Background: Zinc deficiency poses significant health risks, particularly in low-income settings. This study aims to evaluate the impact of agronomically zinc biofortified (fermented and non-fermented) and post-harvest wheat flour flatbread on zinc status and metabolic health in adolescents and adult women in rural Pakistan. Methods: A four-arm triple-blind randomized controlled trial will be conducted in a rural district of Pakistan. Participants (adolescents aged 10–19 and adult women aged 20–40) will be assigned to receive fermented or unfermented high zinc agronomically biofortified wheat flour flatbread, post-harvest zinc-fortified wheat flour flatbread, or low zinc conventional whole wheat flour flatbread. The meal would be served once a day, six days a week for six months. The study aims to enroll 1000 participants and will be analyzed based on the intention-to-treat principle. The trial is registered with number NCT06092515. Outcomes: Primary outcomes will include serum zinc concentration and metabolic markers, while secondary outcomes include anthropometric measurements, blood pressure, and dietary intake. Conclusion: This trial will provide valuable insights into the efficacy of agronomically zinc biofortified wheat flour in improving zinc status and metabolic health. This article presents the development of a distance-based thread analytical device (dTAD) integrated with an ion-imprinted polymer (IIP) for quantitative monitoring of zinc ions (Zn2+) in human urine samples. The IIP was easily chemically modified onto the thread channel using dithizone (DTZ) as a ligand to bind to Zn2+ with methacrylic acid (MAA) as a functional monomer and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) as well as 2,2-azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) as cross-linking agents to enhance the selectivity for Zn2+ detection. The imprinted polymer was characterized using Attenuated Total Reflectance-Fourier Transform Infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy and Scanning Electron Microscopy-Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (SEM-EDS). Under optimization, the linear detection range was from 1.0 to 20.0 mg L-1 (R2 = 0.9992) with a limit of detection (LOD) of 1.0 mg L-1. Other potentially interfering metal ions and molecules did not interfere with this approach, leading to high selectivity. Furthermore, our technique exhibits a remarkable recovery ranging from 100.48% to 103.16%, with the highest relative standard deviation (% RSD) of 5.44% for monitoring Zn2+ in human control urine samples, indicating high accuracy and precision. Similarly, there is no significant statistical difference between the results obtained using our method and standards on zinc supplement sample labels. The proposed method offers several advantages in detecting trace Zn2+ for point-of-care (POC) medical diagnostics and environmental sample analysis, such as ease of use, instrument-free readout, and cost efficiency. Context: Collecting, cooling, and cryopreserving semen is essential for accessing genetically superior stallions. However, preserving stallion sperm presents unique challenges compared with other species. Aims: This study aimed to investigate the effect of zinc (Zn) supplementation on the quality of equine sperm during cold storage. Methods: Various factors contributing to sperm quality were assessed at 24 and 48 h after cooling, and after subjecting the sperm samples to a heat-resistance test. In Experiment 1, four experimental groups were examined, each with different concentrations of Zn sulfate, as follows: 0, 1, 2, and 3 mM. Subsequently, Experiment 2 involved testing a wider range of concentrations (0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.4, 0.8, 1.6, and 3.2 mM), including evaluation of samples after incubation for 240 min at 37°C (heat-resistance test). Key results: The addition of different concentrations of Zn to the extender INRA96 did not yield substantial improvements in sperm-quality parameters for cooling stallion semen after 24 or 48 h. Moreover, no protective benefits were observed when samples underwent a heat-resistance test. Concentrations of Zn surpassing 3 mM had an adverse effect on sperm-quality parameters. Conclusions and implications: These findings have contributed to the understanding of Zn supplementation as a strategy for improving semen preservation in stallions. This study explores the impact of zinc supplementation to improve the quality of cooled equine semen, addressing a crucial aspect of genetic preservation in horses. The findings showed that adding various concentrations of zinc to the sperm does not significantly enhance sperm quality during cold storage and concentrations exceeding 3 mM had detrimental effects. Previous studies have revealed that an antioxidant diet is a protective factor against migraine. However, the association between zinc, an important antioxidant obtained from the diet, and migraine has received little attention. The purpose of this study was to explore the association between zinc intake with migraine. The present study used cross-sectional data from individuals who participated in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) between 1999 and 2004. Logistic regression models and restricted cubic spline models were performed to explore the association between zinc intake and migraine. A total of 9849 adults aged 20 years or older were included in this study. Zinc intake was negatively associated with migraine. Compared to participants in the lowest group of dietary zinc intake Q1 (≤5.93 mg/day), the adjusted ORs for migraine in Q2 (5.94–8.38 mg/day), Q3 (8.39–11.26 mg/day), Q4 (11.27–15.75 mg/day), and Q5 (≥15.76 mg/day) were 0.73 (95% CI: 0.60–0.89, p = 0.004), 0.72 (95% CI: 0.55–0.95, p = 0.02), 0.76 (95% CI: 0.58–0.99, p = 0.04) and 0.73 (95% CI: 0.50–1.05, p = 0.08), respectively. Our findings also suggested an interaction between zinc intake and age (P for interaction = 0.007). Additionally, the relationship between zinc intake and migraine in adults with 20–50 years was non-linear. Introduction: Good Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) practices, introduction of Rotavirus vaccination, zinc supplementation and improved nutrition have contributed significantly to the reduction of diarrhoea morbidity and mortality globally by 50%. In spite of these gains, diarrhoea still remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in children under-five. Causes of diarrhoea are multifaceted with many factors such as seasonality, behaviour, pathogenicity, epidemiology, etc. However, assessments on the causes of diarrhoea have generally been tackled in silos over the years focusing only on particular causes. In this study, we describe an integrated approach (evaluating WASH interventions implantation processes, assessing epidemiolocal risk factors, and identifying pathogens causing diarrhoea) for assessing determinants of diarrhoea. Methods: The study has ethical approval from the Ghana Health Service Ethical Review Committee (GHSERC:020/07/22). It will employ three approaches; a process evaluation and a case-control study and laboratory analysis of diarrhoea samples. The process evaluation will assess the detailed procedures taken by the Anloga district to implement WASH interventions. A desk review and qualitative interviews with WASH stakeholders purposively sampled will be done. The evaluation will provide insight into bottlenecks in the implementation processes. Transcribed interviews will be analysed thematically and data triangulated with reviews. A 1:1 unmatched case-control study with 206 cases and 206 controls to determine risk factors associated with diarrhoea in children under-five will also be done. Odds ratios at 5.0% significance level would be calculated. Stool samples of cases will be taken and tested for diarrhoea pathogens using Standard ELISA and TAQMAN Array Card laboratory procedures. Expected outcome: It is expected that this framework proposed would become one of the robust approaches for assessing public health community interventions for diseases. Through the process evaluation, epidemiological case-control study and pathogen identification, we would be able to identify the gaps in the current diarrhoea assessments, come up with tailored recommendations considering the existing risk and assumptions and involve the relevant stakeholders in reducing the diarrhoea burden in a coastal setting in Ghana. One-carbon (1-C) metabolic deficiency impairs homeostasis, driving disease development, including infertility. It is of importance to summarize the current evidence regarding the clinical utility of 1-C metabolism-related biomolecules and methyl donors, namely, folate, betaine, choline, vitamin B12, homocysteine (Hcy), and zinc, as potential biomarkers, dietary supplements, and culture media supplements in the context of medically assisted reproduction (MAR). A narrative review of the literature was conducted in the PubMed/Medline database. Diet, ageing, and the endocrine milieu of individuals affect both 1-C metabolism and fertility status. In vitro fertilization (IVF) techniques, and culture conditions in particular, have a direct impact on 1-C metabolic activity in gametes and embryos. Critical analysis indicated that zinc supplementation in cryopreservation media may be a promising approach to reducing oxidative damage, while female serum homocysteine levels may be employed as a possible biomarker for predicting IVF outcomes. Nonetheless, the level of evidence is low, and future studies are needed to verify these data. One-carbon metabolism-related processes, including redox defense and epigenetic regulation, may be compromised in IVF-derived embryos. Recurrent Aphthous Stomatitis (RAS) is a condition characterized by the development of ulcers and lesions, in the mouth. It affects a wide portion of the population ranging from 5% to 25%. RAS more commonly affects labial mucosa, buccal mucosa, and tongue. Managing RAS involves treatment approaches that can be applied directly to the affected area as well as can be administered internally. Topical therapies involve using anesthetics, corticosteroids, and anti-inflammatory agents to alleviate symptoms. Systemic options include medications like colchicine, dapsone, clofazimine, levamisole, thalidomide and zinc supplements. However, for managing RAS no standardized and curative treatments are available. Thus, the objective of any treatment should be to lessen pain, reduce the duration of ulcers, and inhibit recurrence. Also, this work enlists various cells, receptors and pathways which need to be considered while developing an efficient therapy for RAS. Furthermore, herbal remedies can be beneficial in managing RAS without many side effects as in the case of some synthetic drugs. Some herbal treatments that have shown promise include Punica granatum var. pleniflora, Curcuma longa (turmeric), Hangeshinto and many more are reviewed in this work which will be a promising herbal drug to develop polyherbal dosage form for the same. Female reproductive aging is a normal phase of life that eventually leads to menopause and reproductive senescence. The current experimental investigation was intended to study zinc supplementation effects on early embryonic development and neonates in 26-28 weeks old female mice. In this investigation, 80 mature female mice were used that were divided into two groups of forty each. Two control groups received distilled water, while two Zn groups were given 0.115 mg/kg/day Zn orally daily during 2-3 estrous cycles. The female mice were all mated with adult males. Twenty female mice from both the control and Zn groups were euthanized by CO2 gas inhalation, and then a longitudinal incision in the abdomen of each female mouse was performed and uterine horns and oviducts were detached from the body in order to obtain two-cell embryos. On the other hand, 20 pregnant mice from each group were permitted to complete their pregnancy until birth and then their neonates were collected for macroscopic examination. The findings showed that the Zn supplementation significantly (P≤0.01) improved the mean embryonic development and the quality of 2-cell stage embryo grade A. Whereas, it decreased the mean embryonic development of 2-cell stage embryo grade D in aged female mice significantly (P≤0.01) in comparison with aged control groups. Also, the count and quality of neonates from Zn-treated aged female mice enhanced significantly (P≤0.01) as compared to non-treated aged female mice. Long coronavirus disease (COVID) syndrome leads to chronic inflammatory state onset that can have a multisystem impact and compromise organ function. Moreover, long COVID syndrome is often characterized by the presence of chronic fatigue, which affects subjects' daily activities and worsens their quality of life. The aim of our double-blind, placebo-controlled randomized trial (protocol code RS 150.21, approved on 4 November 2021) was to evaluate the beneficial effects of the consumption of 2 cps/day, for two months, of an oral food supplement (OFS), based on Echinacea angustifolia, rosehip, propolis, royal jelly and zinc, in long COVID patients, compared to a two-month placebo period. The OFS's vitamin C content was equal to 22.17 mg/g (8.87 mg/capsule). The OFS's total polyphenol content was 43.98 mg/g gallic acid equivalents. At the end of the in vivo study, we highlighted a significant decrease in the inflammatory parameters in the OFS period, compared to the placebo period (neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio, p = 0.0455; monocyte to-lymphocyte ratio, p = 0.0005; C-reactive protein, p = 0.0145). Our study also highlighted a significant increase in vitamin D serum values (p = 0.0005) and, at the same time, an improvement in patients' life quality and a reduction in fatigue, monitored by the fatigue severity scale. Zinc, a crucial trace element is vital for the growth and development of humans. It is frequently described as 'the flower of life' and 'the source of intelligence'. Zinc supplements play a pivotal role in addressing zinc deficiency by serving as a vital source of this essential micronutrients, effectively replenishing depleted zinc levels in the body. In this paper, we first described the biological behavior of zinc in the human body and briefly described the physiological phenomena associated with zinc levels. The benefits and drawbacks of various zinc supplement forms are then discussed, with emphasis on the most recent zinc supplement formulations. Objective: Exposure to heavy metals has been reported to be associated with impaired cognitive function, but the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. This pilot study aimed to identify key heavy metal elements associated with cognitive function and further explore the potential mediating role of metal‐related DNA methylation. Methods: Blood levels of arsenic, cadmium, lead, copper, manganese, and zinc and genome‐wide DNA methylations were separately detected in peripheral blood in 155 older adults. Cognitive function was evaluated using the Mini‐Mental State Examination (MMSE). Least absolute shrinkage and selection operator penalized regression and Bayesian kernel machine regression were used to identify metals associated with cognitive function. An epigenome‐wide association study examined the DNA methylation profile of the identified metal, and mediation analysis investigated its mediating role. Results: The MMSE scores showed a significant decrease of 1.61 (95% confidence interval [CI]: −2.64, −0.59) with each 1 standard deviation increase in ln‐transformed arsenic level; this association was significant in multiple‐metal models and dominated the overall negative effect of 6 heavy metal mixture on cognitive function. Seventy‐three differentially methylated positions were associated with blood arsenic (p < 1.0 × 10−5). The methylation levels at cg05226051 (annotated to TDRD3) and cg18886932 (annotated to GAL3ST3) mediated 24.8% and 25.5% of the association between blood arsenic and cognitive function, respectively (all p < 0.05). Interpretation: Blood arsenic levels displayed a negative association with the cognitive function of older adults. This finding shows that arsenic‐related DNA methylation alterations are critical partial mediators that may serve as potential biomarkers for further mechanism‐related studies. Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is the most common type of diabetes and is becoming an increasingly prevalent global health issue. Polymorphisms in genes coding metallothioneins, a group of small zinc-binding proteins that participate in antioxidative protection, are believed to be involved in T2DM pathogenesis. This study aimed to investigate the potential association of the single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) rs11640851 MT1A 80 C/A and the T2DM risk and to determine the impact of the genotype and allelic distribution on the diabetes-related biochemical parameters. The study included 298 subjects, 112 with T2DM and 186 healthy, non-diabetic controls. The participants' fasting glycemia and HbA1c levels were measured, while the SNP in the MT1A gene was determined using the PCR-RFLP method. There were no significant differences in the genetic distribution and allele frequency between control subjects and diabetic patients (p > 0.05). There was likewise no association between the SNP and diabetes-associated laboratory parameters, fasting serum glucose and HbA1c levels. However, 79.6% of allele C carriers had fasting glucose levels above 7 mmol/L, versus 53.3% of subjects homozygous for allele A (p = 0.005). Although our study did not find a direct association between the MT1A genetic variants and the occurrence of T2DM, we observed an effect of the allele C on glycemic control in the patients. Further research in a larger population is needed to expand these findings and to improve the understanding of metallothionein genes and their impact on the development of T2DM. Introduction: Zinc deficiency may worsen the severity of olfactory dysfunction; however, the relationship between serum zinc levels and therapeutic effects on olfactory dysfunction remains uncertain. This study investigated the relationship between normalising serum zinc levels and the therapeutic effects on olfactory dysfunction. Methods: Forty-two patients diagnosed with post-infectious, post-traumatic, and idiopathic olfactory dysfunction, with serum zinc levels <70 μg/dL, were included in the study. All patients were treated with mecobalamin, tokishakuyakusan, and polaprezinc. The patients were divided into 2 groups: the zinc-normalised (≥70 μg/dL) and zinc-deficient (<70 μg/dL) groups, based on their post-treatment serum zinc levels. Olfactory test results were compared in each of the 2 groups. Results: The patients were treated for a median of 133 days. The zinc-normalised group had significantly better results in all olfactory tests (detection/recognition thresholds of the T&T olfactometer, odour identification test (Open Essence), Visual Analogue Scale for olfactory dysfunction, and self-administered odour questionnaire). In contrast, only the self-administered odour questionnaire showed a significant improvement in the zinc-deficient group, with no significant differences observed in the other olfactory tests. When comparing the changes in the olfactory test scores between the 2 groups, significant differences were observed in the detection/recognition thresholds of the T&T olfactometer test and Open Essence results. Conclusion: These findings suggest that patients with olfactory dysfunction may have difficulty improving their olfactory function if they also have zinc deficiency. Furthermore, normalisation of zinc deficiency may contribute to the improvement of olfactory dysfunction with general treatment. Plain Language Summary: This study examined how zinc levels relate to problems with smelling, which is called olfactory dysfunction. We studied 42 participants who had trouble smelling due to infections, injuries, or unknown reasons and who also had low zinc levels in their blood. After the participants consumed a zinc supplement to treat their low zinc levels, we placed the participants either in the group for those who had their zinc levels go back to normal or in the group for those who remained zinc deficient. We tested the participants' sense of smell in different ways, including using an olfactometer, a card with different scents, and questionnaires. The group with normal zinc levels did much better in all the smell tests; the zinc-deficient group only improved in 1 test, which was the questionnaire. These results suggest that if someone has trouble smelling and they also lack the appropriate level of zinc, it might be difficult for them to get better. However, if they can improve their zinc level and bring it to a normal level, their sense of smell could improve. Excess oxidative stress generated in the body causes various types of cellular damage, including DNA damage. Certain trace minerals act as antioxidants by functioning as cofactors for antioxidant enzymes. This study was conducted to evaluate the serum and hair concentrations of major antioxidant trace minerals (zinc, manganese, selenium, and chromium) and to determine the association between the oxidative stress marker urinary 8-hydroxy-2′-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) and serum or hair antioxidant trace mineral concentrations, according to the general characteristics of healthy adults. Study participants were selected after screening, and 108 participants aged 19–69 years were finally included. Serum and hair trace mineral concentrations were analyzed using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, and urine 8-OHdG levels were quantified using an ELISA kit. Results showed that urinary 8-OHdG levels were significantly higher in exercisers than in those who did not exercise. Correlation analysis revealed that urinary 8-OHdG was negatively correlated with hair zinc in participants over 60 years of age and with poor health status, and positively correlated with hair chromium in participants with irregular dietary habits. In conclusion, these results suggest that urinary 8-OHdG is particularly correlated with hair zinc and chromium levels. Background: Copper and zinc in animal diets significantly impact livestock productivity. Zinc is not stored in the body and must be supplemented regularly to maintain optimal immuno-physiological function in animals. Many factors restrict the bioavailability of zinc and its absorption in the intestine. Cu deficiency is common in feed ingredients. Feeding copper levels in the diet is also essential for immune system optimization since copper inhibits the development of metabolic and oxidative stress in dairy cows. Methods: Experimental animals (n=18) were equally divided into three groups with an average body weight 29 kg. T0 was control group with basal diet, T1 group supplemented with copper sulphate (100 mg/goat/day+Basal diet) and T2 group supplemented with zinc oxide (40 mg/goat/day+Basal diet) for 90 days. Blood samples were collected at fortnight intervals and estimated using standard protocols. Result: Total antioxidant capacity (TAC) Superoxide dismutase (SOD) and Catalase were significantly higher in zinc supplemented group followed by copper supplemented group. Thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) were significantly lower in the zinc and copper supplemented groups compared to control group. Glucose concentration showed no significant change. Total cholesterol was significantly lower in the copper supplemented group. Total proteins, albumin and triglycerides were significantly higher in the zinc supplemented group than in other groups. Simple Summary: Zinc (Zn) is an essential trace mineral required for milk production and maintaining the optimal health of dairy cows. The current nutrient requirement models (e.g., NASEM (2021)) predict the dietary Zn requirement of dairy cows to be 60 mg/kg of dry matter (DM), based on the milk production and dry matter intake (DMI) of cows. North American farmers, however, supplement Zn at a higher rate of 76 mg/kg of DM, and a meta-analysis demonstrated that even higher Zn supplementation at 100 mg/kg of DM could improve udder health. In this study, increasing the dietary Zn supplementation from 76 to around 97 mg/kg of DM decreased the DMI by about 1.0 kg/d, but it improved the post-peak milk yield, which was associated with an increased milk protein yield and decreased somatic cell count in milk. Overall, the data highlight the possibility of improving the udder health and milk yield persistency by increasing the organic Zn supplementation well above the current recommendations. Because milk yield persistence and low somatic cell counts have critical implications for economic viability and animal well-being, Zn supplementation will directly affect the overall sustainability of dairy production. This study's objective was to determine the effects of increasing the dietary added zinc (Zn) on the milk production, milk somatic cell count (SCC), and immunoglobulin and antioxidant marker concentrations in the blood of dairy cows. Twelve Holstein cows (67 ± 2.5 days in milk) were assigned randomly to (1) a diet containing Zn–methionine at 76 mg/kg of DM (CTL) or (2) CTL top-dressed with about 21 mg/kg of DM extra Zn–methionine (+Zn) for 70 d. The concentrations of reduced (GSH) and oxidized (GSSG) glutathione, malondialdehyde (MDA), catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and immunoglobulins in the blood were measured on d 0, 35, and 70. Compared to CTL, +Zn decreased the dry matter intake (DMI) throughout the trial and the milk yield (MY) during the first phase of feeding (0–35 d). It, however, increased the milk yield during the last phase (36–70 d). The +Zn tended to have lower and greater milk protein yields than CTL during the first and last feeding phases, respectively. The +Zn tended to decrease the SCC and was associated with lower plasma GSH: GSSG and lower serum SOD concentrations relative to CTL. The +Zn did not affect the immunoglobulins, MDA, or CAT. Despite the early DMI and MY reduction, the prolonged Zn–methionine supplementation at about 100 mg/kg of DM improved the milk yield, possibly as a result of the improved udder health of dairy cows. The current experiment was carried out to determine the effect of zinc (Zn) supplementation on digestibility of nutrients and blood minerals concentration during hot season of local growing lambs. In the current experiment, twenty-seven local growing Awassi lambs with live weight 25.92 kg± SD=4.29, and aged 8 months ±SD=1.1, were allocated randomly in single pens (1.50 x 1.30 m) by live weight in indoor hall to one of three experimental treatments during July (hot season). Zinc was added to drinking water in three different levels, 0 ml/day (0 mg Zn), 3 ml/ day (36 mg Zn) and 6 ml/day (72 mg) as treatments one (T1), two (T2) and three (T3) respectively. The animals were adapted to the experimental treatments for 3 weeks, followed by 5 days of feed and fecal samples collection for further laboratory proximate analysis to determine the digestibility coefficient of nutrients. At day three of sample collection, blood samples were collected by jugular venipuncture at 11 a.m. for blood minerals and biochemical determination. The results showed that Zn supplementation increased (P<0.001) blood serum Zn concentration. In addition, Zn supplementation decreased both blood serum albumin (P=0.001) and glucose (P=0.010) in T3, whereas serum ALP concentration increased (P=0.042) in T3. Soil‐transmitted helminths (STHs) parasitic infection is known as one of the most common infections around the world affecting more than a quarter of the world's population. The relationship between STH infections and micronutrient deficiencies are closely related and often coexist among the affected population. The study, therefore, aimed to summarise the available literature focusing on the effect of zinc status/deficiency or supplementation on STH infection or reinfection in children. For this purpose, we adopted a systematic approach and searched the existing literature on PubMed, Scopus, and Cochrane Library databases. A search term was entered to retrieve the available data. A total of 12 articles were included in this review after applying the inclusion/exclusion criteria. Most of the included studies reported a lower zinc status in children affected with any parasitic infection. Regarding the effect of zinc status and supplementation on parasitic infection in children, we found only a few studies (n = 4) with inconsistent result findings. This review reported that children infected with STH have lower zinc levels; however, a limited number of studies showed the effect of zinc supplements on the risk of STH warrants the need for further studies in this regard. Simple Summary: The long-term overuse of zinc oxide by swine farms effectively alleviated the post-weaning diarrhea and improved the growth performance of piglets, whereas it also led to severe heavy metal residues and zinc emission pollution. In this study, sodium alginate-coated nano zinc oxide, a new type of zinc resource, was used and proved to be a potential alternative to traditional doses of zinc oxide, which showed beneficial effects on the growth performance, diarrhea rate, immune and antioxidant functions, zinc accumulation and excretion, short chain fatty acid concentration and the fecal microbial structure of weaned piglets. High dose of zinc oxide (ZnO) could improve growth performance and alleviate disease status, whereas it caused serious environmental pollution and bacterial resistance. This study was to investigate whether low doses of sodium alginate-coated nano zinc oxide (saZnO), a new type of zinc resource, could serve as a potential alternative to pharmacological doses of traditional ZnO in weaned piglets. A total of 144 crossbred piglets were randomly allocated into three groups, including a basal diet without the addition of Zn (CON), a basal diet with 1600 mg Zn/kg from traditional ZnO (ZnO), and a basal diet with 500 mg Zn/kg from saZnO (saZnO). The experiment lasted for 28 days. The results showed that supplementing with ZnO and saZnO for 14 and 28 days significantly improved body weight (BW) and average daily gain (ADG) (p < 0.01) and markedly reduced the feed intake-to-gain ratio (F/G) (p < 0.05) and diarrhea rate. In addition, dietary ZnO and saZnO significantly increased the activities of the total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) (p < 0.01). Supplementing with saZnO also promoted the levels of superoxide dismutase (SOD), IgM and copper- and zinc-containing superoxide dismutase (Cu/Zn-SOD) in serum (p < 0.05), whereas a ZnO addition decreased the concentration of malondialdehyde (MDA) (p < 0.05), indicating the beneficial effect of Zn on antioxidant and immune functions. Piglets fed the ZnO diet showed higher serum Zn accumulations than those fed the CON and saZnO diets at d 28 (p < 0.01), and supplementing with ZnO and saZnO markedly contributed to Zn excretion in feces, especially in the ZnO diet (p < 0.01). Additionally, piglets fed the saZnO diet had greater valeric acid concentrations (p < 0.05) in their feces, while other short chain fatty acids (SCFAs) were not affected by different treatments (p > 0.05). Microbial alpha diversity was reduced in the saZnO group compared with the CON group (p < 0.05), while an obvious separation of microbial composition, the marker of beta diversity, was shown among the three groups (p < 0.05). At the genus level, six genera, including Clostridium_sensu_stricto_1, Terrisporobacter, f_Muribaculaceae, Subdoligranulum and Intestinibacter, were pronouncedly increased in the ZnO and saZnO groups (p < 0.05); another nine species were dramatically downregulated, such as f_Lachnospiraceae, f_Prevotellaceae, f_Butyricicoccaceae and f_Ruminococcaceae (p < 0.05). Background Zinc helps with cell division, growth, wound healing, and carbohydrate breakdown. Humanbeings have to obtain zinc from food or supplements because our bodies do not produce it naturally. In view of the greater advantages (such as low cost, time of analysis, and stability-indicating) compared to other quantification methods (titration, ion chromatography, Atomic absorption spectroscopy) proposed in the literature, a refractive index detector coupled with HPLC has been used in quantification of zinc. Objective The goal of this research is to develop and validate a sensitive, low-cost, high-resolution, and stability- indicating method for detecting and quantifying zinc levels in zinc supplement pharmaceutical products (injectables, tablets, and capsules). Methods A novel isocratic reverse-phase HPLC method with a refractive index detector (with sensitivity 64, detector temperature 35°C, and positive polarity) was developed using a carboxyl functional group packed column and 0.8% (v/v) formic acid as the mobile phase to detect and quantify zinc content. Results The reported method has a good optimal sensitivity (LOQ: 0.006 mg/mL and LOD: 0.002 mg/mL). The correlation coefficient (r) obtained from the zinc calibration plot was greater than 0.998, indicating that the method was linear and that there was a strong correlation between zinc concentration (0.006 mg/mL to 0.375 mg/mL) and peak response. The accuracy at LOQ level was found to be 95–105% and 97–103% at the remaining levels (50, 100, and 150%). Conclusion The proposed method was successfully developed and validated as per International council for harmonisation (ICH) guidelines. This study was implemented to evaluate the effects of different zinc doses as Zinc-Met supplement (Zinpro®) on the antioxidant status, blood immune cells, antibody titers, and the expression of IL-4 and IL-6 genes of ewes in the hot season. In a completely randomized design, 24 ewes were assigned to treatments as follow: 0, 15, 30 and 45 mg/kg zinc as Zinc-Met supplementation for 40 days in region with 40 °C and vaccinated against food-and-mouth disease as an immune challenge at day 30, and then blood samples were collected on day 40. Ewes were fed a basal diet containing 29.9 mg zinc/kg. The highest activity of the antioxidant enzyme and the lowest lipid peroxidation values were found in ewes receiving 30 and 45 mg/kg zinc following a linear trend. The highest lymphocytes count and antibody titers were found in ewes received 30 mg zinc/kg. There were no significant differences among treatments for the relative expression of genes. In overall, zinc supplementation non-significantly up-regulate interleukin-4 and down-regulate interleukin-6. It was concluded that zinc supplementation as Zinc-Met could enhance the antioxidant status and immune response of ewes under heat stress; supplementation of diet with 30 mg zinc/kg (300 mg/kg Zinpro®) appeared to be the most effective dose. This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of dietary supplementation of different sources of zinc on the quantitative and qualitative characteristics of semen and blood testosterone in Mahabadi mature bucks. Twenty-four mature male goats (40 ± 0.86 kg), approximately 1-1.5 years old, were divided into three groups (n = 8) and assigned to experimental treatments for 56 days in a completely randomized design. The treatments included: 1. control (a basal diet containing 22.14 mg/kg zinc without zinc supplement), 2. basal diet + 35 mg/kg Zn as ZnSO4 (an inorganic source of Zn), and 3. basal diet + 35 mg/kg Zn as ZnMet (an organic source of Zn). Qualitative (ejaculate volume, sperm concentration) and quantitative (viability, membrane integrity, morphology, and CASA detected parameters) properties of semen and plasma testosterone and Zn, Cu, and Fe concentrations were evaluated. Results showed that ZnMet vs. ZnSO4 increased sperm membrane integrity and plasma Zn concentration and reduced morphologically abnormal spermatozoa (P=0.05), but there were no significant differences in other parameters. Viability, membrane integrity, morphology, some of the CASA detected parameters (total motility, straight-line velocity, average path velocity, beat cross frequency of sperm), and the plasma concentration of testosterone in zinc-supplemented groups was significantly higher than the control group. In conclusion, the positive effects of an organic source of Zn were seen in reducing abnormal spermatozoa and improving membrane integrity, plasma Zn concentration, and plasma testosterone concentration. Simple Summary: Beef calves are born with underdeveloped immune systems and extremely vulnerable to diseases. Therefore, calf health is one of the most significant animal health issues facing the livestock industry. Maternal nutrition during pre- and post-partum with essential nutrients plays a significant role in offspring's physiological functions. Thus, this study attempted to evaluate the effects of supplementation of the maternal diet with organic trace minerals on the health and immune status of beef calves. This study indicated that maternal supplementation with trace minerals containing zinc, manganese, copper, and cobalt is a promising strategy for preventing infections and improving calves' immunity. In this study, we evaluated the effects of supplementation of the maternal diet with organic trace minerals including Zn (zinc), Mn (manganese), Cu (copper), and Co (cobalt) on the health and immune status of beef calves. We examined 19 pregnant cows, which were divided into a group of 9 cows fed a basal diet (control) and 10 cows fed a diet with organic trace minerals (treated). Cows were fed for a period of 45 days before the predicted calving date until 45 days after calving. The number of treatments needed for respiratory and digestive diseases within 14 days of birth was significantly lower in the treated group (p < 0.05) than the control group. In addition, the concentration of serum zinc in the treated group on day 1 was significantly higher (p < 0.05) than that in the control group. The numbers of CD4+ and CD8+ cells in the treated group on days 30 and 60 were significantly increased (p < 0.01) compared with those in the control group, as was the number of γδ T cells on days 1 and 30 (p < 0.05). The number of IgM+ cells in the treated group on days 30 and 60 was significantly increased (p < 0.01) compared with that in the control group, as was the number of MHC class II+ cells on day 60 (p < 0.01). The number of NK cells in the treated group on day 60 was also significantly increased (p < 0.05) compared with that in the control group. The expression levels of mRNAs encoding interlukin-2 (IL-2), interlukin-4 (IL-4), interlukin-12 (IL-12), and interferon-γ (IFN-γ) in the treated group were significantly higher than those in the control group (p < 0.05) on days 1 and 60. Introduction: Zinc has a key role in reproductive physiology, immune modulation, growth, and development. To determine the effect of zinc supplements on the anthropometry of healthy 6-year-old children. Methods: In this double-blind placebo-controlled trial was carried out on 40 children 6-7 years old. The intervention group (n=20) received 20mg of oral zinc sulfate syrup and the control group (n=20) received a placebo daily in the same buttle and same test for 6 months duration of study. Serum zinc levels and anthropometric measurements (weight, height, head circumference, and arm circumference) were measured before and after intervention. Zinc deficiency was defined as serum zinc level < 9.9 µmol/l. Results: Serum zinc level did not differ between the two groups (P=0.86). Zinc supplementation resulted in a significant increase in height (P= 0.008). This study was conducted to investigate the effects of dietary supplementation of active dry yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) on growth performance, circulating ghrelin, fatty acid concentrations in the gastrointestinal tract, and trace mineral elements utilisation of finishing bulls. Twenty Yanbian cattle (bulls) [body weight (BW) 485 ± 38 kg] were randomly divided into two groups (control and treatment groups) and participated in a 100-day finishing trial. The control group (CON) was fed a basal diet (total mixed ration, TMR). The treatment group (active dry yeast, ADY) was fed a basal diet supplemented with ADY (Levucell SC, Saccharomyces cerevisiae CNCM I-1077, viable count ≥8.0 × 109 CFU/g, 1.0 g/bull/day). ADY supplementation significantly increased the dry matter intake (DMI) of bulls (p <.05); significantly increased the concentration of ghrelin O-acyl transferase (GOAT) (p <.05), significantly decreased the concentration of corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) (p <.05), tended to increase the concentration of acyl ghrelin (AG) (p =.053) in serum; significantly increased the content of C12:0 in duodenal digesta, the apparent digestibility of Zn, the concentrations Zn and Cu in serum and the deposition of Cu in the liver (p <.05), significantly decreased the deposition of Fe in muscle in finishing bulls (p <.05). In conclusion, ADY supplementation improved DMI of finishing bulls may be related to the change of AG, and a potential mechanism for the change of AG by ADY supplementation is via its effects on the metabolism of C12:0, Zn, and Cu in finishing bulls. Active dry yeast (ADY) supplementation increased the dry matter intake (DMI) and tended to increase the concentration of acyl ghrelin (AG) in the serum of finishing bulls. Background: The aim of this study was to explore the association between serum copper-zinc (Cu-Zn) ratio and the risk of respiratory tract infection in children and adolescents. Methods: This cross-sectional study collected the data of 1695 participants who aged 6–17 years with follow-up data on respiratory tract infection in 2011–2012, 2013–2014 and 2015–2016 cycles from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) database. Univariate logistic regression analysis was applied to explore the covariates. Each covariate was adjusted in multivariate logistic regression analysis to explore the correlation between serum Cu-Zn ratio and respiratory tract infection. Subgroup analysis was performed to stratify the data according to age, gender and BMI. Restricted cubic spline (RCS) curve was plotted to identify the association between serum Cu-Zn ratio and respiratory tract infection. Results: The results of RCS curve depicted that the risk of respiratory tract infection was increased as the elevation of the serum Cu-Zn ratio. After adjusting for confounders, risk of respiratory tract infection in children and adolescents was elevated with the increase of serum copper-zinc ratio (OR = 1.38, 95%CI: 1.19–1.60). Compared with people with serum copper-zinc ratio <1.25, subjects who had serum copper-zinc ratio >1.52 was associated with increased risk of respiratory tract infection in children and adolescents (OR = 1.88, 95%CI: 1.19–2.98). Subgroup analysis demonstrated that the risk of respiratory tract infection was elevated as the increase of serum copper-zinc ratio in participants <12 years (OR = 1.65, 95%CI: 1.28–2.12), ≥12 years (OR = 1.27, 95%CI: 1.03–1.57), males (OR = 1.63, 95%CI: 1.29–2.06), females (OR = 1.26, 95%CI: 1.01–1.57), underweight and normal (OR = 1.35, 95%CI: 1.11–1.65), and overweight and obese participants (OR = 1.44, 95%CI: 1.15–1.80). Conclusion: Higher serum Cu-Zn ratio was associated with increased risk of respiratory tract infection in children and adolescents, which suggests the importance of Zn supplement and the balance of serum Cu-Zn ratio in children and adolescents. Cyclopia longifoli a Vogel L. is endemic to the Cape fynbos, and cultivated for the production of Honeybush tea, a herbal beverage with health benefits and economic potential in the cosmetic and nutraceutical industries. In this study, field plants were supplemented with different levels of Cu, Mo, Mn and Zn using 0, 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 mM solutions of Na 2 MoO 4 ·2H 2 O and MnSO 4 ·2H 2 O and 0, 1.0 and 1.5 mM solutions of ZnSO 4 ·7H 2 O and CuSO 4 ·5H 2 O in a split-application. Plant shoots were harvested at 300 days after fertilization for biomass determination and analysis of mineral nutrients. The results showed significantly increased shoot dry matter yield of C. longifolia in response to Mn, Cu, Zn and Mo supplementation under field conditions, and was highest at the 1.5 mM level of each applied micronutrient. These results suggest that field fertilization of Cyclopia plants can lead to increased plant growth and greater tea yield, in addition to overcoming nutrient mining from the annual harvests of plant shoots for making tea. Objective: To determine the effect of Zinc supplement on duration of acute watery diarrhea from 6 months to 5 year aged children. Study Design: Randomized Controlled Trial. Setting: Pediatric Unit, Mardan Medical Complex, Mardan, Pakistan. Period: 1st July 2022 to 31st December 2022. Material & Methods: A total of 100 children aged from 6 months to 5 years presenting with acute watery diarrhea were included in the study. Patients were divided into 2 equal groups. In Group-A patients were given oral Zinc supplement at a dose of 20mg daily while in Group-B children were not given oral zinc supplement. Follow up visit was set on day 3 after start of treatment. Primary outcome was set as frequency of diarrheal episodes during 24 hours while the secondary outcome was character of stool. Results: The Mean±SD of age in this study was 13.51±6.27 months with an age range of 6-30 months. The ratio of male gender was higher than female (59% Vs 41%). Clinical outcomes showed a significant decrease in frequency of diarrheal episodes (3.88±1.11 vs 4.58±1.03, p=0.001) and in number of children with watery stool (42% vs 70%, p=0.05) in Group-A compared to group-B. Number of children recovering from diarrhea was higher in group-A compared to group-B (14% vs 2%, p=0.026). Conclusion: Zinc supplement significantly reduces frequency of diarrheal episodes and improves character of stool in children with acute watery diarrhea aged from 6 months to 5 year. Background: There is ongoing research to find an optimum modality to predict male fertility potential. Aims: To compare the semen parameters, sperm DNA damage and seminal metal levels of Zinc, Lead and Aluminium among the male partners of couples with unexplained infertility and men with proven fertility. Settings and Design: Prospective case-control study at a tertiary level teaching hospital. Materials and Methods: One hundred male partners of couples with unexplained subfertility and 50 men with proven fertility were included in the study. Male partners of unexplained infertility couples and fertile men were compared for their semen parameters, sperm DNA Fragmentation Index (DFI) and seminal metal levels in semen. Statistical Analysis Used: Chi-square test, Student's t-test, sensitivity and specificity analysis, binomial logistic regression analysis. Results: Fertile men had statistically significantly higher mean progressive sperm motility than male partners of unexplained infertility (53.12 ± 9.89% vs. 44.81 ± 19.47%, P = 0.005). Semen volume and sperm concentration were comparable among the cases and control population. The mean sperm DFI was significantly lower among fertile men (10.83 ± 6.28 vs. 21.38 ± 10.28, P < 0.0001). Plotting the receiver-operating characteristic curve the threshold for discrimination was calculated to be 18% DFI. The sensitivity specificity and overall accuracy were 43%, 84% and 56.67%, respectively when the DFI cut-off was set at 18%. Zinc concentration in the semen had a strong positive correlation (Point Biserial correlation coefficient = 0.831) with fertility, whereas lead and aluminium had a moderate negative correlation. Conclusion: Conventional semen analysis had limited differentiating ability for unexplained infertility. The sperm DFI may be employed for explanatory purposes among couples with unexplained subfertility. A lower discriminatory threshold of DFI (18%) has better overall accuracy as opposed to a 30% cutpoint for unexplained subfertility. Among metals, Zinc was strongly correlated with fertility status. The current study was conducted to study the impact of low-CP protein diets with different sources of zinc (zinc oxide-ZnO and zinc methionine-Zn-Met) on performance, lipid profile, immune and antioxidant parameters of quail breeders. A total number of 216 Japanese quail at 8 weeks of age were randomly distributed into nine (3 × 3) groups, with four replicates, each of six quails (four females and two males). Quails were fed three levels of CP (16, 18, and 20%) and three sources of Zn (0, 0.1 g ZnO, and 0.1 g Zn-Met/kg diets). No significant differences in daily feed intake (FI), feed conversion ratio (FCR), and egg mass are due to the main effect of protein levels or zinc sources at all ages. Dietary CP (16 and 20%) in growing quail diets increased SOD and GSH, while IgG levels were improved by 18%. Finally, it can be recommended that 16% CP and zinc source (Zn-Met or ZnO) can maintain egg mass, as well as lipid profile, immunological and antioxidant parameters in Japanese quails breeders. Objective: The purpose of this study was to assess the protective effects of zinc against injury to sperm parameters and male reproductive hormones brought on by toxic protein supplement constituents. Methods: 30 male Sprague Dawley rats were used in the study, of which 10 were in Group 1 (given standard laboratory food), 10 were in Group 2, fed standard laboratory food nutritional supplement powder and 10 were in Group 3, fed standard laboratory food, nutritional supplement powder and zinc. Semen Analysis of Male Sprague Dawley rats of all 3 groups was evaluated after 8 weeks. Sperm parameters and serum levels of Male Reproductive Hormones were measured at the beginning and the end of the study. Results: There was a significant decrease (P<0.05) in Mean ± SEM of sperm count millions /ml, sperm motility (%), and normal sperm morphology (%) in Group 2 rats when compared with Group 1. Zinc supplement in Group 3 caused a significant increase (P<0.05) in Mean ± SEM of sperm parameters including sperm count millions /ml, sperm motility (%) and normal sperm morphology (%) as compared to Group 2 rats. Mean ± SEM of serum level of testosterone Hormone, Follicle Stimulating Hormone(FSH), and Luteinizing Hormone(LH) of Group 2 rats showed a significant (P<0.05) decrease when compared with Group 1 rats. However, the use of Zinc in Group 3 rats significantly (P<0.05) increased serum Testosterone, FSH, and LH levels when compared to Group 2. No significant difference was noted between serum levels of Testosterone, in Group 1 and Group 3. Serum levels of FSH and LH in Group 3 rats (484.81+ 78.17 ng/ml) were significantly increased (P<0.05) as compared to Group 1 rats. The factors included two levels of Zn (0 and 10 mg Zn kg−1 soil derived from ZnSO4.7H2O) and nine different genotypes of wheat (Iraqi genotypes: Al-Rashid, Abu-Ghoraib, Latifiyeh, Tamuz 2, Bahus 22, Abba 95, Abba 99, and Iranian genotypes: HamoonZnE and Hirmandnon-ZnE). All plants were grown under similar experimental conditions for 90 days. Then the studied parameters comprised Zn, Mn, K, and P concentrations in grain, stem, leaf, and root of all genotypes were determined. In addition, to get a better understanding of Zn-efficiency (ZnE), two parameters including shoot Zn efficiency (SZnE) and Zn acquisition efficiency (ZnAE) were calculated. Aims: Copper deficiency resulting from prescribing zinc in high doses is a rare but life‐changing diagnosis that is frequently overlooked. The aim of this study is to gauge how often zinc‐induced copper deficiency is missed, to raise awareness of the condition and to stress the need for guidelines for prescribing zinc. Methods: Suspected cases of zinc‐induced copper deficiency were retrospectively obtained by selecting those patients with hyperzincaemia and hypocupraemia from the database of the Scottish Trace Element Laboratory. Case records were reviewed to determine the validity of the suspected diagnosis. Results: After exclusions, 23 instances of high serum zinc and low serum copper concentrations were found. A positive diagnosis of zinc‐induced copper deficiency was made in 14 patients, of which 7 (50%) were previously undiagnosed. Conclusion: Serum zinc and copper concentrations are rarely measured in patients prescribed zinc and so the vast majority of cases of zinc‐induced copper deficiency are likely to be undiagnosed. The harmful influences of global warming on rabbit reproduction and industry attract global attention. Zinc (Zn) is an important trace element with a wide list of functions in the male reproductive system. The aim of this study was to estimate the effects of different forms of zinc supplementation, as organic (Zn methionine), nano (nano Zn oxide) as indirect way to minimized it impact on environment, and inorganic (Zn sulphate) on physiological parameters, semen quality, anti-oxidative status, hormonal profiles of male rabbits subjected to server heat stress. Thirty-six V-line bucks (6–7 months old, 2842.29 ± 34.46 g weight) were randomly distributed to 4 groups, bucks in 1st group (control group, Con) fed basal diet without Zn supplementation, the 2nd, 3rd and 4th groups fed basial diet with 30 mg/kg of zinc methionine (Zn-Met), nano zinc oxide (ZnO-NPs), and zinc sulphate (Zn-S), respectively for a period of 10 weeks suffered from severe heat stress of environmental ambient temperature (over 32 of temperature humidity index, THI). Semen samples were collected and evaluated for volume, pH, motility, concentration, viability, initial fructose, and seminal plasma antioxidant concentration. Liver, kidney function, hormonal and antioxidant profile were measured in blood serum. The results revealed that, compared to control, all forms of Zn supplementation used significantly improved kidney function (creatinine), serum antioxidant (SOD and CAT), physiological parameters, especially on 1st month of the experiment, and seminal plasma antioxidant (SOD and CAT) of heat stressed bucks. Likewise, semen quality in terms of sperm concentration, sperm viability, and initial fructose enhanced significantly (P ≤ 0.05) by ZnO-NPs supplementation. Zinc methionine supplementation significantly improved liver function and decreased seminal plasma TBARs. Treatments with Zn-Met and ZnO-NPs increased seminal TAC and blood testosterone levels with reduced blood cortisol levels compared to other groups. Severe heat stress could be counteract by inclusion Zn with studied forms Zn-Met and ZnO-NPs at recommended dose (30 mg/kg diet) to improve semen quality and antioxidant status. The recent temperature extremes and other associated climatic events pose a detrimental effect to ruminant livestock. To abate this, it is necessary to adopt a functional (biotechnology) approach like the use of nano minerals as feed additives for normal immune function. Nano zinc oxide (nZnO) has demonstrated growth-promoting properties and has been reported to improve antioxidant capacities with high bioavailability recorded in ruminant. This study therefore aimed to research into nano zinc supplementation on growth performance, haematology, serum, oxidative and antioxidant enzymes of West African dwarf (WAD) goats. A total of 18 yearling WAD goats (7.2 ± 0.54 kg) were allocated into 3 treatments of 6 animals per treatment on weight equalization bases. Each group was randomly allotted to three (0, 300 and 600 mg/kg nZnO) experimental diets. Data on haematological parameters, serum minerals and serum biochemical parameters were collected on day 0 and day 84 of the experiment. Data collected were subjected to analysis of variance in a completely randomized design (CRD), and significant means were separated using Tukey's test. It was revealed that West African dwarf goats fed 600 mg/kg nZnO recorded the highest (p < 0.05) PCV and white blood cell values (32.00% and 5.70 × 103/L, respectively) while goats fed 300 mg/kg nZnO recorded the lowest values. At day 84, nZnO supplementation increased serum total protein, globulin and total cholesterol concentration, with higher values (7.57 g/dl, 4.17 g/dl and 95.73 mg/dl) recorded for goats fed 300 mg/kg nZnO. Lower aspartate aminotransferase (66.33 U/L) was observed for goats fed diets containing 300 g/kg nano zinc oxide. Serum minerals (phosphorus, zinc, copper and iron) were elevated in 600 mg/kg nZnO group. Supplementation of nZnO had no significant (p > 0.05) effect on blood superoxide dismutase (SOD) and total bilirubin concentration while reduced (p < 0.05) malondialdehyde (MDA) and urea values were recorded in 300 and 600 mg/kg nZnO supplemented treatments. Goats fed 600 mg/kg nZnO recorded a lower (p < 0.05) glutathione peroxidase value for kidney (24.78 U/mg) and forelimb cut (24.89 U/mg) while kidney, liver and forelimb cut SOD values (4.61, 2.45 and 5.84 U/mg, respectively) were highest at 300 mg/kg nZnO group. The study concluded that supplemented nZnO aided maintenance of and improved the health of the experimental animals through elevated PCV, serum parameters, reduced MDA, urea and other oxidative biomarkers in both serum and organs of West African dwarf goats. The present work was conducted to assess the effect of diets supplementation to heat-stressed buck rabbits with different zinc (Zn) sources on the thermoregulatory and hematobiochemical parameters, and antioxidant status. A total of 24 mature buck rabbits (32–36 weeks of age) were randomly distributed into four groups (6 each). Group 1, non-heat-stressed control (NHSC), was reared in the absence of heat stress (HS) conditions and received the basal diet only. The other three groups (groups 2, 3 and 4) were kept in HS conditions. Group 2, heat-stressed control (HSC), received the basal diet only. The diet supplemented with 75 mg Zn/kg diet either in the inorganic form (Zn sulfate) or in the organic form (Zn picolinate) for groups 3 and 4, respectively. Zn supplementation to rabbits' diets lowered the heat stress-related increase of serum urea, alanine transaminase and malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration. These supplementations also increased the concentration of testosterone under HS conditions. Zn picolinate was more effective than Zn sulfate in restoring serum concentrations of urea, testosterone, and MDA. In conclusion, Zn addition to rabbits' diets from different sources, especially Zn picolinate, exhibits an ameliorative effect against the harmful impact of HS on hematobiochemical parameters and antioxidant status. Simple Summary: The need for methods to lessen the impacts of heat stress has increased due to climate change. The addition of trace elements to the food of chicks is an approach used to enhance production yield while boosting grill productivity. In livestock production, selenium is a crucial trace mineral for improved performance, physiological state, and health advantages. Numerous studies have examined the advantages and uses of both organic and inorganic selenium in poultry feeding. On the other hand, there is a dearth of knowledge on the use of organic selenium in heat-stress situations. In this work, we assessed the impact of dietary organic selenium on broiler growth performance, carcass characteristics, and blood profiles under heat stress, with or without a zinc-chromium mixture. According to the findings, adding organic selenized yeast improves the haematological, biochemical, and antioxidant status of broilers as well as their productivity. The weights and carcass qualities of the birds given Zn-Cr plus low or high Se levels were improved. In light of this, we concluded that the combined effect of feed additives (Zn-Cr and organic-Se) could reduce the effects of heat stress on broilers by increasing metabolic processes and enhancing growth performance. To determine the effects of organic selenium (0.0–0.6 mg and 0.9 mg Se/Kg diet) and Zn-Cr mixture (100 mg Zn/Kg diet plus 1.5 mg Cr/Kg diet) on broiler chicken performance, carcass traits, blood hematology, and biochemistry under heat stress conditions, this study was conducted. Under temperatures between 30.21 to 31.82 °C, 240 broiler chickens (Ross-308), which were 7-day-old, were randomly assigned to one of six treatments: T1 (control), T2 (100 mg Zn per kg of diet and 1.5 mg Cr per kg of diet), T3 (0.6 mg Se per kg of diet), T4 (0.9 mg Se per kg of diet), T5 (100 mg Zn, 1.5 mg Cr and (LSe), and T6 (100 mg Zn, 1.5 mg Cr and (HSe)). At 35 days old, the chicks fed a diet containing Zn-Cr with low or high organic selenium (organic-Se) outweighed the control group in terms of live body weight, weight gain, and feed conversion ratio (p < 0.05). In comparison to the control treatment, birds fed diets supplemented with Zn-Cr or organic-Se (LSe, HSe) significantly increased their serum levels of total protein and total antioxidant capacity. Simple Summary: Zinc is an essential mineral supplemented to human and pig diets as inorganic (inorganic salts) or organic (bound to an organic compound) sources. Some studies reported that pigs fed diets with organic zinc sources respond better to stress conditions than those fed diets with inorganic sources. In this study, we identified genes in the small intestine that may explain those differences. We fed finisher pigs with diets containing organic or inorganic zinc sources for 32 days and conducted gene expression analysis of intestinal ileum samples. The organic Zn source induced lesser level of pro-inflammatory cytokine interleukin 18 (IL18), but greater Toll-like receptor 2 (TLR2) gene expression than inorganic Zn, suggesting that an organic Zn source may improve the condition and immune response of animals under stress by modulating gene expression in the intestine. We also explored if intestinal epithelial cells, which are in direct contact with diet components, are the main cells showing these changes. We exposed intestinal organoids or epithelial "mini-guts" to zinc sources in vitro. Organoids showed changes related to Zn supplementations but did not reproduce the changes of immune-related genes observed in the animal samples, indicating cells other than epithelial are affected by Zn sources. The study aimed to identify the effect of different Zn sources on intestinal epithelial gene expression. In total, 45 pigs (9 per treatment) (77.5 ± 2.5 kg weight) were fed for 32 days, a corn-soybean meal diet without supplemented Zn (ZnR) or supplemented with 50 and 100 ppm of inorganic ZnCl2 (Zn50 and Zn100), and amino acid-bound organic Zn sources (LQ50 and LQ100). Gene expression changes form RNA-seq in ileum tissues of ZnR revealed changes associated with Zn insufficiency. Comparing organic with inorganic Zn sources by one-way ANOVA, pro-inflammatory cytokine interleukin 18 (IL18) was downregulated (p = 0.03) and Toll-like receptor 2 (TLR2) upregulated (p = 0.02). To determine the role of epithelial cells in response to dietary Zn, swine intestinal organoids (enteroids) were exposed to Zn restriction, ZnCl2 or LQ-Zn. In enteroids, ZIP4 expression decreased with added Zn compared with Zn-restriction (p = 0.006) but Zn sources did not affect (p > 0.05) IL18 or TLR2 expression. Simple Summary: Diarrhea is the most common disease in dairy calves and occurs frequently during the first month of life. It affects animal welfare and causes substantial economic losses. Zinc (Zn) is an essential nutrient element that can reduce the incidence of diarrhea. This study was designed to examine the effects of supplementary Zn proteinate (ZnPro, an organic zinc source) and Zn oxide (ZnO, an inorganic zinc source) on growth performance, diarrhea, antioxidant capacity, immune function, and mineral element concentrations of dairy calves during the first 28 days of life. Both ZnPro and ZnO reduced the bouts of diarrhea and promoted the immune function of calves, but ZnPro improved the growth performance and antioxidant capacity to a greater extent than ZnO. It was concluded that ZnPro is a better zinc source to improve calf health and performance than ZnO. The current study examined the effects of supplementary zinc proteinate (ZnPro) and zinc oxide (ZnO) on growth performance, diarrhea, antioxidant capacity, immune function, and mineral element concentrations of calves aged 1 to 28 days. A total of twenty-four newborn calves were divided randomly into 3 groups (n = 8; 2 males and 6 females per group), and each received: 0 mg/d Zn (CON), 627 mg/d ZnPro (80 mg/d Zn; ZnPro group), and 101 mg/d ZnO (80 mg/d Zn; ZnO group). The calves received the additive in their milk during the first 28 days of life. Compared with the CON group: ZnPro and ZnO improved average daily gain (ADG) and decreased the feed:gain ratio (FGR) between days 1 and 14 (p < 0.05), while the ADG increased and FGR decreased only in the ZnPro group between days 1 and 28 (p < 0.05). The incidence of diarrhea decreased (p < 0.05) in the ZnPro and ZnO groups between days 15 and 28 as well as days 1 and 28, but decreased (p < 0.05) only in the ZnPro group between days 1 and 14. The serum immunoglobulin G (IgG) concentration of the ZnPro and ZnO groups increased on days 14 and 28 (p < 0.05). ZnPro supplementation increased serum IgM concentration during the whole study, while ZnO enhanced serum IgM concentration only on day 14 (p < 0.05). In the ZnO group, the serum concentration of cytokines interleukin (IL)-10 increased on day 14, while that of IL-1β increased on day 28 (p < 0.05). In addition, ZnPro reduced the serum malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration on days 14 and 28 (p < 0.05). Both ZnPro and ZnO increased the serum concentrations of alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and metallothionein (MT) on day 14 (p < 0.05). This study was conducted to investigate the influence of different amounts of zinc methionine on the blood biochemistry, hematological parameters and productivity of growing rabbits. Studies have been conducted on 15 rabbits of the Termon white breed, which were randomly divided into three groups of 5 animals in each – one control and two experimental. Animals of the control group were fed with the commercially granulated feed, whereas animals in the experiment group G1 and G2 were fed with the same basal ration supplemented with 10 and 20 mg/kg Zinc-Methionine, respectively. The supplement was added from 50 days of animal age during 40 days. Samples of blood from the marginal ear vein were taken for biochemical and hematologic researches at ten days’ intervals during experimental periods. Body weight gain was determined by weighing. High Zn supplementation decreased (P < 0.05) mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular haemoglobin (MCH) and mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration (MCHC), as compared to control group, while other hematological parameters of rabbits remained unaffected. Results showed that serum albumin concentration were significantly increased on the 70th and on the 80th days of study (P < 0.05) in rabbits received zinc-methionine compared to control animals, while total protein content did not change. The creatinine concentration in the blood of rabbits of the both experimental groups was decreased (P < 0.05) on the 90th day of experiment, as compared to the control. Total cholesterol and triglycerides concentrations were decreased significantly during all period of feeding ZnMet-supplemented diet in both experimental groups. Serum ALT and AST constituent were not significantly affected by dietary treatments comparing to the control. However, serum ALP activity significantly (P < 0.05) increasedon the 80th day of experiment in rabbits fed Zn-Met at the both doses. Also, LDH content was significantly increased (P < 0.05) on the 80th and 90th day of the research in high dose-treated rabbits (G2 group), compared to the low dose-treated animals or control group (P < 0.05). Conclusively, the results revealed that fortification of diet with Zn-Met at level of 10 and 20 mg/kg could significantly enhance the nutrients digestibility of growing rabbits without harmful effect on blood constituents. This study assessed iron and zinc levels of preschoolers. 276 children were randomly chosen from 8 preschools. Weight and height were measured using standard techniques. After blood was obtained, serum zinc, iron, ferritin, transferrin saturation, and transferrin were assessed. Dietary intake was calculated using the Food Frequency Questionnaire. Prevalence of severe underweight, stunted, and acute malnutrition was 4.7%, 12.7% and 2.9%. Using transferrin saturation<5%, one-quarter were iron deficient. Simple Summary: Weaning causes gut microbiota disruption that results in dysbiosis and post-weaning diarrhea. The recent ban on pharmacological doses of in-feed zinc oxide in the weaned pig diet has made exploration of alternative dietary supplements to improve the post-weaning condition of pigs imperative. Plants (e.g., red beetroot) containing bioactive compounds have shown great potential in this regard, favorably abating gut microbiota dysbiosis and promoting gut metabolite production and health. Red beetroot is a well-recognized and established source of bioactive compounds (e.g., betalains and polyphenols) with anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. It is proposed as a potential alternative to zinc oxide with a focus on gut microbiota modulation and metabolite production. In this study, weaned pigs aged 28 days were fed either a control diet, a diet supplemented with zinc oxide (3000 mg/kg), or 2% and 4% pulverized whole red beetroot (CON, ZNO, RB2, and RB4; respectively) for 14 days. After pigs were euthanized, blood and digesta samples were collected for microbial composition and metabolite analyses. The results showed that the diet supplemented with red beetroot at 2% improved the gut microbial richness relative to other diets but marginally influenced the cecal microbial diversity compared to a zinc-oxide-supplemented diet. A further increase in red beetroot levels (4%—RB4) led to loss in cecal diversity and decreased short chain fatty acids and secondary bile acid concentrations. Also, an increased Proteobacteria abundance, presumably due to increased lactate/lactic-acid-producing bacteria was observed. In summary, red beetroot contains several components conceived to improve the gut microbiota and metabolite output of weaned pigs. Our objectives were to evaluate the effects of complete replacement of inorganic salts of trace minerals (STM) with organic trace minerals (OTM) in both pre- and postpartum diets on ovarian dynamics, estrous behavior measured by sensors, preimplantation conceptus development, and reproductive performance in dairy cows. Pregnant cows and heifers (n = 273) were blocked by parity and body condition score and randomly assigned to either STM or OTM diets at 45 ± 3 d before their expected calving. Pre- and postpartum diets were formulated to meet 100% of recommended levels of each trace mineral in both treatments, taking into consideration both basal and supplemental levels. The final target concentrations of Co, Cu, Mn, Se, and Zn were, respectively, 0.25, 13.7, 40.0, 0.3, and 40.0 mg/kg in the prepartum diet, and 0.25, 15.7, 40.0, 0.3, and 63.0 mg/kg in the postpartum diet. The STM group was supplemented with Co, Cu, Mn, and Zn sulfates and sodium selenite, while the OTM group was supplemented with Co, Cu, Mn, and Zn proteinates and selenized yeast. Treatments continued until 156 d in milk (DIM) and were assigned to individual cows using automatic feeding gates. Starting at 21 DIM, ultrasonography examinations of the ovaries were performed weekly to determine the presence of a corpus luteum and postpartum resumption of ovarian cyclicity. Cows were presynchronized with 2 injections of PGF 2α at 42 and 56 DIM. Estrous behavior was monitored using electronic activity tags that indirectly measured walking activity. Cows detected in estrus after the second PGF 2α were inseminated, and those not detected in estrus by 67 DIM were enrolled in a synchronization program. Cows that returned to estrus after artificial insemination (AI) were reinseminated. Pregnancy diagnosis was performed 33 d after AI, and nonpregnant cows were resynchronized. Transcript expression of interferon-stimulated genes in peripheral blood leukocytes was performed in a subgroup of cows (STM, n = 67; OTM, n = 73) on d 19 after AI. A different subgroup of cows (28 STM, 29 OTM) received uterine flushing 15 d after AI for recovery of conceptuses and uterine fluid for analyses of transcriptomics and metabolomics, respectively. In addition, dominant follicle diameter, luteal size and blood flow, and concentration of progesterone in plasma were measured on d 0, 7, and 15 relative to AI. After flushing, PGF 2α was given and the dominant follicle was aspirated 2 d later to measure the concentration of trace minerals by mass spectrometry. Estrous behavior, size of the dominant follicle and corpus luteum, concentration of progesterone, time to pregnancy, and proportion of cows pregnant by 100 d of the breeding period did not differ between treatments. A greater proportion of cows supplemented with OTM had a corpus luteum detected before presynchronization (64.3 vs. 75.2%), and primiparous cows supplemented with OTM tended to resume cyclicity earlier than their STM counterparts. Cows supplemented with OTM had a greater concentration of Cu in follicular fluid than cows supplemented with STM (0.89 vs. 0.77 µg/mL, respectively). In pregnant multiparous cows, expression of receptor transporter protein 4 in peripheral blood leukocytes was 42% greater in the OTM group. Conceptuses of the 2 treatments had 589 differentially expressed transcripts, with many indicating advanced conceptus elongation and greater transcript expression of selenoproteins in the OTM group. In pregnant cows, 24 metabolites were more abundant in the uterine fluid of OTM, including spermidine, sucrose, and cholesterol. In conclusion, replacing STM with OTM caused modest improvements to resumption of ovarian cyclicity and important changes in preimplantation conceptus development, but it did not alter conception risk and pregnancy rate. Background: Zinc is found in very high concentration in semen and male reproductive tract and acts as a hormone receptor modulator for testosterone production in Leydig cells. Thus, it plays a very important role in male reproduction. Moreover, Indian soils are very deficient in zinc as per earlier reports and recent studies have shown that supplementation of zinc has improved qualitative as well as the quantitative aspects of semen quality in bulls. So, a study has been planned to study the effect of organic zinc supplementation on semen production and quality in kankrej bulls. Methods: A total of 8 healthy Kankrej bulls under semen collection were selected for the study. Basal diet (concentrate mixture, green and dry fodder) was fed during pre-supplementation and zinc propionate @ 100 ppm/bull was supplemented to the basal diet during post-supplementation for a period of 60 days to complete one spermatogenic cycle. A total of 128 ejaculates (64 pre-supplementation and 64 post-supplementation) were collected. Result: Mean semen volume was non-significant (P>0.05) between the treatment groups. Mean sperm concentration was 1325.68±80.08 and 2162.36±112.0 million/ml pre- and post-supplementation, respectively. Feeding of zinc propionate significantly (P<0.01) increased semen sperm concentration. The average mass motility of sperms was significantly (P<0.01) higher during postsupplementation (3.92%) than the pre-supplementation (3.78%). The overall live sperms were significantly (P<0.01) higher during post-supplementation (73.33±0.91%) than the pre-supplementation (63.53±1.03%). It may be concluded that supplementation of 100 ppm of zinc propionate in the diet of Kankrej bulls improved semen quality in terms of quantitative and qualitative characteristics of semen. Introduction: Enteric fever is an important tropical disease which takes an average of five days for defervescence even with effective antibiotic therapy. Zinc has been successfully used as an adjuvant in diarrhoeal disease. If addition of oral zinc can lead to reduction in time to defervescence, it will be a useful adjuvant in the therapy of enteric fever. Aim: To determine the effect of oral zinc supplementation, along with standard antibiotic therapy, for early defervescence among children with enteric fever. Materials and Methods: This double-blinded, randomised controlled trial was conducted at the Department of Paediatrics, ESICMC and PGIMSR, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India from November 2014 to August 2016. A total of 58 children aged <12 years with enteric fever were included and were randomised to receive 40 mg elemental zinc per day (n=29) or placebo (n=29) for one week. All children received intravenous ceftriaxone (75 mg/kg every 12 hours) until five days after defervescence. The main outcome measures studied were time taken for defervescence of fever and resolution of toxaemia. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis was used to compare differences in the time to resolution of toxaemia and defervescence of fever between the two groups and the log-rank test was used to test for significance. Results: The mean age of the children of the two groups was 6.48±3.15 years and 7.55±2.59 years, respectively. The mean time for fever defervescence was shorter among the zinc supplemented children than among the children in the control group (2 vs 3 days, p-value=0.043). Resolution of toxaemia was noted earlier in the zinc group than in the control group (75% vs 43%, p-value=0.054). Conclusion: Zinc when used as an adjunct along with standard antibiotic therapy in children with enteric fever, resulted in earlier defervescence of fever. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A greenhouse pot experiment was conducted to evaluate the impact of zinc supply (0, 1, and 2 mM Zn as ZnSO4) on morpho-physiological and biochemical parameters of caraway (Carum carvi L.). Exposure to different Zn concentrations for 12 weeks compromised severely all growth parameters (plant height, number of secondary branches, diameter of primary and secondary branches, fresh and dry weight of aerial parts and roots) yield and its components (number of umbels per primary branches and secondary branches; number of umbel per plant; number of seeds per plant; and the weight of 1000 seeds). These manifestations were intimately linked with excessive accumulation of Zn in roots and leaves, alteration of the content of photosynthetic pigments, and extended lipid peroxidation. A manifest increment of proline and soluble sugar content was also observed in response to Zn application. Lipid content in seeds was dropped in Zn-treated plants and the fatty acid profiles were profoundly affected as they were enriched with saturated fatty acids at the expense of unsaturated ones. While improving their oxidative stability as revealed by the reduced values calculated oxidizability and oxidative susceptibility, Zn treatment reduced the lipid nutritional quality of caraway seeds. Moreover, Zn treatment reduced the essential oil yield and its main component carvone while it enhanced the content of its precursor limonene. It also induced alteration of terpene metabolism as revealed in the redirection of the carbon flux to the shikimate/phenylpropanoid pathway resulting in the stimulation of the production of phenolic compounds and their subsequent antioxidant activities.
