Let $E$ be a module of projective dimension one over a Noetherian ring $R$ and consider its Rees algebra $\mathcal{R}(E)$. We study this ring as a quotient of the symmetric algebra $\mathcal{S}(E)$ and consider the ideal $\mathcal{A}$ defining this quotient. In the case that $\mathcal{S}(E)$ is a complete intersection ring, we employ a duality between $\mathcal{A}$ and $\mathcal{S}(E)$ in order to study the Rees ring $\mathcal{R}(E)$ in multiple settings. In particular, when $R$ is a complete intersection ring defined by quadrics, we consider its module of K\"ahler differentials $\Omega_{R/k}$ and its associated tangent algebras., Comment: 20 pages. Let $R$ be a finitely generated $\mathbb N$-graded algebra domain over a Noetherian ring and let $I$ be a homogeneous ideal of $R$. Given $P\in Ass(R/I)$ one defines the $v$-invariant $v_P(I)$ of $I$ at $P$ as the least $c\in \mathbb N$ such that $P=I:f$ for some $f\in R_c$. A classical result of Brodmann asserts that $Ass(R/I^n)$ is constant for large $n$. So it makes sense to consider a prime ideal $P\in Ass(R/I^n)$ for all the large $n$ and investigate how $v_P(I^n)$ depends on $n$. We prove that $v_P(I^n)$ is eventually a linear function of $n$. When $R$ is the polynomial ring over a field this statement has been proved independently also by Ficarra and Sgroi in a recent preprint., Comment: the final version of this note is going to appear in PAMS

Let $I$ be a perfect ideal of height two in $R=k[x_1, \ldots, x_d]$ and let $\varphi$ denote its Hilbert-Burch matrix. When $\varphi$ has linear entries, the algebraic structure of the Rees algebra $\mathcal{R}(I)$ is well-understood under the additional assumption that the minimal number of generators of $I$ is bounded locally up to codimension $d-1$. In the first part of this article, we determine the defining ideal of $\mathcal{R}(I)$ under the weaker assumption that such condition holds only up to codimension $d-2$, generalizing previous work of P.~H.~L.~Nguyen. In the second part, we use generic Bourbaki ideals to extend our findings to Rees algebras of linearly presented modules of projective dimension one., Comment: 15 pages, comments welcome!

We consider ideals of minors of a matrix, ideals of minors of a symmetric matrix, and ideals of Pfaffians of an alternating matrix. Assuming these ideals are of generic height, we characterize the condition $G_{s}$ for these ideals in terms of the heights of other ideals of minors or Pfaffians of the same matrix. We additionally obtain bounds on the generation and concentration degrees of the Rees rings of a subclass of such ideals via specialization of the Rees rings in the generic case. We do this by proving, given sufficient height conditions on ideals of minors or Pfaffians of the matrix, the specialization of a resolution of the Rees ring in the generic case is an approximate resolution of the Rees ring in question. We end the paper by giving some explicit generation and concentration degree bounds., Comment: 40 pages

Analogues of Eakin-Sathaye theorem for reductions of ideals are proved for ${\mathbb N}^s$-graded good filtrations. These analogues yield bounds on joint reduction vectors for a family of ideals and reduction numbers for $\mathbb N$-graded filtrations. Let $(R,\mathfrak{m})$ be a $d$-dimensional Cohen-Macaulay local ring with infinite residue field. Let $I$ be an ideal of $R$ that has analytic spread $\ell(I)=d$, satisfies the $G_d$ condition, the weak Artin-Nagata property $AN_{d-2}^-$ and depth$(R/I)\geq\min\lbrace 1,\dim R/I \rbrace$. In this paper, we show that if $j_1(I) = \lambda (I/J) +\lambda [R/(J_{d-1} :_{R} I+(J_{d-2} :_{R}I+I) :_R, \mathfrak{m}^\infty)]+1$, then depth$(G(I))\geq d -1$ and $r_J(I)\leq 2$, where $J$ is a general minimal reduction of $I$. In this dissertation, we tackle the problem of describing the equations of the Rees algebra of I for I =(J,y), with J being of linear type. Throughout, such ideals are referred to as ideals of almost-linear type. In Theorem A, we give a full description of the equations of Rees algebras of ideals of the form I = (J,y), with J satisfying an homological vanishing condition. Theorem A permits us to recover and extend well-known results about families of ideals of almost-linear type due to W.V. Vasconcelos, S. Huckaba, N.V. Trung, W. Heinzer and M.-K. Kim, among others. In Theorem B, we prove that the injectivity of a single component of the canonical morphism from the symmetric algebra of I to the Rees algebra of I, propagates downwards, provided I is of almost-linear type. In particular, this result gives a partial answer to a question posed by A.B. Tchernev. Packs of examples are introduced in each section, illustrating the scope and applications of each of the results presented. We describe the equations of the Rees algebra R(I) of an equimultiple ideal I of deviation one, provided that I has a reduction J generated by a regular sequence and such that the initial forms of the elements of this sequence, except possibly the last one, are also a regular sequence in the associated graded ring of I. In particular, we prove that there is a single equation of top degree in a minimal generating set of the ideal of equations of R(I) and we relate this degree to the reduction number, recovering several known results in the context., Comment: 16 pages; to appear in the Proceedings of the American Mathematical Society

For an ideal I in a regular local ring (R,m)$ with residue class field K = R/m or a standard graded K-algebra R we show that for k >> 0 --> the Artin--Rees number of the syzygy modules of I^k as submodules of the free modules from a free resolution is constant, and thereby present the Artin-Rees number as a proper replacement of regularity in the local situation, --> the ring R/I^k is Golod, its Poincer{\'e}-Betti series is rational and the Betti numbers of the free resolution of K over R/I^k are polynomials in k of a specific degree. The first result is an extension of work of Kodiyalam and Cutkosky, Herzog & Trung on the regularity of I^k for k >> 0 from the graded situation to the local situation. The polynomiality consequence of the second result is an analog of work by Kodiyalam on the behavior of Betti numbers of the minimal free resolution of R/I^k over R.

Lance Bryant noticed in his thesis that there was a flaw in our paper "Associated graded rings of one-dimensional analytically irreducible rings", J. Algebra 304 (2006), 349-358. It can be fixed by adding a condition, called the BF condition. We discuss some equivalent conditions, and show that they are fulfilled for some classes of rings, in particular for our motivating example of semigroup rings. Furthermore we discuss the connection to a similar result, stated in more generality, by Cortadella-Zarzuela. Finally we use our result to conclude when a semigroup ring in embedding dimension at most three has an associated graded which is a complete intersection., Comment: revised argument for Lemma 1.1, results unchanged

Given a one-dimensional Cohen-Macaulay local ring we compare several sets of invariants (micro-invariants, Apery invariants and invariants of the tangent cone) and give explicit formulas relating them. We show that, in fact, they coincide if and only if the tangent cone of the ring is Cohen-Macaulay. Some explicit computations are also given, particularly in the case of semigroup rings., Comment: 20 pages

A new approach is established to computing the image of a rational map, whereby the use of approximation complexes is complemented with a detailed analysis of the torsion of the symmetric algebra in certain degrees. In the case the map is everywhere defined this analysis provides free resolutions of graded parts of the Rees algebra of the base ideal in degrees where it does not coincide with the corresponding symmetric algebra. A surprising fact is that the torsion in those degrees only contributes to the first free module in the resolution of the symmetric algebra modulo torsion. An additional point is that this contribution -- which of course corresponds to non linear equations of the Rees algebra -- can be described in these degrees in terms of non Koszul syzygies via certain upgrading maps in the vein of the ones introduced earlier by J. Herzog, the third named author and W. Vasconcelos. As a measure of the reach of this torsion analysis we could say that, in the case of a general everywhere defined map, half of the degrees where the torsion does not vanish are understood.

We describe a minimal set of generators of the defining ideal of the Rees Algebra associated to a proper parametrization of any monoid hypersurface. In the case of plane curves, we recover a known description for rational parametrizations having a syzygy of minimal degree (\mu=1). We also show that our approach can be applied to parametrizations of rational surfaces having a Hilbert-Burch resolution with \mu_1=\mu_2=1., Comment: 17 pages, amsart latex, revised version accepted for publication in the Journal Computer Aided Geometric Design.

J. Herzog, T. Hibi, N. V. Trung and X. Zheng characterize the vertex cover algebras which are standard graded. In this paper we give a simple combinatorial criterion for the standard graded property of vertex cover algebras in the case of quasi-trees. We also give an example of how this criterion works and compute the maximal degree of a minimal generator in that case.

This paper considers the following conjecture: If $R$ is an unmixed, equidimensional local ring that is a homomorphic image of a Cohen-Macaulay local ring, then for any ideal $J$ generated by a system of parameters, the Chern coefficient $e_1(J)< 0$ is equivalent to $R$ being non Cohen-Macaulay. The conjecture is established if $R$ is a homomorphic image of a Gorenstein ring, and for all universally catenary integral domains containing fields. Let A be a commutative ring and I an ideal of A with a reduction Q. In this paper we give an upper bound on the reduction number of I with respect to Q, when a suitable family of ideals in A is given. As a corollary it follows that if some ideal J containing I satisfies J^2 = QJ, then I^{v + 2} = QI^{v + 1}, where v denotes the number of generators of J / I as an A-module., Comment: 9 pages

We compare, for smooth monomial projective curves, the Castel- nuovo-Mumford regularity and the reduction number; we present an example where these two numbers differ. However, we show they coin- cide for a certain class of monomial curves. Furthermore, for smooth monomial curves we prove an inequality which is stronger than the one from the Eisenbud-Goto conjecture., Comment: 9 pages

Let $(R, m)$ be a $d$-dimensional Cohen-Macaulay local ring. In this note we prove, in a very elementary way, an upper bound of the first normalized Hilbert coefficient of a $m$-primary ideal $I\subset R$ that improves all known upper bounds unless for a finite number of cases. We also provide new upper bounds of the Hilbert functions of $I$ extending the known bounds for the maximal ideal.

We study basic properties of monomial ideals with linear quotients. It is shown that if the monomial ideal $I$ has linear quotients, then the squarefree part of $I$ and each component of $I$ as well as $\mm I$ have linear quotients, where $\mm$ is the graded maximal ideal of the polynomial ring. As an analogy to the Rearrangement Lemma of Bj\"orner and Wachs we also show that for a monomial ideal with linear quotients the admissible order of the generators can be chosen degree increasingly. As a generalization of the facet ideal of a forest, we define monomial ideals of forest type and show that they are pretty clean. This result recovers a recent result of Tuly and Villarreal about the shellability of a clutter with the free vertex property. As another consequence of this result we show that if $I$ is a monomial ideal of forest type, then Stanley's conjecture on Stanley decomposition holds for $S/I$. We also show that a clutter is totally balanced if and only if it has the free vertex property.

The supremum of reduction numbers of ideals having principal reductions is expressed in terms of the integral degree, a new invariant of the ring, which is finite provided the ring has finite integral closure. As a consequence, one obtains bounds for the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of the Rees algebra and for the Artin-Rees numbers., Comment: 18 pages

Let S be a standard N^r-graded algebra over a local ring A, and let M be a finitely generated Z^r-graded S-module. We characterize the Cohen-Macaulayness of M in terms of the vanishing of certain sheaf cohomology modules. As a consequence, we apply our result to study the Cohen-Macaulayness of multi-Rees modules (also called Rees modification). We characterize ideals whose adjoints are determined by their Rees valuations. We generalize the notion of a regular system of parameters, and prove that for ideals generated by monomials in such elements, the integral closure and adjoints are generated by monomials. We prove that the adjoints of such ideals and of all ideals in two-dimensional regular local rings are determined by their Rees valuations. We prove special cases of subadditivity of adjoints.

Recently, a method to compute the implicit equation of a parametrized hypersurface has been developed by the authors. We address here some questions related to this method. First, we prove that the degree estimate for the stabilization of the MacRae's invariant of a graded part of the symmetric algebra is optimal. Then we show that the extraneous factor that may appear in the process splits into a product a linear forms in the algebraic closure of the base field, each linear form being associated to a non complete intersection base point. Finally, we make a link between this method and a resultant computation for the case of rational plane curves and space surfaces.

The aim of this paper is to characterize simplicial complexes which have standard graded vertex cover algebras. This property has several nice consequences for the squarefree monomial ideals defining these algebras. It turns out that such simplicial complexes are closely related to a range of hypergraphs which generalize bipartite graphs and trees. These relationships allow us to obtain very general results on standard graded vertex cover algebras which cover previous major results on Rees algebras of squarefree monomial ideals., Comment: 20 pages, 6 figures
