1. Differences in aerosol and cloud properties along the central California coast when winds change from northerly to southerly

Abstract: Wind reversals resulting in southerly flow along the California coast are not well understood in terms of how aerosol and cloud characteristics change. This gap is addressed using airborne field measurements enhanced with data from spaceborne remote sensing (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer), surface stations (Interagency Monitoring of Protected Visual Environments), and models (Navy Aerosol Analysis and Prediction System and Coupled Ocean–Atmosphere Mesoscale Prediction System), with a focus on submicron and supermicron aerosol, as well as cloud microphysical variables: cloud droplet number concentration (Nd), cloud optical thickness (COT), and cloud droplet effective radius (re). Southerly flow coincided with higher values of submicron aerosol concentration (Na) and mass concentrations of species representative of fine-aerosol pollution (NO3- and nss-SO42-) as well as shipping and continental emissions (V, oxalate, NH4+, Ni, OC, and EC). Supermicron Na did not change; however, heightened levels of acidic species in southerly flow coincided with reduced Cl− : Na+, suggestive of Cl− depletion in salt particles. Clouds responded correspondingly in southerly flow, with more acidic cloud water and higher levels of similar species as in the aerosol phase (e.g., NO3-, nss-SO42-, NH4+, V), along with elevated values of Nd and COT and reduced re during campaigns with similar cloud liquid water paths. Case study flights help to visualize offshore pollution gradients and highlight the sensitivity of the results to the presence of widespread smoke coverage including how associated plumes have enhanced supermicron Na. These results have implications for aerosol–cloud interactions during wind reversals and have relevance for weather, public welfare, and aviation.

Abstract: Abstract The NA48/2 experiment at CERN reports the first observation of the K ± → π 0 π 0 μ ± ν decay based on a sample of 2437 candidates with 15% background contamination collected in 2003–2004. The decay branching ratio in the kinematic region of the squared dilepton mass above 0.03 GeV2/c 4 is measured to be (0.65 ± 0.03) × 10 −6. The extrapolation to the full kinematic space, using a specific model, is found to be (3.45 ± 0.16) × 10 −6, in agreement with chiral perturbation theory predictions.

3. Randomised controlled trial of analgesia for the management of acute severe pain from traumatic injury: study protocol for the paramedic analgesia comparing ketamine and morphine in trauma (PACKMaN)

Abstract: Abstract Background Prehospital analgesia is often required after traumatic injury, currently morphine is the strongest parenteral analgesia routinely available for use by paramedics in the United Kingdom (UK) when treating patients with severe pain. This protocol describes a multi-centre, randomised, double blinded trial comparing the clinical and cost-effectiveness of ketamine and morphine for severe pain following acute traumatic injury. Methods A two arm pragmatic, phase III trial working with two large NHS ambulance services, with an internal pilot. Participants will be randomised in equal numbers to either (1) morphine or (2) ketamine by IV/IO injection. We aim to recruit 446 participants over the age of 16 years old, with a self-reported pain score of 7 or above out of 10. Randomised participants will receive a maximum of 20 mg of morphine, or a maximum of 30 mg of ketamine, to manage their pain. The primary outcome will be the sum of pain intensity difference. Secondary outcomes measure the effectiveness of pain relief and overall patient experience from randomisation to arrival at hospital as well as monitoring the adverse events, resource use and cost-effectiveness outcomes. Discussion The PACKMAN study is the first UK clinical trial addressing the clinical and cost-effectiveness of ketamine and morphine in treating acute severe pain from traumatic injury treated by NHS paramedics. The findings will inform future clinical practice and provide insights into the effectiveness of ketamine as a prehospital analgesia. Trial registration: ISRCTN, ISRCTN14124474. 4. High-energy X-ray spectrum reconstruction: solving the inverse problem from optimized multi-material transmission measurements

Abstract: Reconstructing the unknown spectrum of a given X-ray source is a common problem in a wide range of X-ray imaging tasks. For high-energy sources, transmission measurements are mostly used to recover the X-ray spectrum, as a solution to an inverse problem. While this inverse problem is usually under-determined, ill-posedness can be reduced by improving the choice of transmission measurements. A recently proposed approach optimizes custom thicknesses of calibration materials used to generate transmission measurements, employing a genetic algorithm to minimize the condition number of the system matrix before inversion. In this paper, we generalize the proposed approach to multiple calibration materials and show a much larger decrease of the condition number of the system matrix than thickness-only optimization. Additionally, the spectrum reconstruction pipeline is tested in a simulation study with a challenging high-energy Bremsstrahlung X-ray source encountered in Linear Induction Accelerators with strong scatter noise. Using this approach, a realistic noise level is obtained on measurements. A generic anti-scatter grid is designed to reduce noise to an acceptable -yet still high-noise range. A novel noise-robust reconstruction method is then presented, which shows much less sensitive to initialization than common expectation-maximization approaches, enables a precise choice of spectrum resolution and a controlled injection of prior knowledge of the X-ray spectrum.

Abstract: Abstract Background Financial distress is thought to be a key reason why small-medium enterprise (SME) owners experience higher levels of mental health conditions compared with the broader population. Business advisors who form trusting, high-quality relationships with their SME clients, are therefore well placed to: (1) help prevent/reduce key sources of financial distress, (2) better understand the business and personal needs of their clients and, (3) recognise the signs and symptoms of mental health conditions and encourage help-seeking where appropriate. The aim of this study is to compare the effectiveness of relationship building training (RBT) combined with mental health first aid (MHFA) training for business advisors with MHFA alone, on the financial and mental health of their SME-owner clients. Methods This is a single blind, two-arm randomised controlled trial. Participants will be business advisors who provide information, guidance and/or assistance to SME owner clients and are in contact with them at least 3 times a year. The business advisors will invite their SME-owner clients to complete 3 online surveys at baseline, 6- and 12-months. Business advisors will be randomised to one of two conditions, using a 1:1 allocation ratio: (1) MHFA with RBT; or (2) MHFA alone, and complete 3 online surveys at baseline, 2- and 6-months. Primary outcomes will be measured in the business advisors and consist of the quality of the relationship, stigmatizing attitude, confidence to offer mental health first aid, quality of life and provision of mental health first aid. Secondary outcomes will be measured in the SME owners and includes trust in their business advisors, the quality of this relationship, financial wellbeing, financial distress, psychological distress, help-seeking behaviour, and quality of life. To complement the quantitative data, we will include a qualitative process evaluation to examine what contextual factors impacted the reach, effectiveness, adoption, implementation, and maintenance of the training. Discussion As there is evidence for the connections between client trust, quality of relationship and financial and mental wellbeing, we hypothesise that the combined RBT and MHFA training will lead to greater improvements in these outcomes in SME owners compared with MHFA alone. Trial registration ClinicalTrials.gov : NCT04982094 . Retrospectively registered 29/07/2021. The study started in February 2021 and the recruitment is ongoing.

6. Effects of Interventions Involving Tablet-Based Speech-Generating Devices for Individuals with ASD: A Meta-Analysis

Abstract: The purpose of this review was to assess the effectiveness of tablet-based speech-generating devices (SGDs) in improving communication skills for individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). A total of 31 single-case design intervention studies involving 84 individuals with ASD were reviewed and included in the analysis. We calculated Tau-U to evaluate the impact of interventions involving tablet-based SGDs on four different communication responses: specifically, mands, intraverbals, tacts, and vocalizations. To explore potential moderating variables for mand outcomes, we used the Kruskal--Wallis one-way test. The analysis revealed that interventions utilizing tablet-based SGDs led to improvements in communication responses. Specifically, large to very large changes were observed in mand and intraverbal responses, whereas moderate changes were noted in tact responses and vocalizations. The findings of this review underscore the potential of tablet-based SGDs in enhancing communication among individuals with ASD. We discuss the findings and provide implications for future research and practice.

7. Spatially-Adaptive Hash Encodings For Neural Surface Reconstruction

Abstract: Positional encodings are a common component of neural scene reconstruction methods, and provide a way to bias the learning of neural fields towards coarser or finer representations. Current neural surface reconstruction methods use a "one-size-fits-all" approach to encoding, choosing a fixed set of encoding functions, and therefore bias, across all scenes. Current state-of-the-art surface reconstruction approaches leverage grid-based multi-resolution hash encoding in order to recover high-detail geometry. We propose a learned approach which allows the network to choose its encoding basis as a function of space, by masking the contribution of features stored at separate grid resolutions. The resulting spatially adaptive approach allows the network to fit a wider range of frequencies without introducing noise. We test our approach on standard benchmark surface reconstruction datasets and achieve state-of-the-art performance on two benchmark datasets.

8. CrossSDF: 3D Reconstruction of Thin Structures From Cross-Sections

Abstract: Reconstructing complex structures from planar cross-sections is a challenging problem, with wide-reaching applications in medical imaging, manufacturing, and topography. Out-of-the-box point cloud reconstruction methods can often fail due to the data sparsity between slicing planes, while current bespoke methods struggle to reconstruct thin geometric structures and preserve topological continuity. This is important for medical applications where thin vessel structures are present in CT and MRI scans. This paper introduces \method, a novel approach for extracting a 3D signed distance field from 2D signed distances generated from planar contours. Our approach makes the training of neural SDFs contour-aware by using losses designed for the case where geometry is known within 2D slices. Our results demonstrate a significant improvement over existing methods, effectively reconstructing thin structures and producing accurate 3D models without the interpolation artifacts or over-smoothing of prior approaches.

Abstract: We present the first numerical investigation of the method proposed in Ref. [1] to utilize gradient flow to obtain precise determinations of higher moments of PDFs from lattice QCD, circumventing power divergent mixing with lower dimensional operators. We apply this method to obtain moments of the isovector PDF of the pion using four Stabilized Wilson Fermion ensembles with $m_{\pi}\simeq 411$ MeV and lattice spacings $a \simeq 0.064, 0.077, 0.094$, and $0.12$ fm. We present preliminary results of ratios of three-point functions as a function of flow time, which can be used to extract the ratios $\left\langle x^2 \right\rangle/\left\langle x \right\rangle$ and $\left\langle x^3 \right\rangle/\left\langle x \right\rangle$. Abstract: We present Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) Band 6 (1.3 mm) observations of dense cores in three massive molecular clouds within the Central Molecular Zone (CMZ) of the Milky Way, including the Dust Ridge cloud e, Sgr C, and the 20 km s-1 cloud, at a spatial resolution of 2000 au. Among the 834 cores identified from the 1.3 mm continuum, we constrain temperatures and linewidths of 253 cores using local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) methods to fit the H2CO and/or CH3CN spectra. We determine their masses using the 1.3 mm dust continuum and derived temperatures, and then evaluate their virial parameters using the H2CO and/or CH3CN linewidths and construct the core mass functions (CMFs). We find that the contribution of external pressure is crucial for the virial equilibrium of the dense cores in the three clouds, which contrasts with the environment in the Galactic disk where dense cores are already bound even without the contribution of external pressure. We also find that the CMFs show a Salpeter-like slope in the high-mass (>~3-6 Msun) end, a change from previous works with our new temperature estimates. Combined with the possible top-heavy initial mass functions (IMFs) in the CMZ, our result suggests that gas accretion and further fragmentation may play important roles in transforming the CMF to the IMF., Comment: ApJ accepted. Abstract: The fate of the Fermi surface in bulk electron-doped Sr$_{2}$IrO$_{4}$ remains elusive, as does the origin and extension of its pseudogap phase. Here, we use high-resolution angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES) to investigate the electronic structure of Sr$_{2-x}$La$_{x}$IrO$_{4}$ up to $x=0.2$, a factor of two higher than in previous work. Our findings reveal that the Fermi surface evolves smoothly with doping. Notably, the antinodal pseudogap persists up to the highest doping level, while nodal quasiparticle coherence increases monotonously. This demonstrates that the sharp increase in Hall carrier density recently observed above $x^{*}=0.16$ [Y.-T. Hsu et al., Nature Physics 20, 1596 (2024)] cannot be attributed to the closure of the pseudogap. Further, we determine a temperature boundary of the pseudogap of $T^{*}\simeq~200~\textrm{K}$ for $x=0.2$, comparable to cuprates. Our results suggest that pseudogaps are a generic feature of doped quasi-2D antiferromagnetic Mott insulators, likely related to short range magnetic correlations., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures. Abstract: Recently, a class of long-period radio transients (LPTs) has been discovered, exhibiting emission on timescales thousands of times longer than radio pulsars. Several models had been proposed implicating either a strong magnetic field neutron star, isolated white dwarf pulsar, or a white dwarf binary system with a low-mass companion. While several models for LPTs also predict X-ray emission, no LPTs have been detected in X-rays despite extensive searches. Here we report the discovery of an extremely bright LPT (10-20 Jy in radio), ASKAP J1832-0911, which has coincident radio and X-ray emission, both with a 44.2-minute period. The X-ray and radio luminosities are correlated and vary by several orders of magnitude. These properties are unique amongst known Galactic objects and require a new explanation. We consider a $\gtrsim0.5$ Myr old magnetar with a $\gtrsim 10^{13}$ G crustal field, or an extremely magnetised white dwarf in a binary system with a dwarf companion, to be plausible explanations for ASKAP J1832-0911, although both explanations pose significant challenges to formation and emission theories. 14. Whack-a-Chip: The Futility of Hardware-Centric Export Controls

Abstract: U.S. export controls on semiconductors are widely known to be permeable, with the People's Republic of China (PRC) steadily creating state-of-the-art artificial intelligence (AI) models with exfiltrated chips. This paper presents the first concrete, public evidence of how leading PRC AI labs evade and circumvent U.S. export controls. We examine how Chinese companies, notably Tencent, are not only using chips that are restricted under U.S. export controls but are also finding ways to circumvent these regulations by using software and modeling techniques that maximize less capable hardware. Specifically, we argue that Tencent's ability to power its Hunyuan-Large model with non-export controlled NVIDIA H20s exemplifies broader gains in efficiency in machine learning that have eroded the moat that the United States initially built via its existing export controls. Finally, we examine the implications of this finding for the future of the United States' export control strategy.

15. Determining the absolute chemical abundance of nitrogen and sulfur in the quasar outflow of 3C298

Abstract: Context. Quasar outflows are key players in the feedback processes that influence the evolution of galaxies and the intergalactic medium. The chemical abundance of these outflows provides crucial insights into their origin and impact. Aims. To determine the absolute abundances of nitrogen and sulfur and the physical conditions of the outflow seen in quasar 3C298. Methods. We analyze archival spectral data from the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) for 3C298. We measure Ionic column densities from the absorption troughs and compare the results to photoionization predictions made by the Cloudy code for three different spectral energy distributions (SED), including MF87, UVsoft, and HE0238 SEDs. We also calculate the ionic column densities of excited and ground states of N iii to estimate the electron number density and location of the outflow using the Chianti atomic database. Results. The MF87, UVsoft, and HE0238 SEDs yield nitrogen and sulfur abundances at super-solar, solar, and sub-solar values, respectively, with a spread of 0.4 to 3 times solar. Additionally, we determined an electron number density of log(ne) greater than 3.3 cm-3, with the outflow possibly extending up to a maximum distance of 2.8 kpc. Conclusions. Our results indicate solar metallicity within a 60 percent uncertainty range, driven by variations in the chosen SED and photoionization models. This study underscores the importance of SEDs impact on determining chemical abundances in quasars outflows. Recent advancement in large language models (LLMs) makes it possible to translate complex, multi-modal robotic experiences into coherent, human-readable narratives. However, grounding real-world robot experiences into natural language is challenging due to many reasons, such as multi-modal nature of data, differing sample rates, and data volume. We introduce RONAR, an LLM-based system that generates natural language narrations from robot experiences, aiding in behavior announcement, failure analysis, and human interaction to recover failure. Evaluated across various scenarios, RONAR outperforms state-of-the-art methods and improves failure recovery efficiency. Our contributions include a multi-modal framework for robot experience narration, a comprehensive real-robot dataset, and empirical evidence of RONAR's effectiveness in enhancing user experience in system transparency and failure analysis.

Abstract: We study the superconducting critical fields of two-dimensional electron systems at (111)$\mathrm{LaAlO_3/KTaO_3}$ interfaces as a function of electrostatic back-gating. Our work reveals inplane critical fields of unprecedented magnitudes at oxide interfaces. By comparing the critical fields in-plane and out-of-plane we discover an extremely anisotropic superconductor with an effective thickness below 1 nm and a 12-fold violation of the Chandrasekhar-Clogston paramagnetic limit. The analysis of magneto-transport indicates that the enhancement of the critical fields is due to an exceptionally thin superconducting layer and to a paramagnetic susceptibility suppressed by spin-orbit scattering.

18. Economic evaluation of empowering older patients transitioning from hospital to home: Trial-based analysis of the 'Your Care Needs You' intervention

Abstract: Background: Transitioning from hospital to home presents significant challenges, particularly for patients aged 75 and above. The 'Your Care Needs You' (YCNY) intervention, evaluated through a cluster randomised controlled trial (cRCT), aims to empower these patients by providing essential information and skills to prepare them for being at home. This study evaluates the cost-effectiveness of the YCNY intervention compared to standard care within the UK National Health Service (NHS) over the trial's duration (90 days post-discharge). Methods: The economic evaluation utilised individual patient-level data from the YCNY cRCT. The analysis was conducted from the perspective of the NHS and Personal Social Services. The analysis calculated the adjusted mean differences in costs and Quality-Adjusted Life Years (QALYs) between the YCNY intervention and control groups. In our base case, Multilevel Mixed-Effects Generalised Linear Models (MME-GLM) were employed to account for the hierarchical data structure. Additional alternative scenarios and a probabilistic sensitivity analysis were conducted to assess the robustness of the findings. Results: The base case results indicated the YCNY intervention reduced costs ({\pounds}269) and improved outcomes (QALY gain of 0.0057). The net health benefit (NHB) of the YCNY intervention using a cost-effectiveness threshold of {\pounds}15.000/QALY was 0.0246. These findings suggest the YCNY intervention dominates usual care, with a high probability (89%) of the YCNY intervention being cost-effective at a {\pounds}15,000 per QALY threshold. The results remained robust across several alternative scenario analyses. Discussion: The YCNY intervention could represent a promising and potentially cost-effective approach for enhancing the safety and experience of older adults transitioning from hospital to home in the UK.

Abstract: The radiative cooling time of hot gas in the cool cores of many galaxy clusters and massive elliptical galaxies drops in the centre to below 100 million years. The mass cooling rates inferred from simple modelling of X-ray observations of these objects are very low, indicating that either AGN feedback is tightly balanced or that soft X-rays from cooling gas are somehow hidden from view. An intrinsic absorption model developed for application to galaxy clusters is used here to search for hidden cooling flows (HCFs) in seven nearby elliptical galaxies. Mass cooling rates of 0.5-8 solar masses per year are found in each galaxy. The absorbed cooling flow luminosity is in agreement with the observed Far Infrared (FIR) luminosity in each case, indicating absorbed emission is energetically capable of emerging in the FIR band. Abstract: Prime-Cam, one of the primary instruments for the Fred Young Submillimeter Telescope (FYST) developed by the CCAT Collaboration, will house up to seven instrument modules, with the first operating at 280 GHz. Each module will include three arrays of superconducting microwave kinetic inductance detectors (KIDs). The first KID array fabricated for the 280 GHz module uses titanium-nitride (TiN) as the superconducting material and has 3,456 individual detectors, while the other two arrays use aluminum. This paper presents the design and laboratory characterization of the 280 GHz TiN array, which is cooled below its critical temperature to ~0.1 K and read out over six RF feedlines. LED mapping, a technique for matching the measured resonant frequency of a detector to its physical position, was performed on the array so that the results can be used to lithographically trim the KID capacitors and increase the yield of the array by reducing frequency collisions. 21. Future Token Prediction -- Causal Language Modelling with Per-Token Semantic State Vector for Multi-Token Prediction

Abstract: Causal decoder-only transformer models used for generative language modelling, such as Generative Pre-trained Transformers (GPT), are trained to predict the next token in a sequence based only on its previous tokens. Despite this simple training objective, they have proved to be powerful AI tools. However, only predicting the next token results in top layer embedding vectors that are highly token-focused. There may be benefits in generating embedding vectors at each token position that better capture the overall meaning of longer sequences of future text. Recent studies matching brain scans with deep language models suggest that humans also predict upcoming words when listening or reading but consider multiple future tokens rather than just one. This research investigates a new pretraining method called Future Token Prediction (FTP). In FTP, a large transformer encoder generates top layer embedding vectors for each token position, which, instead of being passed to a language head, are linearly and expansively projected to a pseudo-sequence, which is cross attended to by a small transformer decoder to predict the next N tokens forward from that position in the sequence. The top layer embedding vectors from FTP models exhibit distinct properties compared to those from standard GPT models, varying smoothly along a text sequence as measured by cosine similarity between adjacent tokens. Text generated by FTP models show improved topic coherence compared to standard GPT-like models trained with the same prediction perplexity for the next single token. The vectors are shown to better represent the topic of text based on the results of text classification examples. Abstract: The Central Molecular Zone (CMZ) is the largest reservoir of dense molecular gas in the Galaxy and is heavily obscured in the optical and near-IR. We present an overview of the far-IR dust continuum, where the molecular clouds are revealed, provided by Herschel in the inner 40\deg($|l| <$ 20\deg) of the Milky Way with a particular focus on the CMZ. We report a total dense gas ($N$(H$_2$) $> 10^{23}$ cm$^{-2}$) CMZ mass of M=$2\substack{+2 \\ -1} \times 10^7$ M$_{\odot}$ and confirm that there is a highly asymmetric distribution of dense gas, with about 70-75% at positive longitudes. We create and publicly release complete fore/background-subtracted column density and dust temperature maps in the inner 40\deg ($|l| <$ 20\deg) of the Galaxy. We find that the CMZ clearly stands out as a distinct structure, with an average mass per longitude that is at least $3\times$ higher than the rest of the inner Galaxy contiguously from 1.8\deg $> \ell >$ -1.3\deg. This CMZ extent is larger than previously assumed, but is consistent with constraints from velocity information. The inner Galaxy's column density peaks towards the SgrB2 complex with a value of about 2 $\times$ 10$^{24}$ cm$^{-2}$, and typical CMZ molecular clouds are about N(H$_2$)=10$^{23}$ cm$^{-2}$. Typical CMZ dust temperatures range from about $12-35$ K with relatively little variation. Abstract: The Central Molecular Zone (CMZ) is the way station at the heart of our Milky Way Galaxy, connecting gas flowing in from Galactic scales with the central nucleus. Key open questions remain about its 3-D structure, star formation properties, and role in regulating this gas inflow. In this work, we identify a hierarchy of discrete structures in the CMZ using column density maps from Paper I (Battersby et al., submitted). We calculate the physical ($N$(H$_2$), $T_{\rm{dust}}$, mass, radius) and kinematic (HNCO, HCN, and HC$_3$N moments) properties of each structure as well as their bolometric luminosities and star formation rates (SFRs). We compare these properties with regions in the Milky Way disk and external galaxies. Despite the fact that the CMZ overall is well below the Gao-Solomon dense gas star-formation relation (and in modest agreement with the Schmidt-Kennicutt relation), individual structures on the scale of molecular clouds generally follow these star-formation relations and agree well with other Milky Way and extragalactic regions. We find that individual CMZ structures require a large external pressure ($P_e$/k$_B$ $> 10^{7-9}$ K cm$^{-3}$) to be considered bound, however simple estimates suggest that most CMZ molecular-cloud-sized structures are consistent with being in pressure-bounded virial equilibriuim. Abstract: A comprehensive 3-D model of the central 300 pc of the Milky Way, the Central Molecular Zone (CMZ) is of fundamental importance in understanding energy cycles in galactic nuclei, since the 3-D structure influences the location and intensity of star formation, feedback, and black hole accretion. Current observational constraints are insufficient to distinguish between existing 3-D models. Dust extinction is one diagnostic tool that can help determine the location of dark molecular clouds relative to the bright Galactic Center emission. By combining Herschel and Spitzer observations, we developed three new dust extinction techniques to estimate the likely near/far locations for each cloud in the CMZ. We compare our results to four geometric CMZ orbital models. Our extinction methods show good agreement with each other, and with results from spectral line absorption analysis from Walker et al. (submitted). Our near/far results for CMZ clouds are inconsistent with a projected version of the Sofue (1995) two spiral arms model, and show disagreement in position-velocity space with the Molinari et al. (2011) closed elliptical orbit. Our results are in reasonable agreement with the Kruijssen et al. (2015) open streams. We find that a simplified toy-model elliptical orbit which conserves angular momentum shows promising fits in both position-position and position-velocity space. Abstract: The Milky Way's Central Molecular Zone (CMZ) is the largest concentration of dense molecular gas in the Galaxy, the structure of which is shaped by the complex interplay between Galactic-scale dynamics and extreme physical conditions. Understanding the 3-D geometry of this gas is crucial as it determines the locations of star formation and subsequent feedback. We present a catalogue of clouds in the CMZ using Herschel data. Using archival data from the APEX and MOPRA CMZ surveys, we measure averaged kinematic properties of the clouds at 1mm and 3mm. We use archival ATCA data of the H$_{2}$CO (1$_{1,0}$ - 1$_{1,1}$) 4.8 GHz line to search for absorption towards the clouds, and 4.85 GHz GBT C-band data to measure the radio continuum emission. We measure the absorption against the continuum to provide new constraints for the line-of-sight positions of the clouds relative to the Galactic centre, and find a highly asymmetric distribution, with most clouds residing in front of the Galactic centre. The results are compared with different orbital models, and we introduce a revised toy model of a vertically-oscillating closed elliptical orbit. We find that most models describe the PPV structure of the gas reasonably well, but find significant inconsistencies in all cases regarding the near vs. far placement of individual clouds. 27. A general framework for probabilistic model uncertainty

Abstract: Existing approaches to model uncertainty typically either compare models using a quantitative model selection criterion or evaluate posterior model probabilities having set a prior. In this paper, we propose an alternative strategy which views missing observations as the source of model uncertainty, where the true model would be identified with the complete data. To quantify model uncertainty, it is then necessary to provide a probability distribution for the missing observations conditional on what has been observed. This can be set sequentially using one-step-ahead predictive densities, which recursively sample from the best model according to some consistent model selection criterion. Repeated predictive sampling of the missing data, to give a complete dataset and hence a best model each time, provides our measure of model uncertainty. This approach bypasses the need for subjective prior specification or integration over parameter spaces, addressing issues with standard methods such as the Bayes factor. Predictive resampling also suggests an alternative view of hypothesis testing as a decision problem based on a population statistic, where we directly index the probabilities of competing models. Abstract: We present the results of a search for gravitational-wave transients associated with core-collapse supernova SN 2023ixf, which was observed in the galaxy Messier 101 via optical emission on 2023 May 19th, during the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA 15th Engineering Run. We define a five-day on-source window during which an accompanying gravitational-wave signal may have occurred. No gravitational waves have been identified in data when at least two gravitational-wave observatories were operating, which covered $\sim 14\%$ of this five-day window. We report the search detection efficiency for various possible gravitational-wave emission models. Considering the distance to M101 (6.7 Mpc), we derive constraints on the gravitational-wave emission mechanism of core-collapse supernovae across a broad frequency spectrum, ranging from 50 Hz to 2 kHz where we assume the GW emission occurred when coincident data are available in the on-source window. Considering an ellipsoid model for a rotating proto-neutron star, our search is sensitive to gravitational-wave energy $1 \times 10^{-5} M_{\odot} c^2$ and luminosity $4 \times 10^{-5} M_{\odot} c^2/\text{s}$ for a source emitting at 50 Hz. These constraints are around an order of magnitude more stringent than those obtained so far with gravitational-wave data. The constraint on the ellipticity of the proto-neutron star that is formed is as low as $1.04$, at frequencies above $1200$ Hz, surpassing results from SN 2019ejj., Comment: Main paper: 6 pages, 4 figures and 1 table. 29. Semiparametric Bayesian Inference for a Conditional Moment Equality Model

Abstract: Conditional moment equality models are regularly encountered in empirical economics, yet they are difficult to estimate. These models map a conditional distribution of data to a structural parameter via the restriction that a conditional mean equals zero. Using this observation, I introduce a Bayesian inference framework in which an unknown conditional distribution is replaced with a nonparametric posterior, and structural parameter inference is then performed using an implied posterior. The method has the same flexibility as frequentist semiparametric estimators and does not require converting conditional moments to unconditional moments. Importantly, I prove a semiparametric Bernstein-von Mises theorem, providing conditions under which, in large samples, the posterior for the structural parameter is approximately normal, centered at an efficient estimator, and has variance equal to the Chamberlain (1987) semiparametric efficiency bound. As byproducts, I show that Bayesian uncertainty quantification methods are asymptotically optimal frequentist confidence sets and derive low-level sufficient conditions for Gaussian process priors. The latter sheds light on a key prior stability condition and relates to the numerical aspects of the paper in which these priors are used to predict the welfare effects of price changes.

30. Combining Hough Transform and Deep Learning Approaches to Reconstruct ECG Signals From Printouts

Abstract: This work presents our team's (SignalSavants) winning contribution to the 2024 George B. Moody PhysioNet Challenge. The Challenge had two goals: reconstruct ECG signals from printouts and classify them for cardiac diseases. Our focus was the first task. Despite many ECGs being digitally recorded today, paper ECGs remain common throughout the world. Digitising them could help build more diverse datasets and enable automated analyses. However, the presence of varying recording standards and poor image quality requires a data-centric approach for developing robust models that can generalise effectively. Our approach combines the creation of a diverse training set, Hough transform to rotate images, a U-Net based segmentation model to identify individual signals, and mask vectorisation to reconstruct the signals. We assessed the performance of our models using the 10-fold stratified cross-validation (CV) split of 21,799 recordings proposed by the PTB-XL dataset. On the digitisation task, our model achieved an average CV signal-to-noise ratio of 17.02 and an official Challenge score of 12.15 on the hidden set, securing first place in the competition. Our study shows the challenges of building robust, generalisable, digitisation approaches. Such models require large amounts of resources (data, time, and computational power) but have great potential in diversifying the data available.

31. CLIMB: Language-Guided Continual Learning for Task Planning with Iterative Model Building

Abstract: Intelligent and reliable task planning is a core capability for generalized robotics, requiring a descriptive domain representation that sufficiently models all object and state information for the scene. We present CLIMB, a continual learning framework for robot task planning that leverages foundation models and execution feedback to guide domain model construction. CLIMB can build a model from a natural language description, learn non-obvious predicates while solving tasks, and store that information for future problems. We demonstrate the ability of CLIMB to improve performance in common planning environments compared to baseline methods. We also develop the BlocksWorld++ domain, a simulated environment with an easily usable real counterpart, together with a curriculum of tasks with progressing difficulty for evaluating continual learning. Abstract: Cooling flows are common in galaxy clusters which have cool cores. The soft X-ray emission below 1 keV from the flows is mostly absorbed by cold dusty gas within the central cooling sites. Further evidence for this process is presented here through a more detailed analysis of the nearby Centaurus cluster and some additional clusters. Predictions of JWST near and mid-infrared spectra from cooling gas are presented. [NeVI] emission at 7.65 micron should be an important diagnostic of gas cooling between 6 and 1.5 times 10^5 K. The emerging overall picture of hidden cooling flows is explored. The efficiency of AGN feedback in reducing the total cooling rate in cool cores is shown to be above 50 percent for many clusters but is rarely above 90 per cent. The reduction is mostly in outer gas. Abstract: The magnetar SGR 1935+2154 is the only known Galactic source of fast radio bursts (FRBs). FRBs from SGR 1935+2154 were first detected by CHIME/FRB and STARE2 in 2020 April, after the conclusion of the LIGO, Virgo, and KAGRA Collaborations' O3 observing run. Here we analyze four periods of gravitational wave (GW) data from the GEO600 detector coincident with four periods of FRB activity detected by CHIME/FRB, as well as X-ray glitches and X-ray bursts detected by NICER and NuSTAR close to the time of one of the FRBs. We do not detect any significant GW emission from any of the events. Instead, using a short-duration GW search (for bursts $\leq$ 1 s) we derive 50\% (90\%) upper limits of $10^{48}$ ($10^{49}$) erg for GWs at 300 Hz and $10^{49}$ ($10^{50}$) erg at 2 kHz, and constrain the GW-to-radio energy ratio to $\leq 10^{14} - 10^{16}$. We also derive upper limits from a long-duration search for bursts with durations between 1 and 10 s. Abstract: Analytic continuation from $(3,1)$ signature Minkowski to $(2,2)$ signature Klein space has emerged as a useful tool for the understanding of scattering amplitudes and flat space holography. Under this continuation, past and future null infinity merge into a single boundary ($\mathcal{J}$) which is the product of a null line with a $(1,1)$ signature torus. The Minkowskian $\mathcal{S}$-matrix continues to a Kleinian $\mathcal{S}$-vector which in turn may be represented by a Poincar\'e-invariant vacuum state $|\mathcal{C}\rangle$ in the Hilbert space built on $\mathcal{J}$. $|\mathcal{C} \rangle$ contains all information about $\mathcal{S}$ in a novel, repackaged form. 35. Rapid Computation of the Assembly Index of Molecular Graphs

Abstract: Determining the assembly index of a molecule, which aims to find the least number of steps required to make its molecular graph by recursively using previously made structures, is a novel problem seeking to quantify the minimum number of constraints required to build a given molecular graph which has wide applications from biosignature detection to cheminformatics including drug discovery. In this article, we consider this problem from an algorithmic perspective and propose an exact algorithm to efficiently find assembly indexes of large molecules including some natural products. To achieve this, we start by identifying the largest possible duplicate sub-graphs during the sub-graph enumeration process and subsequently implement a dynamic programming strategy with a branch and bound heuristic to exploit already used duplicates and reject impossible states in the enumeration. To do so efficiently, we introduce the assembly state data-structure as an array of edge-lists that keeps track of the graph fragmentation, by keeping the last fragmented sub-graph as its first element. By a precise manipulation of this data-structure we can efficiently perform each fragmentation step and reconstruct an exact minimal pathway construction for the molecular graph. These techniques are shown to compute assembly indices of many large molecules with speed and memory efficiency. Abstract: The Offshore Wind (OSW) industry is experiencing significant expansion, resulting in increased Operations \& Maintenance (O\&M) costs. Intelligent alarm systems offer the prospect of swift detection of component failures and process anomalies, enabling timely and precise interventions that could yield reductions in resource expenditure, as well as scheduled and unscheduled downtime. This paper introduces an innovative approach to tackle this challenge by capitalising on Large Language Models (LLMs). We present a specialised conversational agent that incorporates statistical techniques to calculate distances between sentences for the detection and filtering of hallucinations and unsafe output. This potentially enables improved interpretation of alarm sequences and the generation of safer repair action recommendations by the agent. Preliminary findings are presented with the approach applied to ChatGPT-4 generated test sentences. The limitation of using ChatGPT-4 and the potential for enhancement of this agent through re-training with specialised OSW datasets are discussed.

Abstract: The isotopic compositions of samples returned from Cb-type asteroid Ryugu and Ivuna-type (CI) chondrites are distinct from other carbonaceous chondrites, which has led to the suggestion that Ryugu and CI chondrites formed in a different region of the accretion disk, possibly around the orbits of Uranus and Neptune. We show that, like for Fe, Ryugu and CI chondrites also have indistinguishable Ni isotope anomalies, which differ from those of other carbonaceous chondrites. We propose that this unique Fe and Ni isotopic composition reflects different accretion efficiencies of small FeNi metal grains among the carbonaceous chondrite parent bodies. The CI chondrites incorporated these grains more efficiently, possibly because they formed at the end of the disk's lifetime, when planetesimal formation was also triggered by photoevaporation of the disk. Isotopic variations among carbonaceous chondrites may thus reflect fractionation of distinct dust components from a common reservoir, implying CI chondrites and Ryugu may have formed in the same region of the accretion disk as other carbonaceous chondrites., Comment: Published open access in Science Advances

38. Partial-to-Full Registration based on Gradient-SDF for Computer-Assisted Orthopedic Surgery

Abstract: In computer-assisted orthopedic surgery (CAOS), accurate pre-operative to intra-operative bone registration is an essential and critical requirement for providing navigational guidance. This registration process is challenging since the intra-operative 3D points are sparse, only partially overlapped with the pre-operative model, and disturbed by noise and outliers. The commonly used method in current state-of-the-art orthopedic robotic system is bony landmarks based registration, but it is very time-consuming for the surgeons. To address these issues, we propose a novel partial-to-full registration framework based on gradient-SDF for CAOS. The simulation experiments using bone models from publicly available datasets and the phantom experiments performed under both optical tracking and electromagnetic tracking systems demonstrate that the proposed method can provide more accurate results than standard benchmarks and be robust to 90% outliers. Importantly, our method achieves convergence in less than 1 second in real scenarios and mean target registration error values as low as 2.198 mm for the entire bone model. Finally, it only requires random acquisition of points for registration by moving a surgical probe over the bone surface without correspondence with any specific bony landmarks, thus showing significant potential clinical value.

Abstract: Significant advancements have been made in understanding the physics of transition-edge sensors (TESs) over the past decade. However, key questions remain, particularly a detailed understanding of the current-dependent resistance of these detectors when biased within their superconducting transition. We use scanning superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) microscopy (SSM) to image the local diamagnetic response of aluminum-manganese alloy (Al-Mn) transition-edge sensors (TESs) near their critical temperature of approximately 175 mK. By doing so, we gain insights into how the device dimensions influence TES transition width, which in turn affects device operation and informs optimal device design. Our images reveal that the Al-Mn thin film near the niobium (Nb) leads exhibits an excess diamagnetic response at temperatures several milli-Kelvin (mK) higher than the bulk of the film farther from the contacts. A possible origin of this behavior is a longitudinal proximity effect between the Nb and Al-Mn where the TES acts as a weak link between superconducting leads. We discuss how this effect shapes the temperature dependence of the resistance as the spacing between the leads decreases. 40. Radial Evolution of ICME-Associated Particle Acceleration Observed by Solar Orbiter and ACE

Abstract: On 2022 March 10, a coronal mass ejection (CME) erupted from the Sun, resulting in Solar Orbiter observations at 0.45 au of both dispersive solar energetic particles arriving prior to the interplanetary CME (ICME) and locally accelerated particles near the ICME-associated shock structure as it passed the spacecraft on 2022 March 11. This shock was later detected on 2022 March 14 by the Advanced Composition Explorer (ACE), which was radially aligned with Solar Orbiter, at 1 au. Ion composition data from both spacecraft -- via the Solar Orbiter Energetic Particle Detector/ Suprathermal Ion Spectrograph (EPD/SIS) and the Ultra Low Energy Isotope Spectrometer (ULEIS) on ACE -- allows for in-depth analysis of the radial evolution of species-dependent ICME shock-associated acceleration processes for this event. We present a study of the ion spectra observed at 0.45 and 1 au during both the gradual solar energetic particle (SEP) and energetic storm particle (ESP) phases of the event. We find that the shapes of the spectra seen at each spacecraft have significant differences that were likely caused by varying shock geometry: Solar Orbiter spectra tend to lack spectral breaks, and the higher energy portions of the ACE spectra have comparable average flux to the Solar Orbiter spectra. Through an analysis of rigidity effects on the spectral breaks observed by ACE, we conclude that the 1 au observations were largely influenced by a suprathermal pool of $\mathrm{He}^{+}$ ions that were enhanced due to propagation along a stream interaction region (SIR) that was interacting with the ICME at times of observation., Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures, submitted to A&A

Abstract: The logistic equation is ubiquitous in applied mathematics as a minimal model of saturating growth. Here, we examine a generalisation of the logistic model to fitness-structured populations, motivated by examples that range from the ageing of individuals in a species to immune cell exhaustion by cancerous tissue. Through exploration of a range of concrete examples and a general analysis of polynomial fitness functions, we derive necessary and sufficient conditions for the dependence of the kinetics on structure to result in closed, low-dimensional moment equations that are exact. Further, we showcase how coarse-grained moment information can be used to elucidate the details of structured dynamics, with immediate potential for model selection and hypothesis testing.

Abstract: The Mittelman-di Cicco-Walker (MDW) H$\alpha$ Sky Survey is an autonomously-operated and ongoing all-sky imaging survey in the narrowband H$\alpha$ wavelength. The survey was founded by amateur astronomers, and is presented here in its first stage of refinement for rigorous scientific use. Each field is exposed through an H$\alpha$ filter with a 3nm bandwidth for a total of four hours, with a pixel scale of 3.2 arcsec. Here, we introduce the first Data Release of the MDW H$\alpha$ Survey (Data Release 0, or DR0), spanning 238 fields in the region of Orion (~3100 deg$^2$). DR0 includes: calibrated mean fields, star-removed mean fields, a point source catalog matched to Data Release 1 of the Panoramic Survey Telescope and Rapid Response System (Pan-STARRS1) and the INT Galactic Plane Survey (IGAPS), and mosaics.

Abstract: Metal-fused filament fabrication (MF3), which is a variation of the conventional fused filament fabrication (FFF), has recently gained interest due to its distinctive process flexibility and rapid prototyping capability to produce metallic parts. With respect to the additive manufacturing (AM) of aluminum alloys, most efforts have been centered on laser powder bed fusion technologies, with limited activities focused on binder-based processes due to challenges in the sintering of aluminum powders. With respect to MF3, one challenge for fabricating metallic components is the appropriate selection of a binder mixture, enabling the extrusion of a filament with high metallic volume content. In this paper, a mixture of biodegradable aliphatic polyester thermoplastic is used as a binder phase to act as the carrier for AlSi10Mg alloy powders.

44. A Strengths Awareness Pilot for an Australian University Mentoring Program

Abstract: Strengths-based initiatives for university students to identify and develop their strengths are increasing in popularity in the tertiary sector. An understanding of strengths provides students with greater resilience in their transition in and out of university. While such strengths-based initiatives have been studied among first-year student populations at large universities in the United States, scant research has been conducted on strengths development in the Australian tertiary sector. This mixed methods study evaluates the efficacy of the use of the CliftonStrengths Assessment and targeted strengths workshops on a group of mentors and mentees within a peer mentoring program at a university in Australia. Quantitative analysis indicated increases in strengths awareness. Qualitative analysis also revealed participants could positively view their strengths, identify a plan for future strengths use, and view others and themselves in a new light. This study served as a base for further research into strengths development at Australian universities.

45. Occupational Therapy Practitioners' Expectations of Entry-Level Doctorate versus Master's Graduates

Abstract: The dual-entry nature of occupational therapy has been a point of discussion for many years with explorations into the profession's support for the different degree programs and definitions of entry-level practice being the primary foci in the literature. There has been no comparison of the expectations of occupational therapy educators and practitioners of entry-level doctorate and master's students upon graduation despite differences in curricula and emphasis on advanced skills. This study utilized a descriptive quantitative survey to ask current educators and practitioners (n=124) to indicate their level of expectations of the two types of graduates for sixteen different clinical and professional skills and the level of expected mentorship upon graduation. Practitioners held the two groups of new graduates to the same expectations in all categories and anticipated they would need the same level of mentorship upon graduation. Despite equal expectations in all categories, there were six categories where at least 30% of participants indicated they held higher expectations of entry-level doctorate new graduates. These categories aligned with the doctoral capstone areas of foci. These results can set the foundation for further studies examining the congruence between expectations and new graduate readiness for the field and inform current curricula to prepare students to meet the professional expectations of their supervisors and colleagues.

46. Translational Research Approaches in Land-Grant Institutions: A Case Study of the REDI Movement

Abstract: In this case study we explore the concept of translational research: specifically, how common tools were employed in the context of the translational research process to design and implement a formal intervention to address racism at the individual and structural level. This approach to translational research focuses on the implementation of evidence-based interventions to address issues in communities, schools, and other organizations and is ideally suited to support researchers and practitioners in the nation's land-grant institutions. We discuss the suitability of translational research as an approach to identifying and resolving issues and implications for training and day-to-day operations of translational research organizations. Finally, we point to the necessity of incorporating principles of equity and engagement in the translational research process.

47. Writing Enjoyment among EFL Postgraduate Students in Indonesia: The Interplay between Students' Writing Self-Efficacy and Research Literacy and Teachers' Immediacy and Clarity

Abstract: The present study aims to investigate the interplays among students' writing self-efficacy, students' research literacy, teachers' immediacy, and teachers' clarity in facilitating the writing enjoyment of EFL postgraduate students in Indonesia. This quantitative research was designed by using Partial Least Square-Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) as a model analysis. A questionnaire of 40 items adapted from previous studies was used to measure the variables. One hundred fifty EFL postgraduate students in Indonesian universities filled out the questionnaire. Path analyses demonstrated positive relationships among the variables, meaning that students' writing self-efficacy and research literacy and teachers' immediacy and clarity impacted writing enjoyment. Nevertheless, the findings demonstrated that correlations between teachers' immediacy, teachers' clarity and students' writing enjoyment are not statistically significant, indicating that teacher-related factors, namely teachers' immediacy and clarity, may not have significantly impacted students' writing enjoyment. The pedagogical implications and future research directions are examined further.

49. Paraeducator Perspectives on Supporting Students with Autism Spectrum Disorder: Implications for Improving Paraeducator Training and Supervision

Abstract: The number of students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in PreK-12 schools has increased over time. However, paraeducators supporting students with ASD typically receive limited training and are unprepared for their roles. As part of a larger survey study, we conducted a content analysis of responses by paraeducators in one U.S. state across three open-ended survey items focused on their skills, training, and challenges specific to supporting students with ASD. Despite reporting limited preparation and training, paraeducators described a variety of knowledge, skills, and dispositions related to supporting students with ASD, many of which resulted from their practical experiences as opposed to school-based training and supervision. Our findings also confirm that paraeducators face a number of challenges in collaborating with other educational professionals and families and supporting students with ASD across settings due to limited training and preparation. We present implications for developing paraeducator training programs in the area of ASD and future research directions.

50. More than Steepness: Introducing Slope Quantitatively with Interactive Dynamic Representations

Abstract: We report on a long-term collaboration with ninth-grade mathematics teachers at a linguistically diverse high school in which we examined the intersection between mathematics and language, and how language and mathematical thinking can be developed together in a multilingual setting. We co-designed lessons that promoted conceptual understanding, increased students' access to grade level mathematics and created opportunities for students who are classified as English learners to participate in discussions. Our content focus was linear and exponential rates of change. In this article, we focus on linear rate of change and its connection to slope. After identifying three distinct meanings for and uses of slope in a ninth-grade mathematics textbook: (a) slope as steepness, (b) slope as rate of change, and (c) slope as a property of collinearity (presented in this order) and observing student interactions around slope concepts, we considered whether it may be more beneficial for students, particularly emergent multilingual students, to develop a robust quantitative understanding of slope first, then introduce the other two meanings of slope as an application of rate of change. To achieve this, we created a series of lessons incorporating dynamic interactive technology and mathematical language routines. We share three of these lessons in this article and include a classroom vignette illustrating the classroom interactions that were achieved through using our first Desmos activity.
