Scholars raise 2 salient questions regarding poetry in post-apartheid South Africa. One is whether new poetry emerged in the post-apartheid South Africa, and the other is whether poetry produced during and after the Truth and Reconciliation Commission is capable of capturing the imagination of the reading public without resorting to the bigotry of Black versus White. Literature highlights the need for South African poets to move away from using historical facts as the basis for making literary representation. We acknowledge that the use of historical facts as the basis for literary representation of societies may be seen as insensitive to the victims of the injustices of the past practices in highly politically polarised communities. At the same time, we argue that historical narratives with positive ideological intent can heal wounds and unite a nation. To justify this position, we adopted a 2-fold perspective: firstly, we investigated the effects of using history as the basis for literary representation and, secondly, we examined the extent to which post-apartheid South African poets may use history as a necessary tool to enforce unity and a sense of forgiveness. In Afghanistan and especially in Nangarhar, the establishment of cultural societies, cultural meetings and activities have been a tradition since long ago. Around the year 2001, youth associations and institutions were established in various districts and cities of Nangarhar, where scientific meetings, debates and seminars are held on various cultural and social topics. Thanks to these meetings, many young people turned to writing and wrote dozens of works for the enrichment of Pashto literature, and then they are printed by publishing societies in Nangarhar, and then they have reached the hands of lovers of literature. Due to the establishment of these meetings and cultural societies, each society had its own newspapers and magazines, in which academic articles were published along with the reports of its cultural meetings. The conditions that paved the way for the population exchange, the unrest created by rising nationalism in Turkey and Greece, and the subsequent search for a homogeneous population on both sides of the Aegean had a direct impact on Istanbul's intellectual environment, its artistic and literary production, and its architecture, in which Greeks had played a significant role. This article examines the main physical and intellectual properties of the Greek Literary Society in Constantinople, its headquarters in Pera, its library and archive, and their afterlives following their confiscation by Turkish officials. By focusing on the effects of the departure of renowned scholars from Istanbul, particularly those who had conducted archeological research, it discusses the extent of the knowledge and property accumulated within the Greek Literary Society's circles and evaluates their loss, transportation, and transformation as "cultural (material and human) and social capital" and "brain drain." While a clear distinction was drawn between "classical learning" and "modern science" at Oxford and Cambridge Universities in the early nineteenth century, we see no such contrast being made in other spaces of knowledge making, such as the Manchester Literary and Philosophical Society. Drawing on Bacon's insistence that his inductive method should apply across all fields of knowledge, early members of the Society interpreted "science" as referring to any systematic inquiry utilising an empirical approach. An investigation of the ways in which classical authors were used within the researches of early members of the Society raises important questions about how we should think about empirical method and scientific research in early nineteenth–century England. Frequently understood as primarily engaged in researching natural knowledge, the members of the Manchester Society concerned themselves with a wide range of subjects across all branches of knowledge. Crucially, classical authors were drawn upon as sources of empirical evidence across all types of inquiry, from investigations into the colours of opaque bodies to the origins of party feeling. The article presents the views of two African American women literacy educators who engage in literacy teaching and learning with fourth-grade African American boys to cultivate their intellectual curiosities and joy. It mentions that inquiry-driven and interdisciplinary exposure helps African American boys to find their place in the world and experiment with creative solutions. The mid-twentieth-century English novelist, Henry Williamson, wrote nature stories but also romantic and historical fiction, including a fifteen-volume saga that contains a largely favorable characterization of Oswald Mosley, the leader of the British Union of Fascists. This essay considers the challenge of such a fascist character through the prism of the literary imagination of Williamson readers, and more specifically through my longstanding ethnographic work with an English literary society constituted in the author's name. I am centrally concerned with how literary society members deal with the positive depiction of the Mosley-based character through the stages of the reading process that they identify and describe. Do the immersive values commonly attached to their solitary reading culture, for instance, assist or further problematize that engagement? What role does their subsequent, shared practice of character evaluation play? As well as considering the treatment of characters as objects of sympathy, I explore the vital sympathies that for literary society members tie characters together with historical persons. Across the essay I dialogue with anthropological literature on exemplars, historical commentaries on the fascist cult of leadership, and finally with the philosophical claims that Nussbaum makes for the moral and political consequences of fiction reading. After sixty years of existence, the recognition achieved by the Oulipo is undeniable. If major writers have emerged from its ranks, the group's role, its "visibility" and its reception in the literary field remain problematic. Recently portrayed by certain exegetes as a spent or "exhausted" organization, has the Oulipo had its day? This article examines the sometimes contradictory criticisms recently addressed to the group, particularly accusations of formalism and excessive popularization. This study describes the Transylvanian literary ecosystem by analysing the relationships between the actors present in literary life. The authors seek the answer to the question whether the oeuvre and perception of writers and poets were defined by their relationships, or rather, whether their relationships were formed by their grouping along common ideas and attitudes. The research investigated the following: how writers and poets related to each other, in which journals they published together, and to which literary societies they belonged. As a data source, the authors used the 5 volumes of the Hungarian literary lexicon in Romania. This study analyses the compiled network using network theory procedures. By calculating the degree of closeness centrality and betweenness centrality, the research concludes whether there are dominant actors, journals, societies in the Transylvanian literary life that were progressive constituents of the development of intellectual life. This research is interdisciplinary and groundbreaking, because it approaches the sociological topic from the perspective of network analysis. This paper deals with the traces of Persian literature on Naim Frasheri’s poetry. It also explores literary and extra literary factors that were of crucial significance during the process of his intellectual formation and ontological manifestation. The paper argues that author’s ideas are the result of the interactions of different cultures, in our case Persian and Albanian cultures. We try to comprehend the social environment and presumptive reasons and sources of author’s motivation and inspiration for his poetic creation. The extra literary factors which have been connecting the poet to Persian language and literature and some epistemes traced in Naim’s poetry were found to be related to epistemic circulation of cultural and literary societies during the Ottoman Empire in the Balkan Region. In this context, special attention has been given to the influences, concepts, archetypes and topics of Persian literature in Naim’s poetry in order to identify the most significant Persian traces in the epistemology and ontology of the Albanian people and their culture. Nevertheless, their influence has not been perceived when it comes to his depiction of love in the couple. Yet this influence on the birth and superposition of the writer’s paratopia’s explain the originality of these representations in Kyra Kyralina and Oncle Anghel. This article aims to consider two origins to these paratopia’s, to grasp their effects on the view of the works of fiction on the couple’s love and to take the measure of its originality, once contextualized in the interwar period’s society and literary production. Utah's libraries were perceived as instruments for "the establishment of a recognized social order" by each successive group that came to power and were often founded as the result of conflict between Mormon culture and the larger American society. On their arrival, Mormons established libraries primarily to provide access to information necessary to the practical aspects of establishing their new utopian "Kingdom of God." As conflict with the mainstream culture grew religious, political, economic, and social groups in American society looked to libraries to eradicate polygamy; undermine the Mormon religion, culture, and political power; and establish the recognized American social order as the dominant culture in Utah. The period of conflict was followed by reconciliation, unification, and assimilation as the Mormon Church and society abandoned its utopian ideology and sought acceptance into the greater culture of the United States. Utah's women, previously sharply divided, organized into women's clubs and literary societies to found these institutions. Anne Lister's membership in the Halifax Literary and Philosophical Society is considered here as an early example of a woman admitted to such a society. Lister's membership in this Society, and the Society's decision to admit her, illuminates much about women's participation in civic and intellectual life in this period, and more particularly about Lister's particular status in her hometown of Halifax. This essay investigates the extent to which Lister's membership in the Society constituted true participation and how it intersected with, and compared to, other formal and informal kinds of intellectual and associational activities available to women in the period. It also explores the ways in which such institutions themselves imagined their role in society extending beyond their membership through largely patriarchal models of diffusion. Drawing on the example of two friendships of Elizabeth Montagu, this essay argues that "virtue friendship" was the standard against which eighteenth-century men and women, especially the Bluestockings, measured their personal relationships. Deborah Heller argues that this virtue-based, rational ideal of friendship ultimately derived from Aristotle and his treatises on ethics. Feeling and affect are indeed essential components of this virtue-based model of friendship, but they need to be directed toward what is truly lovable, the friend's moral goodness. Although we see tokens of "love" language in Montagu's correspondence, they represent claims of sincerity and truthfulness toward the other person that must be redeemed over time. The only way of redeeming these claims is through continuous communication and mutuality. Heller argues, finally, that the intersubjective structure of virtue friendship had important social consequences as well—through its very pragmatics of subjective truthfulness and sincerity. The article discusses the highlights of the Milton Society of America (MSA) Platinum Jubilee at the 2018 Modern Language Association (MLA) Convention, held in New York City in January 2018. The event included special sessions on poet John Milton, the establishment of the Grolier Club, and awards presentations for distinguished works published in 2016. The the Milton Society also launched a funding campaign to be used to support junior Miltonists.

The relevance and role of public library in fostering national integration for development has received wide study but little or no similar review have been conducted or carried out in PHLS library hence, this study seeks to investigate the various areas it has contributed in integrating various groups within its host community and the public for development using four research objectives. Descriptive survey research was adopted for the study with a population of 62 comprising of 10 staff and 52 current registered users. Questionnaires were administered and the data generated were analysed using descriptive statistics of frequency counts and percentages. The results revealed that various information resources were available for use except the absence of functional e-library; various services were also carried out. The major challenges identified were inadequate fund, manpower, power supply, lack of e-library, among others. It was recommended among others that the management of PHLS library should endeavour to equip the e-library in order to meet up with the provision of access to digital information as to enhance its services delivery in this era of ICT. Under the title "'In states unborn and accents yet unknown': Shakespeare and the ISEA", this essay first appeared as a chapter in ISEA, 1964-2014: A South African Research Institute Serving People, edited by Monica Hendricks (Grahamstown: NISC, 2016). The Institute for the Study of English in Africa (ISEA) was founded by Guy Butler at Rhodes University, Grahamstown, in 1964. Among its many undertakings were several development projects for the Shakespeare Society of Southern Africa, established in 1986. The article describes the context in which the Society was formed and provides an overview of key activities undertaken in collaboration with the Institute during the course of its first three decades. The piece also reflects more generally on the social, cultural, educational and political history of Shakespeare in South Africa, asking: "Will Shakespeare continue to thrive in South Africa?" The Literary (later Academic) Society was founded in Bucharest, in 1866, at the initiative of C. A. Rosetti, the then minister for religious denominations and public education. Its mission was to set the orthographical and grammatical rules and compile a dictionary of the Romanian language. The 21 founding members came from all provinces inhabited by Romanians, in Romania proper and in the neighboring countries, and were grouped into three sections: literature and lexicography, history' and archaeology, and natural sciences.
