Background: Accumulating evidence suggests that exposure to air pollution acts as a potential trigger for neurological diseases (NDs), yet the current knowledge regarding the impact of ambient nitrogen dioxide (NO2) on the patients with NDs remains limited. In this study, we conducted a time-series study to evaluate the association between short-term exposure to NO2 and hospital visits for NDs in Xinxiang, China. Methods: An over-dispersed Poisson generalized additive model was used to analyze the association between ambient NO2 concentrations and daily outpatient visits for NDs from January 1, 2015 to December 31, 2017. The model adjusted for meteorological factors, temporal trends, day of the week, and public holidays. The concentrations of air pollutants were collected from four air quality stations in Xinxiang. Results: A total of 38, 865 outpatient visits for NDs were retrieved during the study period. 86.5% of the patients were below the age of 65 years. It was revealed that a 10 µg/m3 increase in NO2 at lag 0 was associated with a significant rise of 1.50% (95% CI: 0.45–2.56%) in outpatient visits for NDs, which was stronger during the cold season. However, the overall results from stratified analyses did not reach statistical significance. Conclusions: Short-term exposure to NO2 is associated with increased outpatient visits for NDs. While there is clear evidence in the literature that the hematological parameters in athletes of different sports are affected by exercise and varying loads, to our knowledge, there are limited studies on the real impact of kickboxing matches on kickboxers' hematological parameters. In this context, this cross-sectional study was conducted to examine the acute changes in the hematological parameters of kickboxers following K1 matches. With the participation of 10 kickboxing K1 athletes, the hematological parameters, including the WBC, Plt, Neut, Lymph, Mono, RBC, Hgb, Hct, CK, La, and glucose levels, were examined before and after matches. Paired sample t-tests were used to compare the pre-test and post-test hematological parameters of the participants. The findings indicated statistically significant differences in the post-match WBC, Plt, Neut, Lymph, CK, La, and glucose levels, while no statistically significant differences were observed in the RBC, Hct, Hgb, and CK levels (p < 0.05). These results not only emphasize the complexity of physiological changes in athletes, but also show consistency with various findings in the literature, while contradicting some. Purpose: The objective was to compare the immediate effects of pharmacological versus physiotherapy intervention versus a combination of physiotherapy and pharmacological treatment, as well as the quality of life and the recurrence of symptoms in children with functional constipation after 3 months. Methods: A total of 69 children with functional constipation between the ages of 5 and 14 years of either gender were assessed and randomly assigned to one of three groups: Group A, B, and C. Visual Analogue Scale, Bristol Stool Form Scale, frequency of defecation, PedsQL GI symptom scale, and PedsQL Generic Core Scale were used as outcome measures. Pharmacology was used to treat Group A, physiotherapy was used to treat Group B, and a combination of both was used to treat Group C. Results: The study revealed statistically significant results on Visual Analogue Scale, Bristol Stool Form Scale, and frequency of defecation in all groups. However, no significant changes were observed on the PedsQL GI symptom scale and the Generic Core scale in Group A, whereas significant changes were observed in Groups B and C. Conclusion: In this study, we found that there were significant differences in the short- and long-term effects across all groups. More changes occurred in Group C than in Groups A and B. Myokines, released from the muscle, enable communication between the working muscles and other tissues. Their release during physical exercise is assumed to depend on immune–hormonal–metabolic interactions concerning mode (endurance or resistance exercise), duration, and intensity. This meta‐analysis aims to examine the acute changes of circulating myokines inducing immunoregulatory effects caused by a bout of resistance exercise and to consider potential moderators of the results. Based on this selection strategy, a systematic literature search was conducted for resistance exercise intervention studies measuring interleukin (IL‐) 6, IL‐10, IL‐1ra, tumor necrosis factor (TNF‐) α, IL‐15, IL‐7, transforming growth factor (TGF‐) β1, and fractalkines (FKN) before and immediately after resistance exercise in healthy individuals. Random‐effects meta‐analysis was performed for each myokine. We identified a moderate positive effect of resistance exercise for IL‐6 and IL‐1ra. Regarding IL‐15 and TNF‐α, small to moderate effects were found. For IL‐10, no significant effect was observed. Due to no data, meta‐analyses for IL‐7, TGF‐β1, and FKN could not be performed. No moderators (training status, type of exercise, risk of bias, age, sex, time of day, exercise volume, exercise intensity, exercise dose) of the results were detected for all tested myokines. Taken together, this systematic review and meta‐analysis showed immediate positive effects of an acute resistance exercise session on IL‐6, IL‐1ra, TNF‐α, and IL‐15 levels. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: This study aimed to investigate if the acute effects of a physical activity (PA) break on the on-task and off-task classroom behavior of primary school children are mediated by inhibition. Combining arousal theory and the cognitive stimulation hypothesis, we employed a 15-min intermittent PA protocol aiming at high-intensity with cognitive demands. We were interested in the effects of PA in real-life settings and in a feasible and sustainable manner for teachers. Thus, the PA session was short and all data collection carried out in ecologically valid school and classroom environments. Methods: Fifteen 4th grade classes were randomly assigned to the experimental group (EG; eight classes, n = 120) or waitlist control group (WCG; seven classes, n = 91). Participants were observed during normal classroom lessons for 25 min before and after the PA break (EG) or a business-as-usual lesson (WCG) and completed the Hearts and Flowers task, a task measuring primarily inhibition, once per observation block. We analyzed the effect of PA on inhibition with ANOVA and the effect on behavior and mediation effect with logistic multilevel models. Results: The PA break positively affected inhibition with a small effect. Active off-task classroom behavior was higher at post-test in the WCG, but not the EG. Of practical importance, intercept-slope interactions indicated that those with higher levels of off-task behavior at pre-test experienced greater benefits of the PA breaks. No significant mediation of the effect of PA on task-related behaviors via inhibition was found. Discussion: In conclusion, a time-efficient PA break can improve inhibition and off-task classroom behavior in primary school children. Aiming at accelerating the implementation of cumulative risk assessment to pesticide residues, this report describes a two‐step prioritisation analysis, on individual pesticides and on target organ systems, that allows to identify (i) low‐priority substances expected to have a marginal contribution to cumulative risk, and (ii) high priority organ systems to be addressed in future cumulative risk assessments. The analysis encompassed 350 substances and 36 raw primary commodities of plant origin surveyed in the monitoring cycle 2019–2021, carried out in 30 population groups, covering 3 age classes, and 17 EU countries. Probabilistic exposure calculations, for chronic and acute effects, were executed on the occurrence and consumption data by a two‐dimensional procedure, modelling variability and uncertainty. In the first step, the prioritisation method adopted allowed to reduce the number of substances by about 80%. These substances were in turn grouped based on their capacity to cause toxicological effects on common organ systems and, as second step, probabilistic combined exposure calculations were carried out for 16 target organ systems. This step allowed to identify the organ systems that need further assessment, reducing their initial number by about 70%. The organ systems would need to be prioritised as follows: reproductive and developmental toxicity, liver, kidney, male reproductive system, and haematopoietic system and haematology. The sources of uncertainty stemming from the modelling procedure and from methodological assumptions were discussed and their impact qualitatively assessed. In this study, we examined the effects of multi-component training on the mood state of older women. As part of a multiple-case study, we collected data from three elderly women over the age of 65 using the Profile of Mood States (POMS) questionnaire. The questionnaire was completed at four different time points: 5 minutes before exercise, 5 minutes after, 30 minutes after, and 60 minutes after exercise. The results showed that multi-component training had a positive effect on the vitality-activity factor, as all participants experienced improvements. These results have important implications for medical professionals, technicians, and sports scientists interested in promoting active aging, especially from an emotional perspective. In this study, we aimed to examine the effects of aquarobics on the mood of elderly people. Using the POMS - Profile of Mood States questionnaire, we collected data from three participants, two men and one woman, all over 65 years old. The questionnaire was completed at four different time points: 5 minutes before water exercise, 5 minutes after, 30 minutes after, and 60 minutes after. Our results showed that a single session in water had a positive effect on the state mood of seniors. It was observed that fatigue, depression and tension decreased, while vitality increased. These results are of great importance to medical professionals, sports scientists and advocates of active aging, especially with regard to psychological and emotional well-being. Background: Capsular bag distension syndrome (CBDS) can be effectively treated using either Neodymium-doped Yttrium Aluminum Garnet (Nd:YAG) laser capsulotomy or surgery. Assessing anterior segment, particularly immediately after Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy, could provide clinically relevant information on ocular dynamics, refractive changes, and complication mechanisms, especially in late postoperative CBDS.Objective: To explore the acute effects of Nd:YAG laser posterior capsulotomy on anterior segment parameters in late postoperative CBDS.Methods and results: In this study, 20 patients underwent Nd:YAG laser posterior capsulotomy after cycloplegia, during which milky-white fluid material migrated into the anterior vitreous. Anterior segment parameters were assessed before and immediately after laser using Scheimpflug-Placido topographer. The main outcome measures were differences in best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), aqueous depth (AqD), anterior chamber volume (ACV), iridocorneal angle (ICA), corneal volume (CV), and central corneal thickness (CCT) at the baseline versus at immediately after laser. The mean age and duration since surgery for CBDS presentation were 70.25 ± 6.21 and 6.15 ± 1.31 years, respectively. The AqD, ACV, ICA, and spherical equivalent increased significantly compared with baseline (4.18 vs. 4.02 mm, p = 0.001; 177 vs. 173.55 mm³, p = 0.004; 51.15° vs. 50.15°, p = 0.023; −1.00 vs. −2.00 D, p = 0.003, respectively). These changes were also associated with significantly improved BCVA an hour after capsulotomy [0.2 (0.05–0.2)] relative to baseline [0.3 (0.2–0.5)], (p = 0.001). CCT and CV decreased nonsignificantly; horizontal AC diameter and K1 and K2 increased nonsignificantly (p > 0.05).Conclusions: Nd:YAG laser posterior capsulotomy appears to be an effective CBDS treatment for acutely improving vision, potentially due to immediate refractive changes caused by altered anterior segment parameters. Context : Blood flow restriction research has focused on muscular strength and hypertrophy . Limited data have been reported about the blood flow restriction effect on the tendon. Objective: To analyze and compare the time course of recovery in Achilles tendon thickness after a single bout of low-intensity resistance training (LI-RT) and low-intensity blood Bow restriction training (LI-BFRT). Methods. A total of 56 healthy participants ( 24 . 60 [4 . 01 y ; 23 . 65 [3 . 4 ] body mass index ) were included . The dominant leg was assigned for LI-BFRT using low load (30% 1-repetition maximum) and 30% of the total occlusion pressure (52.21 [17.89]min Hg) in plantar - flexion exercise ( l x30 + 3x 15 repetitions ). The nondominant leg was assumed as a control condition . Main Outcome Measure: Sonography images were taken before the intervention . immediately posttraining, and 24 hours after exercise (post- 24) for the Achilles tendon thickness . Results: Changes in Achilles tendon thickness for LI - BFRT group were significant post- (-14.5%; p<.05) and post-24 (-9.2%; P < .05). In contrast, LI-RT group showed a transient decrease after exercise (-9.67%; P < .05) followed by a recovery of thickness post-24 (-1.06%; P<.05) Thickness post-24 was different between LI-BFRT versus LI-RT (P <.01). Hedge effect size analysis showed a large effect (g = 0.90) in LI-BFRT pre-post condition and a medium effect (g = 0.57) in post- to post-24. The LI-RT obtained a medium effect (g = 0.53) in pre-post condition and a small effect (g = 0.49) in post- to post-24. Conclusions : This study showed a different time course of the acute response in Achilles tendon thickness between LI-BFRT and LI-RT. Introduction: Mindfulness meditation (MM) involves and benefits cognitive functioning, especially attention and inhibition processes, which are also implicated in the control of complex motor skills, such as bimanual coordination. Thus, MM practice could potentially enhance bimanual coordination control through its cognitive benefits. Accordingly, in this study, we investigated the acute effects of a brief MM session on bimanual coordination dynamics, attention, and inhibition abilities, as well as the mediation link between MM’s cognitive and motor improvements. Methods: Healthy meditation-naïve (novices, n = 29) and meditation-experienced participants (meditators, n = 26) were randomly assigned to either an active control intervention (attentive listening to a documentary podcast) or a MM intervention (breathing and open monitoring exercise), both lasting 15 min. In the motor domain, pre- and post-tests assessed participants’ ability to intentionally maintain the anti-phase coordination pattern at maximal movement frequency and resist the spontaneous transition to the in-phase pattern. In the cognitive domain, the participants’ attentional, perceptual inhibition and motor inhibition abilities were assessed. Results: Following both interventions, meditators and novices improved the stability of their anti-phase coordination pattern (p = 0.034, ηp 2  = 0.10) and their attentional performance (p’s < 0.001, ηp 2  > 0.40). Only following the MM intervention, meditators and novices improved their ability to intentionally maintain the antiphase pattern by delaying or even suppressing the spontaneous transition to inphase (p’s < 0.05, ηp 2 ≥ 0.11), and improved concomitantly their motor inhibition scores (p = 0.011, ηp 2  = 0.13). No effects were found on perceptual inhibition. The increase in motor inhibition capacities did not however statistically mediate the observed acute effects of MM on bimanual coordination control. Conclusion: We showed that a single MM session may have acute benefits in the motor domain regardless of the familiarity with MM practice. Although these benefits were concomitant to enhanced attentional and motor inhibition abilities, no formal mediation link could be established between the observed motor and cognitive benefits. (1) Background: There appears to be a growing disconnection between humans and their natural environments which has been linked to poor mental health and ecological destruction. Previous research suggests that individual levels of nature relatedness can be increased through the use of classical psychedelic compounds, although a causal link between psychedelic use and nature relatedness has not yet been established. (2) Methods: Using correlations and generalized linear mixed regression modelling, we investigated the association between psychedelic use and nature relatedness in a prospective online study. Individuals planning to use a psychedelic received questionnaires 1 week before (N = 654), plus one day, 2 weeks, 4 weeks, and 2 years after a psychedelic experience. (3) Results: The frequency of lifetime psychedelic use was positively correlated with nature relatedness at baseline. Nature relatedness was significantly increased 2 weeks, 4 weeks and 2 years after the psychedelic experience. This increase was positively correlated with concomitant increases in psychological well-being and was dependent on the extent of ego-dissolution and the perceived influence of natural surroundings during the acute psychedelic state. (4) Conclusions: The here presented evidence for a context- and state-dependent causal effect of psychedelic use on nature relatedness bears relevance for psychedelic treatment models in mental health and, in the face of the current ecological crisis, planetary health.

BACKGROUND:The acute effects of aerobic exercise on improved mood and anxiety reduction have been demonstrated across clinical and nonclinical populations. Limited work has evaluated the acute effects of aerobic exercise on negative affect, obsessions, and compulsions in patients with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). METHOD:Fifty-five patients (64% female) with treatment-resistant OCD were randomized to either 12 weeks of aerobic exercise (AE) or health education contact (HEC) control. Participants rated negative affect (i.e., mood and anxiety), obsessions and compulsions before and after each weekly AE or HEC session. Multilevel models were constructed to evaluate the effect of intervention condition, treatment week (time), and their interaction in terms of acute change in affect, obsession, and compulsions. RESULTS:Results reflected a main effect of condition, such that AE resulted in significantly larger increases in positive mood, and reductions in anxiety and compulsions, as compared to HEC. There was also a main effect of time in predicting acute anxiety reduction, such that linear reductions in anxiety over the course of treatment were observed. No significant effects were observed for acute changes in obsessions. LIMITATIONS:The sample was small and was limited in demographic heterogeneity. Bouts of aerobic exercise were not standardized in terms of duration and mode, which could impact affective response to exercise, and acute affective OCD effects were exclusively self-reported. DISCUSSION:The current findings may help elucidate potential mechanisms of action of exercise on OCD outcomes. In addition, these results point toward the potential of designing exercise interventions that can teach patients to utilize individual bouts of physical activity, "in-the-moment" to improve mood and reduce anxiety and compulsions.

Background: This study compared the acute effects of aerobic (AE) and resistance (RE) exercise on reaction time (RT) and working memory (WM) in individuals with intellectual disability. Methods: RT tests and Corsi test for WM were performed before and after three intervention sessions: AE, RE, or control session consisting on watching video. Results: The RT values decreased significantly (p <.001) after both of AE and RE with higher extend after the RE but did not vary following the control session. Corsi scores increased significantly (p <.001) after AE but not after RE or control session. Conclusions: These findings suggest that the effects of acute exercise on cognitive function in individuals with intellectual disability depend on the exercise mode as well as the nature of the cognitive task. The RE seems to be more recommended for RT enhancement whereas only the aerobic one could improve WM in these individuals. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Responses to psychedelics are notoriously difficult to predict, yet significant work is currently underway to assess their therapeutic potential and the level of interest in psychedelics among the general public appears to be increasing. We aimed to collect prospective data in order to improve our ability to predict acute- and longer-term responses to psychedelics. Individuals who planned to take a psychedelic through their own initiative participated in an online survey (www.psychedelicsurvey.com). Traits and variables relating to set, setting and the acute psychedelic experience were measured at five different time points before and after the experience. Principle component and regression methods were used to analyse the data. Sample sizes for the five time points were N = 654, N = 535, N = 379, N = 315, and N = 212 respectively. Psychological well-being was increased 2 weeks after a psychedelic experience and remained at this level after 4 weeks. Higher ratings of a "mystical-type experience" had a positive effect on the change in well-being after a psychedelic experience, whereas the other acute psychedelic experience measures, i.e., "challenging experience" and "visual effects", did not influence the change in well-being after the psychedelic experience. Having "clear intentions" for the experience was conducive to mystical-type experiences. Having a positive "set" as well as having the experience with intentions related to "recreation" were both found to decrease the likelihood of having a challenging experience. The baseline trait "absorption" and higher drug doses promoted all aspects of the acute experience, i.e., mystical-type and challenging experiences, as well as visual effects. When comparing the relative contribution of different types of variables in explaining the variance in the change in well-being, it seemed that baseline trait variables had the strongest effect on the change in well-being after a psychedelic experience. These results confirm the importance of extra-pharmacological factors in determining responses to a psychedelic. We view this study as an early step towards the development of empirical guidelines that can evolve and improve iteratively with the ultimate purpose of guiding crucial clinical decisions about whether, when, where and how to dose with a psychedelic, thus helping to mitigate risks while maximizing potential benefits in an evidence-based manner.

Abstract Aims This study aimed to explore the rapid effects of dapagliflozin in heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF). Methods and results We studied the functional, echocardiographic, electrophysiological, lung ultrasound, ambulatory blood pressure (BP), microvascular and macrovascular function, and biochemical effects of 2 week treatment with dapagliflozin in 19 type 2 diabetic HFrEF patients in a double‐blind, crossover, placebo‐controlled trial. The surface of a biomedical implant can be a potential endogenous source of release of microparticles (MPs) and nanoparticles (NPs) into the biological environment. In addition, titanium particles from exogenous sources can enter the body through inhalation, ingestion, or dermal contact. The aim of this work was to evaluate the biological response of the lung, liver, and kidneys to acute exposure to titanium dioxide (TiO2). Male Wistar rats were intraperitoneally injected with a suspension of 45 μm or 5 nm TiO2 particles. One month post‐exposure, titanium concentration was determined spectrometrically (ICP‐MS) in plasma and target organs. Blood smears and organ tissue samples were examined histopathologically, and oxidative metabolism was analyzed (superoxide anion by nitro blue tetrazolium (NBT) test; superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT); lipid peroxidation; paraoxonase 1). Liver (aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, and alkaline phosphatase) and kidney (urea, creatinine) function was evaluated using serum biochemical markers. Microchemical and histological analysis revealed the presence of particles, though no structural alterations, in TiO2‐exposed groups. NBT test showed an increase in the percentage of reactive cells and antioxidant enzyme consumption in lung samples in the 45 μm and 5 nm TiO2‐exposed groups. Only the 5 nm particles caused a decrease in SOD and CAT activity in the liver. No changes in renal oxidative metabolism were observed in either of the TiO2‐exposed groups. Background: Water-polo is the water sport with the highest incidence of injuries, with shoulder pain being the most common one. The understanding of risk factors and guidance on preventive measures is essential in this sport discipline. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of a specific 6-week training plan on range of motion (ROM) and joint strength levels in a group of professional water-polo players. Methods: Quasi-experimental study with a sample of 28 participants (age: 20.1 ± 2.5 years; height: 176.9 ± 6.2 cm; body mass: 74.6 ± 8.1 kg). Three study groups, which consisted of one control group and two experimental groups, were established. Two repeated measurements, pre and post intervention, were performed. During these measurements, ROM of the glenohumeral joint was analyzed both in external (ER) and internal (IR) rotation, as well as the maximal isometric strength. Conclusions: The application of a training program improved glenohumeral joint ROM. ER and IR evolve differently in both shoulders. ER improved only in the throwing arm only in the group undergoing intervention but for the non-dominant side, improvements were observed in both ER and IR, regardless of whether or not they had followed the intervention plan. Neotropical fish Cnesterodon decemmaculatus were exposed to different sublethal concentrations (0.5, 1.0 and 5.0 mg As/L) of sodium arsenite (As III) to determine the median lethal concentration (LC50; 96 h) and to evaluate the response of a set of biomarkers (genotoxic, behavioral, biochemical, and metabolic). At the end of the exposure (96 h), fish were video‐recorded for behavior assessment. We used the micronucleus and nuclear abnormality tests and the comet assay in peripheral blood as genotoxicity biomarkers. In regard to biochemical and metabolic biomarkers, we dissected the brain for acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity; the liver for glutathione‐S‐transferase (GST) and catalase (CAT) activity and glutathione content (GSH); the gills for GSH content; and muscle for AChE, energy metabolism of lipids, carbohydrates, and proteins, and the electron transport system activity of the mitochondrial chain. We calculated an index using metabolic biomarkers, to determine the cellular energy allocation. The LC50 value was 7.32 mg As/L. The As affected some swimming parameters in females. No significant differences in micronucleus were found compared with the control, whereas nuclear aberrations increased significantly at 1.0 and 5.0 mg As/L. The genomic damage index and the percentage of cells with DNA damage (measured by the comet assay) showed a significant increase in the As‐treated groups, and this technique was the most sensitive for detecting genotoxic damage. The As affected the antioxidant system (mainly GSH, CAT, and GST) and reduced the lipid content. A preliminary baseline was generated for the response of C. decemmaculatus exposed to sublethal concentrations of As, when it alters swimming behavior and the antioxidant system, has genotoxic effects, and reduces lipid content. Abstract Oil pollution has significantly contributed to coral reef decline in the last five decades and a major oil spill reached Brazilian tropical coast in August 2019. Here, we report the first evidence of direct crude oil contact from that spill on reef coral species, and evaluate the effects of this disaster on coral vitality and benthic assemblage structure on the largest coastal marine protected area (MPA Costa dos Corais) in Brazil. We compared benthic cover in reefs with and without oil and monitored Siderastrea stellata colonies 90 days after oil contact. Oil stains between 0.5 and 150 cm were found in two of the 17 reef sites investigated. Multivariate analyses did not detect significant differences between oiled and non-oiled reefs and there was no evidence of S. stellata health deterioration. These results indicate minimal acute effects on coral vitality and intertidal reef benthic assemblage structure. Future studies should investigate oil effects on specific aspects of coral biology as growth, reproduction, bleaching susceptibility and metagenomics which can deteriorate over longer time frames, and we recommend long-term coral reef monitoring to support a robust assessment and mitigation of chronic oil impacts.

In this study, following a single intratracheal instillation of multiple doses (0, 25, and 150 μg as the control, low, and high dose), non-targeted metabolomics was employed to evaluate the metabolic impact of PM 2.5 across multiple tissues. PM 2.5 induced tissue-specific and dose-dependent disturbances of metabolites and their pathways. The remarkable increase of both intra- and inter-tissue correlations was observed, with emphasis on the metabolism connectivity among lung, spleen, and heart; the tissues' functional specificity has marked their toxic modes. Beyond the inter-status comparison of the metabolite fold-changes, the current correlation network built on intra-status can offer additional insights into how the multiple tissues and their metabolites coordinately change in response to external stimuli such as PM 2.5 exposure. The aim of the present investigation was to compare the acute non-localized post-activation performance enhancement (PAPE) of an exercise protocol involving either the upper or the lower body muscles. Twenty-four resistance trained men participated in the present study and were randomly assigned to an upper body (UB) or to a lower body (LB) group. Both groups tested for upper and lower body power (bench press throw (BPT) and countermovement jump power (CMJP) tests). Participants in the UB group were tested pre and post a high-intensity (HI) and a high-power (POW) bench press protocol while participants in the LB group performed a HI squat and a jump session (POW). A significant group × time interaction was found for CMJP in HI (p = 0.012). Post hoc tests revealed that CMJP was elevated in UB group only (+1.6%; p = 0.025). No other significant interactions were detected. Results of this study indicate that a non-localized PAPE on the lower body may be induced by a HI bench press protocol while a HI squat protocol may not increase upper body power. In particular, the squat protocol performed in the present study (5 sets of 1 rep) may be too demanding to produce a non-localized PAPE. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aims This study aimed to explore the rapid effects of dapagliflozin in heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF). Methods and results We studied the functional, echocardiographic, electrophysiological, lung ultrasound, ambulatory blood pressure (BP), microvascular and macrovascular function, and biochemical effects of 2 week treatment with dapagliflozin in 19 type 2 diabetic HFrEF patients in a double-blind, crossover, placebo-controlled trial. Dapagliflozin had no significant effect on clinical, functional, or quality of life parameters. Dapagliflozin reduced systolic BP [114 (105, 131) vs. 106 (98, 113) mmHg, P < 0.01] and diastolic BP [71 (61, 78) vs. 62 (55, 70) mmHg, P < 0.01]. There was no effect on cardiac chamber size, ventricular systolic function, lung ultrasound, or arterial wave reflection. Dapagliflozin increased creatinine [117 (92, 129) vs. 122 (107, 135) μmol/L, P < 0.05] and haemoglobin [135 (118, 138) vs. 136 (123, 144) g/L, P < 0.05]. There was a reduction in ventricular ectopy [1.4 (0.1, 2.9) vs. 0.2 (0.1, 1.4) %, P < 0.05] and an increase in standard deviation of normal heart beat intervals [70 (58, 90) vs. 74 (62, 103), P < 0.05]. Unexpectedly, dapagliflozin increased high-sensitivity troponin T [25 (19, 37) vs. 28 (20, 42) ng/L, P < 0.01] and reduced reactive hyperaemia index [1.29 (1.21, 1.56) vs. 1.40 (1.23, 1.84), P < 0.05]. Conclusions After 2 weeks, while multiple parameters supported BP reduction and haemoconcentration with dapagliflozin, reduction in cardiac filling pressure, lung water, and functional improvement was not shown. Reduced ventricular ectopic burden suggests an early antiarrhythmic benefit. The small increase in troponin T and the reduction in the reactive hyperaemia index warrant further mechanistic exploration in this treatment of proven mortality benefit in HFrEF. Objective: To examine associations between pre-existing migraines and postconcussion symptoms and cognitive performance acutely (within 72 hours) after a suspected concussion. Design: Nested case-control study. Setting: High schools in Maine, USA. Participants: From a sample of 39161 adolescent athletes who underwent baseline preseason testing, 633 were assessed within 3 days of a suspected concussion. Of these, 59 reported a history of treatment for migraines at baseline (9.3%). These athletes were individually matched to 2 athletes who had a suspected concussion but denied preinjury migraines (total N = 177; age: M = 15.8, SD = 1.3). Assessment of Risk Factors: Self-reported history of treatment for migraines by a physician. Main Outcome Measures: Post-Concussion Symptom Scale total score, ImPACT composite scores, and individual symptom endorsement. Results: Individuals with a pre-existing migraine disorder endorsed greater symptom severity (M = 8.4, SD = 9.9) compared with controls (M = 4.5, SD = 6.5; Cohen's d = 0.47) at preinjury baseline and acutely after suspected injury (migraine: M = 26.0, SD = 25.5; controls: M = 16.7, SD = 15.4; d 5 0.44). Acutely after a suspected concussion, greater proportions of athletes with migraine disorders reported mental fogginess (49.2% vs 33.9%) and memory problems (39.0% vs 24.6%; P < 0.05). Baseline ImPACT composite scores were similar between migraine and control groups (d = 0.04-0.13). Adolescents with pre-existing migraine disorders performed worse after a suspected concussion compared with the control participants on verbal memory (F = 4.32, P = 0.041) and visual memory (F = 3.95, P = 0.049). Conclusions: Individuals with pre-existing migraine disorders may be at higher risk for worse outcomes, including greater overall burden of symptoms and worse cognitive functioning in the memory domain, in the first 72 hours after concussion. Background: Acute cannabis administration can produce transient psychotic-like effects in healthy individuals. However, the mechanisms through which this occurs and which factors predict vulnerability remain unclear. We investigate whether cannabis inhalation leads to psychotic-like symptoms and speech illusion; and whether cannabidiol (CBD) blunts such effects (study 1) and adolescence heightens such effects (study 2). Methods: Two double-blind placebo-controlled studies, assessing speech illusion in a white noise task, and psychotic-like symptoms on the Psychotomimetic States Inventory (PSI). Study 1 compared effects of Cann-CBD (cannabis containing Δ-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and negligible levels of CBD) with Cann+CBD (cannabis containing THC and CBD) in 17 adults. Study 2 compared effects of Cann-CBD in 20 adolescents and 20 adults. All participants were healthy individuals who currently used cannabis. Results: In study 1, relative to placebo, both Cann-CBD and Cann+CBD increased PSI scores but not speech illusion. No differences between Cann-CBD and Cann+CBD emerged. In study 2, relative to placebo, Cann-CBD increased PSI scores and incidence of speech illusion, with the odds of experiencing speech illusion 3.1 (95% CIs 1.3–7.2) times higher after Cann-CBD. No age group differences were found for speech illusion, but adults showed heightened effects on the PSI. Conclusions: Inhalation of cannabis reliably increases psychotic-like symptoms in healthy cannabis users and may increase the incidence of speech illusion. Summary: We performed a time series analysis in Vienna, Austria, investigating the temporal association between daily air pollution (nitrogen dioxide, NO2 and particulate matter smaller than 10 µm, PM10) concentration and risk of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection and death. Data covering about 2 months (March–April 2020) were retrieved from public databases. Infection risk was defined as the ratio between infected and infectious. In a separate sensitivity analysis different models were applied to estimate the number of infectious people per day. The impact of air pollution was assessed through a linear regression on the natural logarithm of infection risk. Risk of COVID-19 mortality was estimated by Poisson regression. Both pollutants were positively correlated with the risk of infection with the coefficient for NO2 being 0.032 and for PM10 0.014. That association was significant for the irritant gas (p = 0.012) but not for particles (p = 0.22). Pollutants did not affect COVID-19-related mortality. We investigated the impact of recent caffeine drinking on glucose and other biomarkers of cardiometabolic function under free-living conditions while also accounting for lifestyle and genetic factors that alter caffeine metabolism and drinking behaviour. Up to 447 794 UK Biobank participants aged 37–73 years in 2006–2010 provided a non-fasting blood sample, for genetic and biomarker measures, and completed questionnaires regarding sociodemographics, medical history and lifestyle. Caffeine drinking (yes/no) about 1 h before blood collection was also recorded. Multivariable regressions were used to examine the association between recent caffeine drinking and serum levels of glycated Hb, glucose, lipids, apo, lipoprotein(a) and C-reactive protein. Men and women reporting recent caffeine drinking had clinically and significantly higher glucose levels than those not recently drinking caffeine (P < 0·0001). Larger effect sizes were observed among those 55+ years of age and with higher adiposity and longer fasting times (P ≤ 0·02 for interactions). Significant CYP1A2 rs2472297×caffeine and MLXIPL rs7800944 × caffeine interactions on glucose levels were observed among women (P = 0·004), with similar but non-significant interactions in men. Larger effect sizes were observed among women with rs2472297 CC or rs7800944 CC genotypes than among rs2472297 T or rs7800944 T carriers, respectively. In summary, men and women drinking caffeine within about 1 h of blood draw had higher glucose levels than those not drinking caffeine. Findings were modified by age, adiposity, fasting time and genetic factors related to caffeine metabolism and drinking behaviour. There are relatively few studies that focus on the health effects of exposure to size-specific particles on respiratory mortality in China. We aimed to examine the association between different particle sizes and mortality from cause-specific respiratory diseases. We used a time series model with a quasi-Poisson link to investigate the relationship between different particle sizes and mortality from respiratory diseases, chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases (COPD), pneumonia, and asthma in Shenzhen during 2014–2017. A total of 3716 mortalities due to respiratory diseases were collected. Both PM1 and PM2.5 were associated with mortality of overall respiratory diseases, COPD, and pneumonia. An interquartile range (IQR) increase in PM1 at lag03 was associated with a 12.21% (95% CI: 2.59%, 22.75%) increase in respiratory mortality, and each IQR increase in PM2.5 at lag03 corresponded to a 12.09% (95% CI: 2.52%, 22.56%) increase in respiratory mortality. PM1-2.5 was not associated with mortality from all-cause or cause-specific respiratory diseases. This study suggests that both PM1 and PM2.5 may increase the risk of mortality due to respiratory diseases in Shenzhen, China. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: An association between ventricular repolarization parameters (VRPs) and ventricular arrhythmias has been demonstrated in previous studies. However, there are limited data related to a relationship between synthetic cannabinoids (SCs) and VRPs. The aim of this study was to analyze the acute effects of SCs on VRPs using electrocardiogram (ECG) measurements of the T-peak to T-end interval (Tp-e), Tp-e/QT ratio, and Tp-e/corrected QT (QTc) ratio. Methods: The present study included 58 patients who were admitted to the emergency department who used SCs (SC +) between 2014 and 2016, and 50 healthy control subjects (SC -). The QT and QTc intervals, Tp-e interval, Tp-e/QT, and Tp-e/QTc ratios were measured from a 12-lead ECG. These parameters were compared between groups and correlation analysis was performed. Abstract Retrospective dietary exposure assessments were conducted for pesticides that have chronic effects on the thyroid and pesticides that have acute effects on the nervous system. Exposure assessments were performed using monitoring data collected by Member States under their official pesticide monitoring programmes in 2016, 2017 and 2018. Exposure estimates were obtained for 10 populations of consumers (i.e. from different countries and from different age groups) by means of a two‐dimensional probabilistic model. Results were compared to those previously obtained for the years 2014, 2015 and 2016, and exposure did not change significantly over time. However, an increase of the sampling uncertainty was identified for one pesticide in a specific food commodity. Strategies are therefore recommended to reduce the sampling uncertainty and to anticipate potential problems before initiating a cumulative risk assessment.

Abstract Aims: This study aimed to verify whether vigorous exercise is capable of generating mental fatigue. Methods: To do so, 16 young adult male (29.4 ± 5.2 years old) cyclists (5.4 ± 4.6 years of training) underwent three visits: 1) control session (rest); 2) session with cognitive demand (20 minutes of AX-CPT); 3) session with vigorous exercise (10km time trial). Mental fatigue was assessed using the visual analog scale of fatigue in the pre-and post-session moments. A two-way ANOVA of repeated measures followed by the Bonferroni posthoc was used to verify the effect of the condition (control, cognitive demand, and exercise) and time (pre and post) interaction. The paired “t” test was used to compare the delta of mental fatigue (post - pre) of the sessions. The partial eta squared was used to determine the effect size of the variance. The significance adopted was p < 0.05. Results: A condition x time interaction was observed (F (2.30) = 5.349, p = 0.010, partial η2 = 0.263). When comparing the deltas, a mean difference was found between the control and vigorous exercise (p = 0.033) conditions and cognitive demand and vigorous exercise (p = 0.017) conditions. Control and cognitive demand sessions showed no difference (p = 0.801). Conclusion: The findings suggest that intense physical exercise seems to cause mental fatigue after practice.

Recently, several countries authorized the use of cannabis flowering tops (dried inflorescences) with a standardized amount of Δ9‐tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), cannabidiol (CBD) and their acidic precursors [Δ‐9‐tetrahydrocannabinolic acid A (THCA‐A) and cannabidiolic acid (CBDA)] to treat neurogenic pain. We studied the acute pharmacological effects and disposition of cannabinoids and their metabolites in serum, oral fluid, sweat patch and urine of 13 healthy individuals treated with medical cannabis decoction and oil. Cannabinoids and their metabolites were quantified by ultrahigh performance tandem mass spectrometry. Even if the oil contained a significantly higher amount of THC, the absorption of THC and its metabolites were similar in both herbal preparations. Conversely, whereas oil contained a significantly higher amount of CBD and a lower amount of CBDA, absorption was significantly higher after decoction intake. Only cannabinoids present in both herbal preparations (THC, CBD, THCA‐A and CBDA) were found in oral fluid, due to the higher acidity compared with that of serum. THC metabolites urinary excretion was always higher after decoction administration. Decoction induced greater feeling of hunger and drowsiness than oil preparation. Pharmacokinetics of cannabinoids, their precursors and their metabolites in biological fluids of individuals treated with cannabis decoction and oil showed a high interindividual variability. Performing repetitions to failure (RF) is a strategy that might acutely reduce neuromuscular performance, as well as increase the rating of perceived exertion (RPE) and the internal training load (ITL) during and after a resistance training (RT) session. Thus, this study aimed to analyze the acute effects of RF or repetitions not to failure (RNF) on countermovement jump (CMJ) performance and the ITL in trained male adults. Eleven men performed two experimental protocols in randomized order (RF vs. RNF). Under the RF condition, participants performed three sets of the leg extension exercise using 100% of the 10RM load and rest intervals of 180-s between sets. Under the RNF condition, participants were submitted to six sets of five repetitions with the same intensity and an 80-s rest interval between sets in the same exercise. The CMJ test was analyzed before and following (15-s and 30-min, respectively) each experimental session. The ITL was evaluated by multiplying the RPE and the total session time, 30-min after the protocol. No main effect or interaction time vs. condition was found for CMJ performance (p > 0.05). In contrast, the ITL showed higher values under the RF condition (p = 0.003). Therefore, even though RF-induced a greater ITL, our results suggest that adopting this strategy in one single-joint exercise for the lower limbs does not seem sufficient to reduce CMJ height. In this study, we investigate the potential acute effects of aircraft noise on mortality and the specific role of different night-time exposure windows by means of a case-crossover study design. Methods and results We selected 24 886 cases of death from cardiovascular disease (CVD) from the Swiss National Cohort around Zürich Airport between 2000 and 2015. For night-time deaths, exposure levels 2 h preceding death were significantly associated with mortality for all causes of CVD [OR = 1.44 (1.03–2.04) for the highest exposure group (LAeq > 50 dB vs. <20 dB)]. Most consistent associations were observed for ischaemic heart diseases, myocardial infarction, heart failure, and arrhythmia. Association were more pronounced for females (P  = 0.02) and for people living in areas with low road and railway background noise (P  = 0.01) and in buildings constructed before 1970 (P  = 0.36). We calculated a population attributable fraction of 3% in our study population. Conclusion Our findings suggest that night-time aircraft noise can trigger acute cardiovascular mortality. Purpose: The acute effects of static stretching have been frequently studied, but the chronic effects have not been studied concurrently. Thus, this study aimed to investigate both the acute and chronic effects of static stretching at different intensities on flexibility.Methods: Twenty-three healthy men were randomly assigned to perform 1 min of static stretching 3 days/week for 4 weeks at 100% intensity (n = 12) or 120% intensity (n = 11). The acute effects of stretching were assessed by measuring the range of motion (ROM), peak passive torque, and passive stiffness before and after every stretching session; the chronic effects of stretching were assessed by measuring these outcomes at baseline and after 2 and 4 weeks of stretching.Results: Compared with the 100% intensity group, the 120% intensity group had significantly greater acute increases in ROM after all 12 sessions, a significantly greater decrease in passive stiffness after 11 of 12 sessions, and a significantly greater increase in peak passive torque after six of 12 sessions. Regarding the chronic effects, ROM was significantly increased in both groups after 2 and 4 weeks of stretching. Peak passive torque significantly increased in the 100% intensity group after 2 and 4 weeks of stretching, and after 4 weeks in the 120% intensity group.Conclusion: Stretching at 120% intensity resulted in significantly greater acute improvements in ROM, peak passive torque, and stiffness than stretching at 100% intensity. Retrospective dietary exposure assessments were conducted for pesticides that have chronic effects on the thyroid and pesticides that have acute effects on the nervous system. Exposure assessments were performed using monitoring data collected by Member States under their official pesticide monitoring programmes in 2016, 2017 and 2018. Exposure estimates were obtained for 10 populations of consumers (i.e. from different countries and from different age groups) by means of a two‐dimensional probabilistic model. Results were compared to those previously obtained for the years 2014, 2015 and 2016, and exposure did not change significantly over time. However, an increase of the sampling uncertainty was identified for one pesticide in a specific food commodity. Strategies are therefore recommended to reduce the sampling uncertainty and to anticipate potential problems before initiating a cumulative risk assessment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Peak exposures are of concern because they can potentially overwhelm normal defense mechanisms and induce adverse health effects. Metrics of peak exposure have been used in epidemiologic and exposure studies, but consensus is lacking on its definition. The relevant characteristics of peak exposure are dependent upon exposure patterns, biokinetics of exposure, and disease mechanisms. The objective of this review was to summarize the use of peak metrics in epidemiologic and exposure studies. A comprehensive search of Medline, Embase, Web of Science, and NIOSHTIC-2 databases was conducted using keywords related to peak exposures. The retrieved references were reviewed and selected for indexing if they included a peak metric and met additional criteria. Information on health outcomes and peak exposure metrics was extracted from each reference. A total of 1,215 epidemiologic or exposure references were identified, of which 182 were indexed and summarized. For the 72 epidemiologic studies, the health outcomes most frequently evaluated were: chronic respiratory effects, cancer and acute respiratory symptoms. Exposures were frequently assessed using task-based and full-shift time-integrated methods, qualitative methods, and real-time instruments. Peak exposure summary metrics included the presence or absence of a peak event, highest exposure intensity and frequency greater than a target. Peak metrics in the 110 exposure studies most frequently included highest exposure intensity, average short-duration intensity, and graphical presentation of the real-time data (plots). This review provides a framework for considering biologically relevant peak exposure metrics for epidemiologic and exposure studies to help inform risk assessment and exposure mitigation.

The aim of the present investigation was to compare the acute non-localized post-activation performance enhancement (PAPE) of an exercise protocol involving either the upper or the lower body muscles. Twenty-four resistance trained men participated in the present study and were randomly assigned to an upper body (UB) or to a lower body (LB) group. Both groups tested for upper and lower body power (bench press throw (BPT) and countermovement jump power (CMJP) tests). Participants in the UB group were tested pre and post a high-intensity (HI) and a high-power (POW) bench press protocol while participants in the LB group performed a HI squat and a jump session (POW). A significant group × time interaction was found for CMJP in HI (p = 0.012). Post hoc tests revealed that CMJP was elevated in UB group only (+1.6%; p = 0.025). No other significant interactions were detected. Results of this study indicate that a non-localized PAPE on the lower body may be induced by a HI bench press protocol while a HI squat protocol may not increase upper body power. In particular, the squat protocol performed in the present study (5 sets of 1 rep) may be too demanding to produce a non-localized PAPE.
