This investigation holds significant merit due to its execution within a region characterized by depauperate avifaunal assemblages in the Western Desert of Egypt. Notably, the study highlights the presence of wild bird populations within petroleum industry worker camps situated in the Marsa Matrouh Governorate. The results show that the bird community recorded in the study area was rich in bird species and numerous (8425 individuals), these birds belonged to 16 species, grouped in 16 families and 6 orders. The dominant bird species were western yellow wagtail, house sparrow, rock pigeon, hooded crow, red-backed shrike and Eurasian collared dove. The highest number of bird species was recorded during autumn and then winter season according to the existence of migratory bird species, while the lowest was recorded during spring due to the return of migratory species and bird dispersal for nesting. The bird's members for the order Passeriformes were the most existence than other different orders according to its global distribution, followed by the order Columbiformes in the second rank, then Pterocliformes, Ciconiiformes, Bucerotiformes and finally Falconiformes. Autumn season led the other seasons with its highest value for bird richness and Shannon-Wiener diversity index, followed by winter for species richness and spring for Shannon-Wiener diversity index. Introduction: Workplace accidents in the petroleum industry can cause catastrophic damage to people, property, and the environment. Earlier studies in this domain indicate that the majority of the accident report information is available in unstructured text format. Conventional techniques for the analysis of accident data are time-consuming and heavily dependent on experts' subject knowledge, experience, and judgment. There is a need to develop a machine learning-based decision support system to analyze the vast amounts of unstructured text data that are frequently overlooked due to a lack of appropriate methodology. Method: To address this gap in the literature, we propose a hybrid methodology that uses improved text-mining techniques combined with an un-bias group decision-making framework to combine the output of objective weights (based on text mining) and subjective weights (based on expert opinion) of risk factors to prioritize them. Based on the contextual word embedding models and term frequencies, we extracted five important clusters of risk factors comprising more than 32 risk sub-factors. A heterogeneous group of experts and employees in the petroleum industry were contacted to obtain their opinions on the extracted risk factors, and the best-worst method was used to convert their opinions to weights. Conclusions and Practical Applications: The applicability of our proposed framework was tested on the data compiled from the accident data released by the petroleum industries in India. While the disproportionate power of corporate and state fossil fuel interests to influence energy and climate policy is now well known, questions remain about the groups that enthusiastically consume such narratives, with far-reaching political consequences. Fossil fuel workers are one such group. Their positions within these debates are highly relevant to policy outcomes, yet their political positions are often assumed to oppose decarbonizing the economy to the detriment of otherwise well-intended interventions. We offer a more nuanced understanding of the sentiments of fossil fuel workers invoked through their public and political engagements. We use the Twitter profiles of 160 self-identified oil and gas workers to explore the nature of oil workers' masculinity and its implication in climate obstruction and far-right politics. Introduction: Oil and gas workers are exposed to various hazards in the workplace, which increases their risk factors and risk of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE). There have been limited studies on the risk of MACE in workers within the oil and gas industry. Methods: We utilized a cross-sectional approach to analyze data spanning a decade for offshore and onshore workers of an oil and gas corporation in Qatar. By utilizing the Framingham Risk Score (FRS), we evaluated the risk of MACE within both groups. Data was retrieved from the corporation's electronic medical record. The corporation had 736 offshore workers and 1,041 onshore workers. A sample calculation determined that 48 data samples were required for the offshore workers, which were then rounded up to 50. Similarly, 50 data samples were obtained from the onshore workers for comparison. The samples were selected using a computer-generated random sampling method. Two sets of data, namely the first profile (2009) and the second profile (2019), were collected in each sample. The available data were used to compute the risk of MACE. Results: Over a ten-year period, both offshore and onshore workers experienced increased risks of MACE. For offshore workers, the risk escalated from 9.2(8.0)% to 20.4(15.2)%, whereas for onshore workers, the risk increased from 10.0(7.6)% to 17.0(11.0)%. The risk of MACE was found to be significantly greater among offshore workers compared to onshore workers (p=0.011). Little is known about Libyan trade unionism and its role in the Arab workers' movement. Drawing on a variety of archival sources, this article contributes a general overview of trade unionism in Tripolitania and Cyrenaica from the time of the British Administration (1943–1951) until 1957. In this period, the Libyan General Workers Union (LGWU) emerged as the main workers' organisation and the first trade unions laws were promulgated. Since 1957, with the establishment of the Petroleum Workers Union and the presence of foreigners working in oil companies, the LGWU's supremacy as a representative of Libya's workers waned, and Libyan unionism entered a new phase. This article chronicles the unknown history of Libyan trade unionism and highlights the significance of trade union internationalism, specifically, the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions in Libyan labour affairs. Many offshore oil and gas workers experience fatigue due to shift work schedules, excessive working hours, lack of sleep, heavy workloads, and harsh environmental factors. Fatigue has the potential to impact an individual's performance, alertness, and overall health and safety. The objective of this research is to identify risk factors for fatigue in offshore oil and gas workers so that preventive measures can be taken. This research is a systematic review using PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis) to identify, select, and synthesize studies. Search via the central database, namely ScienceDirect. The publication period used is 2017-2024 with the keywords "Occupational Fatigue" AND "Offshore" AND "Oil and Gas". The salivary a-amylase (sAA) concentration has a potential role as a biological indicator of occupational fatigue. This study aimed to determine the levels of sAA and its influencing factors. This research used a cross-sectional design with a sample of 40 office staff respondents at PT. X (Persero). Mental workload (MWL), sleep quality, and occupational fatigue were measured using the NASA-Total Load Index (TLX), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, and Industrial Fatigue Research Committee, respectively. Meanwhile, the basic sAA levels was measured through the sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay method using the Bioenzy® Kit Assay. Descriptive analysis showed that the workers were mostly men, 75% of which had a high education level and 72.5% were of marital status. MWL scoring in NASA-TLX revealed an average score of 70.91, which indicates a high MWL. Pearson's correlation analysis unveiled that occupational fatigue and sleep quality were significantly correlated with sAA concentration. The final model showed that for each one-unit increase in occupational fatigue, the sAA concentration increased by 15.90 U/mL. Furthermore, for every unit increase in sleep quality, the sAA concentration decreased by 13.38 U/mL. sAA concentration can be used as a potential noninvasive biological marker related to sleep quality and occupational fatigue. Objective To analyze the influencing factors of sleep disorders and the relationship between working hours per week and sleep disorders among employees in oil field enterprises in Gansu Province. Methods The employees of oil field enterprises in Gansu Province were investigated from January to June 2022. The basic information and sleep quality data of 2 178 subjects were collected by self-made questionnaire combined with Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index scale. The normal sleep group and sleep disorder group were matched according to 1:1 by propensity score matching (PSM). Univariate analysis and multivariate logistic regression analysis were performed to analyze the influencing factors of sleep disorder. Restricted cubic spline (RCS) model was used to analyze the dose-response relationship between working hours per week and sleep disorder. Results The detection rate of sleep disorders among oil field workers in Gansu Province was 45.68%. In total 957 pairs of propensity scores were matched successfully, and the baseline data of the two groups were basically balanced after matching. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that hypertension (OR=1.507, 95%CI: 1.124-2.022), diabetes mellitus (OR=1.743, 95%CI: 1.020-2.980), length of service of 10 to 19 years (OR=1.325, 95%CI: 1.021-1.719), length of service of 20 to 29 years (OR=1.437, 95%CI: 1.071-1.927), length of service ≥ 30 years (OR=1.581, 95%CI: 1.095-2.282), weekly working hours of 49 to 55 hours (OR=1.381, 95%CI:1.026-1.859), working hours ≥ 56 hours per week (OR=1.999, 95%CI: 1.551-2.575), and work injury (OR=1.479, 95%CI: 1.114-1.962) were the risk factors of sleep disorder, while physical exercise (OR=0.694, 95%CI: 0.573-0.839) was the protective factor. The results of restricted cubic spline model showed that there was a non-linear dose-response relationship between the working hours per week and sleep disorders. When the working hour per week exceeded 40 hours, the risk of sleep disorders increased. Conclusion The sleep problem of oil field workers should be paid attention to. Enterprises should urge workers to develop healthy living habits, improve working environment, arrange working hours reasonably, and improve sleep quality, to reduce the risk of sleep disorders. In colonial French Congo, one of the main challenges for labor relations was the need to reconcile contradictory efforts to promote the mobility of native workers while also stabilizing (or immobilizing) the workforce. As the interests of colonial employers and officials overlapped and merged, so did the status of indigenous workers evolve according to how administrative and economic leaders categorized indigenous work. Indigenous workers were therefore progressively categorized as migrant workers, deserters or vagrants. The political instruments which were supposed to ensure the circulation of migrant workers particularly (the laissez-passer, worker logbooks, orders regulating the flow of the workforce within the colony, etc.) were perversely used to constrain worker movement. Drawing on the archives of the French colonial administration and the private archives of the Compagnie Française du Haut-Congo, this article tries to grasp the relation between freedom and (im)mobility in the context of a colonial concession. In that context, colonial leaders sought to control of mobility for purposes relating to the construction of a local labor market, the consolidation of governmental rationality and the stabilization of colonial order. Wax deposition in oil wells reduces oil production efficiency, increases maintenance costs, and raises the occurrence rate of accidents. Traditional methods have difficulty accurately predicting wax deposition in oil wells, and oil fields typically adopt a passive response mode, resulting in decreased efficiency. Hence, this study proposed a wax deposition prediction method for oil wells based on the long short-term memory (LSTM) neural network to effectively extract and utilize the information content of historical dynamic monitoring data of oil wells and achieve real-time prediction and early warning for wax deposition. A predictive indicator system for predicting failures caused by wax deposition in pumping wells was established, and a wax deposition prediction dataset was prepared by integrating and normalizing collected operational data of oil wells and conducting sensitive parameter analysis. The Grey Wolf Optimization (GWO) algorithm was used to optimize the constructed LSTM prediction model, and the optimized LSTM model was trained and tested using data from the prediction dataset. The accuracy of the model was confirmed through experiments. Results demonstrate that the proposed LSTM-based wax deposition prediction method in this study achieves R-squared values of 0.8453 and 0.9439 on the test set before and after optimization, respectively, effectively improving the accuracy of wax deposition trend prediction in oil wells. This study can assist in predicting wax deposition trends in oil wells, enabling oil field workers to formulate preventive measures in advance, thereby reducing production costs and the occurrence rate of accidents. Background Night shift work may acutely disrupt the circadian rhythm, with possible carcinogenic effects. Prostate cancer has few established risk factors though night shift work, a probable human carcinogen, may increase the risk. We aimed to study the association between night shift work and chlorinated degreasing agents (CDAs) as possible endocrine disrupters in relation to aggressive prostate cancer as verified malignancies. Methods We conducted a case-cohort study on 299 aggressive prostate cancer cases and 2056 randomly drawn non-cases in the Norwegian Offshore Petroleum Workers cohort (1965–98) with linkage to the Cancer Registry of Norway (1953–2019). Work history was recorded as years with day, night, and rollover (rotating) shift work, and CDA exposure was assessed with expert-made job-exposure matrices. Weighted Cox regression was used to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for aggressive prostate cancer, adjusted for education and year of first employment, stratified by 10-year birth cohorts, and with 10, 15, and 20 years of exposure lag periods. Results Compared with day work only, an increased hazard of aggressive prostate cancer (HR = 1.86, 95% CI 1.18–2.91; P -trend = 0.046) was found in workers exposed to ≥19.5 years of rollover shift work. This persisted with longer lag periods (HR = 1.90, 95% CI 0.92–3.95; P -trend = 0.007). The exposure-hazard curve for a non-linear model increased linearly (HRs ≥1.00) for 18–26 years of rollover shift work. No association was found with CDA exposure. Conclusions Long-term exposure to rollover shift work may increase the hazard of aggressive prostate cancer in offshore petroleum workers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Studies on Niger Delta (ND) poetry have applied stylistic and discourse analyses in exploring the metaphorical elements of the deplorable ecological condition of the region, but how these elements have been used in creating an alternative positive image of the ecology, especially in Otobotekere's poetry, has not attracted enough scholarly attention. This study examines metaphors in selected poems from Otobotekere's My River. The poems were subjected to critical analysis, with insight from conceptual metaphor theory, phenomenonalistic construal, and aspects of ideology discourse. Three conceptual metaphors were observed with their respective phenomenalistic interpretations: the Niger River is a parent (sourced from the construal of ancestry, seasons and source), Niger River flow is entertainment (from the construal of theatrical display, music making and journey) and contacting Niger River is therapy (from the construal of relaxation and care giving). The mappings are associated with three natural traits imaginarily projected by the river, namely, identity, recreation, and comfort. Identity relates to the parental posture of the river, recreation deals with enjoyable nature of it, while comfort has to do with the care derived from coming in contact with the river. Through these metaphorical descriptions, Otobotekere is able to inscribe the ND ecology with an admirable landscape, which seems like an attempt by a former oil worker at greenwashing or changing the predominant ideological outlook of the environment. Thus, conceptual metaphors in Otobotekere's poetry, with their phenomenalistic interpretation, demonstrate that there is still something positive about the ND ecology. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article relates taxidermy to oil in the subculture associated with the oil sands in the Canadian West. Kitsch as it relates to postmodernism, and postmodernism to oil, share a sense of melancholy; an affect which is explored through the author's own practice as a visual artist and in the work of Claire Morgan, an artist from the UK. The affect of oil, and its implications as to mortality on the landscape are examined through an engagement with objects considered as 'remains' sourced from the local area, generally in or near the town of Fort McMurray. The author, expanding on past work, proposes a mode by which the subculture of oil workers might be engaged in environmental narratives, necessitating attentiveness to issues of class. The author's artwork describes her own personal experiences in the region and the experiences of members of her community. Subordinates' moqi (i.e., their unspoken understanding of the work expectations, intentions, and requirements of their superiors) and safety climate were introduced to examine this relationship. Method: Based on implicit followership theory, this study explores the relationship between benevolent (well meaning, kindly) leadership and employees' safety behavior, as well as the mediating role of subordinates' moqi and the moderating role of safety climate. 608 employees of a petroleum company in China were randomly selected as participants, and the data were collected in two stages. Results: The results showed that: (1) Benevolent leadership is positively correlated with employees' safety behavior. (2) Subordinates' moqi mediates between benevolent leadership and employees' safety behavior. (3) Safety climate moderates the mediating role of subordinates' moqi between benevolent leadership and employees' safety behavior. (4) The positive effect of subordinates' moqi on employees' safety behavior is enhanced under a positive safety climate. Conclusions: Benevolent leadership is an effective leadership style that enhances employees' safety behaviors by promoting a moqi state between supervisors and subordinates. The invisible environmental climate, in particular, the safety climate, should be a key focus in the promotion of safety behaviors. Practical Applications: This study further broadens the research perspective of employee safety behavior from the perspective of implicit followership theory. It also provides practical guidance for improving employee safety behavior, namely selecting and cultivating benevolent leaders, enhancing subordinates' moqi, and actively fostering a positive organizational safety climate. We examined the association between work need satisfaction (WNS) and job crafting (JC) dimensions (seeking challenges [SC], seeking resources [SR], and reducing demands [RD]), as well as the role of psychological empowerment (PE) in that relationship. Data on PE, WNS, SC, SR, and RD were collected from 275 Nigerian oil and gas workers (male = 86.2%; age range = 28 to 54 years; mean age = 38.72 years; SD = 4.68 years). Hayes' macro mediation analysis results indicated that increased WNS was associated with reduced SC and SR, and higher RD. Additionally, the results showed that high PE scores were positively associated with high SC and SR, and low RD. PE negatively mediated the association between WNS and RD. In the offshore oil industry of Takoradi, Ghana, white expatriate workers describe oil extraction as both 'the work of the Devil' and a 'labour of love'. While companies strive to produce the offshore as a timeless and spaceless fantasy of 'frictionless profit', workers emphasize oil work as a sacrificial economy where risk, loss and distance are traded in the pursuit of an ideal of family life. In this article, I argue that the operational structures and labour regime of the offshore (characterized by a rotation pattern, continuous production, distant locations, a segregated workforce, and mobile installations) create not only a model of capital accumulation, but a mode of being and making kin. I describe oil workers' aspirations to a 'good family life' and parental care, pitting time against distance, and the interpersonal ruins that remain when they fray. In probing how oil workers make petro-capitalism affectively workable, by exploring the entangled processes of extractive and reproductive labour, this article contributes to recent scholarship on the role of kinship in sustaining global capitalism. To study the occupational health risks in oil and gas industry in the Russian Arctic in order to plan and guide further occupational disease prevention programs. We studied and analyzed the data of "Working conditions and occupational morbidity" dataset with regard to the population of the Nenets and Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrugs in 2007-2021. Noise (38.9%), cooling microclimate (12.3%), non-ionizing electromagnetic fields and radiation (10.7%) were the most prevalent hazards in the oil and gas industry in the Russian Arctic. Combined effect of two hazards was observed in 19.0% of workers. During 15 years of follow-up, 54 new cases of occupational disease were identified in 50 employees, including sensorineural deafness (46.3%), radiculopathy (18.5%) and vibration disease (13.0%). Occupational diseases were mainly found in harmful classes 3.1 and 3.2 (85.1%) due to outdated technological processes and equipment design flaws (75.9%). In 2007-2021, occupational disease cases in the oil and gas industry made 14.8% of their overall count in the region. The mean rate of occupational morbidity was 0.426 cases / 10,000 employees, five times less than elsewhere in the industry (1,939 cases / 10,000 employees). The risk to obtain an occupational disease otherwise was higher compared to the oil and gas enterprises (RR=4.55; 95% CI 3.40-197.2; p<0.001). The risk to gain an occupational disease in oil and gas production in the Russian Arctic was lower compared to other industries. Petroleum goods are extensively consumed in urban areas and cause hazardous effects on individuals related to petroleum related occupations. Chemical exposure of petrol pump workers to petroleum hydrocarbons such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) is unprecedented in Pakistan. We conducted a prospective cohort study to analyze the risk of PAH exposure on hematological anomalies and health symptoms of petrol pump workers. Blood samples of 50 individuals were collected which include petrol pump workers (n = 30) and unexposed controls (n = 20). Serum phenanthrene and pyrene concentrations (µg ml−1) were estimated utilizing High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) whereas hematological parameters were analyzed by subjecting samples to count Hematocrit, Hemoglobin white and red cells in the blood. Correlation and binary logistic regression analyses were performed to depict association for individual's exposure with demographic variables and for the prediction of eye-irritation as health risk symptom among petrol pump workers. Results show that hematological parameters are affected by occupational exposure to PAHs while eye-irritation is relatively significant for smokers than the nonsmokers in exposed group (OR = 0.109, 95%; C.I = 0.013–0.881) (p < 0.05). The Palagua swamp in the Middle Magdalena region of Colombia is a territory governed by nearly a century of petro-development and armed conflict. This toxic reality, along with the disappointment of temporary legal victories and demands for environmental compensation, have left deep marks on individuals' psyche, eroding the self-confidence and spirit of communities. Drawing on archival research, secondary regional sources, and 13 semi-structured interviews with former oil workers, fishers, farmers, and women activists, we delve into the meaning, implications, and transformation of petro-development and internal colonialism. We suggest that the decolonization of being in a petrolized environment implies challenging imposed imaginaries of development and perceiving forces of internal colonialism. Oil mist adversely affects the health of workplace workers, and for this reason, regulations on the limitation of the oil-mist exposure of workers are becoming stricter. In order to reduce the amount of the exposure of workers to oil mist, it is important to effectively remove oil mist from machine tools. In this study, the collection efficiency according to the geometry of the oil-mist-collection cyclone consisting of several disks and the output power and rotation speed of the motor were evaluated. Most of the generated oil mists were less than 10 μm, and the mist removal was assessed using an optical particle counter. The cyclone airflow rate increased linearly with the rotational speed, and the rate was affected more by the cyclone geometry than by the power consumption. The mist-removal performance was significantly enhanced when plate- and cone-type disks were added to the rotating blades. The removal efficiencies of PM10 and PM2.5 under the maximum operational conditions of 5000 rpm and a flow rate of 3.73 m3/min were 93.4% and 78.4%, respectively. The removal capacity was more affected by the cyclone geometry than the rotational speed. Work stress has a significant impact on unsafe behaviors. However, there has been limited exploration of the relationship between work stress and unsafe behaviors. The aim of this research was to examine the effect of work stress on unsafe behaviors, while incorporating the mediating effect of fatigue and the moderating role of safety climate. Data were collected from 1224 front-line oil workers in China. The findings showed that work stress had a significant effect on unsafe behaviors, and that fatigue and safety climate played partial mediating and moderating roles in the relationship respectively. In terms of their sub-dimensions, (1) job certainty and job control had positive influences on unsafe behaviors, while only social support was negatively associated with unsafe behaviors. (2) Five sub-dimensions of safety climate moderated the effect of work stress on unsafe behaviors. This research contributes to the study on the mechanism of unsafe behaviors by demonstrating differential effects of work stress, fatigue and safety climate and by considering their combined effects. Background: Obesity prevalence among oil and gas industry workers over the past decade globally has been on the increase, adversely affecting workers' well-being and productivity. Therefore necessitates the increased need for both occupational, and public health policymakers to take action. Data on obesity prevalence rates among workers in the oil and gas industry of the Niger-Delta region needed to drive public and occupational health policies regarding obesity is scarce. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the prevalence of obesity and its risk factors among oil and gas industry workers in the Niger Delta Region of Nigeria. Methodology: A cross-sectional study of 280 oil and gas industry workers in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria aged 29 -to 61 years, from November - to - December 2017 was done. A structured survey data of Body Mass Index (BMI) measurements and socio-demographics was collected. Statistical analysis with Chi-Square and Multinomial Logistic Regression tests was used. Results: Results indicated that the Obesity prevalence rate among the oil and gas industry workers of the Niger Delta region was 49.6% (1=0.002). Obesity was significantly associated with a family history of cardiovascular diseases (OR=2.761 ,p=0.001,95%CI= 1.491 -5.112). Conclusion: The Obesity prevalence of 49.6% (1=0.002)among oil and gas industry workers in the Niger-Delta region, is statistically significantly high. This paper proposes a methodological approach for the decision synthesis in a geographically distributed intelligent health management system for oil workers working in offshore industry. The decision-making methodology is based on the concept of a person-centered approach to managing the health and safety of personnel, which implies the inclusion of employees as the main component in the control loop. This paper develops a functional model of the health management system for workers employed on offshore oil platforms and implements it through three phased operations that is monitoring and assessing the health indicators and environmental parameters of each employee, and making decisions. These interacting operations combine the levels of a distributed intelligent health management system. The paper offers the general principles of functioning of a distributed intelligent system for managing the health of workers in the context of structural components and computing platforms. It presents appropriate approaches to the implementation of decision support processes and describes one of the possible methods for evaluating the generated data and making decisions using fuzzy pattern recognition. The models of a fuzzy ideal image and fuzzy real images of the health status of an employee are developed and an algorithm is described for assessing the deviation of generated medical parameters from the norm. The paper also compiles the rules to form the knowledge bases of a distributed intelligent system for remote continuous monitoring. It is assumed that embedding this base into the intelligent system architecture will objectively assess the trends in the health status of workers and make informed decisions to eliminate certain problems. Communication between unions and their professional categories has undergone significant changes in recent decades, when the analog communication model was replaced by interactions in digital media. In this process, union sites stand out, the gateway to a potentially more agile, less costly and more interactive system for organizing and mobilizing workers. This article aimed to apply a comparative protocol for quality assessment, according to communication precepts, on union sites, with an intentional sampling consisting of ten different professional categories. The article is relevant to draw the attention of communication professionals, students and researchers to aspects that cannot be neglected in the system managment. We examine the role of resource materiality in extractive labour protests in Ghana. Focusing on petroleum and gold mining, we centre contestations as part of the resources' socio-natural constituents. Research data was obtained from social conflict databases, newspapers and field interviews. The analysis focused on themes and discourses on protest emergence, mobilisation, negotiation and impacts. Findings show how petroleum labour protesters use passivity and chokepoints to impede gas supply to households. Ghana petroleum workers attempt to garner structural power through workplace power, albeit unsuccessfully. Conversely, gold mineworkers protest by actively reappropriating machinery and extraction spaces. They centre protests in mining towns to emphasise their work as lifeblood. The 'landedness' of gold and the introduction of surface mining reshaped such protest tactics. Thus, materiality can help excavate the relational and comparative logic, tactics and potentialities of labour power in resource extracting countries. We suggest extractive labour to forge stronger cross-class coalitions to align workplace exploitation with broader issues of accumulation by dispossession. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Exposure to aerosols has been found to be linked to respiratory impairment. Although the effects of both indoor and outdoor exposures to particulates have been extensively reported, exposures to mists are less studied. Herein, we reported a survey of mineral oil mist toxicity in an occupational exposure scenario. For the purpose of this study, 65 lathe workers of the metal processing industry, as mineral oil mist–exposed population, were studied. Thereafter, the participants' age, smoking habits and work experience were matched with those of the control workers (n = 65) who were not occupationally exposed to mist. Thereafter, air samples were evaluated from the breathing zone of the workers using NIOSH method 5026. Plasma Interleukin-1β as a pro-inflammatory indicator was assessed in all the studied subjects. Mean ± standard deviation of mineral oil mist time-weighted average exposure in lathe workers was 7.10± 3.49 mg/m3. IL-1β cytokine levels were significantly higher in the lathe groups compared to the control group. The mean level of Interleukin-1β in the control subjects (2922 pg/L) was selected as the cut-off point of the inflammation effect. Based on this pro-inflammatory point, the results of monitoring showed that 60% of the exposed were affected. A Spearman correlation was also found between mineral oil mist exposure and inflammation in the affected subjects. Our findings highlighted the immunological potential of mineral oil mist in occupational exposure. Overall, the results of this study suggested that Interleukin-1β evaluation in mineral oil mist exposure could be considered as both an acute and chronic inflammation marker. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Energy geographers seem to agree that the carbon economy represents a symbiotic relationship between social and material components. There is less consensus, however, on how this symbiosis is best conceptualized. We critique the portrayal of carbonscapes as loosely associated, flexibly (re)arranged and easily enacted upon through small-scale radical innovation. Instead, we advocate for a historical materialist approach foregrounding people's relationship to nature and to each other through the wage relation and systems of social reproduction. The aim of this cross-sectional study was to measure the psychometric properties of the Persian version of Anticipated Turnover Scale (P-ATS) using a large sample of workers in the oil industry in Iran (N = 443). The psychometric properties of the scale were assessed using face, content, convergent, and construct validity, internal consistency, and test-retest reliability methods. A two-factor solution emerged from exploratory then confirmatory factor analyses. Content validity index and ratio were.93 and.98, respectively. There were high significant correlations between P-ATS and both perceived stress and workability. The Cronbach's alpha was.90 and test-retest correlation coefficient was.87. Airborne benzene in workplaces has progressively decreased due to preventive actions and the redesigning of facility processes. Professionals who assess occupational exposure should select techniques to detect benzene levels comparable to ambient air exposure. Thus, sensitive biomarkers are needed to discriminate the effects of confounding factors, such as smoking or sorbic acid (SA). In order to identify sensitive biomarkers and to study their correlation with confounding factors, 23 oil refinery workers were enrolled in the study; their airborne benzene exposures and biomarkers were monitored. Urinary benzene (U-B), t,t-muconic acid (t,t-MA), and S-phenylmercapturic acid (SPMA) were quantified. Urinary cotinine (U-C) and t,t-sorbic acid (t,t-SA) were evaluated to flag smoking and SA intake, respectively. The benzene measured in personal inhalation sampling ranged from 0.6 to 83.5 (median 1.7) µg/m3. The concentration range of the biomarkers, U-B, t,t-MA, and SPMA, were 18–4893 ng/m3, <10–79.4 µg/g creatinine, and <0.5–3.96 µg/g creatinine, respectively. Pearson tests were carried out; the best correlations were between airborne benzene and U-B (µg/L r = 0.820, p < 0.001) and between benzene and SPMA (g/L r = 0.812, p < 0.001), followed by benzene and t,t-MA (mg/L r = 0.465, p = 0.039). From our study, U-B and SPMA result to be the most reliable biomarkers to assess the internal number of low doses of benzene exposure, thanks to their specificity and sensitivity. What kinds of ties do agricultural and oil and gas workers form in the field, and how do they use them later on? Why do they use them differently? Scholarship highlights how weak ties can link people to valuable information, while strong ties can be critical for day-to-day survival. Yet many mechanisms affect how workers form and use social networks over time and space. Drawing on 60 interviews and observations with agricultural and oilfield workers in Texas, I examine how both groups form strong ties of fictive kinship when living together in the field far from home—pooling resources, sharing reproductive labor, and using the discourse of family to describe these relationships. Then I examine how they use these ties very differently later in practice. Oilfield workers often use their fictive kin ties to move up and around the industry across space, time, and companies: amplifying ties. In contrast, agricultural workers renew the same strong ties for survival from season to season, maintaining cyclical ties. The comparison highlights how industry mobility ladders, tempos, and geographies affect how workers can use their networks in practice. This study investigates the relationship between a project worker's attitude toward organizational change and the organization's career-related human resources management (HRM) practices. A quantitative research study utilizing survey data collected in China was conducted with project workers in the oil and gas industry. A hierarchical regression model was used to identify how HRM practices impact employee positive attitudes toward organizational change (PATOC). Study results indicate that professional development programs are not statistically significant predictors of project worker PATOC. The results also show that internal promotion opportunities can significantly predict a project professional's PATOC. New Mexico's oil and natural gas industry has the second highest occupational fatality rate among oil and gas workers in the nation. There is currently limited data available regarding the top contributing factors to occupational mortality specific to the state's oil and gas industry. This study seeks to understand causes of mortality among oil and gas workers in New Mexico between 2008 and 2018. To facilitate this study, case reports were obtained from the New Mexico Office of the Medical Investigator, and population data was acquired from the US Department of Labor. In this 11‐year span, there were 73 cases, with an average annual mortality rate of 37 deaths per 100,000 oil and gas workers. Leading causes of death were vehicle accidents (36%), cardiovascular incidents (22%), and crush injuries (19%). The majority of vehicle accidents involved single vehicle accidents, and correct seat belt use was only documented 23% of the time. The majority of cardiovascular deaths were due to arteriosclerotic and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. Alcohol was present in 18% of cases, and drugs were present in 19% of cases with methamphetamine present in 10% of investigated deaths. This is the first study to directly include cardiovascular incidents in the leading causes of death; otherwise, this study reflects national data reporting vehicle accidents and crush injuries as the leading causes of death. Going forward, prevention measures should effectively target safe driving practices focusing on seatbelt use, and mitigation of workplace drug and alcohol consumption. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: Studies point to a complex and multifactorial aetiology for sickness absence, but there is still insufficient evidence on how occupational and non-occupational risk factors contribute to this phenomenon. This study aimed to identify occupational and non-occupational factors related to sickness absence in oil industry workers, as well as their population attributable fractions (PAF). Methods: A retrospective cohort study of 2028 oil industry workers was conducted in the state of Bahia, Brazil, between January 1, 2012 and December 31, 2016. Study data were obtained from workers´ medical register. The dependent variable was the first event of sick leave for five or more days, and the independent variables were gender, age, years of work, type of work activity, level of education, work schedule, awkward working postures, body mass index, smoking, physical activity and alcohol consumption. Cox regression analysis identified risk factors to the outcome and PAF were calculated. Results: Being female (HR 1.79), being older (HR 1.44), non-graduated ones (HR 1.44), being of operational staff (HR 1.18), overweight (HR 1.13), obesity (HR 1.39), smoking (HR 1.61) and former smoking (HR 1.30) were risk factors for sickness absence in this cohort. Of all sickness absence in the study population, 6% could be attributed to overweight, 10% to obesity, and 8% to smoking. Conclusion: To prevent sick leave, we recommend programs focused on combating smoking and encouraging healthy habits, aiming at weight control and the prevention of chronic diseases. Population attributable fractions point that a universal approach, aimed at the total population will be more cost-effective than health promotion programmes restricted for high-risk populations. Rotational shift work, long-distance commuting (LDC) and fly-in/fly-out (FIFO) have become increasingly prevalent forms of labour force provision in the resource extraction sector worldwide over the last few decades. This entails the workforce being on the move, with cycles of long shifts on site and extended periods back home. This article draws on ethnographic field work carried out in Arctic Russia and Subarctic Canada among petroleum and mining workers. It focusses on sociality processes in workers' camps. I employ the notion of 'meaningful sociality' among camp inhabitants, which comes about when workers experience 'rootedness along the way'. Both notions are basic elements of a long-term and satisfactory mobile and multilocal lifestyle. This article shows how the quality of rootedness, job satisfaction and wellbeing in such a labour setting are highly dependent on intersectional conditions of equality at interpersonal and politico-economic scales. Corporations are called upon to actively facilitate the necessary material and affective camp conditions to enable meaningful sociality and provide an equity-based atmosphere for people to become rooted along their way. Purpose: The objective of this study was to assess the worker's health (WH) risk, focused on sustainable development in a work context and based on the development and application of the Worker's Health Risk Index (WHRI) in the oil extraction and production industry in Bahia, Brazil. Design/methodology/approach: The sample, obtained by quota sampling, comprised 965 participants. The development stage integrated a group of 10 specialists, including physicians, nurses, nutritionists, dentists and physical educators, all specialists in the WH area, as well as 3 experts in the area of data science. Three risk ranges were defined: "Low", "Moderate" and "High". Findings: The WHRI validation revealed reliability and reproducibility, as well as the ability to identify differences among the population studied according to sex, age group and education level. The results indicate that the WH risk is higher in men, aged above 50 years old and with a low level of education (p < 0.001). 74% of the participants are in the "Low", 21% in the "Moderate" and 5% in the "High" risk ranges. High-risk workers are also those with diabetes mellitus, altered triglyceride or glycemia levels, hypertension, poor oral hygiene and periodontal conditions, tobacco use, low levels of physical activity (all with p < 0.05), or alcohol abuse. Originality/Value: The WHRI's major contribution is to make available a useful tool for the identification of WH risk, helping to define clearer health promotion, prevention and intervention policies in the context of WH. Background: The prevalence of metabolic syndrome continues to rise sharply worldwide, seriously threatening people's health. The optimal model can be used to identify people at high risk of metabolic syndrome as early as possible, to predict their risk, and to persuade them to change their adverse lifestyle so as to slow down and reduce the incidence of metabolic syndrome.Methods: Design existing circumstances research. A total of 1468 workers from an oil company who participated in occupational health physical examination from April 2017 to October 2018 were included in this study. We established the Logistic regression model, the random forest model and the convolutional neural network model, and compared the prediction performance of the models according to the F1 score, sensitivity, accuracy and other indicators of the three models.Results: The results showed that the accuracy of the three models was 82.49,95.98 and 92.03%, the sensitivity was 87.94,95.52 and 90.59%, the specificity was 74.54, 96.65 and 94.14%, the F1 score was 0.86,0.97 and 0.93, and the area under ROC curve was 0.88,0.96 and 0.92, respectively. The Brier score of the three models was 0.15, 0.08 and 0.12, Observed-expected ratio was 0.83, 0.97 and 1.13, and the Integrated Calibration Index was 0.075,0.073 and 0.074, respectively, and explained how the random forest model was used for individual disease risk score.Conclusions: The study showed that the prediction performance of random forest model is better than other models, and the model has higher application value, which can better predict the risk of metabolic syndrome in oil workers, and provide corresponding theoretical basis for the health management of oil workers. Background: Occupational and environmental exposure to several pollutant factors such as petroleum products containing benzene has toxic effects on different body systems. The hematopoietic system and immune system are among the affected systems. This study aims to investigate the effect of benzene exposure on some blood parameters of workers at several fuel stations in Basra city, as well as to reveal if the continuous exposure may induce an inflammatory response, which is reflected by changes in some hematological and inflammatory markers.Methods: The study included two groups of males. The first group consists of 72 exposed workers at petrol stations in different locations in the Basra city. The other group is the control group, which consists of 75 nonexposed subjects (students and faculty members of the college). Different hematological parameters (WBC, RBC, HGB, MCV, MCHC, and MCH) have been evaluated. Serum concentrations of IL-6 and hs-CRP were estimated in all workers and nonexposed using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA).Results: Data showed significant hematological changes in the exposed workers, and that anemia was a common disorder among them. Furthermore, there was a significant decline in WBC and different types of WBC including lymphocytes, monocytes, and neutrophils in the exposed workers. Erythrocyte sedimentation rate and serum levels of interleukin-6 and hs-CRP were significantly higher in exposed workers than in nonexposed. A significant correlation was identified among blood parameters, while a strong inverse correlation was identified between both MCHC and ESR. The most significant inverse correlation was found between RBC and IL-6 and MCH with hs-CRP. In addition, a significant negative correlation was found between monocytes and IL-6.Conclusion: The changes in all hematology and inflammatory parameters refer to damage in the hematopoietic system due to continuous exposure to vapors of petrol products, which also result in a significant increase in interleukin-6.
