—is shown to yield films with an equivalent oxide thickness of 8Å. Growth stresses are shown to affect the dielectric constant both directly by affecting lattice parameter and indirectly through the effect on phase stability of ZrO2. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Sr2TiMnO6, a double perovskite associated with high degree of B-site cation disorder was investigated in detail for its structural, magnetic, and dielectric properties. Though x-ray powder diffraction analysis confirms its cubic structure, first order Raman scattering and infrared reflectivity spectra indicate a breaking of the local cubic symmetry. The magnetization study reveals an anomaly at 14 K owing to a ferrimagnetic/canted antiferromagneticlike ordering arising from local Mn-O-Mn clusters. Saturated M-H hysteresis loops obtained at 5 K also reflect the weak ferromagnetic exchange interactions present in the system and an approximate estimation of Mn3+/Mn4+ was done using the magnetization data for the samples sintered at different temperatures. The conductivity and dielectric behavior of this system has been investigated in a broad temperature range of 10 to 300 K. Intrinsic permittivity was obtained only below 100 K whereas giant permittivity due to conductivity and Maxwell-Wagner polarization was observed at higher temperatures. Polymer nanocomposites with ferroelectric fillers are promising materials for modern power electronics that include energy storage devices. Ferroelectric filler, Ba0.85Ca0.15Zr0.1Ti0.9O3(BCZT) nanopowder, was synthesized by sol-gel method. X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies confirmed the phase purity and the particle size distribution was determined by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Extended aromatic ligand in the form of naphthyl phosphate (NPh) was chosen for surface passivation of BCZT nanoparticles. Surface functionalization was validated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and impedance spectroscopy using slurry technique. The dielectric constant of surface-passivated BCZT nanopowder was ~155, whereas pristine BCZT nanopowder dielectric constant could not be assessed due to high innate surface conductivity. Furthermore, BCZT–epoxy nanocomposite films were prepared and analyzed by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dielectric spectroscopy, dielectric breakdown strength (DBS), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Owning to stronger polymer–particle interface, dielectric measurements of 5 vol.% NPh surface functionalized BCZT–epoxy nanocomposites indicated improved DBS and glass transition temperature (Tg), reduced dielectric loss, and enhanced energy storage density compared to untreated BCZT–epoxy composites and pure epoxy. The energy storage density of 30 vol.% NPh surface functionalized BCZT–epoxy nanocomposite of 20 μm film thickness was almost three times that of pure epoxy polymer of identical film thickness. Partial replacement of Ti4+ by Te4+ ions in calcium copper titanate lattice improved its dielectric behaviour mostly due to cubic-to-tetragonal structural transformation and associated distortion in TiO6 octahedra. The relative permittivity values (23-30 x 10³) of Te4+ doped ceramics is more than thrice that of un-doped ceramics (8 x 10³) at 1 kHz. A decreasing trend in relative permittivity with increasing temperature (50-300 K) is observed for all the samples. Barrett's formula, as a signature of incipient ferroelectricity, is invoked to rationalize the relative permittivity variation as a function of temperature. A systematic investigation supported by temperature dependent Raman studies reveal a possible ferroelectric transition in Te4+ doped ceramic samples below 120 K. The possible ferroelectric transition is attributed to the interactions between quasi-local vibrations associated with the micro-clusters comprising TiO6 and TeO6 structural units and indirect dipole-dipole interactions of off-center B-cations (Ti4+ and Te4+) in double perovskite lattice. An organic supramolecular ternary salt (gallic acid:isoniazid:water; GINZH) examined earlier for its proton conducting characteristics is observed to display step-like dielectric behavior across the structural phase transition mediated by loss of water of hydration at 389 K. The presence of hydration in the crystal lattice along with proton mobility between acid-base pairs controls the "ferroelectric like" behavior until the phase transition temperature. We studied the effect of Fe doping on structural, magnetic, and dielectric properties of hexagonal ErMnO3 system. For 50% doping of Fe on Mn site in ErMnO3 modulated its crystallographic structure from hexagonal to orthorhombic phase. Accompanied with the structural phase transition in ErMnO3, the magnetic properties are effectively modified. The Fe doped samples exhibit enhancement in antiferromagnetic ordering Néel temperature (TN) from 77K (ErMnO3) to 280K (ErFe0.5Mn0.5O3). The anomalies observed in the dielectric constant around TN in doped ErMnO3 samples indicate the coupling between electric and magnetic order parameters. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

CaCu3Ti4O12 (CCTO) was synthesized and sintered by microwave processing at 2⋅45 GHz, 1⋅1 kW. The optimum calcination temperature using microwave heating was determined to be 950°C for 20 min to obtain cubic CCTO powders. The microwave processed powders were sintered to 94% density at 1000°C/60 min. The microstructural studies carried out on these ceramics revealed the grain size to be in the range 1-7 µm. The dielectric constants for the microwave sintered (1000°C/60 min) ceramics were found to vary from 11000-7700 in the 100 Hz-100 kHz frequency range. Interestingly the dielectric loss had lower values than those sintered by conventional sintering routes and decreases with increase in frequency. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Four new noncentrosymmetric tellurites of quaternary A/M/Te/O (A = Ba, Sr, Ca; M = V, Nb, Ta) system, namely, BaTa 4 Te 3 O 17 ( 1 ), BaNb 4 Te 3 O 17 ( 2 ), SrTa 4 Te 3 O 17 ( 3 ), and CaV 2 TeO 8 ( 4 ), were synthesized and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, thermal analysis, diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, and powder second harmonic generation (SHG) response measurements. The isostructural compounds 1-3 crystallize in the P 2 1 2 1 2 1 space group and have a three-dimensional (Ta 4 Te 3 O 17 ) 2- /(Nb 4 Te 3 O 17 ) 2- anionic framework, whereas the layered compound 4 crystallizes in the Ccc 2 space group and has a [V 2 TeO 8 ] 2- anionic layer. The phase-matching compounds 1 , 2, and 3 and the non-phase-matching compound 4 show powder SHG responses equivalent to ∼27, ∼13, ∼24, and ∼68% of that of LiNbO 3 , respectively.

Polymer (poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF)) nanocrystal composites based on lanthanum nickelate (percolative oxide) and barium titanate were fabricated to obtain material systems with a high dielectric constant and low loss to be used for high-charge-storage applications. Lanthanum nickelate (LaNiO 3 ) nanocrystallites were synthesized from a simple citrate-assisted sol-gel route that yielded agglomerated crystallites of an average size of 120 nm. The defective nature of the lanthanum nickelate nanocrystals was revealed by the transmission electron microscopy studies. Hot-pressing method was executed to fabricate the LaNiO 3 /PVDF nanocrystal composites, and their dielectric characteristics showed a low percolation threshold in the region of f LN (volume fraction of lanthanum nickelate) = 0.10. The percolative conductive filler-polymer nanocrystal composite at the percolation threshold exhibited a dielectric constant (ε r ) and loss ( D) of 55 and 0.263, respectively, at 10 kHz; the dielectric constant obtained was more than 5 times that of host matrix PVDF. To further improve upon the obtained dielectric properties from the two-phase composites, a high-dielectric-constant material, barium titanate (BaTiO 3 ) nanocrystals, with an average size of 100 nm, was embedded in the polymer matrix as the third phase. The dielectric properties of the three-phase nanocrystal composites were measured as a function of the volume fraction of lanthanum nickelate (which was limited within the percolation threshold), and a dielectric constant as high as 90 and the associated loss of 0.13 at 10 kHz were achieved from f LN = 0.09 and f BT = 0.20. The obtained dielectric constant from this system is 9 times more than that of PVDF and 3 times that of a two-phase barium titanate/PVDF composite, which proves to be a promising material for charge-storage applications.

Five isomorphous AM 2 V 2 O 11 vanadates of niobium and tantalum, namely, BaNb 2 V 2 O 11 , BaTa 2 V 2 O 11 , SrNb 2 V 2 O 11 , SrTa 2 V 2 O 11 , and PbTa 2 V 2 O 11 , were prepared by solid-state reactions and structurally characterized by single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction techniques. Barium and strontium compounds, respectively, have centrosymmetric and noncentrosymmetric types of layered structure, wherein [M 2 V 2 O 11 ] 2- anionic layers are interleaved with A 2+ cations. Both types of layered structure are found for lead compound. The strontium and lead compounds are type I phase-matching materials with second-harmonic-generating efficiencies of 33-50% of LiNbO 3 , and their dielectric properties were evaluated. A three-dimensional structural variant was also identified for strontium compounds, which crystallize in noncentrosymmetric orthorhombic space group C222 1 .

Optically clear glasses of various compositions in the system (100-x)(Li₂B₄O₇)·x(Ba₅Li₂Ti₂Nb₈O₃₀) (5 ≤ x ≤ 20, in molar ratio) were fabricated by splat quenching technique. Controlled heat-treatment of the as-quenched glasses at 500 °C for 8 h yielded nanocrystallites embedded in the glass matrix. High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (HRTEM) of these samples established the composition of the nano-crystallites to be that of Ba₅Li₂Ti₂Nb₈O₃₀. ¹¹B NMR studies revealed the transformation of BO₄ structural units into BO₃ units owing to the increase in TiO₆ and NbO₆ structural units as the composition of Ba₅Li₂Ti₂Nb₈O₃₀ increased in the glass. This, in turn, resulted in an increase in the density of the glasses. The influence of the nominal composition of the glasses and glass nanocrystal composites on optical band gap (E(opt)), Urbach energy (ΔE), refractive index (n), molar refraction (R(m)), optical polarizability (α(m)) and third order non-linear optical susceptibility (χ³) were studied.

Transparent glasses in the system (100 - x)Li2B4O7 - x(BaO-Bi2O3-Nb2O5) (x = 10, 20, and 30) were fabricated via the conventional melt-quenching technique. The amorphous and glassy characteristics of the as-quenched samples were established by the differential thermal analyses (DTA) and X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) studies. Glass-nanocrystal composites (GNCs) i.e., the glasses embedded with BaBi2Nb2O9 (BBN) nanocrystals (10-50 nm) were produced by heat-treating the as-quenched glasses at temperatures higher than 500 degrees C. Perovskite BBN phase formation through an intermediate fluorite-like phase in the glass matrix was confirmed via XRD and transmission electron microscopic (TEM) studies. The optical transmission properties of these GNCs were found to have a strong compositional (BBN content) dependence. The refractive index (n = 1.90) and optical polarizability (alphao = 15.3 x 10(-24) cm3) of the GNC (x = 30) were larger than those of as-quenched glasses. The temperature dependent dielectric constant (epsilonr) and loss factor (D) for the glasses and GNCs were determined in the 100-40 MHz frequency range. The epsilonr was found to increase with increase in heat-treatment temperatures, while the loss of the glass-nanocomposites was less than that of as-quenched glasses. The sample heat-treated at 620 degrees C/1 h (x = 30) exhibited relaxor behavior associated with a dielectric anomaly in the 150-250 degrees C temperature range. The frequency dependence of the dielectric maximum temperature was found to obey the Vogel-Fulcher relation (Ea = 0.32 eV and Tf = 201 K).
