The present paper describes the results of observational studies of Sakurajima volcanic eruption columns using an X-band marine radar. The X-band marine radar was set up at the Kurokami Observatory located approximately 4 km from the Sakurajima Minamidake vent. We carried out observations by physically changing the rotational axis of the slot antenna, from vertical to horizontal, to achieve an elevation angle resolution of 1.2°. The observation period was from April 11 to May 31, and the collected data was for a total of 57 outstanding eruptions. To our knowledge, our observations represent the first time that marine radar has been used to successfully detect eruptions and falling pyroclastic particles. The radar revealed the fine structure of an ascending eruption column at 1.25 -second intervals. The present study demonstrates that eruption source parameters such as eruption onset time, duration, height, and ascending speed can be estimated by marine radar observations.

本研究は、桜島の大規模な噴火に備えて、人々の防災への意識ならびに知識の向上を図るために、学校教育で活用できる桜島に関する教材を開発することを目的としている。研究方法は、火山ならびに桜島に関する教材開発に向けて、1）教材開発の視点の明確化、2）火山ならびに桜島に関する資料の収集と分析、3）教材の具体化、4）火山ならびに桜島に関する教材の内容の検討、5）開発した教材の活用の仕方の提言、である。結果は、以下に要約できる。1．火山ならびに桜島に関する教材開発に向けて、火山ならびに桜島に関する資料の収集を行った。資料の収集する際の視点としては、防災だけでなく、地理、歴史、観光など様々な視点から桜島が学べるということと、桜島の魅力を伝えるという視点である。2．教材の具体化としては、副読本の開発を行った。副読本は全82 ページ、5 章編成で、教材のねらいとしては、1）現在の桜島の状況を踏まえつつ、これから起こりうる大規模な噴火に向けた防災への意識ならびに知識の向上を目指す、2）防災を考える際、自然は、危険なものとして位置づけられてしまうが、一方で私たちに多くの恩恵を与えており、自然には災害と恩恵の二面性があることを意識させる、3）自然科学的な視点だけでなく、地理・歴史・経済など様々な視点を取り入れ、環境教育、道徳教育とも関連して取り扱えること、である。

Sakurajima volcano has been active since February 2009. The total number of explosive eruptions was 966 in 2011, which was the highest number in recorded history. Corresponding to volcano activities, the ash accumulation in Kagoshima city increased and total ash amount of 3, 500g m-2 was recorded at Kagoshima local meteorological observatory. Because the volume of volcanic ash in rural area paralyze public ground transportations such as rail road and highway, fast recovery efforts are required to the railroad company and city government. However, no quantitative volcanic ash fall estimation has been established. The present study focuses on utilization of weather radars for quantitative ash estimation (QAE), quantitative ash forecasting (QAF), and utilization of crustal movement information for providing ash volume. The knowledge on volcanic ash and algorithm developed by the present study can be applied to any other volcano which is located in operational weather radar observation area.

We studied the oviposition pattern and the population dynamics of the Japanese pine sawyer, Monochamus alternatus, on young small-sized trees of Japanese black pine wilted in 2008 and 2009. The oviposition scars were concentrated at the lower part of tree trunk, where the bark was thicker. Adult females laid eggs at about 50% (52.3% in 2008, 57.3% in 2009) of oviposition scars. Hatchability of deposited eggs was 88.9% in 2008 and 95.1% in 2009. The oviposition ratio and hatchability of eggs in this study did not differ from those reported by mature large-sized pine trees. The mortality rate of larvae under bark was 16.6% in 2008 and 48.8% in 2009. The mortality rate of the insect in the wood was 75.3% and 91.7% for the 2008 and 2009 population, respectively. The total mortality from hatch to adult emergence was 81.6% for the 2008 population and 95.7% for the 2009 population, which was higher than those reported by mature large-sized pine trees. These results suggest that young small-sized pine trees are less valuable for reproduction of the insect than mature large-sized pine trees. The situation where the insect should utilize only small-sized pine trees for reproduction since 2006 might partly explain the sudden decline in the number of the insect and the pine wilt disease in Sakurajima after 2010.

This report summarizes current progress of ongoing research on airborne measurement of mass concentration of volcanic plume from Mt.Sakurajima. First, we discuss issues on improvement of volcanic ash dispersion prediction models, which help aviation control during volcanic eruption. Second, we summarize procedure of airborne measurement and data processing. Third, we demonstrate partially-successful two cases of high concentration airborne measurement in the vicinity of plume edge and in the middle of streak fallout of ash in comparison with X-band radar images.

A large amount of volcanic ash attaining 1.5×105 ton was ejected by the vulcanian eruption at 16h31m on August, 2013 and the volcanic plumed at an elevation of 5, 000 m above the Showa crater. The eruption is evaluated as the largest one among the eruptions at the Showa crater during the period from 2008 to 2013. The largest eruption was preceded by longer time inflation period than usual ones, marked by significant inflation strain starting 110h prior to the eruption. Considering balance of inflation with the sudden deflation accompanied by the eruption and deflation long-term trend starting July 11, 2013, the inflation may start on August 1, 17 days prior to the eruption. Eruption scale evaluated by volume of volcanic ash increased after November 2011, as shown by increase in co-eruptive contraction strain. The eruption on August 18, 2013 is a typical evidence to show increase scale of eruption.

火山噴火時に現地の情報を定期的に入手するには複数の通信回路を確保することが重要となる。そこで、（独）宇宙航空開発研究機構 （JAXA）とともに、技術試験衛星Ⅷ型「きく8号」を利用して、降灰量を計測する自動降灰・降水量計のデータが伝送可能か確かめるための共同研究を行った。本稿では共同研究の実施内容とその結果について報告する。, 資料番号: PA1410062000

桜島昭和火口で2009年2月縲・月に発生した噴火のうち，空気振動波形の明瞭な81イベントについて空気振動波形と地震波形のスタッキング処理を行い，それぞれの特徴抽出を行った。空気振動波形については，大振幅で急速な圧力上昇で特徴付けられる主要相に前駆して，微弱で緩慢な圧力上昇のある先行相が認められた。この先行相には継続時間や波形にバリエーションがあることも確認できた。地震波形の先頭部分には特徴的な3つの位相(順にP波，レイリー波，レイリー波)が見出せた。山頂火口の噴火過程の知見を基にこれらを鑑みると，最初のP波は山体内部で発生した地震によって励起され，また，二つ目のレイリー波は，空気振動現象の形成に対応した火口底直下の膨張現象によって放射されたと考えられる。他方，一つ目のレイリー波は，昭和火口の噴火地震にのみ観察されることから，昭和火口の噴火過程を決定付ける重要な現象だと考えられる。, We investigated the characteristics of observed infrasound and seismic records associated with 81 eruptions at Showa crater of Sakurajima volcano that occurred during the period from February 1 to April 9, 2009. From a staking procedure of infrasound records, three types of the preceding phase were clearly recognized as no preceding type, normal preceding type and stagnated or pulse-like preceding type, prior to the onset of the main impulsive phase. On the other hands, applying same method to seismic records, three characteristic phases could be identified in the initial part; the first one was the P wave which would produced at a deeper portion of the volcano and the third one was the Rayleigh wave as same as the LP phase of explosion earthquake of the summit explosion. However, the second phase of the Rayleigh wave have not been observed at the summit eruptions, which would become a key feature for understanding eruption processes of Showa crater.

2007年5月から6月のおよそ40日間にわたって，桜島昭和火口で噴火活動が発生した。2007年噴火初期には，それまで火道内を埋めていたと考えられる比較的低温の灰放出が観測された。第2活動期は，100℃を超える噴煙が頻繁に観測され，初動の立ち上がりが明瞭な，いわゆる爆発型の空気振動を伴う噴火である。赤熱物質の放出や火映が観察されるなど，2007年噴火の活動最盛期であったといえる。噴火活動が終息する直前2週間は，20縲・0℃の低温噴煙が放出され，この現象に対応する空気振動は約1 Hzに卓越周波数を持つ単調微動型であった。, Showa crater of Sakurajima volcano erupted again in 2007 after 1 year's interval. Activity of this 2007 eruptions was able to be divided into three stages. The first stage was characterized by weak ejection of volcanic materials without significant infrasound signals. This stage lasted only for the first few days. Main explosive eruptions accompanying with impulsive infrasound waves occurred in the second stage (about two weeks). During this stage, incandescent reddish ejecta were frequently observed. Temperatures of the eruption clouds were relatively high (~160°C). Final two weeks was categorized into the third stage of the 2007 eruptions. Peculiar infrasound tremor signals (peak frequency was about 1.0 Hz) were recorded associated with minor ash eruptions.

2006年6月4日に，桜島東斜面の昭和火口周辺部から噴火活動が始まり，6月20日までのおよそ半月間継続した。今回の噴火活動は間欠的な小規模噴煙放出で特徴付けられ，6月9日以降はごく小規模な火砕サージも発生した。昭和火口周辺を含む桜島南岳の東～南東斜面の熱異常域は、2006年3月にはすでに活発化しており，これは2006年噴火の前兆現象のひとつであった。, The 2006 eruptions around Showa crater which located at the eastern flank of Minamidake, Sakurajima volcano, started on June 4, 2006, after 58 years dormancy. It continued about half a month. This eruption was characterized by the numerous emissions of volcanic slugs with time intervals of 5-30 min. Small scaled pyroclastic surges were observed after June 9 till the end of the eruption. As results of infrared thermal observations during 2006, geothermal activities of eastern to southeastern flank of Minamidake have increased prior to the 2006 eruptions. Still March 2007, no significant changes of thermal activities have been recognized after the eruption.

本稿では，火山噴火の予知と火山災害の軽減にとって火山活動の中期的（数10年）な予測評価が重要であるという認識に立って，噴火ポテンシャルという概念を提示し，それに含まれるべき内容と評価に必要なデータ・知識について論じている．桜島を例として噴火ポテンシャル評価を行い，当面の20年に予想される4つの活動シナリオを示し，噴火にいたる過程で発現する現象，予想される災害と影響範囲を見積もった．噴火ポテンシャル評価が可能の知識・データの蓄積のある火山は多く見積もっても全国で20火山程度であり，その他の火山での評価は困難であり予期せぬ顕著な噴火が発生する可能性が高い．, This manuscript proposed a concept ‘eruption potential’ and discussed its contents and data and knowledge necessary for its evaluation. As one example, eruption potential at Sakurajima volcano was shown: possibility of eruption in a few decades, possible styles of eruption, eruption scenarios and expected hazards. In Japan, similar evaluation as Sakurajima might be possible at about 20 volcanoes among 108 active volcanoes. At other volcanoes, it is difficult to evaluate eruption potential.

In Haruo Umezaki's last novel, Illusion (Genka), he severely criticized Japan and the Japanese after World War II. His criticism is, however, a kind of self-criticism and in it he doesn't take a high-handed attitude. This work symbolizes the hollowness of the mind-set of postwar Japan. He attempted to deepen this theme by easing his strained body and saving his soul from mental distress. His intention is keen, and reaches the deepest point of the Japanese mind. His manner in this work is like 'anma' (massage). This thesis focuses on this relaxing attitude of criticism.

In January 1914, a large eruption occurred at Sakurajima volcano with large quantities of pumice release, and the issues of lava flow followed it. The issues of lava flow can be divided into two stages; the first stage lava flow and the second stage. The volcanic activity was thought to be over by the summer of 1914, however, in the next spring, a new lava flow was found to issue from the end of second stage lava flow. Fukuyama (1978) called this new lava flow as "secondary lava flow" and distinguished it from the second stage lava flow. The most characteristic feature of the secondary lava flow is the presence of fissures distributed at the center of lava-lobe surface along the flow direction. This indicates that the watershed, where tensile stress can be released easily, played an important role for the formation of fissure. The formation process of fissure was discussed based on the observation of wall rock of fissures. 1) After the cease of lava advancement, the tensile stress should occur on the surface part of lava lobe due to the injection of new lava into the lava lobe, 2) along a cooling joint, a large fissure should grow into the lava through the brittle crust, 3) the growth of fissure attained to the viscoelastic part, then, spine-like texture was formed on the wall rock of a fissure. We calculated the sinking distance of phenocrysts in Taisho II lava flow (ca.70m in thickness) based on the Stokes's law and the equation of Shaw (1972). Phenocrysts could sink only about 5m for 400 days which is the time duration of Taisho II lava flow to Taisho II secondary lava flow. Silica content decreases gradually with time except for Taisho II secondary lava flow, and modal abundances of phenocrystic minerals of Taisho II and II secondary lava flows are almost equal. Taking these facts into the consideration, we concluded that Taisho II secondary lava flow was not the product of insitu-differentiation within the second stage lava flow, but a new lava injected into the second stage lava flow., 論文, Article

桜島火山東部において自然電位分布を測定した。海水面を等電位とみなして過去に得られた電位分布と接続することにより, 島を東西に横断する測線で約3分の2の長さにわたって電位分布を得ることができた。桜島の山頂部に向かって電位が高くなる傾向が認められることから, 島の中央部地下にその上昇部をもつ全島規模の熱水対流系が存在する可能性が示された。, We conducted a self-potential survey in the eastern part of Sakurajima volcano. We combined the SP data with those of previous studies by assuming the equi-potential of the sea water. Consequently, we have obtained a SP profile across the Sakurajima from west to east, though the active summit area still remains to be measured. After the linear topographic correction, we found that the SP increases toward the summit of the volcano. It suggests a large hydrothermal convention cell of a whole-island scale with its upwelling part under the central vent.

桜島火山西部の大正噴火割れ目のやや北側に帯状の自然電位異常が検出された。一方, この異常を横切る測線での直流電気探査によって, 爆裂火口である引ノ平の地下に高抵抗体が, 高電位部の地下には低比抵抗体が存在することが明らかになった。これらの結果から, この高電位異常は地下における熱水対流の上昇部に対応しており熱水の流動は溶岩の固結した火口ではなくそれに隣接した破砕域で卓越していることが推察される。, A banded self-potential (SP) anomaly was found in the westem part of Sakurajima volcano, southwestem Japan.This positive SP anomaly lies along the fissure of 1914 eruption and probably corresponds to the upflow part of subsurface hydrothermal convection. A DC electric sounding conducted along the survey line across the banded anomaly revealed that a conductive part exists 50-1OOm below the positive SP anomaly. These results suggest that the hydrothermal fluid flow is more prominent in the fractured zone adjacent to a vent than in the vent itself chokedwith the solidified lava.

1997年4月に桜島および姶良カルデラ周辺で, 9回目の精密重力測定を実施した。姶良カルデラ周辺の測定点における重力変化傾向は, 定性的には地盤変動から期待される重力変化に調和的であった。桜島中央部を中心とした1975年以降1992年まで続いた重力増加傾向は, 前回(1992年)から今回の測定の問, それ以前に比べて鈍った。近年の山頂噴火活動の静穏化を反映しているのではないだろうか。, The 9th precise gravity measurement was conducted in and around Sakurajima in Apr. 1997. The trend of gravity changes around Aira caldera is in harmony with that expected from the ground deformation.Successive gravity increase observed around the center of Sakurajima since 1975 seems to slow down between the last (1992) and the present measurements. It may reflect the low activity of summit eruption of Sakurajima since 1993.

京都大学と日本航空は火山と空港・航空路とが互いに隣接しあい, 火山灰回避の為の時間的余裕が少ない鹿児島空港から桜島周辺地域において, 火山活動に起因する航空機災害防止を図る為, 桜島火山の活動の事前予測, 爆発的噴火の検出, 火山灰拡散の予測, 及びそれらの情報の鹿児島空港への迅速な情報伝達について共同で研究した。その結果, 航空機災害防止に有効なシステムの開発に成功した。, In order to mitigate volcanic ash hazards to aircraft, Kyoto University and Japan Airlines have developed systems at Sairurajima Volcano and in the Kagoshima Airport region by methods of (1)predicting volcanic activities, (2)detecting volcanic eruptions, and (3) predicting volcanic ash trajectory and transport.The results were successful. This suggests one comprehensive system for the mitigation of volcanic ash hazards in volcano regions that have air routes located in the proximity.

Based on field surveys，we investigated the conditions of revegetation and the accumulation of volcanic ash，including their respective physical characteristics，caused by the ebb of volcanic activity at the Amida River basin of Sakurajima Volcano. The results were as follows: (1) The density of trees and the total volume of tree trunks tended to increase with decreasing volcanic activity effects and volcanic ash. (2) In a comparison of distance between two points located about 2.5 km and 3.5 km from the Minamidake crater of Sakurajima Volcano，the yearly depth of the volcanic ash layer during heightened volcanic activity (between 1972 and 1993) was，respectively，between about 3.0 and 6.0 times (average 4.6 times) greater than that measured during low activity (between 1994 and 2005) (3) In a comparison of distance between two points located about 2.5 km and 3.5 km from the Minamidake crater of Sakurajima Volcano，the dry density of the volcanic ash layer was，respectively，between 1.30 g/c㎥ and 1.45 g/c㎥ (average1.37 g/c㎥) during the period of heightened volcanic activity，and it was between 1.24 g/c㎥ and 1.33 g/c㎥ (average1.27 g/c㎥)，respectively，during the period of low activity. The void ratio of the volcanic ash layer during the periodof low activity was greater than that during the period of heightened volcanic activity. (4) In a comparison of distance between two points about 2.5 km and 3.5 km from the Minamidake crater of Sakurajima Volcano，the median diameter of solid particles in the volcanic ash layer was，respectively，between 0.14 mm and 0.23 mm ( average 0.18 mm) during the period of heightened volcanic activity，and it was between 0.12 mm and 0.20mm (average 0.15 mm)，respectively，during the period of low activity. The median diameter of solid particles in the volcanic ash layer during the period of low activity was smalier than that during the period of heightened volcanic activity., 本論では，桜島アミダ川流域で実施した調査結果に基づき，噴火活動の衰退に伴う植生回復状況，火山灰堆積の状況およびその土壌・土質と物理特性について検討した。得られた結果は次の通りである。 (1)木本植生の個体密度および蓄積量は，噴火活動および火山灰の影響が小さくなるほど増加する傾向にある。 (2)南岳火口から約2.5～3.5kmの範囲で比較すると，噴火活動が活発な期間(1972～1993年)における年平均での火山灰層厚の平均値は，穏やかな期間(1994～2005年)におけるそれの約3.0～6.0倍(平均4.6倍)である。 (3)南岳火口から約2.5～3.5kmの範囲で比較すると，噴火活動が活発な期間(1972～1993年)における火山灰層の乾燥密度は1.30～1.45g/c㎥ (平均1.37g/c㎥)，穏やかな期間(1994～2005年)におけるそれは1.24～1.33g/c㎥ (平均1.27g/c㎥) であり，活動が穏やかな時期における火山灰層の空隙率が大きい。 (4)南岳火口から約2.5～3.5kmの範囲で比較すると，噴火活動が活発な期間(1972～1993年)における火山灰層の中央粒径は0.14～0.23mm(平均0.18mm)，穏やかな期間(1994～2005年)におけるそれは0.12～0.20mm(平均0.15mm) であり，活動が穏やかな時期の方が小さい。

Field surveys were carried out in order to clarify the differencesin sediment yield by sheet erosion caused by periods of both heightened (between April and October 1985) and low volcanic activity (between April and October 2005) in adition to the factors governing the differences in sediment yield over two time periods on the flank of Sakurajima Volcano covered with broad-leaved forest. The results were as follows: (1) When rainfall intensities were constant，sediment yields were much smaller during periods of low volcanic activity than during periods of heightened activity. (2) The amounts of individual sediment yield during periods of low volcanic activity in Sheet A (experimental catchment with a 34 degree slope inclination) and Sheet B (experimental catchment with a 43 degree slope inclination) were about 0.4 % and 0.5 % of those measured during periods of heightened activity. The reason for this large decrease in sediment yield by sheet erosion during periods of low volcanic activity was thought to be due to the increase of infiltration capacity and the decrease in the magnitude of the surface runoff caused by the recovery of the vegetation following the ebb of volcanic activity., 桜島の広葉樹林で覆われた斜面において，噴火活動が活発な時期(1985年4月～同年10月)と穏やかなそれ(2005年4月～同年10月)における表面侵食土砂量を比較した。さらに2つの時期における表面侵食土砂量の違いを支配している要因についても検討した。得られた結果は以下の通りである。(1)降雨強度が同程度の場合で比較すると，噴火活動が穏やかな時期の表面侵食土砂量は，活発な時期のそれに比べ非常に小さくなっていた。(2) Sheet A試験地(斜面傾斜34度)および、SheetB試験地(斜面傾斜43度)における噴火活動が穏やかな時期の表面侵食土砂量の合計値は，活発な時期のそれのそれぞれ約0.4%， 0.5%であった。噴火活動が穏やかな時期の表面侵食土砂量の方が，活発な時期のそれに比べ非常に小さくなった理由として，噴火活動の衰退に伴う植生回復によって斜面の浸透能が増加したこと，浸透能の増加により表面流の発生条件が緩和され，表面流の発生頻度と規模が減少したことが挙げられる。

The flanks of Mount Sakurajima are widely and thickly covered with volcanic ash after a long period of volcanic activity. As a result，much sediment was generated from the flanks and flowed out due to debris flows and mud flows occurred in the rivers located around Mount Sakurajima. In this paper，we investigated the gully erosion process and the temporal change in sediment yield from gully erosion based on field surveys and interpretation of aerial photographs，as well as the effects of the temporal change in volcanic activity on sediment yield from gully erosion in the Saido River basin in Mount Sakurajima. The results are as follows: (1) The gullies were extensively distributed on the slopes covered with volcanic ash in the Saido River basin. The density and scale of the gullies，as well as the proportion of gully erosion area in the basin area of the Saido River basin became considerably larger over time. The proportion of gully erosion area in the basin area reached about 50 % in 2000. (2) The average annual sediment yield from gully erosion，average specific annual sediment yield from gully erosion， and average annual sediment yield from gully erosion divided by average annual rainfall reached a peak between 1984 and 1991，and subsequently declined with the temporal decrease in volcanic ash. The average annual sediment yield and average specific annual sediment yield between 1984 and 1991 were about 61,500 ㎥ and about 43,000 ㎥/k㎡，the largest annual values for the period of 1978 to 2000., 桜島の山腹斜面は，長期にわたる噴火活動の影響を受けて，火山灰に広く，分厚く覆われている。この結果，桜島の山腹斜面からは侵食によって多量の土砂が生産され，土石流・泥流によって多量の土砂が流出している。本論では，桜島の北側に位置する西道川流域を対象として，現地調査および空中写真判読の結果に基づき，ガリー侵食過程およびガリー侵食による生産土砂量の経年変化について検討した。さらに，噴火活動の経年変化がガリー侵食による生産土砂量のそれに及ぼす影響についても検討した。得られた結果は以下の通りである。 (1) 西道川流域の火山灰に厚く被覆された斜面では，広範囲にガリーが刻まれていた。ガリーの密度および規模だけでなく，流域面積に占めるガリー面積の割合も経年的に非常に大きな増加を示した。流域面積に占めるガリ一面積の割合は，2000年時点、で約50%に達した。 (2) ガリー侵食による年平均での生産土砂量および比生産土砂量，さらに雨量1mmあたりのガリー侵食による年平均での生産土砂量は，1984～1991年の期間に最大となり，その後噴火活動の衰退に伴って経年的に減少した。本論で解析対象とした1978～2000年の期間において，生産土砂量の最大値を示した1984～1991年の期間のガリー侵食による年平均での生産土砂量および比生産土砂量は，それぞれ約61,500㎥，約43,000㎥/k㎡であった。

桜島の噴火活動が植生の成長と侵食速度に及ぼす影響を、現地調査の結果に基づき検討した。得られた結果は次の通りである。(1)植生調査の結果、噴火活動の影響が小さな試験地ほど樹高の大きな木本植生が進入し、多様度指数が大きくなっていた。(2)噴火活動の影響が小さな試験地ほど森林植生および落葉層が回復し、侵食速度が小さくなっていた。

桜島の噴火活動に盛衰に伴う雨水・土砂流出量の変化について、現地調査結果に基づき検討した。得られた結果は次の通りである。(1)現地降雨実験によれば表面侵食による流出土砂量と表面流出量は、期間雨量の増加に伴って大きくなる傾向にあるが、同程度の期間雨量に対する流出土砂量と表面流出量は、噴火活動が活発な時期を想定した火山灰散布後の斜面のほうが大きい。また、表面流出量当たりの流出土砂量の値(SD/SR)は、火山灰散布後の斜面のほうが散布前のそれよりも大きな値を示した。(2)噴火活動の盛衰を漂流の流出モデルにおけるパラメータ地の変化によって表すと、損失雨量およびマニングの粗度係数は散布前のそれに比べ減少した。マニングの粗度係数の変化は、火山灰散布前後の斜面における表層火山灰層の粒径の違いと調和的であった。また、流出発生息(計算値)は期間雨量の増加に伴って大きくなる傾向にあるが、同程度の期間雨量に対する流出発生息(計算値)は火山灰散布後の斜面のほうが大きな値を示した。

桜島引ノ平川流域において、噴火活動が活発な期間(1972～1992年)と穏やかな期間(1993～2004年)における降下火山灰の堆積状況および侵食速度について調査し、活動の盛衰に伴うそれらの変化について検討した。得られた結果は次の通りである。(1)噴火活動が活発な期間(1972～1992年)における年平均での火山灰層厚は、穏やかな期間(1993～2004年)におけるそれの約1.2～3.9倍(平均約2.1倍)である。(2)火山灰層の乾燥密度は、噴火活動が活発な期間(1972～1992年)で1.44～1.65g/cm^3(平均1.52g/cm^3)、穏やかな期間(1993～2004年)で1.31～1.49g/cm^3)であった。(3)噴火活動が活発な期間(1972～1992年)の年侵食速度は、穏やかな期間(1993～2004年)のそれの約3.6倍となっている。

桜島の噴火活動による火山灰の被覆が斜面の雨水・土砂流出および流出過程に及ぼす影響について,現地実験の結果に基づき検討した。得られた結果は次の通りである。(1)火山灰散布斜面における表面流出量,流出土砂量,土砂濃度および流出土砂の粒径は,裸地斜面のそれらよりも大きな値を示すが,時間の経過とともに2斜面のそれらの差は小さくなる傾向にある。(2)観測データを用いて表面流の流出解析を行い,モデル中のパラメータ値の変化を通じて火山灰散布斜面および裸地斜面における流出過程の検討を行った。その結果,火山灰散布斜面の方が損失雨量とマニングの粗度係数は小さく流出発生域面積は大きいが,時間の経過とともに2斜面のパラメータ値の差は小さくなっている。(3)現地調査および流出解析の結果によると,ホートン型地表流の発生に寄与する区域は雨量の増加とともに大きくなっている。

数年以前の噴火によって形成されたテフラと現在活動している火山によって形成されたテフラにおいて粒径の違いが斜面の浸透能,粗度および土砂流出に及ぼす影響について明らかにするため,雲仙と桜島で簡易な水理試験を行った。その結果,表層の租粒化に伴って浸透能が増加する理由として細粒物質の流出と空隙率の増加が関係していること,粗粒化に伴って表面流が礫の抵抗をより大きく受けるようになり粗度が大きくなること,粗粒化に伴って浸透能および粗度が大きくなることにより流出土砂量が減少していくことが示唆された。噴火活動終息後の雲仙における火砕流堆積物斜面と,噴火活動中の桜島における火山灰堆積斜面の水理試験結果を比較すると,雲仙の火砕流堆積物斜面の方が粗粒化が進み,浸透能および粗度が大きく,流出土砂量が少なくなっていた。

桜島は1955年以来活発な火山活動を続けており, 山体頂部は火山灰や火山ガスにより植生が後退し, 非常に荒廃した状態にある。新旧の火山噴出物からなる山体は侵食されやすく, 降雨時には土石流・出水により多量の土砂が流出して いる。著者らは桜島で発生している土石流・出水の特性を明らかにするとともに, それらによる流出土砂量を予測する ために, 北岳山体の西道川と南岳山体の有村川において土石流・出水の観測を開始した。観測システムは, 超音波式水位計による土石流・出水の水位観測, ビデオカメラによる動態観測, 転倒ます型雨量計による雨量観測からなる。本論では, 1991～1996年に得られた観測結果に基づき, 西道川および有村川の流出特性, 流出土砂量について検討する。得られた結果をまとめると次のようである。(1) 西道川と有村川における土石流・出水の流出時間は, 西道川1.4～16.6時間, 有村川0.2～6.6時間であり, 西道川は有村川に比べて流出時間が長い。ピーク流量は降雨条件が同程度でも西道川より有村川で大きく, その平均値は西道川9.2m^3/s, 有村川20.6m^3/sであった。一方, 総流出量は有村川より西道川で大きく, その平均値は西道川34,868m^3,有村川19,972m^3であった。これらは, 地形, 地質・地層構造, 地表面の状態, 侵食状況などの違いに関係している。(2) 西道川水位観測地点において出水のサンプルを採取し, その土砂濃度を測定した。その結果によれば, この場合の土砂濃度は流量の変化とよく対応し, 両者の関係は両対数方眼紙上で直線で表された。(3) 土砂濃度一流量曲線が, 1993,1996年の土石流・出水に適用されるものとして, 土砂流量のハイドログラフを求め, 個々の土石流・出水の流出土砂量を算出した。1993,1996年の4年間の比流出土砂量の平均値を求めると, 西道川流域16,344rピ/k丘, 有村川流域20,363rゴ/kdとなり, 比流出土砂量は西道川より有村川で大きい。(4) 土石流・出水による総流出量の合計から土砂流出量を差し引き, 雨水流出量を求めた。年流出率(年降水量に対する雨水流出量の比)は, 西道川は11～27%の範囲で平均約16%, 有村川は西道川より小さく3～8%の範囲で平均約6%であった。

桜島の荒廃斜面で発生する表面流の週出過程について、現地調査及び流出解析の結果に基づき検討した。得られた結果は次のとおりである。 (1)表面侵食による流出土砂量、表面流出量及び流出発生域面積は雨量強度の増加に伴って大きくなる傾向にある。また、表面流出量当たりの表面侵食による流出土砂量の値(SD/SR)は侵食が進むに連れて減少傾向にある。(2)現地調査の結果、試験地における流出発生域は表層火山灰層の粒径、斜面勾配および雨量条件などの違いによって変化することが示唆された。(3)表面流の流出解析を行い、モデル中のパラメータ地の変化を通じて流出過程の検討をおこなった。その結果、マニングの粗度係数は侵食が進むにつれて大きくなる傾向を示した。この結果は表層火山灰層の粒径分布の変化とも符号した。さらに、流出発生域面積(計算値)は同(実測値)を比較的よく再現した。

桜島南東部のクロマツ林で捕獲したマツノマダラカミキリ(Monochamus alternates Hope)から抽出したマツノザイセンチュウ(以後,単にセンチュウと称す)(Bursaphelenchus xylophilus (Steiner and Buhrer) Nickle)(桜島個体群)を苗畑に植栽されているクロマツ稚樹へ接種し,枯死率,樹脂滲出能,通水阻害の発生,センチュウの樹体内での分布状況について,強病原性とされているKa-4系統と比較した。 2000年8月25日に行った接種試験では,桜島個体群接種木のうち2001年1月までに17%,2000年9月までに47%の個体が枯死した。 2000年の枯死率は,Ka-4(30%)に比べ有意に低かったが,総枯死率(59%)では有意差がなかった。いずれのセンチュウ接種木でも,樹脂滲出能が接種4日後から低下する個体が見られ,2週間後には滲出を停止した個体が見られた。 2001年7月25日に実施した接種試験では,接種木の通水阻害はKa-4で接種後4週間目に,桜島個体群では接種後6週間目に生じたが,通水阻害の発生頻度に差はなかった。接種2週間後に,センチュウはサンプルしたほとんど全ての材片から抽出された。また,材片中のセンチュウ密度は,接種後1週間目から2週間目にかけて滅少したが,その後増加に転じた。桜島個体群とKa-4間で,材片中のセンチュウ密度に有意差はなかった。これらの結果から,桜島に生育するセンチュウの病原力は,強病原性とされているKa-4ほどは強くないが,その差は樹木にあまりストレスがかからない状態でのみ枯死率に差が生じる程度であると考えられた。桜島に生息するセンチュウの病原力の低さが,桜島南東部での被害発生が大隅半島の激害発生と比較して2～3年遅れた主な原因であったとは考えられなかった。

桜島の引ノ平川および西道川流域において,噴火活動が活発な期間(1972～1992年)と穏やかな期間(1993～2004年)における火山灰の堆積状況および侵食速度について調査し,活動の盛衰およびその影響の受け方の違いによるそれらの変化について比較・検討した。得られた結果は次の通りである。(1)流域ごとにみると,噴火活動が活発な期間(1972～1992年)における年平均での火山灰層厚の平均値は,穏やかな期間(1993～2004年)におけるそれの引ノ平川流域で約1.7倍,西道川流域で約2.8倍である。火山灰の堆積層厚は両流域ともに南岳火口から離れるにつれて小さくなる傾向にある。(2)火山灰層の乾燥密度は両流域ともに噴火活動の盛衰の影響を受けて変化しており,噴火活動が活発な期間(1972～1992年)の乾燥密度は,穏やかな期間(1993～2004年)のそれに比べ大きくなっている。火山灰層の乾燥密度は両流域ともに南岳火口からの距離が大きくなるにつれて小さくなる傾向にある。(3)噴火活動が活発な期間(1972～1992年)と穏やかな期間(1993～2004年)における火山灰層厚および火山灰層の乾燥密度は,南岳火口から同程度の距離で比較すると噴火活動の影響をより大きく受けている引ノ平川流域の方が大きくなっている。(4)同程度の傾斜に対する年侵食速度を各流域で期間ごとに比較すると,噴火活動の影響をより大きく受けて荒廃している引ノ平川流域の方が大きい。年侵食速度は両流域ともに噴火活動が活発な期間(1972～1992年)の方が大きい。
