Previous studies on the clap–fling mechanism have predominantly focused on the initial downward and forward phases of flight in miniature insects, either during hovering or forward flight. However, this study presents the first comprehensive kinematic data of Coccinella septempunctata during climbing flight. It reveals, for the first time, that a clap-and-fling mechanism occurs during the initial upward and backward phase of the hind wings' motion. This discovery addresses the previously limited understanding of the clap-and-fling mechanism by demonstrating that, during the clap motion, the leading edges of beetle's wings come into proximity to form a figure-eight shape before rotating around their trailing edge to open into a "V" shape. By employing numerical solutions to solve Navier–Stokes (N-S) equations, we simulated both single hind wings' and double hind wings' aerodynamic conditions. Our findings demonstrate that this fling mechanism not only significantly enhances the lift coefficient by approximately 9.65% but also reduces the drag coefficient by about 1.7%, indicating an extension of the applicability range of this clap-and-fling mechanism beyond minute insect flight. Aim: The abundant niche‐centre hypothesis has been used to describe patterns of species abundance relative to position in ecological niche space. Such relationships, however, are inconsistently recovered and may be obscured due to non‐equilibrium distributions, such as those caused novel interactions with exotic species. Here, we explore patterns of fitness for the nine‐spotted lady (Coccinella novemnotata) following the introduction of an exotic competitor, the seven‐spotted lady beetle (C. septempunctata). We examine how niche overlap between species may be causing a range reduction for C. novemnotata through a modified abundant niche‐centre relationship. Location: North America. Methods: We applied a time‐oriented view of the abundant niche‐centre relationship for C. novemnotata, both before and after the introduction of C. septempunctata. We tested for both niche overlap and correlation between C. novemnotata body size (i.e. fitness) and the distance from its niche centroid relative to the invasion status of C. septempunctata. Results: The current niche space currently occupied by C. novemnotata is equivalent to its historic niche but has shifted to avoid overlap with C. septempunctata. A historic abundant niche‐centre relationship with larger individuals closer to the niche centroid was observed for C. novemnotata. However, this pattern changed to have smaller beetles near the niche centroid when the current distribution was considered. Main Conclusions: Fitness patterns displayed by C. novemnotata are effectively described by the abundant niche‐centre hypothesis. However, this relationship was modified with the introduction of C. septempunctata. Coccinella novemnotata is not excluded from previously suitable areas that correspond to niche space nearest to its niche centroid. Abundant niche‐centre relationships may provide strong predictions of species' fitness across a species geographic range; however, these relationships may be obscured by novel pressures resulting in non‐equilibrium states. Despite increasing recognition of the importance of the multiple dimensions of biodiversity, including functional or genetic diversity as well as species diversity, most conservation studies on ecosystem service‐providing insects focus on simple diversity measures such as species richness and abundance. In contrast, relatively little is known about the genetic diversity and resilience of pollinators or natural enemies of crop pests to population fragmentation and local extinction. The genetic diversity and demographic dynamics of remnant populations of beneficial insects in agricultural areas can be a useful indicator proving additional insights into their conservation status, but this is rarely evaluated. Although gene flow between agricultural and seminatural areas is key to maintaining genetic diversity, its extent and directionality remain largely unexplored. Here, we apply a pan‐European sampling protocol to quantify genetic diversity and structure and assess gene flow between agricultural and nearby seminatural landscapes in populations of two key ecosystem service‐providing insect species, the lady beetle Coccinella septempunctata, an important predator of aphids and other crop pests, and the bee pollinator Andrena flavipes. We show that A. flavipes populations are genetically structured at the European level, whereas populations of C. septempunctata experience widespread gene flow across the continent and lack any defined genetic structure. In both species, we found that there is high genetic connectivity between populations established in croplands and nearby seminatural areas and, as a consequence, they harbor similar levels of genetic diversity. Interestingly, demographic models for some regions support asymmetric gene flow from seminatural areas to nearby agricultural landscapes. Collectively, our study demonstrates how seminatural areas can serve as genetic reservoirs of both pollinators and natural enemies for nearby agricultural landscapes, acting as sources for recurrent recolonization and, potentially, contributing to enhancing ecosystem service and crop production resilience in the longer term. Entomopathogenic fungi and aphid predators can independently manage Aphis craccivora, Koch (Hemiptera: Aphididae) populations. It is important to assess the risk of possible fungal infections in predators when integrated in Integrated Pest Management (IPM). The virulence of two entomopathogenic fungi isolates, Beauveria bassiana (Balsamo) and Paecilomyces lilacinus (Thom) Samson have been tested against A. craccivora. A laboratory experiment was conducted to study the direct spray effect of different spores’ concentrations on the aphid adult stage. The obtained results indicated that B. bassianais was more efficient against A. craccivora according to LC50,1.2×107 spores/ml. LC50 of B. bassiana isolate was applied against the second larval instars of both the green lacewing, Chrysoperla carnea (Stephens) (Neuroptera: Chrysopidae) and the seven spotted lady beetles, Coccinella septempunctata (Linnaeus) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae). The bioassay indicated that B. bassiana was slightly harmful against Ch. carnea and significantly injurious against C. septempunctata. The total mortality was 13.3 and 43.3% for Ch. carnea and C. septempunctata, respectively. According to the high pathogenic efficiency of B. bassiana on aphids and the low efficiency on the Ch. carnea, the finding suggested that B. bassiana has the potential to be utilized as highly efficient entomopathogenic fungi in IPM programs, in conjunction with the predator Ch. carnea, against A. craccivora. Understanding of functional responses (i.e., changes in predator feeding rates with prey density) of key predators to different crop pest stages is critical to strengthening biological control, particularly in view of climate change and temperature variation. We investigated prey preferences of Coccinella septempunctata L. (Coleoptera: Coccinelidae) to egg and larval stages of a key brassicaceous pest of canola (Brassica napus L., Brassicaceae), the diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella L. (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae). First, laboratory choice and no‐choice bioassays tested the hypotheses that C. septempunctata accepts and differentially prefers two prey developmental stages (eggs and larvae). Then, C. septempunctata larvae and adults were exposed to six densities of P. xylostella eggs over 24 h in functional response bioassays that determined the number of eggs consumed. Finally, the functional response bioassays were repeated with larval prey and extended with three temperature regimes: 10, 22 and 32 °C. In both choice and no‐choice assays, C. septempunctata adults and larvae consumed more P. xylostella larvae than eggs. The functional response of C. septempunctata depended on predator developmental stage and temperature, with reduced handling time and increased attack rates and consumption under warmer conditions. At 10 and 22 °C, the functional responses of both C. septempunctata larvae and adults were of Type II, i.e., rates of prey consumption increase at decelerating rates and then plateau with increasing prey density. Our study demonstrates that both larvae and adults of C. septempunctata can consume high numbers of eggs and early instar P. xylostella larvae; these responses are temperature‐dependent with increased consumption rates at higher temperatures. Experiments examined the life histories and the eff ect of photoperiod on the expression of adult hibernal diapause in the Palearctic ladybird beetle Coccinella septempunctata, within 10 years of its discovery in North America. The study used beetles from two populations in eastern United States and focused on two aspects of diapause. First, the eff ects of daylength on the induction and depth (or duration) of diapause were examined by rearing and maintaining adult beetles from Tompkins County, New York, under six constant photoperiods until oviposition, death, or the passage of 125 days. Second, the seasonal progression of diapause maintenance and termination under natural conditions was evaluated by periodically (between October and April) testing the photoperiodic responses of overwintering adults that had been held out-of-doors; this test used beetles from Bergen County, New Jersey. Despite large variation in responses, the fi rst test indicated that LD 16:8 had a strong, but not complete, diapause deterring eff ect. About 60% of females reared at LD 16:8 oviposited without delay, whereas photoperiods with shorter daylengths yielded lower incidences of oviposition without delay (18% at LD 14:10, 0% at LD 12:12 and 10:14). Only 27% of the females that experienced daylengths of LD 18:6 and 17:7 reproduced without delay. Females that survived the full length of the experiment (125 days) without ovipositing were considered likely to express an alternate (univoltine) life-history pattern that was unaff ected by photoperiod. In the second experiment, results from the naturally overwintering C. septempunctata population indicated that females undergo signifi cant changes in their photoperiodic responses during hibernal reproductive diapause. Based on the beetles’ seasonal pattern of photoperiodic responses, we conclude that during autumn, short (and/or decreasing) daylengths play a role in diapause maintenance. By January, the photoperiodic maintenance of diapause diminishes, and by April, photoperiod no longer aff ects the timing of postdiapause reproduction. In our study, a small proportion of the overwintering adult C. septempunctata was parasitized by the koinobiont parasitoid Dinocampus coccinellae (Hymenoptera: Braconidae); data on the parasitoid’s emergence pattern indicated that photoperiod plays a role in maintaining its diapause until the middle of January. Many insects are able to walk vertically or upside down on both hard and soft surfaces. In beetles such as the ladybird (Coccinella septempunctata), intermolecular forces between tarsal setae on the footpads of the insects make this movement possible. In prior work, adhesion structures made from polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) that mimic the action of the tarsal setae have been developed. It is proposed that these adhesion structures could be attached to a simplified version of the leg of a ladybird and used in practical applications. For example, the leg structures could potentially be employed in small surveillance drones to enable attachment to surfaces during flights, in order to preserve battery power. Alternatively, the structures could be used in small robotic devices to enable walking on steeply inclined surfaces. In this program of work, the morphology and movement of the leg of a ladybird were closely studied using a 3D X-ray microscope and a high-speed microscope. The positions of the tendons that facilitated movement were identified. From this knowledge, a simplified leg structure using pin-joints was designed and then fabricated using 3-D printing. The PDMS adhesion structures were then attached to the leg structure. The tendons in the actual insect leg were replicated using thread. Typical detachment forces of about 4 N indicated that the simplified leg structure was, in principle, more than capable of supporting the weight of a small device and then detach successfully. Attachment/detachment movement operations were performed using a linear actuator and controlled remotely. Therefore, proof of concept has been demonstrated for the use of such a simplified ladybird leg structure for the attachment/detachment of small robotic devices to horizontal, inclined, or vertical surfaces. The gene encoding juvenile hormone response (Krüppel homolog1, Kr-hl) in Coccinella septempunctata was investigated by cloning and analysing expression profiles in different developmental stages and tissues by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR). C. septempunctata Kr-hl (CsKr-hl) encoded a 1338 bp open reading frame (ORF) with a predicted protein product of 445 amino acids; the latter showed high similarity to orthologs in other species and contained eight highly-conserved Zn-finger motifs for DNA-binding. CsKr-hl was expressed in different developmental stages of C. septempunctata. The expression levels of CsKr-hl in eggs, 2nd, 3rd, 4th instar larvae, and pupa were 3.31, 2.30, 7.09, 0.58, and 7.48 times the number of 1st instar larvae, respectively. CsKr-hl expression levels in female adults gradually increased at 25–30 days and were significantly higher than expression at 1–20 days. CsKr-hl expression in 20–30 days-old male adults was significantly higher than males aged 1–15 days. CsKr-hl expression levels in heads of male and female adults were significantly higher than expression levels in the thorax, adipose, and reproductive system. Interestingly, CsKr-hl expression levels in the adipose and reproductive system of female adults were significantly higher than in adult male corresponding organs, which suggest that CsKr-hl plays an important role in regulating reproductive development in C. septempunctata. Simple Summary: In this study, we investigated the efficacy of nano-formulated conventional insecticides with attractive toxic sugar baits (N-ATSB) in comparison to their traditional counterparts, commonly used for both agricultural pest and mosquito control, and also observed the non-target effect on Coccinella septempunctata. Ten conventional insecticides were employed, administered both in traditional form and as nano-particles with ATSB. The study focused on mosquito strain Anopheles gambiae collected from various crop fields, testing mortality rates through adult bioassays at 36 and 72 h. Notably, the slow response of certain insecticides resulted in higher mortality after 72 h. Significant differences in mosquito mortality were observed among all tested insecticides, particularly with high (1%) and low (0.5%) doses of both traditional and nano-formulated versions. Applying ATSB solution with each insecticide showcased a marked impact on mosquito mortality. The results revealed variations in efficacy among different insecticides, with carbosulfan (nano-formulation) demonstrating the highest toxicity, recording 98% mortality. The nano-formulated conventional insecticides showed no adverse effects on the ladybird beetle compared to their commercial counterparts. This study provides valuable insights to improve mosquito control strategies while reducing the impact on non-target organisms. It highlights the potential of N-ATSB in enhancing the effectiveness of insecticides against disease vectors. Mosquitoes, as disease vectors causing global morbidity and mortality through diseases like malaria, dengue, and Zika, necessitate mosquito population control methods. This study investigated the efficacy of nano-formulated insecticide-based sugar baits in controlling Anopheles gambiae populations and assessed their potential non-target impact on Coccinella septempunctata. This laboratory-based study employed thiolated polymer-coated attractive toxic sugar bait (ATSB) nano-formulations, delivering pesticides via nano-carriers. Adult and larvae populations of insects were collected from rice and cotton fields subjected to bioassays with 0.5% and 1% concentrations of each nano-formulated and conventional insecticide within ATSB solution, alongside a control 100% attractive sugar bait (ASB). Mosquitoes interacted overnight with insecticide-treated baits, and mortality was assessed. Further observations up to 72 h were conducted for potential delayed toxic effects. Results highlighted nano-ATSB carbosulfan's effectiveness, particularly among organophosphates and pyrethroids. Among pyrethroids, nano-ATSB cypermethrin exhibited high efficacy, while Deltamethrin displayed lower mortality. Among organophosphates, nano-ATSB chlorpyrifos induced substantial mortality. The nano-formulations of insecticide were harmless against C. septempunctata compared to their conventional form. Nano-formulations demonstrated enhanced mortality rates and prolonged efficacy against mosquitoes, having a benign impact on non-target beetles. Simple Summary: The goji berry, Lycium barbarum L., is a prominent indigenous medicinal plant in Northern China. The high nutrient content of fruits may make goji berry plants susceptible to pests. The goji berry psyllid Bactericera gobica is an extensively prevalent and devastating pest. The current primary approaches employed for goji berry psyllid prevention involve the utilization of chemical pesticides, which may potentially pose risks to human health and the environment. The advantage of biological control, in contrast to alternative methods, lies in its provision of a cost-effective and sustainable control system with minimal adverse effects. By comparing the predatory performance of three ladybird species preying on psyllids, our study suggests that each species possesses distinct advantages as potential predators of psyllids. Further field studies are necessary to determine the most promising ladybird species for rapid impact through inundative biological control, considering the specific environmental adaptability of each ladybird species. This study is expected to provide evidence supporting the potential of promising ladybird species as an effective biological control agent against goji berry psyllids. The psyllid Bactericera gobica is a serious pest in goji berry orchards. The current primary psyllid control methods involve chemical pesticides, which pose potential risks to human health and the environment. The implementation and promotion of biological control agents should receive increased attention as an alternative approach to safeguarding goji berry orchards. To compare the predatory performance of three potential biocontrol agents of psyllids, including Harmonia axyridis, Coccinella septempunctata and Hippodamia variegata, the functional response and intraspecific interactions of adult ladybirds were studied under laboratory conditions. We observed a significantly higher searching efficiency (0.84 ± 0.09) in H. axyridis when preying on psyllids compared to H. variegata (0.55 ± 0.05), whereas the handling time for psyllids was considerably longer in H. axyridis (7.33 ± 0.83 min) than in H. variegata (5.67 ± 0.97 min). The impact of intraspecific interactions on H. variegata (0.44 ± 0.04) was significantly greater than that on C. septempunctata (0.29 ± 0.03), whereas the maximum consumption by C. septempunctata (223.35 ± 41.3) significantly exceeded that of H. variegata (133.4 ± 26.9). Our study suggests that each of these three ladybird species possesses distinct advantages as a potential predator of psyllids. However, further field studies are required to determine the most promising ladybird species for rapid impact through inundative biological control, taking into consideration the specific environmental adaptability of each ladybird species. The present study is expected to provide evidence that supports the potential of incorporating promising ladybird species as an effective biological control agent in goji berry orchard management programs. Rate of disappearance of fresh carcasses of various small palatable and unpalatable invertebrates exposed on soil surface in a semi-natural habitat showed how much they are protected chemically and mechanically without the contribution of their behaviour. Highly attractive species for the scavengers included woodlice Porcellionides pruinosus, young crickets Acheta domesticus, larvae of mealworm Tenebrio molitor and earwigs Forficula auricularia. Moderately attractive species was the lesser mealworm Alphitobius diaperinus. Least attractive species for the scavengers were firebugs Pyrrhocoris apterus and all ladybirds: Coccinella septempunctata, Hippodamia undecimnotata, Harmonia axyridis (adults and larvae), and Tytthaspis sedecimpunctata. Size of organisms and toughness of carcasses were not found to have influence on the speed of scavenging. Scavenging at night was slightly quicker than at day. Coccinella septempunctata (Linnaeus) and Hippodamia convergens (Guérin Méneville) are important predators of many pests of agricultural crop importance. Feeding these predators with artificial diets (ADs) is an important means to achieve large-scale production. In this study, the effects of five different artificial diets on the development, survival and reproduction of the two predators were evaluated under laboratory conditions (26 ± 2 °C, 60% RH, and 12:12 (L:D) h). The artificial diets consisted of various main ingredients, including barley flour (BF-AD), soybean flour (SF-AD), potato flour (PF-AD), frozen aphids (FA-AD), and milk powder (MP-AD). Both predators successfully underwent their entire development on all of these formulated artificial diets. The results of this study show that the black bean aphid (Aphis fabae (Scopoli)) and artificial diets SF-AD and PF-AD appear to be the most suitable for mass rearing of the predators. These diets decreased the total pre-adult development period, increased female and male longevity, significantly increased larval and pupal survival rates, adult emergence and weight, oviposition period, and fecundity, and significantly decreased the pre-oviposition period compared to the other artificial diets tested. Similarly, the data showed that the highest values of growth index and success index were obtained with the predators fed the black bean aphid diet (9.6–15.0 and 1.0–1.0, respectively), followed by artificial diets SF-AD (9.1–13.5 and 0.9-1.0, respectively) and PF-AD (8.3–10.7 and 0.8–0.9, respectively). The artificial diets, particularly SF-AD and PF-AD, can be used for mass rearing of C. septempunctata and H. convergens for biological control applications and adult rearing during aphids scarcity. When Coccinella septempunctata L. was fed on an artificial diet, development was prolonged and survival and reproduction were decreased, thus negatively affecting population growth. Juvenile hormone and moulting hormones are important factors in insect reproduction and development. This study aims to screen out the optimal hormones that can solve the problems such as slow population growth of the C. septempunctata during mass rearing, thus improving their effectiveness as a biological control agent. The effects of juvenile hormone analogues and moulting hormones on C. septempunctata larval growth and adult reproduction were investigated by supplementing an artificial diet with different doses of methoprene, kinoprene, juvenile hormone Ш, fenoxycarb and 20‐hydroxyecdysone. Multiple parameters were measured for C. septempunctata including development, survival, pupation, emergence, pre‐oviposition, fecundity and hatching rates. The addition of juvenile hormone analogues to the diet significantly lengthened larval development times and reduced pupation and emergence. Conversely, juvenile hormone analogues significantly shortened pre‐oviposition period, reduced survival and increased fecundity. The shortest pre‐oviposition period was 9.6 days, and the highest oviposition number was 578 eggs in response to 5 μL kinoprene. The highest hatching rate was 66% in 1.7 mg 20‐hydroxyecdysone treatment. The results of this study provide a theoretical basis for hormone selection and dosage in C. septempunctata artificial diets, thus enhancing the survival, pupation and emergence of larvae and improving the fecundity and hatching rate of ladybird adults. Migration is costly in terms of increased energy expenditure and exposure to risks encountered en route. These factors can lead to a higher mortality among migrants compared with more sedentary life history stages.Insect migrants are incredibly numerous, but as they are less conspicuous than vertebrate migrants and as migration often occurs at high altitude and over a broad front, it can be difficult to study migration‐related mortality. A major source of information on migration‐related mortality comes from cadavers found on the strandline following unsuccessful sea crossings.Here, we analyse strandline mortality following a 100 km crossing of open ocean along the Eastern Mediterranean Flyway from the Middle East mainland to the island of Cyprus by tens of millions of insects.All strandline recordings were of two species of beetles, the seven‐spot ladybird Coccinella septempunctata and the carabid beetle Calosoma olivieri, whereas only nine individuals of C. septempunctata were caught successfully arriving with the rest of the insect assemblage over the ocean.Major strandings were associated with easterly winds, suggesting origins from the Middle East mainland, with the individuals documented as extremely weak and unable to fly or dead.Our results suggest that beetles are weaker migrants than other members of the migratory insect assemblage, with the sea crossing too far for the great majority to fly, leading to high mortality. Simple Summary: The aphid Aphis gossypii Glover is a serious pest that inflicts severe damage upon goji berry plants in China. The current prevailing approach to pest prevention involves the utilization of chemical insecticides, which presents potential risks to both human health and the environment. The improper use of pesticides leads to the emergence of drug-resistant pests, thereby contributing to the resurgence of rampant pest populations. Therefore, the conservation and management of predators in agricultural ecosystems should receive increased attention, given their crucial role. Ladybirds have previously been identified as the primary predators of aphid species. However, their effectiveness as biological agents against aphids on goji berry plants remains uncertain. We found that the potential of ladybirds in controlling the aphid populations is promising, thus possibly making a contribution to environmental protection. By conducting an analysis of functional responses, intraspecific competition, and a semi-field study, we have determined that H. axyridis and C. septempunctata exhibit greater potential as biocontrol agents against aphids in comparison to H. variegata. Notably, future field studies will play a pivotal role in ensuring the effective implementation of a biological control program. The aphid, Aphis gossypii Glover, is identified as a significant pest that causes severe damage to goji berries in China. To analyze the ladybird consumption of aphids, the functional responses of three ladybird species, Harmonia axyridis, Coccinella septempunctata, and Hippodamia variegata, and intraspecific competition among ladybird individuals were evaluated under laboratory conditions. Moreover, the practical impact of ladybirds on aphid population reduction was investigated in semi-field conditions. We found that all adult ladybirds of the three species exhibited a type II functional response toward aphids. According to Holling's disc equation, H. axyridis exhibited the highest searching efficiency (a = 0.79), while C. septempunctata had the shortest handling time (Th = 5.07 min) among the three ladybird species studied. Additionally, intraspecific competition had a greater impact on H. variegata (m = 0.41) compared to the other two ladybird species. The semi-field study demonstrated that H. axyridis (83.9% reduction) and C. septempunctata (78.7% reduction) exhibited higher efficacy in reducing aphid populations compared to H. variegata (27.3% reduction). This study suggests that H. axyridis and C. septempunctata exhibit potential as effective biological control agents against aphids on goji berry plants and highlights the importance of considering intraspecific competition. However, the results obtained from laboratory and semi-field studies cannot be directly extrapolated to field conditions due to the simplification of these experimental systems. Beneficial ladybird beetles are parasitized by several species of parasitoid wasps and flies. Samples of ladybirds from Western Iran including Lorestan, Khuzestan and Kurdistan provinces revealed the presence of the parasitoid Oomyzus scaposus (Thomson, 1878). Adult wasps emerged from larvae and pupae of the ladybird Coccinella septempunctata L. (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae). The identity of the wasp was determined by its morphology and confirmed by sequences of cytochrome oxidase, subunit I. A comparison of these DNA barcodes from other species of Oomyzus and other populations of O. scaposus showed a close relationship to the Russian population. Flower-rich habitats are crucial for promoting biodiversity and ecosystem services within agricultural ecosystems, such as pollination and pest control. The present study investigates the efficacy of employing floral structures as a criterion for the selection of plant species in order to enhance the attraction of natural enemies within cucumber greenhouses, consequently augmenting floral resources. The results of our study provide evidence that flower strips have a beneficial effect on the fitness of critical natural predators, while not facilitating the proliferation of detrimental insect species. These findings exhibit potential for enhancing pest-management services in the agricultural sector. The findings of our study demonstrate that pest levels within greenhouse environments closely resemble those observed in real-world commercial cropping systems. As a result, the introduction of Coccinella septempunctata and Menochilus sexmaculatus biocontrol agents is confirmed to be a reliable and efficient method for pest management. The phenomenon of predator–prey density dependency is recognized as a crucial element in the implementation of biological control strategies. Furthermore, we investigate the impact of floral resources on the reproductive capacity of indigenous predators. The impact of Coriandrum sativum on fertility is substantial, indicating that the presence of a varied plant assortment with overlapping flowering periods can prolong the availability of floral resources. Three ladybird (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) species, Coccinella septempunctata L., C. undecimpunctata L. and Hippodamia variegata (Goeze), were recorded as hosts of Dinocampus coccinellae (Schrank, 1802) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) in the Khuzestan and Kurdistan provinces of Iran. Coccinella undecimpunctata is a new host of this parasitoid in the country and both provinces are its new distribution records. The rates of emergence of D. coccinellae from field-collected C. septempunctata and H. variegata were very low (below 1%), while C. undecimpunctata was parasitized to a much higher degree (26.7%). This study was conducted to determine distribution pattern and related parameters of spotted alfalfa aphid, Therioaphis maculata (Buckten), pea aphid, Acyrthosiphon pisum (Harris) and two coccinellid species (Coccinella septempunctata L. and Hippodamia variegata Goeze) in six alfalfa fields during two growing seasons, 2016 and 2017. Weekly sampling was started when alfalfa plants reached 10 cm in height and continued until harvest. Each field was divided into 20m×20m plots. Two samples per plot per sampling time were randomly taken using a 1 × 1 m quadrat, to count adult coccinellids. Twenty alfalfa stems (longer than 10cm) per plot were randomly cut and shaken eight times on a white pan to record the aphids' density. The aphids that fell into the pan were counted and recorded. The ratio of variance to mean, as well as Taylor’s power law (TPL) and Iwao’s patchiness index (IPI), were used to determine the spatial distribution patterns of the insects. The variance exceeded the mean on all sampling dates, which may imply an aggregative distribution. Aggregation was also confirmed by using regression coefficient of both TPL (parameter b) and coefficient of IPI (β), which both were significantly above unity. Correlation between aphid counts and those of the coccinellids indicated that there was a positive but weak relationship between predator and prey densities in the fields, although a weak correlation may imply that factors other than prey accessibility contribute to the spatial distribution of the predators. Using different statistical methods provides useful information about the spatial distribution and dispersal pattern of aphids and natural enemies in alfalfa fields, and this information can be used in the biological control of pests. Eco-friendly natural enemies have received increasing attention in recent years due to their contribution in reducing the use of chemical pesticides. However, the deleterious effects of pesticides on these natural enemies remain to be understood. In the present study, toxic and behavioral effect of eight most commonly used pesticides in different orchards of Kashmir were tested against aphidophagus predator, Coccinella septempunctata Linnaeus, 1758 under the laboratory conditions. According to IOBC classification, alphamethrin was moderately harmful to the adults of C. septempunctata whereas, other pesticides were slightly harmful under direct exposure of pesticides. However, all the pesticides resulted harmful to the immature stages of C. septempunctata. Under the residual effect of pesticides on adults of C. septempunctata, thiamethoxam and dimethoate caused highest mortality. All the insecticides were observed to be toxic to the grubs of C. septempunctata, whereas, fungicides were moderately harmful to the grubs of C. septempunctata. Spodoptera frugiperda (JE Smith, 1797) prefer maize over a diverse range of host plants threatening food security in West Africa. Since the invasion of S. frugiperda in Africa in 2016, farmers have developed different pest management strategies including the use of pesticides from various sources which may prove dangerous to humans' health and environment. In order to devise integrated pest management knowledge of damage incidence in ecological zones and respectively associated natural enemies is needed. Survey was carried out in different agroecological zones including "lar land zone (ZAE 6), depression zone (ZAE 7) and fisheries zone (ZAE 8) of maize production in southern Benin during June to October, 2019. A total of 1350 larvae and 26 egg masses of S. frugiperda were collected by sampling 60 untreated fields of maize crops from 20 locations. An average of 120 eggs were counted in total or each egg mass. The results showed different levels of pest damage upto 100% plants devastated by the attack of the pest. Natural enemies were brought in the laboratory for identification. The parasitism rate was 3.35 %. The parasitoids identified from Hymenoptera were Cotesia icipe Fernandez-Triana & Fiaboe, Chelonus bifoveolatus (Szépligeti), Telenomus remus Nixon, Charops Sp., Pristomerus pallidus (Kriechbaumer) with overall parasitism of 3.33. The predators belonged to the families-Coccinellidae [Coccinella septempunctata], Forficulidae [Forficula senegalensis (Serville)] and Formicidae [Pheidole megacephala (Fabricius), Lasius niger (Linnaaeus)]. The most abundant predators were from Formicidae (94%), followed by Coccinellidae (3.67%) and Forficulidae (1.84%). Minor predators (0.57%) of different such other families as Mantidae, Reduviidae (Rhynocoris sp.) and Pentatomidae were also collected from the fields. This study was carried out to determine the natural enemies and distribution of Tingidae family species in Malkara, Saray, Süleymanpaşa, and Şarköy districts in Tekirdağ. Surveys were conducted on woody plants in 2011-2012. Field surveys were carried out at 10-day intervals between the beginning of April and the end of October. Visual inspection and shaking methods were used for sample collection. As a result of the surveys, as a natural enemy of Tingidae family species belonging Coleoptera order from the Coccinellidae family; Coccinella septempunctata (Linnaeus, 1758), Exochomus quadripustulatus (Linnaeus, 1758), Oenopia conglobata (Linnaeus, 1758), Stethorus gilvifrons (Mulsant, 1850), Hemiptera order from Anthocoridae family; Anthocoris nemoralis (Fabricius, 1794), Orius niger (Wolff, 1811), Orius vicinus (Ribaut, 1923), from Miridae family; Deraeocoris lutescens (Schilling, 1837), Stethoconus pyri (Mella, 1869) and Neuroptera order from Chrysopidae family; Chrysoperla carnea (Stephens, 1836), a total of 10 predatory species were identified. Erythmelus panis (Enock, 1909) from Mymaridae family of Hymenoptera order was determined as egg parasitoid. Stethoconus pyri was the most common species in Tekirdağ province, followed by C. septempuctata while A. nemoralis and S. gilvifrons were the least common species, respectively. The distribution of natural enemies was almost similar to the rate of their presence. It has been determined that all natural enemies in the province feed on Stephanitis pyri (Fabricius, 1775) (Pear lace bug). O. conglobata with Monosteira unicostata (Mulsant & Rey, 1852), except the Pear lace bug; A. nemoralis, O. niger and O. vicinus were also recorded to feed on Corythuca ciliata (Say, 1832). Many of the detected natural enemies are the first record for Tekirdağ fauna. Among these species, according to the observations and the data obtained, S. pyri feeding on Pear lace bug and Orius species feeding on C. ciliata are thought to be more important than other natural enemies. In order to improve the rearing of Coccinella septempunctata L. (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae), nutrients such as shrimp, pollen, honey, and lard were added to the basic artificial diet, and the effects of the artificial diet on biological parameters and digestive enzymes were evaluated. The results show that beetles feeding on the supplemented diet exhibited pupation, emergence, fecundity, and hatching rates that were 102.69%, 125.02%, 162.33%, and 119.90% of those supplied with the basic diet, respectively. The addition of shrimp and pollen to the basal diet improved protease, trypsin, chymotrypsin, and aminopeptidase activity in larvae and female adults. The addition of lard improved lipase activity in female adults, and the addition of honey improved invertase activity in adults of both sexes. The seven-spotted ladybug is a widespread species in the Palearctic, and also acclimated in the Nearctic. It has been classified into different species on the basis of certain morphological characteristics, the geographical origin, and the genitalia structure of both sexes. The morphotypes of North Africa and the Canary Islands are separated, under the name of Coccinella algerica Kovář, 1977, from the rest of the Palearctic and Nearctic populations of Coccinella septempunctata Linnaeus, 1758. In this study, we investigated, on one hand, whether potential reproductive barriers have been established during evolution between the geographically isolated North African and the European seven-spotted ladybugs by performing reciprocal crosses. On the other hand, we assessed their cuticular hydrocarbon (CHC) divergence by GC–MS. The 33 CHCs indentified are with a skeleton of 23 to 32 carbon atoms. These CHCs are linear alkanes (24.9 ± 3.6%) and methyl-branched alkanes (75.1 ± 3.6%) including monomethylalkanes (48.8 ± 2.4%), dimethylalkanes (24.6 ± 4.0%) and trimethylalkanes (2.0 ± 1.0%). Although all the CHC compounds identified are present in the two seven-spotted ladybugs and their F1 and F2 hybrids, their profiles diverged significantly. However, these chemical divergences have not altered the sexual communication to cause reproductive isolation. The two ladybugs interbreed and leave viable and fertile offspring, with even a heterosis effect on reproductive performances, without phenotypic degradation after the F1 generation. So, these chemical differences are just an intraspecific variability in response to heterogeneous environments. Biological invasions are usually examined in the context of their impacts on native species. However, few studies have examined the dynamics between invaders when multiple exotic species successfully coexist in a novel environment. Yet, long‐term coexistence of now established exotic species has been observed in North American lady beetle communities. Exotic lady beetles Harmonia axyridis and Coccinella septempunctata were introduced for biological control in agricultural systems and have since become dominant species within these communities. In this study, we investigated coexistence via spatial and temporal niche partitioning among H. axyridis and C. septempunctata using a 31‐year data set from southwestern Michigan, USA. We found evidence of long‐term coexistence through a combination of small‐scale environmental, habitat, and seasonal mechanisms. Across years, H. axyridis and C. septempunctata experienced patterns of cyclical dominance likely related to yearly variation in temperature and precipitation. Within years, populations of C. septempunctata peaked early in the growing season at 550 degree days, while H. axyridis populations grew in the season until 1250 degree days and continued to have high activity after this point. C. septempunctata was generally most abundant in herbaceous crops, whereas H. axyridis did not display strong habitat preferences. These findings suggest that within this region H. axyridis has broader habitat and abiotic environmental preferences, whereas C. septempunctata thrives under more specific ecological conditions. These ecological differences have contributed to the continued coexistence of these two invaders. Summary: RNA interference (RNAi)‐based technologies are starting to be commercialized as a new approach for agricultural pest control. Horizontally transferred genes (HTGs), which have been transferred into insect genomes from viruses, bacteria, fungi or plants, are attractive targets for RNAi‐mediated pest control. HTGs are often unique to a specific insect family or even genus, making it unlikely that RNAi constructs targeting such genes will have negative effects on ladybugs, lacewings and other beneficial predatory insect species. In this study, we sequenced the genome of a red, tobacco‐adapted isolate of Myzus persicae (green peach aphid) and bioinformatically identified 30 HTGs. We then used plant‐mediated virus‐induced gene silencing (VIGS) to show that several HTGs of bacterial and plant origin are important for aphid growth and/or survival. Silencing the expression of fungal‐origin HTGs did not affect aphid survivorship but decreased aphid reproduction. Importantly, although there was uptake of plant‐expressed RNA by Coccinella septempunctata (seven‐spotted ladybugs) via the aphids that they consumed, we did not observe negative effects on ladybugs from aphid‐targeted VIGS constructs. To demonstrate that this approach is more broadly applicable, we also targeted five Bemisia tabaci (whitefly) HTGs using VIGS and demonstrated that knockdown of some of these genes affected whitefly survival. As functional HTGs have been identified in the genomes of numerous pest species, we propose that these HTGs should be explored further as efficient and safe targets for control of insect pests using plant‐mediated RNA interference. Cathepsin L protease, which belongs to the papain-like cysteine proteases family, is an important player in many physiological and pathological processes. However, little was known about the role of cathepsin L in ladybird beetles (Coccinella septempuctata Linnaeus) during diapause. Here, we analyzed the characteristics of cathepsin L (CsCatL) in the females of C. septempunctata and its role during the diapause of the ladybeetle. CsCatL was cloned and identified from beetle specimens by rapid amplification of cDNA-ends (RACE). The cDNA sequence of CsCatL was 971 bp in length, including an 843 bp open reading frame encoding a protein of 280 amino acids. It was identified as the cathepsin L group by phylogenetic analysis. Knockdown of CsCatL by RNA interference led to decreased expression levels of fatty acid synthase 2 (fas 2) genes and suppressed lipid accumulation. Furthermore, silencing the CsCatL gene distinctly reduced diapause-related features and the survival of female C. spetempunctata under diapause-inducing conditions. The results suggested that the CsCatL gene was involved in fatty acid biosynthesis and played a crucial role in the survival of adult C. septempunctata during the diapause preparation stage. In holometabolous insects, adult develops through larval and pupal stages. Limb regeneration has an impact on different life traits of organisms. In the present study, we found that limb regeneration of two ladybird species of different body size affected their life attributes. The fourth instar of Propylea dissecta and ladybird Coccinella septempunctata were taken from laboratory stock and ablated. Larvae were observed until adult emergence. Emerged adults were kept in different mating treatments. Unregenerated adults of ladybirds took more time to commence mating with shorter copulation and reduced fecundity and per cent viability. Botanical products have an important role in the development of sustainable and ecologically friendly agriculture. Therefore, this study is focused on assessing the insecticidal activity of botanical products (Pyrethro Natura and Rapax) applied individually and in combination with an organic fertilizer (Fitasio) against Acyrthosiphon pisum. Further the change in the plastid pigments concentrations, productivity as well as product selectivity on Coccinella septempunctata larvae was explored. The experiment was conducted at the fields of the Institute of Forage crops, Pleven, Bulgaria from 2019 to 2021 year in spring forage peas. An alternate method of assessing the insecticide efficacy was used based on insect days and cumulative insect days. It was found that the mixture of Pyrethro Natura and Phytasio was associated with the highest overall efficacy against A. pisum and a reduction of cumulative insect days by 64.4% through a span of 9 days with an additive interaction between compounds. The botanical products used had a beneficial effect on the vegetative development of the plants. The Pyrethro Natura in combination with Fitasio provided the highest productivity of 30.7%, content of plastid pigments, and the best plant physiological condition. Botanicals were harmless with toxicity not exceeding 25% against ladybug larvae and displayed an important perspective due to their multiple benefits. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study was carried out to determine the population fluctuation and predators of Tinocallis (sappocallis) saltans (Nevsky, 1929) (Hemiptera: Aphididae) found to be intensely damaged in the Elm (Ulmus glabra Hudson) plant in Erzurum (Atatürk University Campus) between May and September in 2016 and 2017. T. saltans was determined for the first time on this elm species in Turkey with this study. Elm tip shoots were taken from the area at 4 days intervals and brought to the laboratory condition and adults and nymphs counts were made in this study. In addition, predator species were collected with the help of aspirator, atrap and Japanese umbrella. Pre-adult periods of predator species were brought to the laboratory together with the shoots and adult outputs were obtained by culturing. At the end of the study, T. saltans in July 27 (56.83 adult+nymph), 4 August (52.32 adult+nymph) and 24 August (47.66 adult+nymph) in 2016, and 12 August (39.36 adult+nymph) in 2017, has reached the highest number of individuals per leaf. A total of 12 predators from 4 Coccinellidae (Adalia bipunctata (L.), Adalia fasciatopunctata revelieri Mulsant; Coccinella septempunctata (L.), Harmonia quadripunctata (Pontoppidan) of Coleoptera; 1 Anthocoridae (Orius horvathi Reut.), 1 Nabidae family (Nabis pseudoferus Rem.) of Hemiptera; 5 Syrphidae (Episyrphus balteatus (De Geer), Eristalis pratorum (Meigen), Sphaerophoria rueppelli (Wiedemann), Sphaerophoria scripta (L.), Syritta pipiens (L.) of Diptera; 1 Chrysopidae (Chrysoperla carnea (Stephens)) of Neuroptera were identified in this study. Of these species respectively, A. f. revelieri (39 individuals), H. quadripunctata (21 individuals), C. semtempunctata ve Ch. carnea (16 individuals) and E. balteatus (14 individual) were the species with the highest number of individuals. T. saltans for all of these predator species were determined as the new host for the first time in this study in Turkey. To further optimise an artificial diet for rearing the ladybird beetle, we investigated the effects of juvenile hormone (JH), honey, shrimp, rape pollen, lard, and other factors on the biological characteristics of C. septempunctata. Survival and pupation rates of larvae were decreased when JH and lard were added to the artificial diet; however, the addition of lard increased egg hatching to 73.70%, which was significantly higher than the control diet (50.56%). Adding honeybee pupae to the artificial diet shortened the preoviposition period to 7.64 d, compared to 10.36 d in the control diet. Adding honey, shrimp, and honeybee pupae to the diet resulted in 465.12, 452.35, and 423.01 eggs laid, respectively, which was significantly higher than the control diet. The pupation and emergence rates of C. septempunctata larvae fed an artificial diet without JH were significantly higher than those fed an artificial diet with JH; thus, JH and lard should not be added to artificial diets during the larval stage. During the adult stage, adding rape pollen, shrimp, honey, lard, and honeybee pupae to the diet could improve the fecundity of C. septempunctata. The family Coccinellidae (Coleoptera) includes important predatory natural enemies in agricultural crops. To survive, this group uses different occurring resources across the landscape; therefore, the landscape can influence the Coccinellidae community in agroecosystems. In this context, this work aims to evaluate the response of the Coccinellidae community to the landscape context within a gradient of distances from vineyards managed under sustainable production methods. For that, Coccinellidae were sampled in thirty-five vineyards distributed by six wine Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) regions of Portugal, and landscape metrics—composition and configuration—were calculated in a 2000 m, 1500 m, 1000 m, 750 m, and 500 m buffers around the vineyards. Then, Coccinellidae species were identified, and the response of the Coccinellidae to the landscape metrics was analyzed. In total, 326 Coccinellidae from 21 species were collected. The most abundant species were Scymnus apetzi, Scymnus interruptus, Scymnus subvillosus, Coccinella septempunctata, and Stethorus pusillus, which together represented 83.4% of the total collected individuals. Most specimens were concentrated in July and at the vegetation cover. Results from the statistical analysis (Generalized Linear Mixed Models) indicated that the presence of seminatural habitat surrounding the crop may favor Coccinellidae, while habitat fragmentation seems detrimental for them. Natural variation in light has historically correlated with seasonality, providing an honest cue to organisms with seasonal life history cycles. However, with the onset of widespread light at night (LAN), the reliability of light as a cue has decreased in polluted areas, making its timing or intensity potentially clash with temperature trends. These clashing cues may influence biological systems on multiple levels. Yet, a few studies have connected behavioral underpinnings and larger community-level processes, resulting in a knowledge gap bridging individual-, population-, and community-level responses to mismatched cues. We experimentally investigated impacts of cool temperature and LAN on a lady beetle–aphid–fava system to test how light and temperature influenced aphid population growth and their underlying behavioral drivers. We used Coccinella septempunctata and Coleomegilla maculata beetles to understand the interaction of the environment and predation on pea aphid (Acyrthosiphon pisum) population growth. Aphids and their predators reacted differently to variation in light and temperature, influencing the strength of aphid-driven and predator-driven dynamics in the different conditions. We observed evidence of aphid-driven dynamics in the cool, light conditions where aphids excel and exhibited strong anti-predator behavior. In contrast, we found stronger predator-driven dynamics in warm conditions where lady beetle predatory success was higher. Pine-feeding aphid species cause considerable aesthetic damages and decrease the decorative value in the urban green spaces. In present study, aphids and associated ladybird predators were monitored on Pinus mugo Turra in Mashhad metropolis (Northeastern Iran) during four seasons in 2016. We aimed to evaluate the seasonal dynamics of pine-feeding aphid species and associated ladybird species in the urban green spaces along with determination their diversity and abundance. We identified four aphid species belonging to two genera of the subfamily Lachninae associated with eleven species of their natural coccinellid enemies. The highest numbers of aphid individuals were observed at the end of March till mid-August. Low numbers of coccinellids were present in March, but later (May–September) they exhibited a rapid increase, upon migration of aphids from the Mugo pine trees. Eulachnus tuberculostemmatus (Theobald) is considered as the dominant species, with a relative abundance of 32.97% whereas the highest abundance of aphids was detected in spring (45.84%). Cinara pinihabitans (Mordvilko) was the most common species in spring (43.06%) and summer (29.45%). Among the collected ladybirds, the seven-spot ladybird, Coccinella septempunctata L. was the dominant species with a relative abundance of 35.46% whilst the highest abundance of aphids was detected in spring (57.93%). C. septempunctata was the most prevalent identified coccinellid in spring (51.74%) and summer (21.51%), however, in fall and winter its presence declined (18.6 and 8.13% respectively). Scymnus nubilus (Mulsant) is reported as a new record for the Razavi Khorasan province exhibiting the lowest relative abundance (0.2%). Our results showed that ladybirds alongside high temperatures in the summer reduce the population growth of Mugo pine pest aphids in the urban green spaces of the target region. The potential importance of the ladybird dominant species as the effective biocontrol agents of aphids infesting Mungo pine trees could further trigger the reduction of insecticidal applications in parks and other green spaces. Functional morphology of sensillae on the antennae and mouthparts of two co-generic aphidophagous ladybird species, viz. Coccinella septempunctata and Coccinella transversalis (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) were studied using scanning electron microscopy to determine their structure, functions and sex-specific variations. Their mouthparts comprise of mandible, maxilla, maxillary palps, labrum, labium and labial palps. Sensillae were present on different mouthparts, viz. maxillary palp, labial palps, and the clypeus. Maxillary palps were the main prey-holding apparatus with three distinct regions, viz. proximal, middle, and distal segments. Labial palps provide initial gripping of the prey with three similar regions as that of maxillary palps. Six different types of sensillae were identified on the mouthparts of C. septempunctata, viz. chaetica, trichoidea, coeloconica, placoidea, basiconica, and styloconica, while those on C. transversalis had seven different sensillae with the inclusion of sensilla campaniformia. The female antennae were greater in length than the male ones in both species. The scape and pedicel segments of the male antennae were greater in length, while flagellomeres were shorter in length than those of the female antennae of the two species. Six types of sensillae, viz. chaetica, trichoidea, basiconica, coeloconica, ampullacea, and campaniformia were identified on C. septempunctata antennae, while those of C. transversalis had eight with the addition of sensillae sporangia, and styloconica. Simple Summary: Changes in prey biology driven by predation threats that do not involve direct consumption are referred to as non-consumptive effects (NCEs). In general, NCEs are considered common and can affect herbivores sometimes stronger than the direct consumptive effects. However, how the NCEs of predators affect the development, survival, fecundity, and population growth of prey has not been well documented, which is the primary consideration for the compatibility of prey with its natural enemies in agricultural ecosystems. We examined the NCEs of the predator Coccinella septempunctata on the life-history traits and population growth of Sitobion miscanthi via caged predator (i.e., S. miscanthi co-existed with caged C. septempunctata) and caged prey (i.e., C. septempunctata co-existed with caged S. miscanthi) treatments by employing the age-stage, two-sex life table. The findings indicate that S. miscanthi could respond to the predation risk of caged predators by either accelerating the developmental rate or reducing the net reproductive rate, while S. miscanthi might reduce their fitness in response to the predation risk of caged prey. Furthermore, S. miscanthi might also increase the number of winged morphs under both of the above treatments. The results have practical ramifications on managing this economically important pest on wheat production with reduced insecticide applications. We herein employed the age-stage, two-sex life table to examine the NCEs of the predator Coccinella septempunctata on the life-history traits and population growth of prey Sitobion miscanthi via caged predator (prey co-existing with caged predator) and caged prey (predator co-existing with caged prey) treatments with daily different exposure times (i.e., 0 h (control), 12 h, and 24 h). The results indicated that the predation risk of a caged predator could reduce the first nymphal duration and net reproductive rate (R0) of S. miscanthi at 12 h, and the first nymphal duration, preadult duration, and mean generation time (T) at 24 h. However, the predation risk of the caged prey resulted in the prolongation of the pre-adult development time and total pre-reproductive period (TPRP) as well as lowered the intrinsic rate of increase (r), finite rate of increase (), R0, life expectancy, and reproductive value of S. miscanthi after both 12 h and 24 h. Furthermore, the predation risk of both the caged predator and caged prey could increase the percent of winged morph at 24 h. These findings indicate that S. miscanthi could respond to the predation risk of the caged predator by either accelerating the developmental rate or reducing the net reproductive rate, while S. miscanthi might reduce their fitness in response to the predation risk of caged prey. Furthermore, S. miscanthi might also alter to winged morphs for dispersal under both of the above treatments. Aphids are the dominant pests in the complex of harmful fauna of stone fruits in Ukraine. In plum orchards mealy plum aphid Hyalopterus pruni Geoffr. (Hemiptera: Aphidinae) causes serious economic damage. Insect predators have an important role in the regulation of agricultural pests. Our goal was to determine the role of predation in the dynamics of the mealy-plum-aphid population. Investigations were carried out during the period of mass development of the mealy plum aphid in the experimental plum-orchard garden of the Institute of Horticulture of the National Academy of Agrarian Sciences of Ukraine. For this purpose, model trees were selected and isolators were installed on four branches of each tree with aphid-infested leaves. Different species of entomophagous predators were placed in the isolators and assessments were performed on a daily basis. According to our observations, Adalia bipunctata L., A. decempunctata L., Syrphus ribesii L., S. balteatus Deg, Chrysopa perla L., and Ch. carnea Steph. dominated among aphidophagous predators. Coccinella septempunctata L., Calvia quatuordecimguttata L., and Propylaea quatuordecimpunctata L. were less common. Syrphus and Chrysopa larvae had the highest predation activity. The influence of weather conditions on the efficiency of aphidophagous predators was analyzed. Optimal conditions for A. bipunctata, A. decempunctata, S. ribesii, S. balteatus, Ch. perla, and Ch. carnea during June–July were as follows: mean daily temperature, 17–20 °C, precipitation 0.1–1.5 mm, and relative air humidity 57–67%. The threshold ratios of dominant aphidophagous predators were determined. Simple Summary: Cotton aphid (Aphis gossypii Glover) (Homoptera: Aphididae) is a major pest of cotton and other cash crops across cotton-growing areas in China. The decision to spray insecticide or rely on biocontrol and delay spraying is often a dilemma in cotton-growing regions. In this study, we used a laboratory experiment and a caged experiment in a garden as well as modeling to understand the ratio of prey/predator for the abovementioned decision making. We suggested that the ratio of prey/predator should be less than 450 for the effective biocontrol of cotton aphid at cotton seedling stage. This finding can improve the efficiency of larger-scale cotton aphid management in China. The decision to delay or cancel spraying insecticides against pest aphids is dependent on the ratio of prey/predator, which reflects how well the predator can suppress the aphid population increase in the field. It is challenging to estimate the ratio of prey/predator due to the multiple factors involved in the interaction between prey and predator. Cotton aphid (Aphis gossypii Glover) is a serious pest, widely distributed in cotton-growing areas around the world. We combined different ratios of aphids with aphid oligophagous ladybird beetles (Coccinella septempunctata Linnaeus) under laboratory and garden conditions to investigate the critical threshold for prey/predator which effectively reduced the cotton aphid population increase. Two kinds of modeling were developed to understand the relationships between the ratio of prey/predator and the PGR (population growth rate), and with the effectiveness of biocontrol (EBC). We found the critical values of PGR should be less than −0.0806 (predators artificially released after 5 days) and then less than −0.075 (predators released after 10 days) if EBC is less than 50%. We recommend that the ratio of prey/predator should be less than 450 for the effective biocontrol of cotton aphids at the cotton seedling stage. Though predaceous ladybirds (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) are known to be attacked by a wide array of parasitoids, the biology of these parasitoids remains largely unknown. This study was focused on the gregarious parasitoid Homalotylus eyteweinii that attacks multiple taxa of predaceous ladybirds, to understand how females allocate brood and their offspring develop in relation to host stage at parasitism with the seven-spot ladybird Coccinella septempunctata as the host. The parasitoid spent the same length of time on ovipositor insertion in response to different host instars. All instars of the host were equally susceptible to parasitism. Parasitism success from oviposition to adult emergence was greater for the 2nd instar than for late instars while similar between the 2nd and 1st instars. Both egg-to-host mummification time and egg-to-adulthood time were longer for the 1st instar than for the late instars. Realised brood size was smaller for the 1st instar host than for the late instars, and there were no differences among the late instars. Sex ratio of realised brood was not significantly different among host instars and was female-biased. Body size of offspring male and female adults at emergence was not significantly different among host instars. Background: The cowpea aphid, Aphis craccivora Koch (Hemiptera: Aphididae), a plant lice known to commonly attack plants that causes loss by sucking sap from phloem and act as vector for viruses. The aphidophagous coccinellids are efficient in controlling the pestiferous population of aphids. The two coccinellid Coccinella septempunctata and Cheilomenes sexmaculata are efficient in predation of cowpea aphid, Aphis craccivora in southern Rajasthan. The present study determined the response of prey consumption at different prey densities. Methods: To compute the functional and numeric response of the lady bird beetle on cowpea aphid, experiment was conducted in vitro by using cowpea potted plant in caged conditions at Department of Entomology, Rajasthan College of Agriculture during 2019- 20. The cowpea pea plants were sown in small pots and were placed in aluminium insect cages having 15 cm 15 cm 15 cm size. The predatory potential of coccinellid grubs and adults were evaluated at six different prey densities (aphids per arena): 25, 50, 75, 100, 125, 150 and 200 with 5 replications. Result: The grub and adults of C. septempunctata consumed more prey as compared to C. sexmaculata. Both the coccinellid showed Type II functional response when functional curve was plotted. The linear regression method suggested that C. septempunctata required less time to act upon prey as compared to C. sexmaculata. The C. septempunctata also showed more numeric response in terms of ECI [conversion efficiency of prey consumption (ECI) into biomass (egg)] at different prey densities. The fecundity in both the cases increased with the increased prey densities that eventually decreased after reaching the maximum egg laying capacity at prey density of 125 aphids. The ladybeetle Coccinella septempunctata Linnaeus is an important natural enemy of aphids, scale insects, whitefly, and lepidopteran larvae. Mass rearing of this natural enemy is limited due to the lack of effective artificial feed. We compared the biological performance of C. septempunctata, reared on four artificial diets (A, B, C, and D), while the pea aphid Aphis craccivora served as a control treatment (CK). Results showed that the developmental time before emergence ranked from short to long follow as: CK (12.30d) C (87.50%) = D (87.50%) > B (80.00%) > A (57.50%), and new adult weight from high to low follow as: CK (339.50 g*0.0001) > A (205.33 g*0.0001) > D (197.68 g*0.0001) > B (174.89 g*0.0001) > C (169.46 g*0.0001). The ratios of fecundity between the experimental group and the control group were 80.46% (A), 39.24% (B), 45.31% (C), and 53.02% (D). The hatch rates were 59.50% (A), 46.00% (B), 57.65% (C), 54.50% (D), and 53.88% (CK). The mortality of C. septempunctata adults fed on a combined artificial diet was higher than those fed on the control diet. Compared to the control diet, C. septempunctata did not significantly reduce oviposition when fed on artificial diet A. Therefore, diet A can be used in mass‐rearing of C. septempunctata. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of water extracts of tarragon (Artemisia dracunculus L.) on the feeding intensity, mortality, and weight gain of selected pests, i.e., adult pea leaf weevils (Sitona lineatus L.), nymphs, wingless females of black bean aphids (Aphis fabae Scop.), and L2 and L4 larvae of Colorado potato beetle (Leptinotarsa decemlineata Say). In addition, the effect of the tarragon extracts on the voracity of the non-target organism Coccinella septempunctata L. L3 larvae was examined. To reduce S. lineatus feeding, at least 10% dry matter (DM) extract and 20% fresh matter (FM) should be used. Tarragon water extract has strong aphicidal potential against A. fabae, with 84% mortality of nymphs at 30% FM and 78% mortality of wingless females at 10% DM after 108 h of exposure. Aphid nymphs turned out to be more sensitive to the extracts prepared from fresh tarragon than from its dry matter. They were also more sensitive than wingless females. The body weight gain of L2 and L4 larvae of Colorado potato beetle was significantly reduced through the application of 10% and 5% extracts prepared from dry matters, respectively, while extracts prepared from fresh matter turned out to be ineffective. L2 larvae were more susceptible to extracts than L4 larvae, which suggests that they should be used as early as possible in the pest season. Methyl jasmonate (MEJA), a volatile organic compound, can induce plant defenses, thereby contributing to repelling insect pests and attracting their natural enemies. In 2013 and 2014, the influence of three exogenous MEJA doses (0.88, 1.76, and 3.55 mM) under field conditions was investigated on the abundance of the cotton pests Thrips tabaci Lindeman (Thysanoptera: Thripidae), Empoasca decipiens Paoli (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae), and Aphis gossypii Glover (Hemiptera: Aphididae), as well as of the predators Coccinella septempunctata L. (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae), Aeolothrips intermedius Bagnall (Thysanoptera: Aeolothripidae), and Chrysoperla carnea (Stephens) (Neuroptera: Chrysopidae). The MEJA treatments were performed at three cotton plant growth stages: 6–8 true leaves‐early squaring, square bud, and boll forming. The abundances of A. gossypii, T. tabaci, and E. decipiens varied considerably among strata and growing seasons and between experimental years, but overall they were lower on MEJA‐treated cotton plants than on control plants. The population density of A. intermedius and C. septempunctata did not differ between MEJA‐treated and control plants, whereas the intermediate MEJA concentration had an attractive but inconsistent effect on C. carnea. Most of the insect pests and predators showed a preference for specific plant strata. The abundance of T. tabaci was higher in earlier plant growth stages, whereas A. gossypii and E. decipiens were more abundant in later growth stages. Our results demonstrate the deterrent effects of MEJA‐induced cotton plants on sucking pests and suggest that MEJA could be exploited as a non‐toxic pest management tool.
