Background: Theobroma cacao, the cocoa tree, is a tropical crop grown for its highly valuable cocoa solids and fat which are the basis of a 200-billion-dollar annual chocolate industry. However, the long generation time and difficulties associated with breeding a tropical tree crop have limited the progress of breeders to develop high-yielding disease-resistant varieties. Development of marker-assisted breeding methods for cacao requires discovery of genomic regions and specific alleles of genes encoding important traits of interest. To accelerate gene discovery, we developed a gene atlas composed of a large dataset of replicated transcriptomes with the long-term goal of progressing breeding towards developing high-yielding elite varieties of cacao. Results: We describe the creation of the Cacao Transcriptome Atlas, its global characterization and define sets of genes co-regulated in highly organ- and temporally-specific manners. RNAs were extracted and transcriptomes sequenced from 123 different tissues and stages of development representing major organs and developmental stages of the cacao lifecycle. In addition, several experimental treatments and time courses were performed to measure gene expression in tissues responding to biotic and abiotic stressors. Samples were collected in replicates (3–5) to enable statistical analysis of gene expression levels for a total of 390 transcriptomes. To promote wide use of these data, all raw sequencing data, expression read mapping matrices, scripts, and other information used to create the resource are freely available online. We verified our atlas by analyzing the expression of genes with known functions and expression patterns in Arabidopsis (ACT7, LEA19, AGL16, TIP13, LHY, MYB2) and found their expression profiles to be generally similar between both species. We also successfully identified tissue-specific genes at two thresholds in many tissue types represented and a set of genes highly conserved across all tissues. Conclusion: The Cacao Gene Atlas consists of a gene expression browser with graphical user interface and open access to raw sequencing data files as well as the unnormalized and CPM normalized read count data mapped to several cacao genomes. The gene atlas is a publicly available resource to allow rapid mining of cacao gene expression profiles. We hope this resource will be used to help accelerate the discovery of important genes for key cacao traits such as disease resistance and contribute to the breeding of elite varieties to help farmers increase yields. European hazelnut (Corylus avellana L.) is an important tree nut crop. Hazelnut production in North America is currently limited in scalability due to Anisogramma anomala , a fungal pathogen that causes Eastern Filbert Blight (EFB) disease in hazelnut. Successful deployment of EFB resistant cultivars has been limited to the state of Oregon, where the breeding program at Oregon State University (OSU) has released cultivars with a dominant allele at a single resistance locus identified by classical breeding, linkage mapping, and molecular markers. C. avellana cultivar "Jefferson" is resistant to the predominant EFB biotype in Oregon and has been selected by the OSU breeding program as a model for hazelnut genetic and genomic research. Here, we present a near complete, haplotype-resolved chromosome-level hazelnut genome assembly for " Jefferson". This new assembly is a significant improvement over a previously published genome draft. Analysis of genomic regions linked to EFB resistance and self-incompatibility confirmed haplotype splitting and identified new gene candidates that are essential for downstream molecular marker development, thereby facilitating breeding efforts. Shade trees in agroforestry systems confer ecosystem services, such as enhanced soil fertility from diverse litter inputs, microclimate regulation via shade, and disease mitigation through trophic and abiotic interactions. With this thriving role of agroforestry in sustainable agriculture, particularly for tree crops, systematic and reliable methods to select shade trees for specific agroecosystem outcomes are crucial.Plant functional traits offer a framework to describe, select and manage shade trees. Over the last decade, shade tree leaf functional traits and whole plant traits have been assessed in agroforestry systems. Yet, we lack amalgamated information on (i) what we know about shade tree trait relationships with functions to achieve desired agroecosystem outcomes, (ii) how decades of shade tree selection by farmers impacts agroforests inter‐ and intraspecific trait diversity, and (iii) which shade tree traits should be considered for achieving farmer priorities.We consolidate literature on Coffea arabica (coffee) and Theobroma cacao (cocoa) agroforestry systems to summarize the role of shade tree functional traits in three key ecosystem functions: soil fertility, microclimate modification and crop productivity. We compile global and regional datasets on tree functional trait diversity to show the functional space of agroforestry tree species compared with the overall functional space observed in plants.Despite, or maybe because of, high shade tree diversity, shade tree trait characterization remains coarse and commonly measured at the community scale in the literature. Based on published trait data, we show that farmers adjust the functional composition of shade trees to increase the recycling of soil nutrients (high leaf nitrogen), the production of wood (skewing towards lower wood densities) and the production of fruits (tendency towards high seed size). Common shade trees in coffee and cocoa systems fall in the mid‐range of leaf acquisitive to conservative strategies, providing evidence that expanding shade tree portfolios can improve, or even accelerate, functions.Synthesis and applications: Based on the agroforestry literature and on trait‐environment relationships, we propose a matrix of shade tree traits that influence desirable agroecosystem outcomes for farmers, which can guide fine‐scale coordination of trait expression and agroforestry functions. Local climate change impacts hit hard at smallholder farmers in developing countries due to their overreliance on rain-fed farming. Whilst ecosystem-based adaptation (EbA) to climate change holds an answer to smallholder farmers' adaptation needs, there are inadequate empirical results from the field to support formulation of effective adaptation strategies. Hence, this paper aimed at investigating EbA practices adopted by farmers, in North-Western Ghana to ameliorate local climate change impacts, with emphasis on benefits and associated challenges. The study methods were cross-sectional survey, mixed methods, and case study approach, with all data collected in the Wa West District of Ghana. Data were gathered using questionnaire, focus group discussion (FGD) and interviews. Data from the questionnaire were entered into SPSS version 20 to analyze associations between the variables using cross-tabulation. Descriptive statistics, in the form of percentages and frequencies, were then generated from the survey data and integrated with the qualitative information in the presentation of results. Also, statistical significance of the relationships was analyzed using chi-square test. Chi-squared tests were done to determine associations between socio-economic and environmental factors, and challenges and benefits associated with the adoption of EbA practices. This was necessary to give further insights to inform policy-related decisions aimed at addressing EbA adoption challenges. The results revealed that farmers use a combination of practices rather than single practice. Farmers integrated crops and trees and keep local breed of farm animals. Benefits of EbA included improvements in soil fertility leading to high crop yield and availability of food and income. Challenges of adopting EbA were the long timespan for benefits of most EbA practices to begin to accrue, lack of extension information and increasing cost of hired labour. It is recommended that tree integration should emphasis trees with multiple benefits and compatible with food crops. For the achievement of food security policy objectives, agroforestry promotion should focus on the integration of fruit tree crops and food crops to address hunger and increase farmers' incomes. Mobile extension technology should be exploited by government for the provision of EbA-specific information to farmers to bridge the extension services gap. Climate change policy of government should include the planting of non-fruit trees as windbreaks to provide multi-purpose benefits including provision of stakes for yam farmers, live-fencing and firewood for women. Understanding the mechanisms by which wild bees survive in modified landscapes is important for their conservation and management as pollinators. Pollen is a critical resource for the completion of bee life cycles, so we investigated how the pollen loads carried by native bee communities change between natural forests and farms dominated by exotic crops and weeds in an agricultural region of south‐east Australia.We found that individual bees tended to carry higher proportions of exotic pollen on farms compared with forests (after accounting for whether they were captured on exotic or native flowers), and the diversity of pollen carried by bees did not differ significantly between native forest and farm sites or along native forest cover gradients. This suggests that the native bees found on farms, which are predominantly different species compared with those found in native forests, are not disadvantaged by the dominance of exotic plants in these habitats (though impacts on larval nutrition were not investigated).While some native bees carried crop pollen, others almost exclusively carried the pollen of agricultural weeds (e.g., Arctotheca and Brassica species), such that some native bee species may pollinate and benefit from crops, whereas others may only persist on farms if agricultural weeds are tolerated. Background and Aims The grass genus Urochloa (Brachiaria) sensu lato includes forage crops that are important for beef and dairy industries in tropical and sub-tropical Africa, South America and Oceania/Australia. Economically important species include U. brizantha , U. decumbens , U. humidicola , U. mutica , U. arrecta , U. trichopus , U. mosambicensis and Megathyrsus maximus , all native to the African continent. Perennial growth habits, large, fast growing palatable leaves, intra- and interspecific morphological variability, apomictic reproductive systems and frequent polyploidy are widely shared within the genus. The combination of these traits probably favoured the selection for forage domestication and weediness, but trait emergence across Urochloa cannot be modelled, as a robust phylogenetic assessment of the genus has not been conducted. We aim to produce a phylogeny for Urochloa that includes all important forage species, and identify their closest wild relatives (crop wild relatives). Finally, we will use our phylogeny and available trait data to infer the ancestral states of important forage traits across Urochloa s.l. and model the evolution of forage syndromes across the genus. Methods Using a target enrichment sequencing approach (Angiosperm 353), we inferred a species-level phylogeny for Urochloa s.l. , encompassing 54 species (~40 % of the genus) and outgroups. Phylogenies were inferred using a multispecies coalescent model and maximum likelihood method. We determined the phylogenetic placement of agriculturally important species and identified their closest wild relatives, or crop wild relatives, based on well-supported monophyly. Further, we mapped key traits associated with Urochloa forage crops to the species tree and estimated ancestral states for forage traits along branch lengths for continuous traits and at ancestral nodes in discrete traits. Key Results Agricultural species belong to five independent clades, including U. brizantha and U. decumbens lying in a previously defined species complex. Crop wild relatives were identified for these clades supporting previous sub-generic groupings in Urochloa based on morphology. Using ancestral trait estimation models, we find that five morphological traits that correlate with forage potential (perennial growth habits, culm height, leaf size, a winged rachis and large seeds) independently evolved in forage clades. Conclusions Urochloa s.l. is a highly diverse genus that contains numerous species with agricultural potential, including crop wild relatives that are currently underexploited. All forage species and their crop wild relatives naturally occur on the African continent and their conservation across their native distributions is essential. Genomic and phenotypic diversity in forage clade species and their wild relatives need to be better assessed both to develop conservation strategies and to exploit the diversity in the genus for improved sustainability in Urochloa cultivar production. Four new modes of action, oxathiapiprolin, fluopicolide, mandipropamid, and ethaboxam, have or are pending registrations on multiple tree crops in the USA including avocado, citrus, almond (and other tree nuts), and stone fruits to be used in sustainable anti-resistance rotation and mixture programs for managing Phytophthora diseases. All four fungicides are highly toxic in vitro against species of Phytophthora from different tree crops. Efficacy of foliar applications of oxathiapiprolin and mandipropamid for the management of citrus brown rot persisted for over 10 weeks. Still, residues could be removed to non-detectable levels by postharvest washing and brushing of fresh-market fruit. The four fungicides were highly effective in reducing root rot and crown/trunk cankers on tree crops and demonstrated acropetal systemic movement through the xylem after soil application and absorption by almond, citrus, and cherry roots. This was substantiated by reduced lesion size in stem inoculations of potted trees that were treated by soil applications or by in vitro bioassays and HPLC–MS–MS analyses of root, stem, and leaf extracts. Using an adapted Bromilow model that is based on the partition coefficient logP that indicates the lipo- or hydrophilicity and the acid dissociation constant pKa, mobility of ethaboxam, fluopicolide, mandipropamid, and oxathiapiprolin in plants was predicted, and this was supported by our studies. Mandipropamid and a mandipropamid–oxathiapiprolin pre-mixture are now registered as foliar applications for managing citrus brown rot, whereas oxathiapiprolin and fluopicolide are registered, and ethaboxam is pending registration as soil applications to control citrus root rot. Oxathiapiprolin has also been registered for soil use on almond and other nut crops, as well as avocado, and soil applications of mandipropamid are planned to be restricted to nursery use of multiple crops. The number of people suffering from scrub typhus, which is not of concern, is increasing year by year, especially in Yunnan Province, China. From June 1, 2021 to August 15, 2022, a total of 505 mammalian samples were collected from farm, forest, and residential habitats with high incidence of scrub typhus in Yunnan, China, for nPCR (nested PCR) and qPCR (quantitative real-time PCR) detection of Orientia tsutsugamushi. A total of 4 orders of murine-like animals, Rodentia (87.52%, n = 442), Insectivora (10.29%, n = 52), Lagomorpha (1.79%, n = 9) and Scandentia (0.40%, n = 2) were trapped. Comparing the qPCR infection rates in the three habitats, it was no significant difference that the infection rate of residential habitat (44.44%) and that of the farm habitat (45.05%, P>0.05), which is much larger than that of the forest habitat (3.08%) (P<0.001). Trunk injection of chemical compounds is a target-specific method of applying therapeutics that increases applied compound efficiency without compromising environmental safety and has proven to be an effective method to control citrus Huanglongbing (HLB). However, conventional (manual) trunk injection methods are labour-intensive and time-consuming, resulting in high application costs and posing implementation challenges for commercial citrus growers. For this reason, an automated, drill-free system for injecting therapeutic materials into citrus trees to control HLB has been developed. The injection mechanism consists of an end effector and a retractable telescoping positioning arm mountable to a farm vehicle. The system employs a metering pump with adjustable maximum pressure and flow rate for injecting therapeutic materials into tree trunks. This novel technology was evaluated in commercial citrus orchards; the applied volume, injection rate, and injection pressure were measured, and differences based on the time of injection, trunk diameter at the injection point, and irrigation status were examined. The injection was performed until the flow stopped; the injection duration ranged from 30 s to 72 s for all trees. The minimum and maximum volume injected was 53.9 mL and 243.6 mL, respectively, at 44 s and 68 s. The average injection rate per tree ranged from 1.23 mL s−1 to 3.58 mL s−1, and cut-off pressure ranged from 0.97 MPa to 2.01 MPa. • An automated drill-free mechanism for rapid trunk injection has been developed. • The device is mountable to farm vehicles to supply therapeutic materials to trees. • This novel technology was evaluated in commercial citrus orchards. • This is the first automated trunk injection system developed for tree crops. Trunk injection of chemicals is an alternative to conventional methods of applying plant protection products, and it can potentially deliver the exact dosage of therapeutic material required by the plant without undermining environmental protection and human health. Although trunk injection has proven to be an effective method for managing systemic pathogens, several studies have highlighted limitations for large-scale commercial tree crop applications because of the manual process involved, emphasising the need for an automated injection system. The process of trunk injection involves the steps of hole creation on the main stem of a tree and the injectate delivery of the therapeutic material. Injection mechanisms can be categorised based on the approach of creating an injection port, method of injectate delivery, and pressure source used to apply the injected material. This review article extensively investigates the development of various trunk injection mechanisms, operating principles, and practical applications, critically presenting advances in tree injections and highlighting gaps in knowledge to guide the development of automated injection systems. This review also discusses optimum injection parameters, such as hole size, above-ground injection height, number of injection ports, injection rate, and pressure. Additionally, it covers other factors such as tree variability, leaks and backflow, and the question of air exclusion during injection and wounding that may contribute to the design of an effective injection device. Summary: The precise functions of suberized apoplastic barriers in root water and nutrient transport physiology have not fully been elucidated. While lots of research has been performed with mutants of Arabidopsis, little to no data are available for mutants of agricultural crop or tree species.By employing a combined set of physiological, histochemical, analytical, and transport physiological methods as well as RNA‐sequencing, this study investigated the implications of remarkable CRISPR/Cas9‐induced suberization defects in young roots of the economically important gray poplar.While barely affecting overall plant development, contrary to literature‐based expectations significant root suberin reductions of up to 80–95% in four independent mutants were shown to not evidently affect the root hydraulic conductivity during non‐stress conditions. In addition, subliminal iron deficiency symptoms and increased translocation of a photosynthesis inhibitor as well as NaCl highlight the involvement of suberin in nutrient transport physiology.The multifaceted nature of the root hydraulic conductivity does not allow drawing simplified conclusions such as that the suberin amount must always be correlated with the water transport properties of roots. The seasonal distributions of predatory bugs, specifically species of Orius (Hemiptera: Anthocoridae), and the population dynamics of some sucking pests including aphids, leafhoppers, and thrips in crops plants (i.e. winter and summer vegetables, fruit trees and field crops) in Balcalı, Adana Province, Turkey, were investigated during 2019–2020. A total of four Orius species were identified, which are: Orius laevigatus (Fieber), Orius niger (Wolff), Orius albidipennis (Reuter) and Orius vicinus (Ribaut). The most common species was O. laevigatus, constituting 78.36% of the total adult individual insects. Both O. laevigatus and O. niger were relatively more abundant on broad beans, beans and potatoes compared to fruit trees and open field crops, such as cotton, sesame and soybean. Very few Orius individuals were recorded on fruit trees. Those that were recorded were found mostly on apple trees. Orius and thrips individuals were collected mainly from the flowers of the plants, and their population patterns depended on the flowering phenology patterns of the plants. Significant correlations were detected between the population patterns of Orius individuals and thrips populations in winter and summer vegetables, fruit trees and field crops. This may indicate that thrips are the primary prey of Orius individuals throughout the year in agricultural ecosystems with rich plant diversity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Assessing the effectiveness of vegetation restoration along the Yangtze River shoreline and exploring its relationship with land use changes are imperative for providing recommendations for sustainable management and environmental protection. However, the impact of vegetation restoration post-implementation of the Yangtze River Conservation Project remains uncertain. In this study, utilizing Sentinel-2 satellite imagery and Dynamic World land use data from pre- (2016) and post- (2022) Yangtze River Conservation Project periods, pixel-based binary models, transition matrices, and geographically weighted regression models were employed to analyze the status and evolution of vegetation coverage along the Yangtze River shoreline. The results indicated that there had been an increase in the area covered by high and high-medium vegetation levels. The proportion of vegetation cover shifting to better was 4201.87 km2 (35.68%). Hotspots of vegetation coverage improvement were predominantly located along the Yangtze River. Moreover, areas witnessing enhanced vegetation coverage experienced notable land use changes, notably the conversion of water to crops (126.93 km2, 22.79%), trees to crops (59.93 km2, 10.76%), and crops to built area (59.93 km2, 10.76%). Notably, the conversion between crops and built area emerged as a significant factor influencing vegetation coverage improvement, with average regression coefficients of 0.68 and 0.50, respectively. Seasonal hunger is the most common food insecurity experience for millions of small dryland farmers. This study tests the relationships between food insecurity, farm forests, and biomass poverty using a longitudinal dataset from the Amhara region of Ethiopia. These data form part of the Ethiopia Socioeconomic Survey, which collected panel data over three survey rounds from 530 households between 2011 and 2016. This dataset represents a collection of unique socioeconomic, wellbeing, and micro-land use measures, including farm forests. Hierarchical mixed effect regression models assessed the relationship between food insecurity and farm forests as well as the conditional effects of biomass poverty among the poorest farmers and women-headed households. Over a six-year study period, farmers reported increased stress from smaller land holdings, higher prices, and climate-related shocks. A clear trend towards spontaneous dispersed afforestation is observed by both researchers and satellite remote sensing. Model results indicate, dedicating approximately 10% of farm area to forest reduces months of food insecurity by half. The greatest reductions in food insecurity from farm forests are reported by ultra-poor and crop residue-burning households, suggesting that biomass poverty may be a major constraint to resilient food security on these farms. This research provides novel quantitative evidence of induced intensification and food security impacts of farm management preserving and building stores of biomass value as green assets. Cultivated pear consists of several Pyrus species with Pyrus communis (European pear) representing a large fraction of worldwide production. As a relatively recently domesticated crop and perennial tree, pear can benefit from genome-assisted breeding. Additionally, comparative genomics within Rosaceae promises greater understanding of evolution within this economically important family. Here, we generate a fully phased chromosome-scale genome assembly of P. communis 'd'Anjou.' Using PacBio HiFi and Dovetail Omni-C reads, the genome is resolved into the expected 17 chromosomes, with each haplotype totaling nearly 540 Megabases and a contig N50 of nearly 14 Mb. Both haplotypes are highly syntenic to each other and to the Malus domestica 'Honeycrisp' apple genome. Nearly 45,000 genes were annotated in each haplotype, over 90% of which have direct RNA-seq expression evidence. We detect signatures of the known whole-genome duplication shared between apple and pear, and we estimate 57% of d'Anjou genes are retained in duplicate derived from this event. Spraying on tree crops must consider the canopy's structural features to maximize its effectiveness. The main drawbacks to Variable Rate Irrigation (VRI) technology include the complexity of successfully implementing it and the lack of evidence that it assures better performance in net profit or water savings. Hence, a novel framework based on canopy characterization was presented in this research for an automatic variable-rate spraying system. The first phase was collecting the data, and the next was cleaning it to eliminate redundant information. The pre-treated data are then entered into the Crest- Stride-wise Regression Framework we devised, where we extract the canopy features and evaluate additional parameters. In addition, our proposed model automatically predicts the nozzle's flow rate and pressure based on a threshold value. Thus, this research shows that the recommended strategy achieves 99.98% accuracy, 99.99% precision, 99.99% F1 score, and 99.99% recall. Rubber (Hevea brasiliensis) is a priority tree crop that produces natural rubber (NR), making it an important plantation commodity in the Philippines. However, NR production is confronted with major constraints, including rubber diseases resulting in low latex yield. Twenty-five rubber farms located in five major rubber-producing municipalities (Kidapawan, Antipas, Makilala, Matalam and President Roxas) of Cotabato, Philippines, were surveyed for prevalence of major rubber leaf diseases. Information on farm practices and environmental variables was collected. The majority of rubber farmers were smallholders with hectarage planted ranging between 1 and 15 hectares. The most planted clones are RRIM 600 and PB 260, which are high-yielding yet susceptible to many foliar pathogens. Six leaf diseases, viz. Oidium powdery mildew, Colletotrichum leaf disease, Corynespora leaf fall/spot, Phytophthora leaf blight, bird's eye spot and algal spot, were documented in this study. Powdery mildew was the most prevalent in Cotabato with the highest percentage and severity of infections in all plantations, followed by Colletotrichum leaf disease. Avocado is an important tree crop grown in the tropics, including Ghana. Avocados are primarily propagated by seed into trees, which grow to provide shade for young cocoa trees and, subsequently, food and income. Cultivation of this crop as a monocrop is limited in Ghana; hence, there is a considerable risk of losing desirable genetic materials. There has been an effort by scientists at the University of Ghana to collect and curate available avocado germplasm to preserve, multiply, and disseminate to growers. Nurserymen have been tasked with germplasm multiplication through grafting. Unfortunately, the outcome of this grafting practice has been inefficient due to the high incidence of grafting failure. This study assessed the effects of the grafting experiences of four nurserymen under no shade, traditional, and adjusted shade conditions on the graft success of two avocado scions (Fuerte and Hass). The results of this study indicated that the absence of shade led to complete graft failure. Nevertheless, modifying the conventional shade to 70% using shade net resulted in a 10-20% enhancement in graft success. The success of grafting was found to be more associated with the skill of the grafters rather than their age or years of grafting experience. In general, the low graft success rate in avocados was most probably attributed to variations in the skills of individual grafters. Grafter A achieved a graft success rate of 23-29% higher than the other grafters, suggesting variations in the skill levels employed. Airborne hyperspectral imagery provides detailed spatial and spectral information that can be used for tree species classification, but its application in practical forest inventories over large areas is limited. This study investigates the impact of (i) bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) effects on multi-flightline airborne imagery and (ii) the selection strategy for training data on tree species classification accuracy over large forested areas. Hyperspectral imagery was acquired using the Chinese Academy of Forestry's LiDAR, CCD, and Hyperspectral system (CAF-LiCHy) over the Mengjiagang Forest Farm (MFF, ∼155 km2) in northeastern China, which includes common keystone coniferous species in northern China's temperate-boreal ecozones. A kernel-driven BRDF model based on mNDVI 704.50 stratification was applied to airborne hyperspectral data acquired from multi-flightlines. We developed three training data selection strategies, namely #1 sampling over the entire area, #2 localized sampling over the area for each flight date, and #3 gradually decreasing sampling in size. Additionally, two validation assessment strategies were respectively employed: independent data over the entire area and independent data in areas with inconsistent classification labeling between using BRDF corrected and uncorrected hyperspectral imagery. These strategies were implemented to perform a comprehensive cross-comparison of tree species classification accuracy using BRDF corrected and uncorrected airborne hyperspectral imagery. The study found that the representativeness of the training data (in terms of solar-viewing geometry distribution and size) has a stronger impact on the classification accuracy of tree species than the BRDF effects in airborne hyperspectral imagery. By utilizing BRDF corrected hyperspectral imagery with a majority of representative training data, the mean overall accuracy of tree species classification improves by ≤ 2.9 % compared to uncorrected imagery. Notably, BRDF correction has improved classification accuracy by 11.5 % in inconsistently labeled areas, mainly concentrated in the spatial overlap regions of adjacent flightlines. Optimal fruit production from many tree crops relies on the transfer of cross-pollen between trees of different cultivars rather than the transfer of self-pollen between trees of the same cultivar. However, many orchards are established with wide blocks of single cultivars, which can result in high percentages of self-fertilised fruit and sub-optimal yield and quality. We aimed to determine whether outcrossing rates and yield of Hass avocado fruit decline with increasing distance from polliniser trees of cultivar Shepard and whether selfed fruit are smaller than outcrossed fruit. Outcrossing rates declined from 49% at six trees (40 m) from a block of Shepard trees to 30% at thirty trees (160 m) from a block of Shepard trees. Tree yield across this distance declined by 44% as a result of a 69% decline in the number of outcrossed fruit per tree, without a significant decline in the number of selfed fruit per tree. Outcrossed Hass fruit were 12% heavier than selfed Hass fruit, with 3% greater diameter and 5% greater length. Chilli pepper is one of the most important and widely cultivated pepper types in China. It has high nutritional and economic value. Capsicum frutescens L. is one of the chilli pepper types in production. In October 2022, a new disease showing blight of the entire chilli pepper plant was observed in Nanchang City, Jiangxi Province. The fungal isolates consistently obtained from the diseased samples were identified as Diaporthe caryae C. M. Tian & Qin Yang based on morphological characteristics, pathogenicity test and phylogenetic analysis of four genes, including internal transcribed spacer region (rDNA‐ITS), translation elongation factor 1‐alpha gene (TEF1), beta‐tubulin gene (TUB2), and calmodulin (CAL). Although other Diaporthe species have been reported as pathogens of peppers previously, to our knowledge, this is the first report of D. caryae causing stem blight of pepper in the world. D. caryae was reported to be able to infect various fruit trees such as kiwifruit, peach, pear, and pecan, resulting in kiwifruit rot, peach constriction canker, pear shoot canker, and pecan dieback, respectively. Using agricultural gypsum promotes nutrient descent and generates a less aggressive environment for roots, favoring their development and better use of water and nutrients. However, studies on apple trees are scarce, and there is no official recommendation for gypsum application in the soils of southern Brazil. This work aimed to evaluate the potential use of agricultural gypsum to increase soil fertility and apple tree productivity. The research was carried out in the municipality of Ipê, RS, in an apple orchard cv. Condessa planted fifteen years ago and with acidity in the soil layer of 20-40 cm. The design of the experiment was consisted of randomized blocks, containing five treatments and four replications, with 80 m² each. The treatments consisted of five doses of agricultural gypsum, applied at the beginning of the productive cycle. The study evaluated soil chemical parameters at 0-20 cm and 20-40 cm, chlorophyll content, and crop productivity. The results showed an increase in the sulfur content up to the gypsum dose of 6.0 t⋅ha-1 and a reduction in the magnesium content in the soil at both evaluated depths. Agricultural gypsum application did not significantly influence the other chemical parameters evaluated. Chlorophyll content in apple leaves was reduced, and there was an increase in productivity with the increase in the dose of agricultural gypsum. The aim of this study is to discuss how an effective governance process should be established for Atatürk Forest Farm's (AFF) urban policies, spatial planning, and the implementation thereof. The first stage of the process is to discuss complex systems and governance concepts in spatial planning. In the second stage, the transformation process of AFF between 1925 and 2022 was analyzed in three different periods through considering existing literature and the archival research of various institutions in terms of key historical, spatial, legal, and administrative matters. In each period, a number of practices were examined, namely: transfer/sale legislation related to the area; practices, such as leasing activities, zoning plans, and planning changes regarding the disposal of land; decisions related to protected areas and urban transformation; spatial interventions made regarding renewal areas; and actors contributing to these interventions and the transformations experienced. In the third and final stage, solutions are proposed for how a decision process approach should be developed for the effective governance in the spatial development and transformation of AFF. We focus on pre-Columbian agricultural regimes in the Maya Lowlands, using new datasets of archaeological wood charcoal, seeds, phytoliths, and starch grains; biological properties of plants; and contemporary Indigenous practices. We address inherited models of agriculture in the lowlands: the limitations of the environment (finding more affordances than anticipated by earlier models); the homogeneity of agricultural strategies (finding more heterogeneity of strategies across the lowlands than a single rigid template); the centrality of maize in agriculture (finding more reliance on root crops and tree crops than historically documented); the focus on the milpa system as food base (finding more agroforestry, homegardening, horticulture, and wild resource management than previously documented); the dominance of swidden strategies in agricultural practices (finding more diverse practices than accounted for in most models); and the foregrounding of maize crop failure in collapse models (finding more evidence of resilience and sustainable agricultural practices than predicted). Despite multiple studies of the impact of climate change on temperate tree species, experiments on tropical and economically important tree crops, such as cacao (Theobroma cacao L.), are still limited. Here, we investigated the combined effects of increased temperature and atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration ([CO2]) on the growth, photosynthesis and development of juvenile plants of two contrasting cacao genotypes: SCA 6 and PA 107. The factorial growth chamber experiment combined two [CO2] treatments (410 and 700 p.p.m.) and three day/night temperature regimes (control: 31/22 °C, control + 2.5 °C: 33.5/24.5 °C and control + 5.0 °C: 36/27 °C) at a constant vapour pressure deficit (VPD) of 0.9 kPa. At elevated [CO2], the final dry weight and the total and individual leaf areas increased in both genotypes, while the duration for individual leaf expansion declined in PA 107. For both genotypes, elevated [CO2] also improved light-saturated net photosynthesis (P n) and intrinsic water-use efficiency (i WUE), whereas leaf transpiration (E) and stomatal conductance (g s) decreased. Under a constant low VPD, increasing temperatures above 31/22 °C enhanced the rates of P n, E and g s in both genotypes, suggesting that photosynthesis responds positively to higher temperatures than previously reported for cacao. However, dry weight and the total and individual leaf areas declined with increases in temperature, which was more evident in SCA 6 than PA 107, suggesting the latter genotype was more tolerant to elevated temperature. Our results suggest that the combined effect of elevated [CO2] and temperature is likely to improve the early growth of high temperature-tolerant genotypes, while elevated [CO2] appeared to ameliorate the negative effects of increased temperatures on growth parameters of more sensitive material. Canopy height data from the Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI) mission has powered the development of global forest height products, but these data and products have not been validated in non-forest tree plantation settings. In this study, we collected field observations of the canopy heights throughout oil palm plantations in Nigeria and evaluated the performance of existing global canopy height map (CHM) products as well as a local model trained on the GEDI and various Landsat and Sentinel-2 feature combinations. We found that existing CHMs fared poorly in the region, with mean absolute errors (MAE) of 4.2–6.2 m. However, the locally trained models performed well (MAE = 2.5 m), indicating that using the GEDI and optical satellite data can still be effective, even in a region with relatively sparse GEDI coverage. In addition to improved overall performance, the local model was especially effective at reducing errors for short (<5 m) trees, where the global products struggle to capture the canopy height. Phytophthora species, classified under Oomycota, cause significant damage to various crops and trees. The present study introduced Phytophthora species, P. nagaii and P. tentaculata, new to Korea, which pose notable risks to their respective host plants. Our research provided a comprehensive description of these species taking into account their cultural features, morphological characteristics, and molecular phylogenetic analysis using the internal transcribed spacer rDNA region and cytochrome c oxidase subunit mtDNA genes (cox1 and cox2) sequences. In addition, this study first evaluated the sensitivity of P. nagaii and P. tentaculata to five anti-oomycete fungicides, finding both species most responsive to picarbutrazox and P. tentaculata resistant to fluazinam. The data can guide targeted treatment strategies and offer insights into effective control methods. We describe changes in the cropland distribution for physiographic and bioregions of continental Ecuador between 2000 and 2016 using Landsat satellite data and government statistics. The cloudy conditions in Ecuador are a major constraint to satellite data analysis. We developed a two-stage cloud filtering algorithm to create cloud-free multi-temporal Landsat composites that were used in a Random Forest model to identify cropland. The overall accuracy of the model was 78% for the Coast region, 86% for the Andes, and 98% for the Amazon region. Cropland density was highest in the coastal lowlands and in the Andes between 2500 and 4400 m. During this period, cropland expansion was most pronounced in the Páramo, Chocó Tropical Rainforests, and Western Montane bioregions. There was no cropland expansion detected in the Eastern Foothill forests bioregion. The satellite data analysis further showed a small contraction of cropland (4%) in the Coast physiographic region, and cropland expansion in the Andes region (15%), especially above 3500m, and in the Amazon region (57%) between 2000 and 2016. The government data showed a similar contraction for the Coast (7%) but, in contrast with the satellite data, they showed a large agricultural contraction in the Andes (39%) and Amazon (50%). While the satellite data may be better at estimating relative change (trends), the government data may provide more accurate absolute numbers in some regions, especially the Amazon because separating pasture and tree crops from forest with satellite data is challenging. Tragocephala nobilis (Fabricius) (Coleoptera:Cerambycidae), an insect pest (herbivorous insect), was recently found on a multipurpose tropical tree species, Tetrapleura tetraptera (Schum and Thonn.) Taub, in Ghana. Although the pest has been previously reported on other tree crops such as cocoa and Coffea arabica, this is the first report on T. tetraptera. T. tetraptera is a deciduous tree crop with numerous nutritional and medicinal benefits. The pest, a long‐horned beetle is found to attack T. tetraptera tree and damage is first observed as die‐back of twigs and branches leading to the formation of a witches broom in the crown. This is followed by a series of tunnels created by the larvae on the main stem resulting in branch death and/or tree mortality. In view of the threat posed by the pest to T. tetraptera, a broader study is needed urgently to develop an integrated pest management strategy for T. nobilis pest in T. tetraptera plantations as the interest in its domestication as a tree crop is burgeoning in response to increasing herbal medicine and food supplements demand. Recent economic, environmental, and regulative concerns force farmers to precise their fertilization practices. Yet, a critical knowledge gap concerning the temporal variability in perennials' nutritional requirements renders most fertilization applications inefficient. While mass balance studies could illustrate the dynamics of crops' mineral uptake, their association to field conditions remains a challenge. Hence, we constructed an empirical framework to convert data from lysimeter studies to applicable farming information. We fitted quadratic equations to the correlations between irrigation and drainage mineral concentrations of three perennial crops—almond, avocado, and pomegranate. Then, we derived the optimal irrigation mineral composition by the interpolation point of the nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium curves. We also matched polynomials to the relations between leaf mineral concentrations and fertilization compositions and established mineral diagnostic references for each sampling period. Repeated measures of the crops' response curves illustrated a temporal variability in their nutrient uptake, highlighting that the evergreen avocado extracts nutrients throughout winter, early blooming almond extracts nutrients in spring, and late fruiting pomegranates obtain minerals throughout summer. Moreover, the deciduous almond and pomegranate require extensive summer fertilization for the following spring's bloom. Recurrent leaf diagnosis exhibited that almond leave's optimal nitrogen concentrations drop by midsummer. Optimal phosphorus concentrations in avocado and pomegranates doubled during summer, as did the optimal potassium concentration in pomegranates' leaves. Accordingly, we established an empirical approach to process data from lysimeter studies and constructed specific fertigation assays for almond, avocado, and pomegranate trees. To explore the ecological stoichiometric characteristics of C, N and P in leaves of Fraxinus mandshurica from different provenances, and to provide scientific basis for the selection and cultivation of excellent sources of Fraxinus mandshurica, four excellent provenances (Dongfanghong, Tangwanghe, Huinan and Maoershan (compare)) of Fraxinus mandshurica from Maoershan Experimental Forest Farm of Northeast Forestry University were selected as research objects. The seasonal dynamics of C, N and P contents of Fraxinus mandshurica from different provenances, and the allometry relationship of C, N and P contents were analyzed. The results showed that the N and P content of Fraxinus mandshurica leaves gradually decreased during the growing season, the C/N and C/P gradually increased. The N/P increased first and then decreased. There were significant differences in the content of N, P, C/N and C/P in leaves of different provenances at the early growth stage and the flourishing stage. The content of C and N/P were not significantly different in the growing season. The C, N and P contents in the leaves of Fraxinus mandshurica from four provenances had a significant allometric growth relationship. The allometric growth constant of Dongfanghong provenance was significantly different from other provenances. It was forming its own nutrient balance and utilization strategy. The N content of Huinan provenances was higher than that of other provenances, and the C/N and N/P were lower than that of other provenances. It had higher nutrient utilization efficiency. During cultivation process, the nitrogen fertilizer should be applied at the early growth stage of Fraxinus mandshurica and phosphate fertilizer should be applied at the flourishing stage to improve the nutrient utilization efficiency and promote its rapid growth. Rodent-borne diseases such as bubonic plague remain a significant threat to public health in tropical countries. In plague-endemic areas, little information exists on the factors triggering periodic bursts, thus rendering preparedness strategies for preventing the negative impacts of the deadly zoonosis difficult. In this study, we assessed how species richness, diversity, and community structure of rodents are associated with plague persistence in Mbulu District, Tanzania. Rodent data were collected using the removal trapping technique. We captured 610 rodents belonging to 12 species, with Mastomys natalensis recording highest abundance. There was significantly higher abundance and species richness in persistent than non-persistent plague locality. Also, house premises recorded significantly lower species richness than farm and forest habitats. Additionally, we found three broad rodent community structures that varied significantly between studied habitat types suggesting high rodent populations interaction at fine-scale resource abundance. The high abundance and diversity of plague-susceptible rodent reservoirs suggestively contribute to the plague persistence in the foci. Breeding perennial tree crops often requires prediction of mature performance from juvenile data. To assess the utility of juvenile screens to predict salinity tolerance of mature pistachio trees, we compared performance of 3-month ungrafted seedlings and 4-year-old grafted rootstocks under salinity stress. The QTL allele associated with higher salt exclusion from seedling leaves conferred lower growth in saline field conditions, suggesting that mapping QTL in seedlings may be easier than discerning the optimal allele for field performance. Trees alter microclimate and radiation budget in alley cropping systems, which in turn change physiological processes of the grassland component. The influence of the trees on grassland growth depends on the climate zone as well as possibly on weather conditions during the respective growth interval. The proportion of shade‐tolerant species in the grassland further modifies the tree effect on grassland growth, as well as the number of annual harvests. We studied the effect of distance and orientation relative to the tree line (tree line in the South‐West vs. North‐East) on growth rates of the adjacent grassland with two cutting frequencies (frequent vs. infrequent) in an alley cropping system with grassland of two different vegetation compositions (diverse vs. grass‐clover) and willow clones. Microclimate parameters and radiation were measured at the points where growth rates were determined to better characterize the effect of position relative to the tree line. Growth rates differed significantly (p < 0.05) depending on the distance to the trees and annual biomass accumulation amounted to 389 ± 13.5 g m−2 in the center vs. 321 ± 10.0 g m−2 with trees in the North‐East vs. 292 ± 9.2 g m−2 with trees in the South‐West of the transect position. Lower growth rates occurred at positions with lower light quantities close to the trees, namely the position with the trees adjacent in the South‐West. Temperature and relative humidity differences between the distances were significantly (p < 0.05) affected by distance to the tree line, but differences in neither soil nor air temperatures between the distances affected growth rates. Vegetation composition mediates the influence of the trees: the difference between positions was more pronounced in the diverse vegetation composition with higher productivities in the center between the alleys, but also with higher overall sward productivity. The differential stomatal regulation of transpiration among plant species in response to water deficit is not fully understood, although several hydraulic traits have been reported to influence it. This knowledge gap is partly due to a lack of direct and concomitant experimental data on transpiration, stomatal conductance, and hydraulic traits. We measured sap flux density (J s), stomatal conductance (g s), and different hydraulic traits in five crop species. Our aim was to contribute to establishing the causal relationship between water consumption and its regulation using a hydraulic trait-based approach. The results showed that the species-specific regulation of J s by g s was overall coordinated with the functional hydraulic traits analysed. Particularly relevant was the negative and significant relationship found between the Huber value (H v) and its functional analogue ratio between maximum J s and g s (J smax/ g smax) which can be understood as a compensation to maintain the hydraulic supply to the leaves. The H v was also significantly related to the slope of the relationship between g s and J s response to vapour pressure deficit and explained most of its variability, adding up to evidence recognizing H v as a major trait in plant water relations. New spraying systems embedded with different technologies have been developed for pesticide application in 3D crops. However, while applied to specific tree crops, the potential spray drift mitigation for advanced spraying systems needs to be classified due to the great variability of spray equipment and canopy structure. Here a precision spraying system was developed and compared with two typical spraying systems (conventional system, optimized system following the best management practices) for the applied volume/pesticide and spray drift in an apple orchard at two growth stages following the ISO22866-2005 protocol. Compared to the conventional system, the other two advanced systems significantly reduced the amount of ground drift (> 60%) at most of the sampling distances at the growth stage BBCH 72, while the precision system demonstrated the best drift mitigation (57.3% reduction) at the stage BBCH 99. For the airborne drift, a remarkable drift reduction was also achieved with the two advanced systems. Specifically, the optimized spraying system exhibited a drift reduction by approximately 80% at the first growth stage, and the precision application demonstrated its considerable advantages in minimizing drift loss for the sparse canopy at the stage BBCH 99. Moreover, the saving of applied volume/pesticide was achieved by 12% with the optimized system and 43% with the precision system. This study revealed the necessity and prospect of the advanced spraying systems to reduce the environmental contamination and health risk from pesticide applications in fruit tree production. Macadamia (Macadamia integrifolia and M. tetraphylla and their hybrids) is a tree nut crop affected by Botryosphaeria branch dieback. The disease results in branch and tree death in commercial orchards, so reducing the productivity of the Australian macadamia industry. There is a dearth of knowledge of the disease cycle in macadamia, which confounds disease management. This study investigated the dynamics of pathogen inoculum associated with Botryosphaeria branch dieback and the influence of environmental factors (temperature, rainfall and relative humidity) on the seasonal spore release within the orchards. Diseased and asymptomatic plant parts from macadamia trees were collected each season for 3 years in commercial orchards. Fungal structures (pycnidia and pseudothecia) mainly were (71%) observed on symptomatic wood samples. A comparison of the number of spores released from the fungal structures between summer and autumn revealed high concentrations of Lasiodiplodia pseudotheobromae from diseased wood (4.8 × 104 conidia/cm2) and Neofusicoccum luteum from blighted leaves (2.1 × 103 conidia/cm2). The peak airborne conidia dispersal period, quantified using microscopy and quantitative PCR assays, was consistently detected after rainfall and strongly associated with relative humidity over 70% and temperatures between 20 and 27°C during summer and autumn. Botryosphaeriaceae isolates obtained from the pycnidia on the macadamia trees caused severe branch dieback symptoms when inoculated on detached macadamia twigs, which suggests both airborne and rain‐splashed spores from fungal structures on the trees contribute to the disease in macadamia orchards. Despite the increased use of cover crops (CCs) in grain and vegetable agroecosystems, CC effects on soil nutrient availability, fruit yield, and the soil microbiome in fruit orchard agroecosystems have been less explored. To address these issues, we planted two CC-mixtures (legumes and non-legumes and non-legumes only) in the inter-row middles of two commercial Florida citrus orchards (COA and COB) for three years. Traditional weedy row middles under grower standard management were used as a control (GSC). In COA, planting either CC mixture for three years significantly increased soil organic matter content and ammonium compared to the GSC and were related to increased bacteria, archaea, and nitrogen-cycling gene abundances. Planting CCs significantly increased alpha diversity, altered bacterial and fungal community composition, and increased the relative abundance of potentially beneficial bacterial taxa in COA. The use of CCs also increased bacterial and fungal network complexity and increased specific predicted bacterial functions and fungal guilds in COA after three years compared to the GSC. However, limited CC impacts on soil properties and microbial communities were observed in COB, likely due to lower CC establishment compared to COA. During the three years, CCs had no significant impact on fruit yield in both citrus orchards compared to the GSC. Overall, our results illustrate that although CCs promote changes in soil nutrient cycling and the soil microbiome in Florida citrus orchards, these changes can be site-specific and differ between fruit orchards under the same management and soil type. In grafted apple, rootstock-derived signals influence scion cold tolerance by initiating physiological changes to survive over the winter. To understand the underlying molecular interactions between scion and rootstock responsive to cold, we developed transcriptomics and metabolomics data in the stems of two scion/rootstock combinations, 'Gala'/'G202' (cold resistant rootstock) and 'Gala'/'M9' (cold susceptible rootstock). Outer layers of scion and rootstock stem, including vascular tissues, were collected from the field-grown grafted apple during the winter. The clustering of differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and gene ontology enrichment indicated distinct expression dynamics in the two graft combinations, which supports the dependency of scion cold tolerance on the rootstock genotypes. We identified 544 potentially mobile mRNAs of DEGs showing highly-correlated seasonal dynamics between scion and rootstock. The mobility of a subset of 544 mRNAs was validated by translocated genome-wide variants and the measurements of selected RNA mobility in tobacco and Arabidopsis. We detected orthologous genes of potentially mobile mRNAs in Arabidopsis thaliana, which belong to cold regulatory networks with RNA mobility. Together, our study provides a comprehensive insight into gene interactions and signal exchange between scion and rootstock responsive to cold. Background: Despite recent reductions in Vietnam, malaria transmission persists in some areas in forests and farmlands where a high density of Anopheles mosquitoes relative to other environments occurs. To inform effective malaria control measures, it is important to understand vector bionomics and the malaria transmission role of Anopheles spp. in the highland regions of Vietnam. This study was conducted to quantify the abundance, composition and biting behaviour of the Anopheles mosquito population, and the proportion of Plasmodium spp. infected mosquitoes collected from forest and agricultural farm sites in Gia Lai province, Vietnam. Methods: Forest and agricultural farm sites in Gia Lai province were selected for mosquito collections (total eight sites). Mosquito collection was performed by Human-baited Double Net Trap (HDNT), animal-baited traps (ABT) using cattle, and CDC light traps. Captured mosquitoes were identified morphologically, and salivary glands of Anopheles mosquitoes were examined for sporozoites using microscopy. Plasmodium infection was determined by Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), and identification of blood meal type was determined by PCR and diffuse serum agglutination assay. Results: A total of 1815 Anopheles mosquitoes belonging to 19 species were collected by ABT (n = 1169), HDNT (n = 471) and CDC light trap (n = 175). Anopheles abundance and diversity varied by district and environment. Capture by HDNT of Anopheles of vectorial concern was observed between early evening and early morning. Plasmodium vivax infection was determined by PCR in two Anopheles dirus specimens captured by HDNT in forest sites. Blood from a range of hosts could, including human blood, could be detected in species considered primary and secondary vectors An. dirus, and Anopheles aconitus, and Anopheles maculatus, respectively. Conclusions: A low number of Anopheles spp. considered primary vectors of concern and very low numbers of Plasmodium spp. infected Anopheles mosquitoes were captured at the end of the rainy season in the Central Highlands of Vietnam. However, capture species of vectorial concern by HDNT throughout the early to late evening demonstrates that use of additional personal protective measures could supplement current preventative measures, such as bed nets to prevent exposure to vectors of concern in this region. Agricultural land abandonment (ALA) is becoming a growing phenomenon around the world that needs to be monitored and quantified. A massive abandonment of citrus orchards has been experienced in the last years in the Comunitat Valenciana (CV) region (Spain) driven by different socio-economic factors. Therefore, developing time and cost-efficient methods for monitoring ALA is a priority. Citrus are a perennial crop trees which make orchards have low spectral variation during the year. In the CV region, they are planted in relatively small parcels, thus creating a highly fragmented and heterogeneous landscape. This study proposes a machine learning-based classification framework that uses annual time series of spectral indices extracted from Sentinel-2 images to identify crop status at parcel level. The method is based on features extracted from the reconstructed OSAVI and NDMI time series used to train a Random Forest classifier. Then, a parcel-based classification is performed using the parcel boundaries and the probabilities of belonging to each category for the full pixels inside the boundaries. The research assessed the potential to identify three statuses of crops (non-productive, productive, and abandoned). Results on three different temporal and spatial datasets provided an overall accuracy ranging from 89 to 92 %, demonstrating the importance of multi-temporal data to identify the abandonment of perennial crops. Furthermore, we studied the ability of the model to be spatially and temporally transferred. Androgenesis is reported in a few tree crops such as citrus and papaya; however, there is little information available about guava. Different modified Chu (N6) media and cold pretreatments of floral buds were tested to induce embryogenic calli in the anthers of two white flesh guava cultivars, 'Round' and 'Pyriform'. Four modified Chu (N6) media formulations, i.e., M1 (400 mgL-1 casein hydrolysate, 200 mgL-1 glutamine, 0.2 mgL-1NAA, 1.0 mgL-1 KIN, 0.5 mgL-1 6-BAP, 0.5 mgL-1 zeatin and 5% coconut water), M2 (400 mgL-1 casein hydrolysate, 200 mgL-1 glutamine, 0.2 mgL-1NAA, 1.0 mgL-1 KIN, 0.5 mgL-1 6-BAP), M10 (0.5 mgL-1 2,4-D), and M11 (0.5 mgL-1 2,4-D and 50 mgL-1 PVP) enhanced anther swelling and callus formation. Genotypic variability was found in pollen viability, phenolic exudation, and anther tissue browning after cold pretreatment for 0-72 hrs. intervals. Anthers of 'Round' showed more pollen viability across cold pretreatment intervals with less phenolic exudations and tissue browning than 'Pyriform'. On both M10 and M11 media, anthers with uni-nucleate microspores developed embryogenic calli; however, anthers of 'Pyriform' resulted in more calli induction (69.58%) on M10 media, whereas anthers of 'Round' developed more calli (66.60%) on M11 media. The proliferating calli in white flesh 'Round' and 'Pyriform' cultivars and pink flesh 'Round' cultivar formed more embryogenic masses upon transfer to growth hormone-free Chu (N6) media under light conditions; however, embryos showed delayed maturity with limited germination. More genotypes shall be explored to enhance embryo germination, and embryogenic media shall be further fine-tuned. In this article I argue that generating carbon credit value centres on a double movement of first naming something as waste and then removing it, a movement entangled with imagined pasts and futures. I explore this through the transformations that TAMS, a project to restore fallows from slash-and-burn agriculture in Madagascar's rainforest, underwent through its engagement with carbon markets. TAMS initially aimed to benefit both forest and local farming communities. Its objective was then shifted to using the forest for carbon credits. I argue that the 'calculative logic' of carbon offset production drove this move by first identifying the fallows as waste and then removing them; other forms of understanding and using these fallows were systematically 'unknown': debased and forgotten. Reformulating the fallows as waste excluded local farmers from their livelihood. The promise of carbon value was never realised, but the effects of its anticipation were wasted present livelihoods. About 75% of people today still rely on conventional medical techniques for the treatment of a wide range of illnesses. Plants ability to serve as medicinal agents is dependent on their phytochemicals. There hasn't been enough research and study done on the pharmacological and therapeutic potential of tree species like C. equisetifolia. El Gigante rockshelter in western Honduras provides a deeply stratified archaeological record of human–environment interaction spanning the entirety of the Holocene. Botanical materials are remarkably well preserved and include important tree (e.g., ciruela (Spondias), avocado (Persea americana)) and field (maize (Zea mays), beans (Phaseolus), and squash (Cucurbita)) crops. Here we provide a major update to the chronology of tree and field crop use evident in the sequence. We report 375 radiocarbon dates, a majority of which are for short-lived botanical macrofossils (e.g., maize cobs, avocado seeds, or rinds). Radiocarbon dates were used in combination with stratigraphic details to establish a Bayesian chronology for ~9,800 identified botanical samples spanning the last 11,000 years. We estimate that at least 16 discrete intervals of use occurred during this time, separated by gaps of ~100–2,000 years. The longest hiatus in rockshelter occupation was between ~6,400 and 4,400 years ago and the deposition of botanical remains peaked at ~2,000 calendar years before present (cal BP). Tree fruits and squash appeared early in the occupational sequence (~11,000 cal BP) with most other field crops appearing later in time (e.g., maize at ~4,400 cal BP; beans at ~2,200 cal BP). The early focus on tree fruits and squash is consistent with early coevolutionary partnering with humans as seed dispersers in the wake of megafaunal extinction in Mesoamerica. Tree crops predominated through much of the Holocene, and there was an overall shift to field crops after 4,000 cal BP that was largely driven by increased reliance on maize farming.
