Abstract: International audience; Monolayers of assembled nano-objects with a controlled degree of disorder hold interest in many optical applications, including photovoltaics, light emission, sensing, and structural coloration. Controlled disorder can be achieved through either top-down or bottom-up approaches, but the latter is more suited to large-scale, low-cost fabrication. Disordered colloidal monolayers can be assembled through evaporatively driven convective assembly, a bottom-up process with a wide range of parameters impacting particle placement. Motivated by the photonic applications of such monolayers, in this review we discuss the quantification of monolayer disorder, and the assembly methods that have been used to produce them. We review the impact of particle and solvent properties, as well as the use of substrate patterning, to create the desired spatial distributions of particles.

Abstract: International audience; Herein we investigate the technologically relevant blend of the ferroelectric polymer poly(vinylidene fluorideco-trifluoroethylene), P(VDF-co-TrFE), with the semiconducting polymer poly(3-hexylthiophene), P3HT, by means of a combination of Scanning Probe Microscopy techniques, namely Atomic Force Microscopy, Conductive Force Microscopy, Kelvin Probe Force Microscopy and Piezoresponse Force Microscopy. This combination proves to be a powerful tool for the non-destructive morphological reconstruction of multifunctional nano-structured thin films, as those under study. Each modality allows discerning the two blend constituents based on their functionality, and, additionally, probes layers of different thickness with respect to the films surface. The depth-dependent information that is collected allows a qualitative reconstruction of the blend's composition and morphology both in-plane and out-of-plane of the film. We demonstrate that P3HT exhibits the tendency to reside the film surface at an almost constant composition of 15%, independent of blend's composition. Increasing the P3HT content in the blend results in the segregation of P3HT at the upper layers of the films, partially buried below a P(VDF-co-TrFE) superficial layer. The depletion of P3HT from the substrate/film interface is reflected by the poor existence of conducting pathways that connect the top and bottom planes of the film. The three-dimensional morphology of this polymer blend that is revealed thanks to the employed techniques deviates substantially from the ideal morphology proposed for the efficient performance of the targeted memory devices.

Abstract: This work is dedicated to a multi-scale modelling of coupled diffusion and reaction in a porous microelectrode operating in the Direct Electron Transfer mode. The pore-scale physico-electrochemical unsteady model is developed considering the oxygen reduction, catalyzed by an enzyme coating the pores of the electrode, coupled to the diffusion of oxygen and mass balance of enzymes. This model is formally upscaled to obtain an original closed unsteady macroscopic model operating at the electrode scale, together with the associated closure providing the effective diffusivity tensor. A validation of this model is carried out from a comparison with the solution of the initial 3D pore-scale governing equations considering the bilirubin oxydase as the catalyst. The relevance and accuracy of the macroscale model are proved allowing a considerable simulation speedup. It is further employed to successfully predict experimental voltammetry results obtained with porous gold electrodes functionnalized with a bilirubin oxidase mutant (BOD S362C). This model represents a breakthrough by providing an operational simple way of understanding and further optimizing porous electrodes functioning in DET mode.

Abstract: International audience; ConspectusThe properties of a material depend upon its physical characteristics, one of these being its crystalline state. Next generation solid-state technologies will integrate crystalline oxides into thermal sensitive processes and composite materials. Crystallization of amorphous phases of metal oxides in the solid state typically requires substantial energy input to induce the amorphous to crystalline phase transformation. In the case of silica, the transformation to α-quartz in a furnace occurs above 1300 °C and that of titania, above 400 °C. These calcination processes are costly in energy but also often degrade complex material architectures or compositions.Thus, low temperature crystallization techniques are required that preserve macro- and mesostructures and complex elemental composition (e.g., organic-, metal-, and semiconductor-metal oxide hybrids/composites). Some solution-based techniques exist to directly fabricate crystalline metal oxides. However, these are not always compatible with the specificities of the system or industrial constraints. A postsynthetic, solid-state approach that reduces crystallization temperature in metal oxides is metal-induced crystallization (MIC).MIC is the introduction of catalytic amounts of a cation, which can be an s-block, p-block, or d-block cation, that migrates through the solid metal oxide lattice. The cation is thought to temporarily break metal oxide bonds, allowing [MOx] polyhedra to rotate and reform bonds with neighboring [MOx] groups in a lower energy crystalline phase. Depending on the system, the cation can favor or defavor the formation of a particular crystalline phase, providing a means to tune the purity and crystalline phase ratios. An advantage of MIC is that, although the crystallization occurs in the solid state, the crystallization process can be accomplished for particle suspensions in liquid media. In this case, the energy required to induce the crystallization can come from, for example, a microwave or an ultrasound bath. The crystallization of particles in suspension avoids aggregation from particle–particle sintering. In the case of thin films, the energy for crystallization typically comes from a laser or calcination.MIC is only recently being used as a low temperature metal oxide crystallization technique, despite being widely used in the semiconductor industry. Here, the mechanism and previous studies in MIC are presented for titania, silica, and other oxides. The beauty of this technique is that it is extremely easy to employ: cations can be incorporated into the system postsynthetically and then are often expelled from the lattice upon phase conversion. We expect MIC to enrich materials for photochromic, optoelectronic, catalyst, biological, and other applications.

Abstract: International audience; The effect of galvanic coupling on the corrosion behavior of Mg and Mg17Al12 in Mg-Al alloys was studied by Scanning ElectroChemical Microscopy (SECM). The effect of galvanic coupling between Mg and Mg17Al12 was investigated using a “model” Mg+Mg17Al12 material with a controlled microstructure to evaluate the hydrogen evolution at a micrometric scale. SECM maps revealed that galvanic coupling between Mg and Mg17Al12 accelerates the corrosion rate (formation of a thicker passive layer) of both components. Mg17Al12 acts controversially to a conventional cathode in galvanic system since hydrogen production by its hydrolysis reaction was found to increase due to the electron transfer with the anode (Mg).

Abstract: Despite the ubiquity of singlet carbenes in chemistry, their utility as true monomeric building blocks for the synthesis of functional organic polymers has been underexplored. In this work, we exploit the capability of purposely designed mono- and bis-acyclic amino(aryl)carbenes to selectively dimerize as a general strategy to access diaminoalkenes and hitherto unknown amino-containing poly(p-phenylene vinylene)s (N-PPV’s). The unique selectivity of the dimerization of singlet amino(aryl)carbenes, relative to putative C-H insertion pathways, is rationalized by DFT calculations. Of particular interest, unlike classical PPV’s, the presence of amino groups in α-position of C=C double bonds in N-PPV’s allows their physico-chemical properties to be manipulated in different ways by a simple protonation reaction. Hence, depending on the nature of the amino group (iPr2N vs. piperidine), either a complete loss of conjugation or a blue-shift of the maximum of absorption is observed, as a result of the protonation at different sites (nitrogen vs. carbon). Overall, this study highlights that singlet bis-amino(aryl)carbenes hold great promise to access functional polymeric materials with switchable properties, through a proper selection of their substitution pattern., Despite the ubiquity of singlet carbenes in chemistry, their utility as true monomeric building blocks for the synthesis of functional organic polymers has been underexplored. Abstract: International audience; We describe a new approach to making plasmonic metamolecules with well-controlled resonances at optical wavelengths. Metamolecules are highly symmetric, subwavelength-scale clusters of metal and dielectric. They are of interest for metafluids, isotropic optical materials with applications in imaging and optical communications. For such applications, the morphology must be precisely controlled: the optical response is sensitive to nanometer-scale variations in the thickness of metal coatings and the distances between metal surfaces. To achieve this precision, we use a multi-step colloidal synthesis approach. Starting from highly monodisperse silica seeds, we grow octahedral clusters of polystyrene spheres using seeded-growth emulsion polymerization. We then overgrow the silica and remove the polystyrene to create a dimpled template. Finally, we attach six silica satellites to the template and coat them with gold. Using single-cluster spectroscopy, we show that the plasmonic resonances are reproducible from cluster to cluster. By comparing the spectra to theory, we show that the multi-step synthesis approach can control the distances between metallic surfaces to nanometer-scale precision. More broadly, our approach shows how metamolecules can be produced in bulk by combining different, high-yield colloidal synthesis steps, analogous to how small molecules are produced by multi-step chemical reactions.

Abstract: International audience; The design and chemical synthesis of plasmonic nanoresonators exhibiting a strong magnetic response in the visible is a key requirement to the realization of efficient functional and self-assembled metamaterials. However, novel applications like Huygens’ metasurfaces or mu-near-zero materials require stronger magnetic responses than those currently reported. Our numerical simulations demonstrate that the specific dodecahedral morphology, whereby 12 silver satellites are located on the faces of a nanosized dielectric dodecahedron, provides sufficiently large electric and magnetic dipolar and quadrupolar responses that interfere to produce so-called generalized Huygens’ sources, fulfilling the generalized Kerker condition. Using a multistep colloidal engineering approach, we synthesize highly symmetric plasmonic nanoclusters with a controlled silver satellite size and show that they exhibit a strong forward scattering that may be used in various applications such as metasurfaces or perfect absorbers.

Abstract: International audience; The generation of artificial optical magnetism (AOM) in engineered composites has been the major concept that led to the emergence of the field of metamaterials at the turn of the millennium. Indeed, the proven possibility to manipulate the magnetic permeability of materials at microwave frequencies induced a considerable excitement in the scientific community as it opened the way to the design of unprecedented tools and devices for the control of light propagation. Extensions to higher frequencies of IR and visible light were soon proposed and tested by downsizing the artificial structures. The fabrication of negative index materials, optical cloaks or hyper-lenses seemed within reach. Two decades later, and after considerable research efforts, the applications of the AOM are still scarce and the concept seems to face a number of fundamental physical limits. We review in this chapter the state-of-the-art of the bottom-up approach whereby nanochemistry and colloidal physics are used to engineer hybrid metastructures exhibiting AOM in visible light or near IR.

Abstract: International audience; Molecules are increasingly considered for information processing and sensing applications. Therefore, much research has focused on the improvement of such property changes, especially the ability to observe the switching at room temperature. The relationship between chemical structure and spin state in a transition metal complex has an important bearing on the design of spin crossover materials. Thus, ligand design has been the focus of much attention. It has allowed generation of highly cooperative spin-transition iron (II) complexes to promote hysteretic effects. We present herein the thermal and light-induced magnetic properties of several photoswitchable precursors based on a bidentate ligand (phenanthroline), and a monodentate ligand such as a pyridine or picoline derivative. These results were discussed on the basis of the alkyl-substituted pyridine ligand effects on the magnetic and phtomagnetic properties of mononuclear iron (II) complexes. Interestingly, single crystals were obtained for the 4-cyano-pyridine derivate allowing the X-ray diffraction crystal-structure determination.

Abstract: International audience; Highly symmetrical gold nanocages can be produced with a controllable number of circular windows of either 2, 3, 4, 6 or 12 via an original fabrication route. The synthetic pathway includes three main stages: the synthesis of silica/polystyrene multipod templates, the regioselective seeded growth of a gold shell on the unmasked part of the silica surface and the development of gold nanocages by dissolving/etching the templates. Electron microscopy and tomography provide evidence of the symmetrical features of the as-obtained nanostructures. The optical properties of nanocages with 4 and 12 windows were measured at the single particle level by spatial modulation spectroscopy and correlated with numerical simulations based on finite-element modeling. The new multi-step synthesis approach reported here also allows the synthesis of rattle-like nanostructures through filling of the nanocages with a guest nano-object. With the potential to adjust the chemical composition, size and geometry of both the guest particle and the host cage, it opens new routes towards the fabrication of hollow nanostructures of high interest for a variety of applications including sensing devices, catalytic reactors and biomedicine. New concepts We demonstrate a new concept for making hollow nanoscale structures which are central to the advances in many current and emerging areas of technology. Nanocages are hollow and porous nanostructures. The ones made of metal are needed for optics, catalysis, biomedicine, and sensing. But, they are difficult to make. In particular, it is difficult to yield precise nanoscale control of the porosity as well as the composition. We address this challenge by combining inorganic colloidal synthesis and metal deposition on biphasic sacrificial templates. The single-particle spectroscopy and simulation confirm that our approach affords tight control over the morphology and porosity at the nanoscale. Previous approaches to making metal nanocages rely on galvanic replacement reactions and siteselective deposition. They offer control over morphology, but limited control over composition, porosity and scaleup. Our approach provides a simple and general strategy to circumvent these issues. It can be applied to a wide range of materials, and with further developement to any nanorattle-like nanostructures.

Abstract: International audience; A goal in the field of nanoscale optics is the fabrication of nanostructures with strong directional light scattering at visible frequencies. Here, we demonstrate the synthesis of Mie-resonant coreshell particles with overlapping electric and magnetic dipole resonances in the visible spectrum. The core consists of silicon surrounded by a lower index silicon oxynitride (SiOxNy) shell with an adjustable thickness. Optical spectroscopies coupled to Mie theory calculations give the first experimental evidence that the relative position and intensity of the magnetic and electric dipole resonances are tuned by changing the core-shell architecture. Specifically, coating a high-index particle with a low-index shell coalesces the dipoles, while maintaining a high scattering efficiency, thus generating broadband forward scattering. This synthetic strategy opens a route towards metamaterial fabrication with unprecedented control over visible light manipulation.

Abstract: Nanoshells made of a silica core and a gold shell possess an optical response that is sensitive to nanometer-scale variations in shell thickness. The exponential red shift of the plasmon resonance with decreasing shell thickness makes ultrathin nanoshells (less than 10 nm) particularly interesting for broad and tuneable ranges of optical properties. Nanoshells are generally synthesised by coating gold onto seed-covered silica particles, producing continuous shells with a lower limit of 15 nm, due to an inhomogeneous droplet formation on the silica surface during the seed regrowth. In this paper, we investigate the effects of three variations of the synthesis protocol to favour ultrathin nanoshells: seed density, polymer additives and microwave treatment. We first maximised gold seed density around the silica core, but surprisingly its effect is limited. However, we found that the addition of polyvinylpyrrolidone during the shell synthesis leads to higher homogeneity and a thinner shell and that a post-synthetic thermal treatment using microwaves can further smooth the particle surface. This study brings new insights into the synthesis of metallic nanoshells, pushing the limits of ultrathin shell synthesis.

Abstract: International audience; In the field of functional nanomaterials, core-satellite nanocluster have recently elicited great interest due to their unique optoelectronic properties. However, core-satellite synthetic routes to date are hampered by delicate and multistep reaction conditions and no practical method has been reported for the ordering of these structures onto a surface monolayer. Herein we show a reproducible and simplified thin film process to fabricate bimetallic raspberry nanoclusters using block copolymer (BCP) lithography. Inorganic raspberry nanoclusters fabricated consisted of a ~ 36 nm alumina core decorated with ~15 nm Au satellites after infusing multilayer BCP nanopatterns. A series of cylindrical BCPs with different molecular weights allowed us to dial in specific nanodot periodicities (from 30 to 80 nm). Highly ordered BCP nanopatterns were then selectively infiltrated with alumina and Au species to develop multi-level bimetallic raspberry features. Microscopy and x-ray reflectivity analysis were used at each fabrication step to gain further mechanistic insights and understand the infiltration process. Furthermore, grazing-incidence small-angle X-ray scattering studies of infiltrated films confirmed the excellent order and vertical orientation over wafer scale areas of Al2O3/Au raspberry nanoclusters. We believe our work demonstrates a robust strategy towards designing hybrid nanoclusters since BCP blocks can be infiltrated with various low cost salt-based precursors. The highly controlled nanocluster strategy disclosed here could have wide ranging uses, in particular for metasurface and optical based sensor applications.

Abstract: International audience; Porous elastomeric polymers have been used in a wide range of applications because of their unique characteristics such as biocompatibility,gas permeability, thermal stability, and hydrophobic and dielectric properties. Poly(dimethyl siloxane) (PDMS), a commercially availableelastomer, has also been shown to exhibit specific acoustic properties. However, the material properties were limited because of a lack of control over the chemistry used to prepare the cross-linked PDMS elastomer. Here, the synthesis of PDMS-based polymerized medium internal-phase emulsions (polyMIPEs) with tunable storage shear moduli (G′) has been performed using macromolecular thiol−ene reactions. Storage shear modulus values from ∼38 to ∼330 kPa were achieved by changing the stoichiometric ratio of the thiol-to-ene-functionalized PDMS, whereas the porosity of the polyMIPEs was controlled by the volume of the aqueous phase used in the emulsion formulation. Very low sound velocities (∼40 m/s) through the porous materials were recorded using acoustic characterization. Therefore, this work provides an example of the synthesis of soft polyMIPEs with possible applications as acoustic materials.

Abstract: International audience; Prostate cancer represents one of the most common forms of cancer affecting men across the globe. Due to late diagnosis of this disease, the mortality of this condition is very high. Conventional diagnostic methods like the direct rectal examination are uncomfortable and, in most cases, delayed, and further confirmation is required with biopsies and Gleason score. The most common biomarker approved by the FDA (United States Food and Drug Administration) is the prostate specific antigen (PSA) that is detected by conventional biochemical assays which require expensive reagents, is time-consuming and more often is only indicative and cannot be considered confirmative as it is susceptible to erroneous conclusions. The prostate health index employs quantification of PSA in its free and bound forms to enumerate the risk of prostate cancer and has found acceptance with clinicians though the methods used to determine these quantities are slow and require additional sensitivity. Search for novel biomarkers other than PSA has resulted in the identification of several promising candidates. However, their detection is still heavily dependent upon conventional biochemical assays that retain the challenges of being time-consuming, poorly sensitive and expensive. Development of specific sensor technologies integrating nanomaterials offers a viable alternative for rapid and sensitive determination of these non-PSA markers. This review summarizes the major advances in the development of sensors for diagnosis of prostate cancer using non-PSA markers. It also highlights some of the emerging paradigms in cancer diagnosis that may transform the diagnostic field in the context of prostate cancer.

Abstract: International audience; Unlike heavier elements, the migration of hydrogen species in perovskite materials cannot be directly tracked using imaging or mass spectrocopy techniques. Our results show that quantitative analysis of D / H exchange in PbCH3ND3I3 allows indirect monitoring of H migration by following the N-D vibration using polarization-modulated infrared reflexion-absorption spectroscopy. Kinetic analysis shows that the isotope exchange process is pseudo-first order and particularly sensitive to the intensity of light and relative humidity, and, to a lesser degree, sample thickness. In the presence of light (450 nm), the D / H exchange is accelerated up to 10-fold with respect to samples in the dark, but slows again for higher light intensities. This unexpected behavior is in agreement with the Bourgoin-Corbett mechanism for ionization-enhanced ion migration. The technique also allows the direct assessment of the efficiency of protective layers towards deterioration of hybrid organic-inorganic perovskite devices by moisture. Comparison of different monolayer-forming fluorinated molecules reveals important differences in rates attesting to variations between their efficiency in blocking access to the active layer by water molecules.

Abstract: International audience; Enzymatic reactions involving glucose hold the potential for building implantable biosensors and embedded power generators for various medical applications. While Biofuel cells (BFCs) such as enzymatic glucose/O2 are ensured to benefit from abundant chemical resources that can be harvested in the immediate environment of the human body, the highly critical in vivo kinetics of biofuel cell is not yet fully understood. Unfortunately, existing solutions for real-time monitoring of the reaction on rodents are not possible today, or too bulky, which has a biasing impact on the animal behavior. This work presents a light, battery-less, and wireless strategy to continuously monitor a BFC implanted in a laboratory rat using a Frequency Identification (RFID) link. An extremely lightweight and flexible tag antenna of footprint lower than 10 cm² is presented with communication capability above 60 cm in field environment. The operational capabilities are demonstrated with a 24-hour continuous monitoring of an enzymatic glucose/O2 reaction, both in vitro and in vivo.

Abstract: Recently, metasurfaces have been proven to be effective and compact devices for the design of arbitrary wavefronts. Metasurfaces are planar metamaterials with a subwavelength thickness that allows wavefront shaping by introducing in-plane variations, namely, gradients, in the spatial wave response of these flat structures. Here we report a new class of acoustic gradient-index (GRIN) metasurfaces engineered from soft graded-porous silicone rubber with a high acoustic index for broadband ultrasonic three-dimensional wavefront shaping in water. The functionalities of these soft flat lenses are illustrated through various experiments, which demonstrate beam steering and beam focusing, as well as vortex beam generation in free space. These new GRIN metasurfaces may have important applications in various domains using designed ultrasonic fields (biomedical imaging, industrial non-destructive testing, contactless particle manipulation), since their fabrication is very straightforward with common polymer science engineering., Here, the authors report an approach for creating various acoustic wavefronts in free space by using soft gradient-index porous metasurfaces. These flat lenses generate steered planar, focused spherical and helical ultrasonic beams in water by manipulating the spatial distribution of the material porosity.

Abstract: International audience; Materials with a high and tunable refractive index are attractive for nanophotonic applications. In this contribution, we propose a straightforward fabrication technique of high-refractive index surfaces based on self-assembled nanostructured block copolymer thin films. The selective and customizable metal incorporation within out-of-plane polymer lamellae produces azimuthally isotropic metallic nanostructures of defined geometries, which were analysed using microscopy and small-angle X-ray scattering techniques. Variable-angle spectroscopic ellipsometry was used to relate the geometrical parameters of the metallic features and the resulting refractive index of the patterned surfaces. In particular, nanostructured gold patterns with a high degree of homogeneity and a gold content as low as 16 vol% reach a refractive index value of more than 3 in the visible domain. Our study thus demonstrates a new route for the preparation of high refractive index surfaces with a low metal content for optical applications.

Abstract: International audience; We report a quite simple strategy to assemble silica/polystyrene dumbbell-shaped nanoparticles into clusters with an aggregation number from two to more than 30. The polystyrene lobe serves as a patch that is made sticky and ready to merge with similar ones when the dumbbells are dispersed in an ethanol/DMF mixture. Thanks to transmission electron microscopy experiments, we describe qualitativelyand quantitatively the influence of several experimental parameters such as the solvent quality, i.e. DMF fraction, and the patch-to-particle size ratio. We show that the DMF fraction range (30–50 vol%) for the sticky regime can be extended if the incubation process is completed by a centrifugation step.We also demonstrate an unexpected evolution in the average aggregation number with the patch-toparticle size ratio that may be explained by the molar mass distribution within the polystyrene core of the clusters. Lastly, we show that this assembly route may be extended to gold-coated clusters.

Abstract: The authors report here on the optical response and extraction of the morphological properties of three sizes of self-assembled nearly hexagonal arrays of gold (Au) nanoparticles (NPs), deposited on the native oxide on c-Si. The arrays were prepared by templating gold NP growth with self-assembled cylindrically organized block copolymer thin films, with consecutive removal of the polymer matrix by plasma etching. The particle sizes were controlled by using block copolymers of different molecular weights when assembling the templates. The resulting gold nanostructures were characterized by scanning probe microscopy. Spectroscopic ellipsometry was used to record the optical response of the samples, and the modeling of the spectra and the extraction of morphological parameters were performed using a modification of the Bedeaux–Vlieger formalism implemented in GranFilm. The modeling issues upon the introduction of a thin intermediate (oxide) layer between the particle and the substrate are discussed in detail, and a solution to the model procedure is proposed. The particles were modeled as truncated oblate Au spheroids in a hexagonal lattice on the native oxide on c-Si. The model fit converged to a solution indicating that the particles present a low wetting of the native oxide substrate, with parameters describing the particles and lattice in good correspondence with AFM. The extended GranFilm model simulations are also supported by finite element modeling. Abstract: International audience; We describe a method for the fabrication of acoustic metasurfaces, which is based on soft porous polymer materials. The materials are obtained using an emulsion templating technique, which allows for the fabrication of soft porous polymers with fully controlled porosity values between 0 and 30%. Our approach involves the polymerization of water-in-silicone emulsions with controlled water volume fractions. The obtained wet solid monolith samples are dried using three different methods. Due to the softness of the polymer matrix, and like in polyHIPE hydrogels or silica aerogels, the first method—regular air drying—leads to a collapse of the material and we present a complete experimental study of the observed kinetics as well as a model to account for the observed results. We show that this model can catch the kinetics characteristics. Then, using two alternative drying techniques, H2O2-assisted and supercritical drying, we show that it is possible to obtain materials with fully controlled porosities. The speed of sound—or equivalently the material acoustic index—inside the material being dependent on its porosity, we obtain a gradient-index acoustic material by spatially controlling the porosity distribution along the two dimensions of these metasurfaces. Their ability in terms of wavefront shaping is then demonstrated through a deflecting experiment performed in water with a sample having a thickness five times smaller than the incident acoustic wavelength at ultrasonic frequencies.

Abstract: International audience; Existing nanocolloidal optical resonators presenting strong magnetic resonances often suffer from multi-step low yield synthesis routes as well as a limited tunability, in particular in terms of spectral superposition of electric and magnetic resonances, which is the cornerstone for achieving Huygens scatterers. To overcome these drawbacks, we have synthesized clusters of gold nanoparticles using an emulsion-based formulation route. The fabrication technique involved the emulsification of an aqueous suspension of gold nanoparticles in an oil phase, followed by the controlled ripening of the emulsion. The structural control of the assynthesized clusters, of mean radius 120 nm and produced in large numbers, is demonstrated with microscopy and X-ray scattering techniques. Using a polarization-resolved multi-angle light scattering setup, we reach a comprehensive angular and spectroscopic determination of their optical resonant scattering in the visible wavelength range. We thus report on the clear experimental evidence of strong optical magnetic resonances and directional forward scattering patterns. The clusters behave as strong Huygens sources. Our findings crucially show that the electric and magnetic resonances, as well as the scattering patterns can be tuned by adjusting the inner cluster structure, playing with a simple parameter of the fabrication route. This experimental approach allows for the large scale production of nanoresonators with potential uses for Huygens metasurfaces.

28. Na + ion selectivity study of a crown ether functionalized PEDOT analog

Abstract: International audience; An electropolymerized ion selective PEDOT analog is presented in this communication. Poly-(2-phenyl-15crown-5-(3,4-ethylene-dioxythiophene)-amine) (PEDOT-Crown15) showed excellent electrochemical stability with a fast electron transfer (ΔEp = 50 mV). In comparison with unmodified PEDOT, a faster change from isolating to conducting state was observed. This is attributed to the formation of a well-ordered internal polymer matrix, caused by the aniline-Crown15 moiety. In-situ electrochemical conductance measurements in the presence of different monovalent cations showed high affinity for Na + ions, as evidenced by the decrease of the conductance of the polymer in comparison with K + and Li +. This selectivity is attributed to a limitation of the charge hopping conductance

Abstract: International audience; This article reports on a procedure to predict the optimal thickness of cylindrical porous electrodes operating a single redox reaction. This is obtained from a macroscopic model for the coupled diffusion-reaction process that is first validated with voltammetry experiments of the H2O2/H2O reductionreaction carried out with a series of porous electrodes elaborated in this work. An analytical solution to this model is developed in the steady regime and for electrodes featuring a thickness to mean radius ratio small enough compared to unity. An analytical expression of the optimal electrode thickness is derived corresponding to the crossover value of two asymptotic regimes characterizing the dependence of the volume currentdensity produced by the electrode upon its thickness. The predictive tool of the optimal thickness is general, regardless of the porous microstructure. The case of the electrodes used in the reported experiments illustrates that the optimal thickness is not intrinsic to the microsctructure characterized by the size of the representative volume, its specific area and effective diffusion coefficient. It also depends on the operating conditions reflected in the kinetic number, Ki, and the thickness of the diffusion layer surrounding the electrode. The dependence of the optimal thickness on these two parameters is quite significant in a range of very small values of Ki but remains quasi constant beyond a threshold value.

Abstract: International audience; The immobilization of bilirubin oxidase (BOD) on macroporous gold electrodes for the optimization of bioelectrocatalytic activity is described. A bilirubin oxidase mutant S362C (cys-BOD) engineered with a cysteine residue located on purpose at the enzyme surface close to the T1 active center was used. It allows the attachment in one-step of a self-assembled monolayer of the enzyme to gold through a reaction between the thiol group of the cysteine residue and the metal surface. BOD immobilization of wild type and S362C mutant in macroporous gold electrodes allowed high retention of activity and perfect control of the overall BOD loading due to the fine-tuning of the macroporous structure. The macroporous arrangement together with the use of cys-BOD makes these rationally designed enzyme-modified electrodes very promising candidates for high-performance bioelectrocatalytic devices with improved activity and stability.

Abstract: International audience; Organic semi-conducting polymers are attractive for their competitive price and their low processability requirements. Aqueous solutions of these polymers can be deposited with a variety of processes to make thin, flexible and transparent films. Such films can be used as transparent electrodes in organic light emitting diodes or organic photovoltaic cells. Poly(3,4-ethylene dioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) is the only PEDOT:polyanion commercially available. However, other counterions such as poly(4-styrene trifluo-romethyl(bissulfonylimide)) (PSTFSI) have been shown to stabilize PEDOT and give comparable conductive properties and transparency to the films. We show that the rheological properties of these two aqueous systems are especially different. For example PEDOT:PSTFSI inks can form a physical gel even at low concentrations, making it attractive for processing purposes while PEDOT:PSS shows only minor shear thinning behavior for concentrations as high as 1 %wt. This difference in behavior is due to structural differences between the polyanions: PSTFSI favors hydrogen bonding while PSS does not. Here, we present a systematic study of the rheological properties and the film properties of PEDOT:PSTFSI inks for different concentrations and using various deposition processes such as doctor blade, screen-printing, inkjet, and soft blade deposition. We show that such inks can be adapted to each of these processes by simply tuning the concentration, making their formulation simple while keeping comparable optoelectronic properties as commercial inks.

Abstract: International audience; We report a method to incorporate non-functionalized gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) in oriented cylindrical phases of poly(styrene)-b-poly(vinylpyridine) (PS-b-PVP) block copolymers, perpendicular or parallel to a substrate. The combination of AFM, TEM, GISAXS and spectroscopy allows complete characterization of the nanocomposites. AuNPs are produced by the ultra-sound reduction of a gold salt in the copolymer solution, prior to the deposition of the films by spin-coating. The AuNPs are found to be located within the PVP cylinders exclusively. Sizes from 2 to 4 nm are tuned as a function of the initial gold salt concentration. The seeded-growth of these pre-formed AuNPs was also achieved by a further ultra-sound treatment to produce larger AuNPs (up to d = 10 nm) with plasmon resonance properties. For parallel cylinders, the presence of AuNPs in the PVP domains disturbs the organization, while for perpendicular cylinders, the PVP domains are swollen without any change in their orientation. The synthesis of AuNPs inside the copolymer was also performed by radiolysis, through irradiation of the copolymer solution or the copolymer film, both containing the gold salt. In these cases, the presence of plasmonic AuNPs was also evidenced. Offering a control of the AuNP size (o2 nm to 10 nm) and location, the presented method is a promising way to insert plasmonic AuNPs into oriented cylinders for achieving anisotropic geometries of valuable interest for optics

Abstract: We study the evolution of the acoustic properties of porous polymer materials in the glass transition temperature domain. First, we study the cross-linked 2-ethylhexyl acrylate (EHA) – 2-ethylhexyl methacrylate (EHMA) non-porous matrices at various compositions and, consequently, various glass transition temperatures. Based on the frequency-temperature equivalence principle, we build master curves in order to determine the bulk (K0) and shear (G0) moduli corresponding to ultrasonic frequencies (about 300 kHz). Next, we synthesize some porous samples of these matrices using the emulsion-templated polymerization approach usually known as polyHIPE (for polymerized High Internal Phase Emulsion). We measure the longitudinal sound speed CL for different matrix compositions (at room temperature) or at different temperatures (for the same sample composition). As expected, we show that the sound speed decreases with increasing K0/G0 ratio, i.e. as matrices become softer, which is either due to an increase of EHA content or to an increase of the temperature. This demonstrates how composition and temperature may be used to tune the sound speed in porous polymers. We show that the theoretical predictions using a low-frequency multiple scattering model leads to underestimated values of the sound speed, especially for soft matrix. We attribute this discrepancy to the difference in mechanical properties of the polymer matrix between non porous and porous samples.

Abstract: Monitoring small animal to collect telemetry during their movement is a challenging task, as the body displacement tend to impact greatly the field distribution. A power transfer scheme based on complementary split ring resonator is demonstrated here for UHF RFID reader-tag link rodent telemetry application. It is shown that the operation of the tag is maintained in all the region of the cage where the animal can move. Thanks to an adequate ground plane, the wearable tag antenna is minimally effected by the presence of the biological tissues. The map of the efficiency along the cage surface was derived from multiple simulations and measurements. It results a minimum efficiency of an order of magnitude higher than required, and a maximum of 1.8% while the tag is worn by the animal.

Abstract: International audience; The core@double-shells structured TiO2@Carbon@SiO2 nanowires (TiO2@C@SiO2 NWs) with a uniform carbon inner shell and a SiO2 outer shell were successfully synthesized and subsequently incorporated into poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) matrix to prepare dielectric nanocomposites. Compared with the pristine TiO2 NWs/PVDF nanocomposites, the introduction of carbon interlayer as the inner shell between the TiO2 core and SiO2 outer shell offers the nanocomposites with two additional types of interfacial polarization, namely, (i) TiO2/carbon and (ii) carbon/SiO2 interfacial polarizations. These additional interfacial polarizations promote the dielectric constants, and simultaneously the SiO2 insulating barrier layer suppresses the losses of the nanocomposites. Moreover, the nanocomposite with 30 wt % filler loading (19.78 vol %) exhibits an excellent dielectric performance with a constant of 41 and a loss tangent of 0.05 at 103 Hz. The multi-shells strategy reported here could be extended to a variety ofinorganic hybrids to develop novel dielectric nanocomposites.

Abstract: The functional properties of P(VDF-co-TrFE) are strongly dependent on its structure, which, in turn, depends on processing conditions applied. In this work we investigate the P(VDF-co-TrFE) processing structure-function relationships, in order to find the thermal conditions that result in optimum ferroelectric performance in thin film configuration. Our results show that annealing temperature affects mostly the remnant polarization value, P, while annealing time has a severe effect on the coercive field, E-c, An optimized ferroelectric functionality, in terms of high P-r of about 90 mC/m(2) and low E-c of 50 MV/m, is achieved and rationalized through structural analysis by means of GIWAXS. The best performing structure exhibits a high degree of crystallinity, a preferential orientation of the crystallites with the polymer chains parallel to the substrate and the occurrence of three ferroelectric phases. A deconvolution study demonstrates the presence of a moderately unstable ferroelectric phase that is designated to facilitate ferroelectric switching. Our findings show that a single step of 15 min annealing at 135 degrees C leads to high performance P(VDF-co-TrFE) structure, proving that the 2 h-long annealing step that is traditionally applied is not necessary. Abstract: The thermal properties of a material with a spatio-temporal modulation in both the thermal conductivity and the mass density are studied. The special configuration studied here consists of a modulation in a wave-like fashion. It is found that these materials behaves, in an effective way, as materials with an internal convection-like term that provides them of non-reciprocal properties, in the sense that the flow of heat has different properties when it propagates in the same direction or in the opposite one to the modulation of the parameters. An effective medium description is presented which accurately describes the modulated material, and numerical simulations supports both the non-reciprocal properties and the effective medium description. It is found that these materials are promising candidates for the design of thermal diodes and other advanced devices for the control of the heat flow at all scales.

Abstract: International audience; Recent advances in the field of microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) have generated great interest in thesubstitution of inorganic microcantilevers by organic ones, due to their low cost, high flexibility and a simplifiedfabrication by means of printing methods. Here, we present the integration of electrostrictive nanocompositesinto organic microcantilever resonators specifically designed for mechanical energy harvesting from ambientvibrations. Strain sensitive nanocomposite materials composed of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) dispersed inpolydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) are integrated into all-organic MEMS by means of an innovative low-cost andenvironment friendly process by combining printing techniques and xurography. Static tests of the electrostrictivenanocomposite with 3.7 wt% rGO show good performances with variations of capacitance that exceeds4% for strain values lower than 0.55% as the microcantilever is bent. The results in dynamic mode suggest thatthe organic MEMS meet the requirements for vibration energy harvesting. With an applied sinusoidal acceleration(amplitude 0.5 g, frequency 15 Hz) a power density of 6 μW/cm3 is achieved using a primitive circuit.

Abstract: Metamaterials have optical properties that are unprecedented in nature. They have opened new horizons in light manipulation, with the ability to bend, focus, and completely reflect, transmit or absorb an incident wave front. Optically active metamaterials in particular could be used for applications ranging from 3D information storage, more efficient photovoltaic cells, high security watermarks, and fiber optics. Silicon (Si) particles are some of the most promising building blocks for optically active metamaterials, with high scattering efficiency coupled to low light absorption for visible frequencies. However, to date ideal Si building blocks cannot be produced using bulk synthesis techniques, and thus metamaterial construction is currently confounded. The key to unleashing the potential of Si metamaterials is to find a route to produce Si building blocks between 75-200 nm in diameter that are uniform in size and shape, crystalline, have few impurities and little to no porosity. This review provides theoretical background about Si optical properties for metamaterials, an overview of current synthetic methods and provides direction towards the most promising routes to ideal Si particles for metamaterials.

The optimization of their thermoelectric efficiency is usually sought by tuning the oxidation levels of the conducting polymers, even if such methodology is detrimental to the Seebeck coefficient (S) as both the Seebeck coefficient and the electrical conductivity (σ) are antagonistically related to the carrier concentration. Here we report a concurrent increase of S and σ and we experimentally derive the dependence of Seebeck coefficient on charge carrier mobility for the first time in organic electronics. Through specific control of the conducting polymer synthesis, we enabled the formation of a denser percolation network that facilitated the charge transport and the thermodiffusion of the charge carriers inside the conducting polymer layer, while the material shifted from a Fermi glass towards a semi-metal, as its crystallinity increased. This work sheds light upon the origin of the thermoelectric properties of conducting polymers, but also underlines the importance of enhanced charge carrier mobility for the design of efficient thermoelectric polymers.

Abstract: International audience; We are developing a cell-based bioelectronic glucose sensor that exploits the multi-parametric sensing ability of pancreatic islet cells for the treatment of diabetes. These cells sense changes in the concentration of glucose and physiological hormones and immediately react by generating electrical signals. In our sensor, signals from multiple cells are recorded as field potentials by a micro-electrode array (MEA). Thus, cell response to various factors can be assessed rapidly and with high throughput. However, signal quality and consequently overall sensor performance rely critically on close cell–electrode proximity. Therefore, we present here a non-invasive method of further exploiting the electrical properties of these cells to guide them towards multiple micro-electrodes via electrophoresis. Parameters were optimized by measuring the cell's zeta potential and modeling the electric field distribution. Clonal and primary mouse or human β-cells migrated directly to target electrodes during the application of a 1 V potential between MEA electrodes for 3 minutes. The morphology, insulin secretion, and electrophysiological characteristics were not altered compared to controls. Thus, cell manipulation on standard MEAs was achieved without intro- ducing any external components and while maintaining the performance of the biosensor. Since the analy- sis of the cells' electrical activity was performed in real time via on-chip recording and processing, this work demonstrates that our biosensor is operational from the first step of electrically guiding cells to the final step of automatic recognition. Our favorable results with pancreatic islets, which are highly sensitive and fragile cells, are encouraging for the extension of this technique to other cell types and microarray devices.

Abstract: International audience; This study compares the electrochromic performance of NiO thin films deposited by RF magnetron sputtering cycled in lithium, sodium and small cations free based electrolytes, namely 1:9 LiTFSI in EMITFSI, 1:9 NaTFSI in EMITFSI and EMITFSI respectively. Regardless of the electrolyte nature, NiO thin films show similar electrochromic properties associated with an optical switch from colorless to brownish upon oxidation correlated to a modulation of transmittance close to 40 % associated with a good electrochemical stability. Interestingly, depending on the electrolyte nature, the EC behavior is correlated with various CV shapes raising the question of the mechanism involved. In particular, the reversible coloration mechanism cannot be only described by a single insertion/extraction of lithium ions, as observed for tungsten oxide in lithium media. The rectangular shape of the CV curves of NiO thin films in neat electrolyte and the behavior of NiO with various scan rates suggest that the EC properties result from a combination of both faradaic and capacitive contributions, with redox reactions largely occurring at the surface. Integration of NiO thin films in a full device is illustrated in double sided PANI/white electrolyte-EMITFSI/NiO EC devices showing simultaneous progressive color changes from blue to green and white to brown, on PANI and NiO sides, respectively.

Abstract: International audience; In this work, we propose the realization of electromagnetic metamaterials in two and three dimensions by means of highly anisotropic rods and spheres. The two-dimensional case is deeply analyzed, and the realization of an anisotropic rod by means of angularly layered cylinders is proposed. The band structure of a periodic arrangement of angularly layered rodsis computed, showing a low frequency band gap and some flat modes within it which increases as a function of the number of sectors in the cylinder. The system is studied by means of an effective medium approach, and it is found that the flat bands correspond to a sharp frequency region where the effective metamaterial is doubly negative. A perfect agreement is found between the dispersion curves obtained by means of the effective medium model and the full band structure computed by the finite element method. It is also found that only four sectors in the angularly layered cylinder are enough to obtain the desired double negativity, which is a promising result in view of the fabrication of the presented structures. Finally, the three-dimensional version of these materials is analyzed by means of anisotropic spheres, showing similar results.

Abstract: International audience; Soft porous silicone rubbers are demonstrated to exhibit extremely low sound speeds of tens of m/s for these dense materials, even for low porosities of the order of a few percent. Our ultrasonic experiments show a sudden drop of the longitudinal sound speed with the porosity, while the transverse sound speed remains constant. For such porous elastomeric materials, we propose simple analytical expressions for these two sound speeds, derived in the framework of Kuster and Toksöz, revealing an excellent agreement between the theoretical predictions and the experimental results for both longitudinal and shear waves. Acoustic attenuation measurements also complete the characterization of these soft porous materials.

Abstract: Controlling the interface between biological tissues and electrodes remains an important challenge for the development of implantable devices in terms of electroactivity, biocompatibility, and long-term stability. To engineer such a biocompatible interface a low molecular weight gel (LMWG) based on a glycosylated nucleoside fluorocarbon amphiphile (GNF) was employed for the first time to wrap gold electrodes via a noncovalent anchoring strategy, that is, self-assembly of GNF at the electrode surface. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) studies indicate that the gold surface is coated with the GNF hydrogels. Electrochemical measurements using cyclic voltammetry (CV) clearly show that the electrode properties are not affected by the presence of the hydrogel. This coating layer of 1 to 2 μm does not significantly slow down the mass transport through the hydrogel. Voltammetry experiments with gel coated macroporous enzyme electrodes reveal that during continuous use their current is improved by 100% compared to the noncoated electrode. This demonstrates that the supramolecular hydrogel dramatically increases the stability of the bioelectrochemical interface. Therefore, such hybrid electrodes are promising candidates that will both offer the biocompatibility and stability needed for the development of more efficient biosensors and biofuel cells.

Abstract: International audience; Isotropic plasmonic clusters consisting of a controlled number of gold satellites around a silica core are fabricated from silica/polystyrene tetrapod, hexapod, and dodecapod templates. The synthetic pathway includes stages of site-specific seed adsorption, seed-mediated growth, and iterative etching/regrowth to reshape the satellites into spheroids. Transmission electron microscopy and electron tomography provide evidence of the symmetry of the clusters. This work paves the way for comprehensive study of their optical properties.

Abstract: The plasmonic response of a metal nanoparticle in the presence of surrounding gain elements is studied, using a space and time-dependent model, which integrates a quantum formalism to describe the gain and a classical treatment for the metal. Our model fully takes into account the influence of the system geometry (nanosphere) and offers for the first time, the possibility to describe the temporal evolution of the fields and the coupling among the multipolar modes of the particle. We calculate the lasing threshold value for all multipoles of the spaser, and demonstrate that the dipolar one is lowest. The onset of the lasing instability, in the linear regime, is then studied both with and without external field forcing. We also study the behaviour of the system below the lasing threshold, with the external field, demonstrating the existence of an amplification regime where the nanoparticle’s plasmon is strongly enhanced as the threshold is approached. Finally, a qualitative discussion is provided on later, non-linear stages of the dynamics and the approach to the steady-state of the spaser; in particular, it is shown that, for the considered geometry, the spasing is necessarily multi-modal and multipolar modes are always activated.

Abstract: International audience; This paper discusses the formation of soft porous materials obtained by the polymerization of inverse water-in-silicone (polydimethylsiloxane, PDMS) emulsions. We show that the initial state of the emulsion has a strong impact on the porous structure and properties of the final material. We show that using a surfactant with different solubilities in the emulsion continuous phase (PDMS), it is possible to tune the interaction between emulsion droplets, which leads to materials with either interconnected or isolatedpores. These two systems present completely different behavior upon drying, which results in macroporous air-filled materials in the interconnected case and in a collapsed material with low porosity in the second case. Finally, we compare the mechanical and acoustical properties of these two types of bulk polymer monoliths. We also describe the formation of micrometric polymer particles (beads) in these two cases. We show that materials with an interconnected macroporous structure have low mechanical moduli andlow sound speed, and are suitable for acoustic applications. The mechanical and acoustical properties of the materials with a collapsed porous structure are similar to those of non-porous silicone, which makes them acoustically inactive.

Abstract: International audience; We report an extensive study of the concentration process of aqueous polymer solutions confined within microfluidic channels, owing to the pervaporation of water through the matrix of the chip. Concentration of polymer continuously increases up to the formation of a dense material which eventually invades the channel. This technology can be used to fabricate micro-composites of different shapes starting from dilute inks. We use both theory and screening experiments to show that the dynamics of growth can be predicted by simple conservation equations. More precisely, we establish a quantitative prediction of the growth dynamics taking into account deformations of the soft channels of the moulds, and the solvent chemical activity of the polymer solution. The present results based on general transport equations for binary mixtures provide direct guidance for the design of micro-fabricated materials considering their shape, dimensions, time scale of fabrication, and chemical composition. This quantitative framework is indeed essential to engineer integrated polymer-based micro-devices by using combined pervaporation and microfluidic moulding.
