While the threat of retaliation can stabilize cooperation, retaliatory cultures have also been linked to violence and war. There is little systematic evidence for cross-cultural variation in the use and consequences of retaliation in real-life settings. Analyzing a novel data set of foul play from three seasons of nine professional men's soccer leagues (n = 230 , 113), I show that players from a cultural background that places a higher value on revenge are more likely to retaliate for a foul during a game but are not more likely to commit fouls overall. I find that players are more retaliatory early on in a game, consistent with the use of retaliation as a deterrent to future transgression. Retaliation is indeed found to limit repeated offenses, as long as the perpetrator's cultural background also emphasizes retaliation. This informal conflict management interacts with formal sanctioning by the referee in several ways. Victims are less likely to retaliate if the foul was sanctioned with a yellow card, indicating a crowding out by the formal punishment mechanism. Both forms of sanction successfully reduce repeated offenses by the perpetrator of a foul, with sanctioning by a yellow card being around three times as effective as retaliation by the victim. These results provide unique evidence for cultural differences in establishing and maintaining cooperative equilibria and for the interaction of formal and informal punishment mechanisms for sustaining cooperation. This study revisits Engelmann and Strobel (2004), which tests theoretical models of fairness preferences with simple distribution games in a classroom environment with German students. We attempt to generalize the findings from ES (2004) to a digital context with US subjects by executing three experimental waves on Amazon Mechanical Turk. As in the original study, we find similar results for efficiency concerns and ERC. However, we find that selfishness motives have larger power for rationalizing allocation decisions while maximin preferences do not explain choices in our context. We draw on a plethora of replication criteria that lead up to 80% replication success with a large variation across criteria. We do not find meaningful preference changes during the pandemic using panel data from the first to the second wave. By leveraging a third wave, we show that lower maximin motives may be attributable to cultural differences in fairness considerations while larger selfishness preferences may be driven by the high anonymity in an online relative to a classroom environment. • We attempt to generalize the findings from Engelmann & Strobel (2004). • We conduct three experimental waves with US participants on MTurk. • We show similar results on efficiency and ERC preferences. • Selfishness plays a larger role to explain choices in the digital anonymous context. • Maximin concerns do not explain choices in our US sample. • The pandemic did not seem to alter fairness preferences significantly. The following article presents the findings of a Reverse Mentoring evaluation project conducted at a modern university in northwest England, which has a high proportion of students from non-traditional educational backgrounds. Using a reverse mentoring framework, the traditional mentor–mentee relationship was flipped with students serving as senior partners and their tutors as junior partners. The purpose of this study was to investigate how staff–student relations could be strengthened by gaining a better understanding of one another's perspectives. The concept of institutional habitus provided a theoretical framework within which to examine disparities in mentor–mentee cultural understanding. Using a mixed approach to data collection, composite narratives were constructed. They revealed subtle cultural mismatches between the positions of mentor and mentee. The study speculates that by gaining a better understanding and appreciation of students' habitus, more inclusive teaching practises can be developed to ensure the inclusion of all students. The study proposes a way to measure the relatedness between countries and movies (movie—country relatedness density) and to test whether this relatedness is an important factor in predicting the popularity of a movie in a certain country. The results show that both movie—country relatedness density and movie ubiquity (i.e., popularity across many countries) are positively associated with a movie appearing in a country's top 20 list even after considering other covariates. Based on these findings, we suggest an OTT (Over-the-tops) movie launching strategy with regard to movie—country relatedness density for both global and local OTT companies. Our study contributes to a growing body of research on movie consumption patterns and provides insights into the factors that determine a movie's success on a global scale. The importance of cultural similarity in adopting films and television shows is widely recognized, but the concept of movie—country compatibility is introduced to take into account the content attributes that cannot be explained by cultural differences. The results suggest that movies that are related to other popular movies in a given country and movies that are popular across many countries are more likely to appear in a country's top 20 list. The study aimed to explore the peculiarities of audiovisual text translation into Ukrainian, with a focus on dubbing, and to determine the role of cross-linguistic and cross-cultural differences in audiovisual translation (herein - AVT) didactics. The research used a comparative analysis of the biographical drama "The Queen" (2006) and its dubbed version in Ukrainian to identify essential translation features. The study found that AVT involves the translator's cognitive processing of textual matter, requiring linguistic competence in two languages and acquiring strategies linked to semantic analysis and synthesis. The study demonstrated that structural, semantic, and stylistic features are specific to the film genre and dictate the choice of translation transformations, which include contextual and synonymic substitutions, omission, amplification, permutation, antonymous, and descriptive translation. The comparative analysis of dubbed dialogues in "The Queen" (2006) can help students learn different translation techniques, improve their language skills, understand cultural differences, and identify improvement areas. The ability to decode nonverbal cues is essential for effective cross-cultural communication. Despite the significance of nonverbal communication, research in this area has primarily focused on spoken language. This is particularly problematic during indirect communication, where there is a discrepancy between the surface meaning and the true intention (e.g., "Well, there is still room for improvement in your writing skills"). Misinterpretation of nonverbal cues during indirect communication can impede the decoding of true intention and potentially create hostile situations. The present study investigated cross-cultural differences in the use of nonverbal cues in decoding indirect messages. British and Chinese raters watched silent video clips and identified the types of replies from models of their own and the other culture. Results revealed that British raters were able to recognize indirect replies from British models but not from Chinese models above chance level, whereas Chinese raters were able to recognize indirect replies from models of both cultures above chance level. Furthermore, British raters showed higher accuracy and confidence in identifying indirect replies from British models than Chinese models. In contrast, Chinese raters were equally skilled and confident in identifying indirect replies from both British and Chinese models. Additionally, British and Chinese raters employed different nonverbal cues to recognize indirect replies from models of their respective cultures. These findings underscore the importance of cross-cultural differences in identifying indirect replies through nonverbal communication and provide insights to enhance intercultural communication between British and Chinese individuals. In this article, we unpack how ideologies of ethnonationalism and multiculturalism in the Australian and Japanese contexts present tensions in self-identity and national belonging for youth of mixed Japanese and Australian background. With the aim of furthering our understanding of multiculturalism and its place in Australia, we investigate the complex ways in which these individuals are positioned in-between such ostensibly antithetical ideologies in their transnational lives to provide unique insight into a little studied community in Australia. To do so, we draw on interview data conducted with youth aged 18 to 25 who live in Australia or Japan and are the child of one ethnically Japanese and non-Japanese parent. Our findings demonstrate that multiculturalism in Australia encourages a sense of belonging and community by attributing meaning towards the ubiquity of ethnic, racial and cultural differences in urban Australian spaces. However, feelings of inclusivity or belongingness which derive from a sense of multiculturalism are often overshadowed by discourses of ethnonationalism, such as 'whiteness' or 'Japaneseness', which contradict and unsettle their mixed identities as people of Japanese and Australian backgrounds. In 1968, Equatorial Guinea's emergence as an independent nation signaled a pivotal chapter in Spain's national identity, deeply grounded on an imperial narrative. Around this juncture, Leandro Mbomio was etching his mark on Spain's cultural milieu as a sculptor. His success and persona reflected the image, voice, and thought the Francoist state sought in its former African subjects. Amid Spain's stringent media censorship, the official narrative that emerges from Mbomio's career is captivating. He was celebrated as "the black Picasso" and deemed emblematic of Black culture in Spain. We vary greatly in our perception of risk, not just because of differences between risks themselves, but also because of individual, contextual and cultural differences too. To better understand and predict responses to risk, we need to (a) integrate these components, combining approaches from different psychological disciplines and (b) also consider risk tolerance – how individuals trade-off between risks and benefits. We therefore developed an ICONS (individual, contextual, cognitive, social) framework; using it across two empirical studies (n = 4228) to examine how individuals perceive and respond to the quotidian risks associated with consumer products. Three dimensions underlined risk perceptions: benefits, dread and individual responsibility. Risk tolerance was typically predicted by interactions between individual (demographic, cultural worldview, personality) and contextual (product type/category, harm information) factors. In turn, perceived dread, benefits and individual differences shaped how likely participants were to communicate risk information. Our results demonstrate for the first time how the interaction between individual, cognitive (risk tolerance, intensity), contextual, and social (risk communication) factors is key to understanding and predicting risk perceptions. Together, our findings help explain why societal responses to risks are often difficult to predict and have implications for the spread, and amplification, of risk information. This paper examines issues of gender relations within the context of dominant patriarchy as represented in Samobaba's Yorùbá Bollywood comedy skits. Seun Shamsudeen, popularly known as Samobaba, has produced several audio-visual skits, clipped from Indian films (also known as 'Bollywood'), therefore generating intercultural dialogues for his skits. In these skits, dialogue in Yorùbá language is grafted on verbal and gestural communications in the Indian film pre-text. While the paper engages the gender question in five selected texts on his Instagram platform, its reading of the skits is undergirded by the framework of appropriation, especially in the recent sense of the theory advanced by Matthias Krings in African Appropriation: Cultural Differences, Mimesis and Media. The jocular elements of his comedy are made more visible through the appropriation aesthetics which in turn become instruments through which the subject of gender is brought to the fore. In the end, the paper submits that Samobaba's Yorùbá Bollywood is a projection of digital imaginaries that deserve further scholarly attention. This is because, apart from its entertainment potentials, it provides another platform through which gender relations are interrogated and, in the process, patriarchy is contested and sometimes subverted. While conventional terrorism has long been associated with enhanced support for surveillance, scholars have not determined whether variation in the type and outcome of terror attacks, including those emanating from cyberspace, influences public support for these policies. Further, existing studies typically examine public opinion in a single country, thereby failing to investigate cross-national trends in support for surveillance. In this article, we outline a theoretical relationship between cyberattacks and support for surveillance measures and then, through survey experiments conducted in the United States, United Kingdom, and Israel, explore whether variation in both the type (conventional or cyberterrorism) and outcome (non-lethal or lethal outcomes) of attacks influences support for a range of surveillance tactics. We find that while participants do not base their support for surveillance on attack type or outcome and do not differentiate between surveillance tactics when formulating their preferences, there are considerable cross-national differences in support. Participants from Israel generally responded more favorably to all forms of surveillance, independent of experimental treatment, with British respondents demonstrating high levels of support for CCTV cameras. American respondents, however, were generally less supportive of surveillance measures across treatments, with the differences being most notable in their relative reluctance to support the use of CCTV cameras. Cultural differences may influence the psychosocial adaptation to prolonged isolation and confinement in extreme environments. Recent results showed that the temporal pattern of mood changes may also be affected by cultural differences. The aim of the study was to gain deeper insight into the structure and temporal patterns of group-related themes mentioned in the diaries of Antarctic winteroverers in two different stations with different national and organizational backgrounds. The diaries of the corresponding 8-8 French and British crew members of the Concordia and Halley VI research stations were subjected to content analysis. Method. A total of 18324 sentences were coded. In the first phase of the analysis, we identified 5 major thematic groups (Self focus, Group focus, Antarctica focus, Outworld focus, and Castoff sentences). One-third of these sentences were Group Focus, which were classified into 4 code groups, depending on whether the sentences referred to Experienced or Observed Comfort or Discomfort in the ingroup, respectively. These 4 code groups were subject to further analyses to test whether each code cluster showed a significant difference between British and French winteroverers during the 4 quarters of the mission. The Q3 phenomenon was also investigated. Results. Throughout all four quarters, the British crewmembers used significantly more Experienced Comfort sentences, while the French expressed significantly more Observed Discomfort sentences. Regarding the temporal patterns, the amount of Experienced Comfort sentences was significantly lower in the French diaries compared to the British diaries in the third quarter of the mission. Conclusions. Content analysis detected the impact of cultural differences on the composition and temporal pattern of social experiences of winterovering crews. It thus can diagnose and predict the psychodynamics of groups in isolated, confined, and extreme (ICE) environments, such as polar stations or long-duration missions in space. • We studied linguistic markers of group dynamics of Antarctic winteroverer crews. • Sentence-based content analysis was done on diaries of French and British crews. • The British crew expressed more Experienced Comfort and less Observed Discomfort. • Compared to the British, the French crew showed less Experienced Comfort during Q3. • Results show cultural differences between the two groups studied. This paper provides a comprehensive comparison of the sources, states of existence, and fundamental principles and purposes of the Christian and Chinese Buddhist perspectives on human life, focusing specifically on the realm of bioethics. It places special emphasis on teachings about God's creation and dependent origination, original sin and Buddhist causality, as well as love and compassion. Despite the significant geographic distance between Christianity and Chinese Buddhism, the dialogue highlights potential cultural differences and interpretations. It also demonstrates mutual acceptance and the process of redefining one's own identity. Religious bioethics greatly benefits from a comprehensive study of various religions from around the world. Regular and sustained contact with speakers of other languages might offer members of multilingual societies opportunities to develop cultural awareness through interactions with diverse individuals. This study examines how the language awareness of individuals in a highly multilingual setting can act as a resource to support their learning about culture and development of cultural awareness. Participants were students, faculty, and alumni of an English teacher preparation program in Central Java, a community where Javanese, Indonesian, and English are used regularly. Data sources included class observations, interviews, and journal entries. The research participants appeared to be using their Javanese language awareness as a resource in two ways as they discussed and learned about culture: by using the Javanese language as a marker of cultural difference, and by connecting to structural and sociolinguistic aspects of Javanese, notably the use of indirect communication and the appropriate speech level. Educators working with students in both multilingual and monolingual settings could draw on these findings by purposefully building on students' language awareness as a resource to help them develop cultural awareness. The history of the Jewish press can be studied both as a mirror and as a motor. The former looks back on the relationship between history and culture. It lends itself to the purpose of curation and retrieval and implies an agreed Jewish historiography. The latter method is forward looking. It suggests a more holistic approach, reaching beyond the identification of individual titles, and encourages a mapping of the overall Jewish press landscape in terms of cultural and economic capital, marginal initiatives, cross referencing, and the identification of trends. This article embarks on the latter approach. Presupposing that public discourses do not just reflect or represent social entities and alliances, but also construct or constitute them, I focus on the visionary character of Jewish periodicals and on their transformative function. This survey explores Swiss mental health professionals', users', and relatives' opinions on re-naming schizophrenia exploiting Switzerland's specific multilingualism to examine possible effects of linguistic and microcultural differences on the issue. Opinions on 'schizophrenia' were collected using a self-rated online questionnaire incl. Freetext answers available in the three main Swiss languages, German, French and Italian. It was distributed to the main professional and self-help organizations in Switzerland between June and October 2021. Overall, 449 persons completed the questionnaire, 263 in German, 172 in French and 14 in Italian. Of the total sample, 339 identified as mental health professionals, 81 as relatives and 29 as users. Considering the whole sample, almost half favored a name-change with a significant difference between stakeholder- and between language groups. Also, the name 'schizophrenia' was evaluated more critically than the diagnostic concept. Qualitative analysis of freetext answers showed a highly heterogenous argumentation, but no difference between language groups. Our results suggest the attitude towards re-naming might itself be subject to (micro)cultural difference, and they highlight the nature of 'schizophrenia' as not only a scientific, but also a linguistic and cultural object. This paper describes the implementation of curricula for Liberia's first-ever psychiatry training programme in 2019 and the actions of the only two Liberian psychiatrists in the country at the time in developing and executing a first-year postgraduate psychiatry training programme (i.e. residency) with support from international collaborators. It explores cultural differences in training models among collaborators and strategies to synergise them best. It highlights the assessment of trainees' (residents') basic knowledge on entry into the programme and how it guided immediate and short-term priority teaching objectives, including integrated training in neuroscience and neurology. Prolonged media exposure after collective crises is widely shown to have adverse effects on people's mental health. Do these effects show variation across different countries? In the present study, we compared the link between media exposure related to COVID-19 and mental health-related outcomes in the United States and Italy, two countries with high levels of early COVID-19 prevalence. Participants matched on age and gender in the United States (n = 415) and Italy (n = 442) completed assessments of media exposure, stress, anxiety, COVID-19 worry, and other variables shortly after the first wave of infections in 2020. COVID-19 related media exposure predicted higher levels of stress, anxiety, and COVID-19 worry, net of the effects of neuroticism, political identification, and demographics. Moreover, COVID-19 related media exposure interacted with country to predict more stress and COVID-19 worry in the United States than in Italy. This research analyses the "word of the year 2022": Permacrisis. Through the Semantic Differential tool (Osgood in Am Anthropol 66: 171-200, 1964), 16 words were investigated among those most searched for in Google Search in the second half of 2022. Central questions are: What are the cultural differences in permacrisis connotation among five countries (Italy, France, United Kingdom, Germany and Poland)? What are the cultural differences in how permacrisis is connotated? How do different political orientations relate to the concepts of Politics and Democracy regarding permacrisis? The research showed how the Permacrisis is strongly linked to concepts such as Nuclear weapons, World War III and the COVID-19 virus. On a sample of 1273, the study showed evident cultural differences in permacrisis connotation, such as the emphasis on Weapons by the Italians or the Economic Crisis by the Germans. Statistical analysis reveals different anxieties: i.e. Italians fear losing their strength, the French anger about not being heard, while the British are anxious to remain socially isolated. A contrast between the concepts of Politics and Democracy was analysed on the sample's declarations of belonging to political orientations such as Conservatives, Christian democrats, Social democrats, Greens and the Left. Finally, the concept of Climate Crisis has been analysed, which results in the Semantic Differential, against any prevision, placed in a more peripheral orbit than the concepts associated with Permacrisis. Impressive progress has been made in developing companion Socially Interactive Agents (SIAs) that provide companionship and reduce loneliness. However, recent works focus on analyzing multimodal feedback in Answer part but ignore Question part. Furthermore, research on SIAs is primarily based on English, which poses a challenge for Chinese SIAs because of cultural differences between English and Chinese. Therefore, we introduce a Chinese Natural Audiovisual Multimodal Database (CNAMD) corpus, the first and largest freely available Chinese multimodal database for multi-person interaction, containing 48 hours of videos and annotations across eight modalities. Using CNAMD, we analyze the characteristics of vocal-verbal, audio, behavioral, and multimodal combinations during questioning, test the performance of six baselines on three tasks, and propose improvements for processing daily Chinese data. The present findings will help designers consider Chinese customs and language when designing Chinese SIAs, making them more suitable for the Chinese cultural context and users. What has happened to the ambitions of feminist diplomacy expressed a decade ago? Although feminist foreign policy is on the rise in the United States, and, globally, has scored important victories within multilateral institutions such as the United Nations, feminists seem to have scaled back earlier ambitions to save women everywhere from patriarchy. In the words of Barbie, they have retreated to their 'own pink world.' We argue that the seeds of current challenges go back more than a decade to feminist diplomacy's own knowledge practices. The tactics that feminist diplomats at that time deployed to manage the feminist postmodern predicament – what we term the culture bog – can on one level be understood within the repertoire of technical moves that define diplomatic practice. Yet, in a deeper way, these tactics violated the ethos and commitments of both feminism and diplomacy. Otherness in contemporary cross-cultural management (CCM) studies often emerges from migration and refugee movements, with ensuing integration challenges. In this context, 'difference' is perceived as being more problematic than enriching, and this makes it difficult to contribute to integration via a Positive Organizational Scholarship. Introducing the sociology of conflict, I propose that the success of a positive cross-cultural management engagement with Otherness should not be measured in terms of the degree to which difference is overcome and integrated, but in terms of the degree to which more parties engage more deeply with relevant conflict and friction. Investigating Otherness by means of a sociology of conflict approach thus radically changes the assumptions, research agendas, practices, presumed goals and potential responsibilities of a contemporary cross-cultural management theory and practice: deeper conflict signifies better integration, and assuming otherwise is both unrealistic and mis-fitting. I exemplify this reverse logic, and how to employ it, with a discussion of the 'refugee crisis' and the dynamics of 'migration background' in Germany. How much, and in what ways, do cultural ideas contribute to understanding cross‐national differences in the extent of long‐term care (LTC) policy marketisation? We argue that differences in cultural ideas in the political sphere about 'ideal' ways of organising the provision of care shed light on these differences, relatively independently of the governing parties' positions on the left/right spectrum. Our comparative case study of two conservative welfare states, Germany and Austria, supports this argument. LTC policy marketisation in the mid‐1990s was, in both cases, based on left‐libertarian ideas. While these ideas gained strong political support from parties across the left/right spectrum in Austria, they were combined with etatist ideas in Germany, resulting in a substantially lower potential for marketisation in Germany's LTC policy. Our study also shows that, by contrast with neo‐liberal ideas, left‐libertarian ideas address care recipients' self‐determination and divert attention away from social problems associated with LTC marketisation. The influence of British and Chinese culture on the viewing of paintings from Western and East Asian traditions was explored in an old/new discrimination task. Accuracy data were considered alongside signal detection measures of sensitivity and bias. The results showed participant culture and painting tradition interacted but only with respect to response bias and not sensitivity. Eye movements were also recorded during encoding and discrimination. Paintings were split into regions of interest defined by faces, or the theme and context to analyze the eye movement data. With respect to the eye movement data, the results showed that a match between participant culture and painting tradition increased the viewing of faces in paintings at the expense of the viewing of other locations, an effect interpreted as a manifestation of the Other Race Effect on the viewing of paintings. There was, however, no evidence of broader influence of culture on the eye movements made to paintings as might be expected if culture influenced the allocation of attention more generally. For decades researchers have explored the link between the Big Five personality traits and job performance, conducting studies across various contexts and sectors. The study seeks to test the link between the Big Five dimensions of personality and job performance in Türkiye, for which an integration of 38 studies involving 18,021 participants was performed. By using psychometric meta-analysis, the study compares and evaluates the similarities and differences among the Türkiye studies and the broader literature on this topic. Additionally, this study is among the first to address the moderating effect of evaluators and sectors on the relationship between Big Five personality traits and job performance dimensions. The findings suggest that there are differences between the Turkish studies and the existing literature, which could be explained by cultural differences and social norms specific to collectivist countries like Türkiye. Members of some legislatures enjoy long political careers, whereas elsewhere turnover is rampant. This variation is consequential since high-incumbency assemblies may facilitate legislative expertise at the expense of social representation. We explore cross-national differences in re-election (incumbency) rates by identifying 'supply' conditions such as legislative resources that benefit incumbents as well as 'demand' conditions such as political corruption that affect voters' willingness to re-elect incumbents. We hypothesize that legislative perquisites help incumbents win re-election, but only if there is relatively high public confidence in politics, as reflected in low corruption levels. We tested our argument using OLS and instrumental variable regression and new global data on sixty-eight democracies (2000–18) covering 288 elections and over 55,000 legislators. We found that legislative resources help incumbents get re-elected only under relatively low levels of political corruption. Although the determinants of films' box office performance have been extensively examined in the past, there is a gap in the literature with regard to how the mediation effect of age ratings for movies on the relationship between content elements and box office performance differs across cultures. Through a moderated mediation analysis of films released in 111 countries in the past 100 years (between 1921 and 2020), this paper finds that when there are wider cultural distances between the home and host countries, content with higher levels of violence and morally loaded behaviors reap greater box office revenues in host countries. However, in total, movies with higher elements of violent content rather than content related to morally loaded behaviors contribute to high box office revenues in the international film market. Purpose: This study examined social problem solving as a hypothesized mediator of the association between loneliness and psychological ill-being (viz., depressive symptoms & hopelessness) in American and Chinese adults. Methods: A total of 320 (229 female & 91 male) American adults and 357 (194 male & 163 female) Chinese adults participated in the present study. Results: Mediation testing for social problem solving as a hypothesized mechanism accounting for the positive association between loneliness and psychological ill-being identified differences between Americans and Chinese. For Americans, the presence of a negative problem orientation was consistently found to partially mediate the association between loneliness and psychological ill-being. In contrast, for Chinese, the absence of a positive problem orientation was consistently found to partially mediate the association between loneliness and psychological ill-being. For both groups, no evidence was found for the importance of any of the problem-solving styles in accounting for psychological ill-being. Conclusion: These findings not only indicate that how adults perceive problems matters more than how they approach solving them, but also point to important cultural differences regarding which problem orientation is most involved for understanding the positive association between loneliness and psychological ill-being in Easterners, compared to Westerners. Given the deficiencies of traditional government capacity indicators and cultural factors (e.g., individualism) in explaining the discrepancies of different agents' responses to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19) pandemic, the present study proposed and examined the role of neoliberalism, a novel cultural tradition of knowledge emphasizing the principles of free markets and self‐governance, as an additional explanation of the discrepancies in the governmental and individual responses to the pandemic. Analyzing policy responses of 106 nations and personal responses from 105,203 individuals in 104 nations during the first wave of the pandemic, we found that nation‐level neoliberalism (delineated by the economic freedom index) negatively predicted the nonlinear trajectories of government policy responses to contain the pandemic. Specifically, in more neoliberal countries, stringent containment policy responses showed a sharper decline in the later stage of the first wave of the pandemic. Moreover, nation‐level neoliberalism negatively predicted individuals' pandemic‐protective attitudes and behaviors. All these effects are independent of and incremental to those of nation‐level individualism. In conclusion, this study sheds light on how neoliberalism could lead to negative consequences during large‐scale, long‐lasting public threats, offering practical guidance for adjusting public crisis management in the future. Objective: We investigated heterosexual and nonheterosexual Chinese international students' views about cooperative marriages and romantic relationships. Background: Cooperative marriages and romantic relationships are those in which two partners, one or both of whom self‐identify as nonheterosexual, consent and pretend to be a heterosexual couple as a means of relieving social pressures that require involvement in heterosexual relationships (Kam, 2013). Method: In total, 265 Chinese international students (Mage = 23 years) participated in an online survey; 210 self‐identified as heterosexual and 55 as members of sexual minority groups. Results: Students who identified as members of sexual minority groups reported few aspirations and unfavorable attitudes toward cooperative marriages and relationships. Of the students identifying as members of sexual minority groups, those who envisioned future residence in foreign countries reported fewer aspirations for such relationships than their nonheterosexual peers who anticipated returning to China. Moreover, regardless of sexual identities, students who reported higher endorsement of traditional cultural values held less negative attitudes toward such relationships. For students who identified as members of sexual minority groups, stronger acculturation to the U.S. culture was associated with more negative attitudes toward such relationships. Conclusion: Our study found that Chinese international students identifying as members of sexual minority groups held unfavorable views about cooperative marriage and it highlighted the role of transnational mobility and cultures in these views. Implications: Our study implied the importance of cultural responsiveness in how health practitioners could better support individuals of diverse sexual identities and cultural backgrounds. Does the provision of state subsidies to political parties reduce their involvement in corruption? Existing research provides inconclusive evidence on this relationship, perhaps because cross‐national studies on public funding and corruption are often limited by regulation‐based indexes of political financing and by very general corruption measures. In this study, we use focused measures for both phenomena to investigate whether more generous public funding reduces party corruption. Our independent variable reflects the actual cash amount of budgetary subventions provided to parties in twenty‐seven post‐communist countries. Our dependent variable of party‐centered corruption represents the share of firms considerably affected by the informal payments made by businesses to political parties and parliamentarians to influence their decisions. We find that a higher level of state subsidies is associated with a reduction in corruption; its effect diminishes as funding increases, and its impact on corruption is lagged. However, there is a wide interval of uncertainty around these results. Prolonged grief disorder (PGD) is now included as a diagnosis in international classification systems. Most research on PGD is based on Western populations, but first data from non-Western countries have recently become available. Little is still known about country-related effects on PGD's prevalence. Determining possible causes of variations in the prevalence of PGD as defined by DSM-5-TR and ICD-11 within and between countries. We retrieved data from 24 prevalence studies, the World Bank and the 2022 World Risk Report. Negative binomial regressions were used to explore methodological, loss-related and country context characteristics as predictors of PGD. The average rate of PGD was calculated using random effects models. The included studies comprised 34 samples from 16 countries (20,347 participants). Non-probability sampling and older mean age of the sample as well as lower country vulnerability were associated with higher PGD rates. The average PGD prevalence was 13 % (95 % CI [11, 22]), varying from 5 % (95 % CI [3, 11]) in probability to 16 % (95 % CI [13, 25]) in non-probability samples. Samples from Europe and North America were overrepresented. For about half of the countries, data were available from only one sample. While confirming the importance of studies' methodological quality, the results show that PGD is of public health relevance around the world, but especially common in less vulnerabled countries with better access to daily necessities and healthcare services, highlighting sociocultural impacts on grief processing. The goal of this work is to put forward a pragmatic and translational framework for analysing target texts (TT) and source texts (ST) containing conversational implicatures that lead to pragmatic ambiguity. Ambiguity, sensu lato, is deemed to be related to indeterminacy and vagueness. Nevertheless, in the strict sense, ambiguity is understood as 'more than a single processing instruction for a given utterance'. More specifically, pragmatic ambiguity arises whenever differences in cultural conventions between SL speakers and TL speakers lead to differences in the existence, meaning and salience of implicatures among ST and TT. Using real translation cases selected from a purpose‐built corpus containing fiction written and oral texts, we show which pragmatic ambiguities translators come across, and how translation techniques are used, either to maintain ambiguity or to select one intended processing instruction. Under-representation of women in policing is a global phenomenon, with considerable commonality in barriers to career success and differential career experiences compared to men. Through a comparative analysis utilising unique survey and interview data with female and male senior police leaders in England and Wales, this paper considers whether cultural and structural barriers persist and how they are experienced by gender; examines the challenges encountered en route to senior rank; and considers how similarities or differences by gender impact upon careers. The findings are considered to have world-wide relevance, demonstrating that those officers achieving seniority tend to share similar career experiences whatever their gender, particularly at the highest ranks. Leadership styles emerge as homogenous with agentic traits and traditional styles persisting. Costs to achieving higher rank appear to differ by gender however, and access to senior rank is revealed as dependent upon engaging in traditional behaviours including a long-hours culture and ensuring family does not reduce work capacity, effectively promoting a 'child-tax' upon female policing leaders. It thus appears that a widespread and global tacit acceptance of policing as a male-dominated profession endures, impacting on female advancement compared to men. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In an expanded cultural perspective, the process of transculturation from the past to the present is a cumulative and formalized order and sophisticated approach that has an impact on societies. Amidst multidimensional cultural differences, transculturation formulates cultural phenomena between self and other for societies' quest for sharing, and provides temporal responses to people's demands and needs. Soft power plays a prominent role in shaping the transculturation process. In the concept of transculturation, universal soft power instruments bring the distinctive qualities of human beings into question and the established traditions, practices, values and beliefs of society are transformed by the networks and tools surrounding the cultural space. Soft power instruments that constitute universal values challenge traditional social despotism and construct non-ethnocentric images and notions of social and intellectual unity that belong to universal humanity and help legitimize universal identity. In this context, the transculturation process and soft power, which carry out transformation processes, create a sense of being the majority in people, and the universal values that permeate the masses and the universal needs brought about by the environmental conditions create a representation in societies. Moreover, the acceptance of universal values creates a global synthesis in societies and the characteristics of representation are reflected in practical life. This article examines the role of soft power in the concept of transculturation, discusses transculturation processes and soft power instruments with examples from history, and finally analyzes issues related to identity and universal identity legitimization and non-ethnocentric image. Recent findings suggest that stigma and camouflaging contribute to mental health difficulties for autistic individuals, however, this evidence is largely based on UK samples. While studies have shown cross-cultural differences in levels of autism-related stigma, it is unclear whether camouflaging and mental health difficulties vary across cultures. Hence, the current study had two aims: (1) to determine whether significant relationships between autism acceptance, camouflaging, and mental health difficulties replicate in a cross-cultural sample of autistic adults, and (2) to compare these variables across cultures. To fulfil these aims, 306 autistic adults from eight countries (Australia, Belgium, Canada, Japan, New Zealand, South Africa, the United Kingdom, and the United States) completed a series of online questionnaires. We found that external acceptance and personal acceptance were associated with lower levels of depression but not camouflaging or stress. Higher camouflaging was associated with elevated levels of depression, anxiety, and stress. Significant differences were found across countries in external acceptance, personal acceptance, depression, anxiety, and stress, even after controlling for relevant covariates. Levels of camouflaging also differed across countries however this effect became non-significant after controlling for the covariates. These findings have significant implications, identifying priority regions for anti-stigma interventions, and highlighting countries where greater support for mental health difficulties is needed. This article assesses the impact of household composition and intermarriage on foreign-born women's labor force participation in Japan, Sweden, and the United States. Whereas previous literature on immigrant integration and intermarriage has treated social integration and labor force participation as tightly interlinked phenomena, we use new and previously unavailable data on Japan and the literature on institutional gender inequality to show that, in some cases, social integration through intermarriage might actually result in lower labor force participation for foreign-born women. We argue that the degree of institutional support for immigrants and families directly affects foreign-born women's labor force participation in the anticipated direction for each country. We argue that these cross-national differences are largely an outcome of differences in the degree of institutional support for working women and families within the host society and help clarify instances where social integration might have negative implications for labor force participation. These findings highlight the importance of accounting for both gender and social context when assessing the role intermarriage plays in receiving country immigrant integration. Alongside the concept of risk-taking (RT), the construct of creativity often appears in scientific literature. However, the study of their relationship has been conducted unsystematically, with both theoretical (definition of the constructs) and methodological (different assessment methods) difficulties. Some studies consider risk as a predictor of creativity, while others consider the opposite direction, which often leads to contrasting results. The present systematic review was conducted using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines to systematize results on this topic and investigate reasons for these conflicting results. Fifteen studies were included from an initial N = 1009 (from three scientific databases). Theoretical and methodological considerations that may explain the mixed results have been investigated in depth. They can be summarized as follows: 1) the difficulty in clearly defining the multidimensional constructs of creativity and risk, 2) the heterogeneity of the instruments used in the studies, and 3) the possible effect of cultural differences. Despite this, much of the evidence in the literature has supported the hypothesis that people with lower creative ability tend to avoid risky situations and decisions, preferring the status quo, while people with higher creative skills tend not to flinch from challenging situations. Kim and Markus (1999; Study 3) found that 74% of European Americans selected a pen with an uncommon (vs. common) color, whereas only 24% of East Asians made such a choice, highlighting a pronounced cross-cultural difference in the extent to which people opt for originality or make majority-based choices. The present high-powered study (N = 729) conceptually replicates the results from Kim and Markus (1999; Study 3), although our effect size (r =.12) is significantly weaker than that of the original study (r =.52). Interestingly, a larger proportion of Chinese, but not US, participants selected a pen with an uncommon color now than during the original study. Thus, our findings indicate a potential transmission of certain Western values to cultures traditionally characterized by collectivism and conformity, likely exacerbated by the globalization of mass media and the rapid economic growth in many East Asian countries. Inclusive supervision is an approach to supervision that prioritizes multicultural competencies and an ethic of inclusion. Inclusivity in doctoral (or PhD) supervision is of key significance due to the collaborative nature of the relationship between supervisors and supervisees. Scant research has been conducted that considers the multiple, intersectional influences and their impact within this relationship. This study employs a rapid review method to synthesize findings on the research evidence encapsulating inclusive doctoral supervision. A search of academic literature spanning the last ten years (2013–2023) led to the inclusion of nine empirical, qualitative research studies on inclusive supervision. A synthesis of the findings resulted in five key challenges to inclusive supervision that diverse students face: power dynamics and feedback, a lack of belonging and support, a racial lens on academic competence, (mis)understandings of cultural differences, and communication and language barriers. In discussing these findings, we employ an intersectional lens and introduce a conceptual framework for an inclusive collaboration between supervisors and supervisees. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Wu-Yue, meaning five-mountains, refers to five sacred mountains in China. The sacredness of this cultural landscape was manifested through the religious activities centered in those mountains and the state rituals of imperial China. This sacredness became recognized in the global context in 2010, when one mountain became the physical context of a newly inscribed World Heritage Cultural Site that purported to be at "The Center of Heaven and Earth." However, the sacred mountain itself was deliberately excluded from the narratives justifying the value of this heritage. Drawing upon archival research and limited fieldwork, this paper argues that although both Wu-Yue and "The Center of Heaven and Earth" are manipulated cultural concepts heavily charged with political agendas, significant differences exist between the processes of making these two heritages, the players involved in such processes, and the consequences of the socio-politically produced space. Wu-Yue, representing the ideological construct of the state power, was gradually established and constantly redefined over 3000 years through evolving ritual performances and cultural practices. In contrast, "The Center of Heaven and Earth" was created between the 2009 and 2010 sessions of the World Heritage Committee, yet with an embedded new political agenda: modern China, represented by a historical capital of imperial China, has become the center of the known world, from which a new global power is ascending. Despite decades of urging from non-Western nations, the development of protection for Traditional Cultural Expression on an international level has been slow. The last three decades have brought broader international awareness of the profits made off of traditional art, style, and symbols, which has propelled the efforts to legally recognize and protect the intellectual property rights of historically marginalized people. This Note argues that while establishing domestic laws that protect the unique intellectual property of Indigenous groups is important, true protection cannot exist without joint efforts to ensure that provided protections can be enjoyed by all members of a community, regardless of which side of the border they reside on. To fulfill the obligations accepted by the United States and Mexico through the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, the two nations must develop an international agreement that establishes a cooperative system that provides transnational protection for their shared Indigenous populations. Live conversations and writing play an important role in ethnographic research that seeks to develop understanding across cultural differences. Both forms of communication need not remain distinct: written dialogue can develop critical thought while foregrounding the shared contexts and relational impetuses of communication across cultures. Set against the background of recent styles in ethnographic writing about and with Yolŋu people, this article extends from conversations about wata (wind), exploring collaborative practices (music performance and teaching) and approaches to writing ethnography that respond to a core quality of wind as a medium that connects. Wata is a significant theme within manikay (public ceremonial song) that connects Wägilak with their ancestral lands, even as it blows through the country of other groups, allowing new relationships and understandings to be formed. Giving rise to concerns of connection, difference, and movement, wata is a significant theme for considering the ways narrative traditions can shape relationality and give impetus to intellectual inquiry. The Black and Third World Marxist tradition have demonstrated that colonialism is inseparable from historical accounts of global capitalism. This paper contributes to that project through an account of heterochronic capitalist time by indexing both its uneven incorporation of socio-ecological temporalities and its disciplining of enslaved people. To illustrate this, I examine how Western industrial temporal relations are generative of, and imposed through, its conflictual relations with Indigenous Taíno and enslaved West African socio-ecological forms of time within the Caribbean sugar complex. In addition, I emphasize that despite colonial capitalism seeking to merge African and Indigenous socio-ecological temporal knowledge into abstract labour, it is never a totalizing process. In effect, while colonial capitalism wields various techniques to incorporate Indigenous and African life worlds, there are always phenomenological remainders of cultural temporal difference that do not reproduce the logic of capital. Highlighting two contrasting postcolonial readings of Marx's notion of subsumption, I argue that we can index the existence of a multiplicity of non-linear and cyclical forms of eternal time that comingle and link past, present and futurity. Inscribing their own emergent dialectics, however, I caution that preserved forms of temporal difference can potentially be taken up in service to reactionary political projects. This paper performs a critical qualitative inquiry exploring supervision pedagogies utilising duoethnography as both methodology and conceptual framing. We begin the inquiry by reflecting upon our social and cultural identities and our evolving supervisor/supervisee-colleague-friend relationship. Our critical dialogue then shifts to scrutinising our supervision experiences. Topics of relationships, ethics, power effects, cultural differences, students' anxieties and self-doubt, and institutional protocols emerged during our conversations. We analyse our narratives in light of literature on supervision pedagogy, duoethnography, and some theoretical notions drawn from critical multiculturalism and the work of Foucault and Bourdieu. In the current context of neoliberal incursions into university modalities, it is our intention that our dialogue might promote a refocusing on the need for critical socially-just supervision pedagogies, and we invite you to join us in this critical dialogic inquiry.
