Introduction: This study aimed to investigate the effects of chronic swimming exercise and vitamin E administration on elemental levels in the bone tissue of epileptic rats. Methods: Forty-eight rats were divided into six groups: Control, Swimming, Swimming + vitamin E, Swimming + Epilepsy, Swimming + Epilepsy + vitamin E, and Epilepsy. Vitamin E was administered to the animals chronically by gavage at a dose of 500 mg/kg every other day for 3 months. Epileptiform activity was induced with penicillin in animals 24 hours after the last vitamin E intake. The exercise program consisted of daily 30-minute swimming sessions. At the end of the treatment period, the levels of calcium, chromium, copper, iron, magnesium, manganese, lead, and zinc (µg/gram tissue) in bone tissue samples were measured using an atomic emission device. Results: The results showed that all epileptic groups had significantly lower bone chromium levels compared to the control groups (p<0.05). The epileptic, and epileptic swimming groups had the lowest levels of bone calcium, magnesium, and zinc (p<0.05). Vitamin E administration resulted in a significant increase in bone calcium, magnesium, and zinc levels in the epileptic swimming group with vitamin E compared to the epileptic and epileptic swimming groups. (p<0.05). Conclusion: The findings of the study show that the administration of vitamin E improves calcium, magnesium, and zinc metabolism in the deteriorated bone tissue of the epileptic rat model. Background. Aliarcobacter butzleri is a Gram-negative, curved or spiral-shaped, microaerophilic bacterium and causes human infections, specifically diarrhea, fever, and sepsis. The research objective of this study was to employ computer-aided drug design techniques to identify potential natural product inhibitors of a vital enzyme in this bacterium. The pyrimidine biosynthesis pathway in its core genome fraction is crucial for its survival and presents a potential target for novel therapeutics. Hence, novel small molecule inhibitors were identified (from traditional Chinese medicinal (TCM) compound library) against it, which may be used for possible curbing of infection by A. butzleri. Methods. A comprehensive subtractive genomics approach was utilized to identify a key enzyme (orotidine- 5 ′ -phosphate decarboxylase) cluster conserved in the core genome fraction of A. butzleri. It was selected for inhibitor screening due to its vital role in pyrimidine biosynthesis. TCM library (n > 36,000 compounds) was screened against it using pharmacophore model based on orotidylic acid (control), and the obtained lead-like molecules were subjected to structural docking using AutoDock Vina. The top-scoring compounds, ZINC70454134, ZINC85632684, and ZINC85632721, underwent further scrutiny via a combination of physiological-based pharmacokinetics, toxicity assessment, and atomic-scale dynamics simulations (100 ns). Results. Among the screened compounds, ZINC70454134 displayed the most favorable characteristics in terms of binding, stability, absorption, and safety parameters. Overall, traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) compounds exhibited high bioavailability, but in diseased states (cirrhosis, renal impairment, and steatosis), there was a significant decrease in absorption, Cmax, and AUC of the compounds compared to the healthy state. Furthermore, MD simulation demonstrated that the ODCase-ZINC70454134 complex had a superior overall binding affinity, supported by PCA proportion of variance and eigenvalue rank analysis. These favorable characteristics underscore its potential as a promising drug candidate. Conclusion. The computer-aided drug design approach employed for this study helped expedite the discovery of antibacterial compounds against A. butzleri, offering a cost-effective and efficient approach to address infection by it. It is recommended that ZINC70454134 should be considered for further experimental analysis due to its indication as a potential therapeutic agent for combating A. butzleri infections. Coffee is one of the most popular non-alcoholic beverages, consumed as a raw material in different food sectors. The popularity of coffee is induced by its pleasant flavor, taste, and highly nutritious nature. However, the absorption of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) through preharvest, harvesting, and post-harvest stages makes it a potentially rich source. Essential elements are potentially toxic at a higher concentration than required for the human body to work. PTEs intake through food systems may lead to health risks, including mutagenicity, teratogenicity, carcinogenicity, and embryotoxic effects. The works of literature evaluating the eco-environmental risks posed by metals in agricultural areas in developing countries remains limited. This study sought to evaluate the environmental and ecological risks posed by metals in the intensively cultivated areas of the Amik Plain as well as to determine the origins of the metals. For this purpose, 137 soil samples were taken from agricultural production areas of the Amik Plain, and 11 metals (Al, Fe, Ni, Pb, Co, Cr, Cu, Mn, Zn, Cd and As) were examined in the samples. As Ni had the highest average enrichment factor (EF) value (8.04) when compared with the other metals, the soils were found to be significantly enriched with Ni. The Pearson correlation analysis and principal component analysis showed that the Zn concentration was controlled by lithogenic sources, while the Ni, Pb, Cd, Cr and Cu concentrations were controlled by both anthropogenic and lithogenic sources. Objectives: The objectives are to compare lead blood concentrations in veterinary workers using lead shielding with concentrations in a control population, to measure hand surface lead before and after use of shielding, and to compare hand surface lead with and without the use of disposable gloves worn under hand shielding. Methods: Blood and hand wipe samples were analyzed for lead using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Results: There was no difference in blood lead between exposed and control groups. After lead glove use, 69% (18/26) of hand surface lead samples from workers not using disposable gloves were greater than 500 μg, 42% (11/26) were greater than 1000 μg, and 12% (3/26) were greater than 2000 μg. The present study pertains to magnetoelectric coupling and energy storage analysis of (1 − x)BiFe0.95Mn0.05O3-xBaTiO3 (BFMO-BT) with x = 0.1, 0.2, 0.3 lead free solid solutions. BFMO-BT solid solutions possessed a cubic structure as confirmed from powder XRD and the Rietveld refinement. A maximum ferroelectric polarization of 0.82 μC/cm2 was observed in BFMO-0.3BT. BFMO-0.3BT exhibited a maximum energy storage density (WU) of 1.97 J/cm3 and an energy conversion efficiency of 81.7%. Enhanced bulk magnetization was associated with the lattice defects; however, it decreased with increased BT content. For BFMO-0.3BT, temperature dependent susceptibility, dielectric measurement, and differential scanning calorimetry measurement revealed the magnetic transition temperature to be 275 °C, 293 °C, and 223 °C, respectively. The linear magnetoelectric coupling coefficient was measured by quantifying change in maximum polarization with respect to the applied magnetic field and was found to be 28.55 mV cm−1 Oe for BFMO-0.3BT. The exact power optimization of a thermoelectric generator is performed under the simultaneous presence of internal and external irreversibilities—modeled as nonideal thermal contacts and Joule heating, respectively. We consider a modification of the constant properties model whereby thermal conductivity of the thermoelectric material has spatial dependence, giving an asymmetric fraction of the Joule heat dumped in each reservoir. In particular, with a linear form of this dependence, the heat leakage term drops out as well as Joule heat is dumped only on one side. Exact expressions for efficiency at maximum power in each of these regimes are derived and are compared at thermal impedance matching and close to equilibrium, where interesting, stepwise changes in efficiency at maximum power are observed. The present analysis leads to the inference that higher values of efficiency at maximum power are obtained when both internal and external irreversibilities are taken on the hot side. Purpose: The toxicity of lead (Pb) has been intensively studied, while the adverse effects in the population on a high-fat diet (HFD) remain unclear. This study compared the different biologic effects of Pb in CHOW and HFD-fed mice and investigated the important role that gut microbiota may play. Methods: C57BL/6 mice were fed a CHOW diet and HFD with or without 1 g/L Pb exposure through drinking water for 8 weeks. Using oral glucose tolerance test, histopathological observation, real-time fluorescence quantitative PCR, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, and 16S high-throughput sequencing to compare the Pb toxicity, fecal microbiota transplantation was conducted to investigate the key role of gut microbiota. Results: The metabolic disorders induced by HFD were aggravated by chronic Pb intake, and HFD exacerbated the Pb accumulation in the colon by 96%, 32% in blood, 27% in the liver, and 142% in tibiae. Concomitantly, Pb induced more serious colonic injury, further disturbing the composition of gut microbiota in the HFD-fed mice. Moreover, altered fecal microbiota by HFD and Pb directly mediated metabolic disorders and colonic damage in recipient mice, which emphasized the importance of gut microbiota. Conclusion: These findings indicated that the population with HFD has lower resistance and would face more security risks under Pb pollution, and pointed out the importance of assessing the health impacts of food contaminants in people with different dietary patterns. California's Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment has updated the comprehensive age-specific model of lead metabolism in humans published by Richard W. Leggett in 1993. The updated model, called Leggett+, was introduced in a peer-reviewed report in 2013. The Leggett + model simulates the relationship between blood lead and exposure in the workplace. Leggett + includes a workplace exposure model comprising respiratory tract intake (workplace lead inhaled by a worker) and uptake (lead absorbed into the blood from the respiratory tract plus uptake from ambient air and diet). The latter is calculated as intake times an inhalation transfer coefficient plus background uptake. An adjusted adult systemic model describes the metabolism of the absorbed lead. This paper provides details about the workplace exposure and uptake elements of Leggett+, an updated approach to calibrating an inhalation transfer coefficient, confirmation of the model's performance in predicting blood lead levels from workplace studies, and predictions of blood lead levels from simulated exposures to workplace airborne lead over a working lifetime. Blood lead relative to airborne lead concentrations in a standard workplace scenario predicted by Leggett + was similar to corresponding relationships from four published workplace studies. Leggett + predictions displayed a good fit to regression equations when other key factors were considered such as pre-employment blood lead and ongoing background intake of lead, workplace air concentration, lead aerosol characteristics, and worker activity levels. The comprehensive Leggett + model can simulate plausible workplace air–blood lead relationships from a broad range of worker exposures. The inhalation transfer coefficient of 0.30, derived from empirical data described in the 2013 report has been reexamined. The original estimate continues to represent a plausible mid-point for a coefficient derived from an expanded range of theoretical particle size distributions deposited in the upper and lower regions of the respiratory tract considering intake during sedentary and outdoor activity breathing scenarios. Objectives: Lead investigators in North Carolina found evidence that contaminated spices may contribute to children's elevated blood lead levels. We compared lead levels in samples of spices and other consumable products by country of purchase to inform consumer safety interventions and regulations. Methods: From February 1, 2011, through October 22, 2020, North Carolina lead investigators sampled spices and other consumable products from 103 homes of children with confirmed elevated blood lead levels. In 2017, the study team purchased 50 products frequently sampled during lead investigations, as a "market basket" sample, from local stores in or near Raleigh, North Carolina. The State Laboratory of Public Health analyzed 423 product samples using mass spectrometry. We extracted environmental sample results from lead investigations from the North Carolina Electronic Lead Surveillance System. Results: The median market basket lead result was 0.07 mg/kg (SD = 0.17); the maximum lead result was 0.88 mg/kg. The median home lead investigation sample result was 0.26 mg/kg (SD = 489.44); the maximum lead result was 6504.00 mg/kg in turmeric purchased in India. Among all samples, products purchased in India had more than triple the median lead levels (0.71 mg/kg) of those purchased in the United States (0.19 mg/kg). Conclusions: Purchasing spices in the United States is an action that consumers can take that may reduce their lead poisoning risk. Regulatory agencies should consider a lead limit of <1 mg/kg as attainable for spices sold in US stores and for ingredients of any foods that may be consumed by children. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

BACKGROUND: Elevating dietary calcium (Ca) intake can reduce metal(loid)oral bioavailability. However, the ability of a range of Ca minerals to reduce oral bioavailability of lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), and arsenic (As) from indoor dust remains unclear. OBJECTIVES: This study evaluated the ability of Ca minerals to reduce Pb, Cd, and As oral bioavailability from indoor dust and associated mechanisms. METHODS: A mouse bioassay was conducted to assess Pb, Cd, and As relative bioavailability (RBA) in three indoor dust samples, which were amended into mouse chow without and with addition of CaHPO4, CaCO3, Ca gluconate, Ca lactate, Ca aspartate, and Ca citrate at 200–5,000 μg/g Ca. The mRNA expression of Ca and phosphate (P) transporters involved in transcellular Pb, Cd and As transport in the duodenum of mice was quantified using real-time polymerase chain reaction. Serum 1,25-Dihydroxyvitamin D3 [1,25(OH)2D3], parathyroid hormone (PTH), and renal CYP27B1 activity controlling 1,25(OH)2D3 synthesis were measured using ELISA kits. Metal(loid) speciation in the feces of mice was characterized using X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy. RESULTS: In general, mice exposed to each of the Ca minerals exhibited lower Pb-, Cd-, and As-RBA for three dusts. However, RBAs with the different Ca minerals varied. Among minerals, mice fed dietary CaHPO4 did not exhibit lower duodenal mRNA expression of Ca transporters but did have the lowest Pb and Cd oral bioavailability at the highest Ca concentration (5,000 μg/g Ca; 51%-95% and 52 -74% lower in comparison with the control). Lead phosphate precipitates (e.g., chloropyromorphite) were observed in feces of mice fed dietary CaHPO4. In comparison, mice fed organic Ca minerals (Ca gluconate, Ca lactate, Ca aspartate, and Ca citrate) had lower duodenal mRNA expression of Ca transporters, but Pb and Cd oral bioavailability was higher than in mice fed CaHPO4. In terms of As, mice fed Ca aspartate exhibited the lowest As oral bioavailability at the highest Ca concentration (5,000 μg/g Ca; 41%-72% lower) and the lowest duodenal expression of P transporter (88% lower). The presence of aspartate was not associated with higher As solubility in the intestine. DISCUSSION: Our study used a mouse model of exposure to household dust with various concentrations and species of Ca to determine whether different Ca minerals can reduce bioavailability of Pb, Cd, and As in mice and elucidate the mechanism(s) involved. We demonstrate that the atom-based charge model implemented in the current versions of the density functional tight binding (DFTB) method fails to reproduce the correct charge distribution of a range of systems, including homonuclear molecules, graphene, and nanotubes, resulting in serious distortions in the electrostatic interactions for such systems caused by the missing quadrupole moments. In particular, this failure seriously impacts the long- and medium-range interaction energies of the DFTB plus dispersion (DFTB-D) model, leading to incorrect predictions of translational or rotational barriers in such systems. We show explicitly on examples of H2 and N2 that correct quadrupole moments—and consequently correct electrostatic interactions—can be restored in such systems by adding additional bond (ghost) sites to the homonuclear molecules. Attempts to determine the point charges associated with the additional sites using the usual Mulliken population analysis lead to unphysical results. Instead, these charges can be determined using the actual DFTB densities used in the parameterization process. For homonuclear molecules, we propose an extension to the DFTB-D model by adding charges that reproduce the physically correct quadrupolar charge distribution. The resulting DFTB-D-Q model greatly improves the rotational barriers for interactions of molecular hydrogen and nitrogen with benzene. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article discusses a study that assessed the extent of soil contamination from submarine and aerial lead sheathed communications cables (LSCC) as well as potential risks to children's health. The researchers measured the amount of soil lead levels at submarine sites in Louisiana and aerial sites in New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania using a Niton XL3t X-ray Fluorescence Analyzer. The results indicate that LSCC can be transported from the cables and contaminate surrounding soil and dust.

Objectives. To evaluate lead levels in tap water at licensed North Carolina child care facilities. Methods. Between July 2020 and October 2021, we enrolled 4005 facilities in a grant-funded, participatory science testing program. We identified risk factors associated with elevated first-draw lead levels using multiple logistic regression analysis. Results. By sample (n = 22 943), 3% of tap water sources exceeded the 10 parts per billion (ppb) North Carolina hazard level, whereas 25% of tap water sources exceeded 1 ppb, the American Academy of Pediatrics' reference level. By facility, at least 1 tap water source exceeded 1 ppb and 10 ppb at 56% and 12% of facilities, respectively. Well water reliance was the largest risk factor, followed by participation in Head Start programs and building age. We observed large variability between tap water sources within the same facility. Conclusions. Tap water in child care facilities is a potential lead exposure source for children. Given variability among tap water sources, it is imperative to test every source used for drinking and cooking so appropriate action can be taken to protect children's health. Objectives. To detail baseline drinking water sample lead concentrations and features of US state-level programs and policies to test school drinking water for lead in 7 states' operating programs between 2016 and 2018. Methods. We coded program and policy documents using structured content analysis protocols and analyzed state-provided data on lead concentration in drinking water samples collected in public schools during initial testing phases. Results. We analyzed data from 5688 public schools, representing 35% of eligible schools in 7 states. The number of samples per school varied. The proportion of schools identifying any sample lead concentration exceeding 5 parts per billion varied (13%–81%). Four states exceeded 20%. Other program features varied among states. Instances of lead above the state action level were identified in all states. Conclusions. In 2018, many US public school students attended schools in states without drinking water lead-testing programs. Testing all drinking water sources may be recommended. Public Health Implications. This study investigates heavy metals and naturally occurring radionuclide materials (NORM) possible presence and pollution rates in oil-based drilling fluids system used to drill an oil and gas well. It also estimates the health risks of the drilling crew due to their exposure to these substances. Measurements from Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (AAS) revealed that, the concentrations of the metals present in the drilling mud samples varied significantly and decreased in the order of Zn > Al > Ni > Pb > Cr > Cu > As > Hg > Cd. Generally, amongst all the heavy metals considered, mud sample C had the highest heavy metal concentration when compared to samples A and B, respectively. When compared with the recommended maximum allowable limits, Cd and Ni were found to be higher than the International Reference Standard by factors of Cd (3 mg/kg) and Ni (50 mg/kg). The cancer risk obtained from this present study are 1.1 × 10−3 and 7.7 × 10−3 for the drilling crew, which is slightly above the acceptable risk range considered by the environmental and regulatory agencies. The concentrations of radioactive substances as obtained from analysis, show that K-40 is the dominant radionuclide in the samples with the highest value slightly twice the standard reference value. The concentrations of Ra-226 and Th-232 activity in the mud samples were found to be lower when compared with the International Reference Level. Also, the X-ray diffraction analysis helped to identify 16 very important/useful minerals in the three mud samples under consideration. The higher elemental concentrations of potassium and aluminum silicate found in sample C can be credited to the elevated heavy metal-content found in the mud samples. Significantly, these exposure risks found in this present study indicate that the potential health risks due to radiological activities may not pose short – but long-term risks to the drillers. Medicinal plants have great importance to the consumer health, as beside beneficial compounds, plants can accumulate essential and nonessential metals from soil and surrounding environments, leading to consumer health risks. Assuming this, the present study is aimed at evaluating the elemental composition and daily dose standardization based on essential and nonessential trace element presence in of bark, leaves, and roots of Berberis baluchistanica Ahrendt, a common medicinal plant used as a folk medicine in the region. Atomic absorption and flame emission spectroscopy were performed to analyze the presence of essential and nonessential elements manganese (Mn), copper (Cu), lead (Pb), nickel (Ni), iron (Fe), sodium (Na), and potassium (K). Among the essential elements, K was present at high concentrations in the bark (8926.98 ± 0.32 μ g / g), leaves (7922.77 ± 0.42 μ g / g), and roots (6668.5 ± 0.96 μ g / g) of the plant. The estimated concentration of Na was higher in leaves (1782.56 ± 0.13 μ g / g), followed by roots (1089.5 ± 0.71 μ g / g) and bark (572.8 ± 0.62 μ g / g). The Fe concentration varied in the range of 394.7 ± 0.3 μ g / g in bark, 1298.3 ± 0.54 μ g / g in leaves, and 1208.9 ± 0.7 μ g / g in roots. The trace transition element Mn was highest in leaves (42.7 ± 0.99 μ g / g), followed by roots (33.5 ± 0.94 μ g / g) and bark (22 ± 1 μ g / g). The Cu concentration was low, ranging from 20.1 ± 0.63 to 22.67 ± 0.7 μ g / g in leaves, bark, and roots. The obtained concentration of nonessential element Pb was relatively lower than the permissible range (10 mgL–1) established by the World Health Organization. The elemental concentrations in all parts were within the set limits for provisional tolerable daily maximum intake (PTDMI) and provisional tolerable weekly intake (PTWI), and the hazard quotient index (HQ) was below 1 for all toxic metals. The micro and macroelemental distribution and the overall medicinal potential of any medicinal plant can be correlated for dose risk estimation, which will be useful in providing knowledge regarding the contraindication associated with folk medicines. In the present study, based on the elemental composition, it was calculated that the daily safe dose for Berberis baluchistanica is approximately 2-5 g/day of raw powder for an adult, which must not be exceeded to this safe range. Objective. This study was designed to determine the antioxidant activity of the extracts of beetroot by using beetroot energy drink and flavored milk (products). Material & Methods. This experimental trial was conducted at Jinnah University for Women, Pakistan, under the approval of local institutional review board number JUW/DFST/RCB010/2020. All the materials such as beetroot, carrot, cucumber, and lemon were obtained commercially from which two products were formulated: beetroot energy drink (sample1) and flavored milk (sample 2). These formulated products were evaluated for quality analysis (pH and brix), phytochemical screening using the Keller-Kiliani test, Salkowski's test, Alkaline reagent test, lead acetate test, ferric chloride test, protein test, quantitative test of phenol, antioxidant activity, sensory analysis, and shelf life study. The paired t -test was applied to detect significant differences between two samples. Results. The phytochemical analysis revealed that cardiac glycosides, phytosterol, flavonoids, and terpenoids were found in both energy booster drink (EBD) and flavored milk (FM) except phenolic compounds that were found only in EBD. The antioxidant capacity of beetroot juice was far greater than FM. The statistical sensorial analysis of FM and EBD reported a significant mean difference between most of the groups with p < 0.0001. Conclusion. This study concludes that energy drinks having beetroot indicated higher antioxidant capacity than flavored milk. The nutraceutical products (energy booster drink and flavored milk) containing beetroot are enriched with optimum quantities of proteins and fats and low carbohydrates at a stable pH with an adequate total energy content. BACKGROUND: Lead exposures from legacy sources threaten children’s health. Soil in Omaha, Nebraska, was contaminated by emissions from a lead smelter and refinery. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency excavated and replaced contaminated soil at the Omaha Lead Superfund Site between 1999 and 2016. OBJECTIVES: The goal of this study was to assess the association of soil lead level (SLL) and soil remediation status with blood lead levels (BLLs) in children living near or on the site. METHODS: We linked information on SLL at residential properties with children’s BLLs and assigned remediation status to children’s BLL measurements based on whether their measurements occurred during residence at remediated or unremediated properties. We examined the association of SLL and remediation status with elevated BLL (EBLL). We distinguished the roles of temporal trend and the intervention with time-by-interventionstatus interaction contrasts. All analyses estimated odds ratios (ORs) with a generalized estimating equations approach to ensure robustness under the complex correlations among BLL measurements. All analyses controlled for relevant covariates including children’s characteristics. RESULTS: EBLL (>5 lg=dL) was associated with both residential SLL [e.g., OR = 2:00; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.83, 2.19; >400–800 vs. =200 ppm] and neighborhood SLL [e.g., OR = 1:85 (95% CI: 1.62, 2.11; >400–800 vs. =200 ppm)] before remediation but only with neighborhood SLL after remediation. The odds of EBLL were higher before remediation [OR 1.52 (95% CI: 1.34, 1.72)]. Similarly, EBLL was positively associated with preremediation status in our interaction analysis [interaction OR = 1:18 (95%CI: 1.02, 1.37)]. DISCUSSION: Residential and neighborhood SLLs were important predictors of EBLLs in children residing near or on this Superfund site. Neighborhood SLL remained a strong predictor following remediation. Our data analyses showed the benefit of soil remediation. Objective: Lung cancer is among the leading causes of cancer-related deaths. Many exogenous and endogenous factors are associated with the development and progression of this cancer. Among these factors are trace elements, which have many biological functions despite their low concentrations in the body and may disrupt cellular functions and contribute to tumorigenesis when present in excessive or insufficient quantities. In this study, we performed elemental analysis of lung cancer tissues to evaluate the role of trace element concentrations in the formation of metastasis in lung cancer. Materials and Methods: Lung cancer tissue specimens were collected from 65 patients with different cancer stages and histological subtypes for elemental analysis. After the tissues were embedded in paraffin blocks and prepared, the concentrations of 19 elements were analyzed by using inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES). All of the patients included in the study underwent diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up in our center between 2015 and 2020. Results: Comparison of trace element concentrations in three different lung cancer subtypes according to cancer stage showed that lead (Pb) and aluminum (Al) concentrations increased significantly as cancer stage advanced (P < .0001 for both). Trace element concentrations did not differ significantly based on patient sex or age. Conclusion: Lead and aluminum concentrations in the tissues of lung cancer patients may contribute to the formation of metastases, which have a major impact on the prognosis of lung cancer. Generally, the phase structure change of Pb(B' B'')O3–PZT solid solutions near a morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) can be originated from composition variations. Here our results show that the excess PbO and the sintering temperature can also result in the ferroelectric phase structure change in the Pb(Ni1/3Nb2/3)O3–Pb(Zr,Ti)O3 (PNN–PZT)-based ceramics near the MPB. The dielectric, piezoelectric, and ferroelectric properties are dependent on the tetragonal phase content (TP) which is closely associated with the excess PbO and the sintering temperature. The temperature dependence of the polarization (P)–electric field (E) hysteresis loops reveals that the tetragonal phase in the PNN–PZT-based ceramics has a lower activation energy (Ea) for domain wall movement than that of the rhombohedral phase, thus resulting in easier polarization rotation. This is responsible for the phase structure–electrical property relationships in the PNN–PZT-based ceramics, exhibiting the dependence of the tetragonal phase content (TP) on the electrical properties. The transient response of a molecular junction excited by a single laser pulse or by a sequence of pulses is studied theoretically utilizing a density matrix description. The approach focuses on the sequential transmission regime and accounts for intramolecular vibrations and vibrational relaxation. Besides the optical excitation of the molecule, also the laser pulse action on the leads is considered. It is accounted for by collective plasmon excitations which also couple to the molecular transitions. Transient currents are calculated as well as averaged dc resulting from a huge sequence of laser pulses. While the transient currents give some insight into the dynamics of the junctions, the averaged dc is ready to be measured in the experiment. The study focused on levels of selected heavy metals (Pb, Zn, and Cu) in sewage sludge, soil, and in lettuce and cabbage grown on sewage sludge amended soil. Also, the effect of sewage sludge on soil properties (pH, soil organic matter, and soil conductivity) was studied. Three treatments were used based on nitrogen application rates of the sewage sludge: 100, 150, and 200 kg N/ha for lettuce while 160, 210, and 260 kg N/ha for cabbage. A pot experiment was conducted with pots arranged in a completely randomized design and under local climatic conditions. The study revealed that soil organic matter content and conductivity increased significantly with increasing nitrogen application rates. Levels of heavy metals in the soil increased significantly with increasing application rates. The controls for both plants recorded the lowest heavy metal uptake. Cabbage had an uptake of 0.48 ± 0.13, 1.36 ± 0.23, and 2.60 ± 0.29 mg/kg for Pb, Zn, and Cu, respectively, while lettuce had 0.34 ± 0.19, 1.35 ± 0.31, and 2.30 ± 0.14 mg/kg uptake for Pb, Zn, and Cu, respectively. Highest metal uptake was recorded at the highest application rate in both plants (0.66 ± 0.17, 2.66 ± 0.09, and 4.33 ± 0.14 mg/kg for Pb, Zn, and Cu, respectively, for cabbage and 0.54 ± 0.01, 2.24 ± 0.17, and 3.88 ± 0.19 mg/kg of Pb, Zn, and Cu, respectively, for lettuce). The uptake of Zn and Cu was significant, while Pb uptake was insignificant for both plants. Yields increased significantly with increasing application rates. The main purpose of this study was to identify the concentrations of naturally occurring radionuclides (226Ra, 232Th and 40K) and some metals (Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, Pb and Cd) in tooth samples collected from humans living in the Rize province of Turkey. It was found that the activity concentrations ranged from 8.1 to 114.51 Bq kg−1 for 226Ra, from 10.44 to 97.3 Bq kg−1 for 232Th and from 14.53 to 489.27 Bq kg−1 for 40K. The mean activity concentration values of 226Ra and 232Th in tooth samples were higher than the average world values for bones. Furthermore, when the metal concentrations were examined, there was no regular increase or decrease according to age or sex. Background: A bacterial biosensor refers to genetically engineered bacteria that produce an assessable signal in the presence of a physical or chemical agent in the environment.Methods: We have designed and evaluated a bacterial biosensor expressing a luciferase reporter gene controlled by pbr and cadA promoters in Cupriavidus metallidurans (previously termed Ralstonia metallidurans) containing the CH34 and pI258 plasmids of Staphylococcus aureus, respectively, and that can be used for the detection of heavy metals. In the present study, we have produced and evaluated biosensor plasmids designated pGL3-luc/pbr biosensor and pGL3-luc/cad biosensor, that were based on the expression of luc+ and under the control of the cad promoter and the cadC gene of S. aureus plasmid pI258 and pbr promoter and pbrR gene from plasmid pMOL30 of Cupriavidus metallidurans.Results: We found that the pGL3-luc/pbr biosensor may be used to measure lead concentrations between 1-100 μM in the presence of other metals, including zinc, cadmium, tin and nickel. The latter metals did not result in any significant signal. The pGL3-luc/cad biosensor could detect lead concentrations between 10 nM to 10 μM.Conclusions: This biosensor was found to be specific for measuring lead ions in both environmental and biological samples. Objectives. To evaluate how lowering the blood lead level (BLL) intervention threshold affects childhood lead testing policy. Methods. We geocoded 4.19 million Illinois lead testing records (2001–2016) and linked to 2.37 million birth records (2001–2014), data on housing age, industrial emissions, and roads. We used multinomial logistic regression to determine predictors of BLLs of 10 micrograms per deciliter (µg/dL) or greater, 5 to 9 µg/dL, and 4 µg/dL. Results. We found that 2.2% of children had BLLs of 10 µg/dL or greater, 8.9% had BLLs of 5 to 9 µg/dL, and 5.7% had BLLs of 4 µg/dL. Pre-1930 housing was associated with more than 2- to 4-fold increased relative risk of BLLs above all thresholds. Housing built in 1951 to 1978 was associated with increased relative risk of BLLs of 5 to 9 µg/dL (relative risk ratio [RRR] = 1.14; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.06, 1.21) but not with increased relative risk of BLLs of 10 µg/dL or greater (RRR = 0.99; 95% CI = 0.84, 1.16). At a given address, previous BLLs of 5 to 9 µg/dL or BLLs of 10 µg/dL or greater were associated with increased risk of BLLs of 5 to 9 µg/dL or BLLs of 10 µg/dL or greater among current occupants by 2.37- (95% CI = 2.20, 2.54) fold and 4.08- (95% CI = 3.69, 4.52) fold, respectively. Conclusions. The relative importance of determinants of above-threshold BLLs changes with decreasing intervention thresholds. Public Health Implications. The present work studied the pH, organic carbon, phosphorus (P), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), and heavy metals Cu, Cr, Co and Pb in roadside agricultural soils of Jalandhar environs of Punjab, India. A total of 120 samples in triplicates were collected from different sites for assessment of heavy metal pollution. The mean values of Cu, Cr, Co and Pb were found below the permissible limits of Indian and Swedish soil limits. Principal component analysis (PCA) showed that heavy metals have different sources of origin. The results of contamination factor (CF), geoaccumulation index (Igeo), degree of contamination (Cd) and potential ecological risk index (RI) showed low contamination and ecological risks of heavy metals in roadside agricultural soils, respectively. The determination of Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Na, Zn, and Pb by inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry (ICP OES) was performed on dry matter and decoctions of the medicinal plants Cordia salicifolia, Chiococca alba (L.) Hitchc., and Echites peltata used as an appetite suppressant and diuretic in Brazil. The accuracy of the measurements was analyzed by the spike recovery test. Results showed that the concentration of these seven metals (Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Na, and Zn) in dry plant samples is below the oral concentration of elemental impurities established by the United States Pharmacopoeia Convention (USP). However, there are no concentration limits for Fe, Na, and Zn established by the USP in drug substances and excipients. Levels higher than the recommended value by the USP were observed for Pb and the lowest for Cd, Co, Cr, and Cu, both in dried plant samples and their decoctions. In the decoctions prepared from these plants were found elements such as Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Na, Zn, and Pb. In the decoction prepared from 40 g C. salicifolia leaves and 40 g C. alba wood, the content of Cd is above the oral daily exposure value set by the USP. Hazard index (HI) for decoctions prepared from these plants exceeded the threshold (1). Given the uncertainties associated with the estimates of toxicity values and exposure factors, futures researches should address the possible toxicity in humans. Uncontrolled selling and long-term ingestion of medicinal plants can cause toxicity and interfere with the effect of drugs. Streptococcus pneumoniae is an opportunistic human pathogen that utilizes the competence regulon, a quorum-sensing circuitry, to acquire antibiotic resistance genes and initiate its attack on the human host. Interception of the competence regulon can therefore be utilized to study S. pneumoniae cell-cell communication and behavioral changes, as well as attenuate S. pneumoniae infectivity. Herein we report the design and synthesis of cyclic dominant negative competence-stimulating peptide (dnCSP) analogs capable of intercepting the competence regulon in both S. pneumoniae specificity groups with activities at the low nanomolar range. Structural analysis of lead analogs provided important insights as to the molecular mechanism that drives CSP receptor binding and revealed that the pan-group cyclic CSPs exhibit a chimeric hydrophobic patch conformation that resembles the hydrophobic patches required for both ComD1 and ComD2 binding. Moreover, the lead cyclic dnCSP, CSP1-E1A-cyc(Dap6E10), was found to possess superior pharmacological properties, including improved resistance to enzymatic degradation, while remaining nontoxic. Lastly, CSP1-E1A-cyc(Dap6E10) was capable of attenuating mouse mortality during acute pneumonia caused by both group 1 and group 2 S. pneumoniae strains. This cyclic pan-group dnCSP is therefore a promising drug lead scaffold against S. pneumoniae infections that could be administered individually or utilized in combination therapy to augment the effects of current antimicrobial agents. This essay examines the production of Global English through literary texts by examining three adaptations of Edgar Allan Poe's short story "The Gold Bug" in the 1930s by competing figures in the vocabulary control movement—Harold Palmer, Michael West, and C. K. Ogden—leaders in the formation of the field of applied linguistics. The first part of the essay explains the colonial origins of the vocabulary word list and its ascendant value in the interwar period for the new discipline of applied linguistics, and as part of the competition for English language textbooks. This leads to an analysis of these three simplifications of Poe's story that demonstrates how the language politics in Poe's story provides a structure through which to express a nascent Global English ideology regarding race, vernacular, and auxiliary languages. The volatile fraction of natural products often consists of complex mixtures of isomeric and/or homologous components with similar structural and physical characteristics (e.g. mono- and sesquiterpenoids) that are not easy to separate simultaneously with conventional GC stationary phases, even when used with multidimensional systems. The introduction of ionic liquids (ILs) as stationary phases has opened up new perspectives in this field as their unique solvation properties result in uncommon selectivity, which is completely different to that of classic polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)- and polyethyleneglycol (PEG)-based columns. Because of their peculiar selectivity and high inertness, IL-based columns have already found several applications in the natural product field in mono- and multidimensional GC and preparative GC, leading to the exhaustive analysis of complex samples (including aqueous solutions), and the separation of challenging pair(s) of compounds. This article provides an overview of how IL-based columns can be exploited in the fields of food and natural products, explores the wide range of applications that have already been developed and highlights the main features of these promising stationary phases, which are expected to be further extended in the near future, in particular, for routine use. Interspecific competition (IC) is often seen as a main driver of evolutionary patterns and community structure. Bats might compete for key resources, and cases of exaggerated divergence of resource‐related characters or trait overdispersion in bat assemblages are often explained in terms of current or past interspecific competition. However, other pressures leading to patterns that mimic the outcome of competition cannot always be ruled out.We present the state of knowledge on IC among bats, providing a critical evaluation of the information available and identifying open questions and challenges.We reviewed 100 documents addressing potential or actual IC in bats and categorised them in terms of the resource for which bats compete (food, foraging habitat, roosts, water, and acoustic space). We also examined the ecomorphological and behavioural traits considered therein to highlight responses to IC or niche partitioning.We found that: although resources should be limiting in order for competition to occur, this is seldom tested; sympatry is sometimes taken as synonymous of syntopy (yet sympatric species that are not syntopic will never experience competition); comparisons between sympatry and allopatry are rare; and testing of objective criteria exploring the existence of niche partitioning or character displacement is not commonly adopted.While morphological examination of food remains in droppings has often led to coarse‐grained analysis that proved insufficient to establish the occurrence of food niche overlap or partitioning, new frontiers are being opened by state‐of‐the‐art molecular dietary analysis.A better understanding of IC in bats is paramount, since distributional changes leading to novel bat assemblages driven by climate change are already taking place, and the dramatic decline in insect availability, as well as the global loss or alteration of foraging habitat, may generate new competitive interactions or exacerbate existing interactions in the Anthropocene, and into the future. In general, although some random variables such as wind speed, temperature, and load are known to have multimodal distributions, input or output random variables are considered to follow unimodal distributions without assessing the unimodality or multimodality of distributions from samples. In uncertainty analysis, estimating unimodal distribution as multimodal distribution or vice versa can lead to erroneous analysis results. Thus, whether a distribution is unimodal or multimodal must be assessed before the estimation of distributions. In this paper, the bimodality coefficient (BC) and Hartigan's dip statistic (HDS), which are representative methods for assessing multimodality, are introduced and compared. Then, a combined HDS with BC method is proposed. The proposed method has the advantages of both BC and HDS by using the skewness and kurtosis of samples as well as the dip statistic through a link function between the BC values in BC and significance level in HDS. To verify the performance of the proposed method, statistical simulation tests were conducted to evaluate the multimodality for various unimodal, bimodal, and trimodal models. The implementation of the proposed method to real engineering data is shown through case studies. Platinum nanoflowers modified glassy carbon electrodes (PtNFs/GCE) was fabricated simply for lead determination in water samples. The modified electrodes were prepared by electrodeposition in hexachloroplatinic acid solution at constant potential. The influence of deposition time and potential on surface morphology, chemical composition, electrochemical properties of electrode were investigated. At −0.2 V of potential and 150 s of deposition duration, platinum developed as nanoflower shape and scattered densely all over the glassy carbon surface, producing the largest electrochemically active surface areas. The highest differential pulse stripping voltammetry (DPSV) signal of lead was obtained by using the prepared electrode. Under optimized experimental condition of electrolyte, accumulation potential and time, the peak current was found to be linear proportion to lead concentration in range of 1 to 100 μg L−1 (slope=0.371) with a limit of detection of 0.398 μg L−1. The method has good repeatability and reproducibility with relative standard deviations of 1.47 % and 4.83 %, respectively. The modified PtNFs/GCE also demonstrated an excellent long‐term stability with only 9 % decrease in Pb peak current over 30 days. Moreover, the performance of the modified PtNFs/GCE in determination of Pb(II) in two industrial wastewaters was good agreement with data obtained by a graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (GFAAS) method. This paper examines the pursuit of legitimacy by the self-proclaimed "republics" in Ukraine. While these "republics" are illegal, questions of their legitimacy are commonly discussed almost entirely through Weberian rule-conformity. We argue that this one-dimensional view of legitimacy overlooks the rich context of normative aspects of power relationships. If the occupied Donbas is to be reintegrated into Ukraine, it is essential to understand the perceived legitimation of the political institutions in this region. We use David Beetham's framework of legitimacy—consisting of legality, morality, and consent—to analyze the "republics'" pursuit of legitimacy. Our analysis leads to the proposition that while the "republics" are illegal, their supporters' normative perceptions of the right to govern have ascribed more validity to the fake "governments" than what would have been expected from a legal point of view. Additionally, while a ceasefire between the Russian proxies and Ukraine's forces has reduced violence, it has also levied temporal effect on the legitimation of illegitimate institutions. Our treatment of the process of legitimation over time helps us identify potential strategies of delegitimization should DPR and LPR reincorporate with Ukraine-controlled territory. Without dismantling internal perceptions of institutional legitimacy among inhabitants of nongovernment-controlled areas, a re-integration could not be accomplished. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Signatures of the population of the Giant Pairing Vibration (GPV), a correlated two-nucleon excitation across major shell expected to be populated in two-nucleon transfer reactions, have been observed for the first time in carbon isotopes. In the present paper, a review of the experimental methods and of the analysis leading to that observation is reported. Intermediate oxides are synthesized by heating fresh lead dioxide obtained from commercial positive plates of lead-acid batteries. These oxides are soaked in sulfuric acid with 1.28 s g under stirring for 1 h. The obtained powders are analyzed using X-ray diffraction and chemical analysis. The samples are discharged with a cathodic current of 1 mA in sulfuric acid with 1.28 s g, and the capacity is determined. It is found that lead dioxide obtained from PbO1.55 is more active than the fresh sample. It shows an increase in capacity of 17%. Based on the premise that textiles can contain information about situations of intercultural contact, including their degree of intensity, a group of textiles recovered from the Doncellas site in Northwest Argentina—some housed in the Ethnographic Museum Juan B. Ambrosetti (Buenos Aires, Argentina) and others in the Archeological Museum Dr. E. Casanova (Tilcara, Argentina)—were examined and related information was updated to bring to light the relational dynamics between the Salar of Atacama and neighboring territories that may have impacted both the Salar and the Loa River basin. In this paper we focus on one of those territories, Northwest Argentina, with the assumption that links established between that region and the Atacama would have intensified in the period ca. A.D. 1350–1500. This analysis led to our proposal that a process of expansion occurred in the Atacama at the time that was linked to the interests of the Inka Empire. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Toxic metals in medicinal herbs are potentially harmful for people taking herbal medicines. In this work, laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy–laser-induced fluorescence (LIBS-LIF) spectroscopy was first applied to carry out rapid and sensitive trace lead analysis in medicinal herb samples. To overcome the problem of diversity on the sample size, shape, and density for different samples, original samples were pulverized to powder and then pressed into pellets for spectral analysis. A series of standard samples were self-made for building a calibration curve. As an exemplary study, lead in Rheum officinale was analyzed with LIBS-LIF spectroscopy with significantly improved analytical sensitivity. The R2 of the build linear calibration curve was 0.996 and the detection limit of lead in R. officinale was determined to be 0.13 ppm. The enhancement factor on the signal-to-background ratio was >100 under low lead concentrations if compared with LIBS analysis. The lead concentrations in several original R. officinale samples were quantitatively determined. This work demonstrated that LIBS-LIF can be successfully applied to carry out rapid, sensitive, and quantitative trace lead analysis for medicinal herbs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of the study was to describe the experience of outdoor mobility among immigrants with late effects of polio living in Sweden. There is a need to understand more about this young group of persons since they often have problems with mobility and gait, but they may also face participation restrictions due to issues associated with integration into a new community and culture. A total of 14 young immigrants with late effects of polio participated and were interviewed individually. The study used a qualitative method to explore personal experiences and the interviews were analyzed through an inductive approach, using qualitative content analysis. The analysis led to a major theme; self-image and acceptance, that comprised a changeable process and experiences of cultural, social, and gender-specific barriers, but also of environmental and personal factors that impacted their outdoor mobility. By using a car, the participants felt they could come across as normal which also increased their self-esteem. Independent mobility is a major enabler for ongoing employment and being able to use a car increases the chances for integration into society for young immigrants with late effects of polio. Public transport is not considered to be adequate or efficient enough due to the participants' mobility impairments, but driving can prevent involuntary isolation and facilitate participation. Recently, we suggested two alternative analytical models of proton structure function F 2 P (x , t) and gluon distribution G (x , t) at small x [L. Machahari and D. K. Choudhury, Eur. Phys. J. A54, 69 (2018); Commun. Theor. Phys.71, 56 (2019)] derived from the coupled DGLAP equations for quarks and gluons approximated by Taylor expansion. In this work, we compute the partial momentum fractions carried by quarks and gluons in limited small x range: x a ≤ x ≤ x b and compare them with few other models available in the current literature. The analysis leads to understand qualitatively the effects of notions like Froissart saturation and self-similarity in the proton at small x. In many countries, soil contamination and lead exposure is a persistent human and environmental health issue, while in others, it is an emerging concern. Defining the extent of lead contamination and assessing human health risk allow for efficient prevention agendas. The different types of land uses delimit the exposure frequency and hence can influence the evaluation of possible threats. In this study, human health risk assessment is performed under different land use scenarios, after determining the concentration of lead in topsoil of a rehabilitated space. An analytical hybrid method was used to determine the concentrations of the heavy metal. Human health risk indicators, hazard quotient and cancer risk, were subsequently calculated and compared under such scenarios of varying population exposure by land use. Results indicate that an increasing exposure can set health risk indicators above the tolerable levels. Correctly defining the exposure frequency by land use is very important to determine the actual risk levels of a site. Local regulators should take this information into account before designing prevention plans, especially in localities where migration and urbanization are major development factors and since the land use of a public place could change over time and alter the exposure frequency to soil. Next generation sequencing methods are widely adopted for a large amount of scientific purposes, from pure research to health-related studies. The decreasing costs per analysis led to big amounts of generated data and to the subsequent improvement of software for the respective analyses. As a consequence, many approaches have been developed to chain different software in order to obtain reliable and reproducible workflows. However, the large range of applications for NGS approaches entails the challenge to manage many different workflows without losing reliability. We here present a high-throughput sequencing pipeline (HaTSPiL), a Python-powered CLI tool designed to handle different approaches for data analysis with a high level of reliability. The software relies on the barcoding of filenames using a human readable naming convention that contains any information regarding the sample needed by the software to automatically choose different workflows and parameters. HaTSPiL is highly modular and customisable, allowing the users to extend its features for any specific need. • We have discussed the mechanisms influencing the depth resolution in 'on-axis' TKD. • Signals contributing to detectable Kikuchi bands in TKD originate from a volume of finite thickness (∼λ TDS) next to the bottom foil surface. • This existing surface sensitivity of TKD analysis can lead to the observation of different grain structures when opposite sides of a nano-crystalline foil are facing the incident electron beam. • A guideline for suitable sample thickness is suggested in order to achieve clear and indexable Kikuchi patterns for TKD analysis. In this paper, we have analyzed the depth resolution that can be achieved by on-axis transmission Kikuchi diffraction (TKD) using a Zr–Nb alloy. The results indicate that the signals contributing to detectable Kikuchi bands originate from a depth of approximately the mean free path of thermal diffuse scattering (λ TDS) from the bottom surface of a thin foil sample. This existing surface sensitivity can thus lead to the observation of different grain structures when opposite sides of a nano-crystalline foil are facing the incident electron beam. These results also provide a guideline for the ideal sample thickness for TKD analysis of ≤ 6λ TDS , or 21 times the elastic scattering mean free path (λ MFP) for samples of high crystal symmetry. The voltammetry of microparticles (VIMP) methodology was applied to a set of submicrosamples from the corrosion layers of copper artifacts from the archaeological site of La Vital (Gandia, Spain), dated back to 4200 to 3900 BP, attached to graphite electrodes in contact with aqueous acetate buffer at pH 4.50. Signals for the reduction of cuprite plus malachite, dominating the composition of the corrosion layers, and tenorite, were used for grouping the samples. A model to describe their relative concentrations assuming gradients following a potential law is proposed and tested with experimental data. Correlation of VIMP sample grouping with lead isotope data in literature permitted to discriminate archaeological samples depending on the provenance of raw materials and the manufacturing process.
