In recent years, aerial infrared thermography (aIRT), as a cost-efficient inspection method, has been demonstrated to be a reliable technique for failure detection in photovoltaic (PV) systems. This method aims to quickly perform a comprehensive monitoring of PV power plants, from the commissioning phase through its entire operational lifetime. This paper provides a review of reported methods in the literature for automating different tasks of the aIRT framework for PV system inspection. The related studies were reviewed for digital image processing (DIP), classification and deep learning techniques. Most of these studies were focused on autonomous fault detection and classification of PV plants using visual, IRT and aIRT images with accuracies up to 90%. On the other hand, only a few studies explored the automation of other parts of the procedure of aIRT, such as the optimal path planning, the orthomosaicking of the acquired images and the detection of soiling over the modules. Algorithms for the detection and segmentation of PV modules achieved a maximum F1 score (harmonic mean of precision and recall) of 98.4%. The accuracy, robustness and generalization of the developed algorithms are still the main issues of these studies, especially when dealing with more classes of faults and the inspection of large-scale PV plants. This study presents an autonomous fault detection method for a wide range of common failures and defects which are visually visible on PV modules. In this paper, we focus especially on detection of bird's drops as a very typical defect on the PV modules. As a crucial prerequisite, a data-set of aerial imageries of the PV strings affected by bird's drops were collected through several experimental flight by multi-copters in order to train an accurate fully convolutional deep network. These images are divided into three groups, namely, training, testing, and validation parts. For the purpose of bird's drops segmentation, an improved encoder-decoder architecture is employed. In this regard, a modified VGG16 model is used as a backbone for the encoder part. The encoder of the network has a very flexible architecture that can be modified and trained for any other visual failure detection. Later on, extracted feature maps of images are imported into a decoder network to map the low resolution features to full resolution ones for pixel-wise segmentation. In addition, an image object positioning algorithm is presented to find the exact position of detected failures in local coordinate system. In a post-processing step, the detected damages are prioritized based on various parameters such as severity of shading and extent of impact on the PV module's output current. For further validation, different affected PV modules were characterized according to the output patterns of the classification step in order to accurately evaluate the effect of birds' drops and consequent shading on the parameters of PV modules based on their severity and location. Finally, the training and testing results demonstrate that the proposed FCN network is able to predict precisely covered pixels by bird's drops on PV modules at pixel level with average accuracies of 98% and 93% for training and testing, respectively. The uptime of utility-scale solar photovoltaic (PV) power plants is of utmost importance for meeting contractual energy yields and expected capacity factors. Aerial Infrared Thermography (aIRT) is a non-destructive, no-downtime, fast and cost-effective method for monitoring large-scale PV power plants and assisting in fault detection. The use of aIRT techniques aims at increasing the quality and service life of PV plants especially in sunny and developing countries such as Brazil, where there is a shortfall of specialised workforce and the costs for a detailed supervisory system of utility-scale PV power plants are high. This paper presents an analysis of an aIRT flight campaign over four utility-scale PV plants in the northeast of Brazil. Two types of measurement equipment have been tested and compared, resulting in more stability and efficiency using a commercially available solution. This solution was also equipped with a RGB camera that accelerated the inspections, since it helped to differentiate defects from hot spots caused by soiling and vegetation over the modules, which were common. Different methods for fault detection were also tested and it was concluded that post-flight image analysis provides faster results. The most common faults that can happen in the early operation of PV power plants and how operators should address and prevent them were also discussed. In this study, we propose an intelligent and automatic fault diagnosis method using less dataset for the training process through feature extraction and selection algorithms, as well as using an ensemble learning algorithm to classify open-circuit (OC) and line-line (LL) faults in PV systems. For this purpose, the proposed model firstly extracts the key features of the operating current and voltage of the PV arrays. Secondly, the Lasso penalty as an embedded feature selection technique is applied to determine the best subset of features. Thirdly, an ensemble learning algorithm consisting of three individual learning algorithms namely Logistic Regression (LR), Support Vector Machine (SVM), and k-Nearest Neighbors (KNN) is used in the classification stage to predict conditions of PV systems based on a weighted voting approach. Moreover, we apply a genetic algorithm to optimize the weights assigned to the algorithms in order to detect electrical faults in PV systems with higher accuracy. The experimental results demonstrate the proposed model is very efficient and reliable to diagnose open-circuit (OC) and line-line (LL) faults in PV arrays under any challenging conditions with an accuracy of 99%. Supporting multiple paths for concurrent data transmission is one of the most important features of the SCTP_CMT protocol. Generally, the priority of paths or best main path are not considered in this protocol; only the priority of data and communication currents are taken into account. Thus, choosing the best main path is very important. In this study, a method is introduced for the selection of path with the highest quality of service based on the features of all the lines. Prolonged data transmission time caused by failure to select optimal main path of the SCTP_CMT in dissimilar lines was reduced through the particle swarm optimization algorithm. Unmanned aerial vehicles are becoming a reliable and useful instrument in monitoring and diagnostic services in the energy field. Operation and maintenance is a crucial factor for photovoltaic (PV) plant inspection and control activities, which currently are quite hard to be performed due to manual and dispersive procedures. The automation of the monitoring techniques will become, in future, an essential task in this market, and unmanned aerial system technology can play a role in it. This paper proposes a novel, comprehensive, and innovative approach in order to automate the inspection and prognostic procedure by means of designing a control system in order to provide accurate information on operating conditions of PV plants. The system is able to perform PV systems' monitoring, diagnosis, defects and failures reconnaissance, and data processing and to propose remedial actions. In the current experimental research, only infrared radiation sensor imaging was examined to evaluate thermographic behavior of the PV modules and to build the related image processing algorithm. However, it is possible to easily extend such a procedure in order to manage a larger amount of data. First results of this work have proven that the proposed procedure is very promising being fast, cost effective, and adaptable to large PV plants, which can be controlled during their entire lifetime. As large-scale Photovoltaic (PV) power plants are being expanded in installation number and capacity, aerial infrared thermography (aIRT) has proven to be effective in detecting at different phases of their development, construction and commissioning to operation and maintenance. However, evaluating the aerial imagery over hundreds of hectares fields of PV arrays is very time-consuming and subject to human error. This paper proposes a complete framework for automatically detecting faults in large-scale PV power plants and their physical location inside the plant site. To this end, a Mask-RCNN algorithm is developed and fine-tuned for instance segmentation using a dataset of 93 samples collected in an aIRT flight campaign in Brazil. The results are combined with orthomosaic techniques to create an orthomap of the PV system with the highlighted faults. The proposed method has been tested to automatically detect the faults in two power plants. Several tests were performed to improve the algorithm's accuracy, resulting in high-accuracy results for detecting and localizing hot spots in PV plants and disconnected substrings. This paper proposes an Intelligent Monitoring System (IMS) for Photovoltaic (PV) systems using affordable and cost-efficient hardware and also lightweight software that is capable of being easily implemented in different locations and having the capability to be installed in different types of PV power plants. IMS uses the Internet of Things (IoT) platform for handling data as well as Interoperability and Communication among the devices and components in the IMS. Moreover, IMS includes a personal cloud server for computing and storing the acquired data of PV systems. The IMS also consists of a web monitor system via some open-source and lightweight software that displays the information to multiple users. The IMS uses deep ensemble models for fault detection and power prediction in PV systems. A remarkable ability of the IMS is the prediction of the output power of the PV system to increase energy yield and identify malfunctions in PV plants. To this end, a long short-term memory (LSTM) ensemble neural network is developed to predict the output power of PV systems under different environmental conditions. On the other hand, the IMS uses machine learning-based models to detect numerous faults in PV systems. The fault diagnostic of IMS is based on the following stages. Firstly, major features are elicited through an analysis of Current–Voltage (I–V) characteristic curve under different faulty and normal events. Second, an ensemble learning model including Naive Bayes (NB), K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN), and Support Vector Machine (SVM) is used for detecting and classifying fault events. To enhance the performance in the process of fault detection, a feature selection algorithm is also applied. Line–line (LL) and line-ground (LG) faults may not be detected by common protection devices in Photovoltaic (PV) arrays as these faults are not detectable under high fault impedance and low mismatch level. In recent years, many efforts have been devoted to overcome these challenges using intelligent methods. However, these methods could not classify the type of faults and diagnose their severity. In this article, we propose a novel and intelligent fault monitoring method to detect and classify LL and LG faults at the dc side of PV systems. For this purpose, the main features of current–voltage curves under different fault events and normal conditions are extracted. The faults are categorized using the hierarchical classification platform. Later, the LL and LG faults are detected and classified by machine learning methods. The proposed method aims to reduce the amount of dataset, which is required for the learning process, and also obtains a higher accuracy in detecting and classifying the fault events at low mismatch levels and high fault impedance compared with other fault diagnostic methods. The experimental results verify that the proposed method precisely detects and classifies LL and LG faults on PV systems under different conditions and severity with the accuracy of 96.66% and 91.66%, respectively. Reliability assessment of Photovoltaic (PV) modules is very crucial to increase the service lifetime of PV systems. This study assesses the degradation rate and reliability of PV modules operated for twelve years under the tropical climatic condition in sub-Saharan. For this purpose, various characterization techniques, namely visual inspection, infrared (IR) thermography assessment, and current-voltage (I-V) characterization, have been employed to evaluate the performance of PV modules. Moreover, the functioning of bypass diodes has been tested under partial shading situations. The results demonstrate that after twelve years of outdoor operation, the short-circuit current (I sc) of modules have been degraded up to 16.4% with an average decrease of 11.7% compared to the nameplate values. The open-circuit voltages (V oc) were reduced from 11.4% to 17.1% with a mean of 14.8%. The decline in Fill Factor (FF) of the modules ranges from 11.3% to 24.2%, and the losses of power output were between 34.5% and 41.4%. Moreover, the visual and thermography assessment reveals that the PV modules are severely affected by various failures such as EVA browning, cell interconnects ribbons browning and the corrosion of solder bonds. For this purpose, first, the key features are extracted via analyzing I-V characteristics under various LL fault events and normal operation. Second, a feature selection algorithm has been applied to select the best features for each learning algorithm in order to reduce the amount of data required for the learning process. Third, an ensemble learning model is developed that combines several learning algorithms based on the probabilistic strategy to achieve superior diagnostic performance. Here, we find an excellent agreement between simulation and experimental results that the proposed method can obtain higher accuracy in detecting and classifying the LL faults, even under low mismatch levels and high fault impedances. In addition, the comparison results demonstrate that the performance of the proposed method is better than individual machine learning algorithms, so that the proposed method precisely detects and classifies LL faults on PV systems under the different conditions with an average accuracy of 99% and 99.5%, respectively. The present study introduces a novel approach employing weightless neural networks (WNN) for the detection and diagnosis of visual faults in photovoltaic (PV) modules. WNN leverages random access memory (RAM) devices to simulate the functionality of neurons. The network is trained using a flexible and efficient algorithm designed to produce consistent and precise outputs. The primary advantage of adopting WNN lies in its capacity to obviate the need for network retraining and residual generation, making it highly promising in classification and pattern recognition domains. In this study, visible faults in PV modules were captured using an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) equipped with a digital camera capable of capturing RGB images. The collected images underwent preprocessing and resizing before being fed as input into a pre-trained deep learning network, specifically, DenseNet-201, which performed feature extraction. Subsequently, a decision tree algorithm (J48) was employed to select the most significant features for classification. The selected features were divided into training and testing datasets that were further utilized to determine the training, test and validation accuracies of the WNN (WiSARD classifier). Hyperparameter tuning enhances WNN's performance by achieving optimal values, maximizing classification accuracy while minimizing computational time. The obtained results indicate that the WiSARD classifier achieved a classification accuracy of 100.00% within a testing time of 1.44 s, utilizing the optimal hyperparameter settings. This study underscores the potential of WNN in efficiently and accurately diagnosing visual faults in PV modules, with implications for enhancing the reliability and performance of photovoltaic systems. In the thermal industry, one common way to transfer heat between hot tubes and cooling fluid is using cross-flow heat exchangers. For heat exchangers, microscale coatings are conventional safeguards for tubes from corrosion and dust accumulation. This study presents the hypothesis that incorporating domain knowledge based on governing equations can be beneficial for developing machine learning models for CFD results, given the available data. Additionally, this work proposes a novel approach for combining variables in heat exchangers and building machine learning models to forecast heat transfer in heat exchangers for turbulent flow. To develop these models, a dataset consisting of nearly 1000 cases was generated by varying different variables. The simulation results obtained from our study confirm that the proposed method would improve the coefficient of determination (R-squared) for trained models in unseen datasets. For the unseen data, the R-squared values for random forest, K-Nearest Neighbors, and support vector regression were determined to be 0.9810, 0.9037, and 0.9754, respectively. Here, nitrogen doped molybdenum disulfide quantum dots (N-MoS2 QDs) are fabricated by making use of the pulsed laser ablation (PLA) process in liquid nitrogen (LN2) as a dopant agent. In fact, LN2 contributes the rapid condensation of the plasma plume to form MoS2 QDs, optimizing the conditions for the synthesis of N-doped MoS2 with p-type property. The structural/optical features of the synthesized products are studied using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), absorption spectroscopy, photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy techniques, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The TEM image shows the creation of MoS2 QDs with 5.5 nm average size. UV-vis and PL spectroscopy confirm the formation of N-MoS2 QDs according to the dominant peaks. The Tuck plot gives a direct band-gap of 4.34 eV for MoS2 QDs. Furthermore, XPS spectroscopy reveals Mo-N bonding, indicating nitrogen doping as evidence of p-type MoS2 QDs. Thus, PLA provides a single-stage way to the clean and green synthesis of the MoS2 QDs suspension without a need for high vacuum devices and additional chemical components. Regarding the pristine MoS2, the N-MoS2 QDs benefit from a low overpotential of −0.35 V at −10 mA/cm2 per µg alongside a low Tafel slope of 300 mV/dec. Subsequently, the lower Rct value of N-MoS2 QDs verifies the enhancement of the charge transfer kinetics mainly due to the elevated electronic conductivity. Furthermore, the quasi-rectangular cyclic voltammetry (CV) as well as the larger current window demonstrate a notable electrocatalytic activity. The former is based on the enhanced active sites in favor of N-MoS2 QDs against other samples of interest. Thereby, it is discovered that the N-doped MoS2 QD acts as an effective catalyst to notably improve the performance of the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Silicon, as the most abundant element in the earth's crust and the most common material used in electronic and optical equipment, has attracted the attention of many individuals to change the properties of this material, improving its electronic and optical properties. One of these efforts relies on the reduction of surface reflection by making use of different methods. However, among them, the use of lasers in creating surface microstructures has been of special importance because there is no need for masks and other additional materials. In this work, a theoretical method is utilized to analyze these textures with the theorem of diffraction grating on a micrometer scale. The surface reflection of the microstructure created by excimer laser exposure on a silicon surface is simulated. The theoretical Coordinate transformation method (C method) gives out notable results against the experimental records by approximating triangular and trapezoidal microstructures. The model is useful for predicting the reflective response of the modified microstructural morphology. Line-line (LL) faults in photovoltaic (PV) arrays lead to a reduction in the output power and service life of PV systems, and if not detected and eliminated in time, may cause catastrophic fire hazards. The severity of LL faults could have an adverse effect on the performance of protection devices and depends on two main factors: 1) the number of modules involved in the fault, and 2) the resistivity of the fault path. In this study, first, LL faults are classified using a support vector machine (SVM) and then the main process of LL faults resistance (R f) estimation is carried out to determine the accurate severity of the fault. Conventionally, to measure the resistivity of the fault path, it is inevitable to employ multiple additional current and voltage sensors, which does not seem economically convenient and practical. Therefore, in this study, artificial intelligence (AI) has been utilized to estimate the fault resistance thus eliminating all the additional sensors. To this end, a regression-based dense neural network (R-DNN) is proposed and fine-tuned to predict the R f in a continuous interval of 0–24 Ω. Also, to provide the proposed model with a more organized thus simpler interpretation of the initial dataset, novel tangential features are constructed using five predefined points on the PV array current-voltage (I–V) characteristic curve. The experimental results show that the model is perfectly capable of diagnosing the LL faults and estimating the fault resistance values under various conditions. Finally, a comparison is carried out between the final R-DNN model and several regression-based machine learning algorithms which shows that the proposed R-DNN outperforms the other algorithms in terms of accuracy and execution time. This work presents a new operational framework to measure the smartness and smart readiness of highly electrified buildings. The framework seeks to enhance legacy systems and controls of existing buildings and establish minimum criteria for future constructions to ensure they interact effectively with users and the grid, aiming for a clean energy transition. To this end, we develop two modified complementary assessments, one based on the method indicated by the Smart Readiness Indicator (SRI), proposed by the European Union (EU), and the other following the Smart by Powerhouse scheme, introduced by a Norwegian consortium of stakeholders focused on developing future proof climate buildings. The proposed structure is implemented in ten non-residential buildings in Norway with different energy systems, typologies, and construction dates. The results of this study demonstrate that energy flexibility quantification plays a crucial role in correctly implementing the framework in highly electrified buildings. Therefore, the dynamic impact of having Electric Vehicle Charging (EVC) and other electrical-dependent loads must be considered in the assessment. With the proposed modifications, the EVC weight in the flexibility score now varies from 24.0 to 43.6%, up from the original 5%. Overall, the pilot buildings have a smart readiness level between 21.6% and 31.7%, with mostly automated smartness levels. Early detection of faults in photovoltaic (PV) systems is crucial for improving their lifespan and reliability. Conventional protection devices may not be able to detect electrical faults under critical conditions. This usually occurs due to (i) the current-limiting nature and non-linear output characteristics of PV arrays, (ii) the changing environmental conditions (such as irradiance and temperature variations), and (iii) the influence of the maximum power point tracker (MPPT), particularly in the presence of critical fault impedance values or mismatch levels. Therefore, modern data-driven methods are required for fault detection and classification in PV arrays. However, careful investigation in previous studies reveals the existing gaps and limitations, such as poor accuracy, and incomprehensive models which have not considered various electrical faults, low mismatch levels, and critical fault impedance values. To this end, in this study, a comprehensive multilayer model is proposed which consists of six layers for diagnosis, classification and severity identification of electrical faults in PV arrays. Each layer adopts a weighted ensemble learning (WEL) algorithm consisting of three classifiers namely Support Vector Machine (SVM), Naïve Bayes (NB) and Logistic Regression (LR). Besides, a genetic algorithm (GA) is employed in each layer to find the optimal weights for each classifier (i.e., SVM, NB and LR). The initial dataset is acquired through an investigation into the PV array current–voltage (I-V) characteristic curve and extraction of several features under various faulty and normal conditions. To reduce the dataset dimensionality thus computationally simplifying the training process, the sequential floating forward selection (SFFS) algorithm is utilized in each layer as a powerful feature selection technique. The results show a highly accurate performance in fault diagnosis, classification, and severity assessment, with an average simulation and experimental accuracies of 98.9% and 98.37%, respectively. A novel structure is proposed for single heterojunction solar cells based on n-type molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2) and tungsten disulfide (WS 2) deposited on p-type silicon substrate using thermal chemical vapor deposition. Moreover, the coupled heterostructures namely MoS 2 /WS 2 and WS 2 /MoS 2 are prepared by the same method. The main aim of this study is to evaluate the photovoltaic characteristics of the proposed heterojunction solar cells. For this purpose, various characterization techniques namely X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy, diffuse reflectance and Raman spectroscopies are employed. XRD patterns confirm MoS 2 and WS 2 layers form in hexagonal structures. Furthermore, DRS and Raman spectroscopy confirm the formation of few layers of MoS 2 , WS 2 , MoS 2 /WS 2 and WS 2 /MoS 2 heterostructures. The greatest power conversion efficiency (PCE) is obtained for the proposed solar cell fabricated based on MoS 2 on p-type Si as single junction. The combined challenge of climate change and population aging requires novel solutions that enhance the resilience of building energy systems and secure indoor comfort for vulnerable occupants in extreme weather conditions. This research investigates the performance of a newly developed Energy Management (EM) system based on Collective Intelligence (CI) and Reinforcement Learning (RL), called CIRLEM, managing the energy performance of an urban complex in Ålesund, Norway, including an elderly care center with decentralized PV generation, EV charging and storage, while connected to a main electricity grid. CIRLEM controls multiple flexibility assets including independent thermal zones (the demand-side agents) and Electric Vehicle (EV) charging stations (the local storage). In a novel approach, CIRLEM coordinates the distributed storage and generation together with the demand side to control energy systems and react collaboratively to environmental variations. Under extreme weather conditions, without applying CIRLEM, the demand can be more than double that of typical weather conditions. The implementation of the double-layer CIRLEM can reduce the total demand by 35 % over a month. Furthermore, the inclusion of photovoltaic (PV) systems allows the system to be independent from the grid for almost 40 % of its operational hours, while adding EV storage can increase it to around 70 %. Finally, the application of CIRLEM reduced overheating hours from 17 h ∙ °C to 2 h ∙ °C under extreme conditions, while maintaining comfortable conditions even during temperature ramps. This work proposes an automated reconfiguration system to manage two types of faults in any position inside the solar arrays. The faults studied are the short-circuit to ground and the open wires in the string. These faults were selected because they severely affect power production. By identifying the affected panels and isolating the faulty one, it is possible to recover part of the power loss. Among other types of faults that the system can detect and locate are: diode short-circuit, internal open-circuit, and the degradation of the internal parasitic serial resistance. The reconfiguration system can detect, locate the above faults, and switch the distributed commutators to recover most of the power loss. Moreover, the system can return automatically to the previous state when the fault has been repaired. A SIMULINK model has been built to prove this automatic system, and a simulated numerical experiment has been executed to test the system response to the faults mentioned. The results show that the recovery of power is more than 90%, and the diagnosis accuracy and sensitivity are both 100% for this numerical experiment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Defective components within solar photovoltaic (PV) arrays overheat, resulting in particular temperature patterns under the long-wave thermal infrared (LWIR) spectrum. The detection and on-field localization of these patterns is of paramount aid to the operations and maintenance of PV installations. In this context, we develop a two-layer end-to-end inspection solution for the detection, quantification and on-field localization of overheated regions on PV arrays from LWIR UAV imagery. Layer 1 generates a georeferenced orthomosaic of the inspected site via a Structure from Motion-MultiView Stereo (SfM-MVS) photogrammetric acquisition/post-processing workflow. Layer 2 is a tile-based deep semantic segmentation stage that extracts and quantifies the affected regions from the generated orthomosaic. We collect aerial images from 103 PV sites, comprising approximately 342 000 modules. After a SfM-MVS workflow, we produce and annotate 7910 orthorectified unique affected tiles, posteriorly augmented to prepare the state-of-the-art dataset in terms of size and representativeness. Through a training/cross-validation and test process, we investigate the implementation of 9 models in the segmentation process: FCN, U-Net, FPN, DeepLab, LinkNet, DANet, CFNet, ACFNet and TransU-Net, each of which experimented with 2 backbones: ResNet50 and DenseNet121. The models feature efficient encoder-to-decoder feature map transfers, pyramidal feature recognition, spatial and channel attention, feature co-occurrence, class center as well as vision transformers. The best performance is achieved by FPN-DenseNet121, with a mean mIoU of 93.44% and an F1-score of 96.39% on our test set. The two-layer solution takes the best of the data-centric and model-centric paradigms, alongside addressing the limitations of conventional inspection procedures. It is put into a concrete application framework, where it provides a pixel-based and a tile-based quantification of the affected regions within a PV plant. The greenhouse industry is an energy-intensive sector with a heavy reliance on fossil fuels, contributing to substantial greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Addressing this issue, the employment of energy-saving strategies along with the replacement of conventional energy sources with renewable energies are among the most feasible solutions. Over the last few years, solar energy has demonstrated great potential for integration with agricultural greenhouses. The present study reviews the progress of solar greenhouses by investigating their integration with solar energy technologies including photovoltaic (PV), photovoltaic-thermal (PVT), and solar thermal collectors. From the literature, PV modules mounted on roofs or walls of greenhouses cause shading which can adversely affect the growing trend of cultivated crops inside. This issue can be addressed by using bifacial PV modules or employing sun trackers to create dynamic shades. PVT modules are more efficient in producing both heat and electricity, and less shading occurs when concentrating modules are employed. In terms of using solar thermal collectors, higher performance values have been reported for greenhouses installed in moderate climate conditions. Further, in this review, the employment of thermal energy storage (TES) units as crucial components for secure energy supply in solar greenhouses is studied. The usage of TES systems can increase the thermal performance of solar greenhouses by 29%. Additionally, the most common mathematical models utilized to describe the thermal behavior of solar greenhouses are presented and discussed. From the literature, machine learning algorithms have shown a better capability to describe the complex environment of greenhouses, but their main drawback is less reliability. Notwithstanding the progress which has been made, further improvements in technology and more reductions in costs are required to make the solar greenhouse technology a solution to achieve sustainable development.
