In the liquid phase of heterogeneous catalysis, solvent plays an important role and governs the kinetics and thermodynamics of a reaction. Although it is often difficult to quantify the role of the solvent, it becomes particularly challenging when a zeolite is used as the catalyst. This difficulty arises from the complex nature of the liquid/zeolite interface and the different solvation environments around catalytically active sites. Here, we use ab initio molecular dynamics simulations to probe the local solvation structure and dynamics of methanol and water over MWW zeolite nanosheets with varying Brønsted acidity. We find that the zeolite framework and the number and location of the acid sites in the zeolite influence the structure and dynamics of the solvent. In particular, methanol is more likely to be in the vicinity of the aluminum (Al3+) at the T4 site than at T1 due to easy accessibility. The methanol oxygen binds strongly to the Al at the T4 site, weakening the Al–O for the bridging acid site, which results in the formation of the silanol group, significantly reducing the acidity of the site. The behavior of methanol is in direct contrast to that of water, where protons can easily propagate from the zeolite to the solvent molecules regardless of the acid site location. Our work provides molecular-level insights into how solvent interacts with zeolite surfaces, leading to an improved understanding of the catalytic site in the MWW zeolite nanosheet. We calculate thermodynamic and structural quantities of a fluid of hard spheres of diameter σ in a quasi-one-dimensional pore with accessible pore width W smaller than σ by applying a perturbative method worked out earlier for a confined fluid in a slit pore [Franosch et al. Phys. Rev. Lett. 109, 240601 (2012)]. In a first step, we prove that the thermodynamic and a certain class of structural quantities of the hard-sphere fluid in the pore can be obtained from a purely one-dimensional fluid of rods of length σ with a central hard core of size σ W = σ 2 − W 2 and a soft part at both ends of length (σ − σW)/2. These rods interact via effective k-body potentials v eff (k) (k ≥ 2). The two- and the three-body potential will be calculated explicitly. In a second step, the free energy of this effective one-dimensional fluid is calculated up to leading order in (W/σ)2. Explicit results for, e.g., the perpendicular pressure, surface tension, and the density profile as a function of density, temperature, and pore width are presented and partly compared with results from Monte-Carlo simulations and standard virial expansions. We present the first systematic application of the integral equation implementation of the replica method to the study of arrested states in fluids with microscopic competing interactions (short-range attractive and long-range repulsive, SALR), as exemplified by the prototype Lennard-Jones–Yukawa model. Using a wide set of potential parameters, we provide as many as 11 different phase diagrams on the density (ρ)–temperature (T) plane, embodying both the cluster-phase boundary, TC(ρ), and the locus below which arrest takes place, TD(ρ). We describe how the interplay between TC and TD—with the former falling on top of the other, or the other way around, depending on thermodynamic conditions and potential parameters—gives rise to a rich variety of non-ergodic states interspersed with ergodic ones, of which both the building blocks are clusters or single particles. In a few cases, we find that the TD locus does not extend all over the density range subtended by the TC envelope; under these conditions, the λ-line is within reach of the cluster fluid, with the ensuing possibility to develop ordered microphases. Whenever a comparison is possible, our predictions favorably agree with previous numerical results. Thereby, we demonstrate the reliability and effectiveness of our scheme to provide a unified theoretical framework for the study of arrested states in SALR fluids, irrespective of their nature. Utilizing thermochemical reactions for thermal energy storage and solar fuel production has been an emerging research topic. Thermal transport properties of the materials are an important parameter that can determine the kinetics and efficiency of thermochemical reactions. With the increasing number of new thermochemical materials (TCMs); however, there is a lack of reliable techniques to monitor the thermal transport property of the materials and their changes as a function of reactions in real time. In this work, we report the in situ monitoring of thermochemical reactions using modulated photothermal radiometry (MPR). The thermal conductivities of two TCMs, namely, calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2) and Ba0.15Sr0.85FeO3−δ (BSF1585), were measured as a function of temperature and time using the MPR technique. The measured thermal conductivities were correlated to the reaction. The work has two significant contributions to the research communities. First, it provides a non-invasive diagnostic tool for monitoring the thermal transport properties of TCMs that can potentially be a high-throughput measurement technique conducive to optimizing TCMs, reactors, and related thermal systems. Second, for TCMs that show observable changes in thermal transport properties, a correlation between the measured thermal conductivity and the conversion fraction of the reaction can be established for monitoring the reaction kinetics based on thermal characterization. Crystal polymorphism of complex liquids plays a crucial role in industrial crystallization, food technology, pharmaceuticals, and materials engineering. However, the experimental identification of unknown crystal structures can be challenging, particularly for high-viscosity complex liquids, such as ionic liquids (ILs). In this study, we performed a molecular dynamics simulation coupled with metadynamics to investigate an imidazolium IL (1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphates). The simulation employed two distinct radial-distribution functions, represented by Gaussian window functions as collective variables, and revealed at least two crystal-like phases distinct from the known α and β crystal phases typically formed by this IL. Additionally, the simulation unveiled a unique phase characterized by the ordered spatial arrangement of anion aggregations. These crystal-like and unique phases emerged regardless of the potential used. The simulation methodology presented here is broadly applicable for exploring unknown phases in complex systems and contributes to the design of functional materials, such as porous ILs for gas molecule capture and separation. In this research, thermal modeling has been done to investigate the effect of nanofluid on the performance of the linear parabolic collector. Therminol vapor/liquid phase fluid (VP-1) has been used as a base fluid; iron oxide nanoparticles have been used to produce mono-nanofluid; and iron oxide multi-walled carbon nanotubes nanocomposite has been used as nanoparticles to produce hybrid nanofluid. The fluid flow inside the absorber tube of the collector is assumed to be turbulent. The results show that when hybrid nanofluid and mono-nanofluid are used, the energy and exergy efficiencies of the collector are higher than those for the conditions of using the base fluid, but their amount is slightly lower with the use of hybrid nanofluid than when the working fluid is mono-nanofluid. According to the obtained results, the highest energy efficiency of the linear parabolic collector using nanofluid and mono-nanofluid is 70.2% and 70.4%, respectively, and the highest exergy efficiency is 35.7% and 35.9%, respectively. Despite this, the friction coefficient of mono-nanofluid compared to hybrid nanofluid was obtained on average about 9% higher. The results showed that the criterion for evaluating the performance of the collector (hydrodynamic thermal efficiency) when hybrid nanofluid is used is more than when mono-nanofluid is used. The main target of this article is to analyze the role of activation energy and thermal radiation effects on the bioconvective peristaltic transport of Sutterby nanofluid in a two-dimensional flexible porous channel with heat and mass transfer. Also, the consequences of Hall current, heat source, and complaint wall properties along with an inclined magnetic field are taken into consideration. The proposed system of governing equations is simplified by using lubrication approximation and solved numerically using MATLAB's bvp5c solver. Further, numerical observations are analyzed to figure out the consequence of different physical parameters on the flow characteristics. According to the observations, it is identified that the Sutterby nanofluid velocity declines with the climb in the damping force parameter, while it enhances with the upsurge in the Darcy number. The Sutterby fluid temperature profile strengthens when the influence of the heat generation and Brinkman number increase, while it depicts the reverse effect with the elevation in the fluid parameter and radiation parameter. The temperature ratio and activation energy parameters were found to have a significant impact on the fluid concentration. The volume of the trapped fluid bolus is an enhancing function of the channel's non-uniformity parameter. We numerically investigate the dynamics and linear rheology of disordered systems made of patchy particles, focusing on the role of valence, temperature, and bonding mechanism. We demonstrate that the dynamics is enslaved to bonding, giving rise to an activated behavior at low temperatures. By independently computing the diffusion constant and the viscosity from the simulations, we also confirm the validity of the Stokes–Einstein relation in valence-limited systems, with two caveats: (i) the diffusion constant requires a finite-size correction, at least at the intermediate density we investigate, and (ii) there is the onset of a breakdown that appears at the lowest temperatures considered. Finally, our results show that the storage and loss moduli of mixtures of divalent and M-valent particles exhibit an apparent power-law dependence on frequency, hinting at the possibility of using the composition to finely tune the rheological response of these materials. Our results compare well with literature experimental data on valence-limited DNA nanostars. In addition, the wealth of data we present and analyze here will help develop and test theoretical frameworks aimed at describing the dynamics of flexible limited-valence particles that self-assemble into disordered networks. This study introduces recommendations for conducting molecular simulations of vapor adsorption, with an emphasis on enhancing the accuracy, reproducibility, and comparability of results. The first aspect we address is consistency in the implementation of some details of typical molecular models, including tail corrections and cutoff distances, due to their significant influence on generated data. We highlight the importance of explicitly calculating the saturation pressures at relevant temperatures using methods such as Gibbs ensemble Monte Carlo simulations and illustrate some pitfalls in extrapolating saturation pressures using this method. For grand canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) simulations, the input fugacity is usually calculated using an equation of state, which often requires the critical parameters of the fluid. We show the importance of using critical parameters derived from the simulation with the same model to ensure internal consistency between the simulated explicit adsorbate phase and the implicit bulk phase in GCMC. We show the advantages of presenting isotherms on a relative pressure scale to facilitate easier comparison among models and with experiment. Extending these guidelines to a practical case study, we evaluate the performance of various isoreticular metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) in adsorption cooling applications. We develop a theory to calculate structural correlations and thermodynamic properties of a fluid confined in a random porous solid medium (matrix). We used density functional formalism to derive an annealed averaged expression for the density profile and excess free energy of fluid arising due to random fields of a particular realization of the matrix. After performing the second average over the quenched-disordered variables, the excess free energy is organized to give one- and two-body potentials for fluid particles. The average over disorder reduces the system to an effective one-component system of fluid in which particles feel one-body (external) potential and interact via effective pair potential. The effective pair potential is a sum of the bare (the one in the pure fluid) and the matrix-induced potential. The resulting partition function involves only fluid variables. Equations are derived for fluid–fluid and fluid–matrix correlation functions and for free energy, pressure, and chemical potential of the fluid. The theory is applied to a model system of hard spheres and results for the effective pair potential, correlation functions, and thermodynamic properties are reported. The effective pair potential is found to be attractive at the contact and develops a repulsive peak before decaying to zero. Results for pair correlation function and structure factor are compared with simulation results for several fluid densities at two matrix densities. The focus of our study is an in-depth investigation of the quantum effects associated with the surface tension and other thermodynamic properties of nanoscopic liquid drops. The behavior of drops of quantum Lennard-Jones fluids is investigated with path-integral Monte Carlo simulations, and the test-area method is used to determine the surface tension of the spherical vapor–liquid interface. As the thermal de Broglie wavelength, λB, becomes more significant, the average density of the liquid drop decreases, with the drop becoming mechanically unstable at large wavelengths. As a consequence, the surface tension is found to decrease monotonically with λB, vanishing altogether for dominant quantum interactions. Quantum effects can be significant, leading to values that are notably lower than the classical thermodynamic limit, particularly for smaller drops. For planar interfaces (with infinite periodicity in the direction parallel to the interface), quantum effects are much less significant with the same values of λB but are, nevertheless, consequential for values representative of hydrogen or helium-4 at low temperatures corresponding to vapor–liquid coexistence. Large quantum effects are found for small drops of molecules with quantum interactions corresponding to water, ethane, methanol, and carbon dioxide, even at ambient conditions. The notable decrease in the density and tension has important consequences in reducing the Gibbs free-energy barrier of a nucleating cluster, enhancing the nucleation kinetics of liquid drops and of bubble formation. Measurements of local density fluctuations are crucial to characterizing the interfacial properties of equilibrium fluids. A specific case that has been well-explored involves the heightened compressibility of water near hydrophobic entities. Commonly, a spatial profile of local fluctuation strength is constructed from the measurements of the mean and variance of solvent particle number fluctuations in a set of contiguous subvolumes of the system adjacent to the solvo-/hydrophobe. An alternative measure proposed by Evans and Stewart [J. Phys.: Condens. Matter 27, 194111 (2015)] defines a local compressibility profile in terms of the chemical potential derivative of the spatial number density profile. Using Grand canonical Monte Carlo simulation, we compare and contrast the efficacy of these two approaches for a Lennard-Jones solvent at spherical and planar solvophobic interfaces and SPC/E water at a hydrophobic spherical solute. Our principal findings are as follows: (i) the local compressibility profile χ(r) of Evans and Stewart is considerably more sensitive to variations in the strength of local density fluctuations than the spatial fluctuation profile F (r) and can resolve much more detailed structure; and (ii) while the local compressibility profile is essentially independent of the choice of spatial discretization used to construct the profile, the spatial fluctuation profile exhibits a strong systematic dependence on the size of the subvolumes on which the profile is defined. An exciton–polariton condensate is a hybrid light–matter state in the quantum fluid phase. The photonic component endows it with characters of spin, as represented by circular polarization. Spin-polarization can form stochastically for quasi-equilibrium exciton–polariton condensates at parallel momentum vector k|| ∼ 0 from bifurcation or deterministically for propagating condensates at k|| > 0 from the optical spin-Hall effect (OSHE). Here, we report deterministic spin-polarization in exciton–polariton condensates at k|| ∼ 0 in microcavities containing methylammonium lead bromide perovskite (CH3NH3PbBr3) single crystals under non-resonant and linearly polarized excitation. We observe two energetically split condensates with opposite circular polarizations and attribute this observation to the presence of strong birefringence, which introduces a large OSHE at k|| ∼ 0 and pins the condensates in a particular spin state. Such spin-polarized exciton–polariton condensates may serve not only as circularly polarized laser sources but also as effective alternatives to ultracold atom Bose–Einstein condensates in quantum simulators of many-body spin–orbit coupling processes. It is shown that the transport coefficients (self-diffusion, shear viscosity, and thermal conductivity) of the Weeks–Chandler–Andersen (WCA) fluid along isotherms exhibit a freezing density scaling (FDS). The functional form of this FDS is essentially the same or closely related to those in the Lennard-Jones fluid, hard-sphere fluid, and some liquefied noble gases. This proves that this FDS represents a quasi-universal corresponding state principle for simple classical fluids with steep interactions. Some related aspects, such as a Stokes–Einstein relation without a hydrodynamic diameter and gas-to-liquid dynamical crossover, are briefly discussed. Anharmonic effects play a crucial role in determining thermochemical properties of liquids and gases. For such extended phases, the inclusion of anharmonicity in reliable electronic structure methods is computationally extremely demanding, and hence, anharmonic effects are often lacking in thermochemical calculations. In this study, we apply the quantum cluster equilibrium method to transfer density functional theory calculations at the cluster level to the macroscopic, liquid, and gaseous phase of hydrogen fluoride. This allows us to include anharmonicity, either via vibrational self-consistent field calculations for smaller clusters or using a regression model for larger clusters. We obtain the structural composition of the fluid phases in terms of the population of different clusters as well as isobaric heat capacities as an example for thermodynamic properties. We study the role of anharmonicities for these analyses and observe that, in particular, the dominating structural motifs are rather sensitive to the anharmonicity in vibrational frequencies. The regression model proves to be a promising way to get access to anharmonic features, and the extension to more sophisticated machine-learning models is promising. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Entropy scaling is applied to the shear viscosity, self-diffusion coefficient, and thermal conductivity of simple monatomic fluids. An extensive molecular dynamics simulation series is performed to obtain these transport properties and the residual entropy of three potential model classes with variable repulsive exponents: n, 6 Mie (n = 9, 12, 15, and 18), Buckingham's exponential-six (α = 12, 14, 18, and 30), and Tang–Toennies (αT = 4.051, 4.275, and 4.600). A wide range of liquid and supercritical gas- and liquid-like states is covered with a total of 1120 state points. Comparisons to equations of state, literature data, and transport property correlations are made. Although the absolute transport property values within a given potential model class may strongly depend on the repulsive exponent, it is found that the repulsive steepness plays a negligible role when entropy scaling is applied. Hence, the plus-scaled transport properties of n, 6 Mie, exponential-six, and Tang–Toennies fluids lie basically on one master curve, which closely corresponds with entropy scaling correlations for the Lennard-Jones fluid. This trend is confirmed by literature data of n, 6 Mie, and exponential-six fluids. Furthermore, entropy scaling holds for state points where the Pearson correlation coefficient R is well below 0.9. The condition R > 0.9 for strongly correlating liquids is thus not necessary for the successful application of entropy scaling, pointing out that isomorph theory may be a part of a more general framework that is behind the success of entropy scaling. Electro-osmotic flow (EOF) is a phenomenon where fluid motion occurs in porous materials or micro/nano-channels when an external electric field is applied. In the particular example of single-molecule electrophoresis using single nanopores, the role of EOF on the translocation velocity of the analyte molecule through the nanopore is not fully understood. The complexity arises from a combination of effects from hydrodynamics in restricted environments, electrostatics emanating from charge decorations and geometry of the pores. We address this fundamental issue using the Poisson–Nernst–Planck and Navier–Stokes (PNP–NS) equations for cylindrical solid-state nanopores and three representative protein nanopores (α-hemolysin, MspA, and CsgG). We present the velocity profiles inside the nanopores as a function of charge decoration and geometry of the pore and applied electric field. We report several unexpected results: (a) The apparent charges of the protein nanopores are different from their net charge and the surface charge of the whole protein geometry, and the net charge of inner surface is consistent with the apparent charge. (b) The fluid velocity depends non-monotonically on voltage. The three protein nanopores exhibit unique EOF and velocity–voltage relations, which cannot be simply deduced from their net charge. Furthermore, effective point mutations can significantly change both the direction and the magnitude of EOF. The present computational analysis offers an opportunity to further understand the origins of the speed of transport of charged macromolecules in restricted space and to design desirable nanopores for tuning the speed of macromolecules through nanopores. A new free-energy functional is proposed for inhomogeneous associating fluids. The general formulation of Wertheim's thermodynamic perturbation theory is considered as the starting point of the derivation. We apply the hypotheses of the statistical associating fluid theory in the classical density functional theory (DFT) framework to obtain a tractable expression of the free-energy functional for inhomogeneous associating fluids. Specific weighted functions are introduced in our framework to describe association interactions for a fluid under confinement. These weighted functions have a mathematical structure similar to the weighted densities of the fundamental-measure theory (i.e., they can be expressed as convolution products) such that they can be efficiently evaluated with Fourier transforms in a 3D space. The resulting free-energy functional can be employed to determine the microscopic structure of inhomogeneous associating fluids of arbitrary 3D geometry. The new model is first compared with Monte Carlo simulations and previous versions of DFT for a planar hard wall system in order to check its consistency in a 1D case. As an example of application in a 3D configuration, we then investigate the extreme confinement of an associating hard-sphere fluid inside an anisotropic open cavity with a shape that mimics a simplified model of zeolite. Both the density distribution and the corresponding molecular bonding profile are given, revealing complementary information to understand the structure of the associating fluid inside the cavity network. The impact of the degree of association on the preferential positions of the molecules inside the cavity is investigated as well as the competition between association and steric effect on adsorption. We present a comprehensive study using dissipative particle dynamics simulations to investigate phase separation kinetics (PSK) in three-dimensional (3d) polymeric fluids under random photo-illumination. We consider two scenarios: polymer blends with active radicals at one end of each immiscible chain and block copolymer (BCP) melts with photosensitive bonds linking incompatible blocks. The phase separation (PS) is induced by temperature quench of the initial homogeneously mixed system. Simultaneously, the system experiences random photo-illumination, simulated by two concurrent random events: (a) the recombination of active radicals in polymer blends and (b) the breaking of photosensitive bonds in BCP chains. Variations in the bond-breaking probability, Pb, mimic the change in light intensity. The length scale follows power law growth, R(t) ∼ tϕ, where ϕ represents the growth exponent. Increasing Pb results in a gradual transition in growth kinetics from micro-PS to macro-PS, accompanied by corresponding transition probabilities for both systems. Micro-PSK dominates the evolution process at low Pb values. The scaling functions exhibit data overlap for most scaled distances, indicating the statistical self-similarity of evolving patterns. Our study enhances the understanding of PSK in polymeric fluids, revealing the impact of photosensitive bonds and active radicals. The dynamics of many multiphase fluid systems involve the thinning and eventual break up of a slender fluid filament or a liquid jet. The interfacial instability that controls the rate of jet thinning depends on the relative magnitudes of capillary, viscous, and inertial stresses. Surfactants add an additional layer of physicochemical dynamics by reducing the surface tension of the interface and introducing reverse Marangoni flows in response to surface concentration gradients. Surfactants may also introduce an intrinsic surface rheology that affects jet thinning. Quantifying these effects has been a significant problem in chemical physics and a topic of key research interest. Recent studies have shown that insoluble surfactants delay thread thinning and suppress instabilities in Newtonian jets. However, the role of surfactant solubility in liquid jet stability is still unknown. In this work, we use linear stability analysis to quantitatively show the stabilizing effects of Marangoni stresses, surfactant adsorption and desorption time, and intermolecular forces upon adsorption. We highlight the seemingly indistinguishable way in which various surfactant properties result in the same outcome. We also identify a surface dissipative contribution that arises from the interplay of Marangoni flows with finite adsorption and desorption, which acts as an "apparent" surface viscosity. We verify predictions of our linear stability results against numerical simulations and conclude by noting that tuning surface activity and kinetics of adsorbed surfactants or particles can potentially suppress droplet formation, which is of significant impact in the printing industry and in the control of the spread of aerosols. Beyond well-documented confinement and surface effects arising from the large internal surface and severely confining porosity of nanoporous hosts, the transport of nanoconfined fluids remains puzzling in many aspects. With striking examples such as memory, i.e., non-viscous effects, intermittent dynamics, and surface barriers, the dynamics of fluids in nanoconfinement challenge classical formalisms (e.g., random walk, viscous/advective transport)—especially for molecular pore sizes. In this context, while molecular frameworks such as intermittent Brownian motion, free volume theory, and surface diffusion are available to describe the self-diffusion of a molecularly confined fluid, a microscopic theory for collective diffusion (i.e., permeability), which characterizes the flow induced by a thermodynamic gradient, is lacking. Here, to fill this knowledge gap, we invoke the concept of "De Gennes narrowing," which relates the wavevector-dependent collective diffusivity D0(q) to the fluid structure factor S(q). First, using molecular simulation for a simple yet representative fluid confined in a prototypical solid (zeolite), we unravel an essential coupling between the wavevector-dependent collective diffusivity and the structural ordering imposed on the fluid by the crystalline nanoporous host. Second, despite this complex interplay with marked Bragg peaks in the fluid structure, the fluid collective dynamics is shown to be accurately described through De Gennes narrowing. Moreover, in contrast to the bulk fluid, the departure from De Gennes narrowing for the confined fluid in the macroscopic limit remains small as the fluid/solid interactions in severe confinement screen collective effects and, hence, weaken the wavevector dependence of collective transport. The significance of interfacial thermal resistance in the thermal conductivity of nanofluids is not well understood, in part because of the absence of measurements of this quantity. Here, we study the interfacial thermal resistance for metal–oil nanofluids of interest as heat transfer fluids for concentrating solar power, using density functional theory and molecular dynamics simulations. Insights on the role of chemical interactions in determining the interfacial thermal resistance are revealed. The results presented here showcase a general picture in which the stronger the chemical interactions between species at the interface, the lower the associated interfacial thermal resistance. The implications toward nanofluid design are discussed. We show that, for this important family of metal–oil nanofluids, the interfacial thermal resistance values are low enough so that it is possible to afford a reduction in particle size, minimizing stability and rheological issues while still offering enhancement in the effective thermal conductivity with respect to the base fluid. We present a derivation from the first principles of the coupled equations of motion of an active self-diffusiophoretic Janus motor and the hydrodynamic densities of its fluid environment that are nonlinearly displaced from equilibrium. The derivation makes use of time-dependent projection operator techniques defined in terms of slowly varying coarse-grained microscopic densities of the fluid species number, total momentum, and energy. The exact equations of motion are simplified using time scale arguments, resulting in Markovian equations for the Janus motor linear and angular velocities with average forces and torques that depend on the fluid densities. For a large colloid, the fluid equations are separated into bulk and interfacial contributions, and the conditions under which the dynamics of the fluid densities can be accurately represented by bulk hydrodynamic equations subject to boundary conditions on the colloid are determined. We show how the results for boundary conditions based on continuum theory can be obtained from the molecular description and provide Green–Kubo expressions for all transport coefficients, including the diffusiophoretic coupling and the slip coefficient. Henchman's approximate harmonic model of liquids is extended to predict the thermodynamic behavior along lines of constant excess entropy ("isomorphs") in the liquid and supercritical fluid regimes of the Lennard-Jones (LJ) potential phase diagram. Simple analytic expressions based on harmonic cell models of fluids are derived for the isomorph lines, one accurate version of which only requires as input parameters the average repulsive and attractive parts of the potential energy per particle at a single reference state point on the isomorph. The new harmonic cell routes for generating the isomorph lines are compared with those predicted by the literature molecular dynamics (MD) methods, the small step MD method giving typically the best agreement over a wide density and temperature range. Four routes to calculate the excess entropy in the MD simulations are compared, which includes employing Henchman's formulation, Widom's particle insertion method, thermodynamic integration, and parameterized LJ equations of state. The thermodynamic integration method proves to be the most computationally efficient. The excess entropy is resolved into contributions from the repulsive and attractive parts of the potential. The repulsive and attractive components of the potential energy, excess Helmholtz free energy, and excess entropy along a fluid isomorph are predicted to vary as ∼T−1/2 in the high temperature limit by an extension of classical inverse power potential perturbation theory statistical mechanics, trends that are confirmed by the MD simulations. Coarse-graining of fluids is challenging because fluid particles are unbound and diffuse long distances in time. One approach creates coarse-grain variables that group all particles within a region centered on specific points in space and accounts for the movement of particles among such regions. In our previous work, we showed that in many cases, potential interactions for such a scheme adopted a generalized quadratic form, whose parameters depend on means, variances, and correlation coefficients among the coarse-grain variables. In this work, we use statistical mechanics to derive analytic expressions for these parameters, using properties of the fluid, including pair distribution functions. These expressions are compared against simulation-derived values and shown to be in good agreement. This approach can be used to calculate a priori the potential for any homogeneous, simple fluid, without the need for fitting procedures or matching, thus increasing the ease of use of this coarse-grain scheme and creating a foundation for large-scale bottom-up simulations. This paper investigates the optimization of the inner thermal layout in nanofluid-filled horizontal annular pipes under natural convection conditions. Two-dimensional models of annular pipes are established using a numerical simulation approach. Then, using this as the simulation tool, the layouts of single-, triple-, and quadruple-heat-source annular pipes are optimized. The coordinates of the inner cylinders are defined as the decision variables, and the average Nusselt number (Nu) on the cold wall surface as the objective function. For the single-cylinder model, both the Bayesian optimization algorithm (BOA) and the genetic algorithm (GA) derive the same results: an axisymmetric layout where the single heat source is positioned slightly above the axis of the annulus. However, the BOA takes much less computational time than the GA and, consequently, is chosen for cases with more complex geometry. The optimization layout of the three-cylinder model also shows an axisymmetric distribution, while the result for the four-cylinder model presents a centrally symmetric distribution. Compared to the original average Nu, the optimized ones are enhanced by 17.83%, 8.36%, and 6.18% for single-, triple-, and quadruple-heat-source annular pipes, respectively. We derive a hierarchy of equations, which allow a general n-body distribution function to be measured by test-particle insertion of between 1 and n particles. We apply it to measure the pair and three-body distribution functions in a simple fluid using snapshots from Monte Carlo simulations in the grand canonical ensemble. The resulting distribution functions obtained from insertion methods are compared with the conventional distance-histogram method: the insertion approach is shown to overcome the drawbacks of the histogram method, offering enhanced structural resolution and a more straightforward normalization. At high particle densities, the insertion method starts breaking down, which can be delayed by utilizing the underlying hierarchical structure of the insertion method. A model system of identical particles interacting via a hard-sphere potential is essential in condensed matter physics; it helps to understand in and out of equilibrium phenomena in complex fluids, such as colloidal dispersions. Yet, most of the fixed time-step algorithms to study the transport properties of those systems have drawbacks due to the mathematical nature of the interparticle potential. Because of this, mapping a hard-sphere potential onto a soft potential has been recently proposed [Báez et al., J. Chem. Phys. 149, 164907 (2018)]. More specifically, using the second virial coefficient criterion, one can set a route to estimate the parameters of the soft potential that accurately reproduces the thermodynamic properties of a monocomponent hard-sphere system. However, real colloidal dispersions are multicomponent or polydisperse, making it important to find an efficient way to extend the potential model for dealing with such kind of many-body systems. In this paper, we report on the extension and applicability of the second virial coefficient criterion to build a description that correctly captures the phenomenology of both multicomponent and polydisperse hard-sphere dispersions. To assess the accuracy of the continuous potentials, we compare the structure of soft polydisperse systems with their hard-core counterpart. We also contrast the structural and thermodynamic properties of soft binary mixtures with those obtained through mean-field approximations and the Ornstein–Zernike equation for the two-component hard-sphere dispersion. Based on the variational field theory framework, we extend our previous mean-field formalism [Y. A. Budkov and A. L. Kolesnikov, JStatMech 2022, 053205.2022], taking into account the electrostatic correlations of the ions. We employ a general covariant approach and derive a total stress tensor that considers the electrostatic correlations of ions. This is accomplished through an additional term that depends on the autocorrelation function of the local electric field fluctuations. Utilizing the derived total stress tensor and applying the mechanical equilibrium condition, we establish a general expression for the disjoining pressure of the Coulomb fluids, confined in a pore with a slit-like geometry. Using this equation, we derive an asymptotic expression for the disjoining pressure in a slit-like pore with non-electrified conductive walls. Present theory is the basis for future modeling of the mechanical stresses that occur in electrode pores with conductive charged walls, immersed in liquid phase electrolytes beyond the mean-field theory. This study presents a new equation of state (EOS) for charged hard sphere fluids that incorporates ion-ion association. The EOS is developed using the Debye–Hückel (DH) theory, reference cavity approximation, and Wertheim's theory. Predictive accuracy is evaluated by comparing the model's predictions with Monte Carlo simulations for various charged hard-sphere fluids. The assessment focuses on mean ionic activity coefficient, individual ionic activity coefficient, and osmotic coefficients. The results demonstrate good agreement between the model and simulations, indicating its success for different electrolyte systems. Incorporating ion-ion association improves accuracy compared to the DH theory. The importance of the cavity function and ion-dipole interactions is emphasized in accurately representing structural properties. Overall, the developed EOS shows promising predictive capabilities for charged hard sphere fluids, providing validation and highlighting the significance of ion-ion association in thermodynamic predictions of electrolyte solutions. Chemically driven fluids can demix to form condensed droplets that exhibit phase behaviors not observed at equilibrium. In particular, nonequilibrium interfacial properties can emerge when the chemical reactions are driven differentially between the interior and exterior of the phase-separated droplets. Here, we use a minimal model to study changes in the interfacial tension between coexisting phases away from equilibrium. Simulations of both droplet nucleation and interface roughness indicate that the nonequilibrium interfacial tension can either be increased or decreased relative to its equilibrium value, depending on whether the driven chemical reactions are accelerated or decelerated within the droplets. Pharmaceutical fluid processing is a procedure of medication manufacturing, utilizing a particular kind of heat transfer in a biofluid designed to maintain the desired temperature for extended periods. Choosing a suitable fluid can have a positive effect on the operating efficacy of the system and lengthen the fluid's and system's life spans. As an outcome of this development, we investigate the influence of the partial slip and gyrotactic microorganisms on the peristaltic transport of a magnetohydrodynamic Ree–Eyring nanofluid via an aligned porous conduit with thermal radiation, energy generation, along with cross and double diffusion effects. By invoking suitable nondimensional parameters, the proposed dimensional governing equations are transformed into a system of dimensionless partial differential equations. The analytical solutions for the system of partial differential equations are obtained by incorporating the homotopy perturbation method. Further, tabular and graphical presentations are used to examine the characteristics of the various sundry parameters on the temperature, concentration, motile microorganism density, axial velocity, trapping, and other relevant flow quantities. The observations of this study indicate that the Darcy number and thermal Grashof number have the capability to enhance the velocity distribution of the Ree–Eyring nanofluid in the presence of bioconvection. The trapped bolus size and the skin friction coefficient increase noticeably because of an enhancement in the Ree–Eyring fluid parameter. Also, the Darcy number and the Hall current parameter increase the skin friction coefficient. Furthermore, validation of the results is carried out to examine the consistency between the current and the previous findings for some special cases and excellent agreements are found. The behavior of four algebraic closure models for anomalous electron transport is investigated using a fluid Hall thruster code. The models, which were selected because they have been previously described in the literature, are calibrated against a baseline experimental condition of a 9-kW-class magnetically shielded Hall thruster operating at 300 V and 15 A on xenon propellant. The extensibility of the models is then assessed by using this calibrated model to simulate three additional operating conditions—300 V and 30 A, 600 V and 15 A, and 300 V and 15 A operating on krypton propellant. The quality of the model prediction is quantified by comparing the model outputs to experimental measurements of discharge current, thrust, and ion velocity. It is found that while none of the models can predict the ion acceleration characteristics accurately, some compare favorably in terms of the scaling of thrust and discharge current across operating conditions. The limitations of the models are attributed to the coupling between the functional scaling of the closure models with respect to the local plasma properties and the fluid model. The role of the electron energy balance in this coupling is also highlighted. The dynamics of a tracer particle in a bath of quasi-hard colloidal spheres is studied by Langevin dynamics simulations and mode coupling theory (MCT); the tracer radius is varied from equal to up to seven times larger than the bath particles radius. In the simulations, two cases are considered: freely diffusing tracer (passive microrheology) and tracer pulled with a constant force (active microrheology). Both cases are connected by linear response theory for all tracer sizes. It links both the stationary and transient regimes of the pulled tracer (for low forces) with the equilibrium correlation functions; the velocity of the pulled tracer and its displacement are obtained from the velocity auto-correlation function and the mean squared displacement, respectively. The MCT calculations give insight into the physical mechanisms: At short times, the tracer rattles in its cage of neighbours, with the frequency increasing linearly with the tracer radius asymptotically. The long-time tracer diffusion coefficient from passive microrheology, which agrees with the inverse friction coefficient from the active case, arises from the transport of transverse momentum around the tracer. It can be described with the Brinkman equation for the transverse flow field obtained in extension of MCT, but cannot be recovered from the MCT kernel coupling to densities only. The dynamics of the bath particles is also studied; for the unforced tracer the dynamics is unaffected. When the tracer is pulled, the velocity field in the bath follows the prediction of the Brinkman model, but different from the case of a Newtonian fluid. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A comparison is made between the three principal methods for the analysis of neutron and x-ray diffraction data from noble gas fluids by direct Fourier transform. All three methods (standard Fourier transform, Lorch modification, and Soper–Barney modification) are used to analyze four different sets of diffraction data from noble gas fluids. The results are compared to the findings of a full-scale real-space structure determination, namely, Empirical Potential Structure Refinement. Conclusions are drawn on the relative merits of the three Fourier transform methods, what information can be reliably obtained using each method, and which method is most suitable for the analysis of different kinds of diffraction data. Investigating thermal convection within porous media permeated by fluids and micro-organisms stands as a significant inquiry with broad relevance across geophysical and engineering domains. Studying convection within porous media can aid in controlling temperature and nutrient distribution for cell growth and tissue regeneration, as well as the efficiency of biofuel fermentation and production processes. Hence, the primary objective of this study is to investigate the influence of time-periodic gravitational forces on Darcy–Brinkman bio-thermal convection within a porous medium layer. This medium is saturated with a Newtonian fluid that encompasses gyrotactic micro-organisms. The gravity modulation amplitude is assumed to be very small. A weak nonlinear stability analysis is performed to analyze the stationary mode of bioconvection. The heat transport, measured by the Nusselt number, is governed by a non-autonomous Ginzburg–Landau equation. The research explores the influence of several parameters on heat transport, including the Vadaszs number, the modified bioconvective Rayleigh–Darcy number, cell eccentricity, modulation frequency, and modulation amplitude. The results are presented graphically, illustrating the impact of these parameters on heat transfer. The findings reveal that both the Vadaszs number and the modulation amplitude have a positive effect on heat transfer, enhancing the process. On the other hand, an increase in the modified bioconvection Rayleigh–Darcy number and cell eccentricity leads to a decrease in heat transfer. Furthermore, a comparison between the modulated and unmodulated systems indicates that the modulated systems have a more significant influence on the stability problem compared to the unmodulated systems. In this paper, we apply a theoretical model for fluid state thermodynamics to investigate simulated water in supercooled conditions. This model, which we recently proposed and applied to sub- and super-critical fluid water [Zanetti-Polzi et al., J. Chem. Phys. 156(4), 44506 (2022)], is based on a combination of the moment-generating functions of the enthalpy and volume fluctuations as provided by two gamma distributions and provides the free energy of the system as well as other relevant thermodynamic quantities. The application we make here provides a thermodynamic description of supercooled water fully consistent with that expected by crossing the liquid–liquid Widom line, indicating the presence of two distinct liquid states. In particular, the present model accurately reproduces the Widom line temperatures estimated with other two-state models and well describes the heat capacity anomalies. Differently from previous models, according to our description, a cluster of molecules that extends beyond the first hydration shell is necessary to discriminate between the statistical fluctuation regimes typical of the two liquid states. We investigate diffusion in fluids near surfaces that may be coated with polymer films. We first consider diffusion in hard sphere fluids near a planar hard wall. We specifically consider color diffusion, where hard spheres are labeled A or B but are otherwise identical in all respects. In this inhomogeneous fluid, we consider a surface reaction–diffusion problem. At the left wall, a particle of species A is converted to one of species B upon a wall collision. At the opposing wall, the reverse reaction takes place: B → A. Using molecular dynamics simulation, we study the steady state of this system. We demonstrate that in the homogeneous region, a diffusing particle is subject to an equilibrium oscillatory force, the solvation force, that arises from the interfacial structuring of the fluid at the wall. For the hard sphere/hard wall system, the solvation force can be determined in various ways. We use the solvation force [the potential of mean force (PMF)] to solve the continuum diffusion equation. This provides an adequate and accurate description of the reaction–diffusion problem. The analysis is then extended to consider both color diffusion in the presence of a slowly varying one-body field such as gravity and a more applied problem of diffusion of free species through a surface film consisting of tethered chains. In both cases, the PMF experienced by the free particles is affected, but the diffusion problem can be treated in the same way as for the simpler hard sphere color diffusion case. Randomly organizing hyperuniform fluid induced by reciprocal activation is a non-equilibrium fluid with vanishing density fluctuations at large length scales such as crystals. Here, we extend this new state of matter to a closed manifold, namely a spherical surface. We find that the random organization on a spherical surface behaves similar to that in two dimensional Euclidean space, and the absorbing transition on a sphere also belongs to the conserved directed percolation universality class. Moreover, the reciprocal activation can also induce a non-equilibrium hyperuniform fluid on a sphere. The spherical structure factor at the absorbing transition and the non-equilibrium hyperuniform fluid phases are scaled as S(l → 0) ∼ (l/R)0.45 and S(l → 0) ∼ l(l + 1)/R2, respectively, which are both hyperuniform according to the definition of hyperuniformity on a sphere with l, the wave number, and R, the radius of the spherical surface. We also consider the impact of inertia in realistic hyperuniform fluids, and it is found only by adding an extra length-scale, above which hyperuniform scaling appears. The velocity autocorrelation function (VACF) encapsulates extensive information about a fluid's molecular-structural and hydrodynamic properties. We address the following fundamental question: How well can a purely hydrodynamic description recover the molecular features of a fluid as exhibited by the VACF? To this end, we formulate a bona fide hydrodynamic theory of the tagged-particle VACF for simple fluids. Our approach is distinguished from previous efforts in two key ways: collective hydrodynamic modes and tagged-particle self-motion are modeled by linear hydrodynamic equations; the fluid's spatial velocity power spectrum is identified as a necessary initial condition for the momentum current correlation. This formulation leads to a natural physical interpretation of the VACF as a superposition of products of quasinormal hydrodynamic modes weighted commensurately with the spatial velocity power spectrum, the latter of which appears to physically bridge continuum hydrodynamical behavior and discrete-particle kinetics. The methodology yields VACF calculations quantitatively on par with existing approaches for liquid noble gases and alkali metals. Furthermore, we obtain a new, hydrodynamic form of the self-intermediate scattering function whose description has been extended to low densities where the Schmidt number is of order unity; various calculations are performed for gaseous and supercritical argon to support the general validity of the theory.
