The first descriptions of "non-specific" killing of tumor cells by lymphocytes were reported in 1973, and subsequently, the mediators of the activity were named "natural killer" (NK) cells by Rolf Kiessling and colleagues at the Karolinska Institute in 1975. The activity was detected in mice, rats, and humans that had no prior exposure to the tumors, major histocompatibility complex (MHC) antigen matching of the effectors and tumor cells was not required, and the cells responsible were distinct from MHC-restricted, antigen-specific T cells. In the ensuing five decades, research by many labs has extended knowledge of NK cells beyond an in vitro curiosity to demonstrate their in vivo relevance in host defense against tumors and microbial pathogens and their role in regulation of the immune system. This brief Perspective highlights a timeline of a few selected advancements in NK cell biology from a personal perspective of being involved in this quest.

In the centuries following Christopher Columbuss 1492 voyage to the Americas, transoceanic travel opened unprecedented pathways in global pathogen circulation. Yet no biological transfer is a single, discrete event. We use mathematical modeling to quantify historical risk of shipborne pathogen introduction, exploring the respective contributions of journey time, ship size, population susceptibility, transmission intensity, density dependence, and pathogen biology. We contextualize our results using port arrivals data from San Francisco, 1850 to 1852, and from a selection of historically significant voyages, 1492 to 1918. We offer numerical estimates of introduction risk across historically realistic ranges of journey time and ship population size, and show that both steam travel and shipping regimes that involved frequent, large-scale movement of people substantially increased risk of transoceanic pathogen circulation.

This study aims to obtain information about the educational life of the period by scanning all the news in the Karesi newspaper, which was published as the official newspaper in the Karesi province in 1915, during that year. For this purpose, all copies (51 issues) published between 28 December 1914 and 3 January 1916 were examined and 296 news about education were identified. This news was examined and seven main categories were determined as Educational Institutions, Educational Content and Methodology, Personnel Transactions, Administrative and Financial Affairs, Religious Education, Literature and Miscellaneous, and the news covering these headings were evaluated separately. It is understood from the news content that a feverish study was carried out regarding education in Balıkesir on the dates in question. In addition, despite the fact that World War I was still ongoing, it is seen that educational activities were carried out without interruption, appointments, promotions and assignments were carried out without interruption, school construction activities continued intensively and new schools were started to operate. This article highlights the divergences between the historical and modern style of playing the harpsichord, through a detailed analysis of the album 2 Pièces pour clavecin, H. 244 by Bohuslav Martinü, a leading figure of 20th century cultural life. Given the abundance of baroque compositional means, this album of solo works for harpsichord, composed in 1935, represent the perfect combination between old and new, moreover, between tradition and innovation. The predilection for rediscovering Baroque music in its pure forms began in the 1900s and continues to this day, spreading with great speed thanks to the evolution of technology and numerous historical documents. Historical treatises, writings and numerous criticisms of Baroque performances have led performers towards the closest possible performance of early works, with emphasis on proper articulation type, dynamics, freedom in phrasing, construction and fingering. The harpsichord occupies a unique place in the chronicle of the renaissance of Early music, even if it was by no means the only ancient instrument to arouse new interest in the decades preceding the early 20th century. Looking at all these major changes, modern composers such as Arnold Schoenberg, Arthur Honegger, Darius Milhaud, Igor Stravinsky, Francis Poulenc, Philip Glass, Manuel de Falla and Bohuslav Martinu have revived the effervescent music of the Baroque. The contribution offers an analysis of the unpublished pages of Gadda’s Giornale di Guerra e di prigionia (now published in the new Adelphi edition). In addition to being an important reservoir of future gaddian writing, they show at the beginning the need of the aspiring writer to establish a relationship between life and expression. In barrack 15 in Celle, during the last months of his imprisonment in 1918, Gadda completed his apprenticeship driven by the desire to understand what to do with the war experience deposited in his Journal and established the need to overcome diary writing by looking at it «al lume del dopo». The desire for that autobiographical material (Vita notata) to be organized and ‘reworked’ into writing (Pensiero notato) indicates a direction of work. The prose of war, filtering the trauma of that experience, represents the distant outcome of that path intuited by Gadda as necessary for the first time in these pages of the Giornale in which, also if confusedly, he declares his autobiographical poetics.

Objective/context: The decade of the 1920s witnessed a significant transformation in Peruvian political culture with the widespread recognition of the indigenous problem as a socioeconomic phenomenon, which paved the way for new political languages. This article aims to recover the role of myth in the Peruvian indigenista debate during this period. Specifically, it delves into the literary polemic of indigenismo in 1927, focusing on how intellectuals from Lima, Cusco, and Puno bestowed their arguments with legitimacy, effectively intertwining literature and history through the incorporation of mythical elements. Methodology: The study proposes an examination of the arguments put forth by indigenista intellectuals using the tools of conceptual history, drawing heavily from Hans Blumenberg’s work on myth. This theoretical framework helps uncover the semantic foundations of Peruvian indigenist’s language and sheds light on the historical temporalities of their political projects. Originality: This article advances a novel analysis of the intellectual field by reinterpreting primary sources related to the 1927 indigenismo polemic, reconstructing synchronic languages on national identity, and highlighting the role of myth as a significant rhetorical device. By exploring how supporters of indigenismo creatively employed myth to imagine the past and mobilize politically, this study uncovers previously overlooked conceptual shifts and their mythical underpinnings. Conclusions: The study argues that myth played a crucial role in shaping the political language of a new generation of Peruvian intellectuals. Indigenismo facilitated the emergence of novel conceptual frameworks that interrogated national identity, accelerated expectations of change, and incorporated mythical elements from indigenous experiences, including rebellions in the south and the activities of the Comité Pro-Derecho Indígena Tahuantinsuyo. Concepts such as nation and socialism were democratized and imbued with mythical significance, reflecting the diverse temporalities within the indigenista movement.

Purpose – The purpose of the paper is to showcase the significant achievements of Egypt's scientists in the 20th century across various fields of study such as medicine, physics, chemistry, biology, math, geology, astronomy and engineering. The paper highlights the struggles and successes of these scientists, as well as the cultural, social and political factors that influenced their lives and work. Design/methodology/approach – The purpose of this review is to present the scientific biographies of Egypt's most distinguished scientists, primarily in the field of Natural Sciences, in a balanced and comprehensive manner. The work is objective, honest and abstract, avoiding any bias or exaggeration. The author provides a clear and concise methodology, including a brief introduction to the scientist and their field of study, an explanation of their major contributions, the impact of their work on society, any challenges or obstacles faced during their career and their lasting legacy. The aim is to showcase the important achievements of these scientists, their impact on their respective fields and to inspire future generations to pursue scientific careers. Findings – The group of outstanding scientists in 20th century Egypt were shaped by various factors, including familial upbringing, education, society, political and cultural atmosphere and state support for scientific research. These scientists made significant contributions to various academic disciplines, including medicine, physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics and engineering. Their impact on their communities and cultures has received international acclaim, making them role models for future generations of scientists and researchers. The history of these scientists highlights the importance of educational investments and supporting scientific research to foster innovation and social progress. Company towns are integral to the urban and territorial changes wrought by the Industrial Revolution, especially in remote, resource-rich areas. Among these, villages constructed alongside dams stand out due to their profound territorial impact. This study focuses on one such unique settlement near the Ricobayo dam in Zamora, Spain, exploring its construction and environmental integration. At its inception, Ricobayo was Europe’s largest dam, its creation marked by notable feats like relocating a church, and pioneering hydraulic engineering and bridge construction, including a record-breaking design by Torroja. The adjacent company town set a precedent for creating liveable spaces for workers in isolated locales, influencing later developments. Research included on-site investigations, archival work at Iberdrola’s Historical Archive, and review of historical texts, underscoring the cultural and landscape significance of 20th-century dam settlements and the distinctive features of Ricobayo’s surroundings. The aim of the article is: to analyze her discourse about women in the Boletín de la Escuela Moderna. To do this, the issues published between 1901 and 1909 are examined. These are kept at the Fundación Ferrer i Guàrdia and at the Historical Archive of Barcelona (Spain). The documentary analysis reveals that the rationalist discourse includes two spheres: public and private. Within the private space, women’s freedom is conditioned by marriage and maternity. Rationalism seeks female emancipation through the free union between the sexes. Likewise, it is committed to a conscious, voluntary maternity and protected by public powers. In the public sphere, rationalist education and salaried work are key to the social liberation of women. The following article addresses the closest family, cultural and political environment that the historian Álvaro Jara lived from his childhood to his early youth. It is argued that Jara experienced in these contexts a strong relationship, direct and indirect, in the order of culture and politics that allowed him to incorporate a solid cultural and social capital. The energy crisis of the early 1970s briefly opened up a radically new horizon of energetic possibilities that played out differently around the world. For India, that energy crisis did not begin with the famous Arab oil embargo of 1973. Instead, like many poor oil-importing nations, it experienced the first oil shock as merely one component of a broader climate-food-energy emergency that reverberated throughout the political system. This crisis brought a twinned set of fateful changes. By June 1975, Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had resorted to imposing a constitutional dictatorship—the Emergency—for the first and only time in independent India's existence, one among a series of coups and authoritarian takeovers that swept the Global South. Less noticed was a second transformation with planetary ramifications. Rising popular expectations collided with the energy crisis to impel a state-led embrace of coal, despite elite reservations about the environmental damage that would follow. Analyzing these dynamics is crucial to understanding India's intensifying coal dependence, and its rapidly rising carbon emissions, in the decades that followed. This paper assesses the relationship between the distance between the cemento-enamel junction and alveolar crest and risk factors commonly associated with periodontitis. Eighty individuals between 28 and 92 years old with known biological sex and age were analyzed from a 20th century forensic human collection from Merida, Yucatan (Mexico). Macroscopic assessment, along with metric analysis, was employed using a probe. Ante-mortem tooth loss was positively correlated with the distance between the cemento-enamel junction and alveolar crest, as was the presence of root calculus in females. Cemento-enamel junction to alveolar crest distance is not a reliable indicator of periodontitis since it is not directly related to periodontitis-causing infectious pathogens, and since ante-mortem tooth loss can affect root exposure. This study demonstrates that a purely quantitative approach to diagnosing periodontitis in archaeological and forensic human remains can be misleading. The skeletal collection is only representative of the low socioeconomic class of Merida, and its female cohort is underrepresented. In addition, because the Xoclan collection is modern, limitations (particularly with respect to tooth wear) of the applicability of these interpretations to older archaeological remains exist. A combination of quantitative and qualitative characteristics of alveolar bone is needed to reliably diagnose periodontitis in skeletal populations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The masculine search for an idealized romantic love through urban journeys marked by chance is a recurring topic in the narrative of Julio Cortezar. We analyze and compare the film adaptations of two short stories by Cortázar, in which it is possible to recognize different modulations of this urban romance: Der gläserne Himmel (Germany, 1987), by Nina Grosse, based on the story "The Other Sky"; and Jogo subterraneo (Brazil, 2005), by Roberto Gervitz, based on "Manuscript Found in a Pocket". Both films show the versatility of Cortazar's fictions to intersect with different genres, times and contexts. At the same time, they reconfigure the asymmetry in the construction of the male protagonists and the female characters, presented in Cortázar's narrative as symbols rather than as individuals. Summary: Many people like to perceive themselves as better than previous generations: more knowledgeable, moral, tolerant and humane. Values associated with these aspects of ourselves may affect how we understand our professional forebears. In the early 20th century, some psychiatrists adopted new biomedical theories, including focal sepsis and eugenics, which resulted in inestimable harm. Detrimental clinical practices arose and were perpetuated in the context of societal values, medical ethics and other forces within and outside the medical profession. Historical understanding of the processes by which these things took place may help inform debate concerning current and future challenges of providing psychiatric care. The methods by which psychiatrists consider their predecessors may also have a bearing on how psychiatrists of the future will perceive us, the psychiatrists of the 2020s. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This retrospective on the 25th anniversary of the publication of the first structure of tubulin is shaped by my own personal experiences rather than being a strict and complete historical account of the event. It is a reflection on how working in science felt many years ago, on the struggles and the joys of reaching for the high-hanging fruit, and, ultimately, on how relevant or not our personal scientific contributions are to the broader scientific community. Writing it brought back memories of my unique and sadly lost postdoctoral advisor Ken Downing, who dreamt of this structure and brought it to fruition against all odds.

At the time of her death in October 2002, Dr. Tamara Hareven was in the process of completing a large cross-cultural examination of the global declines in the silk and textile industries. A small sample of her interview data transcripts from canuts in Lyon have, more than 20 years after her death, been translated into English and coded for themes as a pilot study of a larger data set. Six themes emerged from the participants' data. Participants sensed that the industry was disappearing, that the industry was something that was looked at as a historical artifact to be studied rather than a profession, and that there was not enough being done to encourage young people to enter the industry. Gender disparities within the industry continued to a lesser extent than before the 20th century began, but still seemed profound, especially as girls who were recruited for apprenticeships were often minors when they were moved away from their families. The apprenticeship conditions continued to be less than desirable well into the 20th century. Economically, the silk industry is often poorly paid and vulnerable to economic crises as fashion and world economics change. Large social changes often had impacts on the family life of the silk worker families. Finally, just as economics tended to ebb and flow for the silk industry, so did the labor conditions.

Industrial production of timepieces began in the Czech lands as early as the end of the 19th century. Public systems providing coordinated time data (information) began to be successfully distributed on a larger scale in Czechoslovakia by the company Jednotný čas in the first third of the 20th century. After that, the company changed its name several times, especially from the 1950s, to Elektročas/ZPA Pragotron. The company produced clocks for both the public and industry as well as split-flap displays for transport. Almost all clocks at Czechoslovak railway stations, airports, public spaces, public buildings, and offices came from this company. The mentioned clocks (their mechanical parts) required a lot of maintenance, as other devices depended on their correct functioning, e.g. clocks recording the observance of working hours in enterprises (punchclocks). The process of forming the company is interesting not only from the point of view of the implementation of time into the public civic space, but also from the point of view of details, e.g. the technological transfer of timekeeping technology from Germany to Czechoslovakia during the 20th century. Specifically, the technology known as uniform time (master clock networks taken over from the German company Elektrozeit by the Czech enterprise Elektročas). The topic of the article is, therefore, the analysis of the process of adoption of this technology and its later use in the second half of the 20th century in socialist Czechoslovakia.

In an interactive, non-linear interface and its companion essay, I invite the user to explore how computational methods and digital tools can contribute to the study of advertising histories. The interface was built keeping three tenets in mind: a) that the collection, digitisation, annotation, and visualisation of data is an act of interpretation, and must therefore be open to critique and modification; b) that scholars can use their programming skills to make the former visible and query-able by its users; and c) that this work is an intellectual pursuit in its own right. Objective/Context: This paper studies the first Chilean school newspapers led by women and the role of high school students as mediators of scientific knowledge at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th. The analysis is part of the expansion and modernization of the press and publishing industry, as well as the influence of positivism and the educational reforms that were implemented in Chile during that period, a context in which the ruling class considered scientific knowledge, both its development and access to it by the population, as a priority. Methodology: The article is based on the studies of historians of science who have understood audiences as active agents in generating new knowledge, problematizing categories such as expert, amateur and layman, and examining the types of relationships they sustained. This theoretical perspective is applied to analyzing the magazines of four women’s high schools that took advantage of the valid study plans to access the university in the period and is complemented with other sources, such as prospectuses and relevant administrative documents. Originality: The study makes visible the role of women in science and, specifically, Chilean schoolgirls in this context, which have not been studied from the perspective presented here. Conclusions: Despite the lack of attention given to this population group in terms of scientific contribution, it is shown that high school students were active readers, disseminators and producers of knowledge, managing magazines, generating networks and circulating the knowledge beyond the walls of their educational establishments.

The Bracero Program (1942–64), a bilateral agreement to regulate labor migration between the United States and Mexico, oversaw more than four million contracts enabling Mexican men to work "temporarily" in the United States. Historians of the Mexico-US borderlands and of global migration have interpreted the program through hemispheric as well as broader imperial lenses. Yet this article shows that the program's foundational ideas emerged from two decades of transatlantic exchange and circulation that cannot be contained within a single continent, nor a single framework such as imperialism. During the interwar period, Mexican politicians, intellectuals, and migrant labor activists eagerly participated in transatlantic and inter-American dialogues about migration policy, compared themselves to Italy, and admired the bilateral labor migration agreements that had recently emerged in Europe. Meanwhile, US officials heard but resisted pleas from migration scholars and the International Labor Organization to emulate European receiving countries. The two parties' differing engagements with European migration policies meant that when World War II pushed US officials to suddenly propose the agreement, Mexican actors' transatlantic knowledge inspired their participation and crucially shaped the program's design. This quartet was composed in 1946 and followed a Symphony censored by the Soviet authorities, Symphony no. 9. The first audition took place on December 16, 1946, in the Small Hall of the Moscow Conservatory, by the Beethoven Quartet, to whom the work was dedicated. This article analyses one of these materials, in order to reconstruct the history of school texts in Chile: Arturo Atria Osorio’s Silabario biológico (1925). The general objective is to study the marks of intralinguistic and extralinguistic ideology (Zamorano Aguilar 2019a and 2019b), for which we start from the communication theory applied to the historiographical fact (Zamorano Aguilar 2012 and 2022), which allows us to combine data relating to the different components that form part of the communicative act from the Jakobsonian, and of pragmatic theories. As for the former, the research demonstrates the author’s attachment to academic doctrines both in orthographic and grammatical terms, probably to GRAE 1911 or 1913. The second, on the other hand, demonstrates the indoctrinatory purpose of this type of work (Calero Vaquera 2004) and its variability according to the interests of the author of the text. Women’s emancipation in both Europe and the USA really began in the second half of the 19th century. After the end of the First World War, women acquired, in addition to the legal right to vote, the right to practice professions that were once completely forbidden to them. Among these professions that have long been forbidden for women to practice, is the profession of dentist. But things really began to become clear in the process of women’s emancipation only in the years following the end of the Second World War (1939-1945). Objective/Context: This paper studies the first Chilean school newspapers led by women and the role of high school students as mediators of scientific knowledge at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th. The analysis is part of the expansion and modernization of the press and publishing industry, as well as the in$uence of positivism and the educational reforms that were implemented in Chile during that period, a context in which the ruling class considered scientific knowledge, both its development and access to it by the population, as a priority. Methodology: The article is based on the studies of historians of science who have understood audiences as active agents in generating new knowledge, problematizing categories such as expert, amateur and layman, and examining the types of relationships they sustained. This theoretical perspective is applied to analyzing the magazines of four women's high schools that took advantage of the valid study plans to access the university in the period and is complemented with other sources, such as prospectuses and relevant administrative documents. Originality: The study makes visible the role of women in science and, specifically, Chilean schoolgirls in this context, which have not been studied from the perspective presented here. Conclusions: Despite the lack of attention given to this population group in terms of scientific contribution, it is shown that high school students were active readers, disseminators and producers of knowledge, managing magazines, generating networks and circulating the knowledge beyond the walls of their educational establishments.
