A new microwave metamaterial microstrip line (meta-MSL) is studied by integrating planar mushroom metamaterial structures into a conventional MSL. The meta-MSL is featured with an enhanced effective refractive index than the conventional, extracted from numerical demonstrations using the S-parameter method. The extraordinarily increased refractive index is found to be associated with weak dispersion and low dissipation loss, making the meta-MSL particularly beneficial to compact a microwave Wilkinson power divider (WPD). One metamaterial WPD (meta-WPD) is built using new meta-MSLs. Full-wave numerical calculations reveal that the new meta-WPD has low insertion losses, low reflections, and high isolations between the output ports, working as a good substitute for the conventional WPD. However, the new meta-WPD is exceptional in its small size, which is particularly useful in mobile and wireless applications where compact microwave components are in critical demand. The ice surface is known for presenting a very small kinetic friction coefficient, but the origin of this property remains highly controversial to date. In this work, we revisit recent computer simulations of ice sliding on atomically smooth substrates, using newly calculated bulk viscosities for the TIP4P/ice water model. The results show that spontaneously formed premelting films in static conditions exhibit an effective viscosity that is about twice the bulk viscosity. However, upon approaching sliding speeds in the order of m/s, the shear rate becomes very large, and the viscosities decrease by several orders of magnitude. This shows that premelting films can act as an efficient lubrication layer despite their small thickness and illustrates an interesting interplay between confinement enhanced viscosities and shear thinning. Our results suggest that the strongly thinned viscosities that operate under the high speed skating regime could largely reduce the amount of frictional heating. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Sensitivity in polymer-bonded explosives (PBXs) relies on the presence of defects, such as cracks and voids, which create localized thermal energy, commonly known as hotspots, and initiate reactions through various localization phenomena. Our prior research has explored the use of internal gas pressure induced by thermite ignition to generate localized defects for PBX sensitization. However, further research is required to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the defect generation process resulting from internal gas pressure. This study investigates the process of defect generation in PBXs in response to internally induced gas pressure by applying controlled compressed gas to a fabricated cavity within the materials, simulating the gas pressure emitting from thermite. X-ray micro-computed tomography was employed to visualize the microstructure of the sample before and after gas injection. The experiments reveal the significance of gas pressure, cavity shape, temperature, and specimen compaction pressure in the defect generation. Numerical simulations using Abaqus/Standard were conducted to assess the defect generation in mock PBXs under varying gas pressures, cohesive properties, and binder thicknesses. The simulation results demonstrate the substantial influence of these properties on the ability to generate defects in mock PBXs. This study contributes to a better understanding of the factors influencing defect generation in mock PBXs. The present study aims to provide a deeper understanding of how different particle size distributions and degrees of powder compaction affect the densification process of porcelain stoneware tiles. For this purpose, three different batches underwent a laboratory simulation of the industrial tilemaking process, at growing grinding time or increasing forming pressure, with technological characterization of both unfired and fired products. Sintering behaviour was determined by hot-stage microscopy. Phase composition was determined by XRD-Rietveld allowing the estimation of the chemical composition and physical properties of the liquid phase. The results illustrate the impact of too fine (or too coarse) grain size on powder compaction, firing shrinkage, water absorption, efficiency of densification, sintering rate, stability at high temperature, and risk of anticipated overfiring (and similarly for too high or too low forming pressure). Simultaneous variation of particle size and forming pressure beyond usual standards induced changes in technological behaviour that in most cases compensate each other. Phase composition is moderately influenced by particle size and little by powder compaction. The vitreous phase mainly suffered from a decreasing degree of polymerization as the particle size became finer or the dry bulk density decreased. In case of insufficient grinding, too much residual feldspars caused improper composition and properties of the glassy phase, which resulted in lower efficiency of densification and slower sintering rate. Both the sintering kinetics and degree of densification depend on the timescale, i.e. the ratio of surface tension to viscosity (melt) and median particle size. Nevertheless, a low powder compaction can trigger a microstructural effect on sintering (improving both densification rate and efficiency) that may outweigh the timescale effect. In order to understand pore evolution in relation to sedimentary facies, a study has been conducted on the Chang 6 reservoir in Western Ordos Basin. Tight reservoir space comprises primary intergranular pores with an average original porosity is 36.29%, and secondary pores related to feldspar dissolution. Reservoir porosity is 8.03–11.43% and permeability is 0.12 × 10−3–1.31 × 10−3 μm2. Cementation and mechanical compaction are the main reasons for the quality of the reservoir. Dissolution of feldspar grains improved the reservoir quality. The reservoir has undergone four evolutionary stages: ① Syn-sedimentary compaction which decreased the porosity by 21.27%, to an average remaining porosity was 15.12%. ② Early diagenetic cementation which decreased the porosity by 6.23% to an average residual porosity was 8.89%. ③ Early stage of mesodiagenesis: involving dissolution and formation of micro-fractures that led to an increase in porosity by 5.47% resulting in an average porosity of 14.36%. ④ Compaction and cementation during the late mesodiagenetic stage resulting in an average porosity of 10.87%. Quantitative calculations reveal an average reservoir porosity is 10.68% with an error of 1.75%. An integrated Equation of State (EOS) and strength/pore‐crush/damage model framework is provided for modeling near to source (near‐field) ground‐shock response, where large deformations and pressures necessitate coupling EOS with pressure‐dependent plastic yield and damage. Nonlinear pressure‐dependence of strength up to high‐pressures is combined with a Modified Cam‐Clay‐like cap‐plasticity model in a way to allow degradation of strength from pore‐crush damage, what we call the "Yp‐Cap" model. Nonlinear hardening under compaction allows modeling the crush‐out of pores in combination with a fully saturated EOS, that is, for modeling partially saturated ground‐shock response, where air‐filled voids crush. Attention is given to algorithmic clarity and efficiency of the provided model, and the model is employed in example numerical simulations, including finite element simulations of underground explosions to exemplify its robustness and utility. I formulate and criticise a condition that captures some recent ideas on the nature of pretence, namely, the disbelief condition. According to an initial understanding of this condition, an agent who is pretending that P must also disbelieve that P. I criticise this idea by proposing a counterexample showing that an agent may be in a state of pretence that does not imply disbelief in what is pretended. Verb production impairments in aphasia have important implications for sentence production and communication in general. Verbs with low concreteness may be especially important for certain functional uses, and yet limited data regarding their response to treatment are available. This study was designed to examine a novel behavioral treatment approach to improve low concreteness verb naming in persons with aphasia. Three persons with nonfluent aphasia participated in a single-subject experimental design research study examining the feasibility of the novel treatment. The treatment was based on approaches that target the verb as the central node of meaning during sentence construction. The primary outcome measure was a sentence completion probe. Effects on untreated stimuli and on general language and naming assessments were also examined. Results indicated some limited changes associated with the treatment for two of the participants. Treatment performance data suggested possible improvements in verb processing that were not reflected in the primary outcome measure. Modest decreases in aphasia severity were noted for two of the participants. The findings provide further support for targeting verbal production of verbs with low concreteness in aphasia. The main goal of this study is to investigate the strength and compaction characteristics of soil stabilized by fly ash with multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) as an additive. The materials used in the study were characterized using microscopic techniques like scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM–EDS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The soil in the current study was replaced up to 50% by fly ash in the presence of MWCNT and sodium hexametaphosphate (SHMP) in different concentrations. The findings demonstrate that the Atterberg limits and specific gravity decrease with the increase in fly ash, MWCNT, and, SHMP. The maximum (46%) and minimum (24.2%) values of the liquid limit were recorded at 0% and 50% fly ash content, respectively. The maximum (34%) and minimum (20.2%) values of the plastic limit were observed at 0% and 50% fly ash content respectively. The specific gravity of natural soil decreases from the maximum value of 2.68 to the minimum value of 2.53 at 0% and 50% fly ash content, respectively. The optimum moisture content also decreases with the increase in fly ash, MWCNT, SHMP, and vice versa for maximum dry density. 0.01% w/w MWCNT + 80% Soil + 20% Fly Ash + 2% SHMP is the optimal mix. It gives maximum unconfined compressive strength (UCS) value in all the durations of curing, i.e. 0.50, 0.725, and 0.984 MPa at 1, 7, and 28 days of curing, respectively. The UCS value of this combination is 147% more than the UCS value of normal soil cured for 28 days. SiC reinforced Al (SiC/Al) composites have outstanding advantages in different fields including aerospace. However, the current mechanical and chemical properties of Al–SiC composites are still not up to expectations because of the problems such as wettability, interface reaction, sintering time and SiC size and distribution. Microwave rapid sintering has a promising prospect for the preparation of high performance Al–SiC, however, the lack of process observation leads to the unclear relationship of energy, microstructure and material properties. Therefore microwave rapid sintering of Al–SiC has not been fully explored and applied. In the present paper, the whole process of Al–SiC microstructure evolution was observed accurately by in situ SR-CT experiment during microwave rapid sintering process. Based on the joint analysis of energy-structure-performance, it was found that the spherical SiC located at the neck of Al particles in the microwave field effectively increased the diffusion rate of Al–SiC samples, which inhibited the growth of grains and the densification process was basically completed in a short time. It was revealed that a region with high electric field strength and uniform distribution formed due to SiC with different structural characteristics, thus achieved the rapid densification of the Al–SiC in microwave sintering. The formation and regulation mechanism of rapid densification of Al–SiC during microwave rapid sintering were researched by the relationship between energy-structure and performance, which would provid more understanding for the preparation of high-performance Al–SiC based on microwave rapid sintering technology, and provide the possibility for the preparation of more functional materials. Social justice is listed as a professional value for the American Counseling Association (ACA) (2014), yet professional publication in this topic may not be commensurate with its importance to the profession. This article presents the results of a qualitative content analysis (QCA, Schreier, 2012) of titles and abstracts of 917 articles in 18 ACA journals and one American School Counselor Association journal to document each journal's publication rate of social justice‐related articles for 2 years: 2018 (2 years before the ACA Anti‐Racism Statement, 2020) and 2022 (2 years after the statement). Results for each journal are presented, and topics of social justice content are listed. Implications are provided for researchers, association leaders, editors, and reviewers. The purpose of this study was to develop an in vitro release testing (IVRT) strategy to predict the pre-clinical performance of single agent and combination long acting injectable (LAI) suspension products. Two accelerated IVRT methods were developed using USP apparatus 2 to characterize initial, intermediate, and terminal phases of drug release. Initial and intermediate phases were captured using a suspension cup with moderate agitation to ensure a constant, low surface area exposure of the LAI suspension to the release media. The terminal phase was obtained by exposing the LAI suspension to a high initial paddle speed. This resulted in smaller suspension particulates with high cumulative surface area that were dispersed throughout the release media, enabling rapid drug release. The in vitro release profiles obtained with these two methods in 48 h or less were independently time scaled to reflect the in vivo time scale of approximately 1800 h. Level-A in vitro in vivo correlations (IVIVCs) were separately developed for each method and active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) using in vivo absorption profiles obtained by deconvolution of rat plasma concentration-time profiles. The IVIVCs were successfully validated for each API. This work provides a framework for evaluating individual phases of drug release of complex LAIs to ultimately predict their in vivo performance. Reinforcement of soils with fibers generally increases the mechanical properties of the fiber-reinforced soil (FRS) system. However, published literature is limited to investigating the undrained response of clay and synthetic fibers, with few studies targeting natural clay and natural fibers under drained conditions. There is a need to study the response of fiber-reinforced clay systems under drained conditions to assess long-term stability. This paper investigated the drained shear strength and durability of clays reinforced with natural hemp fibers using isotropically consolidated drained triaxial tests, in which the fiber content, confining pressure, and compaction water content were varied. Results showed that the incorporation of hemp fibers improved the deviatoric stress at failure by up to 60%, which increased the drained cohesion and friction angle of the FRS by 7–10 kPa and 3–7°, respectively. The increase in cohesive intercept was not affected by the compaction water content, while the increase in friction angle was pronounced in specimens compacted at optimum water content (w = 18%). Durability tests showed that the improvement in strength due to hemp fibers diminishes after 3 weeks of curing prior to drained testing, indicating the dramatic negative impact of degradation of natural fibers on the mechanical performance of fiber-reinforced clay and the need for industrial treatment of the fiber. To design and operate various equipment of the solids control system in offshore drilling platforms, it is important to establish how the moisture content influences the characteristics of drilled cuttings to form packed beds and flow over solid surfaces. The current study comprehensively analyzes how moisture content, primarily composed of water and representing waterbased muds (WBMs), influences the bed packing properties and drilled cuttings' flowability. The particle aggregation/disaggregation dynamics, loose and tapped bulk densities and porosities, compaction dynamics of packed beds, Hausner ratio, and angle of repose of drilled cuttings with ten distinct moisture contents (1.4--44.0 wt%) were analyzed. It was noticed that the increment of moisture content up to 15.2% promoted the formation of looser interparticle structures. However, these structures were steadier, showing greater difficulty flowing and releasing air/liquid. The continuous increment of moisture content beyond 15.2% promoted a complete change in the material behavior. The interparticle structures became denser. The material could flow and release air/liquid more easily. In addition, it was possible to establish a classification of the different behaviors of drilled cuttings according to the moisture content. Skid trails are a major management‐induced disturbance in temperate forest ecosystems with considerable impact on soil ecological processes that are so far poorly understood. In German forests, skid trails comprise 10%–20% of the forest area that is potentially affected by soil compaction through heavy machinery. We systematically investigated the influence of skid trails on physical, chemical and microbiological soil parameters at 84 paired plots across four Central European forest types. In low mountain forests with steeper topography, skid trails had more drastic effects than in lowland forests. Skid trails in low mountain areas showed a decrease in the C to N ratio of microbial biomass (MBC/MBN), as well as increased microbial (MBC/SOC) and enzyme activities leading to faster carbon turnover (lower C/N, EOC/EN) and increased CO2 losses (CO2/SOC) from the soil. The overall effects of the skid trails in lowland forests were small. On base‐poor soils, we found an increase in the MBC/MBN ratio, while skid trails in base‐rich lowland soils showed a reduction in CO2/SOC, suggesting a proportional increase in soil carbon storage. Regardless of region‐specific effects, the relative increase in the bulk density of the fine soil was identified as a ‘golden trait’ that determined the effects of skid trails on many soil parameters, as shown by negative correlations with SOC, N, MBC, MBN, MBP, MBC/SOC and CO2/SOC and positive ones with the activities of certain hydrolytic enzymes. Synthesis and applications: Our data clearly showed that carbon conversion processes and soil respiration leading to significant carbon and nutrient losses increased significantly on skid trails in low mountain regions with relatively steep slopes, which was in sharp contrast to lowland sites. The strong context dependence of our findings suggests that the mapping of soil conditions in terms of slope, substrate and moisture with high spatial resolution is mandatory to assess the vulnerability of sites to soil compaction by heavy machinery. Based on such vulnerability analysis, negative impacts can be minimised through the designation of permanently fixed skid trails, technical adaptation of vehicles (e.g. wide base tyres) as well as careful planning and timing of management operations that should be restricted to dry weather and soil moisture conditions or periods of frost. Long‐acting injectable (LAI) cabotegravir and rilpivirine for HIV treatment and LAI cabotegravir for pre‐exposure HIV prophylaxis are being rolled out in a multitude of countries worldwide. Due to the prolonged exposure, it can be challenging to undertake ‘traditional’ pharmacokinetic studies and current guidance is derived from their oral equivalents or physiologically based pharmacokinetic studies. This review aims to consider pharmacokinetic characteristics of cabotegravir and rilpivirine and describe anticipated drug–drug interactions (DDIs) with frequent concomitant medications in African settings. Relevant co‐medications were identified from the WHO 2021 List of Essential Medicines. All original human and physiologically based pharmacokinetic studies published in English on PubMed, discussing DDIs with LAI cabotegravir and rilpivirine prior to April 2023, were reviewed. The Liverpool HIV interaction database was also reviewed (https://www.hiv-druginteractions.org/checker). LAI cabotegravir and rilpivirine have half‐lives of 6–12 and 13–28 weeks, respectively. Cabotegravir is primarily metabolized by UDP‐glucuronyltransferase (UGT)‐1A1 and rilpivirine by cytochrome P450 (CYP)‐3A4. LAI cabotegravir and rilpivirine themselves exhibit low risk of perpetrating interactions with co‐medications as they do not induce or inhibit the major drug metabolizing enzymes. However, they are victims of DDIs relating to the induction of their metabolizing enzymes by concomitantly administered medication. Noteworthy contraindicated co‐medications include rifamycins, carbamazepine, phenytoin, flucloxacillin and griseofulvin, which induce CYP3A4 and/or UGT1A1, causing clinically significant reduced concentrations of rilpivirine and/or cabotegravir. In addition to virologic failure, subtherapeutic concentrations resulting from DDIs can lead to emergent drug resistance. Clinicians should be aware of potential DDIs and counsel people receiving LAI cabotegravir/rilpivirine appropriately to minimize risk. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

All solid‐state batteries are desirable for a range of energy storage applications which require high energy density. Achieving a high energy density in a solid‐state battery requires the operation of an energy dense anode with a composite solid‐state cathode. Pores and/or voids within a solid state cathode are ion‐blocking and thus control over the concentration and distribution of pores in the initial electrode and cycled electrode is desirable. This study provides an understanding of the interplay between electrode microstructure and mechanics on active material utilization in solid state cathodes composed of NCM 811 and Li6PS5Cl. Decreasing the solid electrolyte particle size leads to greater active material‐electrolyte contact and less total deformation when exposed to an external load. Composite cathodes with greater compliance can potentially decrease strain between the active material and solid electrolyte, decrease delamination events and result in higher overall active material utilization and high capacity retention. The long‐acting sustained‐release of active molecules is of great importance in chemical production, food preservative, drug delivery in vivo, and so on. However, the problems of initial‐burst release and short release time (dominated by Fick's lows) commonly exist in sustained‐release materials. Herein, we designed and fabricated two types of film materials to achieve slow, continuous, and long‐term release of small molecules using methyl orange (MO) as a target release substance. B‐MO@polymer films were obtained by embedding MO into polylactic acid/polyethylene glycol (PLA/PEG) substrate and then assembling a layered double hydroxide (LDH)/carboxymethyl chitosan (CMC) barrier layer on the substrate surface. Another type of film (LDH&MO@polymer) was prepared by blending LDH and MO into the PLA/PEG polymer matrix. These films show high loading capacities of ~500 μg/cm2 for MO and display long‐acting sustained‐release property arising from the barrier effect of LDH nano‐brick. Specifically, for the B‐MO@polymer film, the release time of 50% MO is 10 days and the release time of 80% MO can be extended to 30 days. Ultimately, the time for complete release (>96%) reaches over 60 days. By using LDH‐embedded polymer as carriers for active molecules, the zero‐order release of MO was realized for LDH&MO@polymer films, achieving sustained release within as long as 145 days. This work provides a new paradigm to achieve the long‐acting sustained‐release of active molecules through the barrier effect of 2D nano‐bricks. This study aims to clarify what are the short-term effects of customer incivility on targeted employees’ self-esteem and job satisfaction. We hypothesised that daily customer incivility reported at the end of the previous workday would predict decreases in next-day morning employees’ self-esteem. In turn, lowered self-esteem would be related to lower job satisfaction levels at the end of the same workday. Additionally, we predicted that the link between lowered self-esteem and lowered job satisfaction would be weaker for employees who engaged more in deep acting. To test our hypotheses, we conducted a daily study on 144 customer-contact employees. Participants completed online questionnaires for 31 days reporting their morning self-esteem levels, together with evening customer incivility and job satisfaction levels. The data were analysed using dynamic structural equation models that allow examining intra-person time series trends, on a day-to-day level, while estimating individual differences therein. Consistent with our predictions, the results provided evidence for the short-term detrimental effects of customer incivility on next-day job satisfaction through lowered self-esteem and for the buffering role of deep acting. In the manufacturing of fiber‐reinforced composite materials, the preforming stage of dry fiber fabric entails compaction operations carried out under constant pressure, a specific preforming temperature, and in‐plane tension. Throughout this process, permanent deformation and creep/recovery behavior are observed in the fabric, correlating with factors such as time, sustained pressure, temperature, and in‐plane tension. Effective control of fiber volume fraction and material composition necessitates a thorough comprehension of these phenomena as well as the capacity to predict them with accuracy. To solve this, a viscoelastic‐plastic model was put forth, which provides an account of the viscous effects on the fabric during its stages of compression and recovery. The proposed model incorporates changed Burgers units to manage time‐dependent deformations and plastic units to address permanent deformations. Through the application of a single set of parameters, the model precisely and comprehensively characterizes through‐thickness creep/recovery behavior of preformed dry fiber fabrics under varying conditions, including creep stress, temperature, and in‐plane tension. To enhance the practical utility of the model, an application has been developed and validated against experimental data conducted under diverse test conditions. The results demonstrate consistency between experimental curves and model‐predicted curves across various compression scenarios. At-rest lateral earth pressure is one of the major sources of disturbing force on retaining structures and provides resisting force for anchors and piles. A theoretical model is proposed, and experimentally validated, for the normally and overconsolidated at-rest lateral earth pressure coefficients in silica sand. In addition, the experiment illustrates a procedure to determine the maximum historic vertical stress equivalent to the standard and modified Proctor energies of compaction. The previous equivalent maximum historic vertical stress, which is found to be constant for the relative density reached by each energy of compaction, is then proposed as a parameter to determine the overconsolidation ratio within the backfill and its resultant at-rest lateral earth pressure distribution behind a vertical wall. The at-rest lateral earth pressure distribution incorporated with the overconsolidation ratio naturally results in a greater magnitude and is curved in contrast to the linear distribution characteristic of a normally consolidated state. The compaction of asphalt pavement is a crucial step to ensure its service life. Although intelligent compaction technology can monitor compaction quality in real time, its application to individual asphalt surface courses still faces limitations. Therefore, it is necessary to study the compaction mechanism of asphalt pavements from the particle level to optimize intelligent compaction technology. This study constructed an asphalt pavement compaction model using the Discrete Element Method (DEM). First, the changes in pavement smoothness during the compaction process were analyzed. Second, the changes in the angular velocity of the mixture and the triaxial angular velocity (TAV) of the mortar, aggregates, and mixture during vibratory compaction were examined. Finally, the correlations between the TAV amplitude and the coordination number (CN) amplitude with the compaction degree of the mixture were investigated. This study found that vibratory compaction can significantly reduce asymmetric wave deformation, improving pavement smoothness. The mixture primarily rotates in the vertical plane during the first six passes of vibratory compaction and within the horizontal plane during the seventh pass. Additionally, TAV reveals the three-dimensional dynamic rotation characteristics of the particles, and the linear relationship between its amplitude and the pavement compaction degree aids in controlling the compaction quality of asphalt pavements. Finally, the linear relationship between CN amplitude and pavement compaction degree can predict the stability of the aggregate structure. When dealing with processes involving the compaction of bulk materials, very often the quality of the product is determined based on density measurements. Methods used in the industry do not produce compacted materials with high degrees of homogeneity. As a result, the quality of the resulting product, interpreted as its density, varies over the cross-section of the product. In this article, the authors present the results of a numerical study involving the analysis of the density distribution of compacted dry ice during the reciprocating process. The Drucker–Prager/cap model was used in this study, which allowed the change in mechanical properties of the compacted material to be taken into account during the simulation of the process. The diameter, height and density of the cylindrical specimens used in the numerical tests were taken as the variable parameters. The static compaction technique emphasizes the reduced activator dosage required to develop geopolymers. Therefore, it is crucial to comprehend the optimal alkaline activator concentration for blending low-calcium precursor (fly ash) with high-calcium precursor (GGBS) to produce geopolymer blocks. This work was designed to optimize structural blocks' compressive strength and durability. In experimentation, fly ash (FA) and slag (GGBS) proportions were initially investigated under NaOH solution with varying molarity (8–12) and curing conditions to develop a load-bearing structural block. Subsequently, the durability of the optimized block was evaluated over 56 days through subjection to sulfate and acidic solutions, with efflorescence monitored over the same period. The results reveal that the structural block comprised of 100% FA exhibits the highest compressive strength and lowest bulk density. Conversely, the block incorporating 25% slag that underwent hot curing demonstrates a remarkable 305% strength increase compared to ambient curing. Considering the physico-mechanical performance, the 100% FA block was chosen for durability investigation. The findings indicate a substantial strength loss exceeding 40% after exposure to sulfate and acidic environments over 56 days, coupled with pronounced efflorescence. Catastrophic failure occurs in all cases due to significant strength deterioration. The FTIR spectrum revealed the shifting of the wavenumber to a higher value and verified the depolymerization and leaching of alumina under acidic exposure. However, the developed geopolymer blocks demonstrate superior sustainability and feasibility compared to conventional fired clay bricks and cement-based FA bricks. That the highly trabeculated ventricular walls of the developing embryos transform to the arrangement during the fetal stages, when the mural architecture is dominated by the thickness of the compact myocardium, has been explained by the coalescence of trabeculations, often erroneously described as 'compaction'. Recent data, however, support differential rates of growth of the trabecular and compact layers as the major driver of change. Here, these processes were assessed quantitatively and visualized in standardized views. We used a larger dataset than has previously been available of mouse hearts, covering the period from embryonic day 10.5 to postnatal day 3, supported by images from human hearts. The volume of the trabecular layer increased throughout development, in contrast to what would be expected had there been 'compaction'. During the transition from embryonic to fetal life, the rapid growth of the compact layer diminished the proportion of trabeculations. Similarly, great expansion of the central cavity reduced the proportion of the total cavity made up of intertrabecular recesses. Illustrations of the hearts with the median value of left ventricular trabeculation confirm a pronounced growth of the compact wall, with prominence of the central cavity. This corresponds, in morphological terms, to a reduction in the extent of the trabecular layer. Similar observations were made in the human hearts. We conclude that it is a period of comparatively slow growth of the trabecular layer, rather than so‐called compaction, that is the major determinant of the changing morphology of the ventricular walls of both mouse and human hearts. This paper focuses on the 'blind spots in IPE' recently addressed in related Special Issues of Review of International Political Economy and New Political Economy. It identifies a blind spot of law in IPE, tracing the problem to a blind spot in the discipline of international relations (IR) generated by tendencies in dominant theories to consider international law to be super-structural, epiphenomenal, and not worthy of political analysis, and to associations of international law with idealism. The analysis notes an inverse blind spot in international law (IL), wherein legal scholars tend to regard IL as autonomous of politics and the political economy of 'who gets what, when, how'. These blind spots contribute to the neglect of how legal forms function to mystify the political economy of IL, thereby advancing transnational capitalism and inequality. The empirical focus is on transnational contract law, dispute settlement, and value and production chain contracting. These laws function as Capital's law and central pillars of the transnational politico-legal order by reaching deep inside states to restructure domestic spheres according to new constitutionalism and the demands of transnational capital. Drawing on critical political economy, the paper develops a historical materialist analysis to denaturalize and demystify Capital's law. Metals like iron, zinc and magnesium are gaining the attention of researchers in the field of biomedical implants owing to their good mechanical and biodegradable properties. However, there are various problems associated with each of these materials like very fast or very slow degradation rate, stress shielding, poor mechanical properties, etc. These problems could be resolved by fabricating composite and functional biomaterials, combining the advantages of two or more materials into single biomaterial. However, till date no process has been developed to fabricate topologically ordered and functionally graded composite biodegradable implants. The present work focuses on the development of a novel approach utilizing 3D printing, pressureless microwave sintering and casting to fabricate topologically ordered and functionally graded composite biodegradable implants. Four different kinds of composite biomaterials were fabricated by combining iron, hydroxyapatite and zinc with density and porosity varying in range of 1.95–5.36 g/cm3 and 28.37–73.99%, respectively. Dimensional deviation in fabricated samples as compared to designed dimensions was found to be in range of 10.33–18.44%. Compression tests were performed for all fabricated samples, and compressive strength and modulus of elasticity were found to vary from 17.62 to 102.32 MPa and 186.12 to 2452.20 MPa, respectively. The corrosion analysis of fabricated samples was done to evaluate the degradation behaviour in simulated body fluid. The degradation rate was found to be varying in range of 1.68–4.33 mm/year. (Ca, Ta) co-doped TiO 2 ceramics were successfully prepared using flash sintering technology, and the effects of oxygen vacancies on the rapid densification and giant dielectric properties were studied. The results suggest that the maximum volume fraction of oxygen vacancies in flash-sintered samples is approximately 10%. Oxygen vacancies decrease the barrier energy level of atomic diffusion and provide convenient diffusion channels, resulting in rapid densification of the sample within 24 min at 1100 °C. All flash-sintered samples exhibit high relative density, exceeding 95%. Oxygen vacancies promote the electron-pinning defect dipole effect at low temperatures. As the temperature increases, carriers such as oxygen vacancies move to the grain boundary, forming an internal barrier layer capacitance effect. The optical dielectric constant reaches 7.25 × 104, and the dielectric loss drops to 0.09. Drug-Combination Nanoparticles (DcNP) are a novel drug delivery system designed for synchronized delivery of multiple drugs in a single, long-acting, and targeted dose. Unlike depot formulations, slowly releasing drug at the injection site into the blood, DcNP allows multiple-drug-in-combination to collectively distribute from the injection site into the lymphatic system. Two distinct classes of long-acting injectables products are proposed based on pharmacokinetic mechanisms. Class I involves sustained release at the injection site. Class II involves a drug-carrier complex composed of lopinavir, ritonavir, and tenofovir uptake and retention in the lymphatic system before systemic access as a part of the PBPK model validation. For clinical development, Class II long-acting drug-combination products, we leverage data from 3 nonhuman primate studies consisting of nine PK datasets: Study 1, varying fixed-dose ratios; Study 2, short multiple dosing with kinetic tails; Study 3, long multiple dosing (chronic). PBPK validation criteria were established to validate each scenario for all drugs. The models passed validation in 8 of 9 cases, specifically to predict Study 1 and 2, including PK tails, with ritonavir and tenofovir, fully passing Study 3 as well. PBPK model for lopinavir in Study 3 did not pass the validation due to an observable time-varying and delayed drug accumulation, which likely was due to ritonavir's CYP3A inhibitory effect building up during multiple dosing that triggered a mechanism-based drug-drug interaction (DDI). Oxidation of histone H3 at lysine 4 (H3K4ox) is catalyzed by lysyl oxidase homolog 2 (LOXL2). This histone modification is enriched in heterochromatin in triple‐negative breast cancer (TNBC) cells and has been linked to the maintenance of compacted chromatin. However, the molecular mechanism underlying this maintenance is still unknown. Here, we show that LOXL2 interacts with RuvB‐Like 1 (RUVBL1), RuvB‐Like 2 (RUVBL2), Actin‐like protein 6A (ACTL6A), and DNA methyltransferase 1associated protein 1 (DMAP1), a complex involved in the incorporation of the histone variant H2A.Z. Our experiments indicate that this interaction and the active form of RUVBL2 are required to maintain LOXL2‐dependent chromatin compaction. Genome‐wide experiments showed that H2A.Z, RUVBL2, and H3K4ox colocalize in heterochromatin regions. In the absence of LOXL2 or RUVBL2, global levels of the heterochromatin histone mark H3K9me3 were strongly reduced, and the ATAC‐seq signal in the H3K9me3 regions was increased. Finally, we observed that the interplay between these series of events is required to maintain H3K4ox‐enriched heterochromatin regions, which in turn is key for maintaining the oncogenic properties of the TNBC cell line tested (MDA‐MB‐231). Purpose: Before blastocyst development, embryos undergo morphological and metabolic changes crucial for their subsequent growth. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between morula compaction and blastocyst formation and the subsequent chromosomal status of the embryos. Methods: This retrospective cohort study evaluated embryo development (n = 371) using time-lapse imaging; 94 blastocysts underwent preimplantation genetic testing for aneuploidy (PGT-A). Results: The embryos were classified as fully (Group 1, n = 194) or partially (Group 2, n = 177) compacted. Group 1 had significantly higher proportions of good- and average-quality blastocysts than Group 2 (21.6% vs. 3.4%, p = 0.001; 47.9% vs. 26.6%, p = 0.001, respectively). The time from the morula stage to the beginning and completion of compaction and blastocyst formation was significantly shorter in Group 1 than in Group 2 (78.6 vs. 82.4 h, p = 0.001; 87.0 vs. 92.2 h, p = 0.001; 100.2 vs. 103.7 h, p = 0.017, respectively). Group 1 embryos had larger surface areas than Group 2 embryos at various time points following blastocyst formation. Group 1 blastocysts had significantly higher average expansion rates than Group 2 blastocysts (653.6 vs. 499.2 μm2/h, p = 0.001). PGT-A revealed a higher proportion of euploid embryos in Group 1 than in Group 2 (47.2% vs. 36.6%, p = 0.303). Conclusion: Time-lapse microscopy uncovered a positive relationship between compaction and blastocyst quality and its association with embryo ploidy. In this paper, we propose an approach solving the holes problem in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) based on Khalimsky k-Clustering and data routing protocol (MDKC). The aim of this solution is to establish optimized data routing paths between isolated nodes/clusters and the Sink in noisy environment with the presence of obstacles. This approach is an improvement of a previous work deploying stationary WSN not dealing with the problem of "holes". At first, the MDKC algorithm divides the WSN into k-hop (k ≥ 2) compact dynamic clusters. For each cluster, a node is elected cluster-head in its k-neighborhood according to some criteria such as the remaining energy, the k-degree and the communication probability average. Then, some nodes are selected as Khalimsky anchors to optimize the intra-cluster data routing process. The Khalimsky anchors at the border layers ensure the inter-cluster data routing between adjacent clusters. In the next phase of MDKC, Mobile Collectors (MCs) are used for data collecting and relaying from isolated nodes/clusters to the connected Khalimsky's nodes. The simulation results prove that MDKC minimizes the energy consumption and improves the connectivity rate between sensors and the delivery rate compared to some existing approaches. The behavior of iron (Fe) in clayey acquitards has a significant effect on the groundwater environment. However, the release processes and impact of Fe within clayey sediments during compaction remain unknown. Two groups of simulation experiments were carried out to demonstrate the migration and transformation mechanisms of Fe during clayey sediment compaction. Experiment A, which simulated a natural deposition condition, revealed that pressurization changed the reaction environment from oxidative to reductive by isolating oxygen. Oxidation of ferrous ions was followed by reduction dissolution of poorly crystalline Fe (III) and crystalline Fe (III) oxides. Under the microbial utilization of organic matter, the main transformation process of sediment Fe was the dissimilatory reduction of poorly crystalline Fe (III) oxides. The total Fe concentration in pore water was 0.09–11.61 mg/L, with ferrous ions predominating among the Fe species. The lower moisture content (< ~36%) in the later stage of compaction inhibited the dissimilatory reduction of Fe (III), and the formation of Fe (II) minerals resulted in a decrease in Fe concentration. Experiment B, which simulated an artificial compaction state, revealed that the sediment Fe was primarily released by physical dissolution because of changes in pore structure and solubility. The concentration of total Fe in pore water was 0.02–1.96 mg/L, with a significant increase in response to a rapid increase in pressure. According to the estimates in the Chen Lake wetland (eastern China), the contribution of clay pore water release accounted for 19.9–31.9% of the average Fe concentration in groundwater during natural deposition. Introduction: Dry eye can compromise corneal astigmatism measurement repeatability during preoperative cataract surgery examination. No previous studies have analyzed the effectiveness of long-acting 3% diquafosol sodium (LA-DQS) on astigmatism measurement repeatability. This research assessed the effect of LA-DQS on astigmatism measurement repeatability in preoperative patients with cataract and short tear break-up time (TBUT) type dry eyes in both eyes of the same patient. Correlations between repeatability and TBUT, corneal high-order aberrations (HOAs), and corneal astigmatism magnitude were also analyzed. Methods: In total, 122 eyes (61 patients) with short TBUT-type dry eye were enrolled. Preoperatively, only one eye of all patients was treated with LA-DQS for 4 weeks. TBUT and corneal HOAs were checked using CASIA 2 before and 4 weeks post-treatment. The cylindrical power and meridian of astigmatism were measured at 3- and 4-week post-treatment using IOLMaster 700. Power vectors J0 and J45 were used for astigmatism calculations. Repeatability of astigmatism measurements was assessed as the within-subject standard deviation (Sw). The relative effects of TBUT and HOAs on J0 Sw and J45 Sw were also analyzed. Comparative changes in these variables were evaluated between treated and non-treated eyes, with additional analysis of their correlations. Results: Treated eyes exhibited significant improvements in TBUT, HOAs, and post-treatment measurements of J0 Sw and J45 Sw at 3 and 4 weeks. In non-treated eyes, J0 Sw and J45 Sw showed significant correlation with TBUT and corneal HOAs. HOAs showed stronger relative associations with J0 Sw and J45 Sw than TBUT. In non-treated eyes, no significant correlation was found between cylindrical power and astigmatism measurement repeatability. Conclusions: In short TBUT-type dry eye, preoperative treatment with LA-DQS significantly improved astigmatism measurement repeatability. Clay formations present very favourable conditions for the long-term containment of radioactive waste due to their low hydraulic conductivity, high radionuclide retention capacity and limited fracturing in their natural state. But it is also due to the very low permeabilities of clays and claystone that drained conditions occur only at very slow temperature increases. The response is then partially drained or undrained with the consequence of thermal pressurisation induced by the thermal gradient. Furthermore, thermo-hydro-mechanical characterisations under drained and undrained conditions carried out on samples of the Callovo-Oxfordian (COx) clay formation and in situ experiments performed by Andra at the Meuse/Haute-Marne underground research laboratory (LS M/HM) have also highlighted the strongly coupled and complex thermo-hydro-mechanical processes of this material. In particular, the volume changes of the COx claystone, subjected to a temperature rise under a constant isotropic stress close to the in situ conditions of the LS M/HM laboratory in saturated and drained conditions, were highlighted. A behaviour comparable to that of over-consolidated clays depending on temperature is then experimentally observed, i.e. thermoelastic expansion followed by thermoplastic contraction: the transition temperature between these two volumetric deformation mechanisms would correspond to the maximum temperature value undergone by the COx claystone during its geological history. Based on the extensive literature on the thermomechanical behaviour of clays and clayey soils, recent thermo-hydro-mechanical tests conducted on COx samples, as well as the database on the instantaneous behaviour of COx claystone, a constitutive model for the thermomechanical behaviour of COx claystone is proposed, then implemented in a commercial computation code. The transverse isotropic elastic and then elastoplastic instantaneous behaviour (beyond the elastic limit) up to the peak strength of the COx claystone, thermoplastic and hydrostatic compactions are taken into account. The model is first validated on triaxial and hydrostatic paths. The simulation of one of the drained hydrostatic stress heating tests performed by Braun et al. verified that the proposed model was able to reproduce the thermal compaction phenomenon highlighted by the authors and to show its operational character. Highlights: As for over-consolidated clays, the volume changes of COx claystone subjected to temperature rise exhibit a thermoelastic expansion followed by thermoplastic compaction. The transition temperature between these two volumetric mechanisms would correspond to the maximum temperature undergone by the COx during its geological history. A thermo-elasto-plastic model is proposed by incorporating the observed non-linear behaviour of the COx claystone up to its strength, with the two volumetric strain mechanisms. This paper presents a comprehensive investigation of the swelling behaviour of a compacted bentonite–sand mixture subjected to hydration under constant volume conditions. Contrary to previous studies, the tested sample was isotropically compacted before being hydrated under constant volume conditions until full saturation was reached. The total axial pressure, total radial pressures at four different heights of the sample, and injected water volume were recorded over time. The experimental data reveal a complex and non-uniform evolution of the axial and radial stresses over time, as well as anisotropy of the total stresses, which persist at the saturated equilibrated state. To gain further insights, a numerical analysis was performed using an advanced hydromechanical framework for partially saturated porous media, accounting for the evolving microstructure of the material. The complex evolution of the total axial and radial pressures with time is attributed to the advancing hydration and swelling front in the sample, along with the development of irreversible strains. The good agreement between the numerical results and the experimental data enables validation of the developed framework. Implications for engineered barriers in deep geological disposal of radioactive waste are discussed. Highlights: The swelling behaviour of an isotropically compacted bentonite-based material under constant-volume conditions is investigated. Hydration of the sample generates stress heterogeneity and anisotropy, which persist at the saturated equilibrated state. To solve the problem where the prediction formula for vibration velocity by dynamic compaction cannot fully reflect the elevation amplification effect, the elevation amplification effect of vibration velocity by dynamic compaction was studied theoretically, and the factors that influence the elevation amplification effect of vibration velocity by dynamic compaction were systematically analyzed in this paper. The elevation amplification effect of a loess high slope under dynamic compaction is coformed by the refraction and reflection superposition effect of dynamic compaction vibration waves at the soil layer interface and the diffraction effect of dynamic compaction vibration waves. The propagation path of dynamic compaction vibration waves in soil was analyzed, and the elevation amplification effect was verified theoretically. The related physical quantities that affected the dynamic compaction vibration velocity of a loess high slope were analyzed based on the dimensional analysis method, and the calculation and improved calculation formulas that considered the elevation amplification effect of dynamic compaction vibration velocity were obtained. The multiple regression analysis of the calculation and improved calculation formula that considered the elevation amplification effect of the dynamic compaction vibration velocity was carried out using MATLAB with engineering examples. The results show that the relative error of the two formulas is small when the elevation difference is small; when the elevation difference is large, the calculation accuracy of the improved calculation formula that considered the elevation difference is higher, and it is more in line with the actual situation. Finally, according to the selected maximum allowable value of the slope particle velocity (e.g., 1.5, 2.0, and 2.5 cm/s), the allowable safe distance for dynamic compaction on a loess high slope is proposed area of northern Shaanxi Province, China. The results of this paper could provide a reliable basis for predicting vibration velocity by dynamic compaction in the Loess Plateau area of northern Shaanxi Province, China. They might have a reference value for dynamic compaction vibration control under similar terrain environments with large elevation differences and provide a safe guide for a dynamic compaction construction site in the Loess Plateau area of northern Shaanxi Province, China. Field test on the vibro replacement stone column installation and considerations on cavity expansion Vibro replacement stone columns are used for ground improvement worldwide in coarse‐grained as well as fine‐grained soils. However, the changes in the soil's state due to the stone column installation including the induced vibration have not yet been investigated sufficiently. In the first part of the article, the effects of the stone column installation are investigated using a field test. It is shown that the installation in coarse‐grained soils can lead to an improvement in the structural properties of the surrounding soil. Based on the field test, a theoretical comparison of different cavity expansion processes is presented in the second part of this paper using simplified numerical examples. For that purpose, the expansion of a cavity in the soil due to (1) a monotonic and (2) a cyclic loading is investigated using a hypoplastic constitutive model. Both cases are compared to investigate their ability to simulate the column installation process. However, a qualitatively different soil behaviour is observed: A monotonic expansion will result asymptotically in the critical state of the soil, while a cyclic expansion leads to a compaction and/or a stress relaxation depending on the permeability. The 3D printing of continuous carbon fiber–reinforced thermoplastics (c-CFRTP) results in fiber waviness and voids that limit mechanical performance. The effects of tensioning and compaction forces during 3D printing were experimentally studied to suppress fiber waviness. A tensioning force was generated along the filament to straighten the fibers by asynchronously controlling the filament feeding and print speeds. A compaction force was applied through the nozzle tip by setting the layer height to reduce the voids. Microscopic images of specimen cross-sections and surfaces indicated a reduction in fiber waviness and voids after these treatments, and three-point bending tests demonstrated improved mechanical properties. This combination of tensioning and compaction forces achieved 28% and 45% higher bending stiffness and strength, respectively. Asphalt mixture rutting may involve vertical compaction, volumetric dilation, and shear-induced lateral movement, depending on many factors. Both in the field and in the laboratory [e.g., Hamburg wheel tracker (HWT) and asphalt pavement analyzer (APA) tests], lateral movement of a mixture creates a heave region and a vertical permanent deformation along the wheel path. Typical laboratory wheel tracking tests such as HWT and APA measure the depth of pure vertical permanent deformation; field measurements measure rut depth and heave height. Currently, HWT and APA test devices are not equipped to measure heave height. The objective of this study was to develop an image-based heave height measurement methodology for HWT-tested asphalt specimens. The method can easily be extended to other wheel tracking tests, such as the APA. The study also included the generation of a three-dimensional (3D) model of HWT-tested asphalt specimens, the extraction of 3D coordinates, and the calculation of specimen heave height and rut depth. The proposed methodology was verified by comparing the calculated rut depths with laboratory-measured rut depths. The proposed methodology measured the heave height of the HWT-tested specimens with reasonable accuracy. Furthermore, a linear relationship was observed between the rut depth and heave height of the tested specimens. A theoretical study of the non‐radiative photophysical relaxation mechanisms of the first singlet excited state of benzene, cyclobutadiene and fulvene is presented. For these molecules, the calculation of the Minimum Energy Path (MEP) leading from the Franck–Condon region to the surface crossing with the ground state is carried out. Subsequently, the decomposition of the electronic energies into atomic and pair contributions is performed using the Interacting Quantum Atom (IQA) method. The IQA approach provides the important mechanistic information necessary to rationalise some relevant aspects of the processes, such as the components that explain the appearance of an energy barrier or that favour the crossing between potential energy surfaces (PES); it also allows to quantify the direct effect on the MEP due to the inclusion of a substituent. In particular, it is shown how the IQA energies allow measuring the extent to which the formation of biradicaloid structures affects the crossing of the PES. The analysis of electron density functions suggests that aromaticity is not a driving force on the relaxation processes. The abundance of pond ash and its resemblance to natural sand encourages its use as a substitute for sand in sand–bentonite (SB) liner material. Compaction water content influences the geoengineering properties of cohesive soil to a great extent. Accordingly, the compaction, strength, permeability and shrinkage characteristics of both pond ash–bentonite (PAB) and SB mixes are investigated at standard and modified Proctor compaction energies at various water contents to support the recommendation of the PAB mixture as an alternative landfill liner. At similar compaction conditions, the PAB mix exhibits higher unconfined compressive strength (UCS) and hydraulic conductivity than the SB mix. The UCS values of mixes compacted on the dry side of optimum are higher than those of mixes compacted on the wet side. Dry-side compacted mixes exhibit a reduction in hydraulic conductivity with permeation time, whereas no substantial reduction in hydraulic conductivity is noticed for wet-side compacted mixes. Furthermore, the volumetric shrinkage of both PAB and SB mixes is within the permissible value of 4%, for a wide range of water variation from the dry to the wet side of optimum. The observed mechanical properties are correlated to the shape of coarse fraction particles and the corresponding microstructural arrangements of the compacted specimens. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The ways in which a coach conceptualises the needs of a client is central to the way the coaching journey unfolds. In other forms of applied psychology interventions are designed and delivered through the aid of a formulation which is widely recognised as a core competence for professional psychologists. Formulation can be understood as a unique form of storytelling and is a process through which a coach and client make sense of the client's aims and needs, identify the factors of influence, and use this conceptualisation to design a way forward. Although historically, the relevance of formulation to coaching has been underexplored, it is now gaining recognition as a distinct capability and one which may have particular value in contexts of complexity – the terrain that many coaches increasingly inhabit. Exploring formulation from the perspective of different disciplines, including the performing arts, as well as recent and current work within coaching, this article, based on a keynote presentation for the Division of Coaching Psychology's annual conference in June 2023, considers how embedding formulation in our coaching might enable us to enhance our practice, co-construct more effective stories about our clients' needs and contribute in new and ever more creative ways to meet the needs of our clients in a rapidly changing world. The high-speed railway subgrade compaction quality is controlled by the compaction degree (K), with the maximum dry density (ρdmax) serving as a crucial indicator for its calculation. The current mechanisms and methods for determining the ρdmax still suffer from uncertainties, inefficiencies, and lack of intelligence. These deficiencies can lead to insufficient assessments for the high-speed railway subgrade compaction quality, further impacting the operational safety of high-speed railways. In this paper, a novel method for full-section assessment of high-speed railway subgrade compaction quality based on ML-interval prediction theory is proposed. Firstly, based on indoor vibration compaction tests, a method for determining the ρdmax based on the dynamic stiffness Krb turning point is proposed. Secondly, the Pso-OptimalML-Adaboost (POA) model for predicting ρdmax is determined based on three typical machine learning (ML) algorithms, which are back propagation neural network (BPNN), support vector regression (SVR), and random forest (RF). Thirdly, the interval prediction theory is introduced to quantify the uncertainty in ρdmax prediction. Finally, based on the Bootstrap-POA-ANN interval prediction model and spatial interpolation algorithms, the interval distribution of ρdmax across the full-section can be determined, and a model for full-section assessment of compaction quality is developed based on the compaction standard (95%). Moreover, the proposed method is applied to determine the optimal compaction thicknesses (H0), within the station subgrade test section in the southwest region. The results indicate that: (1) The PSO-BPNN-AdaBoost model performs better in the accuracy and error metrics, which is selected as the POA model for predicting ρdmax. (2) The Bootstrap-POA-ANN interval prediction model for ρdmax can construct clear and reliable prediction intervals. (3) The model for full-section assessment of compaction quality can provide the full-section distribution interval for K. Comparing the H0 of 50~60 cm and 60~70 cm, the compaction quality is better with the H0 of 40~50 cm. In mammalian cells, the cohesin protein complex is believed to translocate along chromatin during interphase to form dynamic loops through a process called active loop extrusion. Chromosome conformation capture and imaging experiments have suggested that chromatin adopts a compact structure with limited interpenetration between chromosomes and between chromosomal sections. We developed a theory demonstrating that active loop extrusion causes the apparent fractal dimension of chromatin to cross-over between two and four at contour lengths on the order of 30 kilo-base pairs. The anomalously high fractal dimension D = 4 is due to the inability of extruded loops to fully relax during active extrusion. Compaction on longer contour length scales extends within topologically associated domains (TADs), facilitating gene regulation by distal elements. Extrusion-induced compaction segregates TADs such that overlaps between TADs are reduced to less than 35% and increases the entanglement strand of chromatin by up to a factor of 50 to several Mega-base pairs. Furthermore, active loop extrusion couples cohesin motion to chromatin conformations formed by previously extruding cohesins and causes the mean square displacement of chromatin loci during lag times (Δ t) longer than tens of minutes to be proportional to Δ t 1/3. We validate our results with hybrid molecular dynamics--Monte Carlo simulations and show that our theory is consistent with experimental data. This work provides a theoretical basis for the compact organization of interphase chromatin, explaining the physical reason for TAD segregation and suppression of chromatin entanglements which contribute to efficient gene regulation. Modern criticism tends to assume that the excess of meaning in Shakespeare’s language gives voice to forces other than the motivations of his characters. But this critical tendency diminishes Shakespeare’s approach to characterisation. Focusing on The Merchant of Venice, my essay shows how the play continually encourages spectators and readers to sense implicit meaning in a character’s speech, without clarifying whether any meaning is actually being implied. The surprise of the play is that its characters turn such ambiguity to their advantage by employing proxy forms of expression that allow them to say indirectly what they would otherwise feel powerless to say. These proxy languages, however, exact a cost: they alienate characters from themselves by distancing them from their own intentions. While moneylending, for example, helps the title character of the play, the merchant Antonio, express his love for Bassanio with increasing fervency, it also turns him suicidal; so, too, does Shylock’s moneylending empower and then disempower him. The more successful form of proxy expression in the Merchant seems to be Portia’s disguise as Balthazar. But the essay ends by asking whether Shakespeare himself thought he paid a price for speaking indirectly through disguises. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
