This work reports the development and application of an analytical tool for the analysis of the formation of the scientific mind of students who took part in inquiry activities, based on the philosophy of Gaston Bachelard, in a Chemistry Club. For the construction of the analytical instrument, an extracurricular course was offered to first-year high school students in which theoretical-practical inquiry activities were carried out at level 4, where the students were required to propose a hypothesis to begin the inquiry activities. Based on the students' responses, as well as on the theoretical framework and other theoretical perspectives on science teaching -- which also take inquiry teaching into account, the analytical instrument, titled Analytical Map of the Scientific Mind, was constructed. The validation of the instrument was carried out through the application of double-blind analysis of the responses provided by the students in the inquiry-based activities developed in the Chemistry Club. The findings of this study showed that the analytical tool was able to categorise the ideas expressed by the students and helped monitor the development of the scientific mind.

The specific focus of this study is how a team of four preservice teachers experienced a collaborative practicum model to support the development of cogenerative dialogue and foster professional growth. Data sources included individual video club annotations and the associated group discussions facilitated by comparison of groups members selected annotations. The analysis found that participation in peer collaboration provided multiple viewpoints of shared teaching experiences that enabled preservice teachers' different ways to notice student thinking. Providing a structured framework for reflection, namely the individual video club annotations, served as the genesis for cogenerative dialogues centered on instructional change for the preservice teachers. This work's implications showcase the importance of allowing for the iterative enactment and reflection on pedagogical choices by preservice teachers early in their professional development.

In a rapidly emerging world, knowledge management capabilities, including knowledge creation, acquisition, sharing, and utilization, become more critical for organizational change, growth, and competitiveness. Therefore, this article argues that organizations should consider implementing effective journal club meetings as an opportunity to acquire external knowledge, evaluate and integrate new knowledge into previous existing knowledge, and disseminate and utilize new knowledge to enhance product or service quality, innovation, and the performance of an organization. The article reviews relevant literature, proposes a framework for conducting effective journal club meetings, and aligns those activities with the knowledge management processes. The article proposes a framework for conducting effective journal club meetings and a process that integrates both journal club activities and the knowledge management process. By adopting this framework, journal club activities would be more effective in developing new knowledge management capabilities among individual members and enhancing organizational performance, i.e., implementing evidence-based practices (EBP), improving service quality, and producing research.

This study examines the impact of a situated learning class framework on student learning and sense of belonging in a first-year introductory computer programming course offered at an urban commuter campus. The framework provided students opportunities to engage in hands-on activities embedded in authentic contexts facilitated or led by students from computer science clubs and a service-learning program. Our results suggest that 1) participation in peer interactions within the classroom helped students build learning communities and networks beyond the classroom and strengthened their development of a professional identity; 2) through redesigning curriculum and pedagogy to accommodate students' needs and learning styles, college and university faculty may cultivate a collaborative culture and a sense of belonging at various levels: classroom, department, and campus.

Place-based learning encourages students to explore their local communities, learn about history, and develop critical thinking skills. This article focuses on six middle school students who participated in a History Club and entered the National History Day competition and discovered how history and place liberates learning.

Using the Pennsylvania Department of Education Family/Community Standards, university professors from the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford collaborated with multiple community clubs such as the Rotary and Kiwanis as well as local agencies including St. Bonaventure University on the development and implementation of a family literacy day event that assisted a rural community with increasing family literacy engagement. Seventeen community agencies/clubs and forty-two university students engaged in event coordination. Thirty-two families, including 82 children, attended. These standards aided in an efficacious first year event.

This study explored the impact of the alternative learning activity (ALA) program offered in the Philippine Science High School-Ilocos Region Campus toward students' leadership abilities. A mixed-methods approach was used to conduct the study through a survey of 132 student leaders affiliated with ALA clubs in the years 2022 to 2024. The results indicated that the participants exhibited strong expertise in communication, critical thinking, character development, citizenship, diversity appreciation, global understanding, and skill development in the measured indicators, suggesting that the ALA program is effective in producing well-rounded leaders. The findings also showed that almost all dimensions of leadership qualities exhibited the strong positive relationships between indicators, indicating their significant relationship and hinting that effective leadership is multidimensional. In ALA clubs, it was found that excellent leadership practices include providing diverse learning opportunities ("kataguyod"), offering targeted skill training ("katuwang"), offering mentorship and peer support ("kaagapay"), provision of leadership support ("kalakbay"), and inclusivity enhancement ("kabahagi"). These are beneficial practices, not only instill skills among the members but they also promote personal development. These findings show the importance of specialized leadership training in preparation for varied leadership roles.

As part of developing the University of Arizona Cooperative Extension 4-H Common Measures system, we created resources for communicating results to stakeholders with research-based visual tools. We outline the creation of two tools that may be useful to CE personnel to use evaluation findings to better "tell their story" to a variety of stakeholders. Effectively telling this story often means addressing the question "so what?". These tools, 1) Outcome Linkages and 2) Infographics can translate the program's "so what?" in easily interpretable and visually engaging ways. Step by step processes are reviewed to guide creation and use of both tools.

Cooperative Extension professionals utilize proven qualitative techniques to collect and analyze information to make data-driven decisions that guide program direction and determine impact. While the process may not always look the same, it is indeed essential to ensure findings are credible and reflective of the data. A codebook is a valuable tool that promotes interrater reliability among teams and enhances the reliability of findings. This article provides an overview of the process used to analyze qualitative data and the steps followed to create a codebook. Examples of the analysis process and codebook development are provided from the 4-H multi-state Youth Retention Study.

There is a defined need to provide accessible and effective professional development for 4-H educators. Lesson study is a Community of Practice-based approach to educator professional development. Prior research has shown lesson study to be effective with 4-H staff, adult volunteers, and teen volunteers. This inquiry, a multisite case study, was designed to investigate the application of lesson study in authentic contexts with 4-H county agents from 1890 land-grant universities. Quantitative and qualitative measures revealed improved preparedness, participation, and camaraderie among participating educators. Other benefits to participants included improved lesson planning and implementation.

Young people need digital competency and confidence to effectively harness computing power to solve problems and design solutions; a core component is improving young people's computational thinking. Unfortunately, access to computer science education is lacking for all youth, and in particular for youth who live in lower-income households, who are Black or Latino, or live in rural areas. With funding from Google, through the National 4-H Council, California 4-H embarked on a three-year project to build the capacity of 4-H professionals, volunteers, and teenagers to facilitate computer science education with youth. Our programming was effective as assessed with survey methodology. We offer recommendations to Extension professionals in replicating computer science education.

Extension Professionals have varying expectations of academic publication depending on tenure and promotion. And, the field of Extension needs the contributions of professionals across the system to support the translation and dissemination of the impacts of and findings from their Extension programming for academic and practitioner audiences. A writing retreat was held to support 4-H Youth Development professionals in academic writing. Because of this writing retreat five teams started working on an academic writing project which resulted in three journal articles being published. Teams also published conference presentations and Extension publications as a result of the initial academic writing project. Intentionally providing writing retreats that prepare professionals to write can support effective capacity building for academic publishing.

The 4-H program is America's largest youth development organization (National 4-H Council, 2019). The 4-H program is part of the Cooperative Extension system, which provides unbiased, research-based educational programming to communities through the land grant university system (USDA, 2019). Volunteers play a major role in the delivery and functioning of Cooperative Extension's 4-H Youth Development program. 4-H volunteer leaders serve in various capacities (Radhakrishna & Ewing, 2011), including leading 4-H clubs, organizing educational clinics for youth members on various topics, and assisting with educational events and camps. Around ten thousand volunteers currently serve the Pennsylvania 4-H program. 1, 2018). In the 4-H program, volunteers often spend more time with youth and families than 4-H Extension educators and paid program staff, as they are the adults teaching and working with the youth. This can lead to volunteers having a closer relationship with 4-H members than 4-H staff. Despite volunteers' integral role in maintaining the 4-H program, Penn State Extension has not recently examined 4-H volunteer leaders' satisfaction (Dr. Josh Rice, , October 1, 2018 personal communication), reasons for volunteering, and turnover intention. Ensuring volunteers are satisfied and provided with conditions to thrive and grow through their work is vital to 4-H and the Cooperative Extension system. 4-H educators must understand volunteer service motivators (Cleveland & Thompson, 2007) to recruit and maintain dedicated and fulfilled volunteers. Therefore, the authors examined Pennsylvania 4-H Extension volunteers' experience with volunteering in a twenty-first century context. Results will help improve Pennsylvania Extension's 4-H program's service for volunteers, enhance volunteers' effectiveness in the Pennsylvania 4-H program, and improve clientele satisfaction. Services for volunteers include training and recognition programs. If volunteer feedback data support volunteer programming, they will likely make volunteers feel more satisfied with their experience (Pascuet et al., 2012).

In light of the proven benefits of high-quality afterschool STEM programming for teens, the author worked with colleagues at University of Maryland Extension to institute the Pollinator Ambassador program. The program was launched through a county-based 4-H program at a partner site in a community outside Washington, DC. Following the 4-H Thriving Model and other research-based best practices, the program introduced participants to the vital importance of bees and other pollinators through hands-on activities. Its success in engaging participants and building their awareness of science careers can make it a model for other STEM-based youth development programs.

This transformative autoethnography focuses on the authors' learning about diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) as a result of their participation in university diversity-related book clubs and subsequent extensive dialogue with one another. The paper features three implementation vignettes where the authors engage in critical self-reflection and self-critique as they (re)consider ways to improve their educational practice as it pertains to DEI. The paper ends with implications for educators to consider as they engage in critical self-reflection/self-critique around DEI in their work.

According to the American Counseling Association and the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs, social justice advocacy is an ethical imperative for counselors and a training standard for counseling students. As a group of socially conscious mental health counseling students and faculty, we developed and facilitated a social justice advocacy group to learn about tangible ways to engage in social justice action. Using the S-Quad model developed by Toporek and Ahluwalia, we formed and facilitated a social justice advocacy group for our peers. This paper will serve as a reflection of our experiences engaging in the process.

Amidst the backdrop of rising censorship legislation, it is important to understand the influence of teachers' particular contexts on their perceptions of potentially controversial texts and subsequent instructional choices. This study explores five in-service teachers' acts of positioning observed in year-long antibias antiracist professional book club, which facilitated educators' access to such texts and opened space for imagining ways to incorporate them into classroom practice. The findings illuminate how teachers positioned their school's moral framework, their responsibilities towards families, and specific texts as possible for classroom use. Furthermore, this study prompts critical reflection on the role of facilitators in revising contextual storylines while highlighting the persistent challenges of breaking free from entrenched storylines in pursuit of antibias antiracist pedagogy.

Haitian Creole, or Krey'ol, has a unique history because it is historically an oral language; however, significant efforts have been made to standardize its orthography and to promote its literacy base. It also comes from a diglossic society: Haitian Creole is spoken in familiar settings such as the home, while French is used in formal settings such as government spaces. While Haitian Creole is the source of national pride for many Haitians, it is unfortunately stigmatized by many, and many Haitians do not read or write in Haitian Creole. This brings up new questions regarding parents' needs within a literacy program. For example, it was unknown if Haitian families in Miami-Dade would want books in Haitian Creole for their children. As such, we also sought to examine how the family reading program Baralt et al. 729 could best support Haitian families' needs in addition to other minoritized families. To this end, the overall aims of this study were to: 1. Characterize the literacy environment of families in Miami-Dade County, including (a) books and supporting materials, (b) time spent engaging in shared reading, and (c) facilitators as well as barriers of reading. 2. Learn about Miami-Dade families' hopes and goals for their children's literacy, as well as their concerns and worries. 3. Identify family needs and preferences regarding the design of a family reading program, including (a) books, (b) guides, (c) trusted resources for support, and (d) preferred modes of communication between the program and participants.

Purpose: Internalizing conditions, such as anxiety and depression, and difficulties with developing and maintaining friendships are common among autistic children and adolescents. Participation in extracurricular activities may buffer against these challenges as they provide naturalistic opportunities to bring peers with shared interests and skills together. As such, the purpose of the current study was to examine associations between sport and club participation and (1) friendship success and (2) co-occurring anxiety and depression in a large sample of autistic youth. Methods: Secondary analysis was performed using data from the 2018-2019 National Survey of Children's Health. Participants were 562 autistic children (ages 6-11 years) and 818 autistic adolescents (ages 12-17 years). Within each age group, a series of binary logistic regression analyses were conducted. Results: Club participation was not associated with friendship or internalizing conditions. However, participation in sports was positively associated with friendship success among both children (OR = 2.07, p = 0.006) and adolescents (OR = 2.35, p = 0.001). Results also found that adolescents who participated in sports were 34% less likely to have diagnosis of depression (p = 0.048). Conclusion: Findings suggest that participation in sports may play a meaningful role in protecting against depression during adolescence and serve as a context for friendship development across childhood and adolescence. Future research should address barriers to extracurricular activity participation and identify the specific components of sports that are most beneficial to autistic youth to inform activity offerings and the development of interventions targeting friendship formation and mental health outcomes.

This ethnographic case study explores how parents participating in reading experiences influenced children's responses to culturally relevant texts. I focus on six Chinese American families who participated in an online family book club. The children were between the ages of four and six and spoke both English and Chinese Mandarin. In each session, the families listened to an interactive read-aloud, participated in a family book discussion after reading, and shared a question/connection with the group. The data included transcribed video-recordings, transcripts of the family's book discussions, and transcripts of interviews conducted with the families. These data were analyzed using Nexus Analysis and grounded coding methods. Findings showed that parents fostered connections between the child, the book, and their own relationship to the book. These connections reflected heritage culture, family history, and family experiences. The parents shaped the children's reading experience and cultural knowledge by building on and extending existing cultural knowledge, redirecting children to attend to new cultural knowledge, choosing not to address certain types of cultural knowledge, utilizing home resources, and cultivating intercultural awareness and language learning. This study has implications for teachers and educators who want to engage parents in supporting children's cultural knowledge.

An important measure of the success of a tertiary education programme is the attributes that graduates possess at the completion of their studies. Universities have sought to address this issue by developing formal curriculum and programmes such as internships and work-integrated learning. However, little is known about how university-based extracurricular activities contribute to graduate attributes. The purpose of this study is to explore participation in extracurricular activities from a student perspective. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 22 student leaders of university-based sporting, social and academic clubs. Data collection and analysis were guided by a qualitative approach to thematic analysis. The findings indicate that students developed a range of graduate attributes in areas such as such as leadership, teamwork, communication and resilience. The theory, communities of practice, is used to interpret the participants' experiences which was found to coalesce around their social interactions and relations. The study concludes with several recommendations for universities to create greater opportunities for their students to participate in extracurricular activities.

Triboluminescence is a fascinating phenomenon that can engage students' interest in chemistry. However, safe, cost-effective, and accessible laboratory experiments featuring highly triboluminescent substances are limited. To bridge this gap, we present a simple, rapid, semimicro test tube preparation of the visually engaging manganese complex [MnBr[subscript 2](Ph[subscript 3]PO)[subscript 2]], conducted by high school students. During the laboratory session, students practice various laboratory skills, including handling semimicro quantities of substances, ascertaining the melting point, and recrystallizing the synthesized complex. They also investigate the complex's triboluminescent, fluorescent, and magnetic properties through straightforward and illustrative experiments. Furthermore, this laboratory activity has been successfully implemented in an undergraduate chemistry didactics course for chemistry educators. The experiment's simplicity, combined with the safety of starting materials and use of nontoxic solvents, makes it an optimal choice for a variety of educational environments, such as high school and university laboratory sessions, science clubs, and public science outreach activities.

This study examines the experiences of 10 neurodiverse students in Amsterdam, Netherlands, who all participated within in-class youth-led book clubs that centered science fiction. Over a 6-month period, the researcher conducted pre- and post-interviews and analyzed these along with transcription data from 24 book club sessions. Findings reveal that book clubs, using culturally sustaining science fiction and healing-centered facilitative practices, provide opportunities to address students' academic and emotional literacies as well as their sense of agency.

Youth purpose was investigated using a two-phase embedded design with youth participating in Scouts BSA (N = 3,943), ages 9-20 (M = 14.0, SD = 1.9). Participating Scouts were mostly White (91%) and male (98%). In Phase 1, we conducted a two-step cluster analysis on Scouts' survey responses to three purpose dimensions (personal meaning, goal-directedness, beyond-the-self orientation). Four clusters emerged: "Purposeful", "Explorers", "Dreamers", "Nonpurposeful." In Phase 2, we explored qualities of purpose within each cluster and programmatic features and relationships within the scouting context fostering youth purpose with a Scout subsample (N = 30) who completed semi-structured interviews. Results demonstrated that adults supporting scouting, inspiration from older peers, and opportunities to help others and explore new activities supported youth purpose.

As more adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities move into inclusive settings in the community, it is essential to address budgeting and finance issues to avoid real concerns of financial exploitation. Adults with intellectual and developmental disability often comprise the "working poor", even if they are among the 20% who are fortunate enough to have access to community-based, paid employment at above minimum wage. Those fortunate enough to be placed on government assistance (1 in 4 are still waiting for funded services) soon realize that this benefit comes with restrictions on their income and savings. These restrictions impact work options, pay range, and benefits. Each person's budget leaves little for saving and discretionary spending. Our present situation of rising inflation compounds these already significant concerns.

This article reports youths´ interests and concerns during the COVID-19 pandemic by analyzing what Argentine students aged 12 to 18 years expressed within the 2020 edition of TED-Ed Clubs, an extracurricular school program aimed at developing and communicating an idea following a TED-talk format. Based on video recordings of a random sample of 100 students´ talks, we identified six recurring themes: 'current social affairs' such as gender equality and social media; 'Interpersonal relationships', focusing on adolescents´ bonds with peers and adults; 'rethinking lifestyles' such as the importance of developing healthy habits; 'sharing passions' typically describing activities about which they felt passionate, such as sports; 'self-discovery', which addressed introspective insights; and 'Pandemic' when referring to the current health crisis. In all cases, students aimed to engage and inspire their audience to reflect and act upon these issues. Results speak of the value of creating learning environments at school for youth voices to be acknowledged.

This U.S. study evaluated the effects of a reading intervention for emergent bilingual students with significant reading difficulties in Grades 6 and 7 within a multisite randomized controlled trial. Emergent bilinguals were randomized to a researcher-provided intervention (n = 171) or business-as-usual comparison condition (n = 169). Results on a measure of word reading indicated significant differences favoring treatment after Year 1; however, there were no significant differences between groups on standardized measures of reading comprehension. Initial English vocabulary knowledge moderated reading comprehension scores at the beginning of the second year of intervention, indicating that students' response to instruction varied as a function of their initial English language proficiency. The discussion focuses on interpreting these findings with an emphasis on improving the effectiveness of interventions for secondary grade emergent bilinguals with significant reading difficulties.

Research in mathematics education has placed significant emphasis on teacher identity, particularly during teacher education, since it plays a critical role in shaping the identity of preservice teachers with regard to teaching mathematics. However, as teacher identity is context dependent, it is essential to study preservice teachers' identities in various contexts to develop expertise in mathematics teacher education. This study explored the transformation of preservice mathematics teachers' (PMTs) teacher identity orientations after participating in a video club. Concentrating on task perceptions as the indicator of teacher identity, the change in the teacher roles that PMTs would like to adopt in the future and the student outcomes they associated with these roles were investigated. The analysis of teacher identity orientations before and after participating in the video club revealed that PMTs' teacher identity orientations were transformed by their participation because the video club increased their self-awareness and understanding of the complexity of teaching mathematics. The most noticeable transformation was observed in the didactical roles and their associated outcomes. These roles were transformed from being a didactical expert aiming to develop students' affective outcomes to being a didactical expert who prioritizes students' cognitions. Although PMTs' expertise in teaching mathematics and the content of the video cases limited their orientations, the video club can simulate alternative experiences for teacher education programs aiming to support PMTs' teacher identity orientations.

Background: Pedagogical approaches that support young people's well-being and maximize their potential are among the "Journal of School Health" research priorities. A unique form of observational learning called biblioguidance could be a pedagogical approach. Methods: We, a team of researchers and teachers, implemented biblioguidance book clubs with 10th-grade health education students. While the initial focus was health literacy skills, we also aimed to generate psychosocial benefits. Those benefits are the focus of the current descriptive phenomenological research. A final book club reflection captured the benefits students received and documented their transformation. We randomly selected 42 reflections from the sample pool (n = 168) and coded them via descriptive document analysis. Results: The results indicate that the book clubs provided psychosocial benefits. Students identified with the stories and characters, gained insight into others' perspectives, lived experiences, and "ways of the world," and were, in many ways, transformed. Some students even experienced catharsis, citing hope, validation, and feeling less alone. Implications for School Health Policy, Practice, and Equity: Biblioguidance book clubs could offer an innovative pedagogical approach to advance students' psychosocial well-being and engage them as active participants in their own learning and health.

In this article we present our findings regarding of providing online educational activities, delivered by six adults, during 13 weeks (first semester 2020) to 15 children aging from 5 to 7 (the Beaver scouts), on a non-formal education context. The activities combined guided play and problem-based learning activities. Our research objective was to analyzed the method followed, uncovering the dynamics the drove the activities and the consequences. We followed an action research approach in order to understand the feedback loops present in the delivery of online educational activities. The data was collected from the minutes of the meetings, the activities' plans and the notes taken from observations of the online activities and notes taken during the debriefing activities. We analyzed the data by means of a systemic analysis. Our findings are: 1) The diversification of activities (physical, artistic, and social) provided by the leaders and the parent´s support and participation fostered the children engagement and motivation to learn. 2) The continuous improvement of the teach and learning techniques and the right use of IT tools, facilitated the communication and the delivery of meaningful online activities.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, undergraduate research experiences were deeply impacted--either canceled or pivoted to a range of remote experiences. In Summer 2020 and Spring 2021, we designed two rounds of remote programming aimed to build students' life science research skills and provide opportunities for mentoring and networking. Building skills, resumes, and connections in our students -- many of whom are first-generation college students and/or from historically marginalized communities -- are key to retention in the STEM "leaky pipeline." We created 33 online events including R workshops, journal clubs, and career panels featuring 25 alumni. Participants received a certificate of completion for their resumes and a letter of recommendation, which could be used to apply for future research experiences. Our program was non-selective, flexible, and accessible to all students, while being low-cost to our institution, allowing us to accommodate a sizeable number of students (87 total). This program serves a different purpose than summer internship programs, which are impactful and intensive experiences, but are highly selective and limited in capacity. Through this work, we gained insight into key features of this virtual programming, which could be adapted by other institutions seeking to design programming to prepare students to future undergraduate research experiences.

Secret societies and fraternal orders came to America with the arrival of the colonists, bringing ideals that influenced the founding of the United States. As the country grew and prospered, so did fraternal organizations, which exerted political influence, provided mutual aid for health and security to its members, and were instrumental in the growth of civic engagement. During the height of the Golden Age of Fraternity, one third of American men were members of a fraternal order. With the Depression of the 1930's, fraternal societies began a slow decline that continues to the present although the groups evolved to became more inclusive in their membership and took on community service projects in their local communities. Scholars suggest that despite efforts to adapt to societal changes, fraternal groups, like other American civic institutions, are suffering from the growing lack of civic engagement in society, which may be traced in part to the rise of digital communication. This paper follows the evolution of fraternal organizations in the United States, explores their changing roles in society, and suggests additional research to explore the future viability of fraternal groups.

Communicating science effectively is an essential part of the development of science literacy. Research has shown that introducing primary scientific literature through journal clubs can improve student learning outcomes, including increased scientific knowledge. However, without scaffolding, students can miss more complex aspects of science literacy, including how to analyze and present scientific data. In this study, we apply a modified CREATE(S) process (Concept map the introduction, Read methods and results, Elucidate hypotheses, Analyze data, Think of the next Experiment, and Synthesis map) to improve students' science literacy skills, specifically their understanding of the process of science and their ability to use narrative synthesis to communicate science. We tested this hypothesis using a retrospective quasi-experimental study design in upper-division undergraduate courses. We compared learning outcomes for CREATES intervention students to those for students who took the same courses before CREATES was introduced. Rubric-guided, direct evidence assessments were used to measure student gains in learning outcomes. Analyses revealed that CREATES intervention students versus the comparison group demonstrated improved ability to interpret and communicate primary literature, especially in the methods, hypotheses, and narrative synthesis learning outcome categories. Through a mixed-methods analysis of a reflection assignment completed by the CREATES intervention group, students reported the synthesis map as the most frequently used step in the process and highly valuable to their learning. Taken together, the study demonstrates how this modified CREATES process can foster scientific literacy development and how it could be applied in science, technology, engineering, and math journal clubs.

College-sponsored Mental Health Clubs (MHCs) are a 21st-century phenomenon, helping to reduce mental health stigma at colleges across the country. MHCs take many shapes, but most focus on psychoeducation, reducing stigma, advocacy, and peer-to-peer support. These clubs are especially attractive to groups like LGBTQ students and students of color who come to college with additional traumas and identity issues. Trends in training club leaders and members are discussed, and the role of the counseling center as a sponsoring organization is highlighted. Issues of liability are presented, particularly those having to do with: a) the responsibilities of mental health club advisors, b) duty to warn issues, c) dual relationship issues, and d) brave space paradigms and triggering situations. The need and utility of peer-to-peer support groups have been well-documented for decades. Still, the successful transition to mental health clubs under the auspicious of the college requires special vigilance to protect both students and the college.

In this Report on Practice, we explore both the process and an approach of engaging Undergraduate Students in research using a Research Institute setting. Drawing from our experience we conceive of the learning process as a series of interactions and transactions that face the same impediments as any transaction or interaction The approach, we report on is one rooted in the reduction of the transaction costs that exist in the process of learning for students and for faculty. We develop both our understanding of this reality and report our approach and the programs we developed to engage students in economic research focused on public policy questions.

This paper focuses on the influence of task types, namely divergent and convergent tasks, on the interactional space of learners and the amount of collaboration in EFL adult learners' interactions naturally emerging from performing each type of task. To define interactional space, behavioural engagement measurement was adopted, and the total number of turns and words were quantified to define the distribution of learner talk in each task. Additionally, the categories of collaborative behaviours were quantified for both task types to illustrate their distribution in the tasks. The data of this study involve eleven hours of learner interactions collected from an EFL context where the learners voluntarily participated in a speaking club and completed eight tasks. The interactions were audio-recorded and used for the analysis of the influence of task types on learners' L2 production and the distribution of collaboration in each task. The results yield a difference in the amount of L2 production between tasks; for example, convergent tasks facilitate more L2 turns and more L2 words than divergent tasks although the mean length of utterance is higher in divergent tasks. Similarly, the distribution of collaborative behaviours is mostly higher in convergent tasks. The results are discussed in relation to both interactionist and sociocultural theories of L2 learning and some implications are also provided based on the results.

This study evaluates Momentum Bicycle Clubs (MBC) through the empowerment-based positive youth development framework (EMPYD). Data were collected through eight cross-sectional focus groups of MBC youth participants (ages 10-17). Sessions included three topics: the MBC program, the mentors, and the bicycle, all of which elucidated elements of an EMPYD program for analysis. The data were analyzed utilizing an interpretative phenomenological approach. The results of the focus groups revealed how MBC empowers its youth participants. MBC displayed characteristics of the EMPYD model by providing youth with opportunities to develop mastery and moral identity in addition to the 5Cs of positive youth development. Interactions with a diverse set of mentors and peers allowed program participants to gain mastery of physical, social, and emotional skills. These connections also provided avenues for the development of empathy, caring, and character. MBC empowered its participants by fostering a sense of community that was dependable and consistent. However, the data did not reveal how or if MBC empowers youth to participate in active and engaged citizenship. MBC represents a programmatic model that utilizes many aspects of the EMPYD framework. MBC provide youth with the opportunity to develop mastery over the bicycle and to develop their moral reasoning through relationships with a group of adult mentors. With some adjustment, the program can further empower youth by providing intentional programming that focuses on culturally specific community building and by providing program participants with the opportunity to engage in culturally specific citizenship.

Informal community-based science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) clubs provide rich informal learning environments that help elementary-aged students develop STEM knowledge and skills while fostering their initial and continued interests in STEM. This phenomenographical case study sought to interpret stakeholders' (five university personnel, two club facilitators, one teacher, one parent, and three elementary students) conceptions of STEM and STEM clubs involved in a community-university partnership in an afterschool elementary STEM club at a community center. Phenomenographic analyses produced three hierarchical categories in stakeholders' conceptions of STEM: an indifference towards STEM, viewing STEM as a holistic discipline, and STEM as applicable and useful in life. Among stakeholders' conceptions of STEM clubs, four hierarchical categories described clubs as a non-STEM related space, a means to promote STEM, provide STEM learning, and an additional site (apart from school) to produce STEM knowledge, skills, and enjoyment. Findings suggest that community and university stakeholders held varying conceptions of the purpose of STEM, with the strongest disagreement in how informal STEM clubs should be structured. Stakeholders nonetheless agreed that STEM clubs were vital resources to promote STEM and enhance STEM-related life and soft skills.

Emotions are ubiquitous and permeate all aspects of human life, including language learning. However, little attention has been paid to emotions in the ELT curriculum, let alone in the design and implementation of conversations clubs. In this article, we share the qualitative results of a mixed-method study on students' emotions while participating in a conversation club at a public university in Colombia. Findings show an ample range of students' emotions, factors commonly associated with these emotions such as academic load and personal life, and the connections of emotions with students' language learning processes. This study identifies how emotions can facilitate or interfere with language learning, highlights the importance of emotions in the development of oral skills in the context of conversation clubs, and contributes to the understanding of the language learner from a holistic perspective in the field of Applied Linguistics.

Starting in fall of 2020, two faculty created and facilitated a book study with teacher candidates the semester before they entered student teaching. They read "This Book is Anti-Racist" by Tiffany Jewell and viewed the content through their own personal journey lenses and also applied the ideas to how they hope to bring anti-racism and multiculturalism into their teaching practice. In the spring of 2022, they conducted a pilot study to gauge the effectiveness in increasing teacher candidates' confidence in bringing anti-racism and cultural responsiveness to their teaching. Their initial findings showed promising results with a small sample size. They have progressed to over tripling their sample size during the fall 2022 semester with the hypothesis of seeing the promising pilot results further confirmed. This study has inspired ideas for future study and considerations for programmatic improvements, all with making anti-racism the norm for the teaching profession.

This article focused on uncovering the background of the youth lamenting unemployment in the presence of agribusiness employment opportunities. A phenomenological qualitative design was employed to generate in-depth information. The sample frame was formed of youth agribusiness clubs from the district agribusiness office. Purposive and snowball sampling was used to recruit participants doing different agribusinesses. Photovoice, focus group discussions, and oral interviews were used to generate data, which was analyzed using content, discourse, and thematic approaches. The data revealed that background factors such as age, educational attainment, and marital status were key factors in explaining youth unemployment in agribusiness employment opportunities. The study found that most youths in rural areas marry soon after dropping out of school, followed by taking up agriculture as a livelihood. Those youth dropping out of school before they turn 18 are considered children and enter agribusiness without the necessary skills. Systematically, they are forced to engage in agribusiness at a very young age, such as 14, in order to survive and to take on family responsibilities. The study recommended the introduction of practical agriculture in primary and secondary schools so that school dropouts at least gain agribusiness skills for self-employment, as well as deploying new ways of reducing early marriages.

This study examines how book clubs were used within a young adult literature course to foster a development of "sympathetic knowledge" of adolescence/ts in preservice teachers as they grappled with their shifting positionalities and subjectivities. Using Critical Narrative Analysis, the data from these young adult book club discussions showed that personal anecdotal responses, perspective-taking, and future casting through storytelling around dominant discourses of adolescents/ce aided in a social ethic toward a (re)negotiation of their charge as future educators of adolescents.

In the author's experience, students are often coming to the school library to explore new ideas and concepts that they may not be able to explore in the traditional classroom because of curricular demands or time constraints. And the library is always open to that exploration. According to the author, they build the high-interest collections for this purpose. The author ensures they have books that capitalize on students' curiosity and allow them to learn new things about themselves -- to be brave and see where they can go. Then there are those who come to learn in less traditional ways in the library. The author states they are notorious for always saying "Yes!" to trying something new in the library if students make a case for it. This is how they have gotten a bearded dragon, a sewing club, a recording studio, coding workshops, a Dungeons & Dragons club, and a forthcoming e-sports team. Saying "Yes" comes from a wish to respect students' courage to explore. But having a pet also gives the students a moment to show a different kind of bravery: feeling vulnerable but doing something anyway. In New York City, the Department of Education has an initiative called "Respect for All." The author's campus serves a primarily Afro-Caribbean population. This means students who are queer are feeling a tremendous amount of societal pressure. Books on relationships, sexuality, abuse, dealing with being arrested -- resources on topics that students are dealing with but are too nervous to check out. All of this seeking of this important and sensitive information takes bravery, even if young people choose not to interface with me to acquire it. Most of the time, it's an admission to themselves that they need guidance. It takes bravery to organize your peers, to take charge, and to build a community. It takes courage to work together and to make decisions on your own. Because the school library is a center of self-guided learning, it harnesses this brand of bravery. The school library is a proving ground for leadership, collaboration, and finding oneself. Students demonstrate this every day in school libraries across the country. Students see the school library as somewhere worth fighting for, and their bravery is the truly sustaining power in our space.

After learning that her LGBTQ+ students didn't feel accepted by their peers or their teachers, the author and her students came together to brainstorm ways to educate their peers and teachers and increase LGBTQ+ visibility. In this article, the author describes her role as a high school librarian in founding the "Rainbow Conference" to create a more safe and inclusive school through educating students, staff, and families on LGBTQ+ topics; establishing a school literary magazine named "Rainbow Vision"; and forming "Reading the Rainbow," a virtual book club where registrants can receive a free book and converse with the author.

It is crucial that academic institutions offer support to their increasingly diverse student bodies. LGBTQIA+ students often report negative experiences in relation to campus climate and treatment. The aim of this qualitative research was to explore the experiences of LGBTQIA+ students who attend(ed) a collaborative (staff and student), departmentally located (psychology) virtual (synchronous and asynchronous online) Pride group. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with four LGBTQIA+ students who had attended one or more virtual group meetings. Interviews were transcribed and analysed using Braun and Clarke's (2006; 2019; 2022) reflexive thematic analysis. Four themes were constructed: being and becoming authentic; safe and restorative spaces; community, and connections. Together these four themes relate to an overarching theme of belonging. Although the cohort was small, the emphatic and consistent findings point to the importance of visible representation of LGBTQIA+ academic staff and the need to provide joint Pride group spaces in academic settings.

Debate is a universally acknowledged competency for its vital role in fostering essential skills such as analytical reasoning, eloquent communication, and persuasive argument construction. This is relevant in both formal educational settings like classrooms and informal venues such as after-school clubs. Traditional debate training methods often face challenges in facilitating personalized learning, primarily due to the difficulty of securing a debate partner. However, the emerging field of generative AI offers a promising alternative. This study evaluates the effectiveness of DEBO, a debate education application that utilizes ChatGPT, an advanced language model by OpenAI. Focusing on university students actively involved in a debate club, six volunteers tested DEBO and participated in interviews to provide insights. The findings reveal that DEBO notably enhances divergent thinking and features a comprehensive analytics dashboard for in-depth performance analysis. However, there are few limitations including occasional shortcomings in debate quality, minor inaccuracies, and the need for faster response times. The study underscores the transformative potential of advanced language models like ChatGPT in reshaping debate education, while also identifying areas for further improvement.
