Economic history and history of economic thought have had to contend with a crisis of a didactic and scientific nature since the beginning of the shift from a command economy to a free-market system in Poland, and the accompanying legal and constitutional changes have compounded these difficulties. The Law on Higher Education and Science reclassified academic fields and disciplines, with the result that history was placed in the humanities and economics and finance were placed in the social sciences. This paper aims to show the contribution of these two subdisciplines to the development of economics in Poland over the last 30 years. The present authors contend that the waning didactic significance of these two sub-disciplines at economics and history faculties, and the subsequent liquidation or absorption of many university departments devoted to them, has not impeded valuable research in these fields in Poland. The article not only presents the teaching, research and publishing activities of the existing academic institutions and faculties, but also shows the international influence of academicians and their teaching work, and examines the market for textbooks and synthetic works.

It points out the imbalance in research focus, with more attention given to literary and religious genres rather than economic models and theories. The article reviews a recent volume on the Mesopotamian economy, which examines the concept of "household" and analyzes economic functions and resource management over time and space. It suggests the use of new economic theories and approaches, such as those proposed by Keynes, North, and Ostrom, to gain fresh insights into the early Mesopotamian state's economy and its impact on society. The article emphasizes the importance of considering the role of individuals and households in economic activities and calls for clearer definitions and more accurate descriptions of economic terms. Objectives The aim of the article is to discuss the innovative work of Professor Antonio Magliulo, History of European Economic Thought, to indicate thematic areas for further discussion and polemics areas for continuation of his research. Another goal is to highlight several issues and research threads that appear on the pages of the publication, including the question and concept of the birth of Europe. Material and methods Basic research material of the article is the publication of Professor Antonio Magliulo, History of European Economic Thought. The methods used in the article include the analysis of the text itself and its substantive structure, grouping and pointing out several leading questions of the work's narrative, such as European values in the history of economic thought or the concept of the birth of Europe. Results The results of the work were summarised in the conclusions, where the basic guiding ideas have been indicated once again, i.e. European values in the history of economic thought, the concepts of the birth of Europe and the issues of its social and cultural identity perceived in the historical development of European economic thought. The conclusions also identify a number of thematic strands and issues for further discussion and potential polemical areas. Conclusions The main idea of Professor Antoni Magliulo's History of European Economic Thought is going around the issues of European values, which are fundamental for European identity and the resulting concepts in the history of European economic thought.

Economists ignore caring labor since most is provided unpaid. Disregard is unjust, theoretically indefensible, and probably misleading. Valuation requires estimates of time spent and the replacement or opportunity costs of that time. I use the maintenance costs of British workers, costs which cover both the material inputs into upkeep and the domestic services needed to turn commodities into livings, to isolate the costs of paid domestic labor. I then impute the value of unpaid domestic labor from these market equivalents, and aggregate across households without domestic servants. Historically, unpaid domestic labor represented c. 20 percent of total income, a contribution that suggests the need to revise some standard narratives. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the last week of August 2023 (27 Augustus – 2 September), the first V4 Summer School in Economic History was held in Prague. It was organized by the Institute of History of the Czech Academy of Sciences in cooperation with the Slovak Academy of Sciences, Bratislava, Eötvös Loránd University, Budapest, and the University of Warsaw. The event was financially supported by the Visegrad Fund. The long-term target of the Ph.D. Summer School in Economic History was to incorporate the V4 historiographies of economic history into international networks. It intended to encourage the young generation of economic historians to enter the international scene and participate in an open academic discussion.

"Never Together: The Economic History of a Segregated America" by Peter Temin is a historical narrative that explores the racial divide in American economic and social life.
