Micron-scale zero-valent iron (ZVI)-based material has been applied for hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) decontamination in wastewater treatment and groundwater remediation, but the passivation problem has limited its field application. In this study, we combined aluminum chloride solution with ZVI (pcZVI-AlCl3) to enhance Cr(VI) removal behavior under aerobic conditions. The optimal pre-corrosion conditions were found to be 2.5 g/L ZVI, 0.5 mM AlCl3, and a 4 h preconditioning period. Different kinds of techniques were applied to detect the properties of preconditioned ZVI and corrosion products. The 57Fe Mössbauer spectra showed that proportions of ZVI, Fe3O4, and FeOOH in pcZVI-AlCl3 were 49.22%, 34.03%, and 16.76%, respectively. The formation of Al(OH)3 in the corrosion products improved its pHpzc (point of zero charge) for Cr(VI) adsorption. Continuous-flow experiments showed its great potential for Cr(VI) removal in field applications. The ZVI and corrosion products showed a synergistic effect in enhancing electron transfer for Cr(VI) removal. The mechanisms underlying Cr(VI) removal by pcZVI-AlCl3 included adsorption, reduction, and precipitation, and the contribution of adsorption was less. Clean up following the wide-area release of a persistent biological agent has the potential to generate significant waste. Waste containing residual levels of biological contaminants may require off-site shipment under the U.S. Department of Transportation's (US DOT) solid waste regulations for Category A infectious agents, which has packaging and size limitations that do not accommodate large quantities. Treating the waste on-site to inactivate the bio-contaminants could alleviate the need for Category A shipping and open the possibility for categorizing the waste as conventional solid waste with similar shipping requirements as municipal garbage. To collect and package waste for on-site treatment, a semi-permeable nonwoven-based fabric was developed. The fabric was designed to contain residual bio-contaminants while providing sufficient permeability for penetration by a gaseous decontamination agent. The nonwoven fabric was tested in two bench-scale experiments. First, decontamination efficacy and gas permeability were evaluated by placing test coupons inoculated with spores of a Bacillus anthracis surrogate inside the nonwoven material. After chlorine dioxide fumigation, the coupons were analyzed for spore viability and results showed a ≥6 Log reduction on all test materials except glass. Second, filters cut from the nonwoven material were tested in parallel with commercially available cellulose acetate filters having a known pore size (0.45 μm) and results demonstrate that the two materials have similar permeability characteristics. Overall, results suggest that the nonwoven material could be used to package waste at the point of generation and then moved to a nearby staging area where it could be fumigated to inactivate bio-contaminants. Objective. This research study investigated the effect of new decontamination protocols on the bonding capacity of saliva-contaminated monolithic zirconia (MZ) ceramics cemented with two different monomer-containing self-adhesive resin cements. Materials and Methods. Standardized tooth preparations (4 mm. axial height) were performed for eighty human maxillary premolars under constant water cooling system. Eighty monolithic zirconia crowns (Whitepeaks Supreme Monolith) (n = 8 / 10 groups) were manufactured by CAD-CAM. Specimens were kept in the artificial saliva at pH = 7.3 for 1 minute at 37°C except control groups. The specimens have not been prealumina blasted and grouped according to cleaning methods and resin cements: control groups (C) (no saliva contamination + GPDM + 4 ‐ META (N) (CN) and 10-MDP (M) containing resin cement (CM), alumina blasted AL + GPDM + 4 ‐ META (ALN) and 10-MDP containing resin cement (ALM), zirconium oxide containing universal cleaning agent (IC) applied + GPDM + 4 ‐ META (N) (ICN) and 10-MDP containing resin cement (ICM), pumice (P) applied + GPDM + 4 ‐ META (PN) and 10-MDP containing resin cement (PM), and air-water spray (AW) applied + GPDM + 4 ‐ META (AWN) and 10-MDP containing resin cement (AWM)). Monobond Plus was applied to all surfaces for 40 seconds before cementation. The thermal cycle was applied at 5,000 cycles after cementation. The crowns were tested in tensile mode at a speed of 1 mm/min. The mode of failure was recorded. SEM examinations were carried out at different magnifications. Data were analyzed using rank-based Kruskal-Wallis and Mann–Whitney tests. Results. No significant differences were found between the surface treatments and between the two types of resin cements. Interaction effects between surface treatments and resin cements were found to be significant by two-way ANOVA analysis. ICM group resulted in significantly better bond strength results compared with CN. ICM was found to result in better bond strength results compared with PM. The combination of universal cleaning agent and 10-MDP containing resin cement had significantly the highest cementation bond strength values. The increasing order of mean tensile bond strength values of decontamination protocols was C < AW < P < AL < IC. The mean tensile bond strength of 10-MDP containing resin cement was slightly higher than GPDM + 4 ‐ META containing resin cement. Conclusions. Universal cleaning agents can be preferred as an efficient cleaning method with 10-MDP-containing cement after saliva contamination for better adhesive bond strength of 4 mm crown preparation height of monolithic zirconia ceramics. RSDL® (Reactive Skin Decontamination Lotion) Kit is approved for decontaminating chemical warfare agents and T-2 fungal toxins. This work aimed to investigate the efficacy of RSDL or water irrigation for sulfuric acid dermal decontamination against untreated control in rabbit models. Rabbits were randomly assigned to Groups 1 (no decontamination), 2 (water) or 3 (RSDL) and exposed to sulfuric acid (0.1 mL/3-4 cm²) for 30 seconds Decontaminants remained on-site for 2 minutes. Decontamination efficacy with RSDL and water were similar. Wound pH was higher and erythema persisted longer after decontamination versus control. Oedema developed by Day 3 and resolved by Day 15 in all groups. Necrosis started by Day 3, and all wounds had necrosis by Day 21. Wound areas following decontamination were significantly smaller than controls. Microscopically, all wounds in all groups had full-thickness epidermal and dermal necrosis. In summary, RSDL and water were similarly effective in reducing wound size and increasing wound pH by Day 3 compared to controls. Histopathology data demonstrated similar tissue injury across all groups and showed no signs of wound healing after exposure RSDL was a reliable decontamination method in the absence of immediate access to water. An efficient removal of the photocatalysts used in the decontamination of water is crucial after its application beside its expected visible light sensitive activities. This study presents the synthesis of magnetically separable CuFe2O4 nanoparticles (CFNPs) with enhanced photoactivity under AM 1.5 G sunlight. A simple two-step process involving co-precipitation and hydrothermal treatment is employed, with subsequent annealing at temperatures from 200 °C to 1000 °C to synthesize the CFNPs. The characteristic features of the highest photoactive tetragonal phase of CFNP are confirmed by powder XRD studies with Rietveld refinement. This scheme strategically controls the growth of a highly photoactive tetragonal phase with predominant (224) facets over other less active facets in cubic CuFe2O4. Mott–Schottky analysis confirms the p -type semiconducting nature of CFNPs. A favourable direct optical band gap of 1.73 eV, as well as photoluminescence emission quenching for visible photons, show that the (224) oriented CFNPs are good photocatalysts in the visible spectrum with demonstrated organic dye degradations, including methylene blue and others. A density functional theory-based approach validates that the adsorption of such dye is thermodynamically more favourable on (224) facets of CuFe2O4 to facilitate the redox action by the excitons. Removal of organic pollutants from wastewater remains a significant challenge. Hence, we report a series of novel MOFs based BixTiy‐BTC photocatalysts synthesized by hydrothermal method for decontamination of 1,1‐Dimethylhydrazine (UDMH). The preparation parameters of MOFs were optimized, the best catalytic performance was achieved by adjusting the Bi/Ti molar ratio to 1 : 3, with Bi1Ti3‐BTC a photocurrent density of 0.35 mA/cm2 was reached. The morphology and composition of the materials were analyzed, titanium doping increased the specific surface area. Bi1Ti3‐BTC was loaded with magnetic nano‐Fe3O4, which prevented agglomeration of Bi1Ti3‐BTC and increased the specific surface area, thus improving photocatalytic activity. The band gap structure of the semiconductor materials was estimated by UV‐Vis and XPS valence band spectra, while the separation efficiency of photogenerated carriers was investigated by photocurrent density and PL (Photoluminescence) spectrum. The photocatalytic degradation rate of UDMH rapidly decreased after addition of EDTA, indicating that h+ was the main active species in the photocatalytic degradation process. The photocatalytic removal efficiency of UDMH with Bi1Ti3‐BTC/Fe3O4 at a concentration of 0.5 g/L reached 97.58 % after illumination for 180 min, and after 210 min near quantitative degradation was observed. Background: Approximately 100,000 anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstructions (ACLRs) occur annually in the United States, and postoperative surgical-site infection is a relatively rare but devastating complication, often leading to graft failure or septic arthritis of the knee, necessitating repeat surgery. Wrapping allografts in vancomycin-soaked gauze has been adopted as a common sterilization technique in the operating room to reduce surgical-site infection; however, identifying effective alternatives to vancomycin has not been extensively pursued. Hypothesis: Tobramycin would be as effective as vancomycin in reducing the concentrations of Staphylococcus epidermidis bacteria on tendon allografts. Study Design: Controlled laboratory study. Methods: S. epidermidis strain ATCC 12228 was inoculated onto the human cadaveric gracilis tendon. The tendons were wrapped in sterile gauze saturated with tobramycin or vancomycin at various experimental concentrations. Bacteria remaining on the tendon were dislodged, serially diluted, and plated for colony counting. Statistical analysis was performed utilizing 2-way analysis of variance testing. Results were considered statistically significant when P <.05. Results: Vancomycin (P =.0001) and tobramycin (P <.0001) reduced bacterial concentration. Tobramycin was found to produce a statistically significant reduction in bacterial concentration at concentrations as low as 0.1 mg/mL (P <.0001 and P =.01 at 10 and 20 minutes), while vancomycin produced a statistically significant reduction at a concentration as low as 2.5 mg/mL (P <.0001 at both 10 and 20 minutes). Conclusion: This study demonstrates that tobramycin is as effective as vancomycin in bacterial concentration reduction but can achieve this reduction level at lower doses. Further studies clarifying the biomechanical and cytotoxic effects of tobramycin on tendon tissue are indicated to solidify its use as a clinical alternative to vancomycin in ACLR. Clinical Relevance: These results will begin establishing tobramycin as an alternative to vancomycin in ACL graft decontamination. Recent progress in the development of MnO2-based micromotors has shown the immense potential of these motile devices to remediate environmental contamination. However, the production of such micromotors on an industrial scale through a facile, efficient and reproducible process remains challenging. The present work aimed to address this issue using naturally occurring and abundant pine pollen (PP) grains. The immersion of PP in potassium permanganate (KMnO4) solutions was found to generate MnO2 nanoparticles (NPs) on the PP surfaces, the amount and distribution of which was readily adjusted by varying the coating time. Because of the asymmetrical shape of the PP grains, the MnO2/PP composites exhibited rapid self-propulsion at a maximum speed of 360.686 μm/s (approximately eight body lengths/s) in low-concentration hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) solutions. The ability of these materials to remediate heavy metal pollutants was also examined and was evidently increased by a factor of 1.5 compared with static counterparts. These composites could also be recovered and reused over three consecutive cycles. The competitive cost, continuous motion and superior decontamination capacity of these materials suggests potential applications in the rapid removal or degradation of heavy metal ions, toxic organic dyes, pathogenic bacteria and other pollutants in wastewater. Water contamination by harmful organic and inorganic compounds seriously burdens human health and aquatic life. A series of conventional water purification methods can be employed, yet they come with certain disadvantages, including resulting sludge or solid waste, incomplete treatment process, and high costs. To overcome these limitations, attention has been drawn to nanotechnology for fabricating better-performing adsorbents for contaminant removal. In particular, magnetic nanostructures hold promise for water decontamination applications, benefiting from easy removal from aqueous solutions. In this respect, numerous researchers worldwide have reported incorporating magnetic particles into many composite materials. Therefore, this review aims to present the newest advancements in the field of magnetic composites for water decontamination, describing the appealing properties of a series of base materials and including the results of the most recent studies. In more detail, carbon-, polymer-, hydrogel-, aerogel-, silica-, clay-, biochar-, metal–organic framework-, and covalent organic framework-based magnetic composites are overviewed, which have displayed promising adsorption capacity for industrial pollutants. Aims: To measure nurses' compliance with standard precautions during the COVID‐19 pandemic, compare findings with previous assessments and describe the barriers affecting nurses' compliance. Background: Healthcare providers' compliance with standard precautions is still limited worldwide. Implementation of infection control policies in hospitals is needed internationally, especially during a pandemic. Surprisingly, studies exploring nurses' compliance with standard precautions are lacking during COVID‐19. Methods: A multicenter cross‐sectional study was adopted in two Italian hospitals. Nurses' compliance with standard precautions was measured through The Compliance with Standard Precautions Scale (Italian version). An open‐ended question explored the barriers to nurses' compliance with standard precautions. Reporting, followed the STROBE guidelines. Results: A total of 201 nurses were enrolled in 2020. Nurses' compliance with standard precautions was suboptimal. A statistically significant improvement in the compliance rate with standard precautions was observed between pre‐ and during COVID‐19 assessments. High compliance was found in the appropriate use of surgical masks, gloves and sharps disposal. Nurses perceived personal, structural and organizational barriers to standard precautions adherence. Conclusion: Nurses' compliance with standard precautions was not 100%, and different factors impeded nurses to work safely. Our findings provide institutional leaders and educators with the basis for implementing policies to optimize nurse safety, well‐being and patient care. Implications for nursing and health policies: Nurses have the right to work safely, and when the shortage of personal protective equipment and nurses during an emergency threatens healthcare quality worldwide, policymakers are challenged to act by establishing an effective allocation of resources for consistent compliance with standard precautions. The presence of ammonium (NH4+) in natural waters has increased in the last years due to the rising use of agricultural fertilizers, industrial activity and sewage discharges without any decontamination treatment. The great amounts of this inorganic cation in water bodies have been considered an environmental problem, due to its influence on the eutrophication process which leads to the deterioration of water quality. The application of ZnO nanoparticles to assess nutrient elimination, including ammonium, from water bodies has not been exhaustively studied. In this work, the capability of ZnO nanoparticles to remove ammonium cation from aqueous samples induced by adsorption is investigated. In this regards, experiments tending to determine the efficiency of nanomaterials have been performed employing two different NH4+ concentrations aiming to replicate two feasible real water-impacted environments. The interactions between adsorbent and adsorbate have been explored by employing experimental characterization techniques as well as theoretical DFT simulations. The achieved data demonstrated that the efficiency of ZnONPs shows a dependency on the ammonium concentration, ranging between 0.79 and 11.6 mg of ammonium adsorbed per gram of ZnONPs. According to the data on characterization prior and post adsorption of the ZnO nanomaterials the electrostatic interaction would not be favored, being the coordination ones the most feasible as suggested experimental and DFT results. Portable X-ray fluorescence has successfully been used to effectively evaluate occupational exposure to airborne and surface metal contaminants nondestructively. Traditional methods of assessing metal surface contamination involve the costly, time-consuming collection and laboratory analysis of wipe samples, making portable X-ray fluorescence an attractive alternative method for screening worksites by reducing delays in risk assessment decision-making. Existing research into this use of portable X-ray fluorescence has primarily been centered on the analysis of airborne and surface lead contamination. The extant literature is sparse on the use of portable X-ray fluorescence with other metals for surface contamination with respect to occupational exposure. The present study evaluated the use of portable X-ray fluorescence in the screening of cadmium surface contamination to determine if the effectiveness of decontamination measures can be ascertained by this technique. Wipe samples were collected and screened with portable X-ray fluorescence before being sent to the laboratory for definitive analysis to assess the correlation between portable X-ray fluorescence readings in percent mass with laboratory results in μg/ft2. Portable X-ray fluorescence readings demonstrated a strong linear correlation with laboratory results, as indicated by the R2 value of 0.993. Therefore, this technique may be further developed and deployed as a screening tool for wipe samples used for evaluating contamination and decontamination of metal-contaminated areas. Because of their many advantages, such as simplicity of handling, affordability, and environmental friendliness, green magnetic nanoparticles (GMNPs) are currently receiving more attention than prevailing magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs). The synthesis and application of GMNPs inspired by biological systems are encouraged by rising ecological consciousness and stringent environmental restrictions and also deal with in detail in this manuscript. The current report presents the biological and environmental uses of GMNPs in-depth. Numerous biomedical applications, including imaging and diagnosis, cancer therapy, immunoassay, genetic engineering, and supported enzymes (proteins and peptides), among others, successfully use GMNPs. The GMNPs would be coupled with tiny sensors, microsystems, and microfluidics modules to boost the signal sensitivity for the identification of environmental contaminants, diseases, poisons, drugs, and trace biomarkers from clinical, environmental, and dietary examples. The GMNPs were essential elements in gene delivery and gene therapy initiatives, among other genetic engineering endeavors. They have also been extensively used for environmental applications such as wastewater treatment, organic pollutants decontamination, electrochemical sensing, industrial and radioactive wastes treatment, pollutant adsorption and removal etc. The use of GMNPs, particularly biosynthesized MNPs, is also believed to be more cost-effective than the majority of regularly used traditional MNPs. In addition, Green magnetic nanoparticles applied as supported enzymes, proteins and peptides catalyst, positron emission tomography, computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, theranostics, thermo-chemotherapy, electrochemical immunoassay and efficient detection of coronavirus is a significant issue in modern analytical chemistry and other fields. Although studies have shown high survival rates of dental implants, complications may occur mainly due to peri-implant infections. These highlight the importance of establishing protocols for implant decontamination using adjuvant therapies, such as ozone. This study aimed to evaluate the potential for in vitro decontamination of ozonated water on implants surface. Sixteen titanium implants were used, distributed into the groups (n = 4): group E – sterile implants; group C – contaminated implants; group O40 – contaminated implants treated with ozonated water 40 mg/L; and group O60 – contaminated implants treated with ozonated water 60 mg/L. The implants of groups C, O40, and O60 were contaminated in vitro with biofilm. Groups O40 and O60 were decontaminated with ozonated water for 1 minute. Microbiologic analysis was performed by counting colony-forming units (CFUs). Experimental group comparisons were done using a one-way ANOVA test with Tukey's posttest; a comparison between groups O40 and O60 was done using an independent t-test (p < 0.05). There was a difference among all experimental groups (p = 0.000), with a more significant reduction in CFUs in group O60 (0.83 × 107 ± 0.06) compared to group C (3.41 × 107 ± 0.41). Nuclear power components contain radioactivity on their surfaces after long-term service, which can be harmful to personnel and the environment during maintenance, dismantling, and decommissioning. In this experiment, laser decontamination technology is utilized to remove radioactivity from their surfaces. In order to meet the actual needs, a laser decontamination process without spot overlapping has been studied. Under the same equipment conditions, the decontamination efficiency of the non-spot overlapping process is 10 times higher than that of the spot overlapping process. Alloy 690 is used as the test substrate, and non-radioactive specimens are prepared by simulating primary-circuit hydrochemical conditions. The surface morphology, elemental composition, and phase composition of the specimens before and after laser decontamination are investigated with SEM and XRD using the single-pulse experiment and power single-factor experiment methods, and the laser decontamination effect was evaluated. The results show that the decontamination efficiency reached 10.8 m2/h under the conditions of a pulse width of 500 ns, a laser repetition frequency of 40 kHz, a scanning speed of 15,000 mm/s, and a line spacing of 0.2 mm, according to which the removal effect was achieved when the laser power was 160 W and the oxygen content on the surface was 6.29%; additionally, there were no oxide phases in the XRD spectra after decontamination. Therefore, the laser cleaning process without spot overlap can provide reference for future practical operations to achieve efficient removal of radioactivity from nuclear power components. The worldwide demand for clean water is rising worldwide, yet wastewater decontamination is actually limited by the presence of refractory organic and inorganic compounds, calling for more efficient treatment methods. Here we review the use of ruthenium-based catalysts for the removal or transformation of pollutants at a concentration range of 1.0–100 mg/L under acid or neutral conditions. We focus on catalytic oxidation and reduction, and on the environmental impact of ruthenium catalysts. In a mass casualty medical evacuation after a bioaerosol (BA) dispersal event, a decontamination (DC) method is needed that can both decontaminate and prevent biological particle (BP) re-aerosolization (RA) of contaminated clothes. However, neither the efficacy of current DC methods nor the risk of BP RA is greatly explored in the existing literature. The goals of this study were to develop a repeatable method to quantify the RA of a biological contaminant off military uniform fabric swatches and to test the efficacy of one DC protocol (high-volume, low-pressure water) using 1 µm polystyrene latex (PSL) spheres as a surrogate. A four-step methodology was developed: contamination using a Collison Nebulizer; RA using a laboratory mixer and aerosol collection using an inhalable air sampler with a polyvinyl chloride filter; DC using a gravity-fed water shower; and quantification using ultraviolet microscopy via both visual and computer techniques. All results for uncontaminated control samples showed little to no presence of PSL sphere-like particles, while the contaminated experimental trials showed that RA was much lower after DC with water at the 99% confidence level (p-value = 0.0081). The water DC showed an average ∼73% reduction in particle RA, along with a change in air sampler filter deposition patterns from aerosol-like (before DC) to droplet-like (after DC). Introduction: In a suitable condition, it is important to perform any dental restorative procedure using an operatory field isolated. Then, the aim of this study was to compare the bond strength of composite restorations to dentin affected by any contamination agent through a systematic review. Methods: This systematic review was performed following the PRISMA 2020 guidelines. The literature search was conducted until September 2022 by scanning the following databases: Embase, PubMed, Scielo, Scopus, and Web of Science. Manuscripts evaluated the bond strength of resin‐based materials to permanent human dentin contaminated with blood or saliva were selected for full‐text review. The risk of bias was assessed by the RoBDEMAT tool. Results: A total of 3750 papers resulted from the search from all databases. After the full‐text reading, a total of 62 articles remained for the qualitative analysis. The contamination agents used were blood, saliva, and hemostatic agents. A great variety of protocols were used to contaminate the dentin surface, and the contamination process occurred in several steps of the bonding process, including before and after the etching process, after the primer application and after the adhesive application. Also, several decontamination procedures were tested, including reapplication of the etching material, rinsing with water, chlorhexidine or sodium hypochlorite and reapplication of the adhesive system. Conclusion: Any contamination with blood or saliva impaired the bond strength of resin‐based materials to dentin. Decontamination procedures including water‐spray and reapplication of the bonding system could revert the impairment produced by the saliva or blood contamination. The use of hemostatic agents as a method of blood decontamination is not recommended. Objective: This study describes firefighters' on-scene decontamination procedure use post-working fire and frequency of adherence to best practice. Methods: This retrospective analysis of working fires was conducted using records from the ESO Data Collaborative (Austin, TX) national research database from January 1, 2021, to December 31, 2021. Documentation of decontamination procedures was examined among records with smoke or combustion products exposure. Firefighter and incident characteristics were evaluated. Descriptive statistics and univariable odds ratios were calculated. Results: Among the 31,281 firefighters included in the study, 8.0% documented a fire-related exposure. Of those, 82% performed at least one on-scene decontamination procedure; 5% documented all decontamination procedures defined as best practices. The odds of documenting any decontamination procedure were significantly decreased among firefighters responding to incidents in rural areas compared with urban areas (odds ratio, 0.70). Decontamination and cleaning of surface-contaminated radioactive waste using laser ablation is a promising new technique being researched. One advantage is the potential to recycle waste and reduce the demand for repository storage. However, prior studies have shown that residual radioactivity can persist after laser decontamination indicating the incorporation of contaminants beneath the surface of metal samples. In this study, a q-switched laser was used to measure the depth of the recast zone at various fluences and simulate a decontamination process using a gold-coated sample. The results showed that surface material was found in the recast zone for fluences ranging from 1 to 10 J/cm2. This suggests that incorporation of surface contaminants after laser ablation is an important issue that must be considered before using this technique for radioactive waste treatment. This commentary describes developments in occupational exposure science over the last 30 yr, highlighting theoretical descriptions of inhalation, dermal, inadvertent ingestion, and ocular exposure in the workplace and how they are intertwined. In particular, the way that we define "exposure" in the theory determines what is and is not measured in workplace investigations, and what contextual information about the work and the environment is recorded alongside the exposure measurements. Central to all the theoretical models described is the unifying concept of uptake, or the mass of hazardous substance entering the body by different routes over a workday. Measurement of uptake is currently practicable for inhalation exposure, although further methodological developments are needed to allow uptake measurement for the other relevant exposure routes. Little attempt has been made to date to try to integrate worker behaviour into exposure assessment, despite this clearly being an important determinant of exposure. Purpose: The goal of this study was to create a cleaning procedure by comparing the performance of six different cleaning methods on the surfaces in pharmacy intravenous admixture service (PIVAS) work area. Method: A stainless steel plate was simulating contaminated by gemcitabine, cyclophosphamide, epirubicin, etoposide, and paclitaxel, which was then dried and cleaned by per current cleaning protocols. The residues were collected and quantified by ultra-performance liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC–MS/MS). Based on the most appropriate cleaning protocol, three cleaning variables were optimized: (1) use of dry gauze after cleaning agent application; (2) cleaning paths (inside-out vs. outside-in); (3) cleaning times (once or twice). Best conditions were tested with real samples from a hospital PIVAS. Results: This 10–2 M sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and dry gauze cleaning protocol increases cleaning efficiency as well as saves time. Different from the traditional cleaning manner, we found that cleaning from outside to inside can not only improve the cleaning efficiency but also overcome the uneven distribution of drug residues caused by cleaning action. When simulating contamination at a high dose (4 mg/mL) level, it was found that the decontamination efficacy increased with repeating one more time. Conclusion: The 10–2 M SDS and dry gauze cleaning protocol could obtain the best cleaning effect. The success of cytotoxic drug decontamination is determined not only by the cleaning solution, but also by the cleaning route and frequency. Compared with the traditional cleaning manner, there was a significant reduction in the contamination levels in the PIVAS work area after the cleaning protocol with 10–2 M SDS and dry gauze. Improper and insufficient treatment of infectious hospital wastewater could seriously endanger public health and the environment. Ferrate(VI), a strong oxidizing, disinfecting, and coagulating agent, has the potential as a green solution for decontamination of water and wastewater. In this paper, electrochemically prepared potassium ferrate (K2FeO4) with high purity was successfully encapsulated and applied to the water contaminated by SARS‐CoV‐2. Natural zeolite was chosen as an appropriate ecological material for ferrate encapsulation. The stability of encapsulated ferrate (in tablet form) was monitored for an extended time period (290 days) and has significantly increased in contrast with free potassium ferrate by almost 30%. Subsequently, the K2FeO4 encapsulated with zeolite in tablet form was applied to the water and municipal water samples containing the SARS‐CoV‐2 virus. The removal efficiency reached up to 98.5% and 86.7%, respectively, under natural conditions. Combination of environmentally friendly oxidizing agent and natural excellent adsorbent leads to the creation of very effective water treatment matter. These findings are essentially immediate and especially important for immediate water treatment in urgent situations such as natural disasters or military conflict. Objectives: The objectives are to compare lead blood concentrations in veterinary workers using lead shielding with concentrations in a control population, to measure hand surface lead before and after use of shielding, and to compare hand surface lead with and without the use of disposable gloves worn under hand shielding. Methods: Blood and hand wipe samples were analyzed for lead using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Results: There was no difference in blood lead between exposed and control groups. After lead glove use, 69% (18/26) of hand surface lead samples from workers not using disposable gloves were greater than 500 μg, 42% (11/26) were greater than 1000 μg, and 12% (3/26) were greater than 2000 μg. Moisture‐wicking clothes are widely consumed in various leisure or sports activities due to their function of moisture absorption and perspiration, which can provide consumers with a good comfortable experience. In this investigation, the stain removal performance of moisture‐wicking fabric was investigated, especially the influence of surfactants and hydrophilic finishing agents on its decontamination ability. The results show that moisture‐wicking fabric has better decontamination performance than ordinary polyester fabric. The binding force between stains and fibers is calculated by density functional theory (DFT). Compared with ordinary polyester fabric, the binding energy between moisture‐wicking fabric and sebum is lower, resulting in stain is more easily to be removed during washing. Different surfactants have a great influence on the decontamination of fabrics, among which the nonionic surfactants with longer carbon chains have the best decontamination performance. Moreover, after finishing with hydrophilic silicone agent, the hydrophilicity of the fabric is significantly improved, and its decontamination performance is also improved. However, this hydrophilic silicone agent will be gradually removed in the subsequent washing process, especially after the first washing, the removal rate reached 75.70%. To take advantage of solar energy, BiVO 4 /ZIF-8/Cu 2 S/Ag 2 S quaternary photocatalyst with different amounts of ZIF-8 was synthesized. Composites were characterized by FTIR, XRD, TEM, HR-TEM, PL, EDX, DRS and BET. The photocatalytic performance was evaluated and composite with 77.5, 15, 5 and 2.5 wt% of BiVO 4 , Cu 2 S, Ag 2 S and ZIF-8 showed the best qualification with 83.5 % metronidazole removal efficiency. Photocatalytic nanoparticles were incorporated into ABS/MWCNT membranes and they were characterized by SEM, EDX, AFM, electrical conductivity and contact angle measurements. The membrane with 2 wt% MWCNT had conductivity 106 times higher than that of pristine ABS membrane. The contact angles were decreased and the membrane with a more hydrophilic surface resulted in the flux improvement to 200 kg/m2. h. The enhanced drug retention up to 81 % indicated that by using the proper amount of photocatalyst it was possible to increase both the flux and rejection parameters. The flux recovery after solar illumination was obtained as 95.6 % for membrane with 0.5 wt% photocatalytic composites, that result in appropriate anti-fouling capability. finally, high performance photocatalytic activity makes membrane with 0.5 wt% photocatalyst and 1 wt% MWCNT superior for long-life filtration (36 h). Simple Summary: Phytoremediation is a plant-based approach to extract, stabilise, eliminate, or render pollutants into less harmful form. The study highlights the use of a native polar microalga as a means of phytoremediation in Antarctica where imported microbes are prohibited. Since 1959, Antarctica has been a protected region to preserve its dynamic ecosystems, but it is increasingly vulnerable to climate change and pollution. One of the anthropogenic disturbances in the continent is diesel spillage. Due to the extreme polar environment, natural attenuation of spilled diesel is severely hindered; hence, the problem calls for an effective and sustainable solution. This laboratory study proved that Antarctic microalga was capable of removing diesel (57.6%) through biodegradation and biosorption in the span of nine days. Meanwhile, mixotrophic cultivation triggered the vacuolar activities and potentially stimulated lipid assimilation in the cells. The microalgal-based process offers a cheap alternative in water decontamination while bearing the economic potential through the secretion of valuable products, such as biolipids. Microalgae are well known for their metal sorption capacities, but their potential in the remediation of hydrophobic organic compounds has received little attention in polar regions. We evaluated in the laboratory the ability of an Antarctic microalga to remediate diesel hydrocarbons and also investigated physiological changes consequent upon diesel exposure. Using a polyphasic taxonomic approach, the microalgal isolate, WCY_AQ5_1, originally sampled from Greenwich Island (South Shetland Islands, maritime Antarctica) was identified as Tritostichococcus sp. (OQ225631), a recently erected lineage within the redefined Stichococcus clade. Over a nine-day experimental incubation, 57.6% of diesel (~3.47 g/L) was removed via biosorption and biodegradation, demonstrating the strain's potential for phytoremediation. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy confirmed the adsorption of oil in accordance with its hydrophobic characteristics. Overall, degradation predominated over sorption of diesel. Chromatographic analysis confirmed that the strain efficiently metabolised medium-chain length n-alkanes (C-7 to C-21), particularly n-heneicosane. Mixotrophic cultivation using diesel as the organic carbon source under a constant light regime altered the car/chl-a ratio and triggered vacuolar activities. A small number of intracellular lipid droplets were observed on the seventh day of cultivation in transmission electron microscopic imaging. BACKGROUND: Measures to prevent exposure to anticancer drugs mitigate health hazards for caregivers, family members, and healthcare workers caring for patients with cancer. Previous studies have reported that anticancer drugs were detected on the linens of patients receiving chemotherapy. OBJECTIVES: This pilot study investigated the effectiveness of the washing methods recommended by Japanese guidelines for linens contaminated with cyclophosphamide (CTX). METHODS: This study used 15 shirts contaminated with 10 mg of CTX divided into three study groups washed with or without detergent, with or without an additional clean shirt. The CTX level on each shirt was measured after washing. Residual CTX levels on the shirts were compared to the measurable level of 1 ng/cm2 as a criterion for evaluating efficacy. FINDINGS: Washing a garment twice, as recommended in the Japanese guidelines, is effective in removing CTX contamination from clothing with or without detergent. BACKGROUND: Monitoring for the presence of hazardous drug (HD) residue is recommended as part of a comprehensive HD safety program. However, a single wipe test provides limited information without the ability to evaluate interventions. OBJECTIVES: This quality improvement project was designed to evaluate the benefits of performing sequential HD wipe testing during a six-month period in an ambulatory cancer center. METHODS: Four areas in the pharmacy department and two areas in the infusion department were selected for testing, which was conducted at three time points. Cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, 5-fluorouracil, methotrexate, and paclitaxel were tested using liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry. FINDINGS: The initial test demonstrated HD contamination on the legs of the IV pole and the pharmacy transport bin. All other areas were below the limit of detection. Changes were made to cleaning practices in the pharmacy and infusion departments prior to the subsequent tests at the three- and six-month time points, which produced levels below the limit of detection. Knowledge of trophic interaction is necessary to understand the dynamics of ecosystems and develop ecosystem‐based management. The key data to measure these interactions should come from large‐scale diet analyses with good taxonomic resolution. To that end, molecular methods that analyze prey DNA from guts and feces provide high‐resolution dietary taxonomic data. However, molecular diet analysis may also produce unreliable results if the samples are contaminated by external sources of DNA. Employing the freshwater European whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus) as a tracer for sample contamination, we studied the possible route of whitefish in beaked redfish (Sebastes mentella) guts sampled in the Barents Sea. We used whitefish‐specific COI primers for diagnostic analysis, and fish‐specific 12S and metazoa‐specific COI primers for metabarcoding analyses of intestine and stomach contents of fish samples that were either not cleaned, water cleaned, or bleach cleaned after being in contact with whitefish. Both the diagnostic and COI metabarcoding revealed clear positive effects of cleaning samples as whitefish were detected in significantly higher numbers of uncleaned samples compared to water or bleach‐cleaned samples. Stomachs were more susceptible to contamination than intestines and bleach cleaning reduced the frequency of whitefish contamination. Also, the metabarcoding approach detected significantly more reads of whitefish in the stomach than in intestine samples. The diagnostic analysis and COI metabarcoding detected contaminants in a higher and comparable number of gut samples than the 12S‐based approach. Aim: To answer the following PICOS question: "In adult patients with peri‐implantitis, what is the efficacy of surgical therapy with chemical surface decontamination of implant surfaces in comparison with surgical therapy alone or surgery with placebo decontamination, on probing pocket depth (PD) reduction and bleeding on probing (BoP)/suppuration on probing (SoP), in randomized controlled clinical trials (RCTs) and non‐RCTs with at least 6 months of follow‐up?" Materials and Methods: Six databases were searched from their inception up to 20 May 2022. Data on clinical outcome variables were pooled and analysed using mean differences (MDs), risk ratios (RRs), or risk differences (RDs) as appropriate, 95% confidence intervals (CIs), and prediction intervals (PIs) in the case of significant heterogeneity. Primary outcomes were determined as changes in PD and BoP/SoP. Secondary outcomes were radiographic marginal bone loss (MBL), implant loss, and disease resolution. PROSPERO registration number: CRD42022325603. Results: Six RCTs—two with moderate, three with high, and one with low risk of bias (RoB)—were included. These studies test the adjunctive effect of photodynamic therapy (PDT), chlorhexidine (CHX), and administration of local antibiotics (LAbs) during surgery on the clinical outcome. In a single 12‐month study, the adjunctive use of local antibiotics showed a clinically relevant reduction of PD [MD = 1.44; 95%CI (0.40 to −2.48)] and MBL [MD = 1.21; 95%CI (0.44–1.98); one trial, 32 participants]. PDT showed a small but significant reduction in BoP [MD = 7.41%; 95%CI (0.81–14.00); p = 0.028; two trials; 42 participants]. Treatment with CHX resulted in no significant changes in PD, BoP, or MBL compared to placebo (saline solution). None of the interventions affected disease resolution and implant loss. Certainty of the evidence was very low for all outcome measures assessed. Conclusions: Within the limitations of this systematic review and the meta‐analysis, adjunctive use of chemicals such as PDT, CHX, and LAbs for surface decontamination during surgery of peri‐implantitis cannot be recommended as superior to standard debridement procedures (mechanical debridement with or without saline). Aim: To answer the following PICOS question: In adult patients with peri‐implantitis, what is the efficacy of sub‐marginal instrumentation combined with chemical surface decontamination in comparison with sub‐marginal instrumentation with or without placebo, in terms of changes in probing depth (PD) and/or bleeding on probing, as reported in prospective randomized controlled trials, non‐randomized controlled trials, or prospective cohort studies, with a minimum of 6‐month "follow‐up". Materials and Methods: A systematic literature search was performed in PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, Scopus, Ovid Medline, and The Cochrane Library of the Cochrane Collaboration (CENTRAL) for articles published until March 2022. Data addressing the primary and secondary outcomes were extracted. Results: The search gave 2033 results of which 3 fulfilled the inclusion criteria. Two studies investigated the use of anti‐microbial photodynamic therapy as adjunct to sub‐marginal instrumentation and the third study assessed the adjunctive use of a desiccant material. A meta‐analysis was not deemed meaningful because of the large heterogeneity among the studies. All three studies showed favourable results in terms of PD reduction for chemical surface decontamination over control approaches, but were inconsistent or showed no differences for the other outcome variables. Conclusions: Adjunctive chemical approaches for implant surface decontamination may offer an advantage over sub‐marginal instrumentation alone, in terms of improved PD. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This quasi‐experimental study aimed to identify the effect of decontamination using quaternary ammonium chloride (QAC) on bacterial burden on hospital privacy curtains. The objects were the high‐touch edges of 66 polyester curtains in inpatient wards. The decontamination was performed daily (n = 22), twice‐weekly (n = 22), or not performed (n = 22) for 28 days. The bacterial burden on the curtains was measured based on the number of bacteria, the proportion of curtains with >2.5 colony‐forming unit/cm2, and the proportion of curtains with multidrug‐resistant organisms (MDROs). As a result, the daily or twice‐weekly decontamination groups showed a significantly lower increase in bacterial burden than the no‐decontamination group overall and at all four posttest times. On day 28, daily decontamination showed a lower increase in the number of bacteria (p < 0.001) and proportions of curtains with >2.5 colony form units/cm2 (p < 0.001) than the no‐decontamination condition, and in the number of curtains with MDROs than twice‐weekly decontamination. In conclusion, decontamination of curtains using QAC helps reduce bacterial burden, and daily decontamination is recommended up to 28 days after installation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Rapid and efficient decontamination of the skin is a major task for emergency rescue services in the event of a chemical accident involving humans. While rinsing the skin with water (and soap) has been the standard procedure, some skepticism has developed in recent years regarding the situational suitability of this method. The efficacy of three different decontamination materials/techniques (Easyderm® cleaning cloth, water-soaked all-purpose sponge, rinsing with water) in removing Capsaicin, Bromadiolone, Paraquat and 2,2′-dichlorodiethylether (DCEE) from porcine skin was compared. Different cleaning motions (wiping, twisting, pressing) with the Easyderm® were evaluated for their effectiveness in removing Capsaicin from porcine skin. Finally, the impact of different exposure times of the skin to Capsaicin on the decontamination process were investigated. Contaminant recovery rates (CRRs) were analysed in the skin and in each decontamination material using high-performance-liquid-chromatography (HPLC; used for Capsaicin, Bromadiolone, Paraquat) or gas chromatography (GC; used for DCEE). Wiping the skin with the amphiphilic Easyderm® was most effective for decontamination of Capsaicin and DCEE, while the water rinsing method gave the best results for removing Paraquat and Bromadiolone. Both wiping with the Easyderm® and rotating the Easyderm® were significantly more effective in cleaning Capsaicin-contaminated skin than pressing the Easyderm® on the contamination area alone. Prolonged exposure times of the porcine skin to Capsaicin were associated with a decrease in efficacy of the following decontamination. Emergency rescue services should have materials available that can remove both hydrophilic and hydrophobic substances from skin. Since not all of our results for comparing different decontamination materials were as distinct as we expected, there are likely several other factors determining the efficacy of skin decontamination in some cases. Purpose Minimizing hazardous drug (HD) contamination is critical for protecting the health of healthcare workers (HCWs) and patients. Alarmingly, widespread HD contamination has been documented across a variety of clinical settings. Quantitative wipe sampling presents significant time and cost barriers, resulting in routine monitoring adherence rates around 25%. Closed-system drug transfer devices (CSTDs) and qualitative point-of-care tests can be implemented to overcome these barriers. Methods In this study, we tested the effects of the BD PhaSeal Optima (Becton, Dickinson and Company), a recently introduced CSTD, on HD contamination at 2 chemotherapy infusion centers. Wipe samples were taken at 29 workstations at each location prior to and a year following CSTD implementation. Additionally, traditional liquid chromatography with mass spectrometry (LCMS/MS) analyses were compared against a novel lateral flow immunoassay HD testing device (BD HD Check; Becton, Dickinson and Company) to determine the validity of the qualitative assay. Results We found a 46% reduction in HD contamination after incorporating the CSTD into clinical workflows. Across time points and sites, HD contamination reported by the BD HD Check device was 91% accurate against LCMS/MS and 98% accurate within its limits of detection. Conclusion Collectively, the evaluated CSTD and lateral flow immunoassay device may help to reduce HD contamination and provide real-time measures of contamination, respectively. Recently, efficient decontamination of water and wastewater have attracted global attention due to the deficiency in the world's water sources. Herein, activated carbon (AC) derived from willow catkins (WCs) was successfully synthesized using chemical modification techniques and then loaded with different weight percentages of nickel ferrite nanocomposites (10, 25, 45, and 65 wt.%) via a one-step hydrothermal method. The morphology, chemical structure, and surface composition of the nickel ferrite supported on AC (NFAC) were analyzed by XRD, TEM, SEM, EDX, and FTIR spectroscopy. Textural properties (surface area) of the nanocomposites (NC) were investigated by using Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) analysis. The prepared nanocomposites were tested on different dyes to form a system for water remediation and make this photocatalyst convenient to recycle. The photodegradation of rhodamine B dye was investigated by adjusting a variety of factors such as the amount of nickel in nanocomposites, the weight of photocatalyst, reaction time, and photocatalyst reusability. The 45NFAC photocatalyst exhibits excellent degradation efficiency toward rhodamine B dye, reaching 99.7% in 90 min under a simulated source of sunlight. Humic substances (HS) are originated from naturally decaying biomass. The main products of HS are humic acids, fulvic acids, and humins. HS are extracted from natural origins (e.g., coals, lignite, forest, and river sediments). However, the production of HS from these resources is not environmentally friendly, potentially impacting ecological systems. Earlier theories claimed that the HS might be transformed from lignin by enzymatic or aerobic oxidation. On the other hand, lignin is a by-product of pulp and paper production processes and is available commercially. However, it is still under-utilized. To address the challenges of producing environmentally friendly HS and accommodating lignin in valorized processes, the production of lignin-derived HS has attracted attention. Currently, several chemical modification pathways can be followed to convert lignin into HS-like materials, such as alkaline aerobic oxidation, alkaline oxidative digestion, and oxidative ammonolysis of lignin. This review paper discusses the fundamental aspects of lignin transformation to HS comprehensively. The applications of natural HS and lignin-derived HS in various fields, such as soil enrichment, fertilizers, wastewater treatment, water decontamination, and medicines, were comprehensively discussed. Due to the high recurrence of microbial infections, developing new technologies for preventing the dissemination of pathogens is essential, especially to prevent infection in humans. Thus, devices for the decontamination of surfaces reduce not only the spread of pathogens in the environment, but provide greater security and protection for communities. Ozone (O3) is a substance capable of reducing or eliminating several types of microorganisms owing to its biocidal capacity, including when it is dissolved in water. The objective of this study was to develop an instant decontamination device using ozonated water. To confirm its biocidal action and verify the device's efficacy, the reduction of the microbial load of important pathogens on personal protective equipment (PPE) was assessed. In addition, in order to confirm the biocidal action of ozonated water against SARS-CoV-2, in vitro tests on a viral model of Gammacoronavirus were performed. The results showed the efficacy of ozonated water in the disinfection device at concentration ranges of 0.3–0.6 mg/L and 0.7–0.9 mg/L of ozonated water, with growth reductions above 2 log10 for both concentration ranges tested and inactivation fractions above 60% (0.3–0.6 mg/L) and 80% (0.7–0.9 mg/L), with a high proportion of the tested PPE showing 100% microbial reduction. In vitro results for the evaluation of ozonated water in a viral model showed a 99.9% reduction percentage in the concentration range of 0.3 to 0.5 mg/L and a 99% reduction in the concentration range of 0.6 to 0.8 mg/L, with a 5.10 log EDI50/mL and 6.95 log EDI50/mL reduction, respectively. The instant decontamination system developed in this study proved effective for microbial reduction, and we confirmed the potential of ozonated water as a biocidal agent. Firefighters are exposed to carcinogenic and mutagenic combustion emissions, including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Fire service and firefighter cancer advocacy groups recommend skin cleaning using wipes or washing with detergent and water after exposure to smoke, although these strategies have not been proven to reduce exposures to harmful combustion products such as PAHs. This study assessed dermal decontamination methods to reduce PAH exposures by firefighters participating in live fire training scenarios. Study participants (n = 88) were randomly assigned to an intervention group (i.e., two types of commercial skin wipes, detergent and water, or a control group who did not use any skin decontamination). PAHs were measured in personal air (during the fire) and dermal wipe samples (before and after fire suppression and after dermal decontamination). PAH metabolites and mutagenicity were measured in urine samples before and after fire suppression. Airborne PAH concentrations during the fire ranged between 200 and 3,970 μg/m3 (mean = 759 μg/m3, SD = 685 μg/m3). Firefighters had higher total PAHs and high-molecular-weight PAHs on their skin after the fire compared to before (1.3- and 2.2-fold, respectively, p < 0.01). Urinary PAH metabolites increased significantly following exposure to the training fires by 1.7 to 2.2-fold (depending on the metabolite, p < 0.001). Urinary mutagenicity did not differ significantly between pre- and post-fire for any of the decontamination methods. Detergent and water was the only intervention that removed a significant amount of total PAHs from the skin (0.72 ng/cm2 preintervention vs. 0.38 ng/cm2 postintervention, p < 0.01). However, fold changes in urinary PAH metabolites (i.e., pre- vs. post-exposure levels) did not differ among any of the dermal decontamination methods or the control group. These data suggest that despite on-site attempts to remove PAHs from firefighters' skin, the examined interventions did not reduce the internal dose of PAHs. The ubiquitous presence of contaminants in water poses a major threat to the safety of ecosystems and human health, and so more materials or technologies are urgently needed to eliminate pollutants. Polymer materials have shown significant advantages over most other adsorption materials in the decontamination of wastewater by virtue of their relatively high adsorption capacity and fast adsorption rate. In recent years, "green development" has become the focus of global attention, and the environmental friendliness of materials themselves has been concerned. Therefore, natural polymers-derived materials are favored in the purification of wastewater due to their unique advantages of being renewable, low cost and environmentally friendly. Among them, natural plant gums show great potential in the synthesis of environmentally friendly polymer adsorption materials due to their rich sources, diverse structures and properties, as well as their renewable, non-toxic and biocompatible advantages. Natural plant gums can be easily modified by facile derivatization or a graft polymerization reaction to enhance the inherent properties or introduce new functions, thus obtaining new adsorption materials for the efficient purification of wastewater. This paper summarized the research progress on the fabrication of various gums-based adsorbents and their application in the decontamination of different types of pollutants. The general synthesis mechanism of gums-based adsorbents, and the adsorption mechanism of the adsorbent for different types of pollutants were also discussed. Background: Intensified cleaning protocols to maintain a safe environment during the pandemic caused an increase in the use of disinfectants. The use of cleaning products in safer conditions by mothers is one of the important practices that will reduce the risk of household accidents. Objective: The aim of research was determine the practices of mothers about the safe use of cleaning and disinfectant products in the COVID-19. Methods: Data were collected by online survey among 255 mothers of the children 0-6 age from April and July 2021. Percentage, mean and chi-square tests were used to evaluate the data. Results: It was reported that the amount of cleaning product usage (69%) increased significantly, 26.3% of the mothers store the products in a locked cabinet and 29.4% use the product in the recommended amount. It was detected 28.7% of the mothers use disinfectants close to children. It was detected that 37.6% of the families were exposed to cleaning and disinfectant products. There was not significant difference between exposure situations and maternal age, education, employment status. Conclusions: It can be suggested that health workers should organize screening and training programs for the community about safe cleaning and disinfection practices. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Advanced photocatalysts that can utilize solar energy for water purification applications are always needed. The present article reports a facile fabrication of tungsten oxide (WO3)/bismuth oxychloride (BiOCl) immobilized on polyaniline (PAn) (BiOCl/WO3@PAn) heterojunction nanocomposite photocatalyst. The designed nanocatalyst was tested for 2-chlorophenol (2-CP) decontamination from the aquatic system. Synthesized WO3, BiOCl, and BiOCl/WO3@PAn nanocomposites were distinguished via UV-DSR, photoluminescence, SEM, TEM, XRD, and XPS analysis. The combination of PAn with WO3 and BiOCl showed a synergistic impact on the photocatalytic efficiency of the BiOCl/WO3@PAn nanocomposite. The synthesized BiOCl/WO3@PAn nanocomposite showed higher visible light absorption behavior and bandgap energy reduction than the WO3 and BiOCl. The obtained data shows that 2-CP photocatalysis by the BiOCl/WO3@PAn is controlled by degradation time, pH, and pollutant amount in the solution. The highest photocatalytic degradation of 2-CP (99.7%) was recorded at pH 5 and 25 mg/L concentration within 240 min. The photocatalysis mechanism and active radical scavenging study discovered that •O2− and •OH, were responsible for the 2-CP mineralization onto the BiOCl/WO3@PAn nanocomposite. The BiOCl/WO3@PAn nanocomposite showed enhanced decontamination properties over pristine catalysts. The reusability of the synthesized BiOCl/WO3@PAn nanocomposite was evaluated. It found that the photocatalyst could be recycled for up to four cycles for 2-CP degradation without significantly losing the photocatalytic properties. The fabricated BiOCl/WO3@PAn nanocomposite catalyst presented exceptional catalytic and recycling properties, indicating an effective method for scavenging hazardous organic contaminants under solar irradiation and green technology for wastewater purification. Antibiotics such as amoxicillin (AMX) are considered as one of the emerging pollutants, which brings many environmental and health disasters. Removing AMX from water resources should be considered a mandatory action. Moreover, by considering sustainable development goals, construction and demolition wastes may be applied as an entity of manufacturing in the different fields. In this paper, according to our best knowledge for the first time, cellular lightweight concrete waste was used as a non-expensive, powerful, and novel adsorbent for AMX removal from water. Based on response surface methodology, the key factors of adsorption process, including contact time, amounts of adsorbent, and pH, were studied. The ideal conditions for the removal of AMX are pH 11.65, the mass of adsorbent: 19.31 mg, and 34 min contact time. In addition, among the prediction models, the adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system was more fitted in comparison with random tree, multilayer perceptron and random forest algorithms. Different isotherm models such as Freundlich, Dubinin–Radushkevich, Langmuir, and Temkin, which have two-parameter equations besides Khan, Toth, and Sips with three-parameter equations were studied, and as a result, multilayer adsorption with the mainly heterogeneous surface was interpreted and fitted by the Freundlich model. Moreover, the kinetic models of adsorption, including pseudo-first- and second-order, Boyd, Elovich, intra-particle, and geometry kinematic computations, were examined, and pseudo-first order was more fitted with the adsorptive reaction. As per the geometric outcomes, the process of AMX adsorption appeared perfectly because there is no interaction between the adsorption and desorption rate graphs. These materials can be recycled with effective capacity for AMX removal after almost four repeated cycles. Finally, the competitive adsorption issue is investigated in detail between AMX and four other contaminations, including lead ion (Pb2+), malachite green, azithromycin (AZ), and sodium chloride (NaCl). Pennywort (Centella asiatica) is a herbaceous vegetable that is usually served in the form of fresh-cut vegetables and consumed raw. Fresh-cut vegetables are in high demand as they offer convenience, have fresh-like quality and are potentially great for therapeutic applications. However, it could be the cause of foodborne outbreaks. Pulsed light is known as a decontamination method for minimally processed products. The aim of this study was to determine the influence of pulsed light in combination with acidic electrolysed water on the sensory, morphological changes and bioactive components in the leaves of pennywort during storage. A combination of soaking with acidic electrolysed water (AEW) at pH 2.5 and pulsed light (PL) treatment (1.5 J/cm2) was tested on the leaves of pennywort. After treatment, these leaves were refrigerated (4 ± 1 °C) for two weeks and evaluated on the basis of sensory acceptance, the visual appearance of the epidermal cell and bioactive compounds. In terms of sensorial properties, samples treated with the combined treatment were preferred over untreated samples. The combination of AEW and PL 1.5 J/cm2 was the most preferred in terms of purchasing and consumption criteria. Observations of the epidermal cells illustrated that PL treatment kept the cell structure intact. The bioactive phytocompounds found in the leaves of pennywort are mainly from the triterpene glycosides (asiaticoside, madecassoside, asiatic acid and madecassic acid) and are efficiently preserved by the combined treatment applied. In conclusion, the combination of acidic electrolysed water and pulsed light treatment is beneficial in retaining the sensory quality and bioactive compounds in the leaves of Pennywort during storage at 4 ± 1 °C. Aluminum phosphide (AlP) poisoning is a serious medical emergency with a high mortality rate. The absence of an exact antidote for AlP poisoning necessitates the quest for alternative treatment options. The study sought to assess the efficacy of adding L-carnitine or medicated paraffin oil to the conventional approach of treatment employed in cases of acute AlP poisoning. We conducted a 1 year, randomized, controlled, parallel-group, single-blind clinical study. 96 individuals with acute AlP poisoning were randomly assigned to one of three groups. The standard AlP therapy was administered to all groups according to the Poison Control Center guidelines at the Ain-Shams University hospitals. All patients underwent a medical history review, clinical examination, and laboratory tests. The outcomes were assessed. The participants in the study groups had mean ages ranging from 25.6 to 26.3 years. The cases analyzed were evenly distributed between genders, with the majority originating from rural areas. The average delay time varied from 2.9 to 4.2 h. All patients in the study reported ingesting AlP during suicide attempts. 12 hours after admission, many clinical and biochemical data improved in both intervention groups including cytochrome c oxidase, caspase-3, caspase-9, catalase, and superoxide dismutase. The intervention groups required significantly less mechanical ventilation and had a lower mortality rate than the control group. Decontamination with paraffin oil could be advantageous for reducing the severity of AlP poisoning, improving prognosis, and lowering the mortality rate. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The removal of microalgae represents a problematic part of the water decontamination process, in which most techniques are expensive and non-ecological. In the paper, we focus on the synergistic relationship between microscopic filamentous fungi and algal culture. In the process of decontamination of a model sample containing ammonium ions, efficient biocoagulation, resp. co-pelletization of dried algae Chlorella sp. and Aspergillus niger sensu stricto are shown. The microscopic filamentous fungus species A. niger was added to a culture of an algal suspension of Chlorella sp., where the adhesion of the algal cells to the fungi subsequently occurred due to the electrostatic effect of the interaction, while the flocculation activity was approximately 70 to 80%. The algal cells adhered to the surface of the A. niger pellets, making them easily removable from the solution. The ability of filamentous fungi to capture organisms represents a great potential for the biological isolation of microalgae (biocoagulation) from production solutions because microalgae are considered to be a promising renewable source of oil and fermentables for bioenergy. This form of algae removal, or its harvesting, also represents a great low-cost method for collecting algae not only as a way of removing unnecessary material but also for the purpose of producing biofuels. Algae are a robust bioabsorbent for absorbing lipids from the environment, which after treatment can be used as a component of biodiesel. Chemical analyses also presented potential ecological innovation in the area of biofuel production. Polluted water continues to be a major problem globally since it deteriorates human health after consumption and impedes sustainable development. Nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) has been used to tackle the problem, but certain significant disadvantages of the nZVI limit its efficiency. Owing to the demerits of nZVI, various materials have been employed to support the nZVI to ensure efficient decontamination. There is rising interest in using attapulgite as a support for nZVI. The use of attapulgite supported nanoscale zero-valent iron (A-nZVI) to decontaminate wastewater/groundwater has proven to be highly efficient as compared to unsupported nZVI. This paper presents an overview of the syntheses, performance, application and limitations of using A-nZVI to treat wastewater/remediate groundwater. A-nZVI has been extensively employed on laboratory scale, thus making it difficult to simulate its removal efficiency on a large scale. However, its high removal efficiency under the appropriate operational conditions make it ideal to be used on an industrial level.
